The dinner at the Buffalo home was provided by the board of managers and the board of trustees. Compared to some of the other dinners in other parts of New York that I’ve shared about, the one in Buffalo was smaller in comparison, with thousands of boys reportedly showing up in New York City (where several lodging houses held dinners) and in Rochester (where the dinner was held at a department store, rather than the lodging house).
Moxie and some other newsboys, those who are not residents at the Home, also attended. I’ll post more on Moxie later, but he lived at home with his father, and being older than some of the other boys, had already established a lucrative corner for himself, and had several younger boys who worked for him in turn, hence his following.

The boys gathered in the school room at the Duane Street Lodging House, and were than brought in 200 at a time in to the dining room. I’ll include a transcription under the cut. The dinner was paid for by William Waldorf Astor. Dinners were also held at all the city’s prisons.
“The ‘strikers’ and the ‘scabs’ of recent memory sat down together in peace and harmony and all, with a common impulse, reached way over their plates loaded with turkey and vegetables and grabbed their pumpkin pies.
‘That’s a regular trick of the newsies,’ explained the superintendent. ‘They always eat pie first.’“

“By 6 o’clock last night Park Row, City Hall Park, and the Bridge entrance were bare of newsboys. They had gone to the Newsboys’ Lodging House in Duane street. A thousand of them were corralled in the big school room, and then at a signal from the dining room were allowed to leak out, 200 at a time, and rush to their annual feast of turkey. The ‘strikers’ and the ‘scabs’ of recent memory sat down together in peace and harmony and all, with a common impulse, reached way over their plates loaded with turkey and vegetables and grabbed their pumpkin pies. Not a wishbone was touched so long as any pie was left in sight.
‘That’s a regular trick of the newsies,’ explained the superintendent. ‘They always eat pie first.’
Toward the middle of the meal, when the initial fierceness was somewhat abated, the boys picked up sprigs of celery and stuck them in their buttonholes. It didn’t seem to occur to any of them to eat the celery. As soon as a boy finished his dinner he was sent to the gymnasium with permission to use the apparatus.
William Waldorf Astor, through his agent, furnished the money for the dinner.
Thanksgiving dinners were also provided at the Boys’ Lodging House in Forty-fourth street; at the Boys’ Lodging House, Tompkins Square; at the West Side Boys’ Lodging House and at the Fogg Lodging House for Girls, 552 West Forty-second street. Turkey dinners were served in all the city prisons and at the institutions on Blackwell’s, Randall’s and Ward’s Islands.”
