I just did a binge (re)watch of 'The Smoke' with a baby Taron Egerton and now I really want to write a whump-found-family-redemption-hurt/comfort-fic where Kev basically becomes Asbo's pseudo dad.
(so depressed that there's none for me to read already
What do you mean there's no fics where Kev witnesses or deals with Gog's terrifying psycho-pathological physical and coercive control over Dennis/Asbo?)

A couple shots from The Smile's rehearsal at RAK Studio 1 in January 2022, in preparation for their three live-streamed Magazine shows. Thom's phone, resting on the music stand, has an Intellijel sticker on its case. The photo below, from Intellijel's facebook, shows a closeup of the sticker design. According to Intellijel, these stickers were new in 2019, so Thom must've bought some new Intellijel modules in 2019-2021.

It’s 105 degrees and I’m so fucking hot this makes me think about how the hell Silver survived his ruined future in 06 especially with that big coat on his chest I would’ve literally melted onto the ground

What is the smoke about?
Hi!
The smoke was one season and it was about a UK London firefighter crew. The main story arc was about Kev (the guv) who was attacked by a man in a hoodie when he was trying to save a baby from a fire and got horribly burned because of it (and sadly the baby died). Shift forward nearly a year and he's back at work and rookie Dennis (Asbo) has joined - who the viewers know was actually at the fire with the attacker (Gog). Gog comes across as a psychopath and enjoys tormenting /controlling most of the residents of the council estate that he and Asbo live at. Gog is cruel and a bully, particularly to Rosa, the mother of the baby who died.
Gog appears to have a massive control over Asbo, both through physical means, and coercive control and as Asbo tries to distance himself from Gog, and form a tentative (if misguided) friendship/mentor like relationship with Kev (and redeem himself in the process), Gog doesn't like Asbo not depending on him anymore.
Asbo clearly also has a strained relationship with his dad (getting out of prison and absent for a big chunk of his life) and Gog plays on this and is likely, another reason for Asbo's attachment to Kev, as dysfunctional and rather chaotic as Kev is, he's probably the most stable father figure Asbo has had in his life.
Kev is also a rather complex character - traumatised by the fire and attack and dealing with the injuries still nearly a year later in ways that are clearly not healthy.
Then we have the other 'fire fam' - Mal, the best friend who has a complicated relationship with Kev and his other half, Trish, and is clearly not a fan of Asbo - Trish, who loves Kev, but has secrets of her own, Little Al who is in debt and can't pay for child maintenance and takes to cage fighting to pay the bills, Rob/Snip, a firefighter struggling with Asthma and already has 4 children, Ziggy, who clearly isn't happy with things at home, and Billy/Mince, who's reunited with his lost love from 20 years previous.
I fell in love with this series way before I fell in love with the 9-1-1 fire fam. I think if you search Dennis Asbo Severs you might actually see some uploaded episodes.
Not sure if I explained it well, just that's its a little underrated gem <3

Thom Yorke’s Gear for The Smile’s NPR Tiny Desk Show
Tumblr media
Thom at the piano during Panavision.
For The Smile’s Tiny Desk performance, Thom played his Fender Mustang bass on The Smoke and his vintage Guild Starfire II bass on Skirting On The Surface. Although we don’t get to hear the song, we can see that Thom played his 1964 Fender Jazzmaster when they performed We Don’t Know What Tomorrow Brings. The upright piano on Panavision belongs to Tiny Desk, as do the amps and microphones (we also explained this our last post). In an Instagram post, Bob Boilen mentioned that the band rehearsed for more than an hour before deciding which songs to play. This explains the range of guitars and basses that Thom brought along, only three of which would appear in the final video. Thom also brought a small pedalboard with a selection of his pedals for the show, and some of them went unused too — notably the Death By Audio Echo Dream 2, which he uses on You Will Never Work In Television Again.
Thom’s Instruments
Upright Piano
Fender EOB Stratocaster guitar
Fender Jazzmaster guitar in Olympic White (1964)
Martin 00-18 acoustic guitar (with Fishman Rare Earth pickup)
Fender Mustang bass in Olympic White
Guild Starfire II hollowbody bass in Cherry-Red (late-60s)
Thom’s Amplifiers (shared with Jonny):
Tiny Desk’s Fender ’68 Custom Deluxe Reverb combo amplifier
Tiny Desk’s Ampeg RB-110 combo amplifier
Thom’s Effects Pedals:
Guitar/Bass->
Boss TU-2 tuner
Death By Audio Echo Dream 2
Death By Audio Interstellar Overdriver
Earthquaker Devices Plumes overdrive
Telenordia TK-23 Kompressor
-> Amplifier
GigRig Generator and Distributor power supply

A photo of Thom’s mini bass and guitar pedalboard for the Tiny Desk show (joshrogosin). Looks like it’s just a plank with some velcro, almost certainly put together just for Tiny Desk.

We can see Thom’s EOB Stratocaster with black covers on the Fernandes pickups. This was probably one of Fender’s original prototypes for Ed, before they sourced white pickup covers for the final version.
The Martin acoustic the newer one which Thom acquired around 2015, likely to save his older Martin from touring wear. It’s easiest to identify by the wear in the finish near the soundhole. Thom used his older Martin acoustic to performance Free In The Knowledge at the Royal Albert Hall in 2021. But for The Smile shows this year, he played this newer Martin, as can be seen in video from the Montreux Jazz Festival.
