Dinner and a Confession
PARING: Jibson (Patrick Jane / Teresa Lisbon)
GENRE: Angst (but not really?)
WARNINGS: pre-smut that may be a little bit more than “pre” but not explicit
WORD COUNT: 6019
SUMMERY: Jane and Lisbon have a fwb relationship before he leaves for Venezuela and he wants something more when he gets back, he just cannot make up his mind when he should tell her. When he gets the courage to, she is about to go on a date with someone else. Jane has to tell her before it's too late. or Jane tells his feelings to Lisbon at the hotel at dinner,
(Not really) Based off of the lyrics in VOWELS by HUNNY, but I wouldn't call it a songfic: "You can't spell pain, kiss, run away, or little mistake without me."
TAGS: Au, fw/b (kinda) / unrequited love. Angst, pre-smut, vega lives, some cannon but ehh, Dog Libson, jane actually tells lisbon at the hotel, not on the plane, kinda wrote in a past tense point of view. Mostly lisbons pov, but a little jane (third person)
[READ ON AO3]
When Jane first walked into the CBI building the thing Libson immediately noticed was he was a broken shell of a man, dead behind the eyes, and she wasn’t sure how he kept himself upright. There were some days where Libson could see a little sparkle in his eyes, like when he solved a case in a record time. That sparkle would make Libson’s heart skip a beat every time, she told herself it was only from the stress and relief of the case they worked.
The day he got her a pony as a gift, she kissed his cheek as a thank you although she doesn’t know why she did. The next day, in her office, they had an argument over something small that didn’t actually matter. Lisbon was about to tell Jane to leave her office, he must have known because he took a step forward, standing so close they were breathing in the same air. Jane put his hands on her arms asking “Why are we fighting, Lisbon?”
Suddenly they were kissing, neither one knowing who initiated it, with Lisbon walking Jane backward putting him between herself and the wall. Once it got to be too much to breathe they broke away. “Do you want to go try the new sandwich down the road? It’s been a long day and we both could eat.” Jane smiled.
“You’re still not going to seduce me over a meal, certainly not a sub sandwich.” Lisbon chuckled.
“I just want to get something to eat!” Jane put his hands up.
“Fine but I’m driving” Lisbon said while grabbing her jacket that was sitting on her chair.
“Yes mom.” Jane joked, opening the door for her, following her shortly after she walked through the door.
Lisbon smiled, happy to eat something, but also to hang out with Jane.
-
When Jane returned from Vegas, Lisbon was mad at him for leaving, and sad that he left her. In the interrogation room when Lorelei Martins told her that Jane and her were lovers, Lisbon saw red and green. She asked more questions but Jane kissed Lorelei's head and Lisbon was done with any more questions she may or may not have. Lisbon marched straight up the stairs after letting the guard know she was done with the interrogation now. She did the cop knock on Jane’s door, which he opened immediately, like he was expecting her.
“Lovers? Jane…” Lisbon started poking his chest to shove him into the room letting herself in, closing the door behind her.
“I had to let Red John think I moved on, and had a breakdown. It’s all part of the plan.” Jane explained.
“Was this the first since, you know…” she trailed off, “you know what, I don’t want to know.”
“Lisbon, I-” he was cut off by a pair of lips, her lips, touching his.
“Did it mean anything?” She asked, pulling back.
“No, of course not. Honestly, I was filled with regret instantly.” Jane breathed.
“Good.” Lisbon smirked, pulling him into a kiss pushing him onto his make-shift padded board bed. She climbed on top of him, removing his shirt in one move. She had a goal to show him how much she missed him, and wanted to erase his time with Lorelei from that mind palace of his. When they both had finished Jane was not thinking of Lorelei any more.
-
Red John wanted Jane to prove his loyalty to him by killing Lisbon, and bringing her head to him. Jane knew that Red John was trying to hurt Jane more, and Jane wasn’t going to let Red John hurt anyone he cared for again.
“Lisbon, I have to tell you something and you are not going to like it.” Jane stopped Lisbon from leaving her office. “I’m going to have to “kill” you.” Jane said while doing air quotes.
“Jane, what the hell is that supposed to mean?” Lisbon stopped, shocked he just said that in a building full of cops.
“Well you know how I have been trying to get on Red John’s good side, trick him into thinking I have turned onto his side? Well he requested that I kill you and to prove it, bring your head to him in a box. I don’t want to kill you though, but I have a plan. I already told Rigsby and he said he’s in.” Jane prefaced.
“Well tell me, you know I want to catch this guy too. What can I do to help?” Lisbon let him more into her office.
“So I’m going to “kill” Rigsby, and it’s going to be that unknown body from the case we are working on. I’m going to “kill” you, carry your “dead” body out and meet Rigsby at the safe area I got from a guy who owes me too much money from poker that he’ll never give me. I’ll  put some fruit in a box and say it’s your head, hopefully by the time they notice it’s fruit, I’ll know who Red John is.” Jane explained.
“Okay, this could work.” Lisbon smiled.
Jane smiled as he saw Rigsby pulling the corpse into place. “I hope so. I love you, good luck.” Jane said before he shot the blank gun in her direction, grabbing her acting dead and running out of the building.
Later Lisbon asked Jane what he meant about what he said, his only response was he was too hyped up and didn’t remember what he said. The plan ended up failing when the FBI thought that Jane was Red John and intercepted the mission.
-
When Jane started locking himself into the attic space refusing to speak to anyone, narrowing down his personal list of who was actually the man who killed his family, he had the dead look in his eyes, but the spark was still there.
Lisbon noticed the dull look in his eyes was much deeper, when he started locking himself in his attic space, and helping with their cases. He had a mission, seven men who could be the man that took his wife and child from his life. The same man who put Lisbon in his life- but Jane can’t let Red John know this.
The office was empty after everyone had gone home, and she should too. However, she made her way up to the stairs to the roof. Lisbon knocked on the door to the attic, softly at first, Jane ignored the knock but knew by the foot fall pattern it was her.
“Jane, please? I need you.” Lisbon sighed after waiting a minute.
Jane opened the door, “Miss me already Lisbon?” he smirked, closing the door behind her.
“I need your help with a case jackass.” She smacked his chest.
“Okay, but only because you asked so nicely.” Jane smiled.
She showed Jane the case files, he saw something right away that they missed, she went to give him a kiss on the cheek as a thank you, but he grabbed her shoulders, and turned his head to make sure their lips met. Maybe it was the spark of him being so close to catching Red John, the anger she felt against him, or maybe they just missed each other but they showed each other that night how much they missed each other. Over the following weeks, it wasn’t unusual for the two of them to share that padded-foam bed a couple of days out of the week, before she left to go home.
-
But the day he caught and killed Thomas McAllister, Jane was so happy to finally have accomplished his task, he didn’t care what the consequences were. So he ran, but not before leaving a voicemail to Lisbon, thanking her for dealing with him for as long as she did, and ending the message with a “see you later”. He threw that phone in the trash can before walking away from Thomas McAllister’s dead body.
The next year and a half was full of many emotions for Lisbon. She felt hurt and embarrassed with herself for thinking that whatever they had would convince him to make sure she was a part of his plans. Maybe he was going to actually bring her a gift instead of leaving her abandoned on that beach. That he wouldn’t go off and kill Red John when she specifically asked him to make sure she was there. She wanted to be there for Jane, it wasn’t going to be easy for him, and she did agree that Red John had to die, he would escape prison no matter what they did, and he does not deserve freedom. But mostly Libson was slowly realizing that she was starting to love Jane despite all his flaws, and she just wanted to be with him.
The first week she was under constant supervision from the FBI, barely able to get them away from her for long enough for her to use the restroom. When she was home, she closed the blinds so the guard wouldn’t see her crying. She cried for what felt like a week straight, her dog Charlie laying next to her, nuzzling his head into her shoulder to show affection to her in her time of need. Lisbon did get mad, she broke some mugs against the wall, and she would hit her balled up fists onto her thighs and a table occasionally.
When the FBI finally wasn’t watching her every move and she was offered a job in small town Canyon Ridge, she took it, trying to forget him by keeping busy. Canyon Ridge did anything but keep her busy, she had so much time to think, she was miserable there, but at least she had a job. After a partially boring day she came home and grabbed the mail from the small pile on the floor by the front door and saw a plain white envelope with a capital letter ‘L’ on the front. She sat down on the couch and set the rest of the mail on the coffee table in front of her. She opened the envelope and skimmed through the letter fast, stopping at the ‘Love, U no hoo’, at the bottom of the page. She silently gasped and read the letter again and again until she had every word memorized and then read it once more. She had tears staining her face that night when she went to sleep. She knew whatever they had wasn’t real to him and seemed to just be a big mistake. As the weeks went by she got more and more letters from him, sometimes there was a small seashell with the letter, or some sand (she doesn’t think that was on purpose). She didn’t care what status they would have, but she just wanted to hear his voice, she thinks it has been long enough and she would like to see him.
-
When she got a phone call from Agent Abbott with the FBI, she was worried something bad had happened, and when he told her to pack a bag for a few days and come to Austin, she was even more worried. She sat in the nice interrogation room for a while waiting for who she thought would be Abbott, but instead saw Jane walking in the doors, her face fell. He was tan, toned, and had a look on his face that made her both want to punch him and hug him. Instead she settled on saying “Nice beard….”.
Jane  looked at her for a few seconds and pulled her into a big hug, “God. You have no idea how much I missed you Teresa.” He said still holding her for too long to be just friends, both of them forgetting they were standing in the FBI HQ.
“How did they get you to come back?” Lisbon asked, curiously.
“I told them I wanted to work with you again, but I just mostly just see you again.” Jane smiled, reaching towards her hands but not touching. “Jane I have a life built somewhere else, I live and work in Washington now.” Lisbon said with a little too much anger behind it.
“Oh?” Jane started, “Well work this one case with me, if you don’t like it, you don’t have to stay. You can go back to your home, but you should come visit me in jail sometime.”
“Jail?” Lisbon asked, “Aren’t you going to be working here?”
“Not if you leave. We are partners, I don’t want to work with anyone else. I would rather be in jail for the rest of my life.” Jane took his hands off the table, clear she wasn’t going to take his hands.
Lisbon looked at him, studying his face, it was clear he was not the same man he was two years ago, but she wasn’t the same woman she was two years ago either. “I hope you don’t mean that. The going to jail part I mean.” she said almost too quietly.
“I do mean that.” Jane shrugged. “We should probably go find Agent Abbott for details about the case.” he stated while standing up, opening the door and holding it for her.
- They solved the first case in record time, like always. It only took one of those Jane smiles and a “Please, Lisbon?” and she decided she didn’t make much of a life in Washington anyways. She wasn’t sure when it happened, but he definitely was breaking boundaries on more than just the cases they were working, but also in their friendship. He would stand closer to her and practically sit on her lap when on the couch, not that she minded anyways.
They had a minor argument over how far Jane could go to solve a case, and they ended up standing toe to toe,  and they both knew what would happen next if they were back at the CBI. Jane cleared his throat, took a step back, and apologized and told her she was right, if he wanted her to know he was serious, it was time he acted like it. He walked away, Lisbon was confused, and Wylie and Vega turned to each other with many questions, but they would not voice them out loud.
On many occasions Jane was ready to tell her what his true feelings were, but something always had to happen where he just could not. One day he decided he was just going to say it no matter what. She was just coming back from the breakroom going to her desk, grabbing her jacket off of her chair.
“Lisbon! Hi, are you leaving? Do you want me to walk you to your car?” Jane asked, jumping up from the couch behind her desk.
Lisbon smiled, “Actually it’s-”
“Hey Lisbon, I’m going to go warm up the car, I’llI wait in the parking lot for you.” She was interrupted.
“Okay thank you Pike.” Lisbon smiled.
Jane’s smile dropped but he joked, “What’s going on between you two?”
“Pike asked me if I wanted to go get some pizza tonight, and I thought why not?” Lisbon kept looking at the elevator to not meet Jane’s eyes.
“The prick in the art theft department?” Jane shot.
“You don’t even know him.”
“Well neither do you.”
“And I’m trying to change that.” Lisbon said matter of factly already walking away to the elevator to bring her outside.
“Okay, just be safe. Text me if you need anything.” Jane sighed and sat back down on the couch. Well maybe not tonight, he thought, her happiness is more important, and she probably doesn’t feel the same way.
The next day Lisbon came in ten minutes late, and Jane stood at a respectable distance from her, and didn’t sit on the couch with her. Lisbon noticed he had that dull look again in his eyes, not like when he first walked into the CBI all those years ago, but close. Was he mad at her? Or just respecting her now that she is dating someone else?
-
Months went by with Jane ignoring her, and Pike and her becoming more serious. There was a case at a wedding venue that overlooked the Colorado River, which was very beautiful.
“Isn’t this such a nice view? I think getting married in front of a nice river or lake would be a nice experience.” Jane spoke, uttering the most words she’s heard from him in a sitting since that night of her first date with PIke.
“Hmm, yeah it would be nice.” Lisbon said, while her mind pictured Jane in a tuxedo in front of an altar with the river flowing nicely in the background of her mental image. She shook her head, trying to picture Pike instead, but it wasn’t working.
“Are you and Pike getting married soon? Or has he proposed yet?” Jane inquired, causing Lisbon to choke on air.
“Jane! I have been with him for six months! Are you crazy?” she asked, trying to regain her breath.
“I don’t know Lisbon. If I was dating you, I would have proposed after only a couple of months.” He shrugged, looking into her eyes trying to see if her eyes said what she was thinking. “You are a queen Lisbon, and I think you should be treated as one. You can call me crazy if you want, but if he hasn’t figured out that he is the lucky one, and if he doesn’t get you, someone else will.” With that Jane walked away smirking, like he knew what he put in her head.
Lisbon stood on her spot for a few minutes longer, shocked. She sent Pike a picture of the river in front of her asking him what if he thought it was beautiful.
His reply was almost instant, causing her to smile, ‘I wouldn’t eat any fish from there if I were you’ she read, her smile falling just as fast as it took for her to read the text. She put her phone back in her pocket walking back to where the rest of the crew was examining the body.
The next day Pike and Lisbon are eating dinner and he tells her he got a job offer in Washington D.C., and asks her if she wants to come with him. Lisbon smiles, but Pike lets her know she doesn’t have to make the decision now. When she gets home she takes her phone out, thumbing the screen as if she should call Jane or not, she looks at the clock, a little after 10, she knew he wasn’t asleep, but common courtesy says to not do that. The following day she gets to the office a little earlier than she has been coming in, noticing Jane laying on the couch, she walks up to him.
“Jane.” she whispered, gently setting  her hand on his shoulder.
“Good morning Lisbon.” He said without opening his eyes.
“Can we talk real quick? It’s about Pike.” Lisbon asked in a normal volume voice.
“Are you okay? Did he hurt you?” He sat up fast, her hand coming off his shoulder, looking her up and down.
“No, no. Nothing like that.” She said, noticing Jane relaxing when she said that. “Last night he told me he got a job offer in Washington D.C.”
“Good for him! But why are you telling me this?” Jane questioned.
“Well regardless of what has been going on, you’re still my best friend and I wanted you to hear it from me first. Pike asked me to move with him.” She looked him directly in the eyes.
“Oh… I see… You’re my best friend too Lisbon, and I think you should do what makes you happy.” He smiled with sadness in his eyes.
That is not what she wanted to hear.
-
Jane is noticeably upset, but if she was going to leave halfway across the county, he would tell her his feelings first. Was it cruel to wait until she had her house packed up, movers scheduled, and job arrangements made, maybe, but Jane didn’t care. One insomniac night at the FBI he was going through cold cases and found one that he just might be able to help close, and use to his advantage.
They are at a hotel in Florida, just Lisbon in Jane needed for some questioning and Abbott and Cho were expected before midnight that night due to another case that needed last minute assistance.
After Jane and Lisbon talked to four of the suspects, Jane knew who did it, but where is the fun in telling anyone now; plus he could use help with Cho and Abbott later that night. He had also reserved a table for him and Lisbon at the hotel lobby restaurant that he did not give her the choice to refuse, winking at her to wear something nice.
The two of them walked up to their conjoining rooms, Lisbon telling Jane she would see him later as she walked into her room. As soon as she shut the door she just wanted to land on her bed and take a nap, but there are three dresses lying on the bed stopping her from doing so. This has Jane written all over it, she thinks reaching towards the phone to tell him this is too much. She stops dialing on the phone when she hears a knock on the door. She walks to her door and answers it, seeing Jane there, letting him in the room, shutting but not locking the door behind her.
“Hi Lisbon. Have you decided what you are going to wear tonight?” He asked sheepishly.
“Jane, what is this?” she dodged his question.
“What is what?” He looked around.
“This.” She said vaguely gesturing around the room.
“A hotel room?” He asked.
“Jane.” She cuts him off..
“I thought you might want to dress nicely tonight for… our dinner. I guessed that you just brought work attire and some pajamas” Jane starts to explain.
“Okay. But for what reason? Why would I want to dress nicely for our dinner tonight? We are just getting a quick meal and hanging out before I leave for Washington D.C. Or am I mistaken, and caught up in one of your schemes now?” She sighs, already over this conversation. .
“I just want to spend time with my best friend and partner before she leaves half way across the country.” Jane hesitates, running his hands through his hair nervously. Lisbon has to fight herself to not grab his hand.
“But why?” she points to the dresses laying on the bed.
“Because I meant what I said.” Jane starts, “That you should be treated like a queen. That while it is killing me inside, if moving with Pike makes you happy, then that’s what matters.” He takes a deep breath in before finishing, “And I remember what I said before I fake shot you in your office, after I returned from Vegas, and I meant it, it just wasn’t the right time.”
Lisbon shifts her gaze away, just wanting to look anywhere but at him, she is sure that he would be able to see all of the too many emotions going on in her head.
“However, now I am choosing to be selfish for the night.” Jane states, “I would like to spend some time with my best friend before she leaves to the rest of her happiness.”
Lisbon reaches her hand up and moves Janes’ disheveled hair back into place as much as his hair allowed, barely noticing Jane leaning into her hand. After a few seconds she balls up her fist and lays it on his shoulder before sighing and telling him, “I hate you so much right now.” and dropping her fists to her side. Jane could not hide the look of shock and dismay on his face if he tried. “I already accepted a marriage proposal from my boyfriend, who is a really good guy.”
“But, you don’t love him…” Jane stated matter of factly.
“But he loves me, and he has promised me a future. What can you offer me? Lies that I have to accept if I want to be happy?” Lisbon finally meets Jane's gaze again.
‘Okay, that hurt.’ Jane thought before his thought was interrupted.
“And you know what’s even worse? I don’t even care if you lie to me, because I want to believe you and trust you, even if it hurts me in the end. The worst part of all of this, is that I don’t know if you’re telling me the truth but I do know I need to call Marcus and tell him it’s over and I need to cancel the movers. Damn it Jane!” Lisbon ranted before starting to turn away.
Jane reaches to lightly touch her forearms to catch her from turning away, “I told you I would not lie to you anymore, Teresa.”
Lisbon faces Jane again, not moving her arm, relishing in his touch, whispering, “I want to believe you Patrick.”
“Do what you have to do.” Jane smiles, “But know that the invitation is to open to dinner tonight if you want to talk more. I have a quick errand to run.” He squeezes her arm lightly before walking out of her hotel room and shutting the door behind him.
Lisbon watches the door shut, then looks at the dresses on the bed, but eyeing the pink one the most, before she notices her cell phone on the bedside table.
Later that evening, Jane is sitting at the table in the middle of the restaurant lobby when he sees Lisbon walk down the stairs in the pink dress but turns to talk to the hostess. After a minute she turns back around and Jane stands up smiling. When Lisbon is closer to the table Jane pulls out presumably her chair for her and does not hesitate to tell her, “You look like a princess, Teresa.”
Jane moves to where he was seated prior to standing up, seeing Lisbon blush while telling him to shut up.
“So what made you choose the pink dress? I had a feeling it was secretly your favorite color.” Jane asked, still smiling, glad Lisbon did decide to join him for dinner.
“Jane.” Lisbon decided to just get on with the unavoidable, “I called Pike after you left.”
“Oh.” Janes’ smile dropped.
“Yeah, I let him know it’s over. He asked me if I finally figured out my feelings for you. He even told me he wasn’t shocked.” Lisbon took a sip of the water on the table.
“And what are your feelings for me?” Jane asked, his eyes widening slightly with curiosity.
“Like you don’t know.” Lisbon stated.
“Tell me anyway.” Jane retorted.
“Well… Right now, I’m annoyed and upset with you for coming up with the elaborate scheme. Faking a threat to the FBI, Jane? Really?” Lisbon makes eye contact while asking. “Yeah, I asked the hostess about the towels in the room and she said that it was already included in the package that you paid for weeks ago.”
“Lisbon-”
“No. I am also sad that I may have ruined my only chance and the future kid me wanted. But I am also scared that I ruined it for a man that continues to lie to me.” Lisbon sighed.
“I didn’t lie to you. I told you that I would not lie to you anymore.” Jane remarked.
“See, you keep saying that,” Lisbon said angrily but quietly so as to not disturb the people around them, “ But what about this? Lying to the FBI?”
“I didn’t lie to you Lisbon, if you would have asked me if this was a scheme I would have said only a little. I know who did it. But, I also didn’t say I wouldn’t lie to anyone.” Jane said, starting to look over the menu, seeing the range of emotions between anger of being played, care of being told she was special to him, and shocked that he solved a cold case in a couple of days. “Would you like to get anything to drink?”
“I want to throw a drink in your face and never speak to you again,” Lisbon smirks, “but a whiskey to drink may be better.”
“I like the sound of that.”Jane smiles at her, seeing the waiter walk their way to take their drink order. They go ahead and order a few of the appetizers to share between the two of them. After eating a couple of bites of the appetizers they got Jane looks at Lisbon and says, “I’m sorry if I ruined your weekend- and your future.”
Lisbon looks at him for several moments, “I don’t think you did. You were right. I didn’t love Pike. I think I was in love with the idea of having the future I thought I wanted. I’m not sure what my or our future will be but-” Lisbon notices for the first time that Jane is not wearing his wedding ring.
Jane notices her gaze and chuckles, “It wouldn’t be fair to you if I kept it on. I hope you know I am serious about you. I’m not sure I can promise you what he was promising you, but I can promise you that I will love you and tell you only the truth until you decide you don’t want to put up with me anymore.” Jane stands up walking past Lisbon letting his fingers trail on her shoulders as he passes, leaving her with just her thoughts. Does she love Jane, does she want that future with him? Or does she just like the idea of what she could have with him? Jane comes back a few minutes later after paying the bill and sits back in his spot.
“Jane, I-” Lisbon breaks her own silence.
“You don’t have to say it Lisbon, I wanted years to tell you, I can wait for you to be ready to tell me. May I walk you to your room?” Jane stands back up extending his hand out to her, which Lisbon immediately grabs his hand and threads their fingers together. They make their way back up the stairs, swinging their arms slightly until they reach the door to her room, releasing his hand with a sigh as she unlocks the door. The door to the room stays open for a moment before Lisbon turns around, smiling “Do you want to come in?”
“On the first date Teresa?” Jane replies coily.
“Good night Patrick.” Lisbon rolls her eyes and enters her room, feeling him grip her wrist with just enough force that if she kept walking her wrist would fall, which causes her to smile a little.
“Good night Teresa.” Jane kisses her cheek before turning around and heading next door to his room.
Lisbon finally shuts the door after seeing Jane walk into his room, leaning against the inside of her door bringing her hand up to her cheek where he kissed her, feeling like she was on cloud 9. She shakes her head after a moment, and starts taking off her dress before jumping into the shower to clean the day away, before changing into pajama pants and a tank top. Just as she was going to climb into bed she hears a door shutting nearby, curiosity had her get up and look through the peephole in her door to see Jane leaving. Lisbon unlocks her door and opens it quickly, loudly whispering, “Jane!” causing him to stop and turn around like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
“Hi Lisbon” Jane answers sheepishly, adjusting his vest.
“What are you doing?” Lisbon questions.
“Well catching a killer of course!” Jane exclaims.
“I’m coming with you.” Lisbon says as she grabs a jacket and meets up with him
After meeting Cho and Abbott at the meeting spot, getting a confession from the killer, and having Cho and Abbott take them back to FBI HQ for processing, Jane and Lisbon go to the nearby 7-11 for case-closed ice cream between the two of them. They are going over details of the case to put on file, quickly turning to jokes and just two friends having a good time with one another. Once back upstairs in the hotel, they both walk into Lisbon’s room without thinking about it, Lisbon shedding her jacket while Jane takes a seat in the chair adjacent to the bed. Lisbon walks over to the bed after grabbing two plastic spoons from the mini bar. “Come here.” Lisbon pats the bed looking at Jane, “You won’t be able to eat ice cream over there.” Jane hesitates slightly before getting up and sitting next to her, leaving an unusual amount of space for the two of them. “I don’t bite Jane.” she says, closing the gap between the two of them, handing him a spoon before opening the pint of ice cream.
“From what I remember, you do bite.” Jane smirked, causing Lisbon to playfully slap his chest but with a smile on her face. “Does that mean you still do?” Jane cocked an eyebrow while looking her in the eyes, licking the ice cream clean off the spoon.
Lisbon doesn’t know if it was the day she had or the way Jane wasn’t breaking contact while working his tongue on the spoon, but she could feel herself melting like a ball of wax in the middle of a Texas summer. Lisbon cups Janes’ face in her hands and nibbles slightly on his lower lip for a few seconds, “You had some ice cream on your lips.” Lisbon smiled.
Jane wanted only one thing more than staying in that room, in her bed all night, and that was not ruining everything with Lisbon that he has been trying to fix since he came back from Venezuela. Jane stood up, throwing away the now empty ice cream container and spoons, seeing the alarm clock on the bedside table lighting up with 1:30 AM. “I think I should leave you to sleep now, goodnight Lisbon.”
“Wait, Jane, please.” Lisbon stood up, striding over to Jane pulling him into a hug, resting her head on his shoulder, “Thank you for tonight.”
Jane returned the hug still holding her, “No, thank you, for tonight. How about we get breakfast in the morning and talk a little bit more about… us?” Jane started to pull away but was stopped by Lisbon pulling him into another kiss. Jane held her again while returning the kiss with as much feeling as he could put into the kiss; eventually the need for air won and they pulled apart their foreheads resting together, smiling.
“Patrick Jane. Would you be my boyfriend?” Lisbon asked, not moving.
“Sounds a bit juvenile.” Jane cheekily replied before getting serious again, “Teresa Lisbon, I would love to be your boyfriend.” He barely got out before he was pulled into another kiss, this time he walked her backwards until the back of her legs touched the bed and they fell together on it.Jane worked his hands underneath her shirt, touching her back with his bare hands making Lisbon push herself closer to Jane wrapping her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist.
Lisbon wouldn’t say that night they made love per se, but it was much better than the angry sex they had on his make shift bed at the CBI. They fell asleep together, Jane finally getting some real sleep for the first time in a long time. In the morning they did get breakfast while Jane checked out of his room and extended their stay in her room. When they got back to her room, he made a second meal for himself between her thighs. The rest of the weekend they spent just enjoying each other, not worrying about what they would need to do when they had to return back to the world that consisted of FBI cases and having to pretend they were anything less than what they were.
~
AUTHORS NOTE: So in the CBI days, Lisbon had pictures of a dog on her desk so I included her to have a dog. also it's been like five years since I have wrote fan fic so please be easy on me, but if you notice any mistakes let me know and I will try to fix them! Also I have never been good with titles, hahah.

watching you live blog the mentalist is giving me so much joy. it’s such a good show and highly underrated. jane and libson’s friendship is so well-written and fulfilling
god im so glad- this show has stolen my heart very quickly and intensely and i literally need to get it out. it’s so cohesive and emotionally driven for a procedural show. their friendship is overflowing with hardship, affection, banter, tough love, care, and admiration. it is not at all the show i thought it would be and honestly it is already probably in my top ten for only being on season 2.
it's also super exciting just not knowing at all what happens, which is only because it is seriously underrated, like you said. which is now a travesty when i check the fic numbers on AO3.
there is so much content too, im already planning to rewatch certain episodes after im done, i cannot believe ive slept on this when I was literally watching house, lie to me, and criminal minds at the time it was airing and i would say it is 1000000% better than all of those shows (lie to me, i love you, but season 3 was a hot mess)

Chapter 5: The new future (for now)
“Hello?” Eddie says over the phone as Richie drops it. He looks wide eyed out to open space, shocked, because Eddie is alive! The whole thing worked and he almost completely spaces out, but Eddie is yelling really loudly over the phone to get Richie's attention.
“HELLO?” Eddie yells and Richie grabs the phone from its spot on the ground. His hands are trembling and he tries his best to keep calm.
“Sorry, sorry, I just uh, wasn’t expecting you to be calling me.”
“Are you fucking serious Rich? You knew we had plans and you’re dropping your phone again? Please don’t tell me you cracked the screen again, that’d be your third one this year and I understand you’re famous yada yada, but that doesn’t mean you can be throwing your phone around like it’s garbage!”
“What plans?” Richie asks, because he genuinely doesn’t know, and also, he really would like to see Eddie now that he knows he’s alive. He kinda feels like he’s floating on air and he feels like he may go crazy, if he hasn’t already that is.
“God, I swear, you make over 6 figures and you’re the smartest guy I know, but sometimes I have no idea where the hell your head is at. Where are you? We’ve been waiting forever for you.”
“I’m the smartest guy you know?” Richie says and Eddie huffs. “I never said that! Also, that isn’t the point, where the hell are you?”
“Oh, uh, I’m at Al’s diner in Libson falls,” Richie says and Eddie snaps.
"You knew we were getting food and you went out? What the hell Richie?!"
"I have no idea what you're talking about. When I came here, everyone had already gone home."
Eddie doesn't say anything, it takes him a moment, but then he talks soft, his anger seems to have vanished.
“Oh my god. Today is the day, isn’t it?”
“What day?”
“The day you went back in time“,” Eddie says, it’s a whisper, and Richie can barely hear it, but it’s easy enough to make out. The events of the day are replaying itself in his head and his headache is soaring. He really needs some advil.
“Oh, yeah, that day, mhmmm. Yeah, that was today. Oh my god, please don’t tell me you all are waiting for me at that fucking house, because we never killed Pennywise.”
“No, we did,” Eddie says, pausing. “Do you remember anything? Like, do you remember the last 27 years?”
“It depends,” Richie says, trying to think of any possible changes in the future on his life, but it comes blank. “Did everything happen the way it did last time?”
“Holy fuck. You really remember nothing? Not even getting married?” Eddie asks and Richie looks confusingly down at his hands, and sure enough, a big gold wedding band was sitting on his ring finger.
“Holy shit!” Richie yells. “You’re fucking with me. You have to be. This cannot be real. I’m fucking married!?”
Briefly he sees a clip play in his mind of another hand putting a ring on his finger. It's hard to see, but it happened like he was there. He can feel the ring be slipped on his finger and he hears the static noise, like he was way too focused to hear anything. It barely lasts a second, like it was nothing at all, and Richie discards the thought.
“Okay, maybe over the phone isn’t the best place to explain everything, just come to the The Jade of the Orient, we already got our food,” Eddie says.
"Yeah, okay, bye," Richie says, shaking his head, it's been a weird day, that's for sure. He doesn't even look back, he just makes his way to his car and drives.
He tries to come up with anything from his past, but without talking to anyone or being able to look at his phone, it's not like he can come up with much. He speeds the entire ride back to Derry and as the anxiety fills, he does his best to breathe.
.....
When he arrives at the restaurant, a boy, roughly around the age of 4 latches on to him as soon as he gets close to the table.
"Daddy," the boy says, grabbing Richie's leg and crying. "Melissa is being mean to me and I don't wanna sit at the kids table, I wanna sit by you," he whines, putting his arms up and staring at Richie, waiting to be picked up.
Richie nervously chuckles. The kid is cute, real cute, that's for sure, but it's weird. The kid looks slightly like him, especially when he was 4, the kid had the same nose and mouth.
He looks at the other losers for a second, confused and making sure this kid was actually his, because sure, he killed Pennywise, but what in the future could change so drastically that he'd have a kid?
He's not sure, and when the other losers just stare at him and Beverly gestures at him to pick the kid up, that's what he does and the kid wraps his arms around him, sighing contently.
He's sees another scene for a few moments. A glimpse of watching the kid be born, holding him in his arms for the first time, and teaching him to speak. It's sweet and it makes Richie let out a few tears.
This is weird. This is really weird. What the fuck is going on?
He sits down to the only spot left, which is between Stan and Eddie.
It looks like they've all brought their significant others with, because next to Stan, Bill, and Mike are woman he's never seen before. There is also a table close by that's filled with kids. There are almost as many kids as there were adults and he's pretty sure that they belong to his friends, because one comes up to Beverly for a second to whisper in her ear before running back to the table.
"So, uh, what did I miss this last 27 years guys?" Richie asks and Beverly goes to say something, but shuts it, and he's not sure why, until she gestures to what seems to be Stanley's wife, who wasn't looking.
That’s when he realized that right, there are others besides the losers here and they don’t know about the demonic space clown or time travel. So, talking about that here was just not an option.
It seems like he won't be getting answers right now, but that's okay, he's starving.
"Don’t joke like that Richie, we saw you in May! We just sat down and Mike was about to give us some news," Beverly said and Mike goes wide eyed.
"Right, well, me and Jennifer," he gestures to the woman next to him. She's smiling brightly at him and he does the same, looking at her with admiration in his eyes for a few moments before taking her hand and looking at the rest of the losers. "Are having twins!"
"Oh my god, twins, congrats Mike and Jenny!" Beverly says and the rest of the losers go into a small chatter, asking Jennifer a bunch of questions. “When is the baby due?”, “how long have you known?”, “do you have names picked out?” Richie is confused the entire time, but he tries to think and figure out the missing puzzle pieces, because there are a lot of them.
Number one, who the hell is his wife? I mean, he's married, that's apparent and he has a kid. He remembers being in the hospital to carry the newborn in his arms for the first time and he's assuming that blurry woman in his flashback was his wife, it had to be.
"I'm sorry, but where is my wife?" Richie whispers to Eddie and he nearly spit takes.
"Excuse me?" Eddie asks, choking on his water and wiping his mouth from the water that leaked through.
"I mean, I'm obviously married, but I don't see her. Is she at home or something?" Richie asks and Eddie shakes his head. His kid pinches him.
"Don't joke with Dad like that. You know he doesn't like it," his kid says and Richie looks at the kid confusingly then back to Eddie.
"Why the hell is he calling you Dad? I thought I was his Dad, what the fuck is going on?" Richie whisper yells at Eddie. His heart starts pounding loudly then and he hears it in his ears. This was a joke, right? Or, maybe, was Eddie his husband? That couldn't be possible right? That's stupid. Eddie was straight and Richie has a kid. It would be impossible for them to have a kid, he had a vision. He-.
The kid pinches him again.
"Ow, what was that for?"
"Dad told me to do that when you say those words."
Right, he swore. He deserved that.
"I'm sorry buddy, I won't do it again, I promise."
"You're such a bad liar," Eddie says.
Richie huffs, waits a second, looking at Eddie for answers and when he doesn't say anything, Richie puts a hand on his shoulder and whispers again, quiet enough that the kid won’t hear him this time.
"Can you please just tell me what's going on with this," He says gesturing to his ring, then also to his kid.
"Can you just wait until lunch is over? There is a lot to explain," Eddie says and Richie knows that, but it doesn't stop him from being really nervous. His life has dramatically changed and he's not sure how to even act because well, he has a kid now and he’s married. He still seems to be famous though, so his job is at least the same.
Oh, right. His manager had called him. He'd call back, but that seems like a bad idea considering there is a high chance that he won't know what the hell is manager is talking about. So, he looked at his phone to see if he had any texts.
From The Boss Man:
Richie, answer your phone. I know you're on vacation right now, but Christina needs to know if you can do that surprise show in Maine tomorrow considering you're already there?
From The Boss Man:
We need to know if we can sell tickets asshole. Answer me. Now.
From The Boss Man:
We're talking about a lot of money here Rich. We only have an hour to secure our spot or we give it up.
From The Boss Man:
Richie, I swear to god. You've never toured in Maine and there is a high demand for you there right now.
Okay, maybe Richie should call back. His manager seemed pretty upset. So, he excuses himself and tries to get his kid to sit down.
"I have to make an important phone call, I'll be right back, okay buddy?"
The kid shook his head. "I don't wanna sit here."
Richie sighs and thinks for a second before handing the kid to Eddie.
"Here, just sit with Eddie and I'll be right back. I promise."
The kid huffs, but he wraps his arms around Eddie anyways and Richie is surprised on how easily the kid just lets himself be around Eddie like that when it was Richie’s kid, but he dismisses the thought, he has something else to worry about right now.
He walks towards the back and calls his manager.
"Richie, you better have a good explanation for this!"
"My phone died," he lied and the thing is, he didn’t wait that long to call. When he opened his phone at Al’s diner, his manager had only called him a minute ago; and sure, he did ignore the next call in the car, but he was still flustered. Still is, but at least in this moment, he can distract himself from the bigger problem. Push a problem with another problem seemed like a good idea in Richie’s mind a minute ago.
His manager sighed, for some reason believing him. Richie is just glad that the voice is familiar and the same manager as before.
"Okay, well, can you do it or not?"
"What, the show? I don't know. What routine would I be doing?"
"The most recent one. This will be the first show to hear it. Remember, we stayed up until like 3am five weeks in a row trying to perfect it? This will be the perfect place to see how people feel about it."
Richie wants to say yes, but knows that he has no idea what his new routine is or what he'd say.
"I don't remember it all. I'll mess it up. It's too soon."
"Dude, it's been like over a month. You've practiced it dozens of times. You know, you don't have to be nervous. Everyone knows you’re gay already and it might be nice for people to see you there, you know, considering the trial.”
"I'm gay?" Richie questions, like it's not true and his manager huffs.
"Dude, you're not funny. You're lucky that you're saying that to me and not Eddie. He'd kick your ass. Anyways, if you really are nervous, you know you can look at the routine on your phone on Google docs. I'm going to say you can, okay?"
"Uh, yeah sure. Also, why would Eddie be kicking my ass?"
"You're insufferable. How he married you, I will never understand. Now I have to go and book your show before it becomes unavailable. Turn your volume on and answer me next time. Bye."
Married. Gay. Holy shit. Married to Eddie Kaspbrack. This is impossible. This is not happening. Eddie is straight. He married a woman and now, he's just married to me? Richie thinks and he shakes, breathing heavily.
It happens again, a flashback he assumes. It's similar to before with a hand putting a ring on his finger, but it's Eddie and he's younger, closer to 30 rather than 40. They're smiling at each other and tears are trickling both their faces. He's never seen Eddie look so happy and when the priest tells them to kiss, they do, and Richie can almost feel Eddie's lips on his, but its only an image, Eddie pulls back, then the flashback ends.
That's weird. This weird. He's married to Eddie. Is he dreaming? It has to be a dream and soon he'll wake up.
He pinches himself waiting to be awoken, but he doesn't and he shakes his head, brushing a hand through his hair.
It takes him awhile to gather himself and he almost goes back to the other losers, but instead he decides to walk over to the bathroom and lock himself in a stall. The first thing he does is checks his messages with Eddie, which was the second to the top of messages.
The most recent ones said stuff along the line of ‘where the hell are you?’ and ‘Richie, this isn’t funny, where did you go this morning???’, but as he scrolls up, he sees more texts like ‘when are you getting home tonight?’, ‘Braxton won’t go to bed until you tuck him in’, ‘I need to get to work, will you be home or do I need to call the babysitter?”.
That seems to imply that maybe, just maybe, he was married to Eddie as weird as that sounded.
The texts even got more domestic, some containing ‘I love you’ and mostly ‘when are you coming home?’ But really, what does the cherry on top is a message from Eds reading ‘I need your cock’.
He almost drops his phone again. It’s quite embarrassing and he has to take another moment to contain himself, shaking his head. This could not be fucking real.
Another clip plays in his mind again, he’s looking at the same text, about to do a show, and he smiles, shaking his head, before replying ‘and I need that ass.’ After the clip plays, he looks down at his phone, seeing the exact text sent from him. There is no more texts like that afterwards and their “sexting” doesn’t continue, left there, like maybe it was a joke.
He stares at the stall door for a moment, lost in thought, before his phone buzzed and he looks down at his new text from Eddie.
From: Eds
Where the fuck did you go? I saw you on the phone and now you're gone. Everyone is done eating and wants to meet back at the hotel.
To: Eds
Don't worry. I just had to go to the bathroom.
From: Eds
For like 15 minutes?
To: Eds
I had to poo
From: Eds
Can you just hurry up? Your kid is making my arm numb.
Richie sighed, getting up and looking at himself in the mirror. He looks better then he thought he would. It seems that with him being in the future and probably having a normal sleep schedule, he actually looks good. His hair is shorter, not by much, but it looks more tamed, like he's been putting in the effort. His clothes are notably clean and he has at least showered today, unlike the last timeline. He still feels tired though and he still has a headache. He wonders how he can look this good, the best he's ever looked and still feel like his head is about to pop. He doesn't think more of it though, remembering his friends back at the table, and makes his way out of the bathroom, then towards their table.
Eddie is still sitting, all the other losers are gone, and the kid- Braxton, is laying on his shoulder, sleeping, which explains the text he just got from Eddie.
He walks over and Eddie sighs, standing up, trying carefully to keep the child asleep. Luckily he does and Eddie starts walking towards the door.
When they get outside, Eddie puts the kid in the car seat.
How the hell did I not notice that before?  Richie thinks, trying to remember if he did or not, but he assumes that maybe he missed it because of how tired he is.
He does it carefully, Eddie strapping the kid like he’s a newborn. He’s careful and luckily, the kid doesn’t wake up. Eddie gets in the drivers side and Richie in the passenger, driving towards the hotel.
They’re alone now and it’s weirdly silent. Richie has so many questions and he’s not sure what to even ask. Luckily, Eddie can read Richie like a book, so he speaks first.
“Yes, we’re married and yes, that’s your kid. Most importantly it’s our kid, but it has your DNA. We had a surrogate and it was also your idea. You were obsessed with the movie Baby Mama so badly that you wouldn’t shut up about doing it. I even waited four years to make sure you weren’t fucking with me and literally four years on the dot, you booked an appointment.”
He gets another jolt of memory then, watching the movie, going to the office, meeting the surrogate mother, and lastly, watching Braxton be born again. This time the picture is a little more vivid and with all this added information, the first thought that comes to Richie’s mind is oh, that movie!
“Baby Mama, like that movie with Tina Fey that all those middle aged women are obsessed with?” Richie asks and Eddie chuckles.
“Of course that’s the first thing that comes to your mind, jeez. Yes. You’ve watched it over like 100 times. After Braxton was born, you literally cry every time you watch it.”
“I am a middle aged woman,” Richie says next and he starts to space out, but then Eddie is talking again.
“I mean kinda, but not really. If you were, I wouldn’t have married you.”
“You’re gay?” Richie asks and Eddie laughs again.
“Well, duh. I thought that was obvious after I told you I married you.”
“But, you-”
“Yeah, I know, I can’t tell you why I did what I did in the first timeline, but I mean, I didn’t tell anyone I was gay until I was 18, and that was only because I was crushing on you so bad that it was honestly annoying.”
“Wait, you had a crush on me?”
Eddie rolls his eyes and snorts. “Are you kidding me?”
“I don’t know,” Richie exclaimed, raising his hands in the air. “I thought you were straight my whole life. I never even came out in my timeline, so hearing I’m married to a man is a huge shocker to me.”
“You never came out?”
“No,” Richie said, biting his lip. “How long have we, uh, been married?”
“8 years and we’ve been dating for 22.”
“Holy shit,” is the only thing that Richie can get out, because 22 years, 22 years he’s been with Eddie. He’s never even been with anyone longer than 2 and now he was married with a kid.
“Braxton, our kid, he’s 4. We got married in 2008 and you proposed to me, which was really dumb, because I was going to purpose to you first. Literally had it planned for just two weeks later, so fuck you for that. Oh and you also came out on Ellen.”
“I came out on Ellen?” Richie asked and what is the most surprising about that statement is that it's Ellen. He was not famous enough to be on Ellen or cool enough either.
“Yes? We finished our honeymoon like 2 days prior and the first thing you said to her and I kid you not was “hey, Ellen, I’m gay how are you?” then you showed her a picture of me holding our dog.”
Richie sees it, Ellen inviting him onto the show, telling her he’s gay, and his dog. He loved his little Pomeranian. What was the name? What was the name?
“Our dog’s name is Daisy, she’s very cute,” Eddie adds, as Richie parks into the hotel parking lot. He stays still, he doesn’t know what to say or think, because all of this was so good, but also so weird, that Richie didn’t know how to process it.
Eddie can tell though, because he sighs, before he pats Richie’s shoulder. “Come on, let’s go. The other losers are waiting for us. We can talk more about this later. I think you uh, need time to process.
“Process, yeah, that seems good,” Richie says, unmoving and Eddie opens his car door, walking around the door to take a sleeping 4 year old in his arm, and looking in Richie's door.
“Are you coming?” Eddie asks and Richie just shakes his head. “Yeah, of course,” he says, getting out of the car and closing the door shut.
“Do you have any advil?” Richie asks as Eddie shuts the door behind him, handing Richie their kid.
“Yeah, hold on,” Eddie says, reaching into his pocket and taking out a small bottle, opening it, then hands the pill to Richie.
“Thanks,” Richie says, walking into the hotel and swallowing, meeting the other losers at the bar.
It’s weird, the way everything is. Without fear, without uncertainty. All of them had their lives together, no one looked like they were sad or upset. He could tell that everything was the way it should be, smiling couples and no problems of demonic clowns or being alone forever. They had kids, something they couldn’t do before, and they all looked to be in love, which, that in itself was pretty impossible for a group of 7. However, it looks like they did it and it makes Richie smile.
He doesn’t want to go back. He wants this to be real so badly, that he feels like at any moment that it’ll be ripped from right underneath him like some sick joke; because that’s how his life has always felt like, a joke.
His stomach churns then and he feels like maybe he’s about to have a panic attack, which is weird. He should be happy right now, but he can’t. It’s about to be ripped away. He can feel it and before he knows it, he’s excusing himself and getting out of the hotel.
He sits in his car, trying to steady his breathing, thinking about everything, yet nothing at all and he's in there for a long time, that he forgets that it’s possible that people were waiting for him inside.
Beverly is the one who ends up coming to check on him. She walks to the side of the car and knocks on the window, waiting for Richie to put it down, which he does.
“Hey,” she says. “Are you okay? You seemed kind of sick when you were in there.” She's worried, Richie can tell and he doesn't want her to, that's why he excused himself in the first place. He didn't want anyone to see him like this.
“I’m fine,” he says. “I just-. I don’t know. I think that maybe I’m missing something, that my future is about to crumble beneath me," Richie confesses and he's not sure why he says it, but Richie has always had trouble keeping quiet. Probably the reason why being bisexual scared him so much, he was always afraid of letting himself slip. He talks without thinking, it's a natural talent, and also a natural pain in the ass sometimes too, but it's who he is and he has to bite his lip from swearing at himself.
“It’s not. I can promise you Richie, it isn’t, You’re just confused. Just come inside and let Eddie explain, alright? I know it’s some getting used to, but you’re still the same, right? We’ll wait for you to remember, you do remember, right?”
“Not really,” Richie says, staring at his windshield as he talks. “I mean, I’ve been having these mini flashbacks every time someone says or does something that triggers it, but that’s it.”
Beverly frowns and she’s unsure of what to say, but she gives Richie the most she can.
“I can’t say that everything is going to be perfect and you’ll remember everything, but give it time okay? The more time you give it, the better, I promise.”
“Yeah, okay,” Richie says, but he still feels unsure. Still has the crushing feeling that something was about to happen and everything would go back to the way it was. He’s not even sure why. His chest tightens and he has the sudden urge to cry again. He thinks about Eddie’s death again. It’s vivid in his mind and he wants to scream, wants to check on Stanley to make sure he’s okay, that he hasn’t harmed himself. It all gets way too much and all he knows is that he needs to do something about it, but he's not sure what.
The first thing that comes to mind is to drive, to get away, and before he knows it, he tells Beverly he’s sorry, then drives away.

Little thoughts
So I’m binge-watching The Mentalist again - god, I forgot how much I loved this show, seriously, the cast was brilliant and Jane...my god, Jane was just the best.
And I swear to god, I really did have moments where I thought he was Red-John. Especially little moments like His Red Right Hand S2/E08 - the way he kept sort of smiling when Rebecca was killed. You could almost think he was pleased that someone had managed to poison Rebecca to keep her from talking.
Seriously - I think it would have been an interesting twist if Jane had turned out to be Red John- I thought it would have turned out the Red John everyone was chasing was a copy cat and the two of them were stuck in their own twisted little ways of trying to one-up the other that turned personal when RJ took out Jane’s family.
Then again - that’s just me, don’t mind me.
(I’m kind of sadistic in that kind of way - especially I ship Jane/Libson and was totally rooting for CBI team to be working for him when they didn’t even realise it)
And can I say how excited I am for Persona 5 Royale? Cause I need it, like yesterday just so I can have extra content, to romance Makoto all over again and to have the extra storyline.
And of course - to have Ryuji all over again, because he has such pretty brown eyes. I miss this guy - Let’s hope in this game, I have the option to step in and protect Ryuji this time around because fuck that comedy crap.
But until then - I need to prepare myself for Three Houses cause I’m totally hoping I can be bisexual and romance whoever I want in this game. Now...what house to choose? I’m leaning toward blue because I’m a sucker for blue but I’m tempted to go red...
meh - we’ll see
but seriously - Jane as Red John would have been awesome in a way. So many little hints there. Especially when you could see it as Jane being pissed off people are crediting his kills to the copy-cat.

Portable system boosts laser precision, at room temperature
Physicists at MIT have designed a quantum “light squeezer” that reduces quantum noise in an incoming laser beam by 15 percent. It is the first system of its kind to work at room temperature, making it amenable to a compact, portable setup that may be added to high-precision experiments to improve laser measurements where quantum noise is a limiting factor.
The heart of the new squeezer is a marble-sized optical cavity, housed in a vacuum chamber and containing two mirrors, one of which is smaller than the diameter of a human hair. The larger mirror stands stationary while the other is movable, suspended by a spring-like cantilever.
The shape and makeup of this second “nanomechanical” mirror is the key to the system’s ability to work at room temperature. When a laser beam enters the cavity, it bounces between the two mirrors. The force imparted by the light makes the nanomechanical mirror swing back and forth in a way that allows the researchers to engineer the light exiting the cavity to have special quantum properties.
The laser light can exit the system in a squeezed state, which can be used to make more precise measurements, for instance, in quantum computation and cryptology, and in the detection of gravitational waves.
“The importance of the result is that you can engineer these mechanical systems so that at room temperature, they still can have quantum mechanical properties,” says Nergis Mavalvala, the Marble Professor and associate head of physics at MIT. “That changes the game completely in terms of being able to use these systems, not just in our own labs, housed in large cryogenic refrigerators, but out in the world.”
The team has published its results today in the journal Nature Physics. The paper’s lead author is Nancy Aggarwal, a former physics graduate student in the MIT LIGO Laboratory, now a postdoc at Northwestern University. Other co-authors on the paper along with Mavalvala are Robert Lanza and Adam Libson at MIT; Torrey Cullen, Jonathan Cripe, and Thomas Corbitt of Louisiana State University; and Garrett Cole, David Follman, and Paula Heu of Crystalline Mirror Solutions in Santa Barbara, California.
A cold “showstopper”
A laser contains multitudes of photons that stream out in synchronized waves to produce a bright, focused beam of light. Within this ordered configuration, however, there is a bit of randomness among a laser’s individual photons, in the form of quantum fluctuations, also known in physics as “shot noise.”
For instance, the number of photons in a laser that arrive at a detector at any given time can fluctuate around an average number, in a quantum way that is difficult to predict. Likewise, the time at which a photon arrives at a detector, related to its phase, can also fluctuate around an average value.
Both of these values — the number and timing of a laser’s photons — determine how precisely researchers can interpret laser measurements. But according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, one of the foundational tenets of quantum mechanics, it is impossible to simultaneously measure both the position (or timing) and the momentum (or number) of particles at the same time with absolute certainty.
Scientists work around this physical constraint through quantum squeezing — the idea that the uncertainty in a laser’s quantum properties, in this case the number and timing of photons, can be represented as a theoretical circle. A perfectly round circle symbolizes equal uncertainty in both properties. An ellipse — a squeezed circle — represents a smaller uncertainty for one property and a larger uncertainty for the other, depending on how the circle, and the ratio of uncertainty in a laser’s quantum properties, is manipulated.
One way researchers have carried out quantum squeezing is through optomechanical systems, designed with parts, such as mirrors, that can be moved to a tiny degree by incoming laser light. A mirror can move due to the force applied on it by photons that make up the light, and that force is proportional to the number of photons that hit the mirror at a given time. The distance the mirror moved at that time is connected to the timing of photons arriving at the mirror.
Of course, scientists cannot know the precise values for both the number and timing of photons at a given time, but through this kind of system they can establish a correlation between the two quantum properties, and thereby squeeze down the uncertainty and the laser’s overall quantum noise.
Until now, optomechanical squeezing has been realized in large setups that need to be housed in cryogenic freezers. That’s because, even at room temperature, the surrounding thermal energy is enough to have an effect on the system’s movable parts, causing a “jitter” that overwhelms any contribution from quantum noise. To shield against thermal noise, researchers have had to cool systems down to about 10 Kelvin, or -440 degrees Fahrenheit.
“The minute you need cryogenic cooling, you can’t have a portable, compact squeezer,” Mavalvala says. “That can be a showstopper, because you can’t have a squeezer that lives in a big refrigerator, and then use it in an experiment or some device that operates in the field.”
Giving light a squeeze
The team, led by Aggarwal, looked to design an optomechanical system with a movable mirror made from materials that intrinsically absorb very little thermal energy, so that they would not need to cool the system externally. They ultimately designed a very small, 70-micron-wide mirror from alternating layers of gallium arsenide and aluminum gallium arsenide. Both materials are crystals with a very ordered atomic structure that prevents any incoming heat from escaping.
“Very disordered materials can easily lose energy because there are lots of places electrons can bang and collide and generate thermal motion,” Aggarwal says. “The more ordered and pure a material, the less places it has to lose or dissipate energy.”
The team suspended this multilayer mirror with a small, 55-micron-long cantilever. The cantilever and multilayer mirror have also been shaped to absorb minimal thermal energy. Both the movable mirror and the cantilever were fabricated by Cole and his colleagues at Crystalline Mirror Solutions, recently acquired and now part of Thorlabs Inc., and placed in a cavity with a stationary mirror.
The system was then installed in a laser experiment built by Corbitt’s group at Louisiana State University, where the researchers made the measurements. With the new squeezer, the researchers were able to characterize the quantum fluctuations in the number of photons versus their timing, as the laser bounced and reflected off both mirrors. This characterization allowed the team to identify and thereby reduce the quantum noise from the laser by 15 percent, producing a more precise “squeezed” light.
Aggarwal has drawn up a blueprint for researchers to adopt the system to any wavelength of incoming laser light.
“As optomechanical squeezers become more practical, this is the work that started it,” Mavalvala says. “It shows that we know how to make these room temperature, wavelength-agnostic squeezers. As we improve the experiment and materials, we’ll make better squeezers.”
This research was funded, in part, by U.S. National Science Foundation.

Who should partner Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool’s defence?
Liverpool faces defensive dilemma Jurgen Klopp is looking for a permanent partner for Virgil van Dijk … how do Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren compare?
Liverpool continues its preseason against Sporting Libson on Wednesday
The side of Jurgen Klopp lost back-to-back matches of Borussia Dortmund and Seville
The German still has to settle for his best with missing protagonists
He is confronted with a defensive headache while looking for a partner for Virgil van Dijk

The American leg of Liverpool preseason has some problems for Jurgen Klopp raised with 11 days to go to the Community Shield against Manchester City
Defeats by Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla have the optimism around Anfield ahead of the new season.
Shaved from his three attacking stars, Liverpool did not look good and Klopp made an effort to find his best side.
Liverpool is looking for a permanent partner for Virgil van Dijk in the back of this season
Nowhere is that more pronounced than in the center of defense, where the manager has a headache in finding his first-choice partnership.
Virgil van Dijk is assured of his place as he intends to add the Ballon d & # 39; Or to his last season's PFA Player of the Year gong
Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren fought it out to be his regular partner. Sportsmail assesses the options of the Reds …
Joel Matip
At the beginning of 2018-19, the former Cameroonian international was very much Klopp & # 39; s fourth choice center-back
He started only three Premier League games before Christmas, but injuries to Gomez and Lovren gave him a golden chance.
And he grabbed it with both hands.
Matip hardly looked convincing since arriving in the summer of 2016 on a free transfer from Schalke.
Joel Matip from Cameroon excelled together with van Dijk towards the end of last season
Just as self-assured and commanding as Van Dijk, Matip often betrayed nerves and indecision and was plagued by inconsistency.
But a series of competitions alongside the towering Dutchman improved him tenfold. When Gomez and Lovren returned to fitness, Matip retained his shirt and confirmed his place in Klopp & # 39; s first choice XI.
He excelled in the run for Champions League glory, especially in the semi-final against Barcelona and in the end. He was Liverpool's most improved player during the course of the season.
Will that be enough to hold his place in Klopp & # 39; s first choice? If not, it is not due to his own fault. Joe Gomez was first choice alongside Dijk & # 39; s injury in December "class ="
Joe Gomez
] Joe Gomez was first choice alongside van Dijk before injury shortened his season in December
Only two games last season, Martin Keown of Sportsmail made the bold prediction that Gomez and van Dijk could become one of the major Premier League defensive partnerships.
And that looked strange when Liverpool & # 39; s rather fragile defense formed the basis for their attack on the league title.
But just as the couple seemed embedded, injury inflicted on the English international 9013]
Gomez worked nine times with Van Dijk before breaking his leg in Burnley in December, with Liverpool only four goals in that time.
He returned to action in April but only started once, in the 3-0 Semi-Final Champions League defeat at the Nou Camp.
With a full preseason behind him, Klopp will be hopeful that Gomez can return to the form that made him an automatic pick in the first – half of the last campaign.
Gomez was the perfect foil for van Dijk. His acceleration helped Liverpool deploy a high line, and his awareness meant that he was rarely caught out of position.
If he shows that he has not lost it, he is certainly a no-brainer for the manager. At 22, he is the future of Liverpool's defense.
Dejan Lovren
dropped] Dejan Lovren appeared only 18 times last season and the pecking order has slipped
After supporting the last appearance of the Champions League with one in the World Cup, it was a disappointing 12 months for the Croatian.
After he finally nailed his place as the first choice at the end of 2017-18, Lovren returned injured to the preseason last year.
He lost his place in the result and struggled to string a series together throughout the season, leaving only 18 appearances in total.
Lovren never succeeds in supporting himself, famous for insisting that he was one of the best defenders in the world last summer, but has not backed up since.
The shape of his two rivals last season has relegated the 30-year-old to the fourth choice.
He still has two years to go with his deal with the club and this could be his last, although AC Milan liked to switch this summer
The arrival of the 17-year-old Sepp van den Berg and the rich promise of Ki-Jana Hoever show that Liverpool is already looking for the future.

[text] Libson? Where is that at? I'll have to look into it a little, but I hope that you're taking a lot of pictures while you're exploring? I'd love to see some of them. [text] You might miss our concert here in town, but we'll be around until Monday! So we can definitely meet up before we head out.
[text] It’s the capital of Portugal - I hope I didn’t write it wrong? Despite my dyslexia, I don’t always check my spelling... Of course I am. We both are. It’s such a great city to be in. I’ll show them to you, once we’re home.
[text] I hope we’ll make it. We’ll see, it depends on when our flight lands. That’d be great, though, we want to invite people over this weekend.

Prometheus creates the first man 1806
Pen and grey ink and grey and brown wash over traces of black chalk
Pinelli depicts the moment Minerva animates the first man, sculpted from clay by the titan Prometheus. It was a subject that was explored by a number of contemporary artists in Rome. At precisely the date Pinelli was working on this drawing, the great Danish sculpture Bertel Thorvaldsen was making designs for a roundel of the same subject, showing the same combination of elements: the seated, naked titan sculpting tool in hand admiring his creation, whilst standing Minerva animates the figure, an act symbolised by a butterfly.

PORTLAND, Maine | APNewsBreak: Coca-Cola acquires Moxie, soda beloved in Maine
PORTLAND, Maine — Soft drink giant Coca-Cola announced on Tuesday it is acquiring Moxie, a long-lived and beloved New England soda brand that is the official state beverage of Maine.
Moxie has been around since the 19th century and it’s famous in New England for its unique flavor, which is the product of a root extract that gives it a distinctive taste that polarizes drinkers. Coca-Cola said Tuesday it’s acquiring the brand from Coca-Cola of Northern New England, an independent bottling partner of the larger company that’s in Bedford, New Hampshire.
Bottling of the soda will remain in New Hampshire, said Lauren Thompson, a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola. She said the company’s goal is to “work to protect the heritage and regional culture of the brand,” and that Coca-Cola also sees an opportunity to bring Moxie’s brand to a wider audience.
“Moxie is a great brand with a great heritage. Coca-Cola Northern New England has been a strong steward of the brand over the last decade and we take seriously our responsibility to ensure it stays true to its Northeastern roots,” she said.
Coca-Cola declined to provide the price of the sale, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year. Coca-Cola North America has entered into a definitive agreement with Coca-Cola of Northern New England, Thompson said.
The acquisition by Coca-Cola won’t result in any noticeable differences for consumers, said Nick Martin, a spokesman for Coca-Cola of Northern New England. The soda is produced at a facility in Londonderry, N.H., and that facility will remain the exclusive manufacturer.
“If I had to look into my crystal ball, it will primarily remain a regional brand,” Martin said. “It just goes to show you that there’s a tremendously loyal following to this product.”
Moxie is most closely associated with the state of Maine, where it is the subject of the annual Moxie Festival in Libson, a river town of 8,800. The drink is also widely used as a mixer in New England, where it’s used to make “Moxie cocktails.”
Moxie states on its website that the drink was patented in 1885 as “Moxie Nerve Food,” and it was the first bottled carbonated beverage made in America. It was once the subject of “wild curative claims,” but would grow to become a popular soft drink in the coming decades, the website states.
