The Menu
This excellent post by @vacationship got me thinking about this today - I've still got e9 and e10 to rewatch, so please forgive any notable omissions:
Claire first encounters Carmy at the deep freeze while he's buying a re-up of veal stock for an R&D dish, stoked after spending the day brainstorming the "chaos menu....but thoughtful" with Sydney in his kitchen.
Ignoring the visual warning cues (blue hues, just faces vs. the whole picture/setting, fridges etc), she's interrupting the creative development process Sydney and Carmy initiated. He tries to extrapolate himself with the whole fake number thing (and initiates a "palate cleanse" in the next episode, which is a five-star euphemism - he's trying to get back to center after the encounter) only for it to permanently fly off the rails as Sydney heads over to Kasama ("palate cleanse" + Kasama meaning "together" - agghh!)
"Thoughtful" vanishes from the description, it's referred to only as the 'Chaos Menu' thereafter (I know Carmy tries to reinforce "thoughtful" one more time, but he mumbles it hesitantly). Carmy is stuck in the reactionary washing machine of his PTSD again - unless it was an idea that Sydney brought him directly prior to Claire entering his life, all of the oft-discussed and drawn dishes harken back to the feast of the seven fishes, Mikey and Donna, the prospect of Claire literally being delivered on a silver platter that night by the brothers Grimm.
I think back to Carmy later decrying "this is what you wanted!!" to Sydney as they're fighting over the menu drawings/Claire in E8. It really shows us where this all landed - Carmy launched himself into chaos with this new relationship, embracing the flight/fight/freeze/FAWN mode in order to deliver Syd the Chaos Menu he perceives they were creating (or she was just requesting, in his weird little mind...) in the beginning.
His experiences with Claire (with the subsequent guilt and discomfort they're bringing him in the quest for "amusement or enjoyment" so he can serve others) are what he views as the creative process in the development of his menu for Syd. He's doing a deep dive into the murky and traumatizing depths of his past/present to deliver this thing, and he doesn't understand why she's not more pleased about it.
He really doesn't realize that the "thoughtful" part of the menu was shorthand for Syd's collaboration. "Thoughtful" meant resolution and a sense of peace, a fresh start - chaos menu is just shorthand for the same cycles that have kept Carmy trapped for time immemorial, and that's what he got when he mentally leaned on Claire instead of Syd as his creative partner.
I guess I'll think about this more over the next few days....I kinda want to do a deep dive into the genesis of the dishes at some point, there's so much there.

SOV Six-Pack Maximum Impact Lance "I know it's you JR Bookwalter, don't try to fool me twice!" Randas is back and this time he's bringing James Black with him ...again. oh and Chickboxer's boyfriend too. Of course it makes sense to reuse a bunch of the cast when you're embarking on the insane quest of filming 6 features in 7 months. We ditch the more comedic aspects of Chickboxer and push further into the action genre in this entry as Maximum Impact goes the more tried and true revenge thriller route in the vein of Death Wish. Except we're playing by SOV rules which pretty much means there are none, what should be the "inciting incident" which normally ends the first act actually comes here at a little over half the runtime. Which means the movie basically skips the 2nd act and goes right to the third ...or maybe it only has a second act and no third ...it certainly ends while suggesting the story is far from over and a non-existent sequel. Fuck Syd Field, what does he know about SOV movies? It's still low on gore which is a shame because this random ass insurance agent sure has a fuckton of guns. Like for real this white dude's basement arsenal is like "he would have definitely been at the Capitol riots" big. There's a lot of the standard revenge thriller hallmarks, including (SPOILER) the killing of a plot point ...I'm sorry I meant wife. But this is already almost immediately after his friend is murdered while being tricked into starring in a snuff film. So this dude is getting double revenge I guess, kinda putting a hat on a hat, one dead associate should be enough especially cuz this movie's only 60 minutes and already feels like Death Wish on fast forward. Hey there are worse things I could be doing for an hour like that time my dad made me smash a bag full of baby ducks with a hammer. Wait no, that didn't happen to me. What the fuck am I thinking about? Why is the image of a bag full of smushed ducks stuck in my brain? This isn't a bit I'm genuinely confused and scared. https://www.instagram.com/p/CNlCdx6FDOF/?igshid=17rm5gat5q558

On "Nobody Is Listening," Zayn Tells a Vulnerable Modern Love Story

On "Nobody Is Listening," Zayn Tells a Vulnerable Modern Love Story
Tumblr media
With every subsequent Zayn album, the previous One Direction member-turned-solo R& B aficionado sinks deeper into his burgeoning novel sound. Nobody Is Hearing , out January fifteen, is his third report as a solo artist, using this album — the lyrics to these songs, the attitude, the storytelling — Zayn combines 10 years of experience with a callous desire to be curious and fresh. Nobody Can be Listening is really a demonstration of both weeknesses and refined musical gewandtheit.
In terms of overarching concept, No one Is Listening is a concise love tale, a satisfying and sincere portrayal of modern romance. The particular album seems to mimic the particular journey of the singer’s connection with his long-term partner Gigi Hadid . After a publicly turbulent past several years, the set have recently presented their own relationship through the lens associated with gushy love-letter captions, smooches on Instagram, and the birth of an infant — that will turbulence has appeared to possess settled into something sensitive and joyous. His single career debuted with a splashy display of affection pertaining to his then-new girlfriend Gigi Hadid in the “PILLOWTALK” music video, which at this point feels like a passionate prelude for this contemporary tale.
Zayn begins the photo album with a somewhat gratuitously spectacular spoken word intro, entitled “Calamity, ” in which this individual ponders nostalgia, analogies, dreams, and death, before responsive the album title, “Nobody is listening to me. ” But it becomes clear afterwards that “Calamity” sets the particular scene for a linear storytelling album, each song guiding the mood through shows of rejection, desperation, wish, and warmth. He expounds upon the hurt, trouble sleeping, and frustration described within “Calamity” in the songs “Better” and “Outside. ” This individual sings of ending a hard relationship with someone he or she loves to prevent further harm in the lyrics, “‘Cause occasionally it’s better that way/Gotta let it go so your heart shouldn’t break. ” He then gets into a phase of returning and bargaining, singing, “Leave my life outside, or allow me to in, ” and, “Do I keep the dog, or even do you want him? ” within “Outside, ” co-written along with Khalid and Charlie Attractive.
“When Love’s Around” shapes the second operate, with singer-songwriter Syd taking poppy opening verse because the song walks back upon previous declarations of stress and ending. It’s the well-chosen duet; the mood-lifting synth and pretty words make it impossible not to really feel hopeful for the narrator’s quest for love.
Yet never fear — simply because Zayn’s unruly romance continues to be combed into a satisfying plus fulfilling love, doesn’t indicate he’ll ever stop performing horny songs. “Sweat” plus “Windowsill” give us the particular Mind associated with Mine -style music about sex that Zayn has made his signature. Their deep, silky vocals are created for love songs, however the brooding star’s gold-standard sexual intercourse appeal will never not show up.
youtube
He softens the sharp highs plus lows of the album tale with two gorgeously sensitive and melodious love tunes, “Tightrope” and “River Street. ” He sings the chorus of “Something informed me it was you” with repetitious gravitas, to a melody that will evokes an old-school Bollywood cadence. Those stanzas are usually sandwiched with lyrics through Indian singer Mohammad Rafi’s romantic 1960 song, “Chaudhvin Ka Chand. ” The sample choice, which usually translates to, “Are you the complete moon or are you sunlight? Whatever you are, I claim to God, you are incredible, ” feels intimate, helping a purpose beyond a display associated with diasporic identity. The Urdu lyrics, filmy and melodic, are sung in a vocabulary known regionally for its poetic and romantic literature.

What Should BE THE FEAR....
WHAT SHOULD BE THE FEAR is a one-man show written by Jolie Tong and Ralf Jean-Pierre, directed by Jolie Tong and starring Ralf Jean-Pierre. This debut production, produced by Brooklyn Wildlife, will debut at Gamba Forest Gallery, 231 Norman Ave. in Greenpoint Brooklyn, Thursday, 8pm July 13th, and continue to run every Thursday and Friday through Aug 4th. To promote the opening of the show Precious Gorgeous (Ralf) has released the music video for the first single from the play's score, "SYD (Survive your Dreams)", featuring Crimdella and Shelbi Bennett, which can be seen at http://precgorgralf.space/whatshouldbethefear/.
WHAT SHOULD BE THE FEAR tells the astonishing true story of Ralf's 2012 year-long, 4000 mile tour of the United States, by bicycle, alone, zealously performing impromptu street theater of one-man Shakespeare scenes to unsuspecting audiences. This vision-quest was Ralf’s desperate attempt to master the debilitating fear that reared its head in wake the sudden passing of his best friend, a fear that threatened to prevent him from growing as an artist and a man. Playing all the peculiar characters he encountered on his tour through the American frontier, Ralf Jean-Pierre puts the audience in his bicycle seat as he portrays the harrowing, transformative adventures he experienced on his offbeat odyssey. WHAT SHOULD BE THE FEAR is the tale of a troubled young man pedaling down a winding, unknowable road armed with nothing but some Shakespeare and an open heart, determined to do anything but turn back.
The play also features a gorgeous original blues-rap songs and score written and composed by Ralf, from an album also entitled WHAT SHOULD BE THE FEAR, accompanied by musician Omar Haddad. Recorded entirely with live Blues and Rock & Roll musicians, Ralf designed the record to sound and feel like the varied places and adventures he expeienced on his tour.
Ralf Jean-Pierre is a Haitian-American actor from Brooklyn.  He received a BFA in Performing Arts from Savannah College of Art & Design and studied at The People's Improv Theater, Dance New Amsterdam, and with renowned clown teachers Eric Davis and Christopher Bayes. Ralf is also a rapper-singer-songwriter who performs as Precious Gorgeous, and his work blurs the lines between rock & roll and hip-hop. Ralf is part of a NY based artists’ collective known as the #BlackGodPantheon. Jolie Tong is a native New Yorker.  The granddaughter of Chinese immigrants, her work explores identity, family and culture.  Jolie is interested giving voice and visibility to the "other" by telling their stories, thereby expanding the American narrative.  Jolie received her MFA in directing from Brooklyn College and is currently a faculty member in the Department of Theater at Brooklyn College.   Favorite productions include:  The Tempest, She Kills Monsters, Mauritius and Living Out.

There’s nothing wrong (and often quite a bit right) with TV’s mainstream, tried-and-true superhero modes, but those whose tastes lie in that direction may want to seek their cape fixes elsewhere: In look, style, and tone, “Legion” is not interested in an incremental update to what is offered by solid shows like “Supergirl” and “Luke Cage.”
“Legion,” a Marvel-inspired drama from “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley, is not timid. It offers a jittery take on many of the genre’s familiar themes, and it hurls them together with such boldness that the entire concoction ends up carrying quite a kick. Like I said, it won’t be for everyone, but those who are pulled into the surreal, jagged orbit of this distinctive drama are likely to stay there for the full eight-episode run. It is, literally and figuratively, a trip — and it’s often an exhilarating one.
Hawley’s work sometimes has a formal chilliness to it; it’s not unusual for him to spin his tales from an observational remove that can cause an audiences to respect the construction of a composition, a scene, or a character without fully engaging with those elements on an emotional or psychological level. Casting tends to ameliorate that tendency toward the clinical, and that was especially true in the second season of “Fargo,” in which Ted Danson, Bokeem Woodbine, and Kirsten Dunst were among the brilliant actors who gave their characters the kind of depth that made their struggles more poignant and immediate.
“Legion” doesn’t keep its lead character at a remove — if anything, it quite often puts the audience inside the point of view of David Haller (Dan Stevens), a man who has struggled with mental illness all his life. Or has he? Like many a lead character in comic books and fantasy fiction, Haller comes to find that what had been the defining challenge of his life may actually be an untapped source of strength and power. What if, instead of an institutionalized and heavily medicated man diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, he’s really a world-shaking hero?
Things do tend to tremble and rumble when Haller is around: When he’s overcome by strong emotions, objects begin to fly around the room, and he’s quite capable of inflicting great damage on his surroundings. “Legion” depicts these moments with highly stylized set pieces that bristle with so much kinetic energy that the screen practically vibrates. The show’s British Invasion style and mod fashions only add to the spiky and arresting aesthetic of “Legion,” which is what you’d get if “The Prisoner” and an early Pink Floyd album had a baby together.
Stevens’ performance is the glue that keeps “Legion” from flying apart: His vulnerability and his skill at transitioning between hopelessness and hope is continually impressive, as is the deft ways he indicates that a tender sliver of yearning optimism exists in David’s otherwise frightened and frustrated soul. Whatever brittleness exists in “Legion” is softened by Stevens’ exceptional presence and commitment to the character, and scenes from a budding romance between David and his new friend, Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller), provide moments of solace in a viewing experience that can otherwise be exceptionally intense.
“Legion” is derived from the works of comics greats Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, and, underneath the show’s surface, the usual genre engines are present and accounted for: There’s a quest to escape bad people with a nebulous agenda, a hero who must recognize and hone his powers before he can join the battle with the forces of evil, a wise elder who guides and instructs the new recruit, a wild-card sidekick, and a love interest with her own agenda and challenges. “Legion” doesn’t go too far afield from its origins: Like any good superhero franchise, it has explosions, witty quips, and cool clothes.
The show’s homages come thick and fast, and they aren’t especially subtle — not that they need to be; spotting the references can be half the fun. David is housed in the “Clockworks” mental-health facility, where the uniforms often come in shades of orange; Syd is named after a founding member of Pink Floyd; and there are echoes of Dumbledore and Charles Xavier in Jean Smart’s mentor character, Melanie Bird. At one point, members of the ensemble drop everything for a dance number that looks equally influenced by the French New Wave, the Who’s “Quadrophenia,” and “A Hard Day’s Night.” And it works.
Peel back all the influences and sturdy genre tropes, and on one level, “Legion” is yet another show about a middle-class white man with anger issues. The roots of David’s rage are vague, but its manifestations are not; without giving away too much about his visions, what he sees when he takes the lid off his repressed emotions is often deeply troubling. The challenge of “Legion” will be to make David’s quest for wholeness more than the sum of its flashy and often captivating parts. But the humane core of the drama offers a reason to hope for the best.
“Legion” doesn’t just posit that being different is OK, it makes it seem preferable and downright cool. Right now, our world seems decidedly hostile to weirdoes, outcasts, and rebels, and for most thinking Americans, staying comfortably numb isn’t a realistic or viable option. It’s heartening that the twitchy mosaic that is “Legion” comes down hard on the side of the misfits and those who embrace their flaws and passions, rather than on the side of those who ruthlessly suppress what is strange and nameless.
“Why can’t you have what everyone else has?” David’s concerned sister asks at one point. The bracing early episodes of “Legion” ask if what’s inside David’s mind is actually better than that.
For a feature on the origins and making of “Legion,” check out Daniel Holloway’s story on the drama. For a podcast conversation about “Legion,” “Riverdale” and “24: Legacy,” go here.

5 Hip-Hop Songs About Food added to Google Docs
5 Hip-Hop Songs About Food
It might not seem like it, but hip-hop has been a force in music since the mid-to-late 70s now, and a genre that currently holds between 13-15 of the top 20 spots (depending on how you look at it). This is all to say that hip-hop has shifted dramatically from social movement to social norm and one that captivates a particularly wide audience. The genre is incredibly dynamic, moving between uptempo party songs to thoughtful pieces of pop culture ephemera. That makes hip-hop an ideal option for neuromarketing –a marketing technique that engages your senses to motivate your actions– in your restaurant. By playing hip-hop songs about food, you can create a fun, upbeat environment for your guests, while subtly encouraging their hunger for more.
How We Chose Our Hip Hop Songs About Food
Like our list of songs about restaurants, mileage varies on your audience, so the selected songs presented here are PG. That means family-friendly, with little to no allusions to the tropes often associated with the genre. These are both literally and figuratively hip-hop songs about food, set to a beat that demands you nod along, and sure to bring a smile to your guests’ faces.
Beastie Boys – Egg Man
Featuring three of the best emcees that have ever lived, The Beastie Boys made their mark early on as a party rock band, before breaking new ground in hip-hop on albums like Check Your Head or Ill Communication. Egg Man marks an early highpoint for the band, a silly song about pranking suckas by egging them. While this isn’t expressly about eating food, it does expressly bring up eggs in a variety of forms throughout the track, making it an ideal pairing for a commercial about an egg-related special, or just a great entry into a breakfast-themed playlist.
Keep in mind that from a marketing perspective, people often misinterpret songs, sometimes to famously inaccurate degrees. Furthermore, this track maintains a steady 116 beats per minute (BPM) standard throughout, which is the perfect timing for eating. Put this on in the background, maybe on a patio on a nice breezy morning, and set the mood.
Talib Kweli – Eat To Live
By far the most figurative track on this list, rapper Talib Kweli uses “food” as an analogy here about the struggles to stay afloat against the challenges of the world. A member of seminal hip-hop duo Black Star, Kweli is known for his socially conscious lyricism, and jazz-inflected beats. With “Eat To Live,” Kweli offers up a low-key tune ideal for a contemplative date. While the subject matter here is heavy –survival against the odds– the primary message is heavily food-centric. When Kweli rhymes, “We gotta feed the kids, they gotta eat to live,” he’s issuing a relatable statement about always encouraging the best in everyone.
Restaurateurs and restaurant staff alike can relate to that message, given the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic that has left unemployed and with an uncertain future. But Kweli’s thesis with “Eat To Live,” offers a ray of hope for a better tomorrow, that together we can get through this. Play this track during the quieter times of the day.
A Tribe Called Quest – Ham ‘N’ Eggs
With “Ham ‘N’ Eggs,” A Tribe Called Quest served up a PG-rated rap song by one of the greatest hip-hop acts of the Golden Age (and any, for that matter). Rhymed to their traditional jazz-funk inspired beat, Tribe reflects on healthy eating, eschewing ham, and eggs for healthier food choices. Each rapper in the collective connects to their preferred dish, whether that’s splurging on a turkey dog or collard greens and the occasional steak, there is a camaraderie to the group that makes this fun and light-hearted, the perfect accompaniment to a good time.
Drop this beat throughout National Salad Month, and promote options for your diet savvy guests.
The Fat Boys – All You Can Eat
By virtually every measure, it feels irresponsible to leave The Fat Boys out of this mix. A rap trio that made their mark in the ’80s, The Fat Boys tell you who they are in their name. As such, many of their songs are about food or eating, with “All You Can Eat” standing out among their oeuvre. On this song, the trio wax poetic about buffets, and the tactile pleasure of sampling a variety of foods for one convenient price.
While buffets may seem anachronistic as we continue our social distancing efforts into the foreseeable future, this Fat Boys classic will go down as a nostalgic reminder of simpler times, less anxiety-ridden times. The video for this track has an epic history and serves as an early foray into the relationship between hip-hop and food. Likewise, the Fat Boys played the role of cultural ambassadors in the nascent rap scene, by offering up their playful rhymes about the same joy of eating that so many enjoy.
Put this on blast when in-house traffic resumes to brick and mortars to set the expectation that happier, safer times have returned.
McEnroe – Cereal For Dinner
Clever wordplay and turns of phrase are the hallmarks of a quality emcee, and rapper McEnroe displays those qualities in his ode to youthful cravings, “Cereal For Dinner.” By referencing things like Super Mario and The Smiths, McEnroe earns his cred as a nerdcore rapper who isn’t shy about dropping references, all in service to his overall Peter Pan-Esque narrative of vegging out and giving in. The music takes on a Cool Calm Pete vibe, which is as the name implies, both cool and calm.
Picture this song played at a David Chang restaurant, where cereal milk is a common ingredient, or at a “breakfast for dinner” spot. Don’t forget that a lot of Americans prefer breakfast for dinner, so play this if and when you offer specials on night time con huevos.
Conclusion
Hip-hop has a storied history and one that often skirts or directly confronts heavy topics. While that may not seem ideal in a restaurant setting, there are many positives to glean from the genre, from the many references to food or eating, to the imminently danceable beats. Choose your songs to parallel your clientele, as there are so many hip-hop songs about food to pull from, and enliven your guests.
