We like the free camps that surprise us. CSR North Pool near Wiluna did exactly that. Peace. Wild life. Water. With an outback, country feel. Fresh air. And the whole camp site to ourselves. We didn't get service. It doesn't really bother us to go off grid for a bit. With school and work, we set our own hours, so off grid is within our own timetable. However, the drive in, is further from the Wiluna township then I thought. Not as far as some places we've been, but far enough. Still, this is a free camp to enjoy for at least a couple of nights. The horses, the atmosphere... Just somewhere to camp up before heading to the next destination... Free. 16 months on the road! I never imagined when we started this journey, where it would take us, but to be in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, is amazing! Some people go into full-time travel with the expectation of adventure and entertainment all the time. To truly understand such a lifestyle change, you have to understand the reality is rarely what you see on social media. It isn't adventure all the time. There are boring weeks. Boring towns. Break downs. In the last two weeks, we've had to fix our hot water system and completely replace water hoses under our caravan. And for the last month, we've had to wait around for a medical referral to Perth. We were on our way to a ghost town called Gwalia and then onto Karijini. But, that's what happens. Work gets in the way. Teens can be snottier about school work than Miss eight! Arguments, tantrums, six people in a caravan! But, we made it 16 months because we have never had any rose coloured glasses about life on the road. It can be hard but strip away the expectations. It can get hot. It can get cold. Giant flies are your new best friend. Red dirt stains everything including the kid's skin. Mozzies are like bite-size assassins. Some coastal places smell like off tuna cans despite the view. And some shops you come across sell you milk for so much you feel like jumping a farmers fence and milking a cow yourself! This life isn't going to be for everyone who does it, some of you will get six months in and decide, "We're done." And that's okay. But I think, a lot of you will do just fine if you go into it understanding the reality. We've travelled this country for a long time now and know the realities and still, I have zero regrets. We were going to leave Monday, but I just don't think I can pull myself away from this beautiful place. We've always had exceptional generator etiquette. But, have nothing to worry about here. We used the genny most of the day, conserving a lot of our battery and our gas. Sadie is in her element, exploring the dunes with little to no supervision always coming back on a whistle and we're finding how good a dog she is when she isn't restricted to that chain. And, this afternoon, we discovered crabs! Big ones. But, that's a job for tomorrow. Low tide and rock climbing. The kids are going to love it... Come to think of it, so am I. Especially if we're putting crabs on the fire tomorrow night... My Parrot traveller 🥰... he's like my fifth child... And, yes, I realize his name is after the Greek Goddess of the hunt, but I still don't know if he is actually a she. As a Literature major, and writing my career, Greek mythology and Egyptian mythology (another reason why my daughters name is Octavia) are both favourites of mine. Anyway, we are on our way to the West Coast of the Yorke Peninsula. Artemis just chills out on my shoulder, he'll watch the scenery out of the window, he'll try to chew my ears, he'll get tangled in my hair, and then, when he gets really bored, he'll wander to the back seat to annoy the shit out of Sadie, the husky X. Octavia is our youngest wild child and because we are always calling out for her, it's the word he has learned the most... I'm not going to tell you the other words he has learned 🤣 We stayed the night at Foul Bay Boat Ramp, can't fault it really. Lovely views. Again, low cost camp. I'm hanging out to see some dolphins... sadly none this time around. We've paid the $50 week permit at - https://www.visityorkepeninsula.com.au/camping If you're cruising around checking out all the camping spots, then Foul Bay Boat Ramp is pretty nice considering, however, there is nothing there, you HAVE to be self-sufficient and there's nothing around for a good 20-30 minute drive either - food, water fill-up, dump point etc As camps go, they're level, spacious, great views, and the fire bans were lifted April 15th. $10 per night! Pretty great if you ask me. No facilities except a long drop toilet, so make sure you're self-sufficient to do the Yorke unless of course you plan to go to the caravan parks or stop in at the more expensive bush camps that have showers. This, however, is perfect for us, especially since there are 19 bush camps all the same price located all over the Yorke Peninsula. Or $50 for the week which is how we are paying.
