Electrolytes for Recovery – Recovery Lab
Electrolytes For Muscle Recovery – In partnership with Recovery Lab
As we know, electrolytes allow us to get more out of our daily hydration. And when it comes to physical exertion, whether as a result of a vigorous training plan or just general daily life, electrolytes provide us with the necessary fuel to power through.
But beyond simply supporting our bodies through day-to-day activities, electrolytes are also a crucial element for muscle recovery. If you’re an active person, you’ll already know the importance of recovery for your body. And with more and more recovery-oriented clinics popping up around Australia, it’s clear that the general demand for and knowledge of recovery is only increasing with time.
Why is it important to replenish your electrolytes during recovery.
During the recovery period after any kind of physical strain (whether it be after a heavy workout or bouncing back from illness), the body works to subconsciously repair the muscle tissue that was broken down during exertion. However, the rate of this recovery is largely determined by the supply of electrolytes in the body.
For instance, if the body is experiencing vitamin and electrolyte deficiency during and/or post exertion, the body is more likely to develop exercise-associated muscle cramps (EAMC) and other conditions. A simple way to avoid this is by replenishing the lost electrolytes after physical exertion. Not only will this prevent post exercise soreness, but keeping a good fluid and electrolyte balance will also encourage a faster and more effective recovery.
So, do electrolytes speed up recovery?
Many studies have proven that increased water consumption after a bout of exercise or after an injury can help speed up the rate of recovery. This is because of the electrolytes found in water that travel throughout our body to tend to the affected muscle groups. As a result, the use of electrolyte supplements for muscle recovery have a great effect on the rate in which this recovery is achieved.
Further research has also shown that incorporating vitamin and electrolyte supplements into your recovery routine can reduce the onset of aforementioned post-exercise muscle cramps and spasms, mental confusion, as well as general fatigue. That’s part of the reason why the team at Recovery Lab have partnered with us to provide Vitadrop in all of their recovery clinics across Australia.
Electrolyte supplements go hand in hand with mechanical modalities for muscle recovery such as those on offer at Recovery Lab. Merging the two during recovery gives the body the benefits of both internal and external recovery methods to rebuild muscle tissue faster and mitigate any possibility of muscle soreness post-exercise and daily exertion.
In order to perform at our best, both in bouts of vigorous exercise and in ordinary life, it’s essential to keep up an effective recovery routine. Check out the modalities on offer at a Recovery Lab near you and make the move to maximise your daily recovery.

The Swiss Cheese Theory of Copper Homeostasis
In my essay on Herpes and the New Homo, I elaborated on the idea that the somatic nervous system (the part that you can control) is autonomically involved in the balancing of copper in your body, a process that scientists refer to as homeostasis. Earlier I posted an illustration of how this relates to the liver's function of maintaining copper levels in your blood. I suggested that the liver, not being connected to the somatic nervous system, does not directly participate in its process, and therefore has little awareness of shortages that may occur in the nervous system when the body faces increased demand for copper in areas other than the gut, such as when infection occurs, or the skin is exposed to excessive solar radiation, or when too much critical thinking is occurring. I must emphasize here again that there exists a vast array of proteins in various organs of the human body that rely on copper for their function.
Based on my experience and understanding, it seems that there is not one integrated system for promoting copper homeostasis in the human body, but rather that there are two distinct systems, one governed by the liver and a supplementary one governed by the nervous system. Because the system governed by the liver has primacy, once the level of ceruloplasmin and other copper-containing proteins in the blood reaches a certain level, and the metabolic needs of the gut have been met, the liver is designed to dispense with the excess supply, even when critical shortages are being experienced elsewhere. This limitation may be based on the fact that your body prefers copper to be chaperoned, as the presence of free copper has a deleterious effect.
As I have limited expertise in either biochemistry or human physiology and no access to a laboratory nor funding, I must rely on the established literature for any speculation as to how copper stored in nervous and muscle tissue is being made available. As far as the needs of an immune response are concerned, lymphocytes and phagocytes, specialized or not, may directly scavenge for copper from glial cells as a matter of course. But this is likely to account only for a small percentage of activity. It may be that histamine levels provoke a cascade of neuronal activity that directly induces neighboring tissue to release copper into extracellular fluid. It is difficult for me to speculate on any exact mechanism.
I can only provide observations from my own experience. As I have noted, I believe the tingling associated with the outbreak of herpes is coincidental to the activity of the virus. The tingling arises independently of it even though it may trigger its activity. My first sign of genital infection was one single tiny red bump in the summer of 2011, but was notable as it was associated with what may have been a mild outbreak of herpes zoster. Contrary to standard expectations, the next outbreak was radically more severe and occurred during a week long stay with my mother's parents, who it must be noted, loved to see me well fed. Herpetic outbreaks consistently varied according to a change of locale and a change in diet. In general, they were less frequent or severe when eating my mother's diet, or the diet favored by my model when the two of us were on the road; they were more frequent or severe when preparing my own food, and they were at their worst when eating the food prepared by my mother's parents.
In the summer of 2013, I experienced an epileptic seizure during orgasm. This was a culminating moment during a period of intense mental and physical activity involving weight lifting and the fine motor movements associated with the manipulation of a computer mouse. After many hours of intense concentration, I would develop jerks in my forearm that mimicked the motions I was using to control the mouse. These would be mirrored in my legs. After weight lifting, there were occasionally tremors in my biceps and an inability to properly grasp objects. The seizure occasioned my first consultation with a physician. I suspected a mineral imbalance or deficiency, but was reassured that I did not have one, and that my suspicion that I was low on electrolytes was undermined by the very low quantities necessary for health.
A period of bedrest followed during which dystonia and cramping of the hands and feet were a regular feature. With continued bedrest, these subsided over the course of the fall. Regular physical activity was not resumed until the winter of the following year, at which point, my diet again became high in protein. Gastrointestinal inflammation had become chronic by this point. I tested negative for Helicobacter pylori.
In the spring of 2014, I developed a perpetual fasciculation in my left eyelid that no amount of bedrest would resolve. This distressing situation lasted for weeks and did not end until I partially removed wheat from my diet. Later that spring and into summer, sustained positioning, either when seated, as when driving, or standing, as when partaking in a religious ceremony, would provoke intense head to toe electrical currents. Occasional dystonia of a finger was a feature of this period. During the summer, hypnic jerks became progressively more pronounced, ranging from day to day, but generally increasing from a mere twitch of the finger to more violent motions of the hand and arm. My body also had a growing inability to suppress sensory-induced reflex action. When at rest, observing sudden violent movements on a screen would cause the muscles of my groin to involuntarily contract, as if to promote readiness. The amount of suddenness or violence needed to provoke the reaction became markedly small, such that any observed movement that suggested more movement was capable of producing an associated reflex. I could observe a man walking up to a ball and by the time he had drawn his leg back to kick it, my muscles were jerking as if I were trying to kick the ball.
Late in the summer, when my levels of histamine were at their highest, a hypnic jerk had become a violent contraction of multiple muscle groups, mostly arrayed along a diagonal line from one shoulder to the opposite hip and including the opposite leg. When insomnia and priapism became a feature, and subsequently, when treating myself with diamine oxidase supplements and antihistamines, the violence of the jerks subsided and were, for a matter of weeks, replaced with a perpetual rotating twitch centered around the torso. A twitch would arise, for example, in the left buttock and continue for a matter of minutes, only to subside and be immediately replaced by a twitch elsewhere, say, in the opposite shoulder or quadricep. This rotating twitch would last hours.
As I have mentioned previously, my EEG results suggested that I was the gold standard of neurology. I had no muscle weakness. Due to the transient nature of my jerkiness, the neurologist could only suggest that I be connected for a matter of days to a portable version of the EEG equipment. I declined. I did not think the data would be helpful enough to justify the trouble. It was while waiting for multiple MRI results that I started noticing the tingling. It was similar to the tingle associated with an outbreak of herpes, except it was in the tip of my nose, and then in the small of my back. It was similar to the sensation caused by the end of a loose hair. The area encompassed by the transient tingling grew, over the course of several weeks, first to the size of a cherry, and then to a golf ball. It would manifest itself while I was cooking, an activity that involved lifting heavy pots and pans with both hands. There would be tingling in the shoulders as well. Eventually the area of tingling was the size of a grapefruit. It started occurring more frequently and at its center was a sensation of numbness that was permanent. Overcoming my fear of copper toxicity, I began supplementation.
Progress was immediate. I maximized my dose to 12 mg a day, spread out as evenly as possible. After less than two weeks, the entire sensation had disappeared. I have not stopped supplementing since. After four years, fasciculation seldom occurs and is always short-lived. The same is true for twitches. Hypnic jerks may occur but only after notable exertion, and particularly if preceded by a period of rest. Herpetic outbreaks are mild and always associated with a degree of gastrointestinal upset and changes to the composition of bowel movements. Tingling in the back sometimes occurs, but is always associated with inflammation of the lungs, as for example after inhaling a notable amount of particulate matter in the course of gardening or forest management.
One notable type of twitch first began occurring regularly in the fall of 2016. It is a rhythmic twitch of the muscles of one side of the upper lip and the respective cheek. Often it is preceded by mild tingling in the same area, which may precede the twitch or the first in a series of twitches by a matter of seconds, minutes, hours, or days. The twitch itself is almost always marked by a single long contraction that may last a few seconds, followed by a series of very quick contractions. This twitch is always associated with subsequent inflammation of the nose, mouth, ear, and sinuses, and the length, severity or number of twitches is always positively associated with the degree of inflammation. The twitch was first limited to one side of the face, and then, after about a year or so, is now limited to the other side.
I would note here as well that around the climax of nervous symptoms, semen production was nonexistent, having steadily declined over the preceding months and less sharply so over the preceding years. After supplementation began, semen production reached levels associated in my memory with late adolescence and young adulthood. It was also around that age, during my college years, that I first noticed a phenomenon that only occurred while resting in a supine position or on my side with my eyes closed after a period of intense mental activity. It was a sudden warm feeling that would bloom in my head. It was pleasant, and if any amount of headache had occasioned me to lie down, it would subside in the wake of this flush feeling. Most curiously, this phenomenon was most often triggered by the faint sound of people conversing in another room. This is something similar to what has been identified as autonomous sensory meridian response. This phenomenon was not characterized by emotion, but I often observed a similar euphoric wave being triggered by a social occasion or a strong memory. In any case, at a certain point, this phenomenon grew more and more rare until it finally disappeared, only to reappear after a couple years of supplementation.
One more thing I would note is that throughout my nervous decline and recovery, it was always apparent that prolonged physical activity would exacerbate my symptoms less than mental activity. Let us assume that the diet I shared with my mother's parents is a major risk factor for the development of chronic illness. In my grandmother, with whom I believe I share a genetic predisposition to low diamine oxidase production, the illness manifested itself most readily as Parkinson's in advanced age, a disease in which the role of disruption to copper homeostasis is no longer under dispute, and which, indeed as I have mentioned, is already being treated by molecules that selectively deliver copper to the central nervous system. In my grandfather, it manifested itself as diabetes in late middle age, a disease in which the role of copper is actively being studied. In me, with my lifelong histamine problem and my intense intellectual activity, the disease became acute early in my third decade. My additional exposure to metal-sequestrating herbicides is likely a factor in this accelerated pace.
My experience paints the picture of a radically dynamic system in which genetics and environment play a huge role. The manifestations of marginal copper deficiency can evolve over time and change significantly within a single individual over the course of its progression. I would note anecdotally that my sister, in her early twenties at the time, and being familiar but skeptical concerning my theories, once reported to me that a fasciculation had been induced in her eyelid shortly after ingesting a large amount of conventionally grown wheat bread, and that this coincidence had made a large impression upon her.
It is as if the nervous system were a giant block of Swiss cheese, in which the holes are constantly moving. An urgent need for copper in one place, even the gut, can be filled at the expense of a small and distant part of the nervous system. As the level of copper in the blood is meticulously maintained, this small deficiency can be expected eventually to be replenished. But as marginal deficiencies continue over time, these small holes become larger, and slower to heal. I have focused on food as a risk factor, and on histamine as a confounding agent, as these two elements have marked my own experience. In others, completely different factors may be at play. Copper is essential in the production and maintenance of dopamine. From what I understand, there is no reason why marginal copper deficiency should not be a significant factor in the development of clinical depression. My own father once sought treatment for this.
The chaos of our current culture is immense, and chronic illness is only one of the many problems we face. I suspect that because copper is so basic to so many of our biochemical processes, because the pathway to marginal deficiency is so readily embarked upon, and because its existence is so hidden, we will only be able to address the issue collectively once we enjoy a complete understanding of the dynamics at play. In the meantime, our great collective suffering will continue unabated. Indeed, I fear it will only accelerate.

Body Odor and Excessive Sweating Treatment
Tumblr media
Body BODY ODOR AND EXCESSIVE SWEATING TREATMENT PLAY VIDEO The condition can be known medically as bromhidrosis, apocrine bromhidrosis, osmidrosis, ozochrotia, fetid sweat, body smell, or malodorous sweating. Body odor is the perceived unpleasant smell our bodies can give off when bacteria that live on the skin break down sweat into acids. Body odor can have a pleasant and specific smell to the individual and can be used to identify people, especially by dogs and other animals. Diet, gender, health, and medication can influence each person’s unique body odor. Osmidrosis or bromhidrosis is defined by a foul odor due to a water-rich environment that supports bacteria, which is caused by an abnormal increase in perspiration (hyperhidrosis). This can be particularly strong when it happens in the axillary region (underarms). In this case, the condition may be referred to as axillary osmidrosis. Humans have two types of sweat glands; eccrine sweat glands,  and apocrine sweat glands. Eccrine sweat glands are present from birth, while the apocrine glands become activated during puberty.  The body odor is primarily the result of the apocrine sweat glands, which secrete the majority of chemical compounds needed for the skin flora to metabolize it into odorant substances. This happens mostly in the axillary (armpit) region, although the gland can also be found in the areola, anogenital area, and around the navel. The genital and armpit areas also contain light hairs that help diffuse body odors. Body odor is most likely to occur in the following places: feet, groin, armpits, genitalia, pubic hair and other hair, belly button, anus, behind the ears, and the rest of the skin, to a lesser extent. What are the Causes of Body Odor? Body odor is caused by bacteria breaking down sweat and is mostly linked to the apocrine glands. These glands are found in the breasts, genital area, eyelids, armpits, and ear. They are scent glands. Most of the apocrine glands in the skin are located in the groin, armpits, and around the nipples. Body odor is influenced by the actions of the skin flora, including members of Corynebacterium, which manufacture enzymes called lipases that break down the lipids in sweat to create smaller molecules like butyric acid. More significant bacteria populations of Corynebacterium jeikeium are for example found more in the armpits of men whereas higher population numbers of Staphylococcus haemolyticus are located in the armpits of women. This causes male armpits to give off a rancid/cheese-like smell whereas female armpits give off a more fruity/onion-like smell. Staphylococcus hominis is also known for producing thioalcohol compounds that contribute to odors. These smaller molecules smell and give body odor its characteristic aroma. Propionic acid (propanoic acid) is present in many sweat samples. This acid is a breakdown product of some amino acids by propionibacteria, which thrive in the ducts of adolescent and adult sebaceous glands. Because propionic acid is chemically similar to acetic acid with similar characteristics including odor, body odors may be identified as having a vinegar-like smell by certain people. What is Excessive Sweating (hyperhidrosis) The word “hyperhidrosis” means too much (hyper) sweating (hidrosis).  Excessive sweating happens when a person sweats more than is necessary. Yes, it’s essential to sweat. Sweating cools the body, which prevents us from overheating — people who have hyperhidrosis, however, sweat when the body does not need cooling. Many people who have hyperhidrosis sweat from one or two areas of the body. Most often, they sweat from their palms, feet, underarms, or head. While the rest of the body remains dry, one or two areas may drip with sweat. This excessive sweating can interfere with everyday activities. If you have this medical condition, you may notice: - Visible sweating: When you are not exerting yourself, do you often see beads of sweat on your skin or have sweat-soaked clothing? Do you sweat when you’re sitting? - Sweating interferes with everyday activities: Does sweating cause difficulty holding a pen, walking, or turning a doorknob? Does sweat drip slowly onto your papers or computer? - The skin turns soft, white, and peels in specific areas: Does your skin stay wet for long periods? - Skin infections: Do you get frequent skin infections on the parts of your body that sweat heavily? The athlete’s foot and jock itch are common skin infections. What are the Types of  Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)? Primary Excessive Sweating (hyperhidrosis) In one or a few areas of the body: “Focal” means that excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) affects one or a few parts of the body. The areas of the body most affected are the underarms, hands and/or feet, and forehead. - On both sides of the body: If excessive sweating occurs in the underarms, the person usually notices both underarms sweat excessively. The same holds true for the hands and feet. - After waking up: Sweating may begin soon after the person wakes up, but the person usually does not notice damp sheets or wet clothing unless the room is hot. - At least once a week: For many people, it occurs much more often. This type of hyperhidrosis usually begins when the person is a child or adolescent. Most people who have this type are otherwise healthy. In medical terminology, the word “primary” means that the cause is not another medical condition. The exact cause of primary hyperhidrosis is not known. Even though stress and anxiety can trigger episodes of sweating, primary hyperhidrosis is not classified as being a mental condition. Some recent studies point to a genetic basis, as it appears to run in members of the same family. Secondary Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis) In medical terminology, “secondary” means that excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) has an underlying cause. The cause could be a: medical condition, a side effect of taking medicine or food supplement. Medical conditions that can cause excessive sweating include diabetes, frostbite, gout, Injury (such as head trauma caused by accident), menopause, obesity, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), or tumor. If a person has this type of hyperhidrosis, the person may notice: - The entire body sweats excessively: Sometimes, only parts of the body sweat. - Sweating occurs during sleeping: If you sweat excessively while asleep, it is crucial to see a dermatologist learn why this happens. This type of sweating usually begins when the person is an adult. It also may start after an accident or frostbite. Many medicines also can cause this type of hyperhidrosis.  Both kinds of hyperhidrosis can cause people to feel extremely anxious and embarrassed. Students often avoid raising their hands during class. Many teens never date. Adults may hide the sweat stains by wearing layers of clothing or frequently changing throughout the day. Who gets Body Odor and Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)? Dermatologists estimate that 3% of people in the United States have excessive sweating. People of all races get hyperhidrosis. Excessive sweating can begin at any age. Researchers have learned that most people have one of the following: - Have a family member who sweats excessively. - Have a Medical condition that causes the sweating - They are taking a medicine or food supplement which can cause excessive sweating. - People who sweat too much, such as those with hyperhidrosis, may also be susceptible to body odor How do dermatologists diagnose Excessive Sweating? To diagnose this condition, a dermatologist gives the patient a physical exam. This includes looking closely at the areas of the body that sweat excessively. A dermatologist also asks questions. This helps the doctor understand why the patient has excessive sweating. Sometimes medical testing is necessary. Some patients require a test called the sweat test. This involves coating some of their skin with a powder that turns purple when the skin gets wet. More medical tests are needed to discover an underlying medical condition. What Are My Treatment Options for Body Odor and Excessive Sweating? Antiperspirants This may be the first treatment that a dermatologist recommends. It is affordable. When applied as directed, an antiperspirant can be useful. Your dermatologist may recommend a regular or clinical-strength antiperspirant. Some patients need a stronger antiperspirant and receive a prescription for one. The antiperspirant sits on top of your skin. As you sweat, the antiperspirant is pulled into your sweat glands. This plugs the sweat glands. When your body senses that its sweat glands are occluded, this should signal your body to stop producing so much sweat. Iontophoresis (the no-sweat machine) If excessive sweating affects your hands, feet, or both areas, this may be an option. You will use this treatment at home. It requires you to immerse your hands or feet in a shallow pan of tap water. As you do this, a medical device sends a low-voltage current through the water.  The electric current shuts down the treated sweat glands temporarily. Most people need about 6 to 10 treatments to shut down the sweat glands. At first, you may need 2 or 3 treatments per week. A treatment session usually takes 20 to 40 minutes.  Once you see results, you can repeat the therapy as necessary to maintain results. This can range from once a week to once a month. If this treatment is right for you, your dermatologist will teach you how to use the device and give you a prescription so that you can buy one. Prescription medicine Some patients receive a prescription for a drug that temporarily prevents them from sweating. These medicines work throughout the body.  These medicines prevent the sweat glands from working. Athletes, people who work in a hot place, and anyone who lives in a warm climate should use extreme caution when using this treatment. The body may not be able to cool itself. Botox Injections Botox is approved for the treatment of hyperhidrosis in the United States. It is injected intradermally to treat hyperhidrosis and inhibits the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction and from the sympathetic nerves that innervate eccrine sweat glands.  Your dermatologist can inject a weak form of this medicine into your underarms. To treat excessive sweating, a patient will need to have very tiny amounts injected in many areas of the underarms. When performed correctly, patients have little pain or discomfort. Findings suggest that this treatment may be useful for other areas of the body. It may help post-menopausal women who sweat excessively on the head. It may be helpful for excessive sweating that affects the hands and feet. Fractional Radiofrequency Proudly at MSI, a newer bipolar RF device are effective in reducing the amount of sweating. New bipolar RF devices can destroy the eccrine glands by the process of thermolysis at the interface of the deep dermis and subcutis while minimizing damage to the surrounding tissue.  Fractional radiofrequency treatment appears to be a new safe and effective treatment alternative for moderate to severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Prof Moawad suggests It is repeated sessions of FR be considered to achieve a complete response. Microwave Device (miraDry) The mechanism of action of the procedure causes non-invasive focused heating of the tissue at a depth of the sweat glands with the resulting thermolysis of the sweat glands. In the same way, fractional radiofrequency exert its effect. However, it cannot be used to treat excessive sweating in other areas such as hands or feet because the procedure has been optimized to consider the physical attributes of the underarms. Surgical Treatment A surgical operation is an option for people who have not been helped much by other treatments, or if other therapies cause unacceptable side effects or problems. Surgical ablation of eccrine glands is the only possible way to eliminate or reduce axillary osmidrosis and hyperhidrosis permanently. Local surgical treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis can be divided into three broad categories: - excision of subcutaneous glandular tissue only without skin removal. - excision of skin with its glandular tissue attached; and - selective sweat gland ablation using superficial, ultrasonic liposuction, laser liposuction, radiofrequency liposuction, or microwave sweat gland ablation. Liposuction should be combined with another technique to scrape the sweat glands from the underside of the skin through a small hole cut in the skin. This combination gives excellent results with less risk of complications. Power-assisted Liposuction All types of energy have been combined with liposuction to improve patient experience and results. The “power” in power-assisted/power-tumescent liposuction refers to the use of a small mechanical tube (cannula) that efficiently removes fatty tissue. The mechanical vibrations produced by the power unit are soothing and may decrease procedure time. Powered liposuction can increase fat extraction by 30% or more over non-powered liposuction. Patients love the vibration sensation of powered liposuction or traditional non-powered liposuction. Prof. Moawad was the first to use this technique in the Middle East 10 years ago. In power-assisted liposuction, a cannula with a back-and-forth motion of the tip passes through tissue to suction out fat and fibrous or scarred tissue with reduced effort. Ultrasound Power-Assisted Tumescent Liposuction with Curettage The use of external ultrasound prior to liposuction is a technique that requires the transcutaneous application of high-frequency ultrasonic fields delivered into wetted tissue, followed by traditional aspirates liposuction, with the goal of improving the mechanical removal of sweat glands. Ultrasound causes tissue destruction via three mechanisms: (1) cavitation, (2) micromechanical disruption, and (3) thermal damage. Reports on ultrasound suggest that the disruptive biologic effects of external ultrasound are due to a micromechanical outage or tissue heating. Other stories postulate that external UAL loosens adipose cell attachments, facilitating aspiration. It seems that the manifestations of the effects of external ultrasound appear to be directly proportional to the intensity delivered, with simple cellular detachment at 1 MHz to complete adipose cellular destruction at 2-3 MHz. Recently, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) was used to treat and ablate subcutaneous adipose tissue prior to abdominoplasty cases with histologically proven success. This represents a new potential use for external ultrasound technology as a pretreatment regimen for ablating and remodeling subcutaneous deposits In a novel approach, Prof Moawad uses the above mention technologies to ensure gentle and complete removal of sweat glands. The patients were placed in a supine position with the arms abducted 90%. A starch-iodine test is done, and photos of the results are taken. The hair-bearing area of bilateral axillae was marked and infiltrated with a 200 to 300mL of a tumescent solution consisting of 1,000mL of normal saline, 1mL of 1:1,000 epinephrine, 500mg of 2% lidocaine, 15mL of 8.4% sodium bicarbonate, and 1mL of 10 mg/mL triamcinolone using an infiltrating pump. Two or three tiny stab incisions (3mm-4mm) were made at the anterior and distal border of each axilla, a special cannula attached to the power machine was inserted through them, and subcutaneous tunnels were made by it. By placing the cannula in subcutaneous tunnels with its three holes turned upward to face the sub-dermis, a back-and-forth vibrating movement is performed in a crisscross pattern and aided by the other hand to compress the skin for effective subdermal scraping. The role of vacuum and vibration (mechanical) is to eliminate possible remaining sweat glands functionally and helps in achieving excellent results.  At the end of suction and curettage, the skin pinched up quickly like a piece of cloth. The procedure in one axilla took about 15 to 20 minutes. The stab incisions are closed with Steri-Strips. Bulky compressive dressings are applied to bilateral axillae and kept for 24-48 hours. Afterward, the patient comes back to MSI to remove the bandage and wear his compression garment for the next 2 weeks. However, patients recovered their daily activities within 3–7 days.

Gardening has a power that is political and even democratic. And it is a political power that can be applied constantly, whereas one can only vote or demonstrate occasionally.
—Wendell Berry
Because of disputes over land, access to green space, and equal rights to the city, urban gardens have become a symbol of community activism and empowerment, and they are part of a contemporary grassroots movement supporting environmental justice, collective action, and equitable access to nutrition and good health. Due in part to the current swell of interest in the local food movement, since the early 2000s there has been a remarkable surge in the prevalence of community garden initiatives.
Idea To Life: Community Through Food Pyramid
But while they may be in the current media spotlight, the practice is certainly not new.
Community gardens have been part of American cities since the late-19th century. As a way to confront the congestion, economic instability, and environmental degradation that were part and parcel of turn-of-the-century urban life, residents began taking matters into their own hands—by planting school gardens, for example, or cultivating the vacant lots between buildings.
Since then, the popularity of these gardens has seen ebbs and flows in relation to the social and economic climates of particular eras. During the World Wars and the Great Depression, for example, the practice became much more widespread (as a result of the “Victory Gardens” encouraged by the federal government during WWII, Americans produced 40% of their own food!) only to diminish once again as the nation’s devastated economy began to recover. The 1970s witnessed another economic crisis that made its mark on urban cores. As soaring food prices coincided with the birth of the modern environmental movementand the availability of open spaces as a result of failed urban renewal projects, community gardens began to reemerge as part of a movement to reclaim ownership of the “public commons.” Most recently, after the 2009 recession, there was a 19% increase in the prevalence of community gardens as a strategy for supplementing food costs and cultivating local resilience.
While their ability to improve food access alone, especially among lower-income and under-served communities, is proof enough of their enduring value, community gardens are—and have always been—about much more than food. Indeed, they embody powerful placemaking strategies that are showing to have multiple and measurable impacts.
Here are some of the many interrelated benefits that that these collectively held (and sometimescontested) spaces can bring to urban neighborhoods:
Physical and mental health
Tumblr media
Idea To Life: Community Through Food Stamps
Across many fields and disciplines, researchers are finally beginning to see the powerful connections between social capital and healthy places. Given the physical exertion that gardening requires and the increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, the connection between community gardens and physical health is clear. But recent research is has also underscored the links between community gardens and mental health. For city dwellers, connecting with nature—a proven remedy for stress and depression—can be quite difficult. A recent UK study shows that people who gardened for at least 30 minutes a week had lower body mass indexes (BMIs) as well as higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of tension and stress. “With an increasing number of people residing in urban areas, a decline in the number of homes with gardens, and the increased risk for mental ill health associated with urban living,” researchers write, “allotment gardening might play an important role in promoting mental well-being in people residing in urban areas.”
Educational opportunities and community partnerships
The educational programming that takes place at many community gardens can give neighbors the opportunity to learn about everything from nutrition and culinary skills to environmental sustainability, business principles, and job skills. The Sustainable Flatbush Healing Herb Garden, for example, holds hands-on demonstrations to highlight basic urban agricultural techniques, and it offers community workshops on using herbs in culinary practice and as medicine. As detailed on the garden's ioby funding page, the project sought to provide volunteer and internship opportunities, while also pursuing partnerships with community members, neighborhood schools, and social service organizations.
Land for community gardens can be publicly or privately held, and the programs often involve partnerships with outside entities such as nonprofits, youth or senior programs, prisons, housing developments, or schools. The national farm-to-school network is a large-scale model of how gardening can be an educational tool, an economic catalyst, and a vehicle for strong public-private partnerships. There are farm-to-school programs in every state, where the fruits and vegetables grown on school grounds supplement meals served in the cafeteria.
Safety and crime reduction
There is evidence linking community gardens to improved safety in neighborhoods – showing that crime decreases in neighborhoods as the amount of green space increases. Two reports in the Journal of Environment and Behavior studied (1) the impact nature has on mental fatigue (often a precursor of aggression and violence), and (2) the relationship between green space and inner city crime rates. The research determined that aggression and violence was “significantly lower among those people who lived near some green space than those who lived in more barren conditions.”
Echoing Jane Jacob’s now-famous idea of “eyes on the street,” a 2012 study in Philadelphia comparing two clusters of vacant lots—one that was cultivated and one that wasn’t—showed that greening the vacant lots made nearby residents feel significantly safer, and the newly cultivated lots could be linked to a decrease in gun crimes in the area.
'Our theory is that transforming vacant lots from a space overgrown with vegetation and filled with trash to a clean and green space may make it difficult for people to hide illegal guns and conduct other illegal activities such as drug use in or near the space. Additionally, green space may encourage community cohesion.' – Eugenia C. Garvin, MD, lead author of Penn Study on greening vacant lots to reduce violent crime
Cultural Heritage and Exchange
Shared gardens have played a powerful role in helping communities who have experienced the traumas of displacement, such as new immigrants and refugees. For these populations, shared gardens can be a vehicle for re-establishing a sense of place, building new social ties, and celebrating and maintaining cultural traditions. Little Haiti Garden in Miami, for example, enables the area’s Haitian community to use traditional farming techniques in producing often-unavailable crops such as callaloo and calabaza. Community gardens like Little Haiti Garden, which is located in one of the poorest districts in the country, also maintain a strong economic development component. By holding gardening and nutrition workshops, teaching retail skills, and selling produce to the neighborhood, local markets, and restaurants, the garden helps brings additional money and food into the households that need it.
In Fresno, California, seven state-funded community gardens seek to boost mental health within the area's large refugee, immigrant, and low-income populations. “The thinking of community leaders and health professionals,” writes Patricia Leigh Brown of the New York Times, “is that gardens can help foster resiliency and a sense of purpose for refugees, especially older ones, who are often isolated by language and poverty and experiencing depression and post-traumatic stress. Immigrant families often struggle to meet insurance co-payments, and culturally attuned therapists are in short supply.”
***
Wendell Berry once quipped that it may be too easy to underestimate the power of a garden. 'A garden,' he continued, 'is a solution that leads to other solutions. It is part of the limitless pattern of good health and good sense.'
Since their origin in US cities at the end of the 19th century, the popularity of community gardens has tended to increase during periods of crisis. And as we face new challenges such as the rising rates of chronic health issues like obesity, heart disease, and depression, along with socioeconomic issues like high unemployment rates and increasing food insecurity, it makes sense that community garden initiatives are experiencing a nationwide resurgence.
Even beyond issues of food access, community gardens are about building social ties, sharing skills and experience, learning about nature and culture, and taking proactive measures to improve our physical and mental well-being. One thing is certain: As our urban environments become home to more and more people, community gardens will continue to be a powerful, place-based tool for creating local connections and enacting positive global change.

A Basic Guide To Prepare For A Healthy Pregnancy
Tumblr media
The millennial moms or mom-to-be are super conscious and well-informed about their choices and health!&;
Yet, "trying to conceive" or "being pregnant" builds anxiety and raises millions of questions in the mind of every woman. If you are trying to conceive and wish to bring a healthy baby into this world, we would love to share a few things that can help to thrive through this blissful phase.
Some basic lifestyle and health-related changes are required to assist the mother's body to home a miracle inside her! Your diet, physical and mental strength increases the chances of healthier pregnancy.
TIME FRAME TO ADOPT CHANGES
The time to get pregnant is always right. However, You will not lose anything by making the changes to your lifestyle as early as possible. You can get pregnant on the first try, or it might take some time, but would you want to take a chance when it comes to your baby's health? To be on the safer side, if your are normally active, introducing healthy beginnings into your routine should start atleast six months before you plan to conceive.
1.READJUST THE MEDICINE CABINET
Tumblr media
Getting yourself into the right mind frame for starting a family is the first step towards preparing for this ecstatic phase. The next step, to begin with, is ditching your oral contraceptives, as it is deemed to take 2-3 menstrual cycles to get back to ready-to-conceive uterus health. Alongside, you need to commence decluttering your medicine cabinet after consulting with your healthcare provider for any changes to be made in your current medication. It is prudent to not take any medication on your own during the trying-to-conceive period to avoid any side effects hampering your fertility.
As per the healthcare experts, "During the trying-to-conceive period, any form of unprescribed allopathy, homoeopathy or Ayurvedic medication is risky because you might not know that you are already pregnant until it's already past 5-6 weeks. To avoid any pernicious complications, refraining from unprescribed medication is better than jeopardizing the mother's and the baby's health."
2.HEALTHY START
Tumblr media
Considering the stressful and exhausting lifestyle in today's world, there are slight chances of keeping up with apt nutrition requirements and a health-managing routine. But once you are ready to extend your family, your good health will be the most valuable asset. Not just through the pregnancy, but after delivery taking care of the little one will need all the physical strength and grit. Appropriate iron levels, active/sedentary lifestyle, work and family stress, immunization, BMI range, thyroid levels, diabetes and many factors contribute towards fertility and conceiving. These factors may not compulsorily affect the fetus’s fertility or health, but prominently contribute towards keeping your health in check and making you ready with the strength required for the miracle of birth and the postpartum period.
Identifying these markers before pregnancy can balance any deficiencies or issues on time rather than administering any treatments during pregnancy.
The baby will exert pressure on your overall body frame, and you need to be in the best possible health to manage the changes your body will go through. Exercise regularly, in a way that suits your body and schedule, cut down the sedentary lifestyle. Discuss the intensity of workouts with your healthcare provider and improvise.
3.CURBING THE VICES
Tumblr media
Unhealthy habits are the first thing to give up. Even if you are a rare smoker or drink occasionally, it is a big no-no. It is a perfect opportunity to toss away those vices by the expectant mother and the people around her. It is advised to stop smoking and drinking for atleast a year to six months before trying for your body to heal from the damage that it has already caused.
It will prevent from passing on the effects and the passive harm onto the baby as the counter-effects are directly related to deficiencies, abnormalities and birth complications. There are no studies to confirm what amount of alcohol or smoking is safe, therefore, avoiding it altogether is the best bet. As already discussedd
4.PRENATAL/PRE-CONCEIVING SUPPLEMENTS
Tumblr media
The generic idea is to get an assessment done from your gynaecologist before conceiving so that you may know the exact course of action. The gynaecologist might suggest few tests to check some basic parameters and suggest the medication. The Folic Acid and multivitamin supplements are the first to be initiated in all cases. As folic acid levels for pregnancy are difficult to attain through a usual diet, it is supplemented by over the counter (OTC) meds. Appropriate folic acid levels help to provide maximum protection against neural tube defects.
Rohini is a working mother of a four YO boy and an active PinkNBlu member parent who shared her experience with us. "We were planning to try to conceive from May 2018. When I got sick in January 2018, my doctor suggested some tests and found my haemoglobin level was low, and prescribed a three-month medication for iron, which had a folic acid component also. By May, my iron levels were up, and I got pregnant in June. My gynaecologist told us that getting the right iron and folic supplements was a wise choice before conceiving and ensured that my pregnancy is healthy. I was lucky to know my deficiency beforehand, I suggest all preparing-to-be-mothers should get a checkup done and leave nothing to chance".
5.KNOW WHAT YOU EAT
Tumblr media
Like any machine, your body is fueled by food. Fooding habits play an active role while conceiving, during pregnancy and post-delivery recovery. Following a healthy diet involves cutting down on excess junk food, caffeinated beverages, deep-fried food, and alongside including healthy options to your food strata like good fats, more fibre and proteins, carbohydrates, for energizing your body and promote healthy weight development of the baby. Avoiding ready-to-eat or packaged food is also advised as they contain added flavours ,preservatives without any salubrious nutrients. As the nutrition source of a developing baby inside the womb is directly proportional to the mother's, the micro and macro nutrients must be well balanced in the mother's body. Decreasing your sugar intake with lesser soda drinks and fruit juices is beneficial for your dental and gut health. A trying-to-conceive healthy diet plan will prepare you for pregnancy food abstinence and increase natural chances of conception and thriving pregnancy.
Miraculously every human body is a different masterpiece. Every human body works and reacts differently, and with the inherent motherly instincts, you would know what suits you and when you are ready to accept the responsibility of motherhood. Your mental health, family structure and financial position is equally significant towards this life-changing decision.
We have compiled the the above points to help you to reach optimum health before you start trying to conceive. You can adopt the self-checks to your lifestyle asap, for other technical and healthcare-related points, a clarification from your doctor or gynaecologist will clear your doubts and boost your confidence on the way to motherhood.
