Hiya Moo!!
I’ve been in a huge reading slump lately and the only light at the end of the tunnel seems to be your new Hard Times fic so thank you so much <3
How have you been? Did you in fact cook your Thanksgiving dinner while high? Any new shows you recommend? (I’ve been in a Law & Order: SVU binge for comfort lately)
Love & appreciate you so much, talk to you soon muah
I hope you enjoy the rest of the story! 🖤
I did in fact make Thanksgiving dinner while high and it took several hours longer than intended but I didn't burn myself and it tasted great so I call that a success babeeyy
I've been watching so many shows but honestly nothing new to recommend. Lot of mediocrity. I renewed my Netflix subscription to catch up on the stuff I like but I can only watch those when my partner is home since we both like them and I don't want to watch ahead without him (Dead to Me, Inside Job, Stranger Things, stuff like that), so in the meantime ive been watching their various new limited series and such and WOOF its pretty embarrassing how bad they are.
That Echoes show had an interesting premise at first but they completely fumbled the middle to the end. (The main actress' performance was very underwhelming and gave me ZERO sense of the twins' personalities whatsoever)(though I don't think that's her fault, it's probably the writing/directing). The Watcher was laughably awful from the very beginning and had so many personal opinions of the writer so clearly stuffed into the dialogue that made it feel super preachy and insincere. The Devil in Ohio show was so boring I completely zoned out for the final 2 episodes but I can still tell you exactly what happened because it was very basic and not original or interesting whatsoever. That 1899 show was good until I found out it was plagiarized so now I wipe my hands of it and refuse to give it any acknowledgement.
Granted, I love watching mediocre shows so I'm right at home on Netflix lmao
Though once I'm done watching all the new shows and movies and nature documentaries and rewatching all the stuff I actually like, I'm probably gonna cancel my subscription again because yikes. I prefer not to give them too much money considering they gotta lotta nerve canceling TEENAGE BOUNTY HUNTERS THE FUCKING BASTARDS (listen I'm so pissed about that still)
When I'm not watching some mediocre Netflix series, I'm watching the usuals. Bob's Burgers, King of the Hill, The Great North, Archer, Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia (sans the most recent season, which is garbage), Lost, Futurama, you know, the classics. (or I'm watching a million movies ofc)

Feature of the Week & Authors Cut
Alright guys, so, I’m taking part in No Content November.  So, in lieu of making new content (Read: posting new content), I’m going to feature a bit of my writing.
So, for Week FOUR, I’m going to Feature:
The Greatest Thing
Tumblr media
I’m ending my No Content November Feature with The Greatest Thing, because it’s the week of Thanksgiving in America and I think there are a lot of good takes and lessons in this fic that reflect the start of the holiday season.
Summary:
The Greatest Thing is a story about love. It’s a Moulin Rouge fanfic that features Christian and an original character named Estelle Devereux. It tells the story of how they met and their life before Christian ends up in Paris, and the chaos that ensues after he leaves for Paris. It takes place for the most part in Victorian England during the Social Season of 1899 and into 1900. The two of them navigate their way through societal expectations all while trying to work out their own feelings as well. This leads to Estelle having to choose between her head and her heart and learning what she would actually be able to live with.
Author’s Commentary:
I spent... four months writing this story. I produced a chapter a week, and it finished in October. I got the idea for this story after I wrote a one-shot that was Christian x Reader where reader reconnects with Christian in Paris. You can read it here.
After writing that story, I began thinking, well, what was their relationship like? What happens after? That’s when I decided I had to write it. However, then I was faced with my next big decision: x Reader or make up an original character.  As you have probably figured out by now, I went with an original character. It wasn’t so much that I don’t like x Reader, but I didn’t think I was able to write the fic that I wanted to write while keeping it as vague as I believe an x Reader fic needs to be. I do think that shot me in the foot a little, because not a lot of people want to read an original character fanfiction, which I’ve never really understood because people buy books to read about original characters all the time, but rarely do they want to read free content about them.
Either way, Estelle Devereux was born. She became a character that I slowly molded out of research. So much research. It took me two days typically to finish a chapter for this because the first day would be devoted to plotting the chapter and doing research for it. I’ve learned a lot about Victorian bathrooms, hygiene practices, dinner conversation etiquette, fashion, courting practices, the Bohemian scene in both London and Paris, and festivals. For some reason, I felt the need to make this as historically accurate as possible. I think the end result came out nicely, and now I have a bunch of random knowledge of things. Also, wildly enough, this is my first multi-chapter fic that does not have any smut in it. I know. Shocking.
Favorite Things:
Oh, where to begin? For starters, the chapter titles are all song lyrics. No one ever mentioned that, so I don’t know if it was noticed or not. I did a lot of world building in this, because we really don’t know much about the lives of the characters outside the Moulin Rouge. So, I created a lot of backstories and original characters. The hardest thing was creating someone who people would want to root for instead of Satine. So, I tried to make someone who was a little bit Satine’s opposite. I made her an intelligent woman of Society, which led to some pretty dialogue.
I talk about the flower scene all the time, but I truly do love it. It’s in the first chapter if I remember correctly, and it’s just Estelle giving a whole analogy about how women are like flowers:
“Do you feel like a flower?" he asked thoughtfully as he came over and bent at the waist to inhale. The sweetest smile crossed his face as he straightened.
"Is a woman not a flower?" she asked in response. "If one looked at the ball room like a bird in a tree looks over a garden, would they not see the same sight? Women in colorful dresses, putting on their best airs and making themselves colorful enough to be wanted in order to attract the bees of men."
His brow furrowed at her words. "You speak like a poet. Darling, what's wrong with attracting a bee?"
She smiled knowingly, wagging a pointed finger at him like she used to when they were children and she needed to teach him a lesson. "Bees pollinate flowers. They spread the pollen 'round and round. Bees have the ability to seek out other flowers when theirs start to wither and die. Bees don't have to tend to the flower as it dies on the vine," she gently reached out to hold a dying rose. "No one wants the flower when its not at its best, for they don't truly love the flower. If they did... they'd know that the flower still had so much more to give, even after it looses its beauty."
Some of my other favorite dialogue comes from later chapters where they have a fair bit of philosophical conversations.
My favorite dress I’ve described in this fic was one of her earlier dresses. It’s this red walking dress with a matching hat and umbrella. I want to say its from either chapter two or three.
Easter Eggs:
So, we don’t get a lot of background information on the main characters. Due to this, I had to do a lot of name research. For instance, giving Christian a surname. I looked up Victorian surnames and decided on Thompson because it also has Scottish origins as a nod to Ewan McGregor.
I snuck in a reference to The Ladies Paradise by Zola in one of the later chapters, bringing up Denise when they go to a department store in Paris.
I also pulled in one of Toulouse’s real life muses, having her in his studio one day when Christian comes to visit.
And, of course, there’s the whole song lyric titles again.
Overall, I just really love this fic and I’m very proud of it, so I’ll signal boost the crap out of it in hopes that other people will love it, too.

Thursday, November 23rd, 1899- Democrat and Chronicle
Article about the tickets given for the Thanksgiving meal to be for the newsboys in Rochester. Click the source link to read the full article, or check under the cut.
Reportedly ~1000 lined up for tickets, which could also be received at the Boys’ Evening Home. The article mentions that the city hall had an automatic water fountain, by which the boys were fascinated, and which subsequently led to what seems to have been a bit of a water fight.
People:
The “Messrs.” Garson
Assistants to the Garsons’
“Rubbers”, a newsboy
Places:
[Rochester] City Hall
Fitzhugh St.
Boys’ Evening Home
“Tickets for Garson’s Thanksgiving dinner to the newsboys were given out last night at the city hall, and about 1,000 happy youngsters received their “invitations” to the feast that is to them the greatest event of the year. The scene was not unlike those of previous years, except that there were more boys and consequently more noise.
It had been announced that the distribution of the tickets would be made at 7:30 o’clock, but the lower corridor of the big building was thronged with a yelling, pushing and happy crowd of newsies, bootblacks and, as one of them explained, ‘a lot of city kids what ain’t go no badges but allus ring in on our deal’.
It is safe to say that not even an ‘extra edition’ would have had much interest for the newsies last night, so anxious were they to be on time. There was certainly little of formality about them, and they deemed it just as well to be on hand an hour before the stated time. After a critical inspection of the automatic drinking fountain located in the corridor, which inspection resulted in spreading a liberal  amount of water on the floor and in the faces of the inspectors, the boys finally formed a line to await the coming of the ‘feller what has the tickets’.
While some of the larger ones ignored the rights of the smaller boys, many of them made room for the ‘little fellers’ in the line, and held them there until got the prize for which they awaited. The noise was enough to frighten Aguinaldo’s army out of its boots, and nearly one half of the boys put their caps in their pockets or blouses to protect them being snatched from their heads and thrown away, while the one that snatched them captured the coveted position in the line.
The Messrs. Garson, with four or five assistants, were greeted with a yell that echoed through the building. A man was stationed at one of the front entrances with the tickets, and the doors were then opened. Instantly the long line began to squirm as the youngsters commenced to push ahead, and the combined strength of two or three men could hardly keep those in front from being pushed down the steps before they could get their tickets.
A sentinel was posted at the side entrance on Fitzhugh Street, but apparently not until some of the young rascals who had already received their tickets had succeeded in gaining entrance again, in order to get another ticket. It was impossible to tell whether all got their tickets, but those who were missed will receive tickets at the Boys’ Evening Home, if they are deserving of them.
Some of the ‘kids’ thought the dinner was to be given last night, but were told to reassemble at the city hall at 6 o’clock next Wednesday night, when they will march to the Garson store and there get their fill of good things which have been so generously provided for them in years past.
Not the least interesting feature of the distribution was the exchange of confidences overheard between some of the boys after they had received their tickets.
‘Say Rubbers, you got two tickets, I seen yer,’ fiercely exclaimed one little fellow.
‘Naw, I ain’t needer. Only got one, cross my heart.’
‘Yes yer have, and I want it. I ain’t got none. You remember when I give yer a bite out of the bananer what I swiped from the Greek. Now you gimme a ticket.’
Rubbers continued to demur, and the argument continued with a scrap in an alley.”

“Last night was newsboys night. It was their one night of feasting and happiness to which they look forward throughout the year. You realized it as you walked the streets any time between the hours of 6 and 8 o’clock, after wondering what made the streets so quiet and what had become of the bevies of buys miniature businessmen who usually swarm the streets at that hour, falling over one another in order to be the first to reach a customer.
But last night the customer had to seek the boy, and he wondered if the earth had suddenly opened and swallowed up the vendors of the latest news until he neared the corner of Main street east and St. Paul street, and he remembered what was the trouble. Long before reaching Garson’s store the crowed was encountered, and around the doors it was so dense that it required several policemen to clear a passage way. Garson was host last evening, it was the fifth annual dinner to the newsboys and bootblacks of the city.
The interior of the large store was transformed. Handsome flags of all nations fluttered from the large columns, gilded cages of canary birds hung between, and mottoes of welcome and good cheer decorated the walls. Ropes were strung to keep the crowds of spectators outside and to give the boys a chance, and at exactly 6:30 the youngsters, several hundred strong, marched from the city hall to the big store. There was a mighty roar and noise as of artillery, a mighty shout of ‘Garson, he’s all right,’ a rush of a thousand feet.
Then the crush and the fun began. The boys were admitted on the St. Paul street side, and the door was guarded by a big, fat policeman. When the door opened the policeman and a man at the other side of the door grabbed youngsters one at a time and pulled them in much as one would grab chestnuts out of the fire. No one but a small boy seeking a good dinner could have lived through the ordeal, but though some of the smaller ones came in in tears from being crushed by the larger boys, all went out smiling and happy.
And well they might. Such a sight as met their eyes and gladdened their hearts is not a common one for the street gamin. Beautifully spread tables weighted with turkey, cranberry sauce, celery, and fruit, lighted with large silver candelabra, was something to make the mouth of any boy water. ‘Gee whiz,’ said one youngster; ‘hully gee,’ came from another, and so on, as their delighted eyes rested on the bright and tempting spread.
There were four large tables which accommodated 225 at a sitting, as as the boys were marshaled they presented an interesting study in human nature. Every type was represented, some bright, sharp, alert, others stolid, weak, and sickly. Each was told to remove his hat, and it must be confessed that the boy who presented a clean pair of hands and a clean face was the exception. There was every degree of cleanliness, and every grade of thrift from the painfully ragged and shabby boy to those who made a pretense of being ‘dressed up.’
As they were seated there began such a clatter and rattle of knives and forks that it was impossible to ‘hear one’s self think.’ The boys were finally induced to keep silence while Senator Armstrong addressed a few words of welcome to them. At the close the boys gave a cheer for the speaker as only boys can give.
Then they ‘fell too’ with a will, and the viands disappeared before these healthy appetites like magic. They didn’t stand on ceremony; not they. Before they were fairly seated they maid raids upon the centerpiece of fruit, and in a twinkling it had disappeared. The Messrs. Garson were all alert watching out for the youngsters, and quick to see distress among them. One youngster was crying because ‘someone stole my ticket.’ but he did not lose his dinner for all that.
Some of the boys used their knives and forks, others dispensed with that formality, but the food reached their mouths much the same. Evidently some did not know about the pie; it is probable they had never been introduced to this American confection. One little fellow looked it over and tried this way and that to cut it, and finally succeeded, conveying an ample piece as large as his fist to his mouth. It was evident the pie had made a hit with him.
Young Emanuel Jacubowitz was a shining example of the up-to-date newsboy. His bright face was clean and smiling; he was neatly dressed, and an honor to his calling. It was Emanuel who, mounted on the counter, made the address of thanks to Mr. Garson in behalf of his fellow workers for his kindness and hospitality to the boys. It was a manly speech, and moved all who heard it to admiration of the boy. Emanuel did not crowd in at the first table; he waited modestly inside until Mr. Garson insisted that he find a good seat and have his dinner.
About 1,000 boys were fed. As they filed out of the Main street door to make way for others, not only their stomachs but their pockets and jackets were filled. Wherever they could tuck away an apple or a banana there it disappeared. Teall prepared 110 turkeys, and several cases of oranges and barrels of apples and bananas were consumed.

“Topeka Man Will Double Whatever Fifty Chosen Ones Save During the Year”
“J.E. Nissley, a prominent citizen here, will pay 100 percent, interest on deposits of more than $25 a year made by the newsboys of Topeka. He has arranged with a savings bank to supply fifty newsboys with passbooks tomorrow and on Thanksgiving Day of next year he will give in cash the premiums named.
Last Thanksgiving Day Mr. Nissley gave a turkey dinner to eighty newsboys and to nearly half of this number he gave suits of clothes. Through Nissley’s efforts many newsboys here have saved money, some assisting widowed mothers to purchase homes.”
