Michaela Coel and Michael Socha interview
Huge congratulations to Michaela Coel for winning two RTS Programme Awards at the 2016 ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel. Michaela won in the Comedy Performance and Breakthrough categories, and was nominated in the Comedy Writing category. Breakthrough is a new category at the awards this year.
The juries described her as a “talent that breaks through in every direction”, giving a performance that is “fresh, totally unique, edgy and brave…utterly original”. On stage, Coel thanked the girls at her secondary school for helping her create her characters, and the RTS for including more people from minority backgrounds and women at the awards.
On the very same day, Coel was nominated for her first BAFTA Craft Award for Breakthrough Talent for her writing in Chewing Gum. The ceremony takes place on Sunday 24 April.
And finally, on Saturday 19th March, Chewing Gum won a Screen Nation Film & Television Award in the public-voted category of Favourite Comedy Production. Kadiff Kirwan, who plays Aaron in Chewing Gum, accepted the award on behalf of the production.
The second series of Chewing Gum will shoot later this year for E4. (x)
