Some of my favorite moments from the rare occasions my beloveds joined my on my (largely solo) watch of The Mentalist season 1.

#1

Me *describing Jane to my partner*: "He used to pretend to be a psychic and now he solves crimes by being very good at cold readings, and making a lot of pretty accurate predictions and snap judgements. I guess... well, he's kind of like you if you were less concerned with being kind and you had a cis white man's confidence. And I'm glad you don't because he gets punched a lot."

My partner *watching an episode*: "Ooooh he is like me, I see it."

My partner *later that same episode*: "I should have this man's confidence. I feel like I'd be unstoppable"

Me: "I cannot stress enough how often he gets punched in the nose."

My partner *pointing at Jane and Lisbon*: "They're fucking by this point, right?"

Me: "Oh no, this is season 1, they don't even kiss until season 6. All the flirting is very innocent"

*The very next episode*

Jane to Lisbon: "You a little grumpy because daddy didn't buy you a pony?"

My Parnter: "In the workplace?!"

Me *mouth agape*: "I guess I stand corrected about the flirting being innocent"

Okay but for real, the season finale for the first season is something else, just in terms of Jane’s actions. He gets all upset with Lisbon about their plan and being led to Red John and Jane has so little regard of his own life. Even when Maya is mentioned, he just. All he wants is Red John. If he can’t have a go at him, he needs Lisbon to get him, even if it means his own death.

This guy is practically allergic to guns most of the time. But the moment this guy makes a move - as obsessed with Red John as Jane is - Jane shoots him in defense of Lisbon. Like he doesn’t even think, he just picks the gun up and does it. And then his hand kinda shakes and he drops it immediately.

Say what you will about the first season of The Mentalist, it’s more episodic nature and Jane’s behavior etc., but the dude cared about Lisbon from the get-go more than he probably gets credit for. And I appreciate that.

#ngl I find it hilarious when one partner in these types of shows are just kinda allergic to guns #it makes it more profound when they use them in the defense of those they care about #more often than not it’s not that they can’t use them #it’s that they make the choice not to #but when it comes down to the wire and they have to choose #they’ll choose their loved one every time #just doing a mentalist rewatch and Jane going back and forth between defense of Lisbon/doing the right thing #and his obsession with going after Red John #is fascinating #the mentalist #Patrick Jane #Teresa Lisbon #red John

The Mentalist Season 1 Finale

So, I'm not invested in the "who is Red John" mystery because the show has already aired and I know how bad they beefed it. There was no plan. That's fine, that's episodic TV for you. So the only thing that matters to me about the case is what it means for our lead characters.

Jane wants revenge. He's willing to die for it. On some level he thinks he deserves to die in the pursuit of it. He's so angry with Lisbon for saving him at the cost of (potentially) luring out Red John.

And Lisbon whose history with self destructive men is... shall we say potent, is livid at him for even implying that she should have let him die. (Objectively she shouldn't. There was no guarantee Red John would have shown).

She assures him that they have the accomplice in custody and he'll talk. He's their best chance of catching the big bad.

Then the accomplice escapes his restraints and points a gun at Lisbon and Jane, who hardly ever handles weapons, shoots him. He kills his only lead in the case that is his sole purpose. Without hesitation and without regret.

It's just.... you know that post that's like 'I would kill for you' 'I would die for you' Ok but would you live for me? Would you rest for me? Would you take care of yourself for me?" I mean that's it that's the heart of the show.
