yesterday i spent 45 minutes of my life watching a video essay criticising the use of cheap shock values and crossing of taboos for a video game and i went from "he has a point even if he's explaining it in a really inflammatory way" to "oh umm... i can see how he thinks that way even if i don't agree" to "oh this guy's just straight up using people on tumblr as material for an audience to get mad at like other outdated people on the internet. nvm he's just an asshole"

I'll give you the broad strokes; it's fun as heck but the script is just begging for a second pass. There is such a lovely core to the movie but it fumbles in finding a thematic throughline within its numerous metaphors (love, parenthood, inner vs outer strength, purpose, faith) and ends up having some textually compelling payoffs for things it never sets up. It's funny because usually my issue with modern flicks are their shallow setups with no clarity or payoff, yet here it's the opposite. It gives glimpses into its thematic goal and does some heavy-lifting in the back end, but its catharses are a bit too left-field to stick their landings. Example without spoiling anything: the "real" meaning of the film's subtitle is a nice touch, but it also is a massive character choice that was never properly implied or baked into their psychology/wants and expressed/reinforced throughout. It just jigsaw clicks itself as an answer to a previously expressed frustration, which mechanically might work, but due to a lack of proper setup it ends up feeling merely cute instead of truly meaningful.

It's just stuff like this. There's a cool movie about love in here that would be much easier to dial in than many other similar blockbusters, it just would need more time in the oven. I don't think it has a problem with humor as others have stated - it finds glee in undercutting most of its plot but never the story it attempts to tell, like I don't remember a single joke in the entire eternity sequence? and it's nice how it elevated children and committed to some truly outlandish metaphors like the stormbreaker being jealous thing. but again, none of these threads tied neatly enough into a single thematic throughline that would inform the major character choice in the end, even if it did happen and was dramatized and scored to kingdom come. which brings me back to what I said at the start.

It seems like every time I talk about movies on here I go setups and payoffs, lads. Screw those in nice and tight and everything else will take care of itself

i’m still not talking about the game i’m playing and obsessing over (sorry, one look at the fandom means it’s typically the type of games i don’t want to connect with people over unless they’re people i already trust) but i’m laughing so hard 

because, there’s one chara i was obsessing over so hard that when i found his figurine in the manga store i somewhat bought it right away while i was still very early in the game, and i knew people hates this chara because of something he did later in game (i’m calling, betrayal and murders) and i had vague spoilers about what his deal was about but i couldn’t completely put those spoilers back in context

so there was a moment of fear of, was buying the figurine a good idea? would i finish the game thinking his crimes are too much for me to bear? (i mean i do have figurines for characters i don’t really like so i doubt i would really resent the buy since it’s a pretty figurine, but yaknow?)

But now i’m at a point where, they didn’t reveal what his deal is yet, but i have most of the pieces to know more or less what his crime is, and most of all, he’s currently lying extremely blatantly to everyone while going very 😇 about it (lies i only can totally figure out because of the spoilers i know), and i’m absolutely hysterical because it actually makes him even more my type than he was at the start of the game where he just seemed cheeky yaknow?

i was told everywhere this character’s twist is enough to have people hate him and instead the more i’m building to the twist the more i’m absolutely hysterical because he’s taking all the steps to be an Ultimate Fav Of Mine by checking all the boxes for my dubious fav character type (Sweet Talker, Criminal, and Massive Hypocrite Liar). I’m living. 

reading posts where people are giving permission for everyone to read old fics is so wild 2 me bc i have never once stopped to consider when a fic is written. half the time i dont even look at the posted date for fics. never in my mind has consideration about when a fic was written stopped me from commenting or dropping kudos on a fic. yall really over here inventing things to be worried about online, huh. i have enough anxiety in real life, i don’t need to make up more reasons to be anxious online.

Oh god. Oh god man. The way I was NOT expecting to be hit with the found family trope so hard and I got absolutely SMACKED anyways... WHEW. MAD that the hype is pretty well deserved.
