“When the rich and the powerful rise they leave the powerless and the poor without possibility.” ― Auliq Ice
It comes as no surprise that a recent report by the EU Tax Observatory found that:
“...most people pay a higher rate than the super-rich, who, it said, are able to use complex business structures for avoidance.”  (BBC News: 24/010/23)
Taxes pay for public services, from military defence to social welfare, from education to essential infrastructure.  Our Tory government (and Labour under Starmer is no better) repeatedly tell us there is no money to fund public services. Before ANY public services are improved we “must grow the economy"
“Keir Starmer: I don’t want to raise income tax for top earners. Labour leader says ‘driving principle’ is to lower taxes and encourage economic growth if party wins next election.” (Telegraph: 23/06/23)
And on the Tory side we have:
“Rishi Sunak has pledged to boost the economy." (Sky news: 04/01/23)
There is little point in “boosting the economy” if the main benefactors are the rich who pay little or no tax. We can have the fasters growing and biggest economy in the world but it will not do us any good if the rich and super-rich do not pay their fair share of taxes.
Commenting on the EU Tax Observatory Report and tax evasion, Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel prize-winning economist stated:
“Tax evasion, and, more broadly, tax avoidance, is not inevitable; it is the result of policy choices – or the failure to make policy choices that act to stop it.” (Guardian: 22/10/23)
There is the crux of the matter. Tax evasion is NOT inevitable. It is the decisions of governments to allow tax evasion by the rich and superrich to continue that leads to under spending on our vital public services. It is the false suppression of wages so that corporations can maximise  profits at the expense of their workers that leads to increasing poverty. And it is greed-inflation that leads to artificially high prices wherein it is ordinary workers  who shoulder the burden of a cost of living crisis created by immoral profiteering.
I am not a great believer in conspiracy theories but it does seem odd that various  governments across the democratic capitalist world are all suffering the same problem: not enough revenue from taxes to maintain adequate public services.
Here in Britain, our very own pro-free market capitalist government has just announced it is ending the cap on banker’s bonuses.
“UK financial regulators scrap cap on bankers’ bonuses. Bonus cap to end on 31 October, a move condemned by unions as an ‘insult to working people’.”  (Guardian:24/10/23)
It’s good to know our multi-millionaire, unelected Prime Minister Rishi Sunak  is doing everything he can to look after the rich during our cost of living crisis. How on earth would they survive without his support?

Subtitled: "Elite Immunity" and the Abandonment of the Working Class
I recently watched "The Rise of the Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else" on ENDEVR's YT channel. In this episode, I will discuss that documentary as well as Glenn Greenwald's book With Liberty and Justice for Some: How the Law is Used to Destroy Equality and Protect the Powerful.
Key topics:
✔️The neocons and neolibs work together as part of the same elite class? Say it ain't so! ✔️The elites break the law and then pardon themselves. How could we be surprised by that? At this point, it would be more shocking if they obeyed the laws they expect the rest of us to follow. ✔️"These guys are making up to $1 billion a day." ✔️Governments as instruments of the wealthy super elite.

POVERTY: A MORAL FAILING
While nurses and other healthcare workers are forced to use foodbanks due to years of Tory austerity and pay awards lower than inflation, Rishi Sunak’s wife just received £6.7 million pocket money from one of her many investments.
“Akshata Murty to get almost £6.7m in Infosys dividend. Income of Rishi Sunak’s wife from Indian tech firm to reach £13m for financial year." Guardian: 13/04/23)
Surprisingly, this is not a criticism of Murty herself. She just happened to be born to a mega-rich family and is reaping the benefits of unearned income.   What I would argue, however, is that people like the Sunak’s cannot possibly understand what it is like to be poor. There is no way they can understand the emotional stress and damage done to the mental health of working people unable to feed their families because the wage they earn is simply too small to cover their ever-increasing bills.
Poverty affects every aspect of a person’s life and those of their children. It is no coincidence that the majority of so-called “failing schools" are in deprived areas. It is no coincidence that life expectancy of the poor is far shorter than for those earning a decent wage. The government’s own figures state:
“Female healthy life expectancy at birth in the most deprived areas was 19.3 years fewer than in the least deprived areas in 2018 to 2020; for males it was 18.6 years fewer..."  (ONC: Health state life expectancies by national deprivation deciles, England: 2018 to 2020)
It is no coincidence that child poverty is on the increase:
“Today’s annual poverty statistics show an estimated 350,000 more children were pulled into poverty last year, largely because the Government cut the £20 universal credit (UC) uplift half-way through the year.”  (Child Poverty Action Group:  23/03/23)
My point is that the rise in poverty is almost entirely due to government wage policy in the public sector and the greed of shareholders and CEO’s in the private sector. Under Tory rule unfairness in pay awards is now the norm in both private and public sectors of the economy.
Here are a few headlines referencing the private sector.
“UK dividends expected to beat 2022 forecasts as energy prices soar.”              (FT: 22/04/22)
Pay of FTSE 100 chief executives rose an average of 23% in 2022.” Guardian: 07/11/22)
“Rail firm paid shareholders £500m before asking workers to take a wage cut.”  (opendemocracy: 23/06/22)
“Shareholder payouts rose three times faster than UK wages…” (Observer: 15/10/22)
So while the Sunak’s enjoy the benefit of a £6.7 million investment payout to their already substantial fortune do not expect them to really understand what life is like for the poor. The Sunak’s are simply making the most of the system we live under and until we decide to change that system the glaring inequalities we all know and recognise will continue to exist.
We ALL know that it is morally wrong for hard working people to receive less than a living wage, a wage inadequate to feed their families and meet the essential bills, while those they work for live in luxury.
But don’t take my word for that. The immorality of Britain’s corporate system is even beginning to trouble those who you would expect to be supporters of the present system.
Baroness Wheatcroft, onetime editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal and editor of the Tory leaning Sunday Telegraph, had this to say when talking about the Confederation of British Industry:
“I don’t actually think that the CBI has for a long time wanted to confront the biggest issue, which is whether business is treating people fairly. And particularly, when you think about the number of people who are now in employment but are having to go to food banks. I think there is a question mark over whether business is actually behaving in best possible way that benefits society.”
Maybe Rishi Sunak should also ask if his government is actually behaving in the best possible way that benefits ALL of society and not just the superrich like himself and his family?

Titanic Folly
Sight seeing actually on a sea grave is not ok, however rich you are. The Titanic (or Britanic?) Was a huge loss of life and the survivors (mostly the upper classes as us poor folk were locked below so as not to offend the sensitive stomachs and senses of the wealthy genteel class) were never the same after it. Well none of those with any morals or empathy anyway. So tbh I am sad that people, any…
