i hate this post wheneveri see it sorry lol i can smell the supersessionism. ‘there’s an old jewish story’ yep because judaism is just a quirky abstract reminiscence to help u fix the brokenness of ur own religion and not like a completely different religion with its own theology and philosophy unrelated to urs. there are no people it belongs to or thinkers it produces there is simply an ‘old story’ which you can now insert ur own very specific cultural understandings and theological baggage onto without wondering what the person who said that actually meant by it and if theywould enjoy u using it 2 talk about the guy who invented antisemitism n was forced down their throats for the next 2000 years

what are some of your fab four religion headcanons? it’s super fun to think about that in a universe with at least two canon deities and how people react to the proof so to speak of those existing
great question!! i have a thought of thoughts abt this (wonder why lmao) and also i am in love with you for asking :D /p
(also holy shit this turned out way longer than i thought it would ghgdhdgh)
first off, most people in the city are not religious. bli heavily discourages any and all religious practices and has been in the process of trying to erase all evidence/memory of religion for decades. religion's one of the many things that becomes more common (secretly practiced) the further from city center you get, which is why some of the biggest believers in the city are actually the droids living in the lobby. their graffiti bible detailing the eventual rise of destroya and defeat of bli is the most widespread religious text in the city, though thats not to say some families and individuals havent held on to their own and passed down their own beliefs in secret. destroya is just the most common name to be heard in whispered conversations about salvation, and as such destroya is the first godlike figure party and kobra ever hear of
party learns about destroya as right as that first real spark of rebellion is staring to grow in them and they stop taking the pills. they start hanging out in the more "dangerous" parts of town and talking with droids and neutrals and juviees on supply runs, and they start learning about this mystical figure whose supposed to come save them- save them *all*- and it gives them their first real and true feeling hope hope. its what inspires them to get out of the city, and while life in the zones makes them turn resentful of the idea for a time, i think once they find the girl something just clicks in their mind, and they realize that the stories were real and this kid is special and shes gonna be the one to save them and for the first time in years they feel that same spark of hope
party's relationship with the witch though,,,,, yes okay fine its a lot of me heavily projecting on them again. that should be expected by now tbh. they get out there and they learn about the witch and they hear all these believers talking about how she loves them and she cares for them and she takes care of them and guides them after death. and party just fucking hates the idea of that, that theres some all powerful deity out there who loves them but refuses to help. they do think she's real, they've died and come back enough times and felt the universe shift around them to know that shes out there. but all they can feel for her is bitter contempt. stealing a quote from my own fic here (which is largely abt party's relationship with the witch/death) "Of course I think she’s real, but I don’t believe in a damn thing she does.” they are angry and they blame her for a lot of the things theyre angry for and they hate the fact that theres a part of themself that feels the urge to pray whenever things get really really bad
kobra's stance on both deities is a lot more neutral. he is an idiot who looooves to tempt fate and taunt death, and so he figures theres gotta be something looking out for him since he hasnt actually died yet when he really really should've. still, he doesnt really believe in destroya or the witch all that much. he grew up with party relaying promises about destroya to him as bedtimes stories, but since they were both still kids it all came across to him as a more mythical, comic book-esque character than anything. he finds it hard to put his faith into something that seems to fictionalized. with the witch, on the other hand, his feelings started off a bit more like party's- a lot of anger and spite and disbelief. but then he meets cherri who is so in tune with the witch, who so wholeheartedly believes in and loves and worships her. kobra loves listening to cherri talk, and the passion in her voice when she talks about the witch especially is enough for kobra to think that maybe, sometimes, he does believe in her just a bit. at the very least he believes in cherri- maybe he worships her and her poetry more than anything and maybe thats not a bad thing
out of the fab four jet and ghoul i typically see as the most religious, having grown up in the desert, the witch was always a big part of their lives. jet especially, prays a lot and looks for signs/omens like feathers. both always have at least one strand of badluck beads on them, but ghoul i think is a bit more superstitious. he needs to have his mask on him or within sight at all times- its bad lock to lose track of it, it means death is looking for you. he doesnt like to go outside for at least a day after it rains- acid rain or not. one of his old crewmates used to tell him that rainfall was the tears of a grieving universe, and even now he thinks its only right that he give the world a day to bask in its grief before he intrudes on it again. both jet and ghoul obviously are quick to collect masks in the aftermath of a fight, whether its one they were in or one they stumbled upon. but where jet prays for safe passage while collecting the masks, ghoul counts the bodies- different numbers of dead being different omens of good or bad fortune. they both always light the candles at the mailboxes when dropping off masks to let the witch know where to find the lost souls. jet leaves strands of beads and painted rocks as an offerings, while ghoul leaves offerings of food and words hed never speak to anyone else (to share a secret is to bare your true soul to someone, and there is no greater offering for the witch, he was taught)

Ok some more mayhem thoughts
I rlly love donnies contribution isnt being a super genius thats such a departure its refreshing his contribution is essentially galaxy quest the redux
Idg the person saying disputing the line abt raphs rage problem like yeah saying you dream of fighting us indictive of like a rage issue bc like the fervor at which he said it plus when we saw him fight? Literally kept beating on the dude after he gave information
Im not thinking too hard abt how age w the mutants work bc the movie told me not too but i do think its interesting. Like having the movie itself make a distinction tht scuddlebutt is an adult and i guess if Superfly was the oldest he was too? Neway we didnt have a chance of old man yuri sadly bc baxter is probably dead but idk i think itd be fun if he's brought back
I enjoy the move past the overgeneralizing mystic east backstory and just having them been created from lab ooze, this is the first splinter w no connection to japan (im counting the ninjitsu book in the 2014 movie) which is interesting n i was so right abt tht lol like splinter being cast as jackie chan caused such uproar n just like when tony shaloub was cast i was right to not raise angry pitchforks. Also wrt seth rogen n bebop the mutants were nvr human so i think its fine tht hes got a white va now n also bebop doesnt even speak. Genghis frog only has a few less lines than him. Rocksteady felt mute lol
I loved the ending i loved the way this depicted nyc. the idea of actual new yorkers seeing them at first n thinking they were times squares performers. The way that they too fought against Superfly? I love the Alvin and the chipmunks situation the boys have especially idk in todays ~climate~ the idea of people banding together against a common enemy is cool i loved everyone being cool with the turtles
Like the narrative choice of 'oh actually when you do the hard thing n put urself out there you'll find ppl wholl help you be connected' very cute.
Overall it felt like such a culmination of all that's come before and i rlly hope we see Superfly and cynthia Utrom again

so greg showed up in the SG discord yesteday and answered a bunch of questions, so i decided to compile them into one post and post it on tumblr! i hope i didnt miss anything
long post and major pyre spoilers under the cut!
“I don't like to pick favorites among the cast since they're all my babies really but Volfred was vital to me and I'm glad he turned out OK for you. One of my favorite characters I've had a chance to write. I feel like 100% of the time that guy A) betrays you or B) dies, and I was like... no.”
greg said the original nightwings (brighton, erisa, human oralech) were never designed visually, and one of the last details they managed to squeeze in where their portraits.
i asked if this was the case for moira and he said that’s one of the moments he didnt want to tooltip the name as to not overburden the moment with more information, and that they tried tooltipping some terms but sometimes it just felt worse, like with howlers. (i assume harp talons were also not tooltipped for this reason)
erisa was branded for her patricide, and the brand is under her headband. when i pointed out hedwyn has a headband too greg just said “He sure does! I thought about scenes where he might remove it but those never happened.” the implication is that branding is reserved for particularly heinous crimes, but so is exile, mostly.
“Erisa would have been considered a nomad at least up until her crime; I think she would have then been branded 'evil' as opposed to mentally ill in some way.”
greg said that hes glad the option for a gender neutral reader made a difference, and that it felt important to establish that in the world of the game you are accepted as you are, since the player character more directly represents the player than in bastion or transistor.
“I'm super interested in this idea of 'voice vs. action' I think, looking back at the stories of our games. The sliding scale of 'all talk' and 'all action' and how different people fit on that…”
you dont have the option to not be a revolutionary, but can still resist against that idea by throwing all your matches.
lendels nomad teammates are replaced by demons at some point and the implication is they became them. they have similar names before and after (vispa/vispaleth and darben/darbenfor)
most of the demons we see most likely changed their name: ‘ignarius dropped his given name as is sometimes the custom’
“The exact mechanics of the Archjustice's ability to communicate with you aren't fully revealed/explained but presumably he has some ability to hear what's happening. It's implied that the raiments and books are important to that process.”
the crones ghost antlers are meant to be suggestive of their power and connection to mystical arts.
“Yeah I've seen some criticism that there's no 'Commonwealth stays in power' version of the ending but to me that would have seemed disingenuous to the rest of the story, really. It's the end of an age, and the Commonwealth's time is up -- just a question of how.”
humans have a shorter life expectancy than harps, and for some reasons are the only ones who turn into demons.
about how harps do stuff, they use their feet where it isnt too weird or else swoop things around, but “Jen is resistant to being locked into real-world logic / physics / etc. when designing characters.”
the choice to shave or keep rukeys mustache came from members of the team arguing about whether he should have it or not. its one of the oldest survivng scenes in the story. greg likes the mustache and thinks he looks plain without it and that it helps his personality immediately come across.
one of the tempers team members is yowlson, who shares a name with rukeys uncle. whether its a common cur name or actually his uncle is up to the player to decide.
“consil ta videas” means “until we are free” and is first said by hedwyn and jodi after the first rite vs the accusers.
the highwing remnants are implied to be a matriarchal society thats few in numbers now.
about where oralech got his raiments and sigil, “For the raiments, he did fall... maybe he turned his inside-out? For the sigil, maybe he had it fashioned, or found it at the base of the mountain, even. It's not clear where those came from originally. Consider this speculation rather than canon.”
the ambiguity of celeste and tariqs designs is on purpose, and theyre meant to feel like maybe they arent exactly human.
greg prefers not to answer to what extent tariq and celeste are human. “I think it's way better for someone to think 'they're like angels' and someone else to think 'they're the sun and the moon' and someone else to think 'they're sort of like elves' or whatever else than for there to be a correct answer and for those people to be wrong.”
“I think the songs are meant to feel in-world, but it's less clear with something like Thrash Pack. We liked including the minstrel versions of those tracks to give them a clearer in-world counterpart.”
its implied that the archjustice is connected to the nightwings specifically, and that the other triumvirates may have their own patrons but it isnt made clear.
not all triumvirates have access to all raiments, like the pyrehearts who are implied to be wyrm-only.
sandra can address the others directly during their trials, but its implied the beyonder crystal is only for the reader to mess with.
greg considers falcon ron being The Most Annoying Character Ever as a mission accomplished :D
the library at the end is suggested to be the restored library in the sahrian union, after the laws banning literacy were repealed.
about the literacy ban, “They would have probably been pretty intense about it. Turn in your books / printed materials. Signs taken down, etc., all by a certain date. I think they would have promoted the change of law pretty effectively.”
the ban started several centuries after the commonwealth formed and after the stamping press was invented. volfred was very young in sap terms when it happened. “There's a reference to Archjustice Androbeles IV (as opposed to IX), whose tooltip reads, 'The grand judge who, in 617 A.S., issued a decree prohibiting literacy, in answer to growing unrest.'”
“Just because something is banned / illegal doesn't mean ruling powers don't have access to it.”
hedwyn is pretty critical of food options in the downside, and likes cooking more than he likes one dish in particular. “He's this accomodating guy. I think for him the pleasure is in finding the right dish for the right guest.”
demonification starts to reverse after liberation after a few months/years as opposed to the decade or so it takes to start. and “you would have to be pretty tough to become a demon, just by virtue of living/suriviving in that environment long enough for it to happen. Then it makes you even tougher.”
it was essential to the game that the rites would be nonlethal in nature, and that the players could pick themselves up after defeat and have to deal with the loss. erisas story was important to establishing what would happen if violence did erupt.
“Erisa was likely straight-up stronger than Oralech. Blacksmith's daughter vs. doctor, I'd bet on the blacksmith. And, sounds like it was a cheap shot anyway. Oralech had his back turned or something like that.”
“Tariq seems pretty inconspicuous but likely you don't live that long in the Downside if you can't take care of yourself. Not to say he goes punching people out when you're not looking....”
greg avoided having characters that were too hard to write because he couldnt really afford to get stuck on anybody, but the one he ended up revising the most towards the end was pamitha. not in any major way but balancing her aloofness was important. there were some versions of pamitha that were a mix of aloof and vulnerable that made players not care for her or get what shes about.
greg likes the versions of the ending where you lose to oralech but accept his mercy (or vice versa), and versions where both oralech and volfred are liberated, though theyre “difficult to achieve”.
about the option to manipulate oralech, “Yeah, I don't have data on this but suspect very few players go that route... I like that it's there, though, to let you do one final desperate act if that's where your instincts or curiousity leads you. You even have the option to back out of it if you do choose it.”
its implied that demons cant have children.
i jokingly asked a bastion question about Why Are Lunkheads So Fucking Scary to which greg replied “A frog wearing a stone helmet is inherently scary. That fast, shallow jump.... You know, a real reason might be that their jump isn't on a specific timing, i.e. there's some variance. So they're inherently a bit unpredictable, which probably makes them scarier / more disconcerting.”
