Sorting out my feelings about the TDP news from SDCC...
Okay, I’ve slept on it and given it some time to sink in. Here’s my attempt at a post about my feelings in regards to TDP S4. Just a warning ... it’s gonna be a novel. And perhaps a little critical. Probably. Bear with me, because this is really rough.
(And yes, I have accidentally seen some of the spoilers of the first episode from Cartoon Universe’s Twitter, but I’m not sure whether I want to know it all before November. You know? So please don’t spoil in the replies, OK?)
So I’ll be the first to admit that I was conflicted with how TTM ended at first. Like, it was a real downer for me as a hardcore Rayllum shipper. (My husband and I had started watching TDP in the summer of 2020. I was going through really bad anxiety at the time because of the pandemic and moving states, so Rayllum had really become my comfort ship.)
Post TTM I was a little upset, and perhaps a bit bitter about how Rayla handled things. (Although it did kinda make sense based on her state of mind at the end of the comic.) But I tried to cheer myself up through theory crafting what S4 could look like based on the limited information we had. I knew there’d be a time skip. I figured this would probably be a few months to a year. And I figured we’d start of the new season with Callum searching for Rayla. I really couldn’t see him just moping around the castle the whole time. Nah, this guy jumped off a CLIFF for her. No way in hell he’d just let her go, right?
So the other day when we got the Inheritance short story, I was a bit surprised to see that not only had Callum gone back to the castle post TTM, but he had been there for months, it seemed. Like I really thought he’d be out there searching for her, or maybe the story would mention that he tried searching for her for weeks and returned defeated, unable to find her. But that wasn’t mentioned - so I can only assume that didn’t happen. And I wasn’t sure how I felt about that.
Then comes the news that it’s apparently been two years. Not only since Rayla left. Apparently Viren’s been dead this whole time?
I talked about this with my husband as soon as the news came in, and we were kind of on the same page about how conflicted we were. Here’s a few reasons why this two year time skip is concerning, in no particular order:
1. So much has probably happened in the universe of TDP within these two years, especially with Zym returned to the Dragon Queen. There’s so much we’ll need to be caught up on, and we already don’t really know too much about how this world works. So the writers are really going to need to put in the work to explain / show this all. And do extra work on the top of that to get the audience caught up. I feel like it’s kind of a shame that we don’t get to see all those changes / developments as they happen.
2. Rayla and Callum have been separated for two years. Let that sink in. If you were annoyed at Rayla’s decision in TTM and really didn’t like the separation, this time skip is just going to make that worse. Like, for me personally, I’m not a big fan of angst in relationships. Mainly because I’ve seen stuff like this done so poorly in shows in the past. You’ll have characters in a healthy relationship who talk things through and work out their conflicts in a healthy way, only to upend this by bringing in some contrived conflict  - secrets that the characters hide from each other, a prolonged separation, a dumb misunderstanding that no one bothers to correct, etc. This is what really bothered me about Captain Swan in the sixth season of Once Upon a Time. What made that one especially aggravating is that we the fans knew that there was going to be a Captain Swan wedding episode in that season. We knew these two were going to reunite, work through their conflict, and get married. So why were the writers dragging this out? Going back to TDP, this two year time skip wherein Rayla and Callum have been separated makes me nervous for similar reasons. We know they’re going to have to reunite at some point. And yes, they’ll get back together. So why are we doing this? And how long is it going to take? Is there a good story reason that this needs to happen? Or is it just pointless angst and drama from characters that, up until this point, were in a pretty healthy relationship and had made great strides in being honest with each other and letting each other in? I really hope we’re going somewhere good with this, but I just can’t shake this nervous feeling.
3. Soooo, Viren’s been dead for two years? Really? That raises so many more questions. I assume Claudia would have had to cast some sort of preservation spell on his body. We haven’t established that magic in-universe, but it could be explained away easily enough. What bothers me though is the implications that this has on the other characters. What was Bug-avos doing this whole time? Was Claudia really attempting to bring her father back from the dead for two whole years? Has she ran into Rayla? Speaking of, if Viren was dead, then why the hell was he in that whole realm between life and death? And doesn’t that upend Rayla’s whole reason for leaving? Like, we knew that Rayla was right and Viren was alive when we read TTM. So we understand why it’s important that he’s found. But now we find out that Viren actually wasn’t alive until now, two years after TTM. So like, Rayla was wrong, and she was just being paranoid? As my husband pointed out, that just makes the fact that she left Callum so much worse. Because it was literally for nothing.
4. Viren being dead for two years also gives me major, “Ha! Didn’t see that twist coming, did ya?” vibes. And after Once Upon a Time, I kinda hate these kinds of twists. For contrast, The Owl House has “twists”, but handles them in such a way that there is a lot of foreshadowing and, if you’re paying attention, you’re able to figure it out WAY before the characters do. So the tension and suspense comes not from the twist itself, but the audience’s anticipation in having the characters discover the twist and react to it. I personally love that. I don’t like twists just for the sake of surprising the audience - especially when they make little logical sense. I realllllly hope that’s not what TDP is doing. Maybe it was really thought out and I’m just being paranoid.
5. So like, what has Rayla been doing this whole time? I said in my S4 predictions that I doubted she’d find Claudia and Viren because she literally had no leads and nothing to go on besides her vision in TTM.  So that seems to be true - considering Viren hasn’t even been alive this whole time. So what in the world has Rayla been doing? She has no family to go back to. Are we supposed to believe she’s just been aimlessly wandering Xadia this whole time? We’ll probably have to get some sort of episode that brings us up to speed on what she’s been doing this whole time. But I honestly can’t even being to fathom it because she literally has nothing to go on and no one to travel with. (Unless she got captured by someone not long into her journey and they’re waiting to reveal that. I’d honestly be ok with that development, because it would make her more sympathetic. It’s not purely a matter of her abandoning Callum for two years. She wouldn’t have been able to return to him if she wanted to.)
6. This time skip also has an unintended consequence of making us miss out on some character / relationship development - which IMO, is what the show does best. (Yes, the world and plot is interesting, but I’m here for the characters above everything else.) So we’re going to miss out on seeing Amaya and Janai’s relationship grow. Apparently they’re an established couple now. So much for fun development of an interesting LGBTQ ship. Don’t get me wrong - I’m glad we have them and that they’re together now. But I would’ve liked to see it happen in real time on the show, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way. There’s probably other characters who’ll get off-screen development as well. And yes, that’s all well and good, but like ... I wanted to see it happen, y’know?
7.  Lastly, with a two year time skip, there’s going to be a lot that needs to be explained. Which means the first few episodes are probably going to be very exposition heavy. I’m just hoping the writing doesn’t feel too clunky here. Like, “As you know, Callum, you’ve been high mage for two years and it’s been two years since Rayla’s been missing...” You know. That kind of writing.
Okay, so now that I’ve gotten that out of the way - here’s some more positive thoughts to balance it out.
1. The animation looks awesome. Gone is the choppy frame rate of season one. Loving the micro-expressions and little details on the characters and their faces. Bravo Wonderstorm!
2. Callum’s design! Not sure about the hair. But I love the outfit. And he’s still the same loveable dork he was. <3
3. A two year time skip does give the potential for a truly romantic reunion between Rayla and Callum. That’s what I’m most hoping for. I want them to be like, “Wow, you look older!” Maybe she can tease him for his new haircut. Please Wonderstorm - do NOT drag out their separation or make their reunion terribly angsty. It’s been TWO years. We need this. <3
4. I’m excited to see everyone else’s updated designs as well. Soren, Ezran, Zym. I can’t WAIT to see what they look like.
That’s it for now. But I’m sure this won’t be the last post from me. Now I’m going to try to figure out if I want to read the spoilers or not. (And don’t get me started on how I feel about them showing that episode at SDCC. I was annoyed about the TTM leak, so you can probably guess how I feel about this.)
Anyway, I really want to hear from you guys. Do you agree with any of my misgivings? Want to reassure me? Think I’m dead wrong?

Okay, so I heard somewhere that when Runaan fights Rayla right before the assassination, that he wasn’t actually trying to kill her. He was just trying to disarm her and get her away from the fight. (IDK if this is canon, but let’s assume it is). And at the end of their fight, when Runaan starts to turn away to go assassinate King Harrow, Rayla shouts, “No, wait!” And when he’s leaping on the rooftops, she gets this facial expression and stares after him seemingly nervously for a bit. Hence my headcanon. Runaan is fighting her to get her away from the incredibly dangerous mission, and Rayla is doing the exact same thing. She cares deeply about Runaan and Ethari, and she knows that if Runaan fights in that battle both of them are going to get hurt. So, what does she do? She stalls him.
Also, side note, I can totally see Rayla and/or Runaan thinking once things slowed down, I don’t want to have to explain this to Ethari. I wonder who will. I mean they have to give him all the details of the mission eventually. I think we’re looking at a much more intense version of the talking-to in BH.

wait wait wait there's something i just realized about the new trailer. now, this may be common knowledge already, but i hadn't really thought about it like this before and wanted to share my thoughts!
so, there's a scene in the trailer where aaravos is facing the camera and takes off his hood, much like he does when he first faces viren through the mirror. i didn't really think much of it until i saw this post by @legend-of-the-fandoms and suddenly it struck me! i have been wanting and expecting an interaction between callum and aaravos for a while now, and i wouldn't be surprised if aaravos tried to establish contact with callum sometime in season 4. but this post really made me think. is rayla going missing at the same time as callum is left alone with the mirror such a coincidence?
if aaravos wanted to manipulate callum in any way, rayla is both the problem and the solution. she is a problem because she is an elf and a possible voice of reason. as an elf, it's likely that she might know something about aaravos or how/why he was imprisoned. even if she doesn't, aaravos has reason to suspect she does, as he was trapped in the mirror for a long time and most likely doesn't know how much is known about him to the general public. also, rayla is a sharp-witted and strong warrior, as aaravos witnessed when she threw viren off the edge of the mountain in the end of season 3. it is much easier to judge the situation objectively from the outside, and she is the closest person to callum besides ezran, who is probably busy being a king, in addition to being a child. it would be logical to remove her from the equation, better safe than sorry, after all. by being so close and dear to callum, she also becomes a tool. how easy would it be to tempt him with enough power to find her and bring her back if she went missing?
now, am i saying aaravos fully planned her disappearance? no. but when she went to look for viren, do i think he could have taken that opportunity to remove a potential threat to his plans from the playing field? yeah, i do think that! how do i think he'd do that? to be honest, i'm not entirely sure. realistically, with viren barely hanging on to life, aaravos could definitely use claudia. she is both physically close to viren and deeply cares for him, as well as being skilled in dark magic, making her a very good, if not perfect, candidate for the position.
so, where exactly is rayla now and what has happened to her? i don't know. but i do strongly suspect aaravos may have had a hand in her disappearance. it just benefits him just a bit too much to be a complete coincidence.
(big ty to @chasvchalilah for updating me abt what's going on in the comic <3)

Some Dragon Prince thoughts/predictions. Or maybe something I would love to see. Just thoughts as I rewatch.
In S2E1 when Lujanne talks to Callum about the Moon Arcanum, he really struggles to understand it and outright says he doesn’t get it.
What if in his journey to become a mage, he is unable to form a connection to the Moon Arcanum? Like he tries to start learning all the Arcanums. And the moon makes sense to tackle next. He knows Moonshadow elves who can help him. But he just can’t get it.
Why? And why would I find this compelling? After the events of TTM, losing Rayla, a Moonshadow elf, he has a hard time accepting her reasoning. Has a hard time connecting to the moon because his heart is severed from it. Like his subconscious is preventing him from it because of Rayla.
I just think it would be an interesting way for his conflict to manifest and I would eat up that angst.

Just some thoughts on our boy, Terry.
Tumblr media
First of all, how rad is this promo art???
Tumblr media
Season 4 gave us so much to think about, and the dynamic between Claudia, Terry, and even Viren set up an interesting web of plots. There are a few directions that the writers can take this in, and I want to make a prediction now and see if it'll come to fruition.
Tumblr media
For the record, I'm a huuuuuge fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and many of the fundamental people behind TDP also worked on ATLA. In fact, I feel like TDP 'feels' similar to Avatar, more so than Legend of Korra (not sure if this makes sense, but I've said this to a few people in the past and they've agreed with me. But that's another conversation...).
So if you're familiar with ATLA, you'll be familiar with these crazy kids here...
Tumblr media
And you'll be familiar with their dynamic...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and their betrayal of Azula.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the reason why I bring all of this up is because...
I think Terry may jump ship from the bad guys, and join the Dragang on their quest.
So here's the thing.
Obviously, Terry loves Claudia, and Claudia loves Terry. But there is a good, good person in there. We see this at the end of S4.09, where he makes a point to tell Claudia his thoughts about his treatment of Rayla.
Tumblr media
"I've seen you do a lot of awful things. Dark magic things. But I always believed in you because you had a reason. But what you just did...the way you tricked that Moonshadow Elf. It was just...cruel." (Terry, The Dragon Prince - Season 4, Ep. 9).
[by the way, screencap is from this video below, because I don't know how to do fancy things.]
youtube
Thx, Lucas Ramos!
First of all, good for Terry for being Claudia's conscience. Second, Terry clearly has a moral compass. And I think the Dragang's beliefs more closely align with his own. Claudia seems to think that elves believe humans are inferior...thanks to Aaravos' influence, of course. And the Dragang is trying to bring about peace between the elves and humans.
And what does Terry want? He wants Claudia. He loves Claudia. And I think he's going to side with the greater good in later episodes because of his love for Claudia.
This is all speculation. I could be so wrong that this post will come back to bite me in 6 - 12 months and I'll look like a fool. (Also, please don't let the next few seasons take that long to release!!!)
I'm calling it now. Terry's gonna switch sides, ya'll.
And Claudia...well. It may sway her too, or it may cause to her go truly, utterly berserk. We'll just have to wait and see.
Tumblr media
Just sayin'.....

@thrandilf made a bingo card for their fic, The Devil You Thought you Knew (go check it’s out, it’s a great TDP fic) based on their predictions for S6 and encouraged me to do so too so here I am!
These predictions are based off my fic which was mostly written post season 3 and updated for 4 & 5, so it’s not totally up to date. The fic is titled Startouched (find it HERE) and follows Half Elf Callum with his father, Aaravos as Callum finds out and they figure out how to be a family.
I don’t think all of these will actually come true, they’re just musings based off my fic’s events.
This bingo card contains some spoilers for unposted chapters of the fic

I saw this trend going around so did one too. Except for peace of mind and to start advertising it again, I did it for an AU version of Megavos (my selfship with Aaravos) a comic project titled The Fallen Star.
I interpreted the Trust, Clinginess, and Jealousy meters to be about the couple toward each other, not other people around them.
-
Templates found here.
More information on the AU below
First…
Aaravos is originally from a show called The Dragon Prince. He is one of the villains, and probably will be the final boss (how boringly predictable… :/) but I have interview evidence that he is not truly evil and is complicated. You can see that post here.
Because of this information from interviews and on the zodiac sign; Scorpio (which is relevant to Aaravos as TDP characters’ personalities are constructed with Zodiac signs involved) which claims they have a hard outer shell but when they lower it they are the most loving and loyal friend or partner you could ask for…I came to like him, because if it wasn’t for that information I would have written him off as a predictable pretty faced character that’s actually horrible and ugly inside, but fun to watch. I still have small hope that won’t be the case…but I’m not holding my breath on this one.
However…
I thought it would be fun to make an AU version of the show’s plot which I call The Fallen Star (and is a project I came up with and had been developing as of season 2 and 3, but before season 4 was even announced) but have Aaravos be the protagonist and have my self-insert be in it too as his first friend in the story. On top of that, to make it more interesting and unique, the elves in the show are dragons too and all dragons shapeshift into their ‘elf’ forms.
So the conflict isn’t dragons/elves vs humans, but only dragons vs humans. It’s also a situation of humans in the West forgetting magic exists after a while and instead moving into the industrial era with electricity and technology, while the East remains magical and medieval in style and way of life.
As the project went into development it ended up following the plot of the show, but with Aaravos and Meg in the mix it changed up quite a few things. I won’t say much more now, but I can guarantee Aaravos is a truly complicated and not-evil character, and not just because his backstory is tragic and explains why he became a villain like I fear the show will do… (Plus he isn’t even an antagonist in this AU, and I won’t be changing that whatever the show does with him.)
TL;DR: I made an AU for The Dragon Prince with Aaravos as the protagonist, my self-insert as his first friend in the story, and following the basic plot of the first three seasons of the show he’s from, but with tweaking due to making elves into dragons and having humans advance to the age of technology as well as Aaravos being the protagonist.
He is a complicated and not truly evil character here too, and the show’s progress will not change the direction I’m taking this AU.
-
Disclaimer: The profile photos where it talks about each person’s traits were traced and edited from screenshots from the show.
The rest of the art on the template (minus the aesthetic photos) was done by me, but the background of Magic Study was taken from the show Aaravos is from too.

The dragon prince season 4 rant(spoilers from like line one)
There's a lot of ppl complaining rn about aaravos only getting one scene but I think this was very well done for two reasons. One is fandoms love puzzles. Finding all the pieces, seeing what goes together and figuring out what the final picture is. But once they're done with the puzzle they move right onto the next thing to solve. They'll either not appreciate the work the crew puts in after solving the puzzle(I've done this in the past with shows like gravity falls- trust me I know) or just treat it as another show and move on to the next hyped up thing. There's also fans who's reviews/ reactions I've seen on yt and LITERALLY IN SEASON 2 they said "this guy's cool but once you know the mystery and big reveal he's kinda boring" IN SEASON 2!!!! SO YEAH NO WONDER TDP CREW ARE ONLY GIVING HIM SO FEW LINES.
Secondly the show is titled "mystery of aaravos" not "discovering aaravos" or "all about aaravos". "Mystery of aaravos". What kind of mystery reveals itself at the start of a new chapter in the show? And yeah yeah it's season 4 but season 3 wasn't "mystery of arravos" it was the dragon prince. We didn't get most of tdp clues until the end of season 3 / during the hiatus excluding maybe things like the elarion poem? Idk when that came in could've been season 1/2 as that was when we first saw the ancient book I believe right? Correct me if I'm wrong I need to rewatch the show. Also side note the show is definitely not a long show. I work full time 10-6 night shifts Mon to Fri and I still binged it all in 8 hours the Sunday after guy Fawkes night. So yeah even if aaravos only gets one scene so what? It's not like we're sitting through 40/50 min eps to get a crumb of hot elf man.
Tumblr media
Oh right yeah tdp is made by a lot of atla crew so they know what they're doing when they only keep the big bad in one major scene (which he slayed in btw) it's not just fanservice
Tumblr media
As fun as the fanservice is Aaravos' tiny scene is a great display of his power(which we've seen little regarding the extent it can go btw esp with a non consenting host) and raises many questions for us to theorise on(like is Aaravos' a monster fucker?/j... Unless). The crew knows how to stir the fandom and indeed were probably predicting this dissapointed response when they made Aaravos' scene. Yet they kept it this way bc that's how you reel in the old fans and even viewers. With puzzles and mysteries and hidden clues. It's also a good way to keep casual viewers who may miss the hidden clues on their toes. Even if most of the hints and clues fly over their heads they'll still think "why is this guy fallen?" "What does he gain from manipulating people this way?"(which is a whole debate of its own after elarion's poem).
So tldr: the breadcrumbs we get of aaravos are intentional and a lot of people don't get that

Bloodmoon Huntress vs Post TTM parallels
Okay. I haven’t seen a post about this, it needs attention, so I’m gonna give it some.
First, when she tries to get help from Ruthari and then from those guards, they write her off as just a little kid playing a “Halloween” joke. When she thought that there was even a chance that Viren might be alive, she got written off again, this time as paranoid. Both times, she was right, and she probably learned to follow her gut in these situations.
Second, anyone else think that the Moonshadow Forest During the blood moon looks a bit like the base of the Cursed Caldera? No? Just me?
Third, and this one is more subtle, but during the first parallel I mentioned, Rayla looks at the other elves running around having a good time and immediately goes, “I’ve got to get out of here.” Kind of like how things were going really great after the Battle of the Storm Spire, eh?
Personal Headcanon: I think she might’ve sensed something was wrong when The Dragon King was killed but everyone just kept telling her it was going to be fine, so she tried her best to believe it, and just when she managed to convince herself that everything was fine, her entire world fell apart. I can totally see her thinking “No way am I doing that again.”
Side note about BH, she’s mad at her parents for leaving her, very vocally, through the book. And one of the things that confuses her the most about Runaan’s job is that he could leave Ethari, knowing there was a chance he was never coming back. I know she left Callum to protect him, but GIRL! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?! Also, I think in the reunion scene/scenes, Callum will be all mad about her leaving him, and she’ll be completely silent because she’s been beating herself up about being a total hypocrite because at some point, she had to have been thinking about the last time she saw her parents and Runaan, because she thinks they’re dead, and that’s going to be impacting her train of thought these past 2 years.

decided i’d toss my own “tdp soundtrack title predictions” hat into the ring, given that i haven’t gotten to one of these since S3 aired, and damn the nostalgia
full track list here with S4 seemingly being from 1-28, and S5 from 29-62. also not going to be talking about every track as some (“rescue at the great bookery” and “threate in the forest” for ex) seem pretty self explanatory, and with that all out of the way, let’s get into it
31. I Haven’t Forgotten (3:41) — Could easily see this being an early Viren and/or Aaravos focused scene, as Aaravos holding a grudge kinda necessitates having a good ass memory - maybe even something that relates to Zubeia as well, since she’s ancient in her own way and is clearly gonna have her own role to play this season.
32. Seeking Answers (3:05) — Likely in 5x01 with the group returning to Katolis, perhaps centred on Callum and Rayla individually well, seeking answers. For Rayla, this could mean looking into the dungeons about her family and finding Runaan’s bow. We also get Rayla’s voice over (and clip) that appears to be her in Ezran’s old room in the S5 trailer asking “How do we kill a Startouch elf?” so that and/or answers about Aaravos’ prison may be what they go to Lux Aurea to, well, seek.
34. My Most Eager Student (4:58) — First Viren and Kpp’Ar conversation (which the implication he had more than one student if that’s the case?? Fascinating) perhaps, or Aaravos reflecting on Claudia, as it seems she will fully be stepping into her own as Aaravos’ protege this season
35. Keep Moving (3:01) — Terry and Claudia, since Viren won’t wake up, realizing that they can’t wait any longer and have to start moving. Maybe end of 5x01 or 5x02?
39. In Your Dreams (1:55) — Callum and/or Viren and/or Zubeia having dreams/nightmares regarding their respective fears?
40. A Familiar Warning (2:04) — Karim and Sol Regem, maybe, beginning to barter, or a warning from Kpp’Ar that Viren disregarded, cutting to the present day with Terry giving the same one to Claudia that she likewise ignores?
42. Stay Safe (2:17) — Some sort of temporary farewell between Amaya and Janai (splitting up library things?) or Claudia and Terry (leading to her getting attacked by the water dragon?) or Ezran (+ Zym) briefly splitting up from his crownguard
43. Father and Daughter (1:37) — Claudia and Viren most likely, maybe one of the flashbacks to when Soren was sick and how Claudia was introduced to dark magic as a Fix it solution. “I love you Daddy” out of context spoiler?
44. Like Aunt, Like Nephew (2:46) — A conversation between Amaya and Callum or Janai and Rayla about Amaya and Callum, probably. Could be either their good, protective natures, their hair, or their tendency to make some dark humoured off colour jokes
45. We Can Help Them (2:26) — Rayla telling Callum about the coins, and him offering to help and/or Karim being determined that he can still reverse the corrupted core and save the zombiefied elves. If we do get a flashback to Aaravos’ younger years, I could also see him having this viewpoint about humanity (however ‘true’ it is).
50. Times Are Changing (2:21) — Relations between humans and elves in New Aurea / human-dragon Zubeia and Ezran related stuff? This could also be closer to when the Dragang reunite and put the pieces together. Callum and Rayla with whatever they learned about (murdering?) Startouch elves and Ezran with what was gleaned from Evenere (probably the location of Aaravos’ prison, if Callum & co. can decipher the riddle/poem verses)
51. Blood Moon Rises (1:30) — Karim bartering with Kim’Dael, or her showing up of her own accord. Currently leaning toward Rayla and Kim’Dael perhaps not running into each other this season, but if Amaya and Janai bear witness/survive her villainy, Rayla would surely remember and be able to piece it together based on description, leading to a confrontation later
52. If You Kill Me Now (1:59) — Aaravos versus Archdragon confrontations / Viren demanding answers from Aaravos / Kim’Dael and Karim? Janai? / Callum and Rayla possession conversation callback. Either way, delicious, and speaks to the prevalence of murder in this damn children’s show
53. The Wounded Return (2:13) — A failed attempt to take back the corrupted core in Lux Aurea? Or speaks to the idea of “a festering wound” (out of context spoiler). If the kids have had their pirate escapade, this could also be related to the injuries we see Callum sustain in the trailer, which would make sense if anyone else had been hurt as well (hence, plural wounded)
54. To Kill an Archdragon (3:03) — Lore on Luna Tenebris’ death (or something we don’t know about Avizandum’s) or a threat on Zubeia’s life. If Sol Regem has been corrupted by the corrupted core or is just threatening Janai’s reign, figuring out how to stop him will also be crucial
55. Not Yours to Give (4:50) — Been wondering if Karim would even be able to free Kim’Dael, since he’s not the proper heir, and Aditi herself said that the magic was a kind “that takes”. This could also be an Aaravos related flashback since he ‘gave’ humanity something they ‘shouldn’t have’ — whether it was related to primal magic alongside the unicorns, or was the discovery / inclination towards dark magic, we’ll have to see. Could be Viren curing Soren and/or Callum ‘giving’ the Moon fam freedom (but again, have to see). Looking at the “gift giving” motif real meaningfully
56. Deadwood Deserves Dignity (3:03) — If a pirate dies or an according ship is ruined? ‘Deadwood’ isn’t a place in Xadia and sounds like a very pirate-y, seafaring moniker to me
62. Tomorrow the Sun Will Rise (3:07) — So I’ve said before that nothing good ever really happens at dawn/sunrise in this show (Sarai and the queens of Duren dying, Callum’s possession, etc) and I don’t think this is an exception. Karim cites that “This empire is ending, that the rising sun is now a falling star!” so if he’s taken over the kingdom by this point, his tendency to metaphoric language would make sense. A rising sun is also mentioned in Aaravos’ short story, Ripples, following a world changing transformation: “The humans huddled together, scarcely daring to breathe, awaiting the rise of the sun. And when the long, dark night had finally passed—for the sun must always rise, mustn’t it?—they gazed out upon an unfamiliar landscape.” Which also bodes well for predictions that Aaravos will be fully released by the end of S5 as well.

TDP Season 4 Preliminary Predictions, Part One (1-12)
So with S4 in production, no trailer in sight, and a TBA release date, it looks like there’s still a wait before we get any news on the upcoming season.
That being said, we do have some information to go on regarding what might be in store for our favorite characters. (Previous SDCC interviews, the recent Instagram Live and Reddit AMA with the creators, Callum’s Spellbook, and of course, Through the Moon.)
So I decided to put together some preliminary predictions based on the info we have so far. My desire is to create a TDP S4 bingo board just before the season airs, so that gives me 24 guesses/predictions to come up with (not including the free space). I’ll probably tweak most of these once we get our trailer, since I’m sure it’ll provide more insight as to the direction of the show.
So without further ado, here are my first 12 TDP S4 preliminary predictions...
1. Spring 2021 Release
During the Reddit AMA at the beginning of October, the creators gave the following update:
Tumblr media
Since it’s been over a month, we can safely assume they’re in production now.
From what I understand, pre-production is mostly writing and storyboarding, possibly voice recording as well. If they’re in the production phase, that means animation has begun.
Let’s consider the turnaround time for past seasons. S1′s airdate was September 14, 2018; S2′s was February 15, 2019; and S3′s was November 22, 2019. This means that there was only a five month gap between S1 and S2, and a nine month gap between S2 & S3.
The gap between S3 & S4 has been longer than both of those. But considering that we’ve had a global pandemic and that we’ve been waiting on Netflix to greenlight more seasons, this is to be expected. We only heard about the renewal back in July. Assuming the team started work around that time, they’ve already been working for about four months.
If we estimate that it’ll be another five months before we see S4, (nine months in total, same as the wait between S2 and S3), that means it will air around April 2021. Of course, it could air before or after - depending on how long production takes. But I believe it’s safe to say that we could be seeing TDP S4 air in spring 2021.
2. Timeskip < 6 Months
We know from interviews that there will be a timeskip between S3 & S4. If you’ve read Through the Moon, you know that there’s a few weeks in between the end of S3 and the beginning of the graphic novel, and that the events of the story happen in the span of about two weeks. So we can estimate that it’s been about a month between the end of S3 and the end of TTM.
We also know there will be a bit of a timeskip between TTM and the start of S4, per the Reddit AMA, but we’re not sure how long that will be.
My guess? The timeskip between S3 & S4 will be six months or less.
I was initially going to play it safe and say “less than three years,” because anything more than that would require a recast to account for teenage Ezran. (And given how much the creators and fans LOVE Sasha, I doubt a recast will ever happen in the show.)
Tumblr media
But realistically, I don’t think the timeskip will be more than a half a year. The events of TTM imply that the story is very much moving forward, and anything too far in the future would give the audience too much to be caught up on. So it’ll likely be only a few months of a gap between seasons, and definitely less than six.
3. New Clothing & Hair for Characters
Many of the characters in ATLA received either new hairstyles or clothing between the seasons. So following that logic, and given that Ehasz is behind both shows, it stand to reason the same will hold true for TDP.
The creators have confirmed that Callum will be going “sun’s out, gun’s out” for S4. (Their words, not mine.) This makes sense since he now knows how to cast mage wings, and he wants them to be readily accessible at a moment’s notice.
We also see that Rayla’s sporting a new cloak when she leaves at the end of TTM, so she’ll likely have this for S4 as well.
Tumblr media
Ezran may get new garb as well, as he settles into his new role as king.
I also think it’s possible that their hair could change as well. Rayla’s on her own now, so her hair will probably just get longer. Maybe she’ll braid it or wrap it up in a ponytail to keep it out of her face. If Callum returns to Katolis, he might get a haircut in-between seasons. But if he goes straight out to search for Rayla, his hair might be even longer.
Either way, new hair and clothes seems like a given.
4. Older Zym
Tumblr media
The creators have assured us in prior interviews that Zym is still very much a part of this story. It is called The Dragon Prince after all.
That being said, I think it’s possible we’ll see a slightly older Zym next season, especially due to the timeskip. I doubt he’ll get much bigger. He’ll probably go from being the size of a puppy to the size of a full-grown dog. And I don’t think he’ll talk yet. That seems like it won’t be for many years in the future.
Still, I think we can reasonably look forward to seeing an older Zym.
5. Mid Season Rayllum Reunion
I already have a post highlighting the reasons why I think Callum and Rayla will definitely reunite in S4, as I know many fans are wondering if they’ll spend the whole season apart.
But I think this reunion may happen sooner rather than later. By that, I’m guessing it’ll happen at the midway point - either episodes 4 or 5.
This gives us the chance to have three or four whole episodes with them apart, which seems like a reasonable amount. Then we get their reunion, which’ll likely be it’s own episode. Then we get four or five whole episodes with them together again, dealing with the fallout of Rayla’s decision, working together, and hopefully reconciling by the season’s end. This seems like it could be a nice, tidy arc for them to have for the season, so that’s what I’m going to guess will happen.
Plus, it’ll have us feeling all the feels.
6. Janai’s Brother Wants the Throne
It’s been confirmed that Janai and Khessa have a younger, unnamed brother. We know nothing about him, and the creators decided not to comment when asked about him during the AMA. This means that he’ll likely be an important player for S4.
One of the writers (I believe it was Devon) also confirmed via Twitter that Janai is next in line for the throne after her sister’s death, calling her Queen Janai.
This raises a very interesting potential plotline for S4. What if Janai decides to ally with the humans that helped during the battle at the Storm Spire? What if her brother is not happy about this? Letting a human into Lux Area was the reason Khessa died, after all.
What if Janai’s brother decided to make a play for the throne - either by contesting Janai’s rule, threatening civil war, or by trying to usurp the thone?
The creator’s have mentioned that despite the Zym being returned to Xadia, there is still a long road to peace between the elves and humans. They alluded to an “event” that makes Ezran aware of this.
Unrest / war between the Sunfire elves could very easily be what they’re talking about. And Janai’s brother wanting the throne could very easily be the catalyst for that.
7. Aaravos in the Shadows
Tumblr media
Many fans are speculating that our main characters may now finally become aware of Aaravos’s existence in the series. As for me? I’m not so sure.
Keep in mind, outside of Viren, Claudia, and perhaps a handful of Sunfire elves, no one else in the show knows of Aaravos’s existence. He’s been keeping to the shadows, pretty clearly using Viren as his puppet.
With the end of S3, he’s in the cocoon, leaving Viren and Claudia on their own. We don’t know how long it’ll take for him to emerge, or even what form he’ll take when that happens. But we do know that he’ll be back for S4, per Erik Todd Dellums. (And apparently, he’ll have an even sexier voice.)
I imagine he and the dark mage fam will have their own arc in S4, which may eventually intersect with whatever the main cast is up to, but not for awhile yet. As for Aaravos himself, I think he’s playing the long game. And I think part of that means staying in the shadows as much as he possible can, while he consolidates power. The goal it seems is to make his form stronger and stronger, and eventually finding a way to leave the mirror realm entirely. Why would he want to play his cards too early?
So with Viren and Aaravos out of the way for much of S4, who does this leave as the main antagonist?
8. Sol Regem, Main Antagonist
Tumblr media
Enter Sol Regem. It’s been confirmed that we’ll see him again, after all. And we know just how much hatred he has for humans. He was hellbent on frying Callum to a crisp, even after he had agreed to return the human kingdoms.
It was revealed that Sol Regem was once revered by the Sunfire elves, before he became a symbol of rage and bitterness. Still, this reverence is an important part of Sunfire history.
This is something Janai’s brother could leverage if he’s looking to usurp the throne and pit the human-hating Sunfire elves against those that are loyal to Janai. With the literal Sun King on his side, he becomes a formidable foe.
This could be the event that leads Ezran to act. Will the humans who fought at the Storm Spire come to the aid of Janai and her people? Will the Dragon Queen weigh in on this matter? Will they need to gather the other elemental dragons together in hopes of defeating Sol Regem? (If so, this is a way we could bring Rex Igneous into the story.)
This might be a bit of a stretch, of course. But it does lead for an interesting direction for S4, and S5 as well, and would be a way to introduce more dragons and keep Zym and his mother in the story.
And, as I stated in my Rayllum S4 reunion post, this gives Rayla incentive to stop hunting Viren and shift gears to focus on the more emergent threat. Which in turn could reunite Team Zym once again.
9. Rex Igneous Eats a Jelly Tart
Tumblr media
It’s pretty much a given that we will meet Rex Igneous (the Earth dragon) in this season. You can see a sneak peak of him in Callum’s Sketchbook, which has the following caption:
Tumblr media
It was also revealed by the creators that some “very important figures” would be eating jelly tarts in upcoming seasons.
Given this information, it doesn’t seem farfetched to imagine that Rex Igneous will be one of those figures.
10. Soren & Ezran Adventure / Bonding
Tumblr media
Soren used to share his screen time with Claudia, but now that she’s out on her own with her dad, he’ll need a new buddy to share screen time with.
I nominate Ezran, mostly because S3 dealt a lot with their relationship, and it just makes sense to continue to develop this in S4. Plus, Ezran’s the king and Soren’s the guard. Where he goes, Soren follows.
So it makes sense that they’ll have an adventure together in S4.
11. Dramatic Claudia Reveal / Confrontation
I had this on my list for awhile, but Ehasz tweeted this and nearly confirmed it:
Tumblr media
I think we’re going to get either a really dramatic reveal or confrontation between Claudia and another character. Either Viren, Soren, or possibly Callum. (I don’t think it’ll be Rayla, since she has no real connection to Claudia.) Or perhaps it’ll simply be a dramatic reveal for us, the audience.
Either way, stuff’s going down.
12. Callum Learns Moon Arcanum
The creators have mentioned that Callum will be learning more of the primal sources in future seasons. I think it stands to reason that moon will be next for him.
S3 already showed him starting to grasp a lot of the fundamentals of the source - both in their evasion of Sol Regem and in casting the spell to see Rayla’s parents. Through the Moon builds on this even more, with him using moon opals to cast more moon magic, and learning even more from Lujanne regarding the nature of the primal.
Being separated from Rayla might be the push he needs to finally unlock the arcanum once in for all. Perhaps it’ll be key to tracking her down, if he goes after her.
If not, perhaps understanding Rayla’s past and the decision that she made, and their reconciliation is what will trigger it.
Hard to say for sure, but I feel like this will relate to Rayla in some way. And it will definitely happen in S4.
Okay, that’s it for now. I’ll do a part 2 eventually and go through my last 12 predictions.
