i cant express how much i love the good witch. like its been a hot minute since ive connected to an album as viscerally as this one but what i want to talk abt is how deeply femininity is integrated in this album. like usually artists have stand-alone feminist songs (e.g. The Man) but not only is this sentiment so consistent in the good witch it's also so well developed? and it's something I find so relatable in my everyday life yes I am struggling but first and foremost I am a GIRL struggling and idk if its just me but its smth i feel is so hardwired into my DNA. and the way maisie peters discusses the experience of being a girl in 1) romantic relationships (body better, yjab(aiktm), lost the breakup etc, even there it goes) 2) relationships with the world (there it goes, history of man) like man it just feels so very healing. anyways stream the good witch deluxe

I'm absolutely floored by Maisie's ability to address the fact that women are not the problem in such a poetic way. In History of Man when she's talking about the consistency throughout history of women being blamed for shit with "Samson blamed Delilah, but given half the chance, I would have made him weaker, too." And obviously the classic example, "The men start wars, yet Troy hates Helen." And here she is with "Yoko never broke up that band."

We have Wendy, a song where she actively tried to rewrite a narrative, but at the end of the day, it still has the same result because it goes, "I'll lock the window and turn on the AC, you'll throw your rocks and you'll scream that you hate me."

Which, again, brings us back to "I've tried to rewrite it, but I can't." You can never change the fact that women are always going to be held responsible, even when it's not their fault.

And honestly, she might not be able to rewrite this narrative, but she can sure as shit make sure the stories are getting told.
