just realized. the two king salmonids we’ve seen so far have both been based somewhat around a special. cohozuna is splashdown spam and horrorboros is booyah bomb spam. now, normal bosses are often based around a special, and we haven’t really seen any repeats (i guess you could technically call slammin’ lid splashdown? but it’s more big bubbler. and steelhead is definitely not booyah bomb level intense.) this leads me to the conclusion: kraken salmonid king maybe??? or maybe nintendo just decides they really hate us and give us the flyfish 2: electric boogaloo, no idea how you’d make that worse but it would suck. maybe a bit like frye’s eels? there’s also more specials to consider, even repeats that i’m just gonna list off quick:
-super chump
-trizooka
-tristrike
-crab tank, OH FUCK CRAB TANK
-ink vac
-reefslider
-killer wail 5.1
-ultra stamp
-ink storm
-zipcaster
-wave breaker
-ink jet
-big bubbler
-tacticooler (anyone up for some soda-crazed glowflies salmonids? any takers?)
now obviously some of these have a lot more potential than others in king salmonid usage and some might just make it in as normal bosses but honestly seeing the trend (of all of two data points so far lol) in king salmonids i’m both very excited for what they come up with next and very afraid of future king salmonids. what do y’all think?

heckkk yes we beat Cohozuna and actually got a gold scale!! This is the 3rd gold scale I’ve ever gotten and I think the 4th time I’ve ever beaten Cohozuna. I just lucked into a really great group and we worked together so smoothly and had a lot of fun. I think I was also just in a really good groove and was making a lot fewer of the silly disoriented mistakes that I often do. It felt good.
This probably sounds silly/obvious but it’s really interesting to me how much of my ability to play this game is mental. Like, I’ve mostly played slow-paced, puzzle, and turn-based games that don’t really take a lot of twitchy-technical skill most of my life and at no point while playing those games did I really notice a connection between doing well at those games and like, my mental state. But it’s absolutely a thing with this game, and I imagine similar action games, where sometimes I’m just doing really well or not so well for seemingly ‘no reason’ but the reason is something nebulously related to my mental state. I can’t always pinpoint what it is. Sometimes it’s obvious, like when I am over-excited or under pressure or haven’t eaten (lol). Sometimes if I suddenly realize that I’m doing well, I will then immediately start doing poorly, and if I realize I am doing poorly I tend to ...continue to do poorly. I almost have to withhold my processing of my own feelings about my performance until after I’m done playing, like any kind of self-awareness jolts me out of the state that I do the best in and it can take some time to get back into it. It’s just really interesting and kind of an exercise in presence and...emotional-self-control, almost.
I am just... having so many experiences I never expected to get out of a video game, hah.
