i think one reason I don’t like discovery mirror universe plots is that the whole point of the mirror universe originally was that it was kind of a parody--it works for goofy plots in ds9, and the original somewhat wacky and melodramtic plot in TOS, but discovery takes it too damn seriously. i think that’s why georgiou’s character works a bit better in the start of season 3--she’s more comic relief than anything else.
i do appreciate that they’re clearly getting some of their aesthetic stylings from warhammer 40k though

Paul Guilfoyle again - gloves and cigar
Tumblr media
From Star Trek Discovery - Terra Firma parts 1 and 2.
Tumblr media
As promised, more Guilfoyle pics. OK, I might have posted one or two of them before, but he bears repeating.
Tumblr media
So what do we have to get my organs aching? Leather gloves, cigar, bowler hat, suit and overcoat.
Tumblr media
The man would look good in just a ropey vest and pair of underpants, he's that handsome, and I wouldn't mind seeing him like that anyway.
Tumblr media
But here he is looking sharp, and that really gets me going. Then you give this man a cigar to smoke and suddenly he's in a different league.
Tumblr media
Of course, the costume department made one serious sartorial mistake: he should have been wearing a bow tie. Shameful error of judgement.

PART 1, PART 2 and PART 3
Part 4
Once Soap came back from the bathroom, he was on his way to meet up with Ghost in the mess hall.
He began humming to himself
She seems like an interesting one Soap had thought to himself. Ghost had mentioned that you had a practically useless file which was mostly redacted.
Soap grew further suspicious once you handed over that piece of shite form to Ghost.
He's hoping Price knows what he is doing... Of course Price knows what he's doing... But that whole mix-up with you being charged for malpractice? That's a pretty big deal
Although he could say the same for their previous Doctor who was too much of a fan of glue in the field.
His thought process engulfed him has he nearly hit the door to the mess hall.
Has he entered the mess hall, he saw Ghost, facing the window watching the remains of the sunset. It was an odd sight... Usually he doesn't keep his back to the door.. Soap pondered
Ghost had his arms crossed, he was leaning against the table nearest to the window.
"Alright L.t?" Soap says once he got near him.. Ghost still had not turned to give him usual glare of this nickname that he would grunt at.
"Notice' you took photos of her" Ghost finally said, turning to face Soap, his arms still across his chest, letting out a sigh.
Oh yeah Soap thought
"I figured we needed intel L.t" Soap said, grabbing his phone out from his pocket and getting the photo he took. "Her forms, and file, like you said were redacted. Heavily"
"Yeah, well that was the usual with Shepherd back then" Ghost said, unfolding his arms and coming over to Soap to view the photo he took of you.
"Even you raised your suspicions sir" Soap said, handing over his phone to Ghost.
Ghost took the phone and held the photo of you in his gloved hands. You were looking at the sunset. He zoomed in, without even thinking about it.
Your face was still lit from the sun setting in the horizon, the orange and pink bleeding across the sky.
The way your eyes lit up from the light of the sunset, that change in colour. There was a softer 'ping' in his chest again, not as sharp as the first.
Not even Johnny's camera could capture a view like that Ghost thought.
'Hmmm'' Ghost says, the gears in his head grinding. He handed the phone back to Soap and crossed his arms again.
Is it really you after all these years? Ghost pondered There was a sense of familiarity with those eyes
Trauma does heavy damage to the brain, so many soldiers have come and gone, and most of them have blurred into one face. The name rang a bell, but he still couldn't picture you from all those years ago.
"Price said she worked here before" Soap said, trying to fill the silence whilst Ghost did his usual quiet analysis.
"Yeah, long time ago" Ghost responded
"Did you know her then?" Soap said puzzlingly. How could he keep this from him Soap thought
"Only from when I dug up some info in the archives" Ghost said
"What archives?!" Soap shrieked
"Restricted access kind" Ghost said back to him "She was a rookie under my ol' Captain"
'What Captain?" Soap asked. Just has felt like he fit into this place and was getting to know Ghost, something new had to ambush him.
Ghost noted the continued level of shock rising in Soap, so much so that his arms started to flap a bit.
"That's classified I believe" Ghost said, he noted a bigger wave and and even shocked expression expanding across Soap "I'll talk to Price 'nd see if we can tell ya Johnny" Ghost added, giving a brief tap on his arms and started to walk to the door.
"Is she dangerous?" Soap asked "After Graves.." Soap started
Ghost whipped around
"No. She's nothin' like that" Ghost quipped back.
Nothing like that bastard Ghost thought
"Sorry sir, didn't mean.." Soap said
"It's fine, you have questions, c'mon let's find Price" Ghost says, heading out of the door.
The both of them headed down the corridor to Price's office
Explainin' this mess to Johnny is going to be... interestin' Ghost thought to himself.
As they reached Price's office, Ghost knocked on the door
"Come in" Price yelled
As they entered they saw Price at his desk, soft jazz playing in the background whilst he typed away on his computer. As Ghost and Soap entered he looked up.
"Ah lads, you read my mind!" Price exclaimed
"Yeah, we needed to talk about some things.." Soap started again. He wanted to get right down to it, and was hoping Price wasn't going to send them to do some menial task when there was a juicy part of history to lap up.
"Yes, I gathered as much." Price said, finishing off typing on his computer, he gestured to the both of them to have a seat on his sofa in his office.
Ghost and Soap took a seat and waited for Price to join them on the small armchair opposite the sofa with a small table in between.
"Guessing you have questions about the new doctor?" Price says smiling at both of them leaning forward as he sat down.
"That and this old Captain?" Soap said suddenly
Price's head looked up from Soap to Ghost, Ghost's eyes darted from Price to Soap's who was still looking at Price.
"What'd you know?" Price says curiously leaning back in the chair.
"That our new medic - well doctor worked under him and that Ghost knows and I don't" Soap responded
"I know a lotta things that you don't Johnny" Ghost said, suppressing a small laugh
Soap turned to Ghost, frowning at him and turned back to Price
"The Captain, was Captain David MacAlasdair, a friend and colleague" Price started
"A fellow Scotsman?" Soap chirped
"Yeah, from Glasgow" Price added "He took under a few cadets and trained them up through the army and most them signed up and passed into the the early beginnings of the 141, before it was called the 141." Price reminisced.
"Codenamed Blue, our new doctor, was one of the cadets that the Captain trained. On a mission to obtain intel at a Russian base in Siberia, the Captain was captured and executed." Price says
"Jesus" Soap whispered a lot of shit went down here in the past that he had no idea about he thought Bad things have happened to too many good soldiers. Too many good men have lost their lives
"The Captain took Blue with him, she wanted to progress further in her career here so she went on this mission" Price continues.
Ghost's eyes widened. He didn't realise that one mission that you went on was that one.
"After the mission went south, contact was lost and we thought she was either KIA or MIA. She made contact with our Russian friend, Nik, and then came home."
"Why did the mission go bad?" Soap asked
"We do not know. The file Shepherd gave was redacted" Price huffed
"Yeh, a two pager turned into 7 words" Ghost gruffed
"Seen the file then?" Price asked Ghost
Ghost nodded back, wanting to hear more of the story.
"Why did she leave?" Soap asks, he felt like he was pestering Price, but he couldn't help it. He needed answers.
"Her choice." Price said, sighing deeply bringing his left hand to scratch his beard.
"She left, and went to medical school. Always knew that one had some top tier brains." Price resumed
"What about this malpractice issue" Soap asked without even thinking.
"That's a whole misunderstanding, and I believe she should be the one to tell you" Price stated
"What's her name?" Soap blurted
"Jeez Johnny, what is this? 21 questions?" Ghost sighed
"Lt, you saw her file, nothing on there." Soap replied rolling his eyes.
"Ghost, you don't remember her?" Price asked
"Vaguely" Ghost responded.
Price got up from his chair, and went to a standing cabinet near his desk, he went through the files and papers until he picked a small white envelope up. He then walked back over to the sofa where Ghost and Soap sat.
Soap perked up at the sight of the envelope.
He opened the envelope, which revealed a small collection of photographs, and flicking through, he found the right one.
"Hope this jogs the brain" Price said handing a photo to Ghost smiling slightly
Ghost took ahold of the photo. All of a sudden a switch triggered in his head when he laid eyes on that photo.
Soap moved towards Ghost to get a better look.
The Captain and you. You had the goofiest face; crossed eyes and your mouth, baring your teeth and the Captain, facing you, was there laughing. Both of you dressed in combat gear, ready for a mission or training? The Captain wearing his beret and you... had shorter hair. A pixie cut with the left hand side shaved.
That 'ping' in his chest flickered again. Deep within his brain the memory of you resurfaced. You were one of the five cadets trained by the Captain and before he was the Ghost...
"This was before the Captain's last mission" Price said, eyeing Soap's curious face.
"She looks completely different now" Soap said, noting your short hair and slimmer build.
"That tends to happen as people age Soap" Price chuckled, sitting back down in his chair.
Ghost continued to look at the photo. He could faintly hear your laugh from all those years ago.
"She thinks I'm dead" Ghost finally says, giving the photo back to Price
"How?" Soap asks
"She knew Ghost as Simon Riley" Price answered.
Ghost nodded
Of course Soap thought, all these revelations about her had made him forget that Ghost was a ghost...
"That's your decision of when you want to tell her Simon" Price said, using his name this time.
Ghost looked up at Price.
"Gonna be a bit difficult" Ghost says
"Would you rather she found out if you're injured or from someone else?" Price explained, slightly nudging his head towards Soap, unbeknownst to Soap himself.
Ghost sighed. Of course I need to tell her he thought
"Where is she now?" Price asked This will be interesting to see how Simon deals with this
"Infirmary" Ghost replied
"Right, guess I better go see her before she starts wondering the base" Price said, getting up.
Ghost and Soap also got up from the sofa and then walked to the door of Price's office.
"Johnny, go ahead, I need to have a word alone with Price" Ghost said
Soap looked at Ghost curiously, and then walked out, Ghost made sure the door was closed before turning to Price.
"What is it Simon?" Price asked
"I err.." Ghost started, he looked at the ground and shifted his weight from one foot to the other.
Price looked Ghost cautiously.
"Ruhari, I called her that name" Ghost said finally
Price chuckled, shaking his head
"Of course you did" Price said "So you did remember her?" Price asked
Ghost grunted. He dug himself a hole and now he's ready to be buried.
"She is going to ask how you knew her name" Price stated, crossing his arms. "I'm not going to tell her Simon, but you need to tell her, she deserves that at least" Price said unfolding his arms and raising his right arm to pat Ghost on the shoulder.
"Yes sir" Ghost replied
Ghost edged towards the door, opening it and they walked out.
"I'll cover you this time" Price said, as they both stood in the hallway as he locked his office.
Ghost nodded and watched Price walk off to the infirmary.
Taking a deep breathe, Ghost put his hand in his front pocket to retrieve the key for your room. He walked down the hallway and found himself outside her soon-to-be room. A thin gold plaque was on the door that had a red cross on it. He unlocked the door and looked inside.
It was barren. Soon to be occupied by her.
The image of her trembling legs flickered in his mind. Her demeanour has changed. She wasn't the same person from before he thought.
Ghost left the room, not locking it, but made his way to an airing cupboard nearby that had spare towels, bedsheets and blankets in it. Pulling out two warm towels, he walked back to the room he was just in and placed the towels on the end of the bed.
He walked over to the window, staring outside. The sun had disappeared, the sky a mixture of dark and light blue. He sighed and then walked towards the door.
He turned around and looked at the towels he brought her, laying on the bed.
How am I going to get out of this one he thought.
Ghost opened the door and left the room, locking the door and made his way to the infirmary. Back to see you again.

Hi! Thanks so much for all your fic recommendations and analysis posts! They are fantastic!
I was wondering if in your travels you had come across any fics that rewrite season 9, so that Mulder didn't leave, BUT also keep going with something that looks like the plot of season 9. Not necessarily the exact plot (since it’s bonkers), but something where Mulder and Scully have to deal with the larger Mytharc while being parents. Falling In And In by Aloysia_Virgata is the closest I’ve come to what I’m looking for.
And just to be clear, I love fics like Terra Firma by Malibusunset and Hurricane Season by Beduini and Rah, but they aren’t quite what I’m looking for in this case.
Thanks!!!
YES I HAVE! (Thanks for the compliments~.) I did my best sticking to this very, VERY specific niche. Some of these include Mulder left but Scully joined him later:
Mulder Doesn't Leave But the Mytharc Continues
Lapsed_Scholar's MASTERFUL fill-in series: Mulder is a stay-at-home dad during the entire events of S9 (including the cat autopsy scene.) Love this to death; and it further cemented my hatred of canonical S9, so there's that: Season 9 Rewrites and Musings - Lapsed_Scholar - The X-Files [Archive of Our Own]
ML/ML_is_me’s (Ao3, Gossamer, DW, Invidiosa)
Mulder is a stay-at-home dad battling the Conspiracy. Scully and their new partner get a call and drop-in from Phoebe, who is relatives with a higher-up:
1/ Project:TruthSeekers Alt Season Nine: Home Fires, Part One - ML_is_me, spookyawards_archivist - The X-Files [Archive of Our Own] Goss Gossamer | Story: "The New Truth, A Project 09x04 - Home Fires 01" by ML
2/ Project:TruthSeekers Alt Season Nine: Home Fires, Part Two - ML_is_me, spookyawards_archivist - The X-Files [Archive of Our Own] Goss Gossamer | Story: "The New Truth, A Project 09x04 - Home Fires 02" by ML AU/INTP marvels that ISTJ tracked him down w/ Will-- Gossamer | Story: "155 Words - Thankful" by ML
@baronessblixen's short AU covers a S9 nightmare Mulder had: (53) Hate is always foolish and love is always wise on Tumblr Ao3 Just A Dream - Baroness_Blixen - The X-Files [Archive of Our Own]
@o6666666's (Ao3) 20. As we huddle together, the storm raging outside--  Untitled — 20 (tumblr.com)-- is an invasion story where Mulder and fam bunk out to escape the aliens.
jeri's (MC) fic focuses on a case Monica and Doggett bust in connection to Marita. Mulder is in the background being a stay-at-home, mentioned occasionally by Scully: Ahonis (mulderscreek.com) Goss Gossamer | Story: "Ahonis" by jeri
@aloysiavirgata has a long series about Mulder and Scully parenting a specially-abled Will, ending with mytharc Colonization:
By Falling In and In
LiveJournal 2
LiveJournal 3
LiveJournal 4
LiveJournal 5
Other assorted S9 fics w/ dashes of By Falling In and In are:
A Heart of Star-- Mulder has bonding moments with his growing son
Elysium-- Scully has bonding moments with her son growing up
Mulder Left, Scully Joined-- Mytharc Flavored
touchstona's epic that diverges from your idea only slightly-- Mulder is on the run; but Scully hauls Will out to him with her. The series is long and beautiful, touching on their entire relationship but mostly the wounds of S8 he has yet to address. She also reforms the entire mytharc while only using tools the show's writers gave us. Stunning work:
Part 1/ Amor Fati: Destinata (The Fated Love), Act One: Desiderium (The Longing) - touchstoneaf - The X-Files [Archive of Our Own]
Part 2/ Amor Fati: Destinata (The Fated Love), Act Two: Et Perierat et Inventus Est (The Lost and the Found) - touchstoneaf - The X-Files [Archive of Our Own]
Part 3/ Amor Fati: The Fated Love, Act Three: Tres Discendens (The Leaving of the Three) - touchstoneaf - The X-Files [Archive of Our Own]
Tess (Ao3) and Jacquie LaVa's fic covers Byers escorting Scully and Will to Mulder to Christmas. Mulder convinces her to stay: xfms.xffics.com/stillstillstill.txt Goss Gossamer | Story: "Still, Still, Still" by Tess & LaVa, Jacquie
Tess also writes about Scully being shoved back to the FBI for resources since Mulder is on the outs. The conspiracy rages on: Gossamer | Story: "The New Truth, A Project 09x00 - Prologue, A New Beginning" by Tess
ML/ML_is_me’s (Ao3, Gossamer, DW, Invidiosa) Slightly off topic-- Scully tracks Mulder down with Will in tow: Gossamer | Story: "155 Words - Thankful" by ML
Does this count? Gillian Leigh's (MC) AU diverts from canon midway? when Mulder gets a vision from his future daughter warning against the adoption. He goes back, packs up Scully, his fam, and hers, and hides out in a civilization bunker. Samantha's there, too: Visitor in the Desert (mulderscreek.com) Goss Gossamer | Story: "Visitor in the Desert" by Leigh, Gillian
I have more; but this is long enough as it is! XDDDD
Hope these all do somethin' fer ye~!

Ok, so as I said in my post about that article where Kurtzman basically said that filler episodes should be avoided in Star Trek, I started talking about Farscape in the tags, but it started getting too long, so I want to make a separate post.
I was thinking about "filler" episodes in Farscape, and as I was looking through Farscape episodes, I realized that a lot of Farscape episodes can be considered "filler". I've recently started calling them "stand alone" eps, though. It sounds more accurate. I noticed that most of the time in Farscape, the major plot advances are in the multiple-episode arcs a couple times per season. Like, most of season 1 was what you would call standalone eps. Did it further the plot of "the peacekeepers are after us and John has wormhole knowledge that Scorpius will do anything to get?" mostly no. We see it in Nerve/Hidden Memory, and then at the end of the season in Family Ties. Then in Mind the baby (2x01) they're still inside of the main story arc of dealing with the peacekeepers who are after them and putting Talyn in danger also. Episode 5 is important for a lot of backstory (but also character driven). And then we don't get into any more major movement of the plot until the Look At the Princess trilogy (s2 eps 11-13).
And then the next time the plot gets moved forward is in the Liars, Guns, and Money trilogy (s2 eps 19-21), and then in Die Me, Dichotomy and Season of Death (s2 ep 22 and s3 ep 1).
And then Self-Inflicted Wounds parts 1 and 2 (s3 eps 3-4). Then ep 6 (Eat Me) is critical to the storyline of the rest of the season.
Actually, I'm looking at the season 3 eps, and season 3 is a pretty equal balance between plot advancement and character/relationship development. But especially with the multi-part episodes like the Infinite Possibilities 2-parter, and the Into the Lion's Den 2-parter there's plot advancement.
The season 4 eps 2-3 are major plot episodes. And then no more plot-heavy eps until Unrealized Reality, Kansas, and Terra Firma (eps 11-13). and I guess the rest of the season is actually pretty plot heavy except for ep 14. It doesn't sacrifice the character interaction and development, but the plot is moved forward or is key to the overall arc for the rest of the series after that.
So really, only less than a 3rd of Farscape episodes further the overall story along. Most other episodes are important for character development and world building. Some of them are true stand alones in that there isn't really a lot of character development, either, just kind of like a fun ep (Like Through the Looking Glass or John Quixote).
So idk, it's kind of like there are 3 types of episodes in a lot of shows. I'm thinking of Farscape, Firefly, Fringe, and Star Trek here (like TOS, TNG, VOY, DS9). There are plot heavy episodes that contribute to the overall plot or main story arc, episodes that develop characters either in relation to the plot or just backstories, and then eps that nothing really happens except a fun adventure. With Firefly I actually don't really know if they developed a min storyline yet, except for the whole thing with River. I guess that was supposed to be the main arc? But most episodes were kind of standalone eps. Like adventure of the week kinds of things which allowed for character development and character interactions/relationship development. Fringe had a bunch of "monster of the week" episodes. Some of them gave character backstories or expanded what we know about the characters, but didn't really push the arc forward (or at least you didn't realize it at the time, but like 10 episodes later it turned out to be something significant lol).
But shows like Gilmore Girls... I guess shows like that are character driven most of the time. Most of the story arcs had to do with relationships. And there were arcs like Lorelai and Sookie opening their own inn, and there were a couple episodes that almost fully revolved around that. But it doesn't really have one main storyline or arc. Even sitcoms are like this. the story arcs are usually relationship related and each ep is kind of stand alone.
I'm thinking this main storyline and filler episode thing is unique to scifi shows, actually??? Specifically the "old" ones before they started making shows that only have 6-13 episode seasons.
New Star Trek series like Picard and Discovery are 98% plot and 2% character or relationship stuff. Same with a show I watched recently called Emergence. Character relationships were developed, but every episode contributed to the one storyline. Also currently watching Containment and it's the same way. Both of those shows had 13 episodes.

IL MONDO SI ACCORDA PER PROTEGGERE GLI OCEANI
Tumblr media

Fic: Tracy Seaside Orchard and Farm - Part 13 (Chapter 7)
Tumblr media
Summary: Alternate Universe. Gordon is a farmer. And he seems to have nothing to do with International Rescue. Now on AO3!   Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Family.
*Warnings have been updated to include phobias and panic attacks* Please be aware for this chapter. The section with the panic attack will be marked for you to skip, but note that this story will continue to explore the aftermath.
I do think this will answer some of those pending questions you all have. :)
New to this fic? Please be aware for this story that parts are posted in sections here on tumblr before I upload the chapter to Ao3. Chapter 6 has been updated on Ao3 and will bring you to caught up. Chapter 7 is long enough on its own, and we will likely continue with this length as this story continues and concludes, now that we are in the heavier material. I should probably tell you, the links below are right. When you get to Ao3, the prologue has thrown off the chapter count.
Prologue here Chapter 1: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Ao3 Chapter 2: Part 4 | Part 5  | AO3 Chapter 3: Part 6  | Part 7 |  Ao3 Chapter 4: Part 8 | Part 9 | Ao3 Chapter 5: Part 10 | Part 11  | Ao3 Chapter 6 Part 12 | Ao3 Chapter 7: Part 13 | Ao3 [You are Here]
A/N: There’s still so much love.
It’s been awhile since I acknowledged thank yous - so to @gumnut-logic for the Virgil sanity check in this one and @the-original-sineater for having to keep this whole concept quiet for so long and providing feedback.
I’ve put this one on Ao3 directly again because it’s another 3 almost 4K words at once.
Gonna go hide now, so I hope you like
*****
Chapter 7
Virgil considered himself a rather level-headed guy in most cases, but that was only because he settled himself in his projects. Honestly, anyone would seem level-headed in comparison to Scott. But working had always helped him clear his mind, and he appreciated having a similar mind to talk to during his endeavors. At home his never-ending project was Thunderbird Two with her constant upgrades because she deserved the best. Meanwhile, Brains’ pragmatic focus was a blessing for re-grounding himself when he needed it. Here, Everett wasn’t necessarily an objective bystander, but he promised Virgil he could compartmentalize his loyalty to Gordon if it meant that Virgil could get his feelings off his chest. The radio had taken most of them, the tractor the last quarter (even Scott  would say he was fine to work on the heavy machinery, and it had really needed its steering upgraded), leaving Everett to provide an ear for the last 2% of his frustration while they worked on the final preparations for the party.
Regardless of the tension between them, Virgil would never risk the success of the event when it obviously mattered so much to Gordon and the rest of the people who’d offered him their friendship and hospitality. He was determined to get the stereo working for them and for his own satisfaction, so though he had a plan B, it was not an option. He had his heart set on getting the rustic antique functioning.
How far he’d come.
 And so much had changed.
He had not known what to make of Scott’s suggestion that he visit Gordon of all people to heal from his injuries. At first, he’d been resistant, happily blissful in his ignorance of the comings and goings in the other man’s life. His brother’s idea was insane and laughable at best. As far as he was concerned, they had the finest of care facilities on Tracy Island and on the mainland if needed, and what could Gordon possibly do for him anyway? And what did Scott know of Gordon? Virgil hadn’t wanted the glimpse beyond the curtain.
“You’ll understand.”
 “No way.”
“It’s already arranged.”
 “It’s not happening.”
But it had, and he hadn’t been happy. It took an ultimatum and wrangling by all three of his siblings to just - give it a try. Before he could think about it, the next time on terra firma was stepping onto land he’d never seen, of an estate his father’s son had apparently built in the wake of the quarrel that destroyed them. If you could call it that. It was more that Gordon had ravaged the heart of something that couldn’t be fixed or replaced, then left, like a coward, and never came back. The Gordon he once knew, even the one after the hydrofoil accident, could never be so heartless.
But the estate was magnificent.

Doubling Down
I have long argued that, in spite of our increasingly polarized society, the answer to many issues lies somewhere in the middle. It’s not necessarily so much about compromise as it is just that truth is seldom as extreme as some would claim. Between the binary black and white is an ocean of gray, and that’s where we need to know how to tread water.
In a class like Digital Marketing, the battle plays out between e-commerce and BAM stores, as if it were a winner-take-all affair. As much as Amazon upset the apple cart, and forced everyone else to come back or go away, the future of American retail is still somewhere in the middle. And, it can be argued, still leaning toward BAM.
Evidence of the faith in BAM is Walmart’s announcement to either add or convert 150 supercenters to its lineup in the next five years. It currently has 4600 Walmart stores and 600 Sam’s Clubs, and although the company is mum about how many of the 150 will simply be expansions of existing smaller stores, the thinking is that the emphasis will be on new builds.
Tumblr media
That’s a bold move at a time when it can easily be argued we are over-stored across the country, and that Amazon continues to increase its presence in the online world. Never mind Amazon, as well as Shein, the upstart Chinese company practically giving away clothes, as well as Walmart’s own push—and it is a big one, finally—into the online arena.
There’s still gold to be mined along our city thoroughfares.
It is interesting to note Walmart’s ubiquity, something we already kind of knew. But when you consider that 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart, that fact appears in bold-faced italic. Ten miles. That’s not much for a car-centric society. I am 6.5 miles door to door from Walmart, but have the convenience of it being less than two miles from the office, so it is super easy for me to veer off-course just a tad to pick up my things on the way home.
Walmart is not only the biggest retailer in the US with about $500 billion in annual sales, but also the biggest in the world, with $600 billion. It is the largest private employer in the US, with 1.6 million employees. If those employees all lived in the same city, it would be the sixth-largest city in the US, between Phoenix and Philadelphia.
In spite of inflation and customers pulling back on spending, Walmart has thrived the last few years. In the last year it grew 16%, prompting the company to announce a 3-for-1 stock split in recent days so its employees could more easily afford buying stock.
All of this speaks to a company that is bullish on terra firma stores, and rightfully so, because it has figured out how to use each of those 4600 and growing stores as distribution hubs for delivery of items purchased online. Smart thinking there, and something that Amazon cannot begin to approximate, since it only has about 355 large fulfillment centers scattered across the nation. Add in drones, and while Jeff Bezos may have been the one to imagine such a thing, Walmart is set to crush this delivery mode too.
Amid this growth are plans to renovate many stores to an emerging, more modern concept. This is critically important, because Walmart stores have a tendency to start looking long in the tooth after a while. Target has been engaged in remodel and new format efforts as well, and their super-sleek new store on Orlando’s south side left my jaw dropping over how compelling it was. Mind you, I am a dull academic, so there’s that, but Walmart needs a similar sleekness, or day I say it, sexiness.
I count myself fortunate because my local Walmart is simply outstanding, testament to good store management. It is clean, cheery, and bright. I can’t say that about many other Walmarts. And, the clientele here in Canyon is decidedly more upscale than those at other Walmarts, thanks in large part to being in a university community. I have seen both the President and EVP there before, along with many colleagues.
If Walmart can pull off what it has done here locally, it’s going to be dominating the retail scene for decades to come. The fact they are doubling down on BAM tells me they know which side their bread is buttered on. And that stock split is pretty inviting too.

... all'Inter...

Sample Chapter - 3rd Sean Tanner spy adventure novelette by Antony R James.
I've just started my third Sean Tanner spy novelette - the second one will be finished very soon. Once all three are available for sale, I will write a textbook on making your own spy novelette - the guide will analyse all three of my books and their construction, leading to the book series. It will be a behind-the-scenes look at the spy universe with an insight into how you can create your own novelette - which can be one of the stepping stones to writing a full-blown novel. Anyway, here is the first chapter of my as-yet-unnamed third spy novelette:
Chapter 1
The Jade Snake.
Sean Tanner climbed the ladder to reach the deck of the oil tanker heading for port. It had been a long journey, and he’d got to know all the crew as if they’d been friends his whole life; Sean would miss them once he stepped onto his home ground, but in his line of work, having friends was not really a good idea, it was far better to become friends with colleagues - fellow spies, as he would have hated to put a personal friend in danger because of his association.
Once on terra firma, he said his goodbyes and heaved his bag over his shoulder. It would be a long journey back to London from his set-down point, but he wasn’t concerned; he had plenty of time before his next mission - unless something came up in the meantime. Tanner could call for HQ2 to send the jet, but he didn’t see the point; with only one aircraft left, he’d leave that safely where it was - the other was scattered in pieces in Antarctica.
This rural part of the South West coastline was stunning and made all the more so by the early morning light. Having been cooped up on the tanker made him appreciate it even more.
Tanner put his hands in his jacket pocket and felt for the carved jade keep-sake he was given by his female friend Mae-Wan Lei. The small English customs office looked it over and waved him through, deciding it was a tourist souvenir and of little value. He had paid all the fees required when leaving Japan and satisfied himself that all export and import duties had been taken care of and everything was in order. He pulled his hand out of his pocket and examined the object. The carving was second to none, perhaps the finest craftsmanship he’d seen. It was museum quality.
His friendship with Mae-Wan had blossomed in Japan whilst he was enjoying a well-earned rest. Events in London - when he and Volgier had returned from Antarctica, drained him of all energy. There was no fight left in him. Sarah Serking ordered both Tanner and Volgier to take leave and recuperate. She didn’t want half-spent men taking on any new missions, and besides, she said they both deserved it as they had excelled themselves, for which she was grateful.
Tanner was enjoying the fresh smell of the sea breeze across the cliff-top when a slight high-pitched whine caught his attention; from its hidden location, just below the cliff face, a strange craft rose. Tanner’s muscles responded, preparing him for action. He saw two machine guns bolted onto each side of the flying machine, and he needed no further indication that it meant him harm. Bullets whizzed past his head; it was aiming to kill.
Tanner dropped his bag and ran, diving and rolling every time the machine neared. He could see the road below, becoming closer with each roll. Tanner landed, with a thump, onto the black tarmac. In the distance, from around a blind bend, Tanner could hear the roar of a muscle car – a rarity, but maybe a glimmer of hope; he stood up and flagged it down. A young woman wearing sunglasses and a relaxed look reached over and opened the passenger-side door. ‘Get in,’ she ordered.
Tanner did not hesitate; he rounded the car and dived into the seat just as a bullet from the hi-tech drone grazed his leg. He looked down at the wound as she put her foot firmly on the accelerator. Tanner was pinned to his seat by the acceleration of the powerful car. The gunshot wound was superficial. The young woman plucked a headscarf from her door well and threw it to Tanner.
‘I’m Tamzine Dubois – Sarah Serking sent me. You have something of great value on you – they’ll stop at nothing to get it.’‘Sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ Tanner replied, perplexed.
‘The Jade Snake, you smuggled it into the country. The real Jade Snake – the woman, is a collector of rare artefacts – you were duped into bringing it to her!’   Tanner kicked himself - Mae-Wan! How could he have been so careless, so gullible?
‘Hold on.’ Tamzine pressed a red button on the car dashboard, and a bank of small jet engines behind them burst into life. The car raced up to two hundred and fifty miles per hour.
The woman took her hands off the steering wheel and sat back, leaving the vehicle to navigate the winding coastal road.
The woman shook hands with Tanner. ‘Nice to meet you,’ she said.
‘Likewise,’ Tanner said, letting out an exasperated sigh.

[tv review] discovery 3x09 & 3x10 "terra firma" (2020)
3x09 “terra firma, part 1”
this is mostly setup for part 2, but it’s fantastic setup. saru and the others seeing georgiou off was surprisingly affecting, especially the unexpected respect georgiou and saru exchanged. we finally get to see captain killy and mirror burnham. the former is just absolutely joyful to watch, honestly? but as much as the episode allows us to enjoy some of the more indulgent aspects of the mirror universe, it also lets us feel their horror, and georgiou’s near-inability to conceal her discomfort really shows how far she’s come.
again, the real payoff is coming in part 2, but this is a great part 1, and in a great two-parter you really do hope that most of the fireworks happen in part 2. that’s kind of how it’s supposed to work! a-rank
3x10 “terra firma, part 2”
the ending of this episode left me a sobbing wreck for a second time, so, yeah. like, i was ugly crying and couldn’t stop until well after the episode was over. it just came in waves and there was nothing i could do about it.
mirror georgiou really gets to shine over the course of these two episodes, which are designed to show us how incredibly far she’s come thanks to her time aboard the discovery, and with prime michael. her interactions with mirror saru are incredible. it’s heartbreaking seeing her attempts to sway mirror michael to her side fail, but it’s wonderful seeing the attempt. it’s wonderful seeing her try to make things better. it’s the most like prime georgiou she’s ever been.
her asking the guardian if michael can come with her is gutting. their goodbye absolutely destroys me. this is just incredible television. and it’s worthy of the relationship between these two incredible women. it acknowledges what they are to each other, out loud, and it makes me feel all the feelings.
it’s still gutting that michael won’t ever have either version of her mommy domme in her life again, but it is probably the best goodbye star trek has ever done. the sweetest sorrow, if you will. s-rank
