A Queer retelling of Shakespeare’s Julius Ceasar, Lauren Emily Whalen’s new YArelease Take Her Down has some VERY dark themes, a lot to love, and a little to improve. I absolutely loved all of the representation although I think that at times the book trie too hard to be inclusive. The format, a thesis written in 5 acts (like the play) is different an can be hard but I think it works given the subject matter. There are A LOT of trigger warnings, and I do advise readers check those out before proceeding. Retellings are one of my favorites (outside horror) when done right and this one is done right, down to the play on names. The intro (lost half of the book) is slow and can get repetitive but the rest of the story is very good, there will be characters and situations you will hate, to be spoiler free, I wont say more. I loved Whalen’s previous book, Two Winters and after reading this, she will be an author I will watch for. It’s not a perfect book, but it is a good one. I give this 3.5 of 5 stars and thank @suzyapprovedbooktours and @laurenemilywrites for the review copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. #bookstagram #booktour #suzysapprovedbooktour #coffeedogsbooks #retelling #lgbtqbooks #takeherdown #darkacedemia #triggerwarnung⚠️ #readthisbook #ya #bookblogger https://www.instagram.com/p/CbLT0uIL4Aa/?utm_medium=tumblr

Saints of Swallow Hill by Donna Everhart 📖 This was a great historical fiction novel! Taking place in North Carolina during the great depression, we see the lives of several characters as actions both in and out of their control find them all at the same turpentine camp. We see some horrible actions by the people who oversee the workers who are little more than slaves. Workers were not even paid, the received tokens to pay their rent and purchase food, which left many of them continuously in debt to the camp. The descriptions and character building were very well done. There are some not so easy thing to read but the times weren’t easy. If you are a lover of historical fiction, you will truly enjoy this book. I give it 4 of 5 stars and thank Suzy’s Approved Book Tours for the review copy of this book. My thought and opinions are my own. #suzysapprovedbooktour #coffeedogsbooks #bookblog #bookreviews #bookstagram #blogtour #ipreview via @preview.app https://www.instagram.com/p/CYzqqlCr1g1/?utm_medium=tumblr

No Rules – Sharon Dukett 🎧 This was a great memoir about the author’s life in the late 1960s-70s. Running away from home at 16 she realized the world wasn’t all hippie communes and fun times, although there were some of those. We read about choices made and lessons learned. You experience the early era of feminism through the authors experiences. You see her living in an off the grid commune and travels all over the US and Canada. It’s an engrossing coming of age story and one I recommend. The narrator does a good job reading the story as well. I give this 4.5 of 5 stars and thank @suzyapprovedbooktours and Sharon Dukett for the audio review copy of this book. Freedom Lessons – Audio Review 🎧 Freedom Lessons isn’t an easy book to read. Told from three different points of view in 1969 Louisiana after the town is forced to end segregation, there is a lot of racism, brutality and hatred in this book, but it is a very well told story. Out three main characters, Colleen - a new teacher and the only white person at the school, Frank – a black football player concerned about the death of his father, and Evelyn – a veteran black teacher, all have their own very important view to tell us. The narrator for the audio did a good job with the story although I wish there was a little more emotion in the reading given the material, but I still recommend this format. It was interesting to learn that this is a fictionalized account of the authors experience teaching in Louisiana in the late sixties. I give this 4 of 5 stars and highly recommend! Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours and Eileen Harrison Sanchez for the review copy of this audiobook. This was a great addition and perfect time for a spooky read. A case of demonic possession, a reluctant priest, what more can you ask for? This about more than possession and an exorcism and as we read, we learn more about Father Kerrigan, his past, and why he is so reluctant to perform this ritual. Told from Kerrigan’s POV, we learn through flashbacks about his past and his own demons. This was a very engaging book and a fast read. I recommend this for fans of the supernatural and psychological stories as well. 3.75 of 5 stars! Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours and author Frank Olivia for the review copy of this book. As always my thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. I look forward to more books by this author. #suzysapprovedbooktour #readingismymedicine #coffeedogsbooks #bookblog #bookreviews #bookstagram #blogtour #ipreview via @preview.app https://www.instagram.com/p/CViZ5ogrIZP/?utm_medium=tumblr

This is an emotional read told from the first person POV of Wesley (Wes) Scoot, an autistic teen who has difficulty in communicating with anyone but his Marine father. When his dad is deployed and comes back damaged both in body and mind, Wes no longer has anyone who understand him. His mother is distant and cold, and his father now suffers from PTSD. There are some rough and violent moments and the treatment Wes receives is hard to read at times, but this is a story that should be read and many difficult topics are discussed. I recommend this book and give it 3.75 (rounded to 4) stars out of 5 and thank @suzyapprovedbooktours and author Brad Schaeffer for the review copy of this book. As always, my thoughts and opinions on this story are entirely my own. #suzysapprovedbooktour #readingismymedicine #coffeedogsbooks #bookblog #bookreviews #bookstagram #blogtour #ipreview via @preview.app https://www.instagram.com/p/CU-hBhwLIYn/?utm_medium=tumblr

Two Winters is a modern retelling of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. This is one I have not read so I can't say how comparable the retelling is but this is a great upper YA story. The story is told in two timelines, the first being 1987 when Paulina is 17 and her best friend Mia is pregnant and trying to keep it secret from everyone, including the father, Tesla. Paulina is also in a secret relationship with a school athlete, both are bisexual and not out. The second half of the book takes place in 2014, Perdita is 17, adopted, and really wondering where she came from. We also see some flashbacks in the form of letters from Mia and Tesla. This is an engaging book but does cover some heavy topics such as teen pregnancy, homophobia, and bullying, but it's not so heavy as to be tedious. It's also a story of choices and how they can affect our life and future. I recommend this and give it 3.75 of 5 stars and thank @suzyapprovedbooktours , @laurenemilywrites , and @netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. With or Without You is an emotional journey into the lives of Stella, Simon and Libby. Stella and Simon have been in a long term relationship for decades. Stella is the responsible one, wanting to “grow up” and have children and an adult life. Simon is a musician who wants to make it big and have fun. The night before what is supposed to be Simon’s big break, Stella ends up in a coma and Simon gives up his opportunity to stay with her but when she wakes up, she is not the Stella everyone knew. This a book, ultimately about life and the choices we make, for better or worse. It has deep and intense character development and whether we like them or not, we feel deeply for them. Everyone is flawed and broken and we see how they change over time. It is a very engaging book, you become invested and want to know what is going to happen. This was my first book by Caroline Leavitt but if the rest are like this one, it won’t be my last. I give this 4 of 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and thank @suzyapprovedbooktours , @carolineleavitt and @algonquinbooks for the opportunity to read and review this book. Book Tour & Review: A Girl Called Rumi Ari Honarvar This debut novel releasing Sept 21, is a difficult but beautiful story that I highly recommend. Taking place over multiple timelines between California and Iran this book tells the story of Kimia and her family and what the effects of war have on individuals and families. In addition to seeing Iran post-revolution in the early 1980’s we also see it in the early 2000’s where traumas still exist. We also experience some magical realism when Kimia encounters the Storyteller who uses The Seven Valleys of Love as a basis for her spiritual journey. Seeing Kimia and her family during these two times and how the past has affected them all is a testament to what the horrors of war and its aftermath can do to people and how they try to make peace with the past and heal. I give this 4.5 stars out of 5 and thank @suzyapprovedbooktours and @rumiwithaview for the chance to read and review this book. #suzysapprovedbooktour #readingismypassion #coffeedogsbooks #bookblog #bookreviews #bookstagram #blogtour #ownvoiceauthor #ipreview via @preview.app https://www.instagram.com/p/CUC9xjdL4T4/?utm_medium=tumblr

Buried Beneath is book 3 in the Bishop Security Series, a fun & exciting romantic suspense novel by Debbie Baldwin. New team member Cam, ex-seal & ex-CIA undercover gets drawn back into his old life when he is kidnapped by the Conductor, who wants to eliminate him and any evidence he gathered while undercover. While in his old persona he meets Evan (Evangeline), an archeologist who suspects there is something up with the island’s caves. This is an easy read and you will want to start at the beginning of the series, even though this can be read as a standalone. Be aware, this can get a little steamy! I’m not one for a straight romance (with some exceptions – CoHo), but throw in some suspense and action and I’m right there. This one doesn’t disappoint and I’m looking forward to reading more in this series. I give this 3.75 (rounded to 4) stars out of 5. What’s Not True (What’s Not #2)  Valerie Taylor Happy Release Day!  What’s Not True is book 2 following What’s Not Said. While there is a great deal of recap throughout the book, I really would not consider this a stand along and recommend reading book 1 first (its a good book, go ahead read it).  In What’s Not True, we pick up where things left off with Kassie, Mike, Chris and Karen. Taking place in both Paris and Boston, we see the continuing story of these very interconnected characters (holy family tree!). There’s drama to be had and decisions to be made, just as in book one, and while sometimes the characters and their actions get frustrating, its still a good read. I enjoyed What’s Not Said and jumped at the change to review What’s Not True, and I am glad I did. I give this one a solid 3.75 of 5 stars and recommend both in the series. Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours and @valerieetaylor for the review copy of this book. While this is technically book 2 in the Bishop Security Series, I did not feel lost reading this first, although I will go back and read book one to see what backstory, if any I may have missed with Calliope and Tox. While straight up romance isn’t a preferred genre of mine, I am all for a good romantic suspense. This book is one, and it does get a little spicy for those who aren’t in to “R-rated” stories. It was pretty fast paced and a fun read. I recommend this with 3.5 of 5 stars and thank @suzyapprovedbooktours and @debbiebaldwinbooks for the review copy of this book. The Sound of Wings is a heartfelt story of three damaged women living in the coastal town of Cape May NJ. We meet Goldie, 70, widowed and haunted by her late husband, who is trying to keep her shop alive and takes refuge in her butterfly garden; Jocelyn, a writer, who isn’t able to write due to her overwhelming anxiety about her upcoming custody battle despite a new husband and looming publisher deadlines; and Krystal, small town girl turned millionaires wife, who despises herself. We meet these women and see their stories through alternating chapters, from the viewpoints of the three and the secrets they all hold. We see how their stories, although seemingly unrelated, end up coming together and how they turn from broken women into strong friends and help build each other up. It’s a wonderful story with great character development that would make for a great beach read. I love stories where women come together to make each other stronger despite their differences in age. I recommend this book giving it 3.75 of 5 stars and thank @suzyapprovedbooktours and @suzannesimonettiauthor for the review copy of this book. This one is a heartbreaker readers, even though we know upfront the end result is good, it truly tugs on your heartstrings to read what happened. Valentines Day 2019, Steven Carino stopped to run an errand and let Oliver, his precious dog, in the car. Tw a day I bet he will never forget. Oliver was stolen from his vehicle and missing for seven days. Oliver was Steven’s life. He had no spouse or children and had a very tough time in his younger years. Being a dog owner and lover myself, I was terrified that something bad would happen to him. That he was stolen to use as bait or some other horrible event. Thought the book, Steven not only talks about his search for Olivr and how so many people came together, even complete strangers, he also talks bout his life and how his upbringing “broke” him. It’s not always an easy read so be prepared. There are pages of photos included in the book that helped me connect with the character and his story (putting faces to true story names always helps me connect more, personally). I give this 4 of 5 stars and a box of tissues. Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours and author Steven Carino for the review copy of this book. Release Date: 1/25/22 Publisher:Kensington About The Book: It takes courage to save yourself... In the dense pine forests of North Carolina, turpentiners labor, hacking into tree trunks to draw out the sticky sap that gives the Tar Heel State its nickname, and hauling the resin to stills to be refined. Among them is Rae Lynn Cobb and her husband, Warren, who run a small turpentine farm together. Though the work is hard and often dangerous, Rae Lynn, who spent her childhood in an orphanage, is thankful for it—and for her kind if careless husband. When Warren falls victim to his own negligence, Rae Lynn undertakes a desperate act of mercy. To keep herself from jail, she disguises herself as a man named "Ray" and heads to the only place she can think of that might offer anonymity—a turpentine camp in Georgia named Swallow Hill. Swallow Hill is no easy haven. The camp is isolated and squalid, and commissary owner Otis Riddle takes out his frustrations on his browbeaten wife, Cornelia. Although Rae Lynn works tirelessly, she becomes a target for Crow, the ever-watchful woods rider who checks each laborer’s tally. Delwood Reese, who’s come to Swallow Hill hoping for his own redemption, offers “Ray” a small measure of protection, and is determined to improve their conditions. As Rae Lynn forges a deeper friendship with both Del and Cornelia, she begins to envision a path out of the camp. But she will have to come to terms with her past, with all its pain and beauty, before she can open herself to a new life and seize the chance to begin again.
