when i wrote the pinned post for this blog i settled on "a common throughline in Shit What I Like is understanding how and why systems work" bc i hadn't yet listened to Well There's Your Problem, a podcast with slides about engineering disasters and systemic failures, and "OSHA aficionado" is shorter but less snappy than "WTYPP fan". anyway when i think "chemical spill" i do not generally think "hand sanitizer spill", and when i think "how do i get rid of all this unsellable poorly made hand sanitizer made in the early days of the pandemic" i do not immediately leap to "well i'll just dump pallets in this parking lot and warehouse and surely it won't spill and/or explode bc hand sanitizer is a product that makes you safer".

watching this was a unexpectedly funny experience bc i recognized one of the backing instrumentals as a previous tuesdaypost song, which kind of felt like solving a mystery book on chapter three bc u knew an obscure fact about eels. this documentary came out in nov 22 and the song was one of this past feb's tuesdaysongs so i can only assume the spike in popularity from the documentary propelled it onto my discover weekly playlist??? the internet is a series of algorithmic tubes &tc
this is a tremendous work, as a documentary/history/archival effort/piece of art. it made me tear up. there's a very lovely sequence about memory and legacy that got me thinking a lot again about how i would like to be remembered. ive rewritten this section four times, when usually i don't redraft the tuesdaypost much at all. boils down to: complex and weird topic to talk about as an orphan, i am reluctant to be any more emotionally vulnerable than i absolutely have to during this time of great cross-country change and moving upheaval.
i appreciated how this was not tearjerker webby bait, which would have made it feel very hollow and embittered me even more during a week i am already predisposed to hate humanity. instead, mr perjurer is simply very good at his job (being an ethical documentarian)

one game i really loved and one game i really hated, so it goes.
despite religiously downloading the epic store free game of the week bc i have a reminder written in my planner, i never fucking remember to actually look at what i have in that library.
ABZÛ genuinely healed my heart during a very unpleasant weekend.
i don't use this as a recs platform except for this one time when i am cashing in all my chips. go play ABZÛ, it takes like an hour and a half.
all you need to know about it you can get from the cover art. it is not a hard game and it is not a horror game. i went in totally blind and the less you know about this game the better. i was delighted nearly every minute. every time i saw an ammonite i felt like i was seeing an old friend. there are SO many clever game design choices i want to talk about. message me after you play this. i said "of COURSE IT WAS AUSTIN FUCKING WINTORY ON THE SCORE" during the credits. what an absolutely goddamn perfect little jewel of a game.
AGAIN: go play ABZÛ.

i also played Call of the Sea, bc it was in my epic library and i wanted something fast and oceanic to continue the high of ABZÛ.
Call of the Sea did not continue the high of ABZÛ. i think this team carefully and thoughtfully sidestepped several of the usual issues is making something Lovecraftian but fell into the rest of the pits. eg i liked that they had Polynesian culture consultants, but from an interview it seemed like it was limited to a one-day crash course? i am deeply grateful this isn't a dead-wife game and the female protagonist has a great deal of agency, but she's still a rich white lady from boston trekking about the Tahitian islands commenting on primitive structures, which made me suck air in through my teeth at many points. there is an "ancient slave culture" thread that never actually resolves. i really wish it resolved. the game overall is in a very weird place, trapped between the norms and mores of the early 40s and the 2020s. you have Got to commit to one or the other.
the overall vibe is very polished for a first game. general vibes are Firewatch but puzzle-adventure. the lighting is a little too dynamic and was very distracting throughout. due to this studio's age (new) and odd location (spain) and how their debut game came out (took a year and a half to make, debuted on gamepass) i understand why this game exists the way it does from a marketing and industry standpoint and why they favored visual polish and art style over everything else. it's still annoying bc it is so close to an interesting game.

I don't talk a lot about my girls sooo, since I finally had the time to really listen to all the singles & albums out, I decided to make a little ranking of the whole thing. I have to say that, even if some are ranked 'low', I still listen to every of these songs once in a while with lot of pride filling my heart. I'm glad they are still able to shine despite every that happened.

23 - Sensitive (ENG VER) by Loossemble : like 'Star/Voice', in my ears this song is totally different from the korean one except that this time I really have a hard time with the english translation of this one. This is the only reason I put it so low.
22 - Air Force One by Odd Eye Circle : I was obsessed with the MV but that's it. The song stay in my mind but slip away as fast as it came. Love the different effects they put on their voice during the prechorus tho.
21 - Hitchiker by CHUU : It suits Chuu so much but I'm not a fan of the chorus.
20 - Strawberry Soda by Loossemble
19 - Sensitive by Loossemble : Before the solos of Chuu & HeeJin, it was my fav title track but now I listen to it not as much.
18 - Howl by CHUU : The only reason it is this low is because I saw the teasers for it and I thought it was going to be a song with a 'Halloween' vibe. But now it has grown on me quite a bit.

Don't bait the SoRiku shippers, you guys. LOL Makes the very next scene of Sora and Kairi holding hands seem hollow. I came across Refik while I was watching YouTube and the videos of his artwork immediately captured my interest. His projects consist of data-driven machine learning algorithms that create abstract, dream-alike environments. His work reminds me of the flow of liquids even tho most of his work is not directly related to liquids.

Topic of observation. And if you can read that and make slight sense of it, not get mad, and find the humor in it, you're killing it.
My statement was made to be sarcastic, and, ironic, which isn't the right word by definition, but it's the hipster adjective I'd use, cause it's easier than actually establishing the reality of similarity in trend patterns.
But.
I'm going to. It's ironic to think about things and discuss them, though, being articulate is kind of the opposite of what you'd expect, right?
Let me start. I hadn't heard of Bauhaus before the other night, but probably had heard this song and maybe some of their others with out realizing. I was fucking all about it, though, after listening to it.

You got me stoked on a classic tune, at the goddamn chart, that's just cryptic vocals, a simple bass line, little to no song structure, and prominent focus on random sounds that only make sense if you've don't acid or were born off and don't need to.
I loved It. It kinda reminds me of Bowie in a sense of how ahead it was, but you know, Bowie made good music and didn't have to break up the band, and they covered Bowie about the year his music should have came out, and broke up.
Bowie influenced them, according to Wikipedia, as well as the general Bowie influence truth.
I digress.
My point is. They had a great sound. Similar and certainly influenced by music of that time and yet unique enough to..
Be famous? To...I guess their hipster fan base then, which still probably made more money than being talented now, some almost 40 years later..a small minority knows who the fuck they are.Maybe. But they influenced a wide fucking mass of ears that do so now.
When you are doing something new, it's an experiment. It doesn't how far you vary from the already documented. You're testing, in this case sounds.
3/4 of the current rock music I listen to was influenced by this group, it's influences, or a an influenced group.
I'm gonna get down to the fucking point of this.
Bela..sounds like this.
Xo tour life sounds like this.

But like. All your friends are dead when you turn 30, the studies say..because you can't discover new music..
Insert a rap beat that samples more shoe gazing notes of any bauhaus...
Music was so much better 60 years ago. Or 50. Or 40. Or even like 30, I mean there was good shit in the 90s. The 2000s sucked for music.. until I heard good music and not just radio. At like age 10... and like 2010s still great.
But it was never as good as it was, and that's the narrative I get, from old souls in ancient temples or fresh tombs, to young souls building new temples and buried in old tombs.
Music was never better. Your ears tell you what's good. What's good, is subjective. It's art. It doesn't cap out, it evolves, and it's easy to conclude that the simplicity yet nuance of it stops when you want it to.
Lil uzi will never be bauhaus, but every rock band influenced by them won't be, either. They won't ever be Bowie, and no one will ever be the doors. Lil uzi will never be Wu, or Pac, or flash. And no rapper will be the same funk the music was born from, or the jazz it all started as.
On to another point.
Rock has this luxury of evolution and inherent disqualification. There are bands who do what their influences did, but better. And yeah. You can tell me that there's no good new rock music, but you can also make an easy disqualification from the genre to anything that you don't think fits. You won't listen to new, and what you choose to hear is quick to become pop in general, If it doesn't fit.
That twang, tho. That solo, tho. That breakdown. That drop.
Music. Rock and fucking roll. It’s not about the effect of one person, one critic. It’s about the effect on the whole crowd.
We now have algorithms that demonstrate connections, patterns, influences: evolution.
Music is ageless if you watch it grow. And it’s always timeless when you’re stuck in an era.
Sounding different, sounding classic, sounding ironic or comedic, these are revolutionary notes.
I’d be dead if it wasn’t for music. Some people have died creating it. Respect the variation. We all have differing appreciation.

Queens Do Queen Ish: Jill Scott & Erykah Badu's Verzuz 'Battle' Saw 6 Million People, And It Was The Sexy, Shea Butter, Sage Burning, Soul Cleansing We Needed
Our edges are greased, scalp is slathered, body shea buttered, soul cleansed and saged, and our shots have been shot in the exes' DMs. Erykah Badu - straight from Texas - and Jill Scott - live from her Tennessee getaway - had us like that on Mother's Day Eve, and it all paid off to the tune of 6 Million people watching their Verzuz battle. Get it inside.
Leave it to the ladies to have a (mostly) tech issue-free and completely mutually supportive Verzuz "battle" that wasn't a battle at all. And if it was, we, the viewers, won that ish.
We had candles lit, wine on deck and we're sure folks were partaking in other ish all night too.
Instagram changed their rules for Live, likely because of events like Verzuz that have been bringing in tons of viewers and shaking up their algorithm This go round, there was no 1 hour time limit (like a 3 hour limit instead) and the room wasn't capped at 500K like before during Babyface and Teddy Riley's battle.
The largest amount of folks that were in the Live at once was close to 800,000, and according to Swizz Beatz, the creator of Verzuz, that equates to about 6 million people coming in and out all night.

The ladies went track for track - and if you're fans of them even the deep cuts they played are your ish - and gave us all the life we need it. A WHOLE entire vibe.
They gave us the inside info about why they both rocked "You Got Me," which Jill wrote before she got on and Erykah picked up and sang the hell out of it. Jill ended up performing it for the first time ever because Erykah was late for a concert, so she had to stand in for her.
The ladies also reminded folks they NEVER had beef with one another, despite media saying otherwise. It was definitely all love, and they even had their kids all in the mix singing each other's tracks.

I was tagged by @phd-mama whomst I am pretty sure has a direct throughline to my soul so I doubt this will make her know me BETTER but I crave a distraction!
Last song: I just looked at my spotify and it’s Blinded by Emmit Fenn and I was like, “who?” but that’s very on brand for me because my music listening is an enormous ramble through predictive algorithms themed around “moody music to think about quitting your job to,” lately. I’ve been listening to a lot of WAR*HALL when I actually pick my music tho, and Moon Taxi
Last movie: I watched American Animals with my wife and let me tell you, it’s a black comedy and a bit of a hard watch re: toxic masculinity and people making destructive choices but I was on the edge of my seat, recommend
Currently watching: It’s embarrassing how much I’m currently watching. Bridgerton, Community (a rewatch), New Girl, I’m inching through finishing Schitt’s Creek (I don’t want it to end), Tiny Pretty Things, Riverdale, literally any home renovation show I can get my hands on, Bling Empire, Designated Survivor (It’s!!! So!!!! Dumb!!! I!!! Love!!! It!!!!), Star Trek Discovery, Sex Education, Star Trek TNG (occasionally)...can you tell tv is like, my main comfort drug
Currently reading: I started Angel of the Crows but really did not like it. I just started the Obsidian Tower and I am also comfort re-reading The Girl With All The Gifts because parts of it inspired parts of my recent x-men fic so I am reminding myself of that as I am a little sad about nearly being done with that fic! I am reading this book for work called Indigenous Statistics that’s pretty cool.
Currently craving: To feel at peace at work (currently, every morning I feel very panicky and it’s not an inaccurate thing bc every day something truly shitty happens to me tbqh :[ ), to think that maybe somewhere somebody cares about education. A good complicated statistics solution that I came up with and got to share with somebody. A hug from my mom, the way she holds my hand when we watch star trek (I’m gonna cry!-- actually that too, I kind of crave a good cry), a long cold surf on a hot day, a train ride into somewhere new, a chocolate lava cake that is somehow simultaneously dangerously hot and also I can faceplant into it????? (I have no explanation, these are my stress fantasies) a really good almond croissant from this old local bakery that just Closed Due To Pandemic (UGH), an immensely late night sultry dance with a stranger in a random blues fusion dance convention, and the endorphin rush of finishing a fic (almost there!!!!)
