I know how much the kindness of friends and strangers can lift both the giver and recipient going through grief or during these scary heart wrenching times so please consider participating if you have the time! The emotional rollercoaster that is my illness...ahhh...pure chaos. The Ups: Last week while feeling rotten from a new Rx, I had a most wonderful experience. A woman approached me and exclaimed,”Oh my, look-at-you! You look so youthful & artistic! I love it! You're so courageous! I wish I had that kind self confidence! You're amazing!” At which point she walked away. She left me stunned & SO STOKED to be me! Even if only until the next wave of barfiness struck. The Downs: Dr. appts where it became clear my chronic daily headaches may not have a resolution. Unless... we take steps that will increase the pain levels elsewhere. Intractable indeed. Also, Myasthenia Gravis may be the culprit causing the facial drooping. Yippee! Another Dx to top off my rising mountain’o’shit. They say if you're system is prone to one autoimmune disease, you're open to all. I wonder just how many I'll end up with?!

The Kindness Of Strangers:
Part 16
Time: 1423
Location: near Paris
Elijah is sitting in his study at peace and all right in his world. But a nagging feeling in his gut tells him something is not right. He steps out onto the front porch to listen to the night. As he steps down off the porch to look around he feels that someone is nearby. And he knows nothing more.

Elijah wakes up laying in front of the house. He looks around and is devastated. There are bodies everywhere. Vampire and human alike. The vampires have been staked and the humans have mostly been shot but not all. Some are inexplicably absent of blood.
The village has largely been burned. The church and its connected orphanage and school are untouched. Otherwise only a few homes, including Elijah’s remain. The few people who were not killed all seem as lost as Elijah feels.
He looks around at the carnage and knows vampires were in the group who did this. There are only a handful of vampires who could have gotten so close to Elijah without him being aware of it. Most of them share his family name. As that thought tears through his brain another follows on its heels. He did sense a presence just before his neck was snapped.
Through the devastation of the scene a horrible thought occurs to Elijah.
“Paul! Paul!”
He feels panic overtaking him as he looks for the young man. As he nears the church Paul runs out. Elijah runs to him and embraces him thankful that he seems to be ok.
“They tried to get in the church, daddy-lijah. The Father and I tried to fight them off but he’s been shot. He asked me to come get you.”
Elijah followed Paul back inside to the Father.
“Elijah,” his voice is very week and Elijah hears his heartbeat slowing. “Elijah, please. Turn me.”
“Father, I have not turned anyone in over a century. Please do not ask me to do this.”
“Elijah, think of the children. Think of the school and all the good work we’ve begun.”
As he hears the man’s pulse grow weaker he realizes a choice has to be made now. The pleading look in his eye is more than Elijah can take. He turns his friend the priest.

Epilogue:
Time: 1921
Location: Paris
Elijah and Father O’Brien look at each other after relaying the details of his turning to Charlotte.
“Did you ever find out who was behind the attack,” she asks.
Elijah clears his throat and looks at the ground as he replys, “Nicklaus and Kol.”
“Your brothers,” she exclaims!
“Yes. Now you see why I say you must be wary of him if you ever meet and why I hope you never do meet my siblings. Also why the Father here was so surprised I let you in Charlotte. Since that happened I have tended to keep people at arms length. Some may get a little close but only you have made it to my heart since Klaus destroyed what I held so dear. “
“But why would they do that?”
“Jealousy. Plain and simple.”
“Please tell me that Martha survived.”
“She did,” Elijah says with a smile. They were gone long before the attack and so were spared. They ended up with a family of their own. Her first born son she named after me.”
“Not only did she name him after you Elijah, but for several generations at least the first born son is named Elijah or some variation. Paul went with James, the name you gave as your middle name at the time. Each one in the honor of ‘Daddy-lijah’ the man that changed the lives of Martha and Paul so long ago. Eventually, their descendants moved from Paris and I lost track of them.”
