On Dieter, Goya's Black Paintings, and Pedro on Talk Art 

Alright y'all, it's Saturday evening, I have nothing better to do (I actually do but I don't feel like it), so welcome to my mini TED Talk about 'how to pay too much fucking attention to the Pedro cinematic universe'. None of this is new, and maybe everybody already knew about this, but I didn't... so here's a nerdy tangent courtesy of googling/wikipedia-ing.

I was reading a Dieter!fic (this one right here by @chaoticgeminate - go read her writing!) earlier today, which refers to the 'Saturn Devouring His Son' painting - that giant mural Dieter is working on in The Bubble:

The original 'Saturn' by Goya

The fic mentioned its part of 'The Black Paintings', so I got curious and started googling. I'm no art major or expert, so please allow me to just paraphraze the Wikipedia page. 'Saturn' is part of a group of 14 Goya paintings that are called Pinturas Negras/The Black Paintings. They "portray intense, haunting themes, reflective of both his fear of insanity and his bleak outlook on humanity" --this was late in Goya's life, and was connected to several illnesses he had experienced (and the fear of relapsing) and political turmoil in Spain at the time (post-Napolean war, changing Spanish government, etc.

Trivia fact 1: Goya actually made these paintings right on the walls of the Quinta del Sordo (so-called Deaf Man's villa) where he was staying -- so I love that Apatow had Dieter also paint right on the walls.

Trivia fact 2: while Goya was living in this villa, he actually became gravely ill (again) - not by a pandemic obviously, but it's hard to not link that loosely to the COVID period. He had never intended for these 'Black Paintings' to become public; "these paintings are as close to being hermetically private as any that have ever been produced in the history of Western art" (the murals were eventually transfered to canvas by other folks once he had moved out of the villa). Switching back to The Bubble -- I love how the tragic influence of Goya's illness(es) and art/things 'made at home away from the world, not intended for an audience' (so obviously, in a bubble) has that connection to the COVID experience and how many folks were suddenly homebound, along with the burden of illness in many ways (lord knows this all did a serious number on our mental health). In the movie, Dieter and the others do not want to go into isolation again, but that solitude is what eventually led him to painting on the walls in his room. This is not a 'grand discovery' of any kind, but I got a kick out of the parellels once I read up on it - and honestly makes me appreciate the movie a bit more, haha.

Not happy about another quarantine period.

Alright, more hyperfocusing after the cut:

Some googling led me to a post from last year by @nicolethered (gifs in this post are hers), and she included screencaps of the walls of Dieter's room (during that drug scene), which I hadn't even noticed while watching the movie. Upon taking a closer look, I noticed they're outtakes from other pieces of Goya's Black Paintings! I thought that was really cool, they sure worked on the details with that set (there's one more that's shown in a different shot but I can't exactly figure out which outtake that is):

First one is a mirror image from Two Old Men Eating Soup and the second one is basically Satan aka 'The Great He-Goat' from the Witches' Sabbath painting. Which IMO makes for fucking hilarious perfection a.k.a. trivia fact 3 -- because we all know about Dieter and his little emotional support goat, LOL. Excellent connection.

Anywaaay there's more. The Bubble was shot during Feb 22, 2021 to April 16, 2021, right? Pedro has spoken about how his input in shaping Dieter was mostly regarding his outfits (the Crocs, the robe, etc). But then I suddenly remember the Talk Art interview he had done in 2018, and how he namechecks 'The Dog' by Goya - and lo, guess which painting is actually part of the 14 Black Paintings? Yeap - the dog! So I checked the podcast and he was asked, 'if you could be any painting, what painting would you be?' by Russell. Here is the painting, and below it is what he said on Talk Art:

'The Drowning Dog' by Goya

"I think… it's a Goya. Yeah, old school. I think it's called 'Dog Buried in Sand' or something like that. It's so… I remember feeling it was such a visual representation of helplessness, in such a… come on, let's all admit that helplessness is a very recurring feeling for many of us, you know what I mean? When it comes to so many things. I guess… I was in Spain, in Madrid, and I was 20. And I went to the Goya museum. What's interesting about it is that the head of the dog is really quite small and sort of adorable, it looks like a stray mutt, and the painting - if I can remember it correctly - is very rectangular. There's so much above him, like the world just seems so big. It's quite incredible, isn't it? I know it's really sad, and sort of dark, and maybe I really like enjoy perceiving myself like..." (He gets interrupted by Russell, and then continues;) "Yeah, he's certainly not dying, it's sort of - it's a moment", (then interrupts himself with;) "Maybe he's totally dying, there's no way that dog is getting out of that. That dog is SO fucked. Anyway, that's the painting that represents my life". (All three of them burst out into laughing.)

If you're still reading this - I am impressed with your dedication to my silly little post, haha. Anyway, I just thought it was so striking that there basically is a straight line from the painting he mentioned in Talk Art to what Dieter is painting in the Bubble. Makes me wonder if perhaps he - or even Russell/Robert - had any input in that part of Dieter's backstory.

Everyone had slavery, if you had a war and took captives they became slaves because it's not like you could just keep them in a prison of some sort without having them earn their keep in some way and if you didn't want to just kill them or even worse let them go so they can come back and fight you again your options became limited.

(going to be tagging this as ruin spoilers but please dont comment any spoilers because we're not actually done with all the game. We've gotten 2/3 endings and are working towards the secret ending where you have to find hidden cameras while also replaying and seeking out the secrets we missed. This is seriously just insane ramblings aimed at no one i just need to get my thoughts out and suggest u scroll past.)

I seriously like. Am struggling to figure out the whole plot of ruin in an analytical story timeline sense. No i do not read or care about fan theories, i interpret the game and the lore by playing it and looking at all the clues myself thank you very much, so my interpretation of the lore is. different from most fans (you have to consider: very autistic, fnaf a Huge special interest for me. So when i analyze lore, i analyze as much as i can, every single secret. And i feel like a lot of people Miss main lore secret plot points. Im not trying to be a contraian, id love for the fans to have good theories. But like 70% of the time they dont. Or theyre dumb lil kids who blindly listens to mat pat)

my interpretation of sb is different from most fans and theories (mostly because I actually take help wanted and ar into account and can like. Use my brain to understand the differences between the vanessas (there are two. The murderer vanny, who we play as in help wanted, is referred to in ar, and is the one in the therapist tapes) and vanessa the nightguard, who's COMPLETELY unrelated and just an innocent nightguard who happens to have the same name and face as vanessa murderer (though it is also possible to me that like. Murderer vanessa chose to try to look more like nightguard vanessa in an attempt to shift the blame of her crimes, but we dont know this for sure.)and i dont think the therapist tapes are two different people because thats STUPID and it obviously is murderer vanessa (people just. Cannot possibly understand that a person being possessed by an entirely different entity might have changes in her prrsonality. Or that a person with anxiety might have something similar to selective mutism or at the VERY least: troubles speaking because of said murderer in her brain)

ANYWAYS THATS A HUGE ASS TANGENT. MY MAIN THOUGHTS AS OF PLAYING RUIN RN (Please dont spoil things for me im not completely done) is that mainly: i dont know who is speaking to us or who mimic is.

There may be two different people communicating with us with the vanni network (as evidenced by helpi changing eye colors and how like. Some of the motives seem conflicting?) Initially i was like "oh its glitchtrap or williams spirit or something." But that doesnt make any sense because glitchtrap gets Trapped and is worked against.

Even tho that was my first thought: i dont think mimic is burntrap, or william, or glitchtrap. But i dont know what it is, because there are no other obvious characters that it could be in mind (tho since its michaels old fnaf 6 restaurant theyre in, and we saw the blob down there, god knows it could be any number of old ass animatronics or spirits)

Another very fuckin obvious thought is: hey where the fuck is vanny. With the whole mask mechanic, the plot revolving around glitchtrap, ect, you THINK we'd see her st least once. And though she has a cameo in the bad ending which is clearly a vision/fantasy/trick, she doesnt actually appear. The INSTANT That we started this game i speculated: is she talking through helpi? The yellow eyes reminded me of an early sb teaser artwork where we see a close up of a vanessas face with striking, yellow eyes, and i was never sure the significance of that... But i dont think its related at all, as mimic seems to be the one speaking when helpi has yellow eyes. Is mimic related to vanny somehow? I wouldnt assume so.

Whats weird about vanny not being there is it makes it seem like shes not carrying out glitchtraps bidding, which is odd. Dont y'all come at me with that "Gregory helped her!" Crap, the burntrap ending is the canon ending so that never happened. It makes sense for her to be against him (shes never really been on her side, shes the RELUCTANT follower. She explicitly does not want to do any of the horrible shit, but shes beinf forved to) but i just. Gahh i cant figure it out

hi dsmp fandom. a while back me and my gf made an entire superhero au for the dsmp but i kinda wanna reboot it into its own thing, so i ain't gonna share most of it, but i will share the supernames because they rocked.

For the 'protagonists' we had: Tommy - Vigilante name was Recordbreaker. get it. because of the discs being records, and also the whole actual meaning of recordbreaker. that was fun. everybody also had greek code names. tommy was icarus.

Tubbo - Vigilante name was Biohazard. Because nukes and bee theme. Code name was Aristaeus.

Purpled - Vigilante name was Parsec because it was cool and I stole it from another fic lmao. Codename was Orion. just because its neat and i think it fits.

Ranboo - Xeno, latin for other, was the vigilante name, and we never made them a code name lol. might've just done lethe or styx. would've been boring tho.

Villians:

Dream - Metamorphosis, and code name was Kronos.

George - Exploit, and code name was Endymion. also. the dnf shippers missed an opportunity big time. the whole gist is this dude, endymion, right, is super pretty. i can't remember if hes a king or a shepherd or smth. so the moon, right. Selene. she sees this cute dude sleeping everynight, and kinda gets a crush on him. so she goes to zeus right. she's like 'hey there's this hot dude, and i wanna kiss him but he don't know me :(' so zeus puts endy to sleep eternally. something like that. *shakes georgexd shippers* y'all had so much potential.

Sapnap - Hellfire. don't think we got a code name for him.

Phil: Altitude, with tantalus being his code name. yes i know it wouldn't make sense in the au itself but god i could go on a tangent about how making phil like icarus or something is a waste of potential. tbh i disagree with most greek assignments of the sbi.

Techno: The Blade of Utter Justice. most people just call him Justice tho. its a lot easier. wilbur likes to mock him and call him utter. greek name was achilles. because super strong man who's great at fighting who's really close to one dude. minus the gayness.

Wilbur: ok him and tommy have my fav names ngl. ok ok so. first off, wilbur's code name is Lithium. (because its both flammable and an anti depressant, I believe.). to tie in to OG L'manberg, he's a drug dealer on the side. most commonly dealing 'blue' and 'blaze powder'. one time he gets caught high off his own product by civilians, and the super company freaks out. understandable. so they yoink wilbur out of the lime light, and put him on the bench until the drama dies down. they rebrand him in the process. they call him renassiance. get it. because revivedbur, and renassiance can be seen as another word for revolution? it was so fun. he's also called sisphyus because oh my god y'all been sleeping on it. sisphy literally has the whole thing of cheating death to stay alive. he literally gets revived. *gestures vaugely*

more of the Humans Are Space Fae au y'all like? what if Shuichi's species can see Blaschko lines?

for those who don't know, humans have stripes on out skin- but they're not visible with the naked eye and have to be brightened up under uv lights. some cases of various skin conditions actually follow the stripes tho so that's neat.

So now, imagine if Shuichi's species had good enough eyes they didn't need the uv light. imagine if he could see these lines all over Kokichi and just couldn't imagine him without them. he's seen pictures of Kokichi where the camera is too weak to pick up the lines and he finds it weird as hell cause he's not use to not seeing them.

He wonders how the hell Kokichi just lives life without caring that he can't see how brilliant he looks with them. He normally wouldn't be so up in arms about something like physical apperance, but in this case he can't help but feel disapointed that Kokichi can't see the lines.

Kokichi finds it cute how Shuichi will trace his claw over where he can only assume the stripes are when they cuddle, and how he happily tries to describe them to him. It's not like Kokichi hasn't seen images of other people's Blaschko lines in science reports and shit- to which he thought it kinda looks like Cinnamon Toast Crunch swirls- but he's never seen his own and for some reason that fact drives his lover up a wall.

One time, just for the hell of it, Kokichi gave Shuichi a thing of brown face paint and a paint brush and let him trace the lines on his face, neck, and arms to get him to relax. The idea was he traces the lines and Kokichi goes to look in a mirror to see them, which Shuichi gladly accepted.

Shuichi had a ball getting to paint Kokichi, and while the paint could never reflect how detailed nor beautiful the lines actually were, it was enough.

Kokichi ended up thinking it was really cool in the end, and he began to wonder what they actually looked like- he didn't tell Shuichi that cause he didn't want him going on another stripey tangent. Shuichi found out anyways thanks the fact he got really good at reading Kokichi, and promised he'd buy a camera from his home planet that can render his stripes so he can see them in full.

MK - genderwise he just goes by he/him and hasn't ever spent much time questioning it before, and he's somewhere around demiromantic / asexual (for the most part, he hasn't ever thought about being in a close relationship)

GK - he/him, but in truth he doesn't care all that much—for a long while in the past GK thought of himself as somewhere between he/they and they/them, and once given the title Aeon Hero eons ago GK was solely referred to with they/them (The Ancients only ever referred to Gala (or "Aeon") with them pronouns as well, which is also mentioned in ch19 of IYD!) Since throwing out the title and being freed from the crystal though, he's edged away from going back to it, but he's always been kinda fluid. He's also closer to panromantic / demisexual (I could delve into this even deeper but I'll stop myself before I go off on a tangent xD)

Just some quick clarification on shipping for them too! I do ship MetaGala (catch me crying over how cute some of the art is) so no worries! I just tend to gravitate towards it in a platonic sense more. I am starved for MetaGala friendship content (as I'm sure everyone is aware xD) and I just see a ridiculous amount of opportunity in how their dynamic can play out ! I'll readily vouch that platonic relationships can be just as strong as romantic and otherwise too (queer-platonic relationships are my absolute jam) but I'll just continue chilling in my corner here in the meanwhile.

Okay, first things first: this art style is soooo fucking cUTE and I'm a jealous, squealing bitch. Anyone who knows who the artist is, could you link me to them, stat? I think Thomas mentioned them at the beginning of the ep, but nYeh, brain hurt, doesn't wanna do wooork-

Okay, I'll admit, I was a little...apprehensive when I first saw the thumbnail and title. Part of it's just me being a bitter Remus Stan, but also...okay, deep breaths, controversial opinion time, get ready:

I don't ship Prinxiety.

Like, at all. 

I can see the appeal, and these dorks were so very, VERY cute in this particular ep, but I was honestly turned off by the ship long ago due to how overwhelmingly popular it is and how some fans characterize these two and treat this relationship as if it's the only valid one, y'know, the works—slight tangent, but that's also why I don't ship Logicality or Remile. I honestly vibe much better with ships like Roceit or Analogical, y'know?

Cutting in for another brief tangent: I'm surprisingly okay with Demus/Dukeceit/Receit/Trashnoodle/Whatever-Their-Ship-Name-Is-Oh-God-Why-Do-They-Have-So-Many-Fucking-Names; maybe it's cause they haven't actually interacted in canon and the fan content gives me such good Gay Disney Villain content, idk man im weird—).

Still, their interactions were both hilarious and sweet and like I said, I see the appeal, it's just not my cup of tea. y'all Prinxiety fans got fucking FED and I'm happy for you nerds. Enjoy ze happy boys!

I guess another factor in my...low-key hesitance when I first saw what the ep was about is that...okay, get ready, another controversial opinion, le gasp: well, I'm not a big Virgil fan. In fact, at times, he swaps places with Patton as my least favorite sides—especially with some of his recent behavior in eps like DWIT (the "prohibit your breathing comment" really triggered me, for example). Sometimes, his attitude, especially around other sides like Roman or Janus, reminds me a little too much of my sister, who I don't have...a very good relationship with. Add to that how the more...intense side of the fandom has a disturbing tendency to turn him into the 'uwu precious woobie emo baby who can do no wrong' while unnecessarily villainizing other CERTAIN sides in the process, and...I think you all see where I'm going with this little rant 😅

However, upon actually watching the ep, he wasn't...that bad? I don't think? I enjoyed watching him be a flustered, disaster-y mess and genuinely excited at the end, his interactions with Roman were nice enough, and him literally pushing Thomas to make a move with Nico despite his obvious panic attack was a nice moment of genuine character development. I like seeing that, that's the good shit right there. And him being all flustered and shit, and smiling so much at the end of the vid was just...well, adorable. This man has no fucking right to be this cute, my god

Also, this is a breather ep and adding Janus in probably would've caused unnecessary drama with the Roceit breakup and the constant antagonism between Virgil and him. It probably would've distracted from the point of the ep (flirting with social anxiety, exactly what it says in the tin)—much like it wasn't really Virgil or Remus's place to show up during POF. Does that make sense? I think it makes sense. Sorry, brain going brr-

In the interest of not clogging up that post any further, I have to say that it's only partially my fault that we pivoted away from memeing about cat custody battles into debating the merits of TPB and why someone like me might be reluctant to read it in spite of all the positive things the fandom has to say about it.

Summary: Thomas had a wonderful dream he unfortunately forgot about. The sides lead him to the subconscious to search for it with Remy’s help. He finds long forgotten memories of his sides, things they rather forget and threw there. Why are the yellow memories the most predominant? What is it that Deceit wanted so bad to forget?

Ships: platonic DLAMP, romantic Roceit (maybe, still deciding…), Remy is a flirt but he is completely platonic.

With Thomas pacing in his living room it was only a matter of time before the sides appeared. The brunette instantly running to talk to them, especifically, to Roman.

“Roman! What did I dream about yesterday!?” he exclaimed, excited.

“Actually, you must have certainly dreamed it today, since you went to sleep after midnight, meaning…” started Logan, being ignored by everyone once he started rambling. Thomas directed his attention to Roman yet again.

“Uh… pardon moi?” said the creative side.

“Is-is that french? … How do you know french? First spanish now french it just doesn’t make sense to me…” murmured Logan.

��Well! I’m glad you asked! Of course he knows them!” exclaimed Patton, his smile make them all prepared for what was coming. “After all they’re ROMANce languages!”

“… Oh god, no.” facepalmed Logan. While Virgil, who had been very quiet let out a snort.

“I mean partly yeah…” said Roman, hand on his chin.

“Wait, really?” spoke at unison the moral and logic sides.

“My dream!” insisted Thomas.

“Oh, right. Sorry for that figurative tangent…” apologized Logan, focusing on Thomas once more.

“Look, I had this amazing dream you wouldn’t believe!” he exclaimed, arms up in the air.

“Oh! oh! What was it about!?!” said Patton, jumping excitedly.

“That’s the problem! I have no idea!” huffed Thomas, now holding his head. “All I remember is me thinking I could make that into a video…”

“Oh… ”

“I hate that” said Roman echoing Virgil who looked at him in surprise, sharing a little smile.

“My best ideas go to waste that way!” continued Roman, looking back at Thomas.

“Do them? Is there no way to get them back?” Thomas sighed when Roman shook his head.

“Well…” said Logan, fixing his tie. “There might be one way…” earning hopeful looks from Roman and Thomas, he coughed. Virgil and Patton looked at him with confusion. Until he raised an eyebrow.

“OH! oh! oh! yesss” exclaimed Patton, realizing what the logical side meant. Virgil was the next one to understand.

“Do we really?” said the purple side, making a face.

“What? What’s happening?” asked Thomas, looking at all of them.

“They want to go to the subconscious now…” grumbled Virgil. “But…”

“But..? is it dangerous..?”

“Not at all!” Roman said making a pose with his arms.

“Well no, but Remy is… an interesting character.” murmured the anxious side.

“Now, now, Virgil, we don’t judge someone for their personality.” scolded softly Patton.

“Remy? Is he another side!?” questioned Thomas, excitement clear on his face.

“Not quite, the best way to call him would be…uh, a function.” said Logan. “He is sleep.” he explained. There was a beat of silence.

“That b**ch.” Thomas said, and Virgil started making sounds of agreement.

“Kiddo!” scolded again Patton.

“We’re not sure how long the dream will stay in the subconscious, tho.” mumbled Virgil. “or if that dude keeps track of them…”

“Nonsense, I’m sure Sleep has an organizing system that will allow us to…”

“Yeah, no.” interrupted, Roman. “I know the guy, he hangs out in the imagination a lot. And believe me when I say…he doesn’t seem like the type.” shrugged Roman.

“Well, what was the word-oh right, sh*t.”

“Language!” shushed Patton. Crossing his arms.

“None of that explains why I need this…” added Thomas, holding up a cup of Starbucks coffee.

“You don’t think he’s just going to help us for the goodness of his heart, right?” answered, Virgil, making a face.

“Of course he would! We all just want to help Thomas!” exclaimed Patton.

“Tell that to my insomnia…” whispered Thomas.

“uh? I didn’t catch that…?”

“He didn’t throw you anything?” questioned Logic.

“No, it’s-” Thomas sighed, massaging his temple. “just forget it.” he said, which earned him frowns from both sides.

Roman and Virgil were trying really hard to hold back their laughters.

When they finally made it to the subconscious Thomas was tired, after many unsuccessful attempts of making thomas fall asleep and almost deciding to just knock him out, they finally made it. Looking around, he find himself shivering. It was empty, everything around them was black, and the air seemed heavy.

“Guuuurrrrl, I could smell that from miles away.” was the only thing Thomas heard before the cup of coffee was taken from from (almost along with his hand). “This is the good sh*t!”

“Language.” automatically scolded Patton.

“OMG, Patty, my gurl. It’s so f**king nice to see you!” said Remy, Thomas guessed, while the guy put his arm across Patton’s shoulders. “I cannot f**king believe how many time has passed since y'all visited, you ungrateful b**ches.” he continued with a smirk, making Patton’s eye twitch.

“Why is my personality so weird?” asked himself Thomas.

“Well, he’s not…” started Logan.

“I’m not part of your personality, gurl. I’m my own kind of weird. Anyway! Thanks for the coffee, it was a nice detail, now If you excuse me…”

“Wow! Wait a f**king minute!” exclaimed Virgil.

“Language…” murmured Patton again, crossing his arms, defeated.

“Geez, of course you wouldn’t come here just to say hi! Y'all are the same, At least Dee-Dee pretends he wants to make conversation…” said Remy, as he started walking towards somewhere. Thomas didn’t know where, since everything was surrounded by darkness.

“Dee-Dee?” asked Logan, pushing his glasses up his nose, where they moved when Remy grabbed his arm. Thomas found his being grabbed to.

“Deceit comes here?” asked Virgil with a suspicious tone. “Why?” Remy just smiles, looking back at anxiety.

“Well of course, same as you.” he answered, putting his head in Thomas’s shoulder. “It wouldn’t be fair if I only let you guys do it.”

Logan nodded, as if agreeing. Patton gave a shivering Roman a side hug while Virgil crossed his arms, huffing. Thomas look at all of them, confusion clear in his eyes.

“I mean, even trash boy leaves things sometimes! But it’s rare.”

“Remus?” questioned Virgil.

“No, It’s Remy.” said sleep, making Thomas laugh at the reference. This made the guy look at him and Thomas finally was able to look back at him.

He had Ray-Ban glasses, he wondered if he could actually see with them on this dark place. His attire screamed bad boy but Thomas had alredy heard him talk, Remy was none of that. Leather jacket and all. The guy smirked at him and winked, at least that’s what Thomas thought, since he couldn’t see his eyes.

Before he realized, they were already walking on a long hallway. He startled a little, making sleep laugh.

“Don’t worry, babe. I got you.” He murmured.

Thomas nodded, looking around, the hallway was as dark as the entrance, or well, the place they arrived into. He wondered if Remy had just made it look into something he would find more normal to make him less nervous.

As they walked, framed pictures started to show up in the black walls, giving them a little bit of life. The more they walked the more frames there were. Thomas noticed the pictures moved, as if it was some kind of memory recorded and put there. The frames too, were of different colors.

“I don’t have to remind you guys not to touch those, right?” spoke the function, pulling Thomas closer to him when the brunette got too close for comfort to a green frame. “I would specifically avoid grabbing those, hun. If even Rem-Rem wanted that out of his head…” he shivered. “Oof, cannot imagine what would unsettled that dude. Knowing him.”

“What are them?” asked Thomas.

“Memories! There’s a bunch of yours too, but I keep those in a different place.” answered Remy, sipping his coffee. He had Logan crouching next to him, walking funny because of the height difference and because he never let go of his arm.

“Also why are you pulling Logan too…? I mean I understand me but…”

“Ha! This hot babe is more curious than you think. I don’t trust him not to try and poke one in the name of ‘science’…” while he said that he made sure he pulled Logan even closer. “He is also very handsome and I rather have him close if you know what I mean.” he whispered only for him.

“I-”

“You are rather cute yourself!”

“I think that’s quite enough!” huffed Roman, making Thomas jump in fright, he had been quiet since they arrived there.

Remy stopped and turned, linking Thomas and Logan’s arms together. The former looked at the logical side for answers, but Logan just shrugged, holding him closer.

“Ro-Ro don’t be jealous!” said Remy, hugging the creative side. “you know you’re my favorite!” despite himself, Roman couldn’t stopped the tiny smile in his face.

“Well of course!” he said, making a grand gesture with his arms.

“After Dee-Dee!”

“Wait, what!?” said Roman, Virgil and Thomas at the same time. Patton only giggled and Logan shook his head.

“He visits the most, of course I love him!” said as he return to his previous position between Thomas an Logan. “You should come to our pijama parties, raven.”

“I’m good, thanks.” was Virgil’s sarcastic response.

“Oh! Oh! Can I come? Sounds so fun!” jumped Patton.

“Of course!”

“Yaaaaaay.” celebrated the moral side.

“Patton!?”

“Oh, come on kiddo, he can’t be that bad if Remy likes him right?” plead the dad side.

“You can’t trust this guy’s judgment…” insisted Virgil.

“Ohoho no, he’s a total bitch.” interrupted sleep. “That’s exactly why I love him.”

They kept bickering and Thomas was getting even more tired. He looked around once more, watching the moving pictures in the frames, almost like Harry Potter’s! He thought, excitedly. He watched closely but making sure he didn’t touched any by accident. He didn’t know what would happen but he wasn’t going to chance it.

As he payed more attention he noticed the frames were not in any specific order, they were also diferent colors and shapes, it certainly made the walls look less gloomy. He also noticed one more thing.

“Are the yellow ones from Deceit?” he asked, stopping the voices, he hadn’t noticed how loud they were now that even Logan had joined them.

“Uh… What makes you say that?” asked Remy instead of answering.

“Well, you said Remus’s were the green ones. I’m pretty sure I saw Roman in one of the red ones, and the purples can’t be anyones but Virgil's…” Thomas looked back at the other’s, Logan was smiling at him while fixing his glasses.

“Great deductions, Thomas, I’m very proud.” Logic said, making Thomas blush and smile a little.

“That makes the dark blues Logan’s and the light blues Patton’s.” he finished, hand on his neck. Remy smirked.

“Yeah, pretty much.”

“But…” said this time Patton, frowning worriedly. “There are so many…”

Nobody had really noticed how the yellow frames took most of the walls, even more so, as they walked ahead. You could almost miss it at the amount of purples and light blues that also filled the other wise blank spaces. But Patton was right. Yellow was predominant.

“Well, I did say he visited me the most, didn’t I?” shrugged Remy, holding Thomas’s hand. “But is whatever, let’s find that dream you’ve been looking for, Tom-Tom, It shouldn’t be too hard since it’s so recent.”

“Oh… Uh, alright…”

BLACKPINK (블랙핑크) - KILL THIS LOVE (2ND MINI ALBUM) [COMEBACK REVIEW]

One thing we can all agree on is that the past few months in K-Pop have had NO CHILL WHATSOEVER.

SERIOUSLY. There have been so many fucking comebacks for me to try and keep up with - THE SPRING COMEBACK REVIEW LOOKS LIKE IT'S GOING TO BE THREE PARTS LONG. YEAH.

But I've got two big albums to cover before we get into that whole set of shenanigans - I'll say it now, they're both girl groups. (Being blatantly honest, I'm not interested enough in BTS to do a full comeback review of Persona; "Boy With Luv" will be in the spring comeback review.) And this is the first one - BLACKPINK's first comeback since last summer.

Now, of course, I want to admit before we start that I am a Blink. I do like BLACKPINK quite a lot. But that doesn't mean that I'm going to write this whole review from that perspective; I'm going to do my best to be as equal and open-minded as possible here. Yes, there will be some fangirling on my part, because I can't help it. But I'm going to do my best to remain as impartial as I can. It's more fun that way!

I've admittedly put this review off for long enough (because finals are a bitch), so let's not fuck around any longer and finally take a look at Kill This Love.

1 - KILL THIS LOVE [TITLE]

...okay, so I know I said I'm going to be as impartial as possible here, but... I did also say there would be a bit of fangirling, so let's get that out of the way first, shall we?

Holy mother of FUCK this is going to be a contender for my song of the year.

From a Blink's perspective, I do not get a single ounce of the hate for this song. It fucking SLAPS. Did y'all hear that brass line, or are we listening to different songs?? Because while a good brass line is a surefire way to get into my heart, it gives the song so much raw power and poise that it's impossible for me to hate this. Hell, it's impossible for me to even dislike it. This is the first comeback I've actually prepared for, which included me watching the V LIVE stream the hour before the video came out. So I was already hyped. And then "Kill This Love" managed to meet pretty much all of my expectations! I was... super impressed by that. I stand by my opinion that I shared on Twitter a few weeks back; this is BLACKPINK's best title track by far, and one of the best songs they've ever released. Whilst "DDU-DU DDU-DU" admittedly wore off on me a bit over time, I don't know if that's going to happen with "Kill This Love". Every time I listen to it, I get just as hyped as the first time I heard it. It's fucking amazing.

But now, let's be more impartial and look at it from a musical perspective. Why do I like it so much, whilst others detest it or say it's nothing special? Well, I feel like that's mainly because of the structure. I've heard so many different people say that "Kill This Love" feels like an absolute mess; it has no consistency or flow, and just feels like multiple songs mashed together. And yet, some of the most popular and well-known songs in K-Pop are examples of that trope - look at Girls' Generation's "I Got A Boy"! I don't think I've ever seen someone who dislikes that song. I even love it! It knows what it wants to be, and has fun with it. And yeah, I wouldn't say that "Kill This Love" has fun with its concept - it... moreso wants to break your door down with its power and charisma. WHICH IS COMPLETELY FINE BY ME, BLACKPINK CAN STEP ON ME.

But to go off on a bit of a tangent real quick, because of the huge rise of social media (and most importantly, stan culture), hate is going to seem more prominent than ever - especially with a group as big as BLACKPINK. But that doesn't mean you can't like "Kill This Love" for what it is. I love seeing people discuss what they do and don't like about a song, because that promotes healthy discussion. But throwing around hate for the sake of it is what really bugs me; and unfortunately, I did see a lot of that with this comeback. But sometimes you just have to brush it under the rug and enjoy what you enjoy. If you don't like this song? Great! That's your opinion. If you love it just like I do? Fantastic! You also have an opinion! Basically, don't be a dick to someone who doesn't agree with you.

ANYWAY, back to the song. I see what people mean when they say it lacks structure, but that's exactly why people like "I Got A Boy" so much; it subverts your expectations, and feels so distinctively... K-Pop, if you get what I mean. It's meant to be flashy and in-your-face; the labels behind these songs couldn't give less of a shit about structure. It's something that the genre is known for, and something I quite like to see when it's done well. One problem I do have with this song, however, is its ending; I do feel like it ends too quickly, although I'll admit the problem goes away the more you listen to it. The more accustomed you become to the song, the more you expect the ending and the less abrupt it feels.

But hey, lack of structure or not, all four of the girls sound great here! Jennie sounds fantastic in her lower range (as she always does), Lisa's rap is just as charismatic as it's ever been, Jisoo sounds downright royal, and Rosé? Man, this is Rosé's ERA. Her vocals here are so powerful and charismatic that I honestly love watching loops of her parts from live performances. She suits this concept so fucking well.

The lyrics are pretty alright, too. They give off this very conflicted vibe of being in a relationship that you know is dangerous and probably quite bad for you, but you actually like the danger, and want to stick around regardless. I'm not even going to get into the whole controversy that came up with the lyrics and photobook pictures, because I've rambled enough as it is. If you take the lyrics at a superficial level - as they were probably intended in the first place - they're an interesting spin on a typical breakup/love song. And for once, I don't feel like the English sections are out of place! That's definitely an achievement in my eyes.

I know it already feels like I've written an essay's worth of content, but that's just the song and lyrics. What about the choreography here? Do I like it as much as the song?

Spoilers: yes. I do.

This routine is just as powerful as the song it's choreographed for. It's not mind-blowing or anything, but it's definitely great in my eyes. There are so many little details and hand/arm movements that definitely tell you that Kiel Tutin was involved; which, yeah, we already know he was. It's a trademark of his style. And goddammit, it WORKS here. Every single little beat is hit or at the very least touched upon, and it's super satisfying to watch. I don't think I could imagine another choreography to go with "Kill This Love"; this one just seems so well crafted and has so much effort put into it that I wouldn't WANT any other choreography. This one is perfect. It's powerful, it's sassy, and it's exquisitely detailed. Sounds great to me!

And I don't care if it's been said a million times: Rosé's hair is the 5th member of BLACKPINK. THEM EXTENSIONS THO.

All in all, "Kill This Love" knocked it out of the park for me. It met - and honestly surpassed - all of the expectations I had going in, which were already sky-high. I really hope this is the standard BLACKPINK adhere to in the future, because I'll be a very fucking proud Blink if they do.

2. DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO [SUB-TITLE]

Next, in what's seeming to be a tradition for BLACKPINK, we have the side track - "Don't Know What To Do". And I'm going to say it straight away - no, this shouldn't have been the title track. It works best as a side track, in my opinion. The song is nice, yes, but title track material it is not.

What it IS, though, is a surprisingly emotional yet upbeat breakup song. The more natural elements are a nice surprise, with the acoustic guitar chords and finger snaps adding a nice sense of flow. There's also the fact that those synths in the chorus make this a pretty anthemic song, since the chorus just explodes after the great build-up in the bridge. The way the instrumental dips in and out is particularly effective. "Don't Know What To Do" almost reminds me a bit of G-Dragon's "Crooked" in its tone; you know, you listen to it for the first time, and think it's a party song. Then you look up the lyrics and you realise that it's not.

But the biggest thing giving away that this is actually a breakup song is the girls' vocals. All of them sound surprisingly emotional here - Jennie even sounds like she's going to burst into tears at some points! (Hopefully that's not actually because of her own breakup, which, if it is, then dammit I want to hug her.) There's also the fact that Rosé's doing her best Avril Lavigne impression in her first chorus, which is honestly SUCH a great sound for her. It's making me hope her solo has a rockier edge to it... Lisa's raps are still quite steady and have a good flow, but are surprisingly toned down for her - and her vocals sound great too! And Jisoo basically carries the choruses, if you ask me - her falsetto gives them that extra melodic hook they need, and she sounds fantastic.

The lyrics are quite good, too! Just like the song, they're surprisingly emotional, and focus on some of the smaller details (which is something I always like). They've got just the right amount of emotion to them without feeling overdone, sappy or cringey.

But thanks to this song's status as a side track, we've got choreography to look at here too. And... I may just like this just as much - if not even more - than "Kill This Love"'s choreography. And THAT'S saying something.

This routine is the definition of satisfying to me. It's so... dynamic, so fluid, and with so many little details and extra bits that they didn't have to add. But they did. And it's SO much better for it. There's a lot of floor sections, which means it must be fucking exhausting to do (especially since BLACKPINK normally seem to sing live in some shape or form), but the girls look effortless regardless. It's a very unique routine, and one that just gets better and better every time I watch it. I keep finding new little details, and that just makes it even more enjoyable for me.

So while I don't think "Don't Know What To Do" is title material, it's certainly fantastic as a side track. Hell, I'm glad it's the side track, because it means we still got to see choreography for it.  It fits in very nicely!

3. KICK IT

With both promoted tracks out of the way, we still have two new songs and a remix to look at. And the first of those two new songs is "Kick It", which the girls actually ended up performing as part of their set at Coachella. But while I do like the song - it's fun, with a nice chill vibe in places and a powerful one in others - it's... probably my least favourite song on the album. But that's just because I like all the other songs so much! So don't take that as a bad thing. I just find it to be pretty standard.

"Kick It" makes ample use of a really strong bassline in its instrumental, as well as some interesting drums and guitar melodies. But the bass is particularly strong here, and it'll be one of the first things you notice if you're listening with a good pair of headphones. The melody honestly has a really nice rhythm in places - it can change from being quite slow and steady to a little quicker and even quite anthemic towards the end. That chanting English section before the final chorus is awesome. The girls definitely supplement this power with their vocal delivery; Lisa's rap in particular is really nice. In all English, too! And it's not cringey, which is... certainly new for BLACKPINK.

Speaking of English, the lyrics for this song have about as much of it as you'd expect. It's used pretty frequently, but never feels out of place or unneccessary, which is always good. And the lyrics themselves are alright; they're pretty much what you'd expect from any empowerment anthem, but they're certainly fitting of BLACKPINK's overall image.

But yeah, "Kick It" is a song I honestly don't have a lot of opinions on. It's a good song, for sure. But it just feels very... normal for BLACKPINK at this point, for lack of a better word? It's the sort of song that you'd expect from them nowadays, and while I do like the song quite a bit, it's nothing too special. I still recommend giving it a listen if you're interested, though.

4. HOPE NOT (아니길)

Ironically enough, we're going from my least favourite song on the album to what's probably my favourite. Yeah, I love "Kill This Love" to bits - but I'm not including that here. Out of all the side tracks on this album, "Hope Not" is the best of them. Straight up.

That says a lot considering how minimal this song really is; all it's really got is the girls' vocals, some harmonies and an electric guitar riff in the background. But that's all it needs. Then you look at the credits for this song and you realise why it probably works so well - Lydia Paek was involved in the production of this. And she definitely knows what she's doing. Hell, I like her cover of Taeyang's "Eyes Nose Lips" more than the original. She's talented as shit. And I'm delighted to see her create something for BLACKPINK, because "Hope Not" is gorgeous. It's actually a really well-done ballad, one that's not too caught up in its own misery and expecting us to take it seriously. It's very real and sincere, whilst being emotional and heartfelt at the same time. There's a lot going on here, which you wouldn't think from just listening to the instrumental.

The girls once again sound surprisingly good here; they showed their emotional sides on "Don't Know What To Do", but I actually like the approach here just as much. They're not quite as emotional vocal-wise on "Hope Not", but the approach each of them takes with their performance is really damn pleasing to listen to, ranging from hushed melodies in their lower range to more emotional belting in the choruses. It's a great contrast, and sounds gorgeous when you put it all together. Unfortunately, my main problem with this song also lies in the vocals - the autotune. It's just not needed. It's making Rosé sound like she's either slurring her words together or singing underwater. Possibly both. You can hear it very clearly in a few places, and for a song that's attempting to be a lot more natural and stripped back, it really, really doesn't work. Especially when it's so thick. But I'm glad to say that's my only problem with the song; the rest of it is all excellent in my eyes!

Especially when it comes to the lyrics. I might need a plaster for my heart after reading them, because ouch. Yes, this is a breakup song, a ballad - but it's certainly an unconventional one. Instead of talking about how depressed the breakup has left them feeling, or being angry at their ex, or being empowered now that they're on their own again, "Hope Not" actually has a really sweet sentiment behind it. They don't know where their ex is now, or who they're with. The girls are just grateful that the relationship happened. And whilst they admit both parties made mistakes in the relationship itself, they hope their ex doesn't forget them and the times they had together.

I don't give a damn if you find that cheesy or cringey, I think it's sentimental as fuck, and a really damn good piece of songwriting. Overall, I find it to be more effective than "Don't Know What To Do" in terms of emotional power; it's more powerful than any slow song BLACKPINK's done, even if there aren't that many of them. This is their best yet.

I don't think I have to spell it out when I say I love this song to bits. It's probably my most listened-to song on the album, besides "Kill This Love". It just stands out so much, both because of how much it can do with so little, and because of its phenomenal lyrics. It's goddamn gorgeous, and a serious contender for my side tracks list at the end of this year. 😊

5. DDU-DU DDU-DU (뚜두뚜두) [REMIX]

To end off the album, we have a remix of "DDU-DU DDU-DU". Because of course we do, it's YG, what would you expect at this point?

But this is actually alright in my eyes, because this remix is actually fucking awesome. I've seen a lot of people say that they don't like it, but as someone who listens to EDM pretty regularly, this is my shit. It did feel a bit messy on the first listen, but there are some parts of this remix that are so goddamn hype, I'm majorly pissed they didn't perform it at Coachella. Seriously. THIS WOULD'VE SLAPPED, WHY DID YOU NOT DO IT. Although apparently they were performing it on their NA tour, but it was just as an encore. Why. I'd love to see some switched up choreography for this, please YG I'm begging you. ;-; (The electric guitars they added in sounded AMAZING though. Like wow.)

The more you listen to this, the more you get into it. For real. Jennie's rap section is honestly better than the original version, purely because of that use of the 808 bass. My jaw was on the goddamn floor listening to it for the first time, that shit went HARD. There's not really much else to talk about here - if you want to hear my (albeit very hyped at the time) thoughts on "DDU-DU DDU-DU" I talked about it back in my autumn comeback review last year. The remix is just a better version of it, if you ask me. It's got so much hype behind it that I can't help but love it.

And that's the entire album! Unfortunately BLACKPINK's albums are so short and few and far between that I feel like I need to savour each release. But now that they're really gathering momentum in the West, maybe - just maybe - we'll get another comeback this year? I mean I don't want to curse it, but a bitch can dream. 💀

Hola mis amigos. Oo I miss speaking Spanish actually, the problem with being in Australia its all English, no Spanish shockingly. Fine I'll go to mexico to visit Hannah and "practice my Spanish", a good excuse for another holiday.  I would love to go back mexico actually and see whale sharks, cartels and weed plantations, lol sorry Hannah.

But I digress I am writing today because I have a bit of time to kill before my ferry back Townsville and my consequential bus down to airlie beach Whitsundays, WOOOO YOLO LETS HAVE THE BEST THREE DAYS OF MY LIFE. But that is my next stop so you dont get to hear about it yet, mainly cause I havent actually done it yet but I am pretty sure I could give you a very accurate representation of how it will go: beaches, snorkeling, jumping off boats, goon, paddle boarding and some more goon I imagine.

But no, I will bring us back again, and seriously guys stop distracting me by sending me on tangents it makes these posts longer than they already are, veryyyy longggg. Okokok I am currently by the pool and coincidentally also sat by the beach on magnetic (Maggie) island. A virtual Paradise on earth as it is blessed with buff beaches and bays, wicked wildlife including THE LARGEST POPULATION OF KOALAS IN SUCH A SMALL AREA IN THE WORLD, bangin barbie cars, fan four by fours and a pretty tremendous trek. That was some outrageous alliteration if I say so myself, I take my inspiration from the one and only big shak.

So what did I do? I hear you ask. I am glad you asked guys. So 6 us hired a huge 4x4 for 24 hours costing us 35 bucks each overall, not bad value at all. It was nicknamed Bertha because she was such a beast and having cruised thru the outback in the 2wd falcooon with its 2inch ground clearance this was a slice of heaven. The huge tyres, the foot high suspension and the space, they were enough to make me feel like I had found nirvana and could now die happy, pure ecstasy.

So with big Bertha we set out our map and plan and just cruised. First stop koalas. The main animal left on my list I needed a selfie with, its safe to say this was a pressurised stop but the man had said there about five on this plot of land, so we searched. And bingo. First spotted in 3 minutes by yours truly. It was adorable but far away so we kept looking and second was located but was also a way away. We moved to a new tree. Best decision of my, and probably my compatriots lives. We found numbers 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 in swift succession with each getting closer and closer. Finally I found the winner, a fat koala just out of arms reach and ideal for the photos, we harassed this poor koala for maybe 10 mins before thinking he needs to go back to his 23 hour sleep. Koalas tick.

Next stop was a hike up to a WWII fort, a nice walk famous for koalas but we didn't care about them anymore having seen such a plethora already. It was a nice walk tho with gold company and when we came to the top and climbed on the highest building it was a buff view to be fair, worth the walk, about 1.5-2 return maybe, I'm not really sure, soz. After a slow start in the morning owing to a lack of organisation and the previous nights exploits we had made a good start to the day. So we hopped back in to the beast and bombed it to the next spot.

Snorkelling, yes please. Keen to use our complementary snorkeling kit, it was a must do activity for the day. And having been spoilt with an abundance of wicked snorkel trips in the past I didn't know what to expect but was hopeful owing to clearness of the water. We got there, suncreamed up, waited ten mins, and I was in. As I've eluded to in previous posts, when I spot a swimming spot, there ain't nothing stopping me. Oo side note, we got lucky on our timings because November - may is stinger season and you can't swim lol, losers who came them. But yeah they're very serious about the stingers insisting you west a stinger suit and they even have vinegar on the beach in case of an attack. But yes the snorkeling, it was decent nice coral and I saw a few sting rays, although I missed the reef sharks that were out reputably. Gutted. The visibility wasn't great though but a nice little swim anyway.

We also tried to feed birds afterwards. This was a let down. But nevertheless quite funny I suppose as we got there and saw 10 people with wet bread in their hands holding it up.... We naturally joined this bizarre ritual and grabbed our soggy bread. It was a bit butterz and after 3 mins it was clear they weren't coming so we ditched it and flew on to our next spot, west point. Perfect for a good sunset.

It was buff. A beautiful beach. Clear blue water. And a nice setting yellow sun. I obviously went swimming, alone sadly, probs would have been a bit weird if there was someone else there cause it would have been well romantic. But yeah, we chilled and watched the sun drop as you do with any sunset, so I won't bore you by describing it. I nice end to a nice day. BUT WAIT.

This was not the end...I have a surprise for y'all. Yep our last activity of the day. Feeding rock wallabies. Too bloody cute, as tenure nocturnal you go in the dark to feed them carrots, awwwww. Loaded with carrots and apples we descended. And there they were, so small and cute I seriously didn't realise how small they were, like tiny. They were also very scared and tentative but would still usually accept the free meal. We even fed two which had little tiny babies in their pouches, this was too much. They were lovely.But yes that was a sick day and then we had the car the next morning so went for another wee snorkel and saw lots more rays. Before heading to see butterflies, thee weren't many butterflies. So we headed to a beach to chill and I climbed some big rocks, matt you'd be so proud of me. Since then its been all chilling by the pool and beach and swimming obvs. I also slept in my tent last night yay and intend to stay in it again tonight.Basically Maggie island has been awesome, a must stop for anyone on the east coast.
