How each class copes with their dark urges
Barbarian
You really, really, really need to hit something
A barrel, a sack of flour, a precious vase, it doesn’t matter
As long as you can wreck shit and bloody your knuckles you’re happy
And so you take your dark rage out on things
Things can’t care. Things can’t die
Bard
You sit in secluded beauty, by the river, under the stars, within the trees, wherever you fancy
And you play
Your melody drifts through the breeze, a lilting and melancholic tune
A potential lover lingers out of view, listening quietly
For now, the music thrums through your soul and drowns out the darkness
Cleric
You pray in the dead of night
Tears fall in your lap as you bow your head
Can they forgive such a wretched soul as yours? Can they even hear you? Do you even deserve it?
Something warm and holy bristles against your skin like a breeze on a sunny day or a gentle hand grazing your cheek
You are on the right path, you need only keep believing
Druid
You need to be alone, away in nature, amongst the flora and fauna
Perhaps you change form and hunt, sating the predator within you for a few hours of malevolent sport
Perhaps you conjure a minor tempest above you and wail at the whirling sky, unheard as wind and rain pelt you from all sides
Or perhaps you dig your feet into the dirt and grow beauty all around you, tethering yourself to something more pure than blood
Fighter
You’re up at the crack of dawn to get a workout in
Today you’ll run along the river’s edge, tomorrow you’ll do pull ups in the trees
Some of your companions find your commitment annoying, others endearing
Each day you break a new personal record
If you can push past aching muscles and pumping lungs, you can push past the nightmarish thoughts that wake you each morning in the first place
Monk
Blood pounds in your skull and you breathe in, deeply and fully
The pounding slows, you breathe out
Arms extend upwards, stretching tense muscles
You extend a leg and lean forward, breathing in again
You focus on the steady beat of your heart
For the first time your mind is silent
For the first time you are at peace
Paladin
You repeat your tenets to yourself like a mantra
Every time your mind slips into darkness, you whisper your oath and take a deep breath
It grounds you in the things you truly believe and reminds you of who you are
Or at least, who you strive to become
Ranger
You had formed a fast bond with both Scratch and the owlbear cub
One morning, you awake from a nightmare with them on either side of you
Scratch lays atop your torso, his head resting on your chest as he watches you while the cub nudges your arm
The softness and warmth of your animal companions slows your frantic heart
Right now, right here, you are safe
Rogue
Some might call it being a kleptomaniac
You call it being enterprising
Any apprehension from your companions ceased when they realized how expensive healing potions can be in times of war
A necklace here, a coin purse there, nothing anyone would miss too dearly
The rush is much the same, even if it doesn’t satisfy in the right way
Better a stolen item than a stolen life
Sorcerer
You find an open clearing or an empty room, somewhere away from prying eyes
You breath slowly and extend your arms, feeling for the weave
It’s tangible and potent, seeping into your skin and flowing through your bloodstream
It crackles on your fingertips and, with natural precision, you release it
Beautiful spells dance around you as you speak them into existence
You may be a maker of death, but you are also a maker of wonder
Warlock
You decide to call upon your benefactor, a risky decision depending on your contract
But with risk comes reward, you hope
If you play your cards right, you can get something from them
Maybe they have information on the nature of your affliction
Maybe they can shield you from the endless onslaught of unspeakable desires
At this point, you’d do almost anything to gain some control over this evil within you
Wizard
You drown yourself in study, poring over the same texts again and again
Exciting discoveries and notes of inquiry distract from thoughts of death and gore
You speak of these magical musings to your companions, either talking at them or engaging them in debate, depending on who lends their ear
Either way, they are relieved to see you smiling about something

Has anyone heard of a community-driven free-to-play narrative browser game called Blood in Baldur's Gate? It's set 15 years before the start of the Baldur's Gate 3. The reason I ask is because I have a headcanon of my own involving two certain characters. It will contain a spoiler if you haven't seen it. If you don't want to know because you don't want to be spoiled, then don't read.
Spoiler Warning
Ok the in the ending The Dark Urge is the culprit of the serial killings and killed the Detective at the end. What's odd is that the detective name is Tav. Is Tav in Baldur's Gate 3 and Tav in Blood in Baldur's Gate the same person? You know how in Dragon Age: Origins you pick what race and background you want for your Warden and the ones you don't pick end up dead (like if you pick a Mage Warden, non-warden Coulsland, Tabris, Mahariel, Brosca, and Aeducan end up dead), Is it like the same for Tav and The Dark Urge? Like the reason they can't be on the same group together. Like Tav is killed in Blood in Baldur's Gate and The Dark Urge can be the leader in Bladur's Gate 3, but if you pick Tav as a leader then The Dark Urge is killed by Orin (You can find his corpse in Orin's quarters when you get to the Temple of Bhaal.)?
Or do you think both Tavs are not the same person and Tav is a common name?
Headcanon-wise I would think the Amnesia!Dark Urge took Tav's name as his own (Dark Urge as a name is a mouthful and terrible) and maybe the Dream Protector's custom form is based on Detective!Tav's appearance. Because maybe Detective!Tav can stands out to the Dark Urge because they amuse them for trying to catch them persistently. Even after The Dark Urge killed Detective!Tav and lost their memories, echos of the memories of Detective!Tav (like the name and the Dream Detective's custom appearance) live on even if Amnesia!Dark Urge doesn't understand it.
Did the Dark Urge even have a name before? I mean they are basically a clone born from Bhaal's own blood instead of being made through procreation. So no mother, I think. Since they're basically Bhaal's clone, Why did Bhaal choose a Dragonborn as the Dark Urge's race (Dragonborn is The Dark Urge's 'default/Canon' race)?
I'm getting a little off topic... Sorry. Anyway what do you think?

Gale: So, Bhaal created you from his own, dead flesh . . .
Durge: So I'm told.
Gale: So, presumably you look nothing like him - as a child might a parent.
Durge: Correct.
Gale: So, then, what made him decide to make you so attractive?
Durge: Perhaps he thought it would arouse less suspicion.
Gale: Yes, well, it aroused something else entirely, didn't it.

Im of the full (possibly delusional) belief that Durge is not the species that they physically appear to be.
You’re telling me this being crafted from nothing but bhaal’s flesh and his blood - this demigod - is actually a dragonborn/tiefling/human/elf/etc.
No. This thing is bhaal’s flesh and it just happens to look like that. They’re an imitation of a species, they’re not truly a (full)mortal being, they have no heritage aside from bhaal.
As a result I’m sure there’s some…oddities.
For example, a demigod child, not fully mortal. I doubt they adhere to the lifespan of whatever species they look like. Looking younger than they should. (less so perhaps with long lived races like elfs and half-elves where that is par for the course).
A dragonborn durge that by all accounts looks like a blue dragonborn but their breathweapon is acid. A tiefling durge that seems to be a Mephistopheles tiefling but they cannot cast mage hand, instead smiting like a zariel bloodline tiefling.
An elf or tiefling durge that doesn’t read as fey or infernal trough identification spells. Because they aren’t either of those things. Perhaps they could read as divine but not quite.
Members of a race that durge is supposed to be looking at them and sometimes when making eye contact they read as wrong. And some kind of uncanny effect triggers in their brain.
Give me more freaky durge who isn’t really what they appear to be at all. Just a little murder demigod crafted from dead god flesh to be the shape of something else.

Rolan: You know, if you ever get tired of adventuring, you could always come work at Sorcerous Sundries.
Durge: I don't think retail is the right career for me. My rancid blood desires nothing more than to reap death on this world. I am a vile soul, broken beyond repair.
Rolan: Sounds like an average Tuesday around here... We do have an annual employee picnic, though.
Durge: Does that help to soothe the unyielding rage within?
Rolan: *Sad sigh.* No.

If Durge Could Recruit Gortash Headcanons:
Once agreeing to ally with Gortash, Durge can convince him to join the party, but only if they agree to kill Raphael. If Karlach is in the party, this may be done in exchange for Gortash to fix her heart if Durge can pass the persuasion roll on Karlach.
• Upon joining the party, Gortash shows up in a more practical armor set, still gold and black but not as decorated as his robe. There’s scrapes and dents on parts of it, clearly having been worn before. Durge can ask him about it in conversation and discover he has chosen to wear the same armor as he did when they robbed Mephistopheles Vault. He never repaired it and can tell a story for each scratch.
• He does a lot to try to jog Durge’s memories, and it works a some degree. We hear little stories around the city, some more suggestive than others.
• Old habits never die. He’s constantly touching Durge, always walks next to them, has a lot of strong opinions but will only concede to Durge.
• Durge persuasion rolls on Gortash are DC10 and under. Anyone else it’s DC30.
• He absolutely compliments Durge a little too much. And he’s always the first at Durge’s side after the fighting ends. Grumbles if he has to rez anyone else but dotes on Durge.
• Gets along well enough with Astarion, Shadowheart, and Laezel. Respects Minthara and Gale, sees them both as potential allies if they know their places. Absolute bitch to Wyll. Actively the number one Ravengard hater.
• If Durge can convince Karlach to stick around, she will only be in the same party as Gortash once or twice. She’ll confront Durge about it after and either has to be kept separate or leaves the party.
• If taken to Astarion and Shadowhearts’ personal quests, he’ll be surprisingly respectful, and will tell them they’d make good Banites, particularly if Shadowheart resists Shar. (Kinda think he would tell Astarion not to Ascend but for his own advantage of not having to deal with an Ascended Vampire and not wanting the hells to gain power from 7,000 souls)
• Random gifts pop up in Durge’s inventory. He says nothing about them. One is definitely the hand of an enemy.
• When in the House of Hope, Gortash will only allow Durge to enter the prison with him until the warden is dead. He’ll tell them everything, but won’t let the others see it.
• Killing Raphael is very emotional. He’s proud, happy, relieved, but being there shakes him up. Durge can hug him in private when they talk about it.
• If Durge chooses to save Hope, she tries to hug ‘little Enver, all grown up’ before they leave. He does not like it, but part of him is happy to see her free.
• Durgetash romance can initiate after Raphael is dead. Sceleritas is so fuckin' pissed. Like, he kinda ships it, but he CANNOT handle Durge getting labotomized again for this Banite fool.
• He has random little personal quests and pop-up events like his formal coronation celebration ball, taking Durge to a fancy dinner, dealing with fans, and assassinating a rude journalist who called him not-so-young-and-handsome.
• If taken to Lady Jannath's estate, she flirts with him. Durge has an option to stab her for this- just once. Just a little. She'll be fine! Gortash approves. He apologizes to her, but he's absolutely into it.
• His two allied pathways at the end are to remain fully evil and control the brain/Faerun with Durge or absolutely still be, ya know, Gortash but destroy the brain and become archduke without the tadpoles' help as he’s now viewed as the city’s hero. This is his least evil option and requires a Durge romance or at least a Durge that will remain by his side regardless and saving Hope as pivotal moments.
• Durge's alliance or resistance of Bhaal would significantly influence this. Resisting Bhaal lowers the DC on any persuasion. Failing the duel with Orin would block any option except controlling the brain with Gortash as he sees it as the only way to protect Durge. Because controlling the absolute would offer them a large enough following to grant them literal ascension to godhood, freeing Durge from Bhaal's control. Plus, you know killing a god would only inflate Gortash's ego more, and that would be his new goal.

Durgetash fluff!
I wanted to just do some doodles of them but it turned out into unconventional ways they'd take care of eachother - such as drugging your insomniac partner to make sure they get some rest, or threatening violence if your equally insomniac partner refuses to stop tinkering with his machines at 4am, or just holding them underwater to wash blood from their murder cult activities off of them.
Partner obviously meaning a business partner. Obviously.

i think the thing that really gets me about pre-canon durge is their absolute sense of duty, and their utter isolation outside of the cult of bhaal.
most of the cultists seem eager to see durge upon their return, and one even says they were the first to feed him flesh. gortash tells them of an exhibition of a bhaalspawn's corpse and another bhaalspawn's creations and durge immediately plans to attack the hall of wonder to recover them. they then apparently entrust said bhaalspawn's corpse to sceleritas fel to "restore" through taxidermy. they deride orin for her artistry with corpses explicitly because "bhaal will never care" and because orin "[does] not understand lord bhaal".
even their infamous prayer for forgiveness is framed around their absolute submission to bhaal's plans, and the crime that requires forgiveness? admiring his rival's chosen. that's one line, and the next three paragraphs are swearing to carry out his plan exactly as they've been told to, all for his forgiveness.
hell, even their room reinforces this. orin has barely touched the place aside from installing her mother's corpse and her manifesto - and that is some of the only decoration. what was it before orin, an empty room with skulls, a bed, a desk, some chests and a wardrobe?
the durge didn't have any semblance of a life outside of bhaal, aside from gortash. and is it any surprise? the only other hint they ever had a life outside of the cult is the flashback of kid durge murdering their adopted family, all thanks to their father's urging.
bhaal even tries to force them back into isolation after they've been tadpoled by forcing them to kill alfira, and then trying to force a durge who resists him to kill their lover. if they continue resisting, bhaal kills them. bhaal will not allow them to have a life outside of him and, if it weren't for jergal, he would've succeeded.

obsessed with the idea of someone attacking gortash while durge and the rest of the party are there and Durge and Gortash just immediately falling back into covering for each other. They know the other's blind spots, they know exactly what the other will do, where to stand to be out of their way, all of it. It's easy as breathing. Durge knows when Gortash is feinting, Gortash knows exactly how to line up enemies for Durge to hit them with a spell while keeping himself out of the way. It's natural. It's instinctual. Because Durge doesn't remember him, but their body does

Don't mind me. I'm constantly thinking of an au where Mr. Astarion "You're only the first person who I truly care for" Ancunín actually shows more emotion at durge's death than what we get in-game. I can understand why the limitations, but that doesn't mean I have to accept them at such a crucial point of durge's story. I mean, it doesn't even have to be overly sappy, but I want that Dorian Pavus "I knew you would break my heart, you bloody bastard" type of energy. I want that cold chill of realization to be felt the second Astarion hears durge's heart stop. Give me that moment where he's on his knees, shaking durge's lifeless body, cradling them against him as he rocks them back and forth, shaking his head in denial as each sob grows more intense until it's just a constant scream of "noNoNO!!!" Because the gods never dared to help him before. Of course it would be a god that robs him of his love now.
Give me that point when the Emperor tries to command Astarion to take the Netherstones and leave, only for Astarion to tell it to shut the fuck up because he's not leaving without them.
Give me that broken whisper of, "We were supposed to be free. Together." as he is faced with the fact that they're not coming back.

When Durge wakes Astarion on the night they're supposed to kill him, he just smiles and asks if they're looking for a cuddle.
It's so casual, so natural-- it's not the first time. And now I can't stop thinking about all the other times.
Durge waking from another nightmare, slipping into Astarion's tent so they don't have to be alone with their thoughts.
Astarion doesn't need to lay down to trance, some nights when he is sitting up and trancing, Durge curls in his lap and he pets their head. Somewhat aware of their presence and what they need.
Post-feeding cuddles.
Tangling their legs together, holding each other close as if they could fuse into one being.
Astarion little spooning to a Durge of all sizes, it feels comfy and safe on nights he needs to.

*One night at camp.*
Gale: Surprise camp safety drill, everyone! Cultists of the Absolute are attacking, what do you do? Go!
Astarion: Gods below, not this nonsense again.
Gale: Time is wasting, people! What are you doing?
Lae'zel: Chk! I am going to bed. I will not waste my time with hypothetical pondering.
Gale: Alright, Lae'zel has taken an arrow to the face and is dead. Next person!
Astarion: I don't know, I do what any reasonable person would do. I stab them!
Gale: Wrong. They began their attack with archers and you are shot through with arrows before you can get near them. Astarion is dead. Next!
Wyll: Can't Shadowheart just heal them?
Gale: Shadowheart, would you like to heal Lae'zel and Astarion?
Shadowheart: *Considers.* Nah.
Lae'zel: *From her tent.* K'chakhi!
Astarion: I stab Shadowheart.
Gale: The two of you don't get opinions. You're dead. The cultists are now inside camp, what are the rest of you doing?
Durge: I cast fireball.
Gale: You cast fireball...on the camp?
Durge: Well, first I make sure that Scratch and the owlbear cub are at a safe distance, but yeah. I cast fireball.
Gale: Okay. The camp goes up in flames. The cultists are dead, but so are your companions.
Durge: Wonderful. I go to bed and have the most restful and uninterrupted sleep that my broken mind can remember.
*Lae'zel approves.*
