just realized. the two king salmonids we’ve seen so far have both been based somewhat around a special. cohozuna is splashdown spam and horrorboros is booyah bomb spam. now, normal bosses are often based around a special, and we haven’t really seen any repeats (i guess you could technically call slammin’ lid splashdown? but it’s more big bubbler. and steelhead is definitely not booyah bomb level intense.) this leads me to the conclusion: kraken salmonid king maybe??? or maybe nintendo just decides they really hate us and give us the flyfish 2: electric boogaloo, no idea how you’d make that worse but it would suck. maybe a bit like frye’s eels? there’s also more specials to consider, even repeats that i’m just gonna list off quick:

-trizooka
-tristrike
-crab tank, OH FUCK CRAB TANK
-ink vac
-reefslider
-killer wail 5.1
-ultra stamp
-ink storm
-zipcaster
-wave breaker
-ink jet
-big bubbler

now obviously some of these have a lot more potential than others in king salmonid usage and some might just make it in as normal bosses but honestly seeing the trend (of all of two data points so far lol) in king salmonids i’m both very excited for what they come up with next and very afraid of future king salmonids. what do y’all think?

HI HELLO! Welcome to my completely unnecessarily detailed analysis on how I think Inkfish languages could work! + with art! yay! This is all pretty rough and not fully fleshed out (I don't have the time or patience for that lmao). THIS IS A LONG POST.
Okay, so there's dozens of languages spoken by cephalopods in the Mollusc Era but the main two I'll talk about are Inkling (or Inklish) and Octarian, spoken mostly by Inklings and Octolings respectively.
In cephalopods, speech is formed using the syrinx and larynx, two fancy vocal organs that most other species don't have together. The larynx makes sounds using the radula (tongue) and vocal folds in the throat, it's clear and pretty easy to understand as the sound itself resembles human speech, albeit warbled. The syrinx makes noise by vibrating air at the base of the trachea, it's often trickier to follow as it can sound more like droning background noise than words sometimes.
An inkfish can use both of them at once, resulting in an EXTREMELY complicated language system where words can be made up of multiple layered syllables, and several words and sentences can even be said at the same time.
As you can probably imagine, all of this is LITERAL HELL to learn for species who don’t have both a syrinx and a larynx (so basically anyone who isn't a cephalopod). But fear not! There are many simple and more inclusive alternatives, dialects and other cool stuff like sign language and instant TTS technology for people who physically can't pronounce Inkling/Octarian or even vocalise at all (eg. jellyfish).
Both main Inkfish languages can be broken down into laryngeal words (made with the larynx), syringeal/drone words (made with the syrinx) or a combination of both, called dual-toned/layered words.
Keep in mind that both word-types can be spoken at the same time. Layering can be used to add additional connotations to a word, or to even make a new one entirely. For example, the laryngeal noun ‘bird’ combined with the syringeal noun ‘metal’ spoken together will create the layered Inkling word ‘aeroplane’, like a compound word in English.
Dual-toned stuff is more common in Inkling than in Octarian, as the language is older and has more loanwords. Inklish's dependence on the larynx gives it a higher-pitched, clearer sound whereas Octarian's more monotone syrinx-based structure results in a deep, almost guttural sound.
Both cephalopod languages are heavy on tone and pronunciation, resulting in a plenty of accent indicators in written scripts. I used the in-game fonts for the art but if I were to rework it, each letter would probably be more complicated than traditional Mandarin on steroids. So hell on earth, basically.
On a side note, all of these language features open possibilities for some very cool poetry and literature. An inkfish author could write a poem with two lines of thought occurring at once, or a book with vivid emotional undertones written inside the prose. Pretty cool.

Analysing the new Splatoon 3 Wave 2 DLC - Side Order
I am about 90% sure this is supposed to be Agent 8!
As such, what I talk about next will be based entirely around this assumption - if this is wrong, then this analysis is void, but it's just for fun anyway so hskshj
I personally believe this wave of the DLC will be tackling the loose ends in regards to Octo Expansion, and more specifically: 8's amnesia prior to starting it. Having no memory of who they are or where they came from, they fight their way through the metro, defeating Tartar along the way and reaching their freedom on the Surface.
But then...
Who are they still?
Besides the memcakes, this issue is never quite resolved. As such- I believe the DLC will focus on that! With Agent 8 rediscovering who they used to be, and who they are now. Figuring out their identity and sense of self so they can finally know who they are. And based on what we saw in the trailer, I have several ways to back up this idea.
First up: the hub. A coral-ridden, colour-bleached version of our beloved Inkopolis Square. There is a strong coral themeing throughout the entire DLC trailer, and I think the reason why might be relevant to 8.
Coral bleaches when exposed to stressors in its environment, such as light, temperature and nutrients. So perhaps this is a metaphor for all the stressors on Agent 8's psyche. Their environment has changed dramatically, from Underground to the surface world of Inkopolis, so it wouldn't even surprise me if such changes still left them quite out of it.
It could also be a metaphor for how Inkopolis Square still isn't home for them. Considering the very intentional hotel-esque interior of the tower, a hotel being a place travellers go to stay in, this could very well encourage the idea that this still isn't home for 8. Just a glorified trip, regardless of whether or not they even can go 'home'. If they even remember home. The fanciness of it could also be a nod to how out of place they feel, as though they were in a place far out of their league. Like a common man in a palace, it feels...out of place.
Then? You have this image of multiple octolings. Multiple '8s', that perhaps could imply that they are still struggling to find their identity in a sea of so many like them. So many soldiers like them, so many test subjects like them...
They were always one of thousands, nothing more than a number in a crowd, so they never had any individuality. They never felt they were unique. So why is them who got to find their freedom? Why were they special?
And now we make it to the key in all this:
Pearl and Marina.
Pearl and Marina were a key component in helping 8 escape the Deepsea Metro. So if anyone would be here for them in such a struggle: it's them. The idea of it being a recollection of 8's memories could also explain Marina's glitched out appearance here.
It's just a memory. Were her tentacles blue, or green? Was this her outfit? Or was it something else? Maybe 8 even has some lasting memory issues after everything...hence how even newer memories seem to escape them.
Pearl seems to meet them in the blanked out square, so they're likely a key part in all of this. Just a hunch.
Overall though, I'm really really excited!! This DLC looks like it's shaping up to be something amazing, and I hope my silly ramblings at least interest some of you <:)

I mean to be fair, it's the only one with pointed ears (headset), and the outlines of the "standard" Agent 4 hairstyle. There is honestly very little else it could be beyond a new character outright.
...So it probably is a new character, then. Because Nintendo.

OKAY REALLY COOL SPLAT3 FINALFEST LORE IDEA
alrihgtt so you know how frye is always losing and stuff in splatfest, big man/shiver is always winning, maybe in the finalfest frye might actually win because they’re gonna do a little STEP UP with the dialogue and make frye actually angry
becuase y’know what would be a good story problem for splatoon 4 or any other dlc? the 3 poisons. yeah. greed, anger and ignorance, which corresponds to deep cut’s anarchy poisons solo songs.
and FRYE JUST HAPPENS TO GET ANGER as a poison! (and as a character trait I guess shes very passionate)
YOU SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING OK what if!! the results are already decided with frye losing once more, and her getting angry and leaving deep cut and becoming a major antagonist in the next game (not the main villain or anything idk? maybe? perhaps?)
and because splat 2 finalfest had the art of each character in the teams, the villains (octavio, tartar and grizz) would be PERFECTLY MATCHED UP TO A TEAM!! — grizz is greed, tartar is anger and octavio is ignorance
AND WHOEVER WAS THE WINNER JOINS WITH FRYE AND THEY MAKE THE NEXT STORY ARC therefore both the winning and losing team are incorporated and its not just like oh whoever loses becomes evil and brainwashed

Some Thoughts on Fresh Season
Alright so Fresh Season 2023 was the only season where we got new gear that wasn't from the catalogue/a event. Fresh Season was when we where given access to Inkopolis Square and the Squid Sister's performance during splatfest.
So with this pretext it's plausible that we might get more clothes this upcoming seaso, how ever what I'm hoping for is....
More Hairstyles!
The Splatoon 3 art book shows off a metric heck ton of unused hairstyles that look amazing!
So since this update might end up being a good one due to Side Orders release I'm hoping they'll give us more hairstyles from the art book!
And also maybe even some of those fresh outfits too!
But I am always prepared to be disappointed..

babe wake up new squid lore just dropped
This is just me trying my damndest to rationalise inkling development, mainly how all the guts move around in the body. The internal anatomy is pretty rough, but it gets my point across.
All Inkfish hatch with only four limbs, but they eventually grow more as they get older. This totals to 8 in octolings and 10 in inklings.
the digestive and respiratory tracts are also completely separate from each other up until around age 2-3, where the trachea and esophagus fuse together and inkfish then gains the ability to speak.
Very young paralarvae are fed bits of meat as it's all they can really digest as their digestive tracts are rather short. However as the torso develops, the intestines also elongate which makes it a lot easier for the little squid to digest tougher things (like cellulose/plants and other junk). It opens up a lot more dietary options too.
They will have no problem chewing anything though, as they have very powerful and sharp beaks right from birth. And kids LOVE to chew on things, so hide your computer charger and keys. Even worse when you've got a squid with sucker claws, it's like having a boneless cat with a hyperactivity disorder and a can opener for a mouth. Nightmares.

ok can we talk real quick about these "marina cans" that were onscreen for mere seconds in the trailer? they look almost like canned specials (maybe they're how eight can use inkstrikes as seen in the montage) or some sort of paint can
the design is really cute and also really interesting! are these just a marina-like way of supplying the player with boosts, even though we didn't get to see her onscreen, or are they some sort of condensed essence that alludes to her presence in the spire?

I gave all the eye colors in splatoon 3 genotypes.
I am not a geneticist, just someone who thinks heredity and genetics are fascinating. Below the cut are pictures of all eyes colors + their genotypes + the genotypes written out for those that need it!

Before we dive in, a few quick things that will make this easier to understand!
* indicates a mutation! M-D means “mutation dominant”, meaning it occurs when either a homozygous dominant + heterozygous dominant, and it means that the mutation would be dominant over homozygous recessive pairs but not hetero itself or homozygous dominant pairs.
Example: Xx* is not more dominant than Xx or XX. Xx* & Xx have the same level of dominance!
M-R means “mutation recessive”, meaning the mutation occurs on a homozygous recessive pair. The M-R is not more dominant/recessive than the non-mutated gene.
Example: xx* is not more dominant than xx. They have the same level of dominance.
And lastly, mutations only “sit” or are carried on the second allele.

I tried my hardest to give every gene set an homozygous dominant, heterozygous, and homozygous recessive but it didn’t work out 100% perfect.
