== First London Billboard Meet Up==

The first day of the London Billboards had a wonderful meetup of various UK fans! The billboard was visible from Leicaster Square and had a whole lot of foot traffic throughout the day!

Our lovely friend @queerly-autistic / QueerlyAutistic on Twitter made it to the billboard as well!

The UK Crew also got to see some Box Trucks!

I am very sad about the final-final news that OFMD may be done, at least for the foreseeable future, but I'm not done with fandom or creating within this lovely world we were given. There's so much more to explore, friendships to build, connections to make, things to learn, efforts to support - if you want that.

Earlier this week I wrote and posted a fic based on this giraffe-centaur comic as a birthday gift for my OFMD Animorphs AU collab author. It's meant to make @ghostalservice and everyone else who reads it smile. Stede (a blue, furry, four-eyed mouthless centaur-deerlike alien) contends with, and loses dramatically to, a vending machine. But don't worry, his boyfriend (his boyfriend!) Ed will sort him out.

In any event, I am deeply sad about OFMD and hope it has a future despite the depressing news David Jenkins shared with us this week. He, Rhys, Taika, and the rest of the cast and crew have given us something deeply monumental and special. It remains ours, it will stay meaningful. I'm gonna be the epitome of that "OK grandma" meme one day talking about OFMD 🤣 and, like Ed says while folding socks, that's OK. (Pretty great actually.)

So, I continue! I enjoy writing and reading fic, hyping people, teasing out new ideas, talking about the show, playing in the sandbox, making meaning and meaningful connections. That brings me joy.

Love to everyone involved with OFMD and the fandom, however you interact with it. 🏴‍☠️🏳️‍🌈

What can I say crew, other than this sucks. I still have a sliver of hope that David will be able to bring the pirates back in one form or another someday, but until then, I'm feeling pretty down about what happened. I just wanted some domestic Ed and Stede and a Gentlebeard wedding, man. That's it 😭

With all that said, would anyone still be interested in OFMD enamel pins? I have a few designs that I thought would be cute besides my little mermen. It would be nice to know if anyone would still want to buy even though the show is over.

Also rest assured, I'm not going to stop drawing my boys for a long while! I may even dip into the Taika/Rhysiverse and draw some of the other pairings (Vianton, Freemanji, etc 😆)

Things I'm doing today to cope with the news that OFMD won't be finding a new home:

Cry. Duh.

An eye mask, to deal with the side effects of crying. Roach and Fang would approve. Self-care is sooo important.

I'm going to have my first appointment with a new therapist. The decision to finally start therapy was a direct result of a Rhys Cameo hitting a bit too close to home, and then supported by friends I made in this fandom.

I'm going to support some artists by purchasing some OFMD merch.

I've purchased a Blu-Ray of the show off eBay. I've seen so many helpful guides around torrents, etc., but the sad fact is I am lazy about learning new technology and just want to be able to watch on my TV with no effort.

I'm going to read at least one fic that's been on my MFL for ages and leave the author lots of love.

I'm going to noodle on my own WIPs, and if I'm able to get the energy, I'm even going to write.

It's a gorgeous day outside, so I'm going to go for a walk and enjoy the sunshine. Captain's orders.

I'm going to take every opportunity I can to shower our crew with love. I'll be honest, my heart is very fragile right now and I'm not sure if I'm really up for, let's say, enthusiastic loving? But once I've recovered a bit I am going to be SMOTHERING all of you with love. (And in the meantime, please know there's still plenty of room in the blanket fort and I am giving you all the tightest of hugs.)

Hope you all are finding ways to get through. Always here for anyone who needs to chat, mutuals or not. I may not be able to respond right away because, well, see above. I'm having a day! And so should all of you. Much love. 💕

Before I watched OFMD for the first time, I was on the verge of giving up. At that point in my life, I'd been in a toxic relationship for nearly a decade, and after several failed attempts at leaving, I began to retreat more and more inside myself. I was truly treading water and waiting to drown. I was self-medicating, not caring if I lived or died.

OFMD gave me air. It gave me a buoy to hold onto. I saw this wonderful gaggle of queers form a beautiful bond, go through their traumas, find love, and find themselves. I saw these relationships and thought, "this is how I want to be loved." I wanted that found family. I wanted that person who was understanding, and soft, and kind. I wanted to be that person who was understanding, soft and kind. OFMD made me think that maybe I could have that. Maybe it wasn't too late.

I genuinely believe that this show helped me keep my head above water. About a year later, I was finally able to leave the life that was killing me. Even though I'm still dealing with a lot of uncertainty and pain, I know that it was the best decision I could've made for myself.

I'll forever be grateful for OFMD.

Pirate's Life, Short but Nice

I’m definitely sad, and I’m definitely angry—I already canceled my Max subscription—but right now, instead of focusing on what Max took, I want to think about what this show gave.

First of all, I’m so grateful to Our Flag Means Death for giving us a season 2 finale that could function as a series finale in the event that they weren’t allowed to make their planned third season. I’m glad that most of the characters were left in a good place for us to imagine their continuing adventures. If the show had been canceled after season 1, that would’ve been wrenching. I’ll always wish we could get the proper ending that David Jenkins and co. imagined, but I’m so grateful for what we got.

I’m thankful to the entire production. From the brilliant writers to the tremendous cast to the talented crew, every single one of them left it all on the mat. The costumes, the direction, the effects. The banter, the speeches, the unspoken interactions. The amazing DIY lighthouse, Stede’s beautiful mermaid tale, Lucius’s bizarre book of Ed-fixated sketches. The needle drops, the delightful improv, the fantastic episode endings that had me champing at the bit for the following Thursday.

These actors never missed. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi were positively born to play Stede and Ed. Both of them poured their hearts into these characters from the second they appeared onscreen, and their chemistry together was playful, effortless, and soulful. The whole crew was simply amazing: Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Samba Schutte, Joel Fry, Kristian Nairn, Matthew Maher, Ewen Bremner, Nat Faxon, Con O’Neil, David Fane, Guz Khan, and Madeleine Sami. Not one of them wasted a single line delivery or reaction shot. I’m glad we got a chance to meet fantastic new characters like Zheng Yi Sao and Auntie—Ruibo Qian and Anapela Polataivao both fit this show like a glove—and I loved our terrific cast of recurring characters and guest stars, from Leslie Jones to Claudia O’Doherty to Will Arnett.

Everyone put their absolute all into this beautiful, hilarious, sad, weird, hopeful little show. I’ve never seen queer representation treated with so much depth and nuance—nobody is doing it like Our Flag Means Death. Season 2 came along right as I was reckoning with my neurodivergence, and this wonderful found family of damaged oddballs helped me find much greater understanding of myself. Thank you so much to everyone who lent their imaginations to put this loving, lovely story onscreen.
