Something I’ve always liked about Lab Rats, even back when it first aired, is how untraditional the family structure is. Not only is the family a mixed race, but is also blended family.
Once you add the idea of Donald being the biological uncle of Adam, Bree, and Chase it doesn’t take away from Donald being the father figure to the trio and they don’t start calling Douglas ‘Dad’. Donald raised them. Douglas even moves in and he’s more like uncle to Leo and the trio despite being the biological father. Going even further, Donald is father figure to Leo yet Leo never calls him dad. In fact, the trio doesn’t call him dad either. Still it’s very clear that Donald is the father figure.
What is even more interesting is how quickly Leo and the trio accept each other as siblings. It’s never step-siblings or adopted siblings, it’s always brothers and sister. This happens in like episode 2. The fact that Leo and trio are siblings are never questioned by anyone. It’s just accepted, even the villains.
Tasha from what we see from the show is quick to accept Adam, Bree, and Chase as members of the family. She even seems to pretty okay with Douglas. Granted, she never really interacts with Douglas, but we are never given any reason to think she has any issue with Douglas.
I think Daniel even adds another layer to this messy family. He’s sibling no one knew about, but calls Douglas ‘dad’. It always felt to me as someone trying really hard to fit in when calls Douglas ‘dad’. It’s implied that Daniel has an adopted family that he is very close with. Still, everyone just accepts Daniel as family right away. Daniel is interesting, unexplored, and underdeveloped part of the show.
The only person who has an Dooley-Davenport Family as unit is Rose Dooley aka Leo’s grandma/Tasha’s mom. She doesn’t like Donald all that much and seemed a little freaked out by Adam, Bree, and Chase. She never interacted with Douglas as far as I remember(correct me if I’m wrong). The narrative of the show frames this as wrong point of view. Rose is always has to learn the lesson that Donald and the trio are family and good for Tasha and Leo.
The Dooley-Davenport family is messy and confusing from an outsider’s point of view. There are tons of people in real life with confusing family structures like this. Some people are raised by grandparents or uncles or family friends. Sometimes, people can be close to cousins like they are siblings. Families are messy, but that’s okay as long as there is love. That’s really why I’ve always loved the Dooley-Davenport family it’s messy and non-traditional like so many people’s in real life.

I think the fact that in most lref/lr fics, the bionic three often call Tasha 'mom' while they still call Donald 'Mr Davenport,' even if they aren't anti-donald, really says something.
Like, even people who aren't blatantly against Donald are still very aware that the bionic three don't feel safe enough to call Donald by a parental honorific, let alone his first name

All the Rats are neurodivergent because I said so. Here as some headcanons that might as well be canon
ND Rats for the win
Leo and Chase are both so autistic, they bond over their nerdy little hyperfixations and it drives Mr Davenport up the walls from the constant chattering of the two
Bree has ADHD that went under the radar for years, it isn’t until they all start going to school and she starts complaining about struggling to focus when Chase tells her that she definitely has ADHD.
Chase has literally diagnosed all the rats with things, he’s the smartest person alive so of course he’ll be able to diagnose people with things. I believe me and Aster came up with this hc but I’m not entirely certain who it was now.
Adam is the classic example of male ADHD, it was caught at a very early age. Davenport always uses it to excuse Adam’s behaviours towards Chase. Adam is always confused about that though because ‘no, I actually meant to punch him, it wasn’t an accident’
Leo is actually AuDHD (unofficial term for a person who is both autistic and has ADHD) which means he never stops running his mouth. Chase grows to appreciate the silences being filled in the lab for once.
Bree never stops moving, often times she’s super speeding whatever stim she’s doing at that time. As a kid she would super jump over and over again until she was physically stopped because the dust she was kicking up would make Chase get itchy and sneezy.
Chase doesn’t stim openly because Mr Davenport once told him he looked like an idiot. (He didn’t actually say idiot, the word actually begins with an R and it’s a slur I refuse to say even though I’m autistic)
Adam really struggles at school, Chase used to make fun of him until he realised that Adam was genuinely really struggling badly. He not tries to help him study and do his homework, sometimes he actually just does his homework if Adam is having a bad day.
Bree is constantly bullied for being the ‘weird’ girl, she tries to fit in by copying outfits she sees in magazines. Adam picks up on it, miraculously, and tells her that she looks really boring now.
Adam matches outfits with Bree to make her feel less self conscious. It helps a lot and Adam actually really likes matching outfits with his sister. Bree really enjoys it too. BRING BACK OUR WONDERFUL WEIRD GIRL BREE. I hate LREF for changing her entire weird girl personality.
Chase genuinely just can’t dress himself. His outfits always clash and he just can’t figure out how to pair things together. Tasha takes him shopping and matched all his outfits for him which helps him get an idea of what matches and what doesn’t. He really loves his new mum. (I cannot say ‘mom’ it genuinely pains me)
Leo introduces Chase to the concept of safe foods when Chase freaked out over the texture of some food in his lunch at school. Chase has so many non-perishable snacks in his locker for days that he’s struggling.
Leo also has so many snacks in his locker, Adam and Bree are always stealing food from both of them.
Chase had a huge meltdown at school when he got overstimulated by all the noise. They had been on a mission the night prior that involved a lot of loud noises from an explosion and school the next day just completely threw him over the edge. His siblings found him huddled in the corner of a janitors closet and that’s when they decided to force Mr Davenport to make Chase some bionic noise cancelling headphones.
Leo is the only person allowed into their capsules, he typically only goes in them if he’s feeling overstimulated because they’re soundproof and noise cancelling. He prefers Chase’s one over Adam and Bree’s because it doesn’t have a strong smell to it. Bree’s one always smells of perfume and Adam’s smells like sweaty teen boy mixed with Lynx body spray. (I recently found out that Lynx is called Axe in the US)
Chase loves physical affection which often gives him imposter syndrome because it makes him think he’s faking being autistic. It isn’t until Leo tells him that he’s the same way that Chase understands how diverse autism is. Of course he knows it’s a spectrum but sometimes he just gets all up in his head about it.
The Rats aren’t really friends with other people. They hang out with each other and don’t stray too far away. They got even more uncomfortable having other friends after the Marcus incident.
Marcus was the first person that didn’t call them weird after their first interaction. Chase was so upset when Marcus betrayed them because he thought someone finally wanted to be his friend. Plus the fact that Marcus nearly killed his brother.
Chase is easily manipulated because he’s autistic. He finds it hard to read people and know if they have ulterior motives.
Adam is very open about having ADHD, Bree mentions it in passing sometimes whereas Chase isn’t very open about being autistic. He was bullied heavily in high school for it and he isn’t prepared for the media to bully him too. At least at school he could escape it when he came home, he doesn’t think he could cope if it was all online 24/7.
Kaz is so excited to find out Chase is autistic, he then very excitedly tells Chase that Oliver is autistic too. Chase is enamoured at how someone is so happy that another person is autistic. It makes him feel really good about himself.
Chase and Kaz get on better than Bree would have expected considering Kaz has ADHD and is very loud. Chase appreciates having someone that understands his sensory issues because Kaz does get it. Kaz will be quiet if he notices Chase is having a hard time dealing with his super senses that day.
The reason Chase loves hanging out in all the labs is because they’re all underground and quiet. Of course there are still some noises that normal people wouldn’t hear but it’s much less than the ones above ground.
This has been very fun to write. Lmk if you want more and of course you can send in ideas or headcanons to discuss.

i'm on the parallel universe episode of lab rats and took notes on a few things
Tasha, despite having the same role as Donald in the main universe, does not keep Leo in the basement and lets him go to school
Tashas last name is still Dooley which kinda leads me to believe that Dooley is her maiden name and not Leo's father name
Also this means that Tasha and Donald never fell in love despite spending so much time together
Im very curious as to who Adam Bree and Chases family are in this universe. Since their last name is Henderson and Donald has no idea who they are
I also took note in the fact that even though Adam Bree and Chase had what we can assume to be a normal childhood they seem to be just as close as they are in the main universe despite them all being so different in personality
do with this information what you will

Considering that Horace met Bridget on a dating site, & Tasha met Donald on a dating site, it's entirely plausible that there's an alternate universe where Horace Diaz and Tasha Dooley are married.

i frickin love how in Lab Rats anytime there’s a reunion scene of any kind, Chase always goes and hugs Davenport first, Adam always goes to Tasha first and Bree usually hugs Leo first. i just think that’s sweet and it’s a nice pattern

Random Lab Rats family headcanon:
* mostly includes Leo *
* will add more as I think of them *
* tw: some mental health discussion *
* will add Oliver, Kaz, and Skylar here later *
• whenever Bree would get up to try to get something, and she says, "I'll be quick," Leo would always reply with "Not too quick." He used to say it when they're around people who aren't family members, but then he kept the tradition even when the world already knows about her abilities.
It annoyed her to no end in the beginning, but as they get older, it becomes their inside joke.
• Adam once sold his car to a guy at the park in exchange of the St. Bernard puppies he was selling. Donald and Tasha, of course, were mortified and had to go out to bargain with the park guy to get the car back.
Meanwhile, Adam had Bree, Chase, and Leo help him bathe the puppies. He named them that night: Twinky, Snoball, Donut, Zinger, and Cupcake.
Chase frowned as Adam gave him Zinger to dry off. "You named them after Hostess cakes?"
"Yeah?"
"Why?" Bree asked, chuckling.
Adam shrugged. "'Cause I'm hungry."
• Sadly, Adam couldn't keep the puppies, even after telling his parents that he got them to give to his younger siblings. He was extremely down about it, so Tasha talked Donald into letting Adam help them find good homes for the pups.
To Tasha's surprise, her mom and dad decided to adopt one, namely, Cupcake. This made Adam happy, knowing that he can play with and walk Cupcake whenever they visit the Dooleys.
• while the three of them were hanging out, chatting and drinking one night, Tasha happened to mention a coworker who's going through a divorce. "If you guys ever divorce, who's getting the kids?" Douglas asked Tasha and Donald.
The two only stared at him.
"I mean, hypothetically," Douglas insisted.
No one says anything for a while, but when it was obvious Douglas was truly curious and wouldn't drop it, Donald replied with, "I don't know. Adam's almost 19, and Bree's turning 18 next month. We don't have to contest for the two of them. Chase will probably end up with me, and Leo will be with Tasha."
"Why are we even talking about this?" Tasha asked. "Donald and I have no plans of divorcing. At all."
"What happens to me?" Douglas asked Donald.
Donald shot him a baffled look. "Me. You're staying with me," he said. That should have been obvious. "You're my brother."
"Oh." Douglas sat on that information as he picked up some fries. Before washing it down with beer, he muttered, "That's sad."
Donald frowned at him.
"Can I still visit Leo?" Douglas asked Tasha with all seriousness.
Tasha blinked. "Sure?" She laughed, finding this all amusing. "Douglas. Your brother and I aren't divorced. We're not planning to. We're all staying together."
"So I can keep the kids."
"No, Donald and I keep the kids. You get to watch over them and make sure they're happy and safe."
"Like a third parent."
"Exactly."
"But I don't see why we can't just divide the kids. There's three of us, and there's four of them. There's enough for all of us!"
"Yeah, and what do you propose we do, Douglas? Divide one of the kids in three?" Donald asks. "How does that even make sense?"
"Look, we don't have to." He takes another swig of beer. "I can just take one. One of you can have two. Now, I know Chase is your favorite, so you can have him."
"Okay?"
"Now, I know Leo's yours and all," he tells Tasha, "but can't you just take Adam and Bree? Like, that's two, right? That's better than one. And Adam loves having you as a mom. Bree also likes having a mom. It's a win-win."
"Douglas, I'm not giving you my son," Tasha said.
"Why not?"
"I gave birth to him!"
Douglas frowns, sinking into his chair with defeat. "I don't see how that's fair," he muttered. "Just because men can't have babies..."
It dawned on Donald then that Douglas was on his third bottle. He was far from being absolutely slapped, but his questions and lines of thought should've been indicative of how buzzed he already was.
He sighed. "Look, you can take care of Leo..."
"I can?"
"Yes," Donald said as he carefully took the beer bottle away from him, "because you're his uncle. It'd be great if you show the same favoritism towards the other kids, though."
"Well, if all of them are my favorites, then I don't have any favorites."
True. It kinda annoyed Donald that his brother made sense and didn't at the same time. "Why don't we just stop here and get a ride home?" he offered amiably. He took out his phone and said, "It's too late to call the driver, so let's just take an Uber."
There was a pause. Then, "Honey."
"Yeah?"
"We're home." A grin was growing on Tasha's face. "We've never left the house."
Confused, Donald looked around him.
Behind him was the pool, the house. On top of their table, in the midst of all the food and snacks, was the vintage bottle of wine he said he'd been wanting to try.
It was almost empty.
Realizing what his older brother had realized, Douglas chuckled. "Chase is gonna have a rooooooough year," he said.
The grin on Tasha's face vanished when she rolled her eyes. "Again, Douglas: we're not divorced."
• Later on, in his mid-20s, Chase discovers that he has developed panic disorder due to his commando app (the activation of it on and off throughout the years has created a chemical imbalance in his brain). The first person he came to for help after the initial attacks? Tasha. She's the only one he trusts. He feels Donald would keep dismissing it like he did the first two times, and Douglas would try to solve it (which isn't really what he needs). Meanwhile, he feels Adam, Bree, and the EF team would just make fun of him.
Tasha helps Chase find the right therapist for him, which they do. Leo also becomes one of the first support systems for Chase since he, too, went through anxiety and depression when he was younger.
Chase finds comfort in them when days are tough, which brings them all closer together. (This leads to Chase's first slip of calling Tasha "mom." He apologized, but Tasha tells him she's okay with whatever he's comfortable with. So, soon enough, he just starts calling her Mom.)

So, it's canon that Tasha knows when people are lying.
So the idea that Chase is like... lying about his feelings about Kaz and Tasha is just like 'sweetie...'
