Favourite movies of 2020
Here it is, my favourite first movie watches of 2020!
I know I’m a little late with this but I don’t care.
10. Pulp Fiction
“I do believe Marsellus Wallace, my husband, your boss, told you to take ME out and do WHATEVER I WANTED. Now I wanna dance, I wanna win. I want that trophy, so dance good.”
I didn’t know a lot about this movie going into it, I knew a few little things because this movie tends to be referenced some but other than that I knew nothing. for my first Tarantino movie it was good and I’ll definitely be watching more of his work. I enjoyed watching, but I can see why not everyone would.
Tumblr media
9. Superbad
“I am Mclovin’.”
This movie lived up to my expectations. I felt happy and laughed, I felt sad and almost cried a little. I’m glad I watched this movie at the time I did because I’m close to graduating high school and, unsurprisingly, I am not popular so it was nice to have a movie like this that I found relatable.
Tumblr media
8. The Goonies
“Goonies never say die!”
I had a fun time watching this. I know that because this was made in the 80′s some things don’t look as good now as they did back then, but I still enjoyed this movie a lot! the kids and adults had good performances and the set was pretty cool, especially that pirate ship. this made me feel good and like a kid again, which was nice because I was watched this April (during lock down) so it was nice to have a little distraction.
Tumblr media
7. Mulan
“The greatest gift and honor is having you as a daughter.”
Mulan is now in the top three for favourite Disney princesses. the songs, mushu, the story, the empowerment, and the heart warming moments are all the elements that made this movie amazing and iconic. definitely wish I watched this sooner because I never knew what I was missing out on!
Tumblr media
6. 10 Things I Hate About You
“Hello, Katarina. Make anyone cry today?” “Sadly, no. But it's only 4:30.”
Not going to lie the ‘I hate everything in the world but her’ trope is something that always gets to me, go ahead make fun of me but I know you’re jealous. great main and side characters, with lots of great moments (yes I am talking about the staircase song scene).
Tumblr media
5. Blackkklansman
“All power to all the people.”
wow, just wow. this movie. while this was a slow paced movie, it worked for it. this movie was not meant to be fast paced or the entire point of movie would have just been over looked. I really wish I could’ve watched this back in 2018 in theaters, but I’m glad I watched it in 2020 because I don’t think I would’ve appreciated it as much as I do.
Tumblr media
4. Back To The Future
“Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads.”
what a fun movie! definitely in my top 80s movies, even though I haven’t watched many. great plot with great characters and some good songs that made it onto my main spotify playlist.
Tumblr media
3. Rocketman
“People don’t pay to see Reginald Dwight, they pay to see Elton John.”
I will never stop saying, because it is true, and that is this movie deserved the hype that bohemian rhapsody got (if not more). taron egerton gives an incredible performance as elton john, both with acting and singing. and those costumes were amazing! I could write a full rant about how this movie was snubbed at the oscars, but I don’t want to take up too much of your time.
Tumblr media
2. Kick-Ass
“With no power comes no responsibility, but that wasn’t true.”
I didn’t know what I was expecting from movie, but I can 100% tell you I was not expecting it to become a favourite of mine. everything about this movie was incredible! the plot and humor are pretty good, the characters are all amazing in their own ways, and I have to say those actions scenes are pretty incredible.
Tumblr media
1. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
“Scott earned the power of self respect!”
this movie lived up to every expectation I had for it, but I also not expecting this to become a favourite of mine. the plot, characters, soundtrack, and action all fit together extremely well to make it the masterpiece it is. I could watch this movie everyday and never get sick of it. I will never shut up about this movie, never.

Digital editing of actors vs real life
With the vast technologies we have today, it’s possible to alter actors’ ages to fit with a film’s story. However, I don’t see this as always necessary. For some time now in a variety of media forms, different actors were used to represent different stages in a character’s life. Therefore, this was a technique that audiences grew to accept.
In the example of Rocketman (Fletcher, 2019), there’s 3 actors who play Elton. This works well as each incarnation is around a similar age to that which they’re playing. Then, the prosthetics on Taron Egerton give a realistic impression of him aging. However, if this was done digitally, using just Taron, then I’m not sure it would’ve been as effective. The uncanny nature of this could’ve detracted from the evolution of Elton, plus I feel there’d be something jarring about Taron attempting to do a pubescent voice.
Yes, technology can restore actors to their youth, such as Will Smith in Gemini Man (Lee, 2019), but there’s something natural about having a multitude of actors play one role in different time periods that no technology can ever replace. It’s more familiar to audiences, and for that reason, it’s more effective.

I've seen this posted about many times, but was interested to ask you what you think about this. At what point in the movie do you think that John started playing Elton, and when do you think Elton realized this?
Interesting question! I have to say, despite what Taron and Richard have said about how they played their relationship very genuinely in the beginning, I never really felt that. I always had the sense that John was sort of taking advantage of Elton and never saw him as an equal but as someone he could play with, in a manner of speaking. Elton was innocent and John knew it. Not to say that, and I’m strictly talking about the movie not reality at all, John didn’t have any real feelings for Elton, I think he was very interested in him and admired his talent, but to me he always saw him as a sort of an inexperienced kid; someone who admired John for everything he did because he was older and more worldly. John enjoyed the admiration he got from Elton vs. genuinely caring about him. He also knew that Elton would go along with anything John suggested because Elton wanted to be more like him and was deeply in love with him. John knew that he could do whatever he wanted to do and Elton would either let it slide or try to follow along. But at the same time, I never saw it as John suddenly manipulating Elton, that control was always there, Elton just didn’t notice it because the control was comfortable at first. “Think big! What do you really want?” doesn’t sound manipulative, but this comes directly on the heels of John asking Elton what he wanted and Elton replied “Dinner with you.” In other words: affection, connection, love. John chuckled at that, immediately disregarding it, and told him to think bigger than that. He got him hooked on shopping, drugs, and other elements of a wild, dangerous lifestyle.
Obviously the moment in the movie where you start to realize that things aren’t as happy as they seem is in the car, when John tells Elton to stop sulking and call his mom. This is done so callously, especially when it’s directly follows the moment Elton was crushed by his father’s actions, and immediately made me bristle at John. Then of course, the slap. It’s always hard for me to swallow the later scene, when Elton goes out to the pool and starts with “Darling”, seemingly having forgotten, or forgiven, John’s actions. And that is the scene we see how truly disconnected John is from Elton’s emotions. As Elton yells at him, desperate for some way to control a life and relationship that’s spinning out of his grasp, John just smiles. He’s amused by Elton’s grief. And then disregards it and goes on with his day, essentially telling Elton that his feelings don’t matter and what he wants doesn’t have any weight. In that moment, Elton was shown, more than any other, how much John valued him—or rather didn’t.

My take on Rocketman vs BoRhap
I want to start with saying that I love both of these films! Rocketman is everything I wanted from borhap, especially in terms of LGBT+ representation. However there are several fundamental differences:
1. Sir Elton is still very much alive and strong and happy, and both him and his husband are producers of the film. This means that Rocketman gets a lot more room to negotiate what can be put in, and what should be kept out. He is there to say "yes, I'm ok with talking about my relationship with this person" or "no, I don't want to share that". Whereas Freddie is not with us anymore, and even though Brian and Roger were very involved with the project, they cannot make the same kind of decision for Freddie as Elton can for Rocketman. They come from a much more protective and defensive perspective.
2. Elton is rather open and comfortable about his sexuality now, and he has a loving family with his husband and kids. Freddie was never very open about his sexuality, and perhaps he would have been able to open up more if he was here with us today. But since he never did open up, the way BoRhap addressed that seems more appropriate.
3. Rocketman is rated R, whereas Borhap is rated PG-13. They have entirely different goals. Rocketman wants to tell a more raw and explicit story, which they can from #1, but BoRhap wants to reach as many audience as possible because Queen is for everyone. And because of this, they chose very different aspects of their lives to tell and very different ways of telling it.
4. BoRhap had 💩 as director and had to find Dexter to replace him in the middle of filming. Whereas Rocketman has the amazing Dexter from start to finish.
5. Just because Taron sang beautifully and was amazing as Elton does NOT at all take away from the fact that Rami was amazing as Freddie! The two does not contridict each other what so ever, they are not even related! They are both talented amazing actors!
6. John Reid? Is there a time where u don't fuck up??

why rocketman is better than bohemian rhapsody
- a novel by me
idk the people who say borhap and rocketman are both great movies for different reasons are clearly just blind and hate fun
(for the record, this is just my opinion. rocketman is by no means a perfect movie but for me it is definitely miles above borhap. also, i was drunk when i wrote this and only made mild edits before posting it so maybe don't take it too seriously)
first of all, rocketman is a musical, which by default puts it above like 99% of other existing films (the other 1% are pride and into the spiderverse because reasons)
all the songs in rocketman are sung by the cast themselves, which allows you to get into the story way better (also, taron's voice > the entire filmography of bryan singer)
rocketman isn't directed by a pedophile
that one moment during saturday night's alright where taron is eyeing up a twink with an elvis haircut has done more to fight against homophobia than the entirety of borhap
the straight beard love interest of the protagonist in rocketman gets about 0.1% of the screen time, while mary,, you know
elton gets out of his addiction and mental health issues by going to therapy and actually taking responsibility for his actions, while holy mary magically saves freddie from his wicked gay ways
instead of spending all of their time and money on making sure that the live aid scene is shot 100% accurately, rocketman invests it into actually creating an engaging story and character development
a villain who just happens to be gay vs. a villain who's evil because he's gay
elton having issues and resolving them vs. freddie being an asshole and having to crawl back on his hands and knees to beg his bandmates for forgiveness
except for a couple continuity errors amd some changes to spice up the story, rocketman is a pretty accurate depiction of elton's life that doesn't change his entire history for the sake of ''''drama''''
editing that is actually bearable and doesn't change shots every .2 seconds
the love interest being introduced by genuine two-sided flirting and a tender sex scene vs. freddie groping his servant's ass
elton's sexuality being hinted at throughout the entire movie vs. freddie watching a hunky bear get into a gas station's toilet once
elton's first gay experience being a consentual kiss from a soul musician before going on stage >>> freddie's first gay experience being pr*nter forcing himself onto him
elton turning into a giddy school girl when john comes to visit him in the studio >>> lamp scene
since rocketman has musical scenes and fantasy elements in it, it's not very likely that someone will leave that movie and think they just saw a 100% accurate representation of elton's life, which happened a lot with borhap since it took itself way too seriously
feel free to add more 🤙🏼

For your review: I believe Rocketman did a better job of portraying Elton's homosexuality vs how BoRhap portrayed Freddie's. I also think Rocketman has nicer editing, scene transitions, and choreography. (I can elaborate on these points if you'd like)
I 100% agree!! Most of the time I even forgot Taron WASN'T Elton, he just did so fucking good! Rami did a good job as Freddie but it wasn't nearly as believable to me. They really had a much more realistic and positive connotation to Elton's homosexuality whereas in Bo Rhap it kind of felt like every "gay" scene was a bit of a dirty little secret, ya know?
