How I brought a river, and my city, back to life

Architect Aziza Chaouni focuses on projects that integrate architecture and landscape, and that ultimately give back to their communities. For years, she worked to revive the Fez River, which runs through her hometown of Fez, Morocco.

In this 2014 TED Talk : TED Fellow Aziza Chaouni recounts her effort to restore this river to its former glory, and to transform her city in the process. The Fez River winds through the medina of Fez, Morocco—a mazelike medieval city that's a World Heritage site. Once considered the "soul" of this celebrated city, the river succumbed to sewage and pollution, and in the 1950s was covered over bit by bit until nothing remained.

Dia adalah Dr. Burçin Mutlu-Pakdil, ahli astrofisika asal Universitas Arizona, AS. Burçin tumbuh besar di Turki dan sejak kecil suka menatap bintang. Di keluarganya, dia adalah satu-satunya yang bisa kuliah di universitas. Burçin mengambil jurusan Fisika di Universitas Binkert di Ankara, Turki. Dan melanjutkan kuliah masternya di Texas Tech University, AS. Burçin berhasil meraih gelar Ph.D di bidang Astrofisika di Universitas Minnesota, Twin Cities. . Saat penelitian doktoral, Burçin dan timnya berhasil menemukan galaksi PGC 1000714. Galaksi yang kemudian dinamai dengan namanya tsb merupakan jenis galaksi yang sangat langka. Ada lebih dari 1 trilyun galaksi di luar angkasa dan mayoritas berbentuk spiral, termasuk di antaranya Galaksi Bima Sakti [Milky Way] di mana Bumi kita berada. . Pada awalnya dia mengira itu adalah galaksi tipe Hoag yang berbentuk cincin. Namun ternyata jenis galaksi yang ia temukan berbeda. "Antara cincin biru terluar dengan intinya yang berwarna merah, kami temukan sebaran cincin dalam berwarna merah yang mengelilingi bagian tengah [galaksi]. Kami menyaksikan sebuah galaksi yang belum pernah disaksikan [ditemukan] sebelumnya." . Atas kesuksesannya di bidang Astrofisika, Burçin terpilih untuk berbicara di acara TED Fellows 2018. Hanya 20 orang yang dianggap sebagai pembuat perubahan di dunia yang diundang dalam acara tsb. . Kepada wartawan National Geographic dia mengatakan, "Kau mungkin tidak mendapatkan hasil yang kau inginkan di percobaan yang pertama.
