CHAMPIGNAC CC and STUFF PART 1
Before the upload of Champignac, let's talk about the CC used in the World ...
Let's face it, there is a little bit more CC used in Champignac than in our other Sims 3 Worlds, because we really wanted to create a French ambiance for a French flavored world :)
Don't worry : except 2 or 3 things, we still use the same creators stuff aka mainly ATS ( Around the Sims 3 ) and Cyclone Sue ( from TSR ) for the build part. And of course, our own stuff which is not huge :D like our Rabbit Holes you may find here on Tumblr ...
Tumblr media
Before any further, the fantastic towers you need to get in order to fully enjoy Champignac come from MTS ( Mod the Sims ) and have been converted from The Sims Medieval by Votenga ( MEDIEVAL TOWERS & BUILDINGS ) you may find there :)
Tumblr media
I hope you'll enjoy discover all these gems in Champignac ;)
our "Stadium" is the Football Club by Norn @ MTS and tumblr
the Junk Yard is based on : Old Art Deco gas station yard by flora2 @ MTS :)
le Marché Bio ( Bio Market ) is based on Farmers Market by efolger997 @ MTS
the Supernatural Tavern is based on Old Tomes bookstore by Vera J @ MTS
the Bistro of Champignac is based on Rattlesnake Juice by bellakenobi @ MTS
the Vampire Lounge is fully based on Pastor John's Church by Diwtay @ MTS
the beautiful City Hall of Champignac is a simplified version of a community lot by Jeanpass ( here on tumblr )
the Museum of Champignac we named : Villa Medicis is a creation of Petalbot ( Palazzo Venezia )
Let's talk now about the CC ...
As you already know ;) ATS made a lot of French stuff for the Sims 3. In fact, it's even THE Place to find everything you need to create a French flavored World :D so, here everything we used in Champignac

As said in the Road Map previous post, the tech-hippie website is already online and running fine. And the Sims 3 Lounge is mostly back too :) oh ! and Champignac will be uploaded later into the night or tomorrow maximum ...
Welcome in France :D

Sulani Beach Rental
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A small rental house on the beach of Sulani where the comfort and convenience of modern furnishings meet elements of traditional island architecture and culture. Perfect for a single sim or a couple who love scuba-diving or water sports!
An entry to Klötzchenvendel shell challenge by Allyriana.
One Bedroom - One Bathroom
Special Features: outdoor seating area with bar and grill - jet ski (there seems to be an issue that if the lot is set to rental and a sim is sent there, the jet ski will disappear. It shouldn’t be a problem if set to residential though)
Lot Type: Rental (at least it’s intended as one; for some reason I couldn’t save it as this lot type though, so it appears as a residential on the gallery, and you’d have to change it back to a rental manually in your game. I’m really sorry for this, but I unfortunately couldn’t find a fix for this either...) / Residential
Lot: Pier Perfection, 30x20, Lani St. Taz, Sulani
Price: § 46,959
Packs: IslandLiving | TinyLiving | CoolKitchen | DesertLuxe

No Rules Legacy - Favorite Generational Gameplay
Tumblr media
The margin between one and ten was really, really slim. I loved this legacy from start to finish, and there were no boring generations for me. I especially loved exploring parts of the game I'd never tried before. This is a long one, so 👇
GENERATION 6 - I'd never really explored the equestrian aspects of the Pets EP, and playing with Alexandra and Buran brought out my latent inner horse girl in a big way.
GENERATION 8 - I'd also never tried the singer career of Showtime (or really any of Showtime tbh) and there was no better sim to guide the way than Fable Solomon. Pairing her with a hot former Grim Reaper was also fun, but helping her become a pop sensation was a blast.
GENERATION 1 - Nara got the legacy off on a wild foot with all her university shenanigans. Because I typically pair my OC sims with Jeffery Dean, I really wanted her to end up with Jacob Salaman, but he was the literal worst. Still, it was fun to watch their lust-hate relationship implode. And Jeffery got the girl in the end.
GENERATION 3 - Daisy wins the prize for making me laugh the hardest at any gameplay ever. All I wanted was for her to have three kids with three guys and then choose one as a spouse. Instead, she had two sets of twins and two more kids with the three guys. And the best of them hated children. Her generation was pure chaos every second and I loved it.
GENERATION 7 - The subplot with resurrecting Anna was me, trying to write myself out of a corner, and it was bonkers. But Keahi raising Fable on his own was incredibly special. And maybe some of my best writing. IDK.
GENERATION 2 - Kana and Noel's outdoor lot was my first attempt at off-grid play and it was great fun. I loved their relationship, loved watching Noel rise through the ranks at the restaurant, and Kana was the cutest little pregnant mama I've ever seen.
GENERATION 10 - Despite kind of rushing it at the end because my save was so unstable, Dylan's generation was great. I loved giving him a lifelong friend group at college and exploring all the different ITF futures, which I'd never really done before.
GENERATION 9 - Scuba diving is my absolute favorite in-game activity and it was really great to see the diving career through to the end for once, and Mara loved diving more than anything.
GENERATION 4 - I hadn't ever gone beyond casual nectar making, so that was pretty cool. In achieving her lifetime wish, Noelle made a LOT of wine, so I sold off most of it as the generations progressed. But Dylan still has one bottle of every nectar she made and some of them are worth a small fortune.
GENERATION 5 - Poor Mateo didn't really have a lot to do. It took him almost no time at all to collect the minor pets, and because he was a loner, having an actual job stressed him out. He was happy spending time with his family and it was lovely, even though it wasn't the most exciting gameplay.

Unlocked half of the islands now:
Beryl Shoals - simply boat past the island to unlock.
---
Plunder Cove - Assemble 4 map pieces to unlock (found in chests while diving or in bottles).
---
Plumbob Island - Find a special Message in a Bottle.
---
Refuge Island (above) - Check in to one of the resorts (one day is long enough), then ask at the front desk about adventures.
You’ll be told to talk to a local about Refuge Island - I first went to the derelict resort (purchasable for §0).  I was directed to talk to Edward Dregg (the resident playable ghost).  This was a bust.  I attempted to talk to him but the opportunity chain was dropped.  I used to MC to add it back and this time, my Sim did the ew ghost thing and dropped the opportunity.  I couldn’t add it again with MC, so I went to another resort.  I was directed to one of the resort mixologists, and after several interruptions for autographs, was finally able to speak to him.
I was set up with a series of additional tasks (having to report to the Science lab after each) which included:
Obtain 3 kelp (I could have bought it, but needed to dive anyway).
walking on a fire pit (Sims remove their shoes for this, so perhaps that script can be adapted to a rug when entering a home???),
fighting a shark (this was completely random as I was trying to have my Sim talk to the mermaid), and
searching the records at City Hall for the missing map (my Sim had a wish to cast a Restoration Ritual, so City Hall got cleaned up).
---
What’s left:
Cay to the City - Rescue 35 Sims as a lifeguard.
---
No Trouble Atoll - Own a 5-Star resort.  You don’t have to build one up, simply purchase one if you have the Simoleans.
---
Mermaid’s Secret Island - Befriend a mermaid (at least 70% relationship) and hang out with them at a dive spot.  Just wait for them to offer to show your Sim the island.
---
And
Diver’s Den - Reach level 10 in Scuba Diving skill and find the underwater cave to exit you there.
---
There’s always the cheat code to unlock all at once.  Open the cheat window (CTRL+Shift+C) and type  discoverAllUnchartedIslands

Sims 4 Pack Ranking
Wondering which Sims 4 pack to buy? Here is my personal ranking.
Expansion Packs
1. Seasons
Tumblr media
Great pack! It brings so much to the game! Weather gives the game a sense of realism. Being able to control the sim calendar is a God-send! You can add your own holidays and schedule events! Traditions are fun and bring family and friends together. I love throwing a Black and White bash on New Year’s Eve and a Dinner party on Christmas Day. It also helps you keep track of your sims’ schedules. Not to mention swings, sprinklers you can play with, kiddie pools, flower-arranging tables, snow activities, scarecrows, water baloon buckets, roller-blading and ice skating rinks and so much more! CAS and Bulid and Buy are also wonderful! And finally you can choose sims’ hot weather and cold weather outfits!
2. Cats and Dogs
Tumblr media
I am biased because I love animals. Pets are a great addition to the family. You can train dogs, take them for walks and play with them. CAS for them is amazing! Brindleton Bay is a great seaside new world. And you can create and own your own vet!
3. Island Living
Tumblr media
Certainly not everyone’s favourite pack but I absolutely love it! Sulani is a gorgeous world. Living the island lifestyle is one of my favourite’s to experience in this whole game. And now you can vacation their for a wonderful honeymoon or family trip! There’s mermaids (which you can become or create), sand activities, water activities like swimming, jet-skiing, canoeing, diving, scuba-diving and playing with dolphins. CAS and Build and Buy are amazing!
4. Discover University
Tumblr media
My one issue with this pack is that I think it takes too long to graduate, especially when you’re playing on short lifespan. But apart from that, I have so much fun completing each students daily and term check-lists and it feels so good for your sim to enter a career at a higher level, already armed with the necessary skills. Living on campus is fun, especially in dorms. You can play table tennis, juggle a football or join the rabbit-hole team, build robots, ride bikes and more!
5. Get Together
Tumblr media
Another pack that is not everyone’s favourite. I personally find it to be an essential. I use clubs all the time to allow family and friends to get together and socialise autonomously or to create specialised clubs where they complete hobbies autonomously and raise their skills. I find the nightclub experience so fun and take my sims out to one every friday in their clubs or by hosting a dance party or both! And the world is gorgeous! I love the little cafe’s!
6. Get Famous
Tumblr media
I end up having a lot of performer sims, so the fame system and perks come in very handy. And your sim can get famous doing anything with the help of a drone and a video recording station! I think it adds to the game working towards your sim becoming not only a painter but a world-renowned one! There’s even a music station where you can create your own beats! The actor career is my favourite in the whole game. It’s so fun having your sims dress up in different costumes and perform a sword fight on set.
7. City Living
Tumblr media
The City is beautiful. The festivals are amazing! My favourite is the spice festival because yes to my sims experiencing new cultures! I love living in an apartment. There are so many quirks, like your neighbour forcing their way in to borrow your shower or for game night. Love shooting hoops, setting off fireworks and adding all the new dishes to unique restaurants.
8. Snowy Escape
Tumblr media
I’m still learning about this game as it’s fairly new. Love exploring the new culture. Their aren’t as many things to do at the festivals as I feel their were at those that came with City Living. Great food to add to restaurants. Snowboarding and skiing are really fun and it’s great that kids can do it too and that all ages, including todllers can snowboard. As someone who goes on a lot of walks, I look forward to trying out hiking. It looks really fun! I just feel this pack could have packed in a little more.
9. Get To Work
Tumblr media
I’ve had this game for ages and I’m still yet to buy my own retail store. I need to get on that! I haven’t played the scientist career yet but I’ve played the doctor one and the law enforcement one and they do get boring after a while if your playing them actively everyday. Perhaps I should not play actively some days in the future. I think I just need to play with this one more.
10. Eco Lifestyle
Tumblr media
I was really dissapointed when I heard this game was coming out. I’m all for saving the environment but I wasn’t sure it was something I’d have fun playing with in the sims and I haven’t really had much fun with it. Candle making is kinda fun but I hate that you have to have bits and pieces to make them as they are not easy to get. The only thing I really like in this pack is juice fizzing and the neighbourhood action plans. Free-love is a great addition for my polyamorous sims but it sucks that once they’re out of the neighbourhood, they get jealous again. Living off a dumpster is a fun challenge but it gets boring after a while. I don’t really like CAS or build and buy that much either.
Game Packs
1. Parenthood
Tumblr media
Great pack! Adds so much depth to family play and I am pretty much exclusively a family player, even when I play with supernatural sims. I love that parents and guardians can shape their children’s personalities. Build and Buy is so pretty and colourful! It screams family play! Love the kids school projects. Love being able to ground kids and put them on time out, disciplining and encouraging them and even ordering them to do things.
2. Vampires
Tumblr media
I looove playing with supernatural sims! In general I prefer witches and wizards and magic to vampires but this is just a solid pack. Build and Buy is beautiful and allows you to create unique gothic and historical buildings. CAS is very cool too! Forgotton Hollow is gorgeous. I absolutely love the look of it! I want to live their! I don’t care how creepy it is. The vampire powers system is so good and gives you a great goal to work towards. I get such a thrill using powers on and biting other sims at night. It looks so spooky! Super speed is so useful! And I love creating vampire clubs and having them have epic looking vampire duals, letting them spar and train eachother and turn other sims into slaves or vampires or vampire slaves! Much darker than the other games. I just wish kids could have vampire powers and have a vampire form.
3. Realm of Magic
Tumblr media
I don’t know what it is but this game doesn’t seem as in depth as Vampires. It should but it somehow doesn’t. But it’s still a very good pack that satisfies my Potterhead needs well enough. You can create so many different types of spellcasters but I personally like going to the magic realm and learning all the spells and potions. It’s so fun duplicating yourself and setting sims on fire or conjuring a meal out of nowhere. Build and Buy is beautiful and duels are epic! I only wish kids could cast spells and it wasn’t so easy to learn all the spells and complete the aspirations.
4. Dine Out
Tumblr media
A lot of people say this game is glitched and it does take, like a whole day to have a 3-course meal but I personally enjoy that. I like taking family or friend groups out to beautiful restaurants from the gallery on a Sunday and letting them socialise their all day while waiting for their meals and enjoying the atmosphere. I use this pack all the time. I love owning restaurants. I love choosing the menus and creating restaurants that reflect different cultures’ cuisine. Running one is really fun. It’s hard to get a balance, especially while starting out but with perks you can watch your restaurant thrive.
5. Strangerville
Tumblr media
I played this through for the first time recently and I really enjoyed it! Much more than I thought I would. I love the possessed sims. They are so freaky. It’s a shame that it doesn’t feel like a game you’d want to play again but the world is nice.
6. Jungle Adventure
Tumblr media
I confess. I entered a (I think it’s called a) temple for the first time at the end of last year. It took me forever to figure out how to get to one but when I finally did I found the game play a bit lackluster. But it’s a beautiful jungle-y world that is worth visiting for a vacation and exploring the culture is fun! Build and Buy is also amazing. And I liked adding the new cuisine to my restaurants.
7. Outdoor Retreat
Tumblr media
I haven’t played this one in ages but I remember I had fun doing it. Basically, you could have a similar camping experience in Selvadorada or any other world. But it’s fun for the winter log cabins and if you’re looking for a more forest-y vibe.
8. Spa Day
Tumblr media
Gorgeous Build and Buy! Worth it for that alone but I feel this pack could have been a stuff pack if you look at it compared to what we’re going to get in, say, Paranormal Stuff. Working on the wellness skill is cool. Teleporting is useful but a bit slow. I like having my sims go to a yoga class, meditate, get a massage and go to the sauna.
9. Star Wars: Journey to Batuu
Tumblr media
I’ve seen like 2 Star Wars films and had no idea what was going on both times. Similarly, I was pretty confused while playing but I can’t deny I had fun completing the missions, fighting with lightsabers and chilling with my droid. I did get board after a while though. It doesn’t really fit in the game but I’m happy for Star Wars fans. I’d be estatic if they did a Harry Potter, Once Upon A Time or X-Men pack!
Stuff Packs
1. Kids Room
Tumblr media
By far the best for me. You get so much stuff for kids. Love the addition of Voidcritters! The kids clothing is adorable and the Buy objects are incredible! Perfect for kids and creating unique rooms for them!
2. Toddler
Tumblr media
Love the new toddler play equipment! It is so, so cute to watch them play. The CAS is so adorable as are the Buy objects. I have yet to use play dates but they sound great for my families!
3. Backyard
Tumblr media
Love the water slide. My sims have so much fun on it. And the objects are great! Perfect for building a family garden. It makes me want to use the garden more in the sims.
4. Spooky
Tumblr media
Not everyone’s favourite but I love spooky things (I was deprived of Halloween as a child!). I use it all the time to have spooky dress-up parties or for spooky night clubs or lounges. It’s the perfect thing to flesh out Spooky Day from Seasons.
5. Romantic Garden
Tumblr media
I just think it’s pretty lol. CAS is really nice as are the buy items. The wishing well is fun and great to cheat with to bring back dead sims quickly, I recently discovered. There’s nothing more wonderful than going to a beautiful flowery garden at night with your sims couples.
6. Bowling Night
Tumblr media
I find bowling pretty fun in the sims. It’s great for a night out with the family. I am biased because I love bowling with family on special occasions in real life. It’s great for sims birthdays and Build and Buy is so unique as is CAS.
7. My First Pet
Tumblr media
Again, not everyone’s favourite but the items are freaking cute! Perfect for kids rooms and having a pet rodent is pretty cool as are the new CAS for Cats and Dogs. I wouldn’t be opposed to them expanding another pack like this was used to do in the future.
8. Luxury Party
Tumblr media
I use the buffet table and the chocolate fountain all the damn time.
9. Perfect Patio
Tumblr media
For the hot tub mainly! But the Buy items are great.
10. Cool Kitchen
Tumblr media
I just love having my sims eat ice-cream on a Sunday. There are so many flavour combinations!
11. Movie Hangout
Tumblr media
I love my sims having movie night with popcorn lol. And CAS and Build and Buy are pretty cool.
12. Vintage Glamour
Tumblr media
CAS and Buy items are awesome. I love the vanity table and that kids can use it. The butler is useful but only a few of my sims live that kind of life.
13. Tiny Living
Tumblr media
I was so disapointed when this pack was anounced but actually having a Tiny House comes with a lot of useful benefits. And Build and Buy and CAS are so pretty. Wish the furniture was tinier and the bed didn’t kill your sims all the time! I would actually like to use that bed!
14. Laundry Day
Tumblr media
I was upset that simmers voted for this. It adds realism, so I’ll give it points for that.
15. Nifty Knitting
Tumblr media
Again, I was upset that simmers voted for this but the Buy items are so colourful and pretty. Knitting can be kinda fun and some of the knittables are cute, especially the baby grows! Plopsy is a fun addition but I haven’t been able to make much money off of it.
16. Moschino
Tumblr media
Love the update to photography. I use it with one fashion forward household. I hate CAS and Build and Buy.
17. Fitness
Tumblr media
I never use the climbing wall but I like the wood design on the Buy items.

100 Berry Mermaid Baby Challenge: Rules and Resources
Tumblr media
@animecutie1503 kindly sent me this request in the comments of my most recent post and I thought it would be fun and a good idea to kind of compile the sort of guidelines I’m following. Plus, I enjoy helping other simmers out, and I’ve had a bit of a rough day so this will be a good way to distract me from my sorrows. This post is pretty long, so the rest of it will be under the cut.
Firstly, all credit to the original Sims 4 100 Baby Challenge goes to @snarky-sims-witch and you can find the rules here: https://snarky-sims-witch.tumblr.com/post/181535303038/tos-i-am-the-original-writer-of-the-sims-4-version
(I didn’t even realize she and I are mutuals until I went seeking the original rules of the challenge--oops)
If you read her rules, it won’t take you very long to realize that I’m...not really following them. Another oops. I have a habit of modifying challenges to my own personal play style, so I have basically taken her concept and used it to mold my own. That being said, what I am about to write are not to be considered ‘rules’ of any kind and as such should not be credited or associated with all of Briar’s hard work on the official rules.
Without further ado, here is how I am playing my ‘challenge’:
I was first and foremost inspired to do this gameplay after seeing this video by @simlicy: https://youtu.be/KqRKwiRlDU4
Therefore, I absolutely used the free real estate cheat to move Moonflower immediately into this house. I have not used any money cheats afterwards though, as I don’t like to cheat in general.
Moonflower makes money from her paintings, but I also allow her to hold a rabbithole career off of her home lot.
Using MC Command Center, I play using a custom long-ish lifespan which is as follows:
Babies: 2 days
Toddlers: 10 days
Children: 15 days
Teens: 20 days
Young Adults: 40 days
Adults: 40 days
Elders: 20 days
Instead of trying to have 100 babies in as few generations as I can, I am playing this legacy style, and am having a set 10 kids in each generation for 10 generations. The youngest daughter will still become heiress however, as per the original rules.
Therefore, I don’t use donors, I create a specific spouse for each generation who is allowed to move into the house after marriage and help out around the house however he likes.
I randomize all traits for the children, and I do not age them up early. I don’t set goals for skills, aspirations, or grades; it’s all purely casual in my gameplay.
In my save, I create the spouses initially as human sims, but then have Moonflower/the heiress give them mermadic kelp to transform them into a merman before conception of the first child. This guarantees that all the children will be mermaids too.
You can find mermadic kelp easily once you reach level 6 fitness and explore the cave on Mua Pel’am. You should only have to do this once because each time you find the kelp, it gives you ten at a time. However, I cheated and bought all of Moonflower’s kelp in buydebug. You can also purchase mermadic kelp using lifetime reward points, and sometimes dolphins will catch kelp for your sim if you have a high enough friendship with one. I believe you can find kelp while scuba diving as well, although I’m not 100% positive on that.
Those are about the only guidelines I follow for my own personal gameplay. Next up, berry resources.
The vast majority of TS4 berry simmers use @tainoodles‘ fantastic, 76-color Sorbets Remix palette. All resources (skin, eyes) can be found on her sideblog dedicated specifically to this palette: @noodlescc. However, I’ll go the extra mile and link you specifically to the post where you can download her berry skins and eyes: https://noodlescc.tumblr.com/post/182529315304/sorbets-remix-palette-sorry-for-the-external-link
As for hairs/clothes/furniture/etc, Tai also has a sideblog for that, too: @noodlessorbets. Here, she reblogs just about every piece of cc that is recolored in her palette. She also has all of the pack hairs that she recolored herself linked on @noodlescc.
Another thing you can do is recolor stuff for yourself if you wish. Recoloring is very easy. Most people start out recoloring hair, since it is generally simpler to do than clothes or furniture. Here is a good video tutorial on how to get started with recoloring: https://youtu.be/Phs43_5T8ds. Tai so generously shared her Photoshop actions and S4S palette, linked in the same post where you can find her skins and eyes.
One thing I have done for myself is recolor the mermaid facepaint scales that came with Island Living in the Sorbets Remix palette, because I enjoy putting them on all of my mermaids. You can find and download those here: https://elfiesim.tumblr.com/post/186606220894/island-living-scales-face-paint-in-noodles
An important thing to note is that berry genetics do not function properly. Babies will be born with vanilla skin, and sometimes even vanilla eyes and hair colors. If children do happen to be born with berry hair and eyes, the colors will often be random and not match their parents’. A way around that is to use dice or a random number generator to determine for yourself what colors each baby inherits. For example, I got Aquamarine’s colors by randomizing the numbers 1 and 2 three times: once for hair, once for eyes, and once for skin. If number 1 was randomized, she got Seafoam’s color. If number 2 was randomized, she got Moonflower’s. The random number generator I use can be found here: https://www.random.org/
Last but not least, to make matters even more complicated, berry colors do not ‘stick’ on toddlers, children, and teens. What I mean by that is, if you go into CAS with your toddler, child, or teen sim to change his/her outfits or hairstyle, the colors of his/her hair and/or eyes will often change as you cycle through his/her outfits. As frustrating as this is, there is an easy way to combat it with MC Command Center, as demonstrated in this post: https://crisisbarn.tumblr.com/post/164078549858/how-to-get-child-toddler-hairs-to-stick-with
This should be enough to get you started with berry sims and the 100 Baby Challenge. I hope it is helpful and if you have any further questions, I’ll be happy to help you. :)

The Great Barrier Reef is Dying Faster then David Attenborough
As I turned off the godly voice of nature's Grandfather, Sir David Attenborough, I stared blankly at the wall ahead. A solemn tear trickled down my cheek as I wallowed in self-pity, eventually coming to a profound realisation… humans’ suck. While we’re complaining about the Woolworths plastic bag ban, the Great Barrier Reef is turning into an underwater wasteland. Overwhelming increases in carbon dioxide emissions are making our oceans warmer and more acidic (unless you are a Donald Trump enthusiast and in that case, Global Warming is just a hoax). In 2016, a rise in sea temperature and acidity spiked a major bleaching event which destroyed two-thirds of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
High school graduate Megan Sims looks out the window with a solemn expression on her face as she reminisces the Coral Monitoring and Turtle Rehabilitation program she recently participated. “Where we went there was a lot of coral rubble, which means that not only has the coral died but none has come through under that,” she says, her expression turning to anger. “I remember I was writing 50% coral rubble for most of the sights. It's just so upsetting because we were snorkeling in the most pristine part of the reef and it was still horribly damaged.” What Megan witnessed is what Professor Terry Hughes, director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies calls “The worst mass bleaching event in history.” As human beings, we are the only species with the power to destroy the planet and the only ones who can save it. So, here is why we aren’t.
As a 20-year-old University student, Isabelle Siberling looks at the world with unwavering optimism and hope. Having recently traveled to Canada to take part in an International Entrepreneurial Social Justice Competition named World’s Challenge Challenge. Amongst waffles and maple syrup, Isabelle and her team established a social media education campaign named #icannsavethereef. There Isabelle developed five daily habits that an individual can change to limit their greenhouse gas emissions. The young environmental enthusiast says it is sending a message to Australians that there is a solution that they can reach individually. “They need to become the voice that the reef does not have,” says Isabelle. As true blue Aussies, why aren't we fighting for Nemo?
 1. People are too set in their ways to make a change.
Life has never been more convenient. Need food? UberEats. Want clothes? Order online. Feel like a movie? Netflix and chill. However, as creatures of habit, we have become dangerously complacent and conditioned to our newly found lifestyle of ease and access, creating an epidemic of inertia. A study conducted by the Harvard Business School showed that people mainly resist change for the following reasons; a loss of control, disruption, and excess uncertainty. In the context of changing our lifestyles to support the survival of the reef, it becomes a matter of priority and sacrifice. How far are we willing to go to prevent an environmental catastrophe? Not that far apparently. “As individuals, we need to stand up and begin to make the small changes that send messages to big companies that we want to be more sustainable, we can make a huge impact by changing the smallest things that will hardly inconvenience us,” says Isabelle. As human beings, we are adaptable creatures and can easily make a lasting impact, according to psychiatrist Abigail Brenner. “We move from the passive state of just watching how things unfold to taking some action that enables us to utilise the change to create an outcome of our own choice,” says Dr. Brenner.
 2. Out of sight out of mind
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on earth stretching for 2,300 kilometers along the Queensland coast. Isabelle sips through her reusable coffee cup as she remembers a childhood full of snorkels, laughter, and chafing. “Reef conservation is a passion of mine as I am originally from the Whitsundays which is alongside the Great Barrier Reef,” she says. “Growing up, I always had the opportunity to go out to the reef, which allowed me to see firsthand the deterioration in the condition of the reef and become passionate about saving it.” It’s not until we put on our scuba Steve costumes and see first hand the state of the reef that we can truly grasp the devastation. Dr. John Charlie Veron became the first Coral Reef Scientist in 1972 and discovered a third of the world’s known species. “I've been diving the same spots on the reef for 40 years, and over time I go back, and I am sickened by some of the changes I see,” He tells David Attenborough passionately. “Sometimes I go back to the same spot, and I can barely recognise it, some species have been wiped out from the shallows already.” Although the reef may seem to many as a far away underwater wonderland, the reproductions of its demise will impact everyone.
 3. Capitalist Greed
Besides a decent kangaroo, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the leading tourist attractions in Australia. The Great Barrier Reef Foundation estimates the value of the reef is at a whopping $56 billion, with a total direct use benefit to domestic tourists at $29 billion, and overall direct use benefit to recreational vision $3 billion. The reality is that the reef is a substantial economic force, attracting two million visitors each year. Marine expert and Professor at James Cook University, Joshua Cinner, says the reef is a huge source of income for the Australian Government. “Market pressures for Australian reef fish now come from overseas; port dredging and shipping across the reef are spurred on by fossil fuel exports to Asia, and a housing crisis in the United States can batter reef tourism half a world away.” For the hundreds of businesses that rely on the reef, there remains a capitalist mentality that ensures the economy takes precedence over the impact on the environment.
 4. Our impact feels Insignificant
Not using one plastic straw isn't going to make a difference, said seven billion people. It’s pretty straightforward, our oceans control the weather, the climate, the air we breathe. Without a healthy ocean, we do not have a healthy planet. As we go about our mundane lives, we remember that 7.2 billion people share this planet and that the significance of our existence is limited to 400 friends on Facebook. While this is extremely depressing, what is worse is the possibility of losing the reef, so buy a reusable bag and get over it. “Often, I find that people neglect the responsibility because they feel overwhelmed by the situation,” says Isabelle. ”When you begin to research into the issues that the reef is facing, it can feel as though there is no way to fix them. This can be disheartening and put people into a short-term headspace where they say that it 'isn't my problem' or 'someone else will find a solution. This is a dangerous way of thinking as individually; we can make a difference by taking steps towards protecting the environment.”

Sims 4 Survivor Challenge - The Hunger Games Edition
I have modified and added some additional rules to the Living Off The Land Challenge by kiwi84 to add some more gameplay aspects that I felt would work with this challenge and to make it a little more interesting and a LOT more chaotic, so I came up with the Survivor Challenge - The Hunger Games Edition.  There are so many good challenge ideas that I wanted to pull inspiration from a few of them and come up with something that hopefully everyone can do with the packs they have in their game. Feedback and other ideas are always welcome.
BASIC RULES
You must pick one world for your Sim to live in except for a destination world.
Your founding Sim can never move, because you are stranded on an island.
You can not use any cheats including Debug objects.  The only cheat you can use is MOO. (move objects on)
Your founding Sim can never work or do small jobs, they are in the middle of nowhere.
You are not allowed to have any computers, tablets or TVs in your home.  If you have the lot trait Off The Grid, you may use that to add some more difficulty and to make your Sims' overall comfortability end up in the crapper.
If for some reason your sim ends up preggers, your kids can NOT go to school. Also children can not compete in the Survival Challenges, what do you take me for a monster? lol  But of course when they are young adults..let the “hunger” games begin..*Que villainous laugh*
You can change and add holidays as you like, but you MUST have one event each week in which your Sims will compete to see who gets to go to the survival Island. HOORAY!
You can have a pet starting out, if you do choose to have a pet you can NOT take them to the vet if they get sick.  We are on an island, it’s survival of the fittest here people.  If you do get a pet you can train them up to hunt for you.
Each Wednesday a new Sim must wash up on your island and be added to your family.  You can NOT control the other Sims, only your original Sim.  If for some reason your original Sim dies in a challenge, you can pick another Sim to play, but the same rules will apply you can only control your new Sim.
CREATING YOUR FOUNDER
Your founding Sim can be a male or female, but they must start out with the Freelance Botanist aspiration or the Angling Ace aspiration.  You can pick whatever traits you like, but they will be stranded on an island and their clothes may not be in the best of shape.
Once your sim completes the botanist aspiration, you can pick another one from the following choices:
Angling Ace
Outdoor Enthusiast
Lord/Lady of the knits
Soulmate (this might be a hard one since you can never leave your world lol)
FOUNDER  RULES:
You can choose any world for your Sim to live in except for a destination world.  (I love Sulani for this if you have the option, for a castaway theme) When you pick your world you must delete all the other builds on the other lots and remove all the other Sims.  You must then choose a lot in that world and your current Sim can never move.  You can travel within your world.  I used Sulani so I made a rule where my Sim had to have a high enough fitness level to “Scuba” to the other islands.  But this part is up to you.
You start out with ZERO money.  Since you can do a tiny lot trait you can use a single 4 tile platform, I did that and made it look like a washed up wooden pallet.  Your first “shack” must be made out of that original piece and can never be larger than 32 tiles because you are stranded and won’t have access to much building materials.
You can only have objects that your sim could have “made” to use, like a cooking pit for food, a place to “store” food, if you get your logic level up to 5 you can buy a generator to use to power things and if you get your handiness level to 5 you can buy appliances. But you can’t have appliances until you unlock and purchase a generator.  If you don’t have eco living you can just buy the appliances once you have both your handiness and logic level to 5 but you can not buy fancy stuff, it has to be the old stuff that breaks all the time.
You may fish and forage for food, and you can plant what you forage, but you can not purchase any seeds, you can only plant what you find.  If you choose to do the athletics feature of this challenge, once you max your athletic skill you can then travel to other worlds but any world you travel to HAS to be empty, you are just in another part of your current world so it will be deserted as well.  Remember this is a place where you are stranded.  Other sims can be walking around, but they can be the native tribe to that island, so if you want to, you can change the clothes for all the sims to reflect that if you like.  I took out some Sims in my game and limited the amount of people that can populate.  I also changed their clothes so they looked the part for a little added realism.
SURVIVOR EVENTS:
Well that pretty much just sums up the idea behind this whole Let’s Play, your Sims are competing for their very lives.  Each Sim must compete in a weekly Survivor Event.  Each even lasts for 24 hours.  The idea is to see if your Sim is smart enough to make it out alive.  This step will require a little imagination on your part because we are going to come up with clever challenges for your Sims to endure for 24 hours.  Survivor Events can be set up on the lot itself or you can dedicate one lot in your world to the toruture … err, that is the Survival FESTIVAL.. Yeah we’ll go with that.  Festival sounds so much nicer.  You can free build or use money cheats to make your “festival” area but your Sims are not allowed to access it other than when a “festival” is taking place.  I suggest enclosing it behind a fence and locking the gate if you decide to keep it on the lot your sim is living on, or you can just put in on another lot and not worry about the mental anguish your Sims will no doubtedly go through having to stare at their tortur.. err festival grounds while not in use.  Be creative with your builds and the crazier the better!  If you want to see how I set mine up or what my thoughts were for the events, you can check out the first episode of this challenge on my YouTube channel <3   Below are some ideas I thought of, but you can have whatever challenges you like, but they must be done every Friday, and you can only start your challenges when you have two or more Sims.  Also you will need regular players, so every Wednesday you will have a new Sim wash ashore.  There are a lot of good castaway sims on the gallery, or you can create your own.  The only cheat allowed here is to add them to your family.  If they have money you can’t keep it.  Sims that lose must leave the island, but since it is in the middle of nowhere the only way to leave is by death.  Since I used Sulani we will be sacrificing them to the Volcano Gods of the island to appease them… lol don’t judge me.  Or you can sacrifice them to the Cow Plant Gods.. really it’s only limited to your own imagination on this.
CHALLENGE ROOMS:
Sleep, Swim or Eat: In this room it should be one bench, one plate of food, and only 4 tiles in which the Sim can freely move around.  The rest has to be a pool.  You can place the pool in the middle and then put the various objects around the pool so the Sims have to swim to use the bench to sleep or get the plate of food to eat.  The food will probably go bad before your Sims eat it… but hey no one told them to swim while their food rots now did they?  I’m looking at you Bob Pancakes..
Cow Plant, It’s What’s For Dinner:  This room will obviously have a Cow Plant, if you need one I have a maxed out garden on my Origin Gallery SassySimMuffins You will not need any other objects in this room, but it must be large enough for the Cow Plant and for your Sim to interact with it.  You will have to play around with the MOO cheat (move objects on - pun intended) for this one. The idea is to leave your Sim alone with the Cow Plants and see which one if any get eaten. This challenge is best done when your Cow Plants and Sims are a little on the hungry side.  The winner is the one that didn’t eat the cake. In the event of a tie, you can make them race to a destination and the first one that gets there wins.
BEES..WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE BEES:  You probably guessed it already, but yeah this room has beehives in it.  You will need 3 boxes full of the little angry balls of death in each room, nothing more, just that.  If you want to make your bees not suffer you can give them a flower plant.  I mean we love bees right? #SaveTheMurderBalls.  The idea is that your Sim has to interact with each beehive 3 times every Sim hour.  There is no room for sleep here.  The winner will have the highest positive alignment with the bees.  Oh and you can totally send bees to attack the others if your sim wants a little edge up on the competition. This room is best built using a fence so the bees can interact with other Sims if you want so you should try and do this outside if you can.
Love to see what you guys do with this challenge, and if you do decide to try it, please tag me so I can go watch your video, or you can post your photos on my Twitter, I love to see what crazy ideas you guys come up with!  Remember to be good to each other and to love yourself, ✌️💜🧁

Sims 3 Tutorial:  Creating an Uncharted Island
The Sims 3: Island Paradise.
Tumblr media
Disclaimer:  I found this tutorial some time ago and can’t remember where I found it.  I have altered the text in many places and provided my own screenshots from Sunset Valley.
This simple tutorial shows how to create a hidden island in The Sims 3.  Isla Paradiso is the only premade world that features the hidden islands, one of the main features in Island Paradise.  There are 8 uncharted islands to unlock, and each of them has different ways to be unlocked. One problem of this feature is that the discovering the hidden islands is the main objective of Grand Explorer lifetime wish. Because hidden islands are only available in Isla Paradiso, there's no other way to fulfill this lifetime wish than to move to that world or to vacation in it.
Preparation
Requirements: 1.      Enable testingCheatsEnabled true 2.      Enable buyDebug on 3.      Uncharted Island Marker
Download Uncharted Island Marker override.   (requires Island Paradise)
The marker is hidden in the game by default, so you’ll need to download the override to find it in Buy > Debug >Misc Objects, or (for quicker access) Buy > Debug > Tomb Objects.  Unzip the file and place it in the Mods/Overrides folder.
A "hidden island" is a lot that has an Uncharted Island Marker and surrounded by dense fog to make the lot inaccessible or viewable.  Once the player unlocks a lot, the fog will fade, the marker will vanish, and the lot will immediately become a private residential lot, owned by the Sim who discovered it.
The Uncharted Island Marker is similar to the Tomb Room Marker from World Adventures, which is used to mark a room as a tomb.
Steps
First, set up a regular residential lot that the player intends to "hide".  It could be furnished or just an empty lot.  You can place a lot or use an existing residential lot.
Enable the testingCheatsEnabled true and buyDebug on cheats. Find the Uncharted Island Marker at the tomb or misc. section of buydebug. Place the marker anywhere on the lot.
Tumblr media
Ctrl+Shift+Click the marker, and it will show the options available.
Use the "Set Discovery Type" to set how the lot can be unlocked. There are 8 ways to unlock the islands. Choose one that best suits how to unlock it:
CayToCity:  Unlocked by rescuing 35 Sims as a Lifeguard.
ResortMogul:  Unlocked by owning a 5-star resort.
PlumbobIsland:  Unlocked by finding a PlumbBob map in a treasure chest or a message in a bottle.
LocalsRefuge:  Unlocked by completing an opportunity chain by asking the resort desk clerk for an adventure.
ExplorersReward:  Unlocked by swimming / going right to the island / lot.
TreasureHunt:  Unlocked by finding 4 pieces of map and reconstructing it into a full map.
ScubaSurprise:  Unlocked by exploring a certain underwater cave with level 10 Scuba Diving skill.
MermaidSecret:  Unlocked by befriending a townie mermaid.
It is important to consider how to unlock the islands, because not all features might be available in other worlds, unless the players have provided them.  For example, there's no way to unlock a hidden lot by using ResortMogul,  LocalsRefuge, ScubaSurprise, or MermaidSecret if the world doesn't have a resort or diving area.  Although the LocalsRefuge type starts at a resort, one of the steps in the chain requires fighting a shark, which requires a dive lot.
For map pieces, Seashell and Bottle Lander Spawners (common, uncommon and rare found under Debug > Rocks/Gems/Metal Spawners) can be placed on beach lots (or any lot for that matter).  IP Treasure Chest Land (Debug > Misc) can also be placed about the world.  The default treasure includes a map piece.  You can Ctrl+Shift+click the treasure chest in Buy Mode to change the treasure type.
Use the "Set Effect" to set the fog visual effect to hide the lot, like the ones in Isla Paradiso.  Use just one of the effects, and leave it be.  Don't repeat the selection more than once.
When the steps are done, the lot will fog over, and when viewed in the map view or edit town, the lot will not generate a map tag.  It means the lot is successfully hidden.
Tumblr media
Check if the lot is properly hidden.  If you’re certain that you’ve done the steps properly, there's no need to actually test it.  However, we can always double-check if the methods were done right.  In order to do this, (save your progress) make a Sim with the Grand Explorer lifetime wish and move them into the world. Open up the cheat console and enter discoverAllUnchartedIslands cheat.  If the lifetime wish is fulfilled, it means the lot is successfully hidden, ready to be discovered properly.

How to Spend One Year on a Working Holiday Visa in Australia
Almost nine million people visit Australia each year to scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef, trek to waterfalls in Kakadu National Park, visit the Sydney Opera House, surf in Byron Bay, find Chris Hemsworth and eat Vegemite (you’ll quickly learn that last one). There’s a demand to see these places, which means there is always a demand for work.
That’s where you come in.
Australia is one of the easiest countries to get a Working Holiday Visa, and it’s actually the most popular country out of the 62 in the world that offers these kinds of visas.
That’s largely why it attracts 333,000 prospective workers each year who travel to experience the country, make friends and save money along the way.
Prior to 2016, travelers on a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) or Work and Holiday Visa (W&HV) were only able to stay in Australia for a year. However, due to changes in legislation, travelers on a W&HV are now able to work and travel for two years—that’s a whole lot of time to experience Australia!
There are is a whole heap of things on your Australian bucket list to tick off so, this one-year itinerary for traveling in Australia on your Working Holiday Visa should serve you well.
4 Months Before Your Trip: Get Your Visa
Don’t put the cart before the horse and buy your flight first. What if your visa gets rejected? That is one expensive lesson!
Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia.
Identify the visa that you would like using the Australian Department of Home Affairs website. Depending on which country you are from you will be directed to either a 417 (Working Holiday Visa) or a 462 (Work and Holiday Visa). For example, the UK, Germany, Netherlands and many others get directed to the WHV, whereas the USA, Spain and Argentina can apply for the W&H Visa.
While there are tons of websites out there charging anywhere between $70 to $200 on top of visa fees to give you a visa, your best option is to apply directly through the Australian Government website (the website URL should always end in .gov.au).
The process is pretty simple, should only take around 30 minutes to an hour to complete and, whether you’re applying for a Working Holiday Visa or a Work and Holiday Visa, it will cost you $440 AUD.
These visas give you full working rights in Australia, with the only condition being that you cannot work for the same company for more than six months. It’s structured this way, so you work and travel. Not just both.
Note: You can only get these visas if you’re at least 18 and not yet 31 years old.
It can take anywhere between 24 hours and four weeks for your visa to be granted, so be organized and apply as early as you can. But once you have it, the clock starts ticking—you have 12 months to make your way to Australia. From your date of entry, you are then given one year to work and travel.
3 Months Before Your Trip: Decide Where You Want to Go and Book Your Flight
Once you have your visa (which can take anywhere between 24 hours and four weeks), you’ll want to buy your flights. But Australia is massive, which can induce some serious decision anxiety.
You’re coming over to Australia to work and travel, so you’re going to want a perfect combination of the two.
Well, Melbourne is the world’s most livable city with, beautiful beaches, unique laneway bars and cafes and really, really good nightlife. It’s a cultural melting pot and a foodies’ paradise, and the breathtaking street art makes it, in my humble opinion, the best place to start your travels.
Plus, there are great value-for-your-money flights to Melbourne from most major international airports, with a one-way ticket generally costing $450 USD.
Melbourne is literally the most livable city in the world!
I know many of you likely have Sydney on your mind as a place to start. Just keep in mind it’s going to be the most expensive choice with some serious competition. Because, really—did you think you’re the only backpacker to make Sydney your first choice?
News flash—you’re not, which means “backpacker jobs” will be slightly more difficult to get, especially if you don’t have experience. This isn’t to deter; it’s just some food for thought. Bring your A-game if you plan to find work in Sydney (and maybe a few extra thousand in the bank to tide you over).
Pro Tip: As with any flights, try to avoid the holidays as you will have to pay a premium to fly, and keep in mind that June through September is Australia’s winter (yes, we do have winters here in Australia), so flights are generally a bit cheaper then.
1 Month Before Your Trip: Save That Money and Plan an Epic Party
If it costs $200 just to walk across Sydney’s Harbour Bridge and a whopping $5 for a dozen eggs at the grocery store, just imagine how expensive Australia will be.
The good news is that Australia is known for paying well. But you’re going to want to have a few dollars stashed away before you go since you probably won’t be working as soon as you land.
Hanging Rock in the Blue Mountains, Australia.
Your biggest expense is going to be your accommodation. A week in a hostel in Australia is generally around $150 USD. In any standard week, you should anticipate spending anywhere between $300 to $800 USD, depending on activities, your dining and, most importantly, your drinking habits.
(Take my advice: If you drink in pubs the whole time, you will somehow spend a lot of money.)
Just take a look at this breakdown of the average costs of expenses in three major Australian cities. For more, check out Numbeo for a cost of living breakdown in other cities around Australia.
The Average Cost of Living in Sydney (in USD):
Hostel per night: $32
One-bedroom apartment per week: $329
Pint of beer: $5.50
Cheap restaurant meal: $11
A day trip to the Blue Mountains: $75
The Average Cost of Living in Melbourne:
Hostel per night: $25
One-bedroom apartment per week: $298
Pint of beer: $5.50
Cheap restaurant meal: $11
A day trip to the Great Ocean Road: $80
The Average Cost of Living in Cairns:
Hostel per night: $18
One-bedroom apartment for a week: $181
Pint of beer: $5.20
Cheap restaurant meal: $11
Day trip to the Great Barrier Reef: $145
I would recommend getting to a savings point of $5,200 USD before you go, and I’ll tell you why later.

Day 1-10: Get Set up, Meet People & Tick off That Bucket List
The plane touches down and you wake up from what was likely a very long flight, no matter where you came from. You rub your eyes and, suddenly, you’re in the coastal capital of the southeastern Australian state of Victoria!
Rugged rocks forms hug the bay beaches. The national parks are rife with wildlife. The center city is bustling with coffee fiends and shopping addicts and bar crawlers—vice or virtue, you decide. You’re finally here to pick your poison.
But before you dive right in, I would strongly advise giving yourself at least a week to get yourself set up. You’ll need to open a bank account, get a Tax File Number (this is essential if you want to work), and get your hands on a SIM card.
Traveling for the first time is daunting, and the reason why you started this adventure is to meet new people and to have life-changing experiences.
Noosa coastline
In Melbourne, you actually have the option to check off all the quintessential bucket list items for Australia, like petting a kangaroo or koala bear or learning to surf on some of the best surf beaches on earth.
You can also experience worldwide sporting events such as the Australia Grand Prix or the Australian Open, or go snowboarding or skiing just three hours away by car.
Plus, two popular day trips from Melbourne, include watching the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, when hundreds of penguins emerge from the surf to waddle back to their burrows for the night, and wine tasting in the Yarra Valley wine region.
Day 11-60: Venture Out to the Surrounding Areas
If you’ve taken my advice (and I hope you have) and landed in Melbourne, then I’ve spelled out your plan perfect for you.
Head west out of Melbourne and you have the Great Ocean Road, the most scenic drive in all of Australia and the number one road trip in Oz. It is the fourth most popular destination in Australia, and it’s an absolute must, especially if you’re in Melbourne. It’s about 150 miles of coastline-hugging, beach-kissing, rainforest-penetrating road with the most iconic part being the 12 Apostles.
A five-day road is perfect for this destination. This is especially true if you couple it up with a little-known destination called The Grampians. Then you can either loop back to Melbourne or keep heading west to Adelaide and the outback.
I would then recommend touching base back in Melbourne for a few days before heading in the next destination: east toward Sydney and Cairns. Every east coast trip is different, but you should travel for at least a month and preferably two to three if you want to experience it properly.
Overlooking the Sydney Harbour
The best way to travel the east coast of Australia is to take a hop-on-hop-off Greyhound bus the whole way there.
You could also find a group of other travelers to buy a used car together. You’ll find tons of cars for sale on sites like Gumtree (the Australian Craigslist) or Facebook groups like Backpacker Cars Australia.
If buying isn’t your thing, you can also rent campervans. You can get them from Jucy, Spaceships, Travel Wheels, Travellers AutoBarn, Hippie, Mighty and Wicked. There are plenty of different options depending on the level of luxury you want.
Likewise, if you visit hostels, check the bulletin boards for flyers advertising used cars for sale.
Months 2-8: Start the Job Hunt and Get to Work!
Just because you’re onto the job hunting stage doesn’t mean that the fun has to stop. After living on the road for weeks on end, you’ll probably crave some stability and structure. At least a little bit. And you’ll meet even more people while finally earning yourself some money!
Finding Work in Australia
When you’re done traveling, make sure you have enough money to last a month. You probably won’t find a job on day one of your hunt. That means you need to have enough savings to last you until you find work. Look at job websites like Job Search, Seek and Gumtree to find work in these specific fields.
Making friends and networking is a great way to find a job too!
But don’t spend all day on websites job hunting. Talk to people around your hostel, and ask the workers at the hostel for the best place to find work. In most major cities, there is a specific area where there are always people recruiting in hospitality. So print out that resume and enjoy the day going into as many places as possible asking if they’re looking for any workers.
These areas are your hospitality hotspots, which are full of bars, restaurants and cafes.
Sydney: Kings Cross, Bondi and Oxford Street
Melbourne: St Kilda, Chapel Street and Lygon Street
Brisbane: Fortitude Valley
Cairns: Everywhere
Darwin: Mitchell Street
Adelaide: Glenelg and the CBD
Perth: Northbridge
It is sometimes harder to find employment if you have a specific field you want to work in because most employers believe that working holiday visa makers can only be part of their company for six months, which is generally true.
What to Expect While Working in Australia
The minimum wage is $18.93 AUD in Australia, and most casual positions in hospitality and tourism pay around $20 AUD.
The type of work ranges from being a waiter up to being a skydive instructor—you can view the jobs available to travelers on Working Holiday Visas on the Home Affairs website here, but do bear in mind the work has to be above the Tropic of Capricorn and in certain postcodes.
Your new bffs?
Some aspects of the Australian work culture may also surprise foreigners. Understand these cultural differences:
There’s a lot of casual conversation.
Swearing in the workplace is to be expected.
There will be a lot of happy hours.
Australians are super laidback and uphold a “no-fuss” attitude, which can be jarring in stressful situations.
Office romances are a thing, and they’re not quite as taboo.
Most offices have flat organizational structures, without much hierarchy if any at all.
National workplace safety laws, “Occupational Health and Safety” or “OH&S” are taken very seriously.
Australians use a lot of blunt humor, even in the workplace.
Australians embrace a work-hard-play-hard culture.
The standard working week in Australia is 38 hours per week (7.6 hours per day). They value their time outside of work.
Month 9-12: Keep Traveling
You’ve been working for a few months—that’s a serious high five moment! Take a break. Go on a trip. Let loose a little. You deserve it!
Generally, people’s second journey within Australia is the outback. That may mean the wetland of Kakadu near Darwin. There, you’ll see some of the most jaw-dropping waterfalls and the highest concentration of salt-water crocodiles. I recommend a tour there for at least three days.
Entering Kata Tjuta in the outback of Australia
You can couple this up with the third most popular destination in Australia, the Red Centre. With the cultural history surrounding this area, the iconic sunset at Uluru and nights underneath millions of stars, this is another bucket-list item to tick. To get to this destination you can fly into Alice Springs or Yulara airport.
Alternatively, you can go overland from Darwin or Adelaide for a true outback adventure.
From here you can fly to the place you fell in love with.
Maybe you felt like Byron Bay had a spiritual calling for you. Or you realized that the busyness of Sydney was actually your “cup of tea.” Maybe you’ve been dying to get back to Cairns. Or maybe the world’s best coffee is pulling you back to Melbourne.
Want to Spend a Second Year in Australia?
So many people fall in love with the Australian way of life, so it’s not a surprise that thousands of WHV and W&H Visa workers choose to extend their visas for another year.
View from above—Australia, Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise
The Australian Government created an initiative for understaffed industries. This is for people who want to travel and work in Australia for extended periods of time. And the second year working holiday extension allows WHV and W&H Visa holders to extend their initial one-year visa to two if they work 88 days in one of those specific sectors:
Plant and Animal Cultivation
Fishing and Pearling
Tree Farming and Felling
Mining
Construction
At the end of your initial employment, your manager will have to sign off on Form 1263. This includes their ABN (Australian Business Number) to ensure that you have completed the work. Then you will apply for your second-year visa through the same website that you got your first one.
Tip: If you’re on a W&HV (USA I’m talking to you) you can extend your stay by working in hospitality and tourism, as long as these jobs are in Northern Australia. This work ranges from waiting tables to being a skydiving instructor—you can view the jobs for travelers on Working Holiday Visas on the Home Affairs website here.
This all said, you might want to head home or travel in between your first and second year. It’s up to you when you decide to use your second-year visa. Just make sure you use it before you’re 31 or you’ll lose eligibility.
Whatever you do, just remember that you’re going to Australia to work and travel. You left that all-work-and-no-play lifestyle behind at home.
Well, unless you’re this dude, that is.
So now the only question is, what’s the first adventure before you start working in Australia? Let us know in the comments!
