How not to keep Russians at bay (To HEL and back 3)
We've decided to make Finland's relationship with Sweden the focus of our second full day in Helsinki.
On our arrival, I noted that train stations carried both Finnish and Swedish names.  The connection between the two countries, I concluded, must be deep.
It turns out it’s even deeper than I thought: that all streets in this city, even some shops, have bilingual designations.
Tumblr media
Over 200 years after the Swedes left, their former subjects are treating them as superguests.
Last night I tried to understand why.  I googled "Finland under Swedish rule".  I learn that it ended with the Finnish War of 1808-09. That conflict, Wikipedia reveals, was a sideshow in the Napoleonic Wars.
Sweden sided with the Brits and Russia with the French tyrant. When the Swedish king, Gustav Adolf, insisted on pissing off Napoleon by continuing to trade with Britain, Czar Alexander attacked (he was he was not the last Kremlin ruler to pounce on Finland after misguidedly embracing his own future aggressor - but that's a story for later).
The events that followed were extraordinary.  Some Swedes had been unhappy with the king's provocative stance from the start.  There had been debate in the Diet.
Russian successes in the war emboldened the critics.  They said: "A fine mess your Majesty got us into!  Why couldn't you just roll over, like everyone else on the continent?"
Tumblr media
When Gustav Adolf said: "Shut up, I'm your king!" he was packed off across the Baltic sea to reflect on who was boss in a modern country.
A replacement monarch had to be found pronto.  In the middle of a war Sweden was losing, the lawmakers were still arguing among themselves and not thinking straight.  They settled on a childless 60-year-old with early-onset dementia named Charles.
By late 1809, the country was in deep trouble: it had lost Finland; King Charles, on top of going gaga, had just suffered a heart attack.
Their minds concentrated by a looming succession crisis, the rival factions searched for a suitable heir.  They agreed on a 41-year-old Danish prince, but he died of a stroke shortly after arriving in Stockholm for his induction course.
This is when the Diet panicked.  The government floated the idea of head-hunting a French general, just to placate Napoleon. There was lively debate in the chamber.
"Are you out of your mind?" one lawmaker said. "The Russians have just taken a third of our land - and you want to hand over the rest to their French masters!" "We were attacked by Russia because of the disastrous policies YOU supported." "And your solution is a Bonaparte stooge?" (Shouts) "Every country in Europe has one on the throne. But our stooge, as you put it, would be answerable to THIS body, like all Swedish monarchs.  He would be our insurance policy."
Swedes were weary of war and the plan sailed through the Diet.
The hunt for a Napoleonic general yielded one Jean Bernadotte.  He was from the south-west, as far away from Sweden as you can possibly be in France.
Bernadotte was tracked down to a brothel in Rome.  When asked if he wanted to be the next king of Sweden, he asked: "Isn't it cold up there?"  The recruitment agent said: "A bit, but their women are fit."
Tumblr media
Thus in 1810, Bernadotte became first in line to succeed the decrepit king.
Fast-forward five years.  Charles is still not dead.  Napoleon has been crushed and sent to rot in the mid-Atlantic.
There is renewed debate in the Swedish Diet.
"All bets are off.  We have nothing to insure against now.  Let’s send that Frog back to where he belongs and get an heir with true Viking blood." "We ARE Vikings: our word is our bond.  We won’t go back on it.  Monsieur Bernadotte has learned Swedish..." "By sleeping with our women!"  (Shouts). "Order, order!" "This is insane!  All other kingdoms have removed French usurpers. And the statminister wants Sweden, alone in Europe, to install a Napoleonic relic on its throne!" "If we don’t honour our promise to Monsieur Bernadotte, this assembly will lose all credibility in the eyes of the world and its own people."
No prize for guessing who won the vote.  Bernadotte became king of Sweden in 1818 and his ample progeny still reigns over the nation.
Fascinating as it is, this story doesn't tell me how the Swedes lost Finland.  To find out, we have to take a ferry to Suomenlinna, Helsinki's fortress island.
Tumblr media
The 18th-century bastion, just 4km from the city centre, has been beautifully preserved and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. To understand its rationale, we have to backtrack a bit.
The 1808-09 war was not a one-off.  Sweden and Russia had fought over Finland for centuries, each seeking to control it as a buffer against the other.
Sweden, a northern superpower in the 17th and 18th centuries, got there first.  But after Russian advances in the 1740s, it decided to reinforce its Finnish defences with a sea fortress.
Tumblr media
It was the biggest military project Sweden had ever undertaken.  It involved building ramparts not just on an island, but also around the Helsinki.  In those days, cities were like wine: to pack any punch, they had to be fortified.
The ambition was astounding. The Sveaborg citadel, as the Swedes called it, contained a huge shipyard.
Tumblr media
The complex also included plush digs for officers (above) and an imposing church (below).
Tumblr media
All that cost a bundle.  Even after getting the French to pick up half the bill (Russia was Paris's bogeyman back then, so Sweden was our friends) Stockholm just couldn't afford it.
Work began in 1748 and continued piecemeal through the 1750s. The land defences were never completed, rendering the whole exercise pointless.
During the 1808 war Russia just grabbed Helsinki and Sveaborg surrendered.
But according to observers, that white elephant did have its use.  It consumed so much effort and treasure that the Finns thought: "Wow, we must mean a lot to those Swedes if they're prepared to waste all that money on us!"
Local confidence was greatly boosted.  The Suomenlinna guidebook cites a Swedish grandee who noted in 1765 that "Finns now dared to invest in the economy and industry of their own country".
Tumblr media
Sveaborg under Russian rule also has an interesting story to tell.
The Czars were relaxed about Finland, which retained its own language and laws.  It continued to prosper as an autonomous duchy.  But the fortress was deemed strategically important, so Russia kept the island and neighbouring rocks for its Baltic Fleet.
In 1917, the Finns took advantage of the October Revolution to break away.  The vassal dukedom became an independent republic.
The split was formalised by a treaty and Russian troops left.  But the fortress officially remained theirs and they stayed there.
It was not until 1918 that the island was annexed by Finland: the base was renamed Suomenlinna as the last Russians went home.
The dockyard continued to operate throughout. After 1945 it built ships for the USSR as reparation for the war Finns misguidedly launched against the Soviets in 1941 (also a sideshow in a wider conflict – but that's a story for later).
The facility is still being used to repair vessels.
Tumblr media
Suomenlinna/Sveaborg, in short, is central to understanding what binds Finland to Sweden.  It is a Nordic legacy set in stone. It is the reason Swedes feel at home in Helsinki, where they find intelligible street signs, tolerant attitudes, a robust parliamentary democracy, an efficient high-tech economy, a polyglot workforce and familiarly steep restaurant prices.
As we head out to the ravintola that evening, I wonder if I was right to add 15% tips to the astronomical bills for our first two dinners. I ask the hotel receptionist about Finnish etiquette in these matters.
"Oh, waiters don't really expect anything," she says. "Sometimes I round up a few euros, but that's only when I feel rich."
Two hours later, having despatched two courses and a thimbleful of wine each, we are handed the credit-card reader.  Do I want to add a tip to our €138.80 bill? the machine asks meaningfully.
I can’t help but think €1.20 would be an insult to our smiling waitress: I sign off on a €150 total.

That's so funny to me that Tom didn't change his clothes on the flight because his NYC-LON flight was an overnight flight and they hand out special pyjamas to change into (in first and business). And he had some carry-on luggage too.
I am a travel agent and I find it so interesting Tom's relationship with British Airways. He must be a VVIP superguest (the secret top level, higher than Gold) because he always flies them even if there's a more direct route on other airlines (he could have done NYC-ROM direct on other airlines but chose British Airways even though it was a slightly longer flight with a transit stop). He would have a dedicated phone line to his own concierge and ticketing, and service escorts through major airports including JFK and Heathrow to walk him through the public areas.
All good points, and he may have used his frequent flyer miles for the trip to Rome.

Here is a Detailed Guide to Create an App like Airbnb
Do you also have a Home-Away-from-Home idea and looking to get a replica of a giant in the industry-Airbnb? If yes, then you just need to spend 8 minutes to learn how to build and develop an application like Airbnb for vacation rental.
Although there are rumors that the vacation rental industry has become oversaturated. But Unicorn in the market like Airbnb currently owns only 10-15% of the vacation rental market, which means there is still a lot of space for another unicorn to disrupt this niche.
So, now the question is how to create an app like Airbnb and how much heavy it will be for your pocket. Here is a full guide that can help you build the same model as Airbnb to launch your startup.
This blog covers:
What is Airbnb?
Fundings of Airbnb
Why you should consider building an app like Airbnb?
Who are Airbnb Competitors to take into account?
How Airbnb works?
Airbnb business model
Airbnb results
How to make an app like Airbnb?
Airbnb features and costs to develop them
Team and Technologies
Final Estimate to Create an App like Airbnb
Let’s dive in:
What is Airbnb?
Airbnb is one of the best and popular homestay platforms, which through its property rental service allows travelers to stay at the local’s place and make the experience better for both hosts and guests. With its headquarters in San Francisco, the company operates online hospitality and online marketplace service all over the world through web and mobile applications. The members can use the services to offer homestays to tourists visiting their place.
It took a long journey of 9 years for Airbnb to generate sustainable revenue out of its product, and to turn it into the mobile application, which was initially started with a website.
Fundings of Airbnb
This homestay app connects travellers who are seeking comfortable and affordable places to stay with homeowners who have such inspiring places around the world. Airbnb has more than 4,500,000 listings around 191 countries and 65000 cities.
Company had already funding from 15 companies round to date and has raised $4.4 billion.
Why you should consider building app like Airbnb?
Applications like Airbnb and Uber are considered to be the best examples of progressive ways of human-within society interaction. Two has successfully earned unicorn status because they aided in building a “sharing economy” model. Airbnb helps travellers in getting the property for stay at cheap cost and also an opportunity to host to earn by renting their property.
There is significant growth in terms of vacation rental demands in travel industry; however, the supply has not increased to that level. Hence, there is wide scope to venture this niche by launching your startup with application like Airbnb.
Who are Airbnb Competitors to take into account?
Airbnb is not the only platform has put its foot in the game-changing travel format. Some of the companies, which can also considered while building an application like Airbnb:
1.      HomeAway: It holds over 1 million global listings and offer similar services like Airbnb. There are also a few additional services that it offers like an insurance program. It operates some other sites also like TravelMob, VacationRentals and VRBO.
2.      Roomorama: This app ask users to share their personal ID’s, bills and also personal pictures to ensure that the application is safe for guests.
3.      FlipKey: This is a company owned by TripAdvisor and has a large base of users. They offer more than 5000 special deals every day to maintain the loyalty of users.
How Does Airbnb Works?
Airbnb has two types of users-guests and landlords.
How Does Airbnb Work for Guests?
Step 1: The user goes to the web or mobile applications, and registers in as a guest.
Step 2: Next, they complete the profile and add necessary data as ID number, profile picture and more.
Step 3: The client can choose appropriate place to live like type of space, price, location and more.
Step 4: The guests requests a stay and receives confirmation for the same.
Step 5: It is required to pay for the reservation before using the service.
Step 6: The final step is to enjoy the stay.
How does Airbnb work for hosts?
Step 1: The users are required to register as a host and confirm that they over the age of 18.
Step 2: After that, user can add the property on Airbnb. The host can add data about the accommodation like type of apartment, location and number of guests who can accommodate.
Step 3: Landlords are required to upload the real pictures of the apartment and also mention the price.
Step 4: When the guest requests a stay, discuss all the details like clean standards, quiet hours and a host can start a conversation.
Step 5: If everything is fine, the host approves the stay. However, landlord also has an opportunity to reject the stay if it is required.
Step 6: The host receives the payment in 24 hours after the check-in by guests.
Airbnb Business Model
Tumblr media
Airbnb offers applications for two major mobile platforms i.e. iOS and Andorid, and also have a web application. Airbnb also supports smartwatches so that users can receive a notification faster and stay up-to-date without any changes.
The company generates its revenue by the booking fees that it receives:
·         For every transaction, host has to pay 3% to Airbnb.
·         Guest has to a pay 6-12% of the booking fee, depending upon the size of the reservation.
  Airbnb Results

To start using the application, the guest would be required to first register on the application. The basic model would include providing users with email and password registration. Additionally, it is important to create a “Term and Policy” screen since users should agree with the policy of use.
Login:
Make sure to add provide users with options like login with Google account, Facebook and email. Each integration takes approximately 8 hours of development. In addition to this, it is important to add functions like “Log-out” and “Forgot Password” to make sure your application is user-friendly.
Search:
It is better to add an advanced search system to option, where user can find their temporary dwelling applying various filters like the number of guests and date of the trip.
Favorites:
This feature offers users the option to add their favorite places to the list. After that, they can select the desired one from their “favorite marked” accommodations.
Profile:
An app like Airbnb has two types of users-guests and hosts. Make sure to add a feature so that both guests and hosts can edit the profile and add personal data like name, age, sex and so on.
Chats:
With chat features, guests and hosts will find it easy to communicate and discuss things like location after requesting a stay. Guests can ask for photos of the property before visiting the place. Moreover, developers can also add various statuses like reading and typing to make the application more user-friendly.
Payments:
It is good to offer various payment methods to make the process easy for the user. Also, there should be an option available to add and remove cards.
Order:
The last feature of any booking service application is requesting for a stay. The users select the house to stay in and should be able to book it if the accommodation on the required data is available.
