chris and cathy’s refusal to seriously punish bart is so telling. the most they do - putting him in the attic for a few hours - is more a trauma gut reaction than anything and they both hate themselves for even having that option. everything going on points to bart possibly being a little murderer, but they keep giving him love and the benefit of the doubt, which is something corrine, olivia and malcolm definitely would never have done.
#mystuff#if there be thorns#flowers in the attic#the dollanganger series#they don't know what's going on#and they're right that bart is not truly in control of himself#and he isn't the one going around torturing and killing animals#it's most definitely john amos#that line early in the book when a bird or something is dead or some other small animal#and bart's like#oh great if htey think i killed this they're never gonna let it down lol#he doesn't have a lot of self-awareness but there's always a part of him that connects going too far#but his imagination and now belief's (nurtured by john amos and malcolm ugh) are so powerful that it gets overrided#BUT CHRIS AND CATHY STILL REFUSE TO PUNISH HIM#AND KEEP LOVING HIM AND INSISTING HE'S THEIRS AND HELPING HIM#it doesn't help that bart starts to seriously want to murder cindy lol but i digres
