How to Repository Identical Hair Textures & Remove Unneeded Ages

This is heavily inspired by @pforestsims‘s tutorial that covers essentially the same thing, but I wanted to go into detail about the specifics of approaching it with hair.

I also thought it might be helpful to explain it at the level of having mastered the basics and wanting to advance just one rung above, because that’s where I’m at with CC creation. So if you’ve used SimPE at least once before, and know how to retexture a hair, I’m hoping this will be usable for you!

When I say “mastered the basics” I mean I still use Bodyshop to retexture hair lol. This process saves time in that case, because you only have to retexture one (1) age’s group of textures, and skip any that are identical or unneeded (like the default BG toddler hair).

After retexturing one set of unique textures, click Import to Game, quit Bodyshop, then open the resulting package file in SimPE.

First we’ll get rid of the ages that aren’t needed. Click on Property Set.

The default BG hairs for ages that don’t have a mesh should be easy to spot. In this case it’s PU, CF, and TF.

Select all the unneeded ages’ hairs, right click & Delete.

The hairs will now have a strike through them, and when the package is saved they disappear from the list.

Next go to Material Definition.

Same thing: Under Resource List, select all the unneeded ages, right click & Delete.

Now go to Texture Image.

Again we’re deleting the unneeded ages, and since the TXTR file names aren’t all that helpful just click on each one to bring up the preview image. They should be easy to spot because they’ll look totally different from the one you retextured.

Find each one, right click, Delete.

This TXTR is technically the “right” one, but it’s identical to an existing texture so it gets deleted too.

At this point you can Save the package & all the unneeded files will disappear.

The only remaining TXTR files are the 2 unique ones that were retextured, so now we’re going to repository all the ages with meshes to those 2 textures.

Click on one of the TXTRs, select & copy the string of numbers/letters under Filename (don’t include “_txtr” on the end).

Click on Material Definition.

Since this retexture was based on the Adult version of the hair, the TXMTs for AF will be our reference point.

Click on the Adult TXMT and look at “stdMatBaseTextureName” under Properties. The numbers/letters string should match the one we copied.

This hair has 2 different TXTRs, so finding this match tells you that all the TXMTs with a name ending in “Alpha” will use the TXTR filename we copied.

Technically this hair has 2 alpha textures, but they were identical so we’re only using one TXTR for both.

Click another age’s “Alpha” TXMT.

Click on “stdMatBaseTextureName” under Properties.

In the “Value” box on the right, paste the number/letter string copied from the TXTR filename. Click Commit.

Repeat for all the different ages with “Alpha” in the name.

Now we go back to Texture Image for the second TXTR.

Again, copy the number/letter string under Filename.

Again, you can double check it’s the right TXTR by looking at the remaining TXMT for AF you haven’t changed yet.

The “stdMatBaseTextureName” should match this second TXTR.

Paste the TXTR filename into “stdMatBaseTextureName” for each ages’ remaining TXMT (don’t forget to click Commit on each one).

Save the package file.

That should be it!

If you open it in Bodyshop, all the ages with a mesh should be properly textured and any that didn’t have a mesh should be gone now.

Final note: This step can be saved for later, but the difference that removing unneeded files & repositorying textures makes won’t be fully seen until you run the package through The Compressorizor.

fhairdreadlockshort and mhairdreadlockshort replaced with GP08 Flat Twist Updo, 4t2 by Rented-Space, Simgarooped by @deedee-sims, CU-EU, 4K polys. It’s basically this default by @daruebersims, but I wanted both genders to share textures, and I wanted it for AM-EM without replacing mhairsemibald. I found a hidden clone of amhairdreadlocklong that share the same family with tmhairdreadlockshort, so that’s what I’ve replaced. That means that this may conflict with mhairdreadlocklong replacements (if the creator bothered to replace this hidden clone). This hair (as many Maxis hairs) had different property sets for CM and CF, which bothered me, so I’ve included only the CM one in this default, and enabled this for both genders.

fhairrosettes replaced with Okruee Cleo, 4t2 by @socialbunny, CF-EF, 11K polys. Thanks to @peppermint-ginger I learned that this hair has the same mapping than GP08 Flat Twist Updo, so I’ve used the same textures by DeeDee. That means that you can download this default repositoried to the one above, or standalone.

Compatible with my default for uhairdreadlockshort, but beware that it will conflict with others. If you want to use it with other default replacement you can get rid of the cu package of this set.

mhairclosecrop texture replacement by Bergatory yet again, but I used a default replacement by Aquilegia as a base (because Bergatory’s has duplicated textures and bumpmaps and I didn’t understood the way it was made). I recoloured it in the colours I use, for CM-EM.

I saw on snap (this was a while ago but I took the other shit out cause I’m not in the mood to fight those people and we’re already upset for why tf not uwu fuck off) that this family that I found a mouthful to even think about decided to name one of their kids Sparrow. Like...good god. It’s like that fucking Honda cf all over again don’t fucking name your kid Sparrow. White people, Asians, black people, Mexicans, don’t fucking name your fucking kids Sparrow. Like, I, sis I don’t know how to tell you this but there is no meaning behind it to you unless you are Native American and even then you don’t just pop out your mini me and name them after things in nature. That’s not how it works, that’s not how we do things around here. Don’t do it to be hip and edgy like don’t fucking, bruh. I don’t know why but recently I’ve been real upset with things that I see that are literally as simple as a name or when someone takes a really amazing video down of art they did because people get upset for actually no reason or when they got rid of Mia because bitches were complaining that she was racist and other complete nonsense and certain styles that I see as my own culture and no one bats an eye over it and just I get so upset these days and I hate it. Ever since I wanted to learn more about myself and who my family is and being proud of our culture I find myself more sensitive and I fucking hate it y’all. I truly hate being so sensitive over this kind of stuff. And I really never feel like just straight up making several long posts about the specific problems that are bothering me because I know I will get shit from people just because, even if I’m talking about my culture and my people but I honestly feel like we’re being erased over and over and over again and when we don’t stick up for ourselves and others demand for things to get removed instead of being represented it just, I mean what’s the fucking point? If people would rather delete our cultures and any kind of representation that we have other than keeping it as an opportunity to learn more and discover things about us and help keep our people and culture alive then what’s the point of even saying anything?

God I’m getting so offtrack wow. Anyway, don’t name your fucking kid ‘Sparrow’ for fucks sake thanks.
