âI told you - I have the worst sense of direction!â Y/N groaned as herself and Beatrice managed to take another wrong turn on their way to the Great Hall for breakfast.
âI thought you were exaggerating or - or being modest!â Beatrice laughed, nudging into her gently with her elbow. Y/N pulled a face at her.
âThat would be rather Hufflepuff of me, wouldnât it?âÂ
âHey - this looks familiar!â Beatrice exclaimed as they turned another corner and Y/N wrinkled her nose, taking in the painting of a fruit bowl that they had stumbled across.
âB?â
âYeah?â
âWeâre back by the kitchens - weâre back where we started.â
âWhatâre you two doing here?â They turned to face back down the hallway where the Hufflepuff common room was located hidden behind a pile of barrels. Liane, Jessica and Eric were approaching them, grinning at their obviously lost friends.
âWaiting for you?â Y/N suggested.
âForget the way to the Great Hall?â Eric teased.
âMaybe a little,â Y/N agreed. The group continued on, led by Jessica who regularly looked over her shoulder as though to check that her newfound friends were still following her, worried that they may disappear.
âItâs a good thing we left so early this morning,â Beatrice commented to Y/N. âOtherwise we might not have made it to breakfast in time.â
âWhy did you leave so early?â Liane asked as they entered into the Great Hall, which was already at least half full with students eating their breakfast.
âI was aware Iâd get lost - B just came along for the ride.â Beatrice nodded solemnly at those words as they found themselves seats at the Hufflepuff table.
âI was under the impression that she knew what she was doing,â she admitted. âAnd Iâm ashamed to admit that.â
âYouâve known me less than twenty four hours!â Y/N protested. âFor all you know, I could have planned all of that.â
âWhy would you have planned getting lost on the way to breakfast?â Beatrice asked in bewilderment.
âOh, yeah, Iâve known you for less than twenty four hours and you expect me to spill my master plan to you,â Y/N scoffed.
Eric was watching the two girls interact, his brow scrunched together in confusion but a twinkle in his eyes that showed he was more amused than anything else.
âYouâre both rather strange.âÂ
âWell thatâs just rude,â Beatrice huffed, pouring herself some juice as Y/N picked up the water pitcher.Â
âDo you think the professors will be nice?â Jessica blurted out the words, cutting off their conversation. Two spots of pink appeared on her cheeks when all four of them turned to face her. âSorry,â she muttered, looking down at her plate.Â
âYou remember what Mum said, Jess,â Eric said calmly. âWhen she was here she loved all the teachers - she was even taught by McGonagall and Flitwick.â
âWho are they?â Beatrice frowned and quickly added: âmy parents didnât much like talking about Hogwarts,â Y/N thought she saw a hint of embarrassment in her expression and she noted how Beatrice refused to meet any of their eyes.
âMcGonagall teaches transfiguration and Flitwick teaches charms,â Liane explained, buttering a piece of toast. âMy parents told me that McGonagallâs a complete hard-ass though,â she added and Y/N saw Jessicaâs eyes widen.
âReally?â Beatrice asked, staring at Liane.
âYeah - really strict, apparently,â she confirmed. âEspecially if youâre not in her house.â
âThatâs not true,â Eric sighed, shaking his head. âThe teachers arenât allowed to favour those in their house,â he insisted but Liane shook her head defiantly.
âNone of the teachers stick to that! All the heads of house are lenient towards their own students!â
âSo dâya think Sproutâll give us a load of house points for like⌠breathing?â Beatrice asked and she shared an amused look with Y/N.
âAlright - laugh all you want now, weâll see whoâs right,â Liane scoffed, but there was traces of laughter in her voice.
âWhat do you think weâll have today?â Jessica asked in her quiet, soft voice, her nerves about their first day seeming to override the shyness that she had shown the previous evening.
âI hope we have Potions,â Liane said eagerly, her voice completely changing from her previous tone of disbelief.
âDo you think youâll be good at it?â Beatrice asked interestedly.
âMy Dadâs fantastic at brewing potions - Mum says that heâs been waiting for me to go to Hogwarts so that he can help me learn how to properly do them myself,â Liane explained through a bite of toast.
âI heard that it was a really hard subject,â Jessica worried.
âIâm sure youâll be fine,â Y/N mustered up as much of a reassuring smile as she could manage. âWhatâre you looking forward to?â Jessica didnât reply immediately, clearly thinking carefully about the question.
âI think Iâll enjoy herbology,â she decided, nodding her head to confirm her thought. Beside Y/N, Beatrice completely lit up in delight.
âReally? I think I will too - I used to love gardening when I was at home!â She enthused. Jessica brightened at that and it wasnât long before the two of them were talking excitedly about what they were most looking forward to studying - both of them, apparently, having already read through the text book that had been assigned for their year.
âWhat about you, then?â
âCare of Magical Creatures,â Y/Nâs response to Lianeâs question was immediate, the words out her mouth before she had a chance even to think about them.
âBut⌠we canât study that yet,â Liane pointed out, raising her eyebrows and Y/N let out a sad sigh, nodding her head.
âI know - sucks, doesnât it?â
âI donât think Iâll be taking it,â Liane admitted with a slight shiver. Y/N frowned at her, confused, and her new friend offered her an apologetic smile. âIâm not⌠great with animals. They make me nervous.â
âAll animals?â Y/N questioned in disbelief.
âPretty much - they donât trust me, I think. And so I also donât trust them. Weâve got a mutual understanding going on.â
âItâs okay, Iâll change that,â Y/N reassured her with a mischievous smile. âIâve been told I can be rather persuasive.â
âWhy does that sound like a threat?â Y/N ignored Lianeâs sigh and looked over at Eric.Â
âWhat about you?â She inquired, but Eric wasnât listening and was instead looking at his sister and Beatrice with what was almost an expression of concern that Y/N didnât quite understand. âEric?â
âWhat, sorry?â He was snapped back into the present, trying his best to feign attentiveness as he returned to the conversation.
âWhat subject are you excited for?â Liane repeated, rolling her eyes a little and running a hand through her scarlet hair, pushing it away from her face.
âWell⌠everyoneâs excited for Defence Against the Dark Arts, right?â He pointed out with a âduhâ expression.Â
Their conversation speculating over their new classes carried them to the end of breakfast, the food disappearing from the platters in front of them, the heads of house descending from the professors table at the front of the hall all carrying piles of parchment.Â
Professor Sprout was a squat woman with greying curly hair with a tattered wizards hat perched on top. Her fingernails had dirt underneath and the skin of her hands looked rough to Y/Nâs eyes, presumably from the many hours she spent outside in the Greenhouses. Her eyes, despite being tired-looking, were warm and welcoming, smile lines beginning to be etched into the skin around them.
She practically beamed at Y/N and her fellow first years.
âI didnât get to say it last night - but welcome all of you to Hufflepuff!â Her words caused quiet cheers and giggles from the first years surrounding them. A freckled boy that Y/N didnât know the name off looked as though he was going to pass out from joy. âFor anyone who doesnât know - Iâm Professor Sprout. Your head of House and also your Herbology teacher!â Jessica and Beatrice exchanged yet another excited look.
Sprout handed out the parchment, one to each student, asking each for their name, welcoming them to her house.
âAnd your name?â
âIâm Y/N, Professor, Y/N Y/L/N,â she smiled. Professor Sproutâs face fell just a little and she nodded, her warm eyes softening even further.
âItâs lovely to meet you - welcome to Hufflepuff,â she said, her voice more gentle than it had been when talking to the other first years.Y/N took her timetable from her, staring down at the little squares labelled with her lessons, not wanting to meet the inquiring gazes of her new friends who Y/N could tell had picked up on Sproutâs change in mood.
âCharms first,â Y/N muttered, reading the writing. âAnd then Herbology,â she looked at Beatrice who was watching her carefully. âPretty ideal for you, huh?â
Beatrice cracked a smile and nodded her head.
âAlright - we should probably get going. With Y/Nâs complete lack of any sense of direction at all itâll take us a good fifteen to thirty minutes to find the classroom,â Beatrice declared, standing up and stretching her arms out, smirking at her new friend who rolled her eyes, standing up as well.
âWell Jess has a thestralâs sense of direction so Iâm sure we can use her as a guide.â
âI donâtâŚ. understand?â Jessica asked, looking at Y/N with an apprehensive expression.
âIt was a compliment,â Y/N assured her as their little group of friends made their way out of the Great Hall, clutching at their timetables. Y/Nâs heart was racing with nerves, though she didnât want to admit it aloud.
They walked together to charms, speculating excitedly about what they thought the lesson could hold for them, what Flitwick had in store to teach them.Â
Unsurprisingly, considering how early they had left from breakfast, they were the first ones to find the classroom and lined up outside it, Liane talking animatedly about the different charms that she had already read up about.Â
âWho do we have it with, anyway?â Eric asked, leaning against the wall.
Y/N glanced down at the timetable still clutched in her hands and her heart leapt in her chest.
âThe Gryffindors,â she relayed, beaming.Â
âWhyâre you so pleased?â Beatrice asked.
âI already know some of them!â
âYou already have other friends?â Beatrice gasped in feigned offence.
âWhat can I say? People love me.â
âHey Y/N,â Lily tapped Y/N on her shoulder, who whirled around to grin at her.
âHi! How are you?âÂ
âGood thanks,â Lily grinned. âHow was your first night?â
âIt was fun! Oh!â Y/N turned back to her group of Hufflepuff friends. âThis is Beatrice, Eric, Jessica and Liane.â They waved at the Gryffindor girl, whose smile seemed to become shyer with the introduction. âAnd this is Lily - we met on the platform yesterday and sat together on the train.â
âNice to meet you,â Lily said, taking Beatriceâs hand.
âWhoâre your friends?â Y/N whispered to Lily, looking over at the three other girls dressed in red-hooded robes that had arrived with Lily.
Lily giggled at Y/Nâs lowered tone.
âThatâs Marlene, next to her is Alice and then thatâs Dorcas.â Lily introduced quietly, pointing at each girl in turn. Y/N nodded her head but didnât get a chance to respond further as Jamesâ booming voice rang out from down the corridor, where he had just turned the corner to the hallway where the charms class was located.
âY/N! Hufflepuff! Mum called it! Have you written to tell her yet?â
Y/N let out a heavy sigh, removing herself from the company of her friends and walked towards James, who was accompanied by a group of boys - one of whom she recognised from the platform to be Frank Longbottom.
âI havenât, no - did you write to let them know youâre in Gryffindor?âÂ
âAs if they need the confirmation,â James scoffed.Â
âWait - what do you mean your mum called it?â Y/Nâs brows furrowed together as she registered what else James had said.Â
âAges ago! When you first-â James caught himself, âwhen you first started to ask about the House system. She told me and Dad that she reckoned youâd be a Hufflepuff.â
âShe never told me that,â Y/N frowned and James shrugged.
âWell she told me,â Y/N gave him a withering look.
âI figured,â she met Siriusâ eyes over Jamesâ shoulder and he gave her the same cocky smirk that Y/N was beginning to realise was a near-permanent fixture for him.
âHey,â he nodded at her.
âGryffindor, huh?â Siriusâ smirk seemed to fall briefly, a slightly worried look on his face as he responded, though he tried to cover it with a poor substitute of his previous confidence.
âMy Mumâll be so proud.â James snickered, glancing at his new friend.
âThese are our other dormmates, by the way,â James said, gesturing to the other three boys who had joined in with the conversation held by the other Hufflepuff boys who had turned up shortly after the Gryffindors. âThatâs Remus, Peter and - you remember Dad talking about Frank?â
âYour dad was talking about me?â Frank asked, breaking out of the conversation to shoot a confused look at James and Y/N.
âMine was telling us that he went to school with your Mum,â James explained cheerfully, no hint of the embarrassment that Y/N was feeling having been caught in such an odd conversation.Â
âRightâŚâ there was still an air of unsureness in Frankâs voice.
âHow was your first night anyway? You doing okay?â James lowered his voice a little, clearly knowing that Y/N wouldnât want for their classmates to overhear him checking up on her. âYou sleep okay?â He added knowingly.
âIt was fine, James - Iâm fine, I promise,â Y/N said with a smile and gave a half shrug, glancing back to her new friends. âThey all seem really lovely.â
âIâm glad,â James smiled, nudging her shoulder with his. âAnd last night - you didn'tâŚ?â
âNo - not last night,â she confirmed. Y/N suddenly looked to Sirius, who she realised had been standing with them as they spoke, looking interested. âI snore,â was the first thing she could think of as an explanation.Â
Sirius started to laugh and Y/Nâs embarrassment washed over her, not that she had time to dwell on it when Beatrice grabbed her arm and tugged her towards the classroom that Professor Flitwick had just entered into.
âYouâll sit with me, right?â
They found a table together in the middle of the classroom, Y/N sliding into the chair nearest the window, Liane and Jessica sitting in the row in front of them, Eric joining a fellow Hufflepuff boy at the table beside them. It was no surprise at all to Y/N that James and his new friends took seats right at the back of the classroom.
âWho was that?â Beatrice whispered to her as Flitwick started his lecture.
âIâm trying to listen,â Y/N returned and Beatrice fell silent.
âNo youâre not - youâre doodling!â Beatrice accused, her voice still too low to be heard by anyone other than Y/N.
âRelevant doodling?â Y/N offered and Beatrice gave her a withering look, not bothering to reply further than that.Â
âNow itâs over to you to have a go! Remember - swish and flick!â Flitwick announced, clapping his hands cheerfully.
âAny chance you were actually paying proper attention?â Y/N asked Beatrice as Flitwick waved his wand and feathers flew across the room to land one in front of each student.
âThe levitating charm,â Lily whispered from the table behind them. Y/N looked over her shoulder at the Gryffindor girl who was smiling. âYou know - Wingardium Leviosa.â
âThanks,â Y/N whispered in return.Â
âBut who is he?â Beatrice repeated again, the classroom filling with noise as the eager First Years began to cast their first spells. Y/N got her own out of her robes and shrugged nonchalantly.
âJust a guy I grew up with - our parents were friends.â

Oh man Iâve had a lot of shitty friends, but one of them definetely takes the price. We had that kind of friendship where you joke around constantly, and it was all fun. Until after a few months where I could sense a change in the over all atmosphere of our frienship. The jokes became tougher and more and more ruthless. In the last few months he was basically bullying me, giving me shit for everything I did. He made fun of my music taste, my style, my hair, my face, my personality, everything. He basically broke my confidence to a point where I tried changing the way I was for him to not pick on me. I became super depressed and I was close to taking my own life several times. People around me started noticing that he was bullying me, and when they asked me about it, I just told them it was nothing and that I was just being sensitive if I felt offended about what he told me. I remember one morning where he was picking at me, and I told him I was feeling like shit and that my mental health was doing really bad, and I actually apologized for it. I told him I was sorry for being quiet, when my mind was just spinning around the thought of not wanting to live. He told me that it wasnât strange, that I was just being boring as usual. At that point, I understood that he didnât give a shit about me, and I started avoiding him. Nowadays, heâs still mad at me. According to him, I betrayed him by starting to avoid him. Heâs a dick, to say the least.<< DUDE. I had a friend just like this in high school. She was a girl but was the exact same way. Always making rude jokes about my appearance in public, specifically my small breasts, and making fun of literally everything I did, and then would tell me I was being dramatic whenever I got mad at her for it. Like, I understand friends joking around with each other about things like that every and now and then, but this was literally ALL. THE. TIME. Sheâd tell me to stop being so sensitive and take a joke. She also would tell me I had no right to feel depressed or sad because I had a good life instead of understanding and comforting me like a decent fucking person, and recognizing that mental health issues affect everyone. So when I finally stopped hanging out with her, she got pissed and removed me as a friend from Facebook. Good riddance.Â
