i kinda love jn102 .

jn102 is the episode where goh does one of his many trial missions, specifically where he and other project mew challengers have a raid battle against articuno.

the appearance of articuno completes the list which means all legendary birds have shown up in journeys, and we get to see gary and tokio again. i will not be calling him horace, u can’t make me. i’ve said his dub name enough times today.

but, tbh, i hated this ep when i first watched it.

the battle seemed rushed in a way, and i didn’t really understand what was going on. i loved to see the return of tokio and ash finally getting to meet him, and i absolutely love gary, but this episode didn’t do it for me.

so, i rewatched it. like, 5 times. and my god, did it get better.

so much stuff happened in the battle, and it was truly interesting to watch when my attention span actually decided to last over 4 seconds long. but, that wasn’t even the best part of the episode, the battle.

after the battle is over, and everybody is leaving the island, tokio tells goh that he did just fine, even though he got less tokens than both him and gary. in the battle, goh seemed to take over a lot, and make uncalculated decisions, but tokio reassured him, and told him he’d have more chances and did amazing in this chance as well.

but gary turns around, instantly disagreeing. and honestly, it’s the best part of the ep. (dub ver, cuz i was listening to it while writing this.)

GA - "sometimes, kindness is what holds someone back. you forgive their mistakes and encourage their impossible dreams, while raising their hopes, you bring the worst possible outcome."

GO - "what does that mean?"

GA - "i joined you, because this time, the mission was a raid battle. but since we're still challengers, you're not my friend."

AS - "come on, what's the matter with a couple of friends helping each other?"

GA - "you're as clueless as ever."

AS - "huh?"

GA - “i think quillon's attitude is the right one. the truth is, you'll never find mew without discipline. you're starting to think the same thing, right, goh? aren't you?"

GO - ". . that's the first time you've talked to me like an equal."

GA - "hm."

GO - "take on a challenge, and then learn from it. yeah, gary, i see the way you think."

GA - "and that's the first time you've talked to me like that. i look forward to seeing you again, later."

i didn’t think much of this scene when i first watch this episode, but god, did i think of it every other time. it’s the first time shigegou talk to each other as equals and not rivals, and rlly prepares for what eventually happens 11 episodes later, the first time they work as a team.

cause since jn068 when goh met gary, he was absolutely annoyed at everything he ever did, and wouldn't listen to him just for the sake of not listening to him. even earlier in this episode, that showed. he didn’t listen when he needed to, because he didn’t want gary to be right.

but now that they finished the raid battle, and goh matured quite a bit and learned a lot abt teamwork, he sees why gary acts the way he does, especially towards him. he wants goh to improve, just like he wanted ash to improve back in os.

i haven't watched most of os but ik there's a clip from ep270, where gary gives ash his half of the poké ball he got so long ago, and talks abt how their league battle went and how his way of mind changed. and how back in their fishing battle when they ‘tied’, gary took it as a loss. but now he’s matured, he knows that in this battle ash won fair and square.

but, even if it wasn't showed in that clip, gary helped ash improve a lot, and it showed that gary wanted ash to improve even if he didn't always say what he meant.

this then happened in jn068 again, when gary was teasing goh the entire episode. but gary's clearly grown mentally even more since his last appearance, and thats why he seems to clearly want goh to improve. but instead, he tends to use his wisdom and the lessons he's learned, even if he still seems like some rude brat sometimes.

every time gary’s appeared in journeys, up to this point, he seems to have annoyed goh by just being there. at the end of jn068, goh learns that gary just acts like he does, never meaning what he shows on the outside.

but instead of just taking it, like he’s seen to do, it feels like he just . . couldn’t trust him. not enough, not yet. of course he couldn’t, they barely talked and their first meeting was absolutely awful for him. but in jn102, he seems to have finally earned goh’s trust, and they now accept each other as equals.

yeah, that’s it. i’ll be rewatching this episode for the rest of time, tyvm. i love shigegou.

But I wouldn’t need to apply this new super patch to the EP and SP, right? I do get a message when I’m in the installation process (Game Validation Step) that the Sims 3 game “version installed is more recent than expected” and that the expansion pack being installed “could be incompatible”. I’m doing so in the order you stated (First release to Last release) and I’m doing it one by one so far. My only concern and question would be redownloading and reinstalling the EP and SP. I had no trouble with that, thanks to this lovely post (thank you btw. So far, I was able to download and launch my sims 3 game with and without the super patch. So I decided to just log in as a new Admin account on my Mac. They even left the chat and didn’t email me back for any further assistance. And I had the worst experience with EA (contacting them in total of 4 times for any troubleshooting). Until recently I bought the Sims 3 University Life Expansion Pack. I never opened my Sims 3 game cause I had no motivation to try to fix it.

So I’ve been having problems ever since the new update (months ago) but this was when I knew nothing about this new super patch. You can check it’s patched ok by opening the Launcher and looking at the patch number in the bottom left of the window: You’ll see a little window showing the update progress:Īnd that’s it, you’ve now successfully patched your game to the most recent patch, 1.67. Navigate to Applications > The Sims 3 > The Sims 3 then click Update: The patch will open and a window will appear asking you where the game is. You need to hold down the CTRL key and click on the extracted file to open it. Gatekeeper now only allows Mac App Store and Identified Developers installations, you will not get the Anywhere option in System Preferences. You will now get another warning window, just click Open: If you don’t see the above you need to click on the lock in the bottom left corner of the window, enter your password when prompted (your user account must be an Admin account) and change the ‘ Allow apps downloaded from:’ setting to Anywhere. In the bottom half of the window you should see your Gatekeeper preferences: Click on Open Anyway as we know that file is the super patch. Navigate to System Preferences > Security & Privacy and make sure you’re in the General tab. Depending on your Gatekeeper settings, you may get an error message saying the file cannot be identified because it is from an unidentified developer:ĭon’t panic! It’s our last Dust of the year, written in an odd holding period between the flood of fall releases and the first few indicators that 2020 will, indeed, have music. We’ll be revisiting our favorite records one more time in writers’ year-end essays and hitting a few more obscurities in an upcoming, clear-the-decks January Dust. Then it’s time to say goodbye to a year that sucked on so many levels, but not in the music. This time, contributors included Justin Cober-Lake, Bill Meyer, Jennifer Kelly, Andrew Forell, Jonathan Shaw, Ian Mathers, Ray Garraty and Tim Clarke.

Brian Shankar Adler — Fourth Dimension (Chant)

Percussionist Brian Shankar Adler has a funny way of looking at the world. Or, rather, he has a funny way of looking through it. His Fourth Dimension seeks a new perspective, a new way to ask questions. Instead of trying to find new ground through abstract experimentation, he works his way into patterns and shapes that build on each other. The album opens with “Introduction Drone,” but that sort of minimalist composition provides only one small element of Adler's larger idea. He and his group glide between silent or repetitive space and more melodic, energetic bursts. The whole album, then, takes on an irregular but not erratic pulse. Vibraphonist Matt Moran provides an essential element of the disc's feel. Each artist in the quintet contributes — guitarist Joanthan Goldberger shapes particular moods, for example — but it's Moran's vibes that dictate how far the record pushes into new space. He sometimes disappears and sometimes flourishes. These movements, as much as even Adler's drumming, give the disc its musical arc and particular spot, whatever dimension you may find it in.

Angles 9 — Beyond Us (Clean Feed)

When a musician is as prolific and diverse in approach as Martin Küchen, it’s tempting to consider how each new recording fits into or extends his existing body of work. But Beyond Us often directs the listener’s attention away from Küchen and towards the skills of the eight musicians accompanying him. This is probably by design, since when you have such great players, you might as well give them chances to shine. Their collective associations extend beyond this band, which has managed to defy the prevailing economic tides in order to tour and record repeatedly over the past decade; you can also hear some of them in Paal Nilssen-Love’s Extra Large Unit and the Fire! Orchestra. Whether they’re enriching his arrangements with nuanced and energetic playing, or swinging and exulting during solos and duo exchanges, the rest of Angles 9 sound simply marvelous. In particular, trombonist Mats Älekint, cornetist Goran Kajfeš and pianist Alexander Zethson draw out the robust bluesiness of “U(n)happiez Marriages,” and baritone saxophonist proposes a Moorish counterpoint to the John Barry-ish theme of “Against the Permanent Revolution.” But everyone punches above their weight, making this a deeply satisfying addition to their collective catalogues.

LA-based trio Bach Tang — that’s Oakley Tapola on voice and guitar, Dan Ryan on bass and vocals, Rebecca Spangenthaler on drums — channel the chaotic energy of Swell Maps, The Raincoats and Essential Logic on their EP Born Too Alive. This ten-minute, six-song collection combines mutant Beefheartian boogie, defiant DIY post-punk clatter, deliberately distorted vocals and gleefully amateurish noise into a willful concoction that dares you to turn it down whilst forcing you to turn it up. Opening track “Litter Licker” is a perfect 59 seconds of racing down a hill — tumbling drums, tripping bass, guitar slashes, what sounds at first like classic fucked up sax skronking revealing itself to be the exhalations of an exhausted runner. “Dragon’s Blood!” is most straight ahead song here with a recognizable riff and even some harmonizing before it briefly collapses in on itself before a final burst to a groaning end. Bach Tang understand that brevity is the soul of wit and if the vocals can be grating, the songs flash by with enough invention to encourage repeat listens. Fans of the aforementioned bands and their ilk will find much to be intrigued by on Born Too Alive.

The Catenary Wires — Til the Morning (Tapete)

Til The Morning by The Catenary Wires

The Catenary Wires — that’s Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey — make a lovely, wistful sort of indie pop that is perfectly in line with what you’d expect from people who were in Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research and Tender Trap. This is their second album as Catenary Wires, but they’ve been at this sunshine-through-raindrops thing for a while, and the result is not exactly polish but casual grace. They seem to land exactly where they need to, every time, without much premeditation. “Dream Town,” the opener, brushes by with a reticent sureness, Fletcher’s airy soprano harmonizing with Pursey’s hollow, post-punk resonances, the whole thing stirred to gentle life with finger snaps and lilting, wafting background vocals. “Half-Written” (Fletcher leading) is nakedly spare in the verse, but blows into waltz-timed, multi-voiced crescendo in the chorus. Neither voice is perfectly tuned, but they join somehow in worn-in, comfortable harmonies like they’ve been doing it forever, and they have.

Beings of ImberIndus by Drekka

Mkl Anderson (pronounced Michael) has been hanging onto the edge of outbound sound since the mid-1990s. During that time, he’s run the Bluesanct label, played in Jessica Bailiff’s band, and played both solo and collaboratively under the name Drekka. While he often releases music digitally, his production means are primarily analog. Anderson made this 70-minute expanse of non-electronic drone with Icelandic musician þórir Georg, and while between then they play pitch pipe, voice, metal, and bass guitar, what comes out of the speakers sounds long, dark, and entirely non-instrumental. This CD burrows deep into the heart of a sonic black sun, and if you thrive on not seeing the horizon, it could be your next auditory weighted blanket.

Chit-Chatting With Herbie by Lucas Gillan's Many Blessings

The Jazz Record Art Collective is a concert series that recruits Chicagoan jazz musicians to perform a classic jazz album their way. Chit-Chatting With Herbie originated when series curator Chris Anderson commissioned drummer Lucas Gillan to participate. Gillan decided to use his band Many Blessings to provide a personal angle on Herbie Nichols Trio (Blue Note, 1956). Since Many Blessings is a piano-less quartet (with Quentin Coaxum, trumpet; Jim Schram, tenor saxophone; Daniel Thatcher, bass) and Nichols was a pianist who never recorded with horns, there’s room for interpretation. Since both horn players are pretty fluent, you never miss the chordal instrument. And since Gillan values Nichols’ delightful melodies, which shine with good humor, spirit and form transcend instrumentation. But be careful playing this record, because it’s bound to make you smile a lot. And like mom said, your face might get stuck that way.

Frode Haltli — Border Woods (Hubro)

Border Woods by Frode Haltli

In the woods, it’s not always easy to see where the borders lie. That zone of uncertainty is exactly where Norwegian accordionist situates this project. Not only does he include a Swede, nyckelharpa (a Swedish keyed fiddle) player Emilia Amper, to join his otherwise Norwegian ensemble. The music itself occupies a shadowy terrain in which classical composition from different centuries mixes with Norwegian folk themes and the squeezebox-rich atmosphere of pre-rock continental café music. Percussionists Håken Stene and Eirik Raude are equally adept at Steve Reich-like mallet patterns and bowed metal atmospherics, which operate as a backdrop for Amper and Haltli’s stark and moody melodies.

Matt Jencik — Dream Character (Hands in the Dark)

Implodes’ guitarist Matt Jencik applied thickly fuzzed-out and massively reverbed guitarscapes to Black Earth and Recurring Dream, the band’s two excellent albums for Kranky. On Jencik’s 2017 solo debut, Weird Times, stripping away Implodes’ vocals and post-punk-leaning rhythm section left his guitar to roam like a wraith, swathed in static, tracing simple yet affecting arcs against a turbulent backdrop of noisy guitar loops. Ambient rock, if you will. On his new album, Dream Character, his instrumental palette has expanded to include bass and keys (not that the sound sources are especially easy to discern), but his aesthetic focus remains as tight as ever. The result is hypnotic, offering a satisfyingly rich blend of tones with just enough movement to keep the listener entranced. While Jencik is clearly venturing into shadowy realms — signposted by song titles such as “Dead Comet Return,” “Night Gallery Pause” and “Lifeless Body Train Ride” — there’s often a shaft of light cast into the gloom, whether via brighter tones or intervals. The final track asks “R U OK” — like most music of this kind, it offers a reassuringly melancholy blanket of sound within which to take refuge.

Pedro Kastelijns — Som das Luzis (OAR!)

Som das Luzis by Pedro Kastelijns

Pedro Kastelijns hails from the same trippy Brazilian scene as Boogarins, and likewise, favors a brightly colored, soft-focus form of psychedelia that evokes Love, Os Mutantes and early aughts Animal Collective. A few cuts — “Olhos da Raposa,” for instance — tap into a beachy bossa nova vibe in the languid guitars and junk yard percussion. Others feel less rooted in place, and touched by an arch, fog-fuzzed indie rock exuberance (“Som das Luzis,” “Flux Estelar”) that brings to mind Ariel Pink. Kastelijns sings in a wobbly falsetto much of the time, and accompanies himself on very DIY sounding drums, guitars and keyboards, and there isn’t an indelible hook on the disc, despite the aspirational “Pop Gem” titles of two of the cuts. Listening is a little like being stoned—that is, pleasant, mildly disorienting and hard to remember afterwards.

Julian Loida — Wallflower (Julian Loida)

Wallflower by Julian Loida

Gateway experiences are often remembered with mild embarrassment; just because something pointed you in a particular direction doesn’t mean it’s the best example you’re ever going to hear. Julian Loida’s Wallflower might serve as a gateway to minimalism and contemporary composed percussion. Its ten pieces, which are mostly constructed around repetitive vibraphone and piano figure, are unfailingly melodic. The compositions are succinct and unmarred with sudden changes, ensuring that listeners will not be taxed or distracted over each one’s course. Nor is he going to throw you off with extended techniques; he’s quite comfortable working with the vibraphone’s familiar, dreamy zone. But while he’s not going to wear anyone out, he doesn’t talk down to anyone, either. This music communicates directly, and it feels sincere in its simplicity. Gift it to the teenaged symphonic percussionist or budding ambient listener in your life.

Around a century back, jazz progenitors King Oliver and Louis Armstrong travelled between New Orleans and Chicago, playing in both cities. While the two towns have gone on to develop jazz heritages with very different characters, a cadre of musicians has been cutting edge players from each back together in recent years. In a way, this isn’t new; the late Fred Anderson and Kidd Jordan enacted annual summits on the Velvet Lounge for years, and Jeb Bishop and Jeff Albert made the lemons of Hurricane Katrina into a sweet-sounding brew called the Lucky 7s. But guitarist Steve Marquette’s Instigation Festivals, which have taken place in both cities, have fostered a more complex combination of talents involving both cities’ avant-gardes. This quartet began as a free improv encounter involving two musicians from each city, but it turned out so well that the name of this tape became the name of a new band. Their music may build on past examples, but it’s definitely of its moment. Marquette’s resonant feedback and Anton Hatwich’s droning double bass bridge the electro-acoustic divide, and Paul Thibodeaux’s elastic beats suggest internal reverie more than second-line grooves. But it’s Aurora Nealand’s electronically processed singing and glassy tendrils of accordion that center this music within an otherworldly zone, albeit one where it’s still possible to stumble out of a late-night party in a black hole and find yourself blinking in the middle of a street party.

Junius Paul is a shit-hot Chicago jazz bassist, a frequent collaborator with Makaya McCraven, one of the younger members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and a long-time habitué of the Velvet Lounge on the South Side. On this, his first album as bandleader, he exhibits a startling versatility, switching from acoustic to electric and back, spinning into heady frenzies (“You Are Free to Choose”) and pulling back into monastic discipline in minimalist tone poems (“Bowl Hit”). Paul is not above hitting a life-affirming groove, a la the laid back skronky swagger of “Baker’s Dozen,” but he’s also not married to it, witness the smouldery bowed abstractions of “Ma and Dad.” “Spockey Chainsey Has Re-Emerged” takes up a smoking quarter of the album’s duration, Paul’s restless bass pulsing under a fever dream of wild squalls of trumpet, luminous electric keyboards and a surge and roll of drumming. There’s plenty of great bass here, for fans of that sound, but Paul’s real strength is as a band leader and composer, leading a daring group of fellow travelers — Isaiah Spencer, Justin Dillard, Rajiv Halim, and Jim Baker — towards parts unknown.

Ploughshare — Tellurian Insurgency (I, Voidhanger)

This new EP from Ploughshare curdles and oozes with ugly blackened death metal — or perhaps in this case, it’s deathy black metal? As metal subgenres and sub-subgenres (really, it’s getting Melvillean at this point…) hybridize and mutate, the community of engaged listeners and creators sometimes gets overly invested in categorization and species identification. And there’s so much to observe, out in the wild spaces of culture. To wit: For three years now, this bunch of weirdos from Canberra has been churning out songs with unpleasant titles like “The Urinary Chalice Held Aloft” and “In Offal, Salvation.” But if you can groove with the scatological wordplay, the riffs are pretty good. The record’s A-side, which includes “Abreactive Trance,” suggests that these guys (guys? no names are available) have spent some serious time listening to Deathspell Omega’s Paracletus. Let’s hope Ploughshare doesn’t share that other band’s irredeemable politics. Just what is a “Tellurian” insurgency? A fantasy of the Earthball’s primitive lifeforce striking back? More facile chest-beating about “anti-human” noise? And just how serious or cynical is the band’s appropriation of that famous image from the Book of Isaiah? Hard to say. But the guitar tone cuts more like a sword.

Omar Souleyman—Schlon (Mad Decent)

Omar Souleyman, Syria’s best known wedding singer turned global recording phenomenon (he’s made over 500 records), brings joy in a world of trouble. Souleyman hails from Ras al-Ayn in northeastern Syria, an area that has, over the last several years, been fought over by Syria, the Kurds, Isis and the Turkish Army. He’s been living in Turkey since 2011, but things are not so great there either. So, it is remarkable, in its way, that Souleyman’s latest album, a mash-up of traditional dabke, disco and techno, is so very celebratory. Rave meets traditional wedding dance in the synth-y, string-slashing “Abou Zilif,” a cut that situates a stirring, primal male-sung chorus amid a Levantine-flavored disco. “Layle” likewise moves fast and relentlessly, bursts of saz (Azad Salih) winding through thickets of multi-toned drums. It hits hard and repeatedly, and if this is what people dance to at weddings in rural Syria, hats off. I’m exhausted just sitting on the couch.

SunnO))) — Pyroclasts (Southern Lord)

Pyroclasts is one of those releases that, viewed from one angle, seems to be at best inessential. Drone metal titans SunnO))) have already given 2019, in the form of Life Metal (which, as Dusted’s Jonathan Shaw puts it, is “a record that seeks the sublime”), an extremely essential record. If you were only going to listen to one album from them this year, that one is the one to start with. This one, by contrast, is literally a collection of some of the drones that Stephen O’Malley, Greg Anderson and their various guests and compatriots would start each day in the studio with when recording Life Metal. And yet, if you take a slightly different angle on it, Pyroclasts (named for the aftereffects of volcanic eruption) starts feeling more than anything else like a product of generosity. These were literally the exercises/rituals they began each working day with to get in the right frame of mind to make Life Metal; it would be entirely understandable if they didn’t want to share them with the world. The result both suffers and benefits from the much narrowed focus compared to their big brother; it doesn’t do everything Life Metal does, but if all you want is just under 44 minutes of straightforwardly brain-frying drone, Pyroclasts is here for you.

Recent lauded efforts by Angel Bat Dawid and Damon Locks suggest that socially conscious spiritual jazz is sending a message that makes a lot of sense in 2019. If such music speaks to you, consider checking out the work of Horace Tapscott, and particularly this welcome archival find. He was a composer, bandleader and pianist based in Los Angeles who led the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra from the 1960s until his death in 1999. Inspired by big bands lead by Duke Ellington and Sun Ra but concerned with celebrating and uniting the community where he lived, he fashioned music that into an exposition and affirmation of pride in pan-African and African-American ways and culture. This live recording of his ten-piece band in performance with a similarly-sized choir named the Union of God Musicians and Artists Ascension puts a hard stop on his timeline; it was the last time he played piano in public, since the aggressive cancer that ultimately killed him would first limit him to conducting in last appearances. There’s nothing wrong with playing here; he, saxophonist Michael Session, and trombonist Phil Ranelin all essay impassioned solos over the Arkestra’s massed percussion. But it’s the voices, led by singer Dwight Tribble, that embody Tapscott’s communal commitment and articulate his cultural concerns.

TENGGER — Spiritual 2 (Beyond Beyond is Beyond)

It’s hard to create the kind of New Age-y post-kosmische psych drone that TENGGER does without having some kind of mystical angle, but the travelling musical family known as TENGGER leans into that harder than some. The mantra to focus on for this fine follow up to 2017’s recently reissued collection of harmonium, voice and synth-jams Spiritual is “if you’re looking at something, you should recognize that there is something invisible behind it”. Like most similar insights, let alone ones meant to be applied to a work of art, you’re probably going to get what you put into that one out of it, which means if you’re on TENGGER’s wavelength you probably already feel what they’re going for. Much of Spiritual 2 is fully up to the standard of its predecessor (the gently fried “See”, the suspended vocals of “Kyrie”, the softly pulsing extended length of “Wasserwellen”), but they show the most promising signs of growth when they adopt a bit of formal rigour. On the three-part dilatory experiment of “High,” “Middle” and “Low,” just subjecting the same melody to different speeds brings out something clarifying about the whole sound. You can really start to glimpse whatever invisible is behind it.

Kompakt celebrates twenty years of the Pop Ambient series with a new collection of beatless luminance featuring stalwarts Joachim Spieth, Thomas Fehlman and Markus Guentner as well as some of the lesser-known names on the label’s roster.

Thore Pfeiffer’s “Urquell” — an acoustic guitar over an unobtrusive bed of synths and scratchy strings — sets the mood for the subsequent 85 minutes. Tracks float by lulling the listener into a state between dreams and catatonia. Good then that Maria Estrella reminds us to breathe on Morgan Wurde’s “Laesst Los,” a quite lovely track built on string beds, treated whispers and Estrella’s gentle instructions. The only vaguely unsettling moments come during Fehlman’s “Liebesperlen” with its lysergic take on deep house. NZ based composer Andrew Thomas rounds off the collection with two short pieces of atmospheric piano based contemporary minimalism that veer into Max Richter territory and are all the better for it. Pop Ambient 2020 is a warm bath; comfortable and enveloping without the depths to threaten, it passes by with few demands, diffident to the point of vanishing. Perfect for the next session in a hyperbaric chamber or MRI where at least there are whirrs and clicks to keep you alert.

Winds of Egotism — Winds of Egotism (Death’s Radiance)

When Plato wrote his cave allegory, he couldn’t have Winds of Egotism in mind, yet his allegory became a reality with the band’s self-titled album. The band members haven’t left the cave and instead smuggled the gear in (even the country of origin is undisclosed). The resulting music raw, monotonic and unpretentious enough to be mistaken for drone. The guitar excavates sounds so primitive that it sounds more like an echo from the cave walls than a guitar. Couldn’t they ask Satan for better equipment? This EP is 17 minutes long total, just two short untitled tracks, with no audible difference between them. If true black metal is music that which doesn’t sound like black metal, then this is it. Plato or no Plato.

4,5 years of Gotham in my life♥

Wow my emotions these last days. I’m not much of a text poster on this site but when Gotham ended I really felt I wanted to write this!

Gotham has been a huge part of my life for so long now. 4 years and 7 months since the first episode aired, that’s some time gosh. And so much has happened during this journey! I just wanna mention some memorable things during these years. Like remember the pre-s02x09 excitement?? And other stuffs, ah here we go!

The first trailer made me SO EXCITE, I had wanted more batman villains content for years since I have always found the batman villains squad so interesting and good and unique characters, there is so much to explore here! And so the Gotham trailer came and I just OH MY GOD this is exactly what I want!! And so it started and it was amazing. My first love was Ed, it took him his first scene in ep1 to make me go totally THIS IS MY FAV! More eps went on and I required more Ed content. But then Oswald slowly grew on me kinda out of nowhere like I wasn’t expecting it. And when amazing ep7 aired it just hit down on me from the sky, like it does when I know I got a new obsession/fandom. Oswald’s amazing scenes in ep7 and I went ”Okay this is it, I’M DEEP INTO THIS NOW AND I LOVE IT!”. In exactly THIS↓ scene/moment I basically said those words out loud and realized this is my life now, ugh also one of my fav looks I miss the bangs:

Shortly after ep7 I started shipping Nygmobblepot, since we knew who these characters were and who they will end up being it made SO much sense in this show, they were like the two familiar main villains in kinda the same age and I also loved them both so I mean it was obvious for me. Man in the beginning we were so very few in the shipping Nygmob pond, in the OCEAN of Gobblepot. It was a bit of a struggle sometimes, ppl wrote hate on my Nygmob posts n stuff shrug. And I just didn’t get how not more ppl could see it? It would make more sense if this were new characters like they hadn’t even met but since we knew this is Riddler and Penguin it just was fate for them to cross paths soon enough! We needed Nygmob content! I started making tons of my own AU:s since if the show wouldn’t give us content I would do it.

BUT we had Robin & Cory with us! Reminder that Cory invented the shipname after 5 minutes and Robin & Cory’s amazing twitter activity during s1 especially I will always remember as a fav. Remember when they we’re so into roleplaying Nygmob and spoke how Ed & Os loved each other and all sorts of things. All about going to The Foxglove together and stuff. Ugh it was amazing, I miss their interactions.

In this very smol pond is when one day my shining star @conscience-killer (aka okimi79) approached me, with this ♥ ”Sometimes I feel we’re the only Nygmobblepot shippers in the world…well apart from Robin and Cory. We should have a secret handshake or something.”

And man did we get a secret handshake! Gosh MY DEAR OKIMI! That I up til this day since then has spoken with like everyday for 4,5 years, you are amazing ♥ And in that time of so few shippers it felt even more special, to have someone else out there as obsessed as me. I’m so grateful we found each other at exactly that time and we’ve been through so much on this journey ♥.

When Nygmob in spring finally had their first scene it was so amazing and I have no idea how many times I have watched that scene to this day, and also with that the ship grew a bit yas!!

Let’s jump forward a bit. NYC Comic Con 2015 in fall, one of my fav Robin & Cory cons/interview times! Because the legendary ep 2x9 was soon upon us and OMG remember how excite they were in those interviews!?! And THEN, that fkn night THE episode aired. I couldn’t believe it was real, it was EVERYTHING we had dreamed of!!! SO MUCH NYGMOB CONTENT and so in character and gosh. Man their season 2 relationship is just so beautiful and I love it til this day and 2x9 is forever my favorite episode because it meant EVERYTHING for us shippers and more people also started seeing the connection between Nygmob and so more ppl started to make content and join in!

A time after another shining star came into my life, @constant-sinner (aka (riddlelvr) ♥ This amazing person and artist! And together with her and okimi I am part of the best trash family of three and I can’t believe I’ve been a mom (yet i’m the youngest but i’m fashion fur coat mom okay) to these trash sinners for like 4 years. ♥

Okay but remember all INSANE SMAYLOR CONTENT BEFORE SEASON 3!!? Man that was also one of the best times I had during these years. God they were so excite for their relationship in s3 and WEREN’T WE ALL! And omg Comic Con. I had my fkn header for 3 years soon lol, man that moment I remember seeing the signing booth stream all casual and Robin & Cory goes “Smaaylor!! Nygmobblepot!!! ;))” And I’m just wait WHUT omg. Their press tours with Sean is something I’ll miss even more than the episodes, always such a joy seeing those three together!

And when season 3 started it was just insane. To be honest how their relationship grew in s3 that’s how I expected it to grow after their meeting in s1, it made sense already back then. Ed admiring Oswald and sneaking to his club and Oswald would be a huge part of Ed’s journey to become the Riddler but ah well, I did my best with my AU:s back then!

And then s3 came and Gotham EXPLODED and I had no idea where all million ppl suddenly came from lol. It became huge. But since it still feels kinda close to this day (2,5 yrs though man), my most nostalgic feels will always be over s1-2 so I’m not gonna write so much about the season 3-5 times in this text. My closest to heart milestones is during the first years and now that I’ve seen all episodes I still think season 1 is the best overall, except the lack of Nygmob content ofc ;)

I’ve not just felt love for the show ofc, the show isn’t perfect. There has been serious flaws and bad writing and plot drops. Tbh s4 I just felt so NOPE about? 22 eps of waste…Like Ed’s plot for example like he barley had his own plot what happened? And we also have the q*eerbait Nygmob issue obviously. I have also felt the show has been a bit childish being -helloo- GOTHAM city we’re talking about? I think it would have been much better off with a MA-rating tbh to properly tell certain stories. After s4 though I’m glad in s5 Nygmob finally got some proper screen time being together and in character!! Like that’s how their relationship should have been from beginning of season 4, or season 1 if u ask me lol but ya know!

BUT I LOVE THIS SHOW, the amazing actors and characters and scenery and costumes!! Ed, Oswald, Robin & Cory will ofc always have the most special place in my heart ♥ The Nygmob journey in the show has meant so much to me to follow it from day one and I never knew how much this show would mean to me when I started back in the day.

This show. And not just the show itself but my journey and life around it!!? So much has happened. For one example I had made a bit of gifs before but Gotham really got me into gif making, and it’s been a joy sharing content and my Nygmob AU will always be among my most fun things I’ve done, it was like if they ain’t gonna give us enough content I WILL. It’s a fun way of gif making to manip scenes to create something new! And today I still enjoy making gifs, as you probably know heh. Thanks so much for all nice comments and reblogs through all these years ya’ll!! It warms my heart and I love to read reblog tags!

I have been at con and got to meet Robin, enjoyed so many interviews and promos, chatted with wonderful people. Every Friday night I have been up in my Europe timezone at 2am to live watch the show, the workdays after has been a bit of a struggle of being tired with going to bed like 5am lol but man it’s been so nice to follow it when it airs!

Watching together with my dearest @conscience-killer and @constant-sinner . Two of the best that happened to me during these years. These two people that I’ve spoken with like everyday for 4 years! Through Gotham finding two of my dearest friends in my life. Watching the show together and screaming, crying, laughing during this journey, about not just the show but EVERYTHING in life. They also are amazing writers and artists ♥ And also helped me endless times with gif caption when my non-native brain trying to write gif captions at 3am after the episode lol. All my love to you both ♥

THANKS TO ALL AMAZING PEOPLE that impacted me over these years. The cast and nice fandom people! My dearest @conscience-killer and @constant-sinner. And I also wanna mention dear @millicentcordelia and @selene-volturo that are amazing ppl that have been here with me since the very beginning of season 1. And they have always been so down to earth even during the stormiest periods of this show’s existence ♥ I’m so glad we’ve shared this LONG journey!

And also hugs to my dear mutual fandom friends that I’ve shared hours of conversations with over the years. Some of us maybe don’t speak as much nowadays and some of us have gone separate ways with new interests but I hope you know who you all are, regardless if we spoke yesterday or 2015. You have made my fandom time a joy!

I’m actually okay with the show ending now you know. Ofc it’s a bit sad but as I said I felt s4 was kinda stomping around in the same spot and even s5 had some fillers like they didn’t have more to do to push the story forward? The last ep was a nice easter egg wrap up for this LONG journey. And I mean shows live on with fan content, and who knows maybe it will return somehow? But it feels good they told us it would end so I was prepared for this and to say ”goodbye”. But it’s not goodbye because content will continue on this site and I’ll continue re-enjoy this show!

This is 4,5 years. In 2 pages, I could prob write 20 but ah, but i felt I got to to summary the most important things for me over these years ♥. This show and stuff that came with it will always be such a big part of my life, ALL LOVE AND HUGS!

overall case context: video game addiction in east asia has started entering the public spotlight over the past twenty years, after multiple deaths associated with gaming addiction (all the links are different, for those of you that want to read more). over the course of their negotiations, he yunfei mentions a few things — namely, ranked, pay-to-win games that prey on addicted players’ time and money. if you’re familiar with video games, you can probably think of a few yourself. it’s been a growing topic of discussion over the past few years, unfortunately, and this case reflects that.

My bts map of the soul: persona thoughts

(hi hello morning me here this is 2am word vomit that I didnt proofread so dont judge me too hard)

Intro: persona: YES YES YES YES I loved this so much please bight give us all rap line intros I would loose my SHIT. Namjoon killed it and really when you read the lyrics theyre so self aware and talk about the whole “but namjoon” bullshit and what fame does to human identity and I LOVED it. Rap is one of the main genres I listen to outside of kpop so ,, the rap line always slays me and honestly without a cypher in love yourself I feel like this was the perfect mood 8/10

Boy with love: I. LOVE. IT. Im not gonna lie, I didnt really like their last 2 comebacks and I was a little scared as to what this one would sound like and it was great! The one thing I was concerned with was the autotune they put on jimin’s voice on the first bit and yoongis rap. What tf was happening in that first half. the mv was beautiful and I loved how they incorporated the best parts of love yourself era with the dna sounding track and the idol mv aesthetic (fake love didnt have much influence but its ok as a song) 8/10

mikrokosmos: what the fuck is this spelling? I get its supposed to be like microcosmos like tiny universe but why K’s? It makes it so hard to read. Anyways little erant over those opening chords really reminded me of twenty one pilots. I wasn’t a huge fan of the vocal line’s verses here but the CHORUS sounded like a waterparks bside (or just a bside from another soft punk pop/alt band) with that lil guitar and it was AM A Z I N G oh my GOD I actually love rock and pop punk and stuff like that a lot it was everything I listened to for a long time and so little things that remind me of my favorite bands really send me a whole ass nostalgia blast. Some of it was a little weird but it recovered so 6/10

Make it right: its a song I guess. They really tried to do the whole minimalistic thing but it didn’t work. the verses were ok but I still expected some build, and by the rap verses it sounded wrong because they were so energetic and great over this honestly tired quiet little song. It didn’t sound finished. I can appreciate the choruses got a little more each time ( or maybe thats just my ears) but yeah 3/10 boring dont reccomend

HOME: my gay ass read this as homo the first time ngl. Anyways this is dare I say it the best bside on the whole album it was so catchy all the way through and just so NICE sounding I loved it. The rap verses were ,,,,, amazing ???? 8.5/10 (yes I ranked it above the title track what about it)

Jamais vu: the superior sad song. Its sad but still a bop and when that little “remedyyyy” kicked in I was SHOOKETH. The little snare kicked in and I knew there was gonna be a beat drop and I was READY and they did NOT disappoint! I loved the amount of hobi in this track the chorus was os catchy especially after the build when there was a little more behind the vocals and I loved ittt 7/10 good song

Dionysus: that intro kicked and I got immediate racounteurs vibes and iw as READY and then they returned to their og rap style I was like !!! This is the lost cypher my guys !!!! But then the song started for real. I didn’t appreciate the autotune and honestly it wouldve been better if it really was just the rap line. The beat felt like it needed more raw vocals and less of this autotune, especially with the guitars. Also the actual rap line verses could’ve been better in the first half. That said this was definitely Yoongi’s best verse on the whole album and it was QUITE good. I wasn’t a fan of the chorus it sounded like a shitty anime opening ngl. as a last song on the album? I feel like they could’ve done better. This is the impression youre leaving your audience with and it could’ve been stronger. Tbh I think it totally could’ve been reworked and put higher up and jambs vu would make a great closing track but thats just personal opinion. 5/10

Concluding thoughts: I really love this! If theyre following lys format (which I think they are) then im excited for a longer release next time but as it stands I think this was pretty solid! Steven has spoiled us all. I didn’t like it that much, but friends convinced me to watch it and it’s very cute and endearing, and the season finale was almost perfect! I don’t really like engaging with the fandom, so I never read theories about it, and I’ve been happy about it. Everything has been surprising and very delightful experience.

Yeah, as for Star... I did see Tomstar happening after Jarco became a thing, as to make Marco jealous. Classic trope. I just never expected it to last for so long, get so much screentime to the point Marco got sidelined, and the whole romantic triangle to get more focus than the main plot when we all knew that it was going to end. The ones who didn’t know, well, good you remained oblivious until the very last second, lol. I did not particularly like the first half of season 4, as it seemed it lacked a bit of focus. There were certain episodes which were very interesting, but others not so much. All those “Tom learns to let got” episodes took too much time. LHF was... just to make us feel bad about Tom, tbh, and for people to say he “deserved” more. Not sure a lot of people understand that characters, all characters but secondary characters especially, are plot-devices, by definition. Not sure why anyone thought Tom would be given more importance than Marco, when Marco was the male main character from the very first episode.

This is actually sound writing advice: if you want two characters to eventually get together, start hinting it from their first meeting and develop it from then.

They’ve been in full movement since the half of last year, but their true purpose has yet to be revealed. One of them is Rad Museum’s ‘Scene’, which brought a new impact on the R&B scene, and the other one is producer 2xxx!’s first EP ‘life’. Firstly, let’s take a look Scene. As the title suggests, each song recalls a different scene. Different genres were added to the point in time and vibe of a scene. This album is a compilation, like in a movie, of conversations between the Club Eskimo members about their daily lives, particularly the ones participating in each song’s creative process. Making use of daily sounds such as a doorknob, they create, in a natural way, sound results for both the songs and their interludes. As these sounds are veryquotidian, a message of living itself is conveyed.In that manner, different aspects and scenes of life are transmitted and many people can relate to it. Although it’s questionable whether the albums actually had any profound impact, both Rad Museum and 2xxx! showed themselves to be visibly trustworthy through them.

The two pieces mentioned weren’t just results os the capacity of each artist. We’ve gone over this already, but most songs were created from collaborations between you.will.knovv members. They already worked together before revealing themselves as you.will.knovv, and because of that you can feel a solid chemistry, synergy coming from many of their songs. One of the most publicly acclaimed songs with the participation of youwillknovv is “Instagram”, which took Dean to the top of the charts at the end of last year. In the credits, a different name appears; “HighHopes” is a group that consists of MISO, checkparren and 2xxx!. The name also appears in DEAN’s “넘어와” (come over), Suran’s "1+1=0” and various titles in the competition Show Me The Money 6. In Jusén’s case, in Scene, his participation had as much importance as that of 2xxx!. Of course since there aren’t many results of you.will.knovv as a whole, we can’t say much about its synergy. A Microchip PIC based USB sound card

INTRODUCTION

The idea for creating a USB sound card based on a PIC came from discussions of other people creating one on the Microchip USB forum. The hardware of the card is based on all Microchip products. The software uses a modified version of the Microchip USB framework which is interrupt driven instead of the traditional polling. The device is a USB composite device. The first device is an implementation of the USB Audio 1.0 interface and the other device is a custom interface based on a HID interface. The purpose of the custom interface is for programming the device serial number, upgrading the firmware, and in the future any other configuration that isn’t supported directly by USB Audio 1.0. In a previous version, WinHTTP was oringally used. After testing the card for awhile, I decided it's better to not require drivers for the card especially since the HID/WinUSB interface is rarely used.

The sound card runs at a sample rate of 48KHz, 32KHz or 24KHz selectable by the OS with 12 bits per sample. The quality approaches commercial grade as the sample rate is higher then CDs. 44.1KHz was not implemented due to the difficultly and additional processing overhead. The sample rates that were implemented are all a multiple of the 1ms USB frame meaning each frame sends the same amount of data. 44.1KHz requires the card to handle different amounts of data each frame requiring more advanced buffering and synchronization techniques and more processing power. Microsoft Windows automatically resamples the 44.1KHz audio found on CDs to 48KHz.

The hardware for the sound card is based on the Microchip PIC18F2550 USB processor. The processor is clocked at 48MHz which is the maximum rate for this processor and is also a multiple of the audio sample rate. The microcontroller is connected via the SPI port to duel Microchip MCP4822 12bit D/A converters. Volume control is implemented by the Microchip MCP41010 variable res-- ders are controlled via SPI by the microcontroller via a dedicated bit-banged SPI port. The purpose of using a separate port is so that volume control can run inside the processor at a different priority level then sample output. The Microchip MCP6022 op-amp is used as an output driver.

The MCP6022 op-amp has an output drive capacity large enough to power a pair of cheap headphones without much distortion. The resistance of my headphones is approximately 25ohms. The op-amps are not powerful enough to drive speakers which are usually 8 or 4 ohms. The MCP41010 and MCP6022 can output near rail to rail voltage although some nonlinear effects can be heard if the volume is too loud or the signal is near the minimum or maximum. Since USB has a single rail 5V power supply, the sound card only uses a positive rail instead of a traditional duel rail system which is how standard 16bit PCM is encoded. As a result, the signal needs to be biased in software to 2.5V.

One terminal of the MCP41010 is connected to the signal for that channel and the other terminal is connected to the midpoint or bias voltage. Previous versions of this sound card connected the second terminal to GND. The advantage of connecting the terminal to the bias is that as the volume is changed, the signal grows or shrinks around the midpoint rather then shifting toward GND. The signal is kept as far away from the rails as possible.

SOFTWARE

The software for USB Audio Streamer is composed of several components. These are the audio card firmware, a C++ library that wraps HID and WinUSB, and a command line utility for flashing. I am giving out the source code as a learning tool for other people. I don’t care what you do with it but I am not responsible for any damage that might happen from using it. NOTE: Improper use of hardware or software may cause serious injury or death.:)

I use Visual Studio 2005 Professional but I have heard that the project will build with Visual Studio Express. To build the project it is necessary to download the latest version of the WDK to get the headers and library files for HID and WinUSB. The default directories in Visual studio need to be modified to point to the directories of these resources in the WDK. If you use Visual Studio Express it's necessary to recreate all the project files and change the default calling convention to _stdcall.

Source Code Modules

A trick is used when building the sound card firmware since it is two separate projects that need to be merged together. Build the boot directory first, which is the code responsible for upgrading the firmware. Then build the sound card firmware itself. Before flashing, goto Configure/Settings/Program Loading and clear the option to clear program memory upon loading a new program. After the sound card firmware is build, goto file/import and import the hex file for the boot loader. The two projects will be merged together without any cutting and pasting. At this point, it is OK to flash the PIC. Note the bootloader is only necessary for flashing firmwares without a ICD/Pickit. When debugging actual card functionality, it's ok to leave out the bootloader. This Requires no modifications to the sounce or linker scripts. Simply don't merge the boot loader into the image

SOUND CARD FIRMWARE

The sound card firmware is based on a modified version of the Microchip USB framework. The framework has been collapsed into a single source file with callbacks between the framework and the main code. The framework( in my case it’s more of a library ) has been modified to use interrupts instead of the traditional polling method. Instead of calling USBDriverService in a loop, this function is called whenever the USB interrupt fires. The library is response for handling control requests on endpoint 0. The framework handles standard USB requests and the body code is responsible for handling class specific USB requests nonstandard requests. The body code is responsible for handling I/O on all other endpoints.

USB Audio Streamer is a composite device of a USB Audio 1.0 device and a custom HID interface. With USB Audio 1.0 all of the sample data is transferred through a separate endpoint then control requests. Control requests such as controlling volume is through endpoint 0(the control endpoint.) HID uses it’s own endpoint. Since each function of the card has a separate endpoint, each of the functions can be implemented at a different priority level without preemption problems. The PIC18F2550 has two interrupt priorities plus the main handler. This gives a total of three priorities. Since playing sound data is the most critical function it was given the highest priority. Next comes control endpoint requests which include the standard requests plus Audio 1.0 requests. Since these functions have relatively low timeouts, these were assigned low priority. HID functions are in the main body code because actions such as querying the firmware version, settings the serial number, or flashing the firmware are not time critical at all.

CORE AUDIO

The low priority interrupt handler performs two functions. The first is to check the ISO endpoint through the SIE for data. If data is available the buffer is passed to the high priority interupt code and next buffer that makes up a cicular queue is returned to the SIE. The buffers are in the USB ram of the PIC so that the data is not copied between buffers. In Audio 1.0, the host always sends exactly the number of samples to fit in a frame which is 196, 128 or 96 bytes depending on the sample rate used.

The second function of the low priority interrupt handler is SOF(start of frame) processing. Upon receiving the SOF, the PIC changes the current play buffer to the next available buffer and starts timer 2 which is the sample clock. Timer 2 is always reset on the SOF to keep the sample clock synchronized when clock drift is present. If the SOF occurs before the current buffer is played, playback is changed to the next buffer. If the SOF occurs after the buffer is finished, the last sample is stretch. Since the clock drift is normally small, most of the time samples are not dropped. The time of the last sample is slightly different. This is not noticeable in the audio and is only barely noticeable when playing SIN waves.

The high priority interrupt is driven off timer 2 and has the function of formating the data in the format required by the converter and loading the D/A converter through the SPI port of the PIC. The samples are converted from 16 bits signed PCM to 12 bit unsigned and the endianess is swapped. After the buffer is finished, timer 2 is stopped so that if the clock of the card is ahead of the host, the last sample is stretched.

AUDIO 1.0 REQUESTS

All Audio 1.0 requests are handled via an extension of the USB framework. The low priority interrupt calls USBDriverService which services the control request. If the request is a standard USB request, the request is handled by the framework. If it isn't, the framework calls back into the main code which examines the request. If the request is recognized, the main code claims the request. If the request is a read request, the main body sets the address of a variable to sent to the host. If it's a write request, a variable is written to but the firmware sets a completion routine to be called at the end of the request.

The card only handles two types of requests which are volume control and sample rate selection. The current value of both of these is stored in a global variable. If the volume is adjusted, new values are loaded into the variable resistors. If the sampling rate is adjusted, a new period is loaded into PR2 for timer 2.

HID REQUESTS AND HOST SOFTWARE

The main body code polls endpoint 1 for custom requests in a loop. If the request is anything other then setting the serial or flashing the firmware, the request is handled in the main body code. Otherwise, the processor is put into a special programming mode. Upon entering this mode, all interrupts are disabled and the USB library is used in the traditional polling mode as program memory blocks are moved from the host. Flashing the microcontroller is reusable code that is used for multiple projects.

The host side consists of a C++ library that wraps HID and a command line C utility for configuring the card. These utilities are used for multiple projects and will be discussed in a separate topic.

TESTING 123...

The USB Audio Streamer uses instrumentation grade analog components so frequency response is not a major concern. The main concern is noise and signal accuracy due to nonlinear properties of the components, jitter, and that the sample clock can drift from the USB SOF clock.

To measure the accuracy, I used Audicity to play 20 second sin tones of various frequencies and recorded the output on a Dell laptop with a built-in 24bit 96KHz Sigmatel sound card. The assumption is that the 24bit sound card is much better then the USB hardware. The output was recorded with Audicity and the spectrum of the signal plotted. The idea is that perfect hardware would have a single peak at the tone’s frequency and nothing elsewhere. The experiment was performed with both the USB Audio Streamer and a commercial 16 bit USB sound card the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage. In all cases, a 48KHz sample rate was used. In the follow graphs, the Audio Streamer is on the left and the Turtle Beach is on the right.

Cards With Sound

As can be seen, the accuracy of both devices decreases as the tone’s frequency is increased. Up to about 12KHz, both devices have approximately the same noise floor. At 12KHz though, the Audio Streamer’s performance begins to rapidly diminish. Both devices are isosynchronous adaptive, but apparently the Turtle Beach has better drift control algorithms. At 20KHz, even the Turtle Beach has noise of -40dB which is not that good. It seems that designing a high quality USB audio device is very difficult even for commercial developers.
