Day 151: The Slave Epic (and a Break for Beer)
Tumblr media
We had originally planned to visit Prague Castle today, but it was just too hot. We still didn’t sleep well, and it was going to be another day of mid-90s and scorching sun. Not a day that we wanted to spend walking around a hill outdoors.
So instead, we went back to the Old Town and drank beer. But first, we went to see a remarkable exhibit in the Municipal House: Mucha’s Slav Epic.
As we'd learned the day before at the Mucha Museum, Mucha’s later career was focused on creating art that celebrated Slavic culture, which had suffered for centuries under repression from other European overlords. And the magnum opus of this effort was the Slave Epic, a collection of twenty staggeringly large oil paintings depicting key scenes from Slavic history and culture. Each painting is notable in its own right, but the overarching themes of the cycle are unity, piety, and valor.
The exhibit only held 11 of the 20 canvases. The smallest pieces are over 13ft x 15ft, and most are 20ft x 26ft. Not even the huge Municipal House could display all twenty at once. I was a little disappointed to realize this at first, but even this abridged collection was astonishing. The fact that it was in Prague at all was a massive stroke of luck and far outweighed the disappointment of missing the astronomical clock.
The Epic tells an overarching story of Slavic culture, focusing on the virtues of unity, piety, and valor. But each canvas also tells its own self-contained story. As important as the depicted events are in Slavic history, Jessica and I had to rely on the included pamphlet to understand who and what was going on in each painting.
The cycle starts with the birth of Slavic culture, religion, intellectualism, and law. It then follows pivotal moments of military, political, and religious conflict between the Slavic peoples and the rest of Europe, as well as moments of unity between the various Slavic nations. It ends, with tragic and unintended irony, with the liberation of the Slavic people at the end of World War I–a beautiful celebration of old and new and an exhortation for the Slavic people to move forward into a new golden age of ever-greater accomplishments.
That was in 1926. And we all know how the rest of the 20th century went for them.
From a purely artistic standpoint, there were a few paintings that particularly struck us. We weren't allowed to take pictures, but we were allowed to take postcards (again).
Tumblr media
This painting–or rather, the painting this postcard is a print of–shows a victorious Slavic army. A united force of Poles, Lithuanians, and other Slavic nations have just won a pivotal victory against the invading Teutonic Knights at the Battle of Grunwald. I don’t recall ever learning about it in school, but Grunwald was one of the largest and most important battles in all of medieval European history.
The Polish king stands on a hill in the background looking down upon the defeated Teutonic soldiers. Although this is a great victory for the Slavic people against the continual attempts to Germanize Eastern Europe, the focus is not on the victors but of the defeated. The mood is one of sorrow for the pointless waste of human life.
Even though many of his paintings are set in battlefields, Mucha intentionally painted them without any depictions of blood or active fighting. He wanted the Epic to glorify peace, not violence.
Tumblr media
Another captivating painting shows the Hussite King Jiri of Bohemia dramatically rebuffing an envoy from the Vatican. The Hussites rejected the hierarchy of Roman Catholic church and condemned the wealth and political power that the church had accumulated for itself.
Pope Pius II sent a high-ranking representative to Prague, expecting to intimidate King Jiri back into submission to Rome. Instead, Jiri defiantly stood his ground and rejected the envoy. In the painting, Jiri has just knocked over the chair that was traditionally offered to honored guests. The king is majestic, the envoy is shocked and outraged, and the rest of the crowd shows off a variety of stunned expressions, some rather comedic. Tucked into the foreground, a young man literally closes the book on Rome.
Tumblr media
One painting showed a captivating scene at a church on Mount Athos, a Greek island-mountain home to some of the most important monasteries in the Eastern Orthodox church. A group of Slavic pilgrims worship in the church overseen by a host of angels, who hover above them in an ethereal green glow.
Tumblr media
The Epic culminates with the spectacular Apotheosis of the Slavs. As I mentioned above, it shows the Slavic race triumphant. Old enemies fade into the dark background while the Slavic people march forward to a new and glorious age of freedom.
After taking our time to soak in the Epic, the Municipal House, and the air conditioning, we headed over to Supa, which claims to be the oldest brewpub in Prague. an old brewpub to sample their wares and get some lunch.
Tumblr media
We tasted a flight of six beers, including two beers made by Supa, two traditional beers from other Czech breweries, a Czech-brewed Irish-style black stout, and an imported Belgian dark ale fortified with cherry liqueur (Kasteel Rouge). As you might have noticed, the beers were about 75% foam and 25% actual beer. But after reading about it later, I realized that this was probably intentional and not just a case of sloppy tapsmanship. In the Czech Republic, no one wants to get a half-empty glass of beer--even if they don't want to drink a full one. The obvious solution is to get smaller glasses. The Czech solution is to fill the rest of the glass with foam.
Sadly for the Supa, their two beers were our least favorite. They weren’t bad, just not to our tastes--pale, dry, and hoppy. The other two Czech beers were alright, but my favorites were the Irish-style and Belgian beers. The Belgian, Kasteel Rouge, is basically a dessert beer. The first few sips taste amazing, but after that it started to get a bit cloying for me.
The food was great, too. Jessica got schnitzel with mashed potatoes, and I got boar goulash with potato dumplings. I was expecting the dumplings to be like Polish pierogies, but what I got looked more like sliced bread. They must have made a football-sized dumpling and cut it into thick slices. It was really good, though, and it made me wonder about the possibility of making a sandwich out of sliced dumplings instead of bread.
After lunch, it was still really hot and we were still really tired. So instead of walking the Old Town some more or exploring Wenceslas Square in the New Town, we just did a bit of souvenir shopping and called it an early day. But before we went home, we made sure to pick up some trdelniks. (Don’t ask me how to pronounce them.)
Tumblr media
Sold all over the place in Prague, they’re basically coiled churro baked on a spit over an open heat source. You can get them plain, but why would you do that when you can get them coated in sugar and filled with ice cream instead? Of course, there’s a reason why real ice cream cones are closed on the bottom. After just a few minutes, melted ice cream was beginning to drip through the napkins onto our hands.
And that was about it for the day. The weather forecast called for much cooler temperatures tomorrow. So for now we decided to head back to the flat and conserve what little energy we had left so that we could spend it enjoying Prague Castle in relative comfort tomorrow.

SleepWalker 2019 Freshman List
words by Amari Newman, Maxx McGee, & Brennan Ryan
We are SleepWalker Radio, broadcasting on Tuesday nights at midnight on WOBC. In our show, we listen to a lot of rap and watch a lot of rap music videos. Right now XXL is the only relevant hip hop outlet that puts out a “Freshman List,” which is a list of the best artists relatively new to the rap game who have gained a lot of attention in the most recent year. Unfortunately, every list that XXL has put out seems to be more and more out of touch with what actual fans of rap in our age range actually listen to. They also only highlight rappers in their list, even though so much more goes into the overall content put out by these artists including the beats they rap over and the music videos they put out.
So we’re going to put out our own list of rappers, producers and videographers in the rap game that’s more in touch with what people are listening to and want to experience.  This post will cover producers, and you can find the post on rappers here, but stay posted for more posts on the WOBC blog from SleepWalker Radio!
Forza
@YunForza
Forza, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, makes the rawest and rarest beats in the underground. A member of the Working On Dying producing team, Forza has made a name for himself for his use of a wide variety of samples from video games, and other things I can’t identify, matched with his signature high tempo drums and unconventional 808 patterns that automatically makes you want to mosh. His music sounds like you’re in an intergalactic space war with a bunch of spaceships flying by at like 100,000 miles per hour shooting lasers at you, and all of it is happening at like a 2x youtube speed. Like the s**t is wild to listen to.
The last few years, Forza has established himself as a pioneer in the underground’s Soundcloud scene, working with SickboyRari (Black Kray), Lil Tracy, Five Finger Posse, Bootychaaain, Bladee and Agoff. Forza has recently evolved his sound, focusing on more melodies that match his high tempo sporadic drum patterns, and has collaborated with more mainstream artists including Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Peep and Yung Bans. Forza, along with the whole Working On Dying collective, has already made a significant impact on the underground rap scene and is on track to make massive waves in the industry very soon.
Songs produced by Forza to listen to:
“Yung Bans - ETA,”  “Sub9k - Wit it,” “Lil Uzi Vert - Of course,” “Agoff - Aint no hitta”
Chinatown
@ChinatownBeats_
Chinatown, from Greensboro, North Carolina, makes some of the most melodic crankage out there. One half of the Capsule Corp production team with MilanMakesBeats, China has developed a great selection in the soundscapes that he creates through his production. His complex and layered synths mesh together to make beautiful melodies that are only enhanced by the powerful 808s and wavy drum and snare patterns that accompany them. Listening to Chinatown is like taking a stroll through the world’s most expensive chandelier shop, or driving down a highway next to the beach at midnight with a full moon out and the top down, but there's no wind, just the feeling of slight mist coming from the ocean that’s dark red. It’s honestly just beautiful to listen to.
Chinatown has worked with a variety artists, ranging from Diego Money, Chxpo, Slime Sito, ThouxanbanFauni and D Savage to more mainstream artists like Playboi Carti, Famous Dex and Rich the Kid. China is in a position to really make big moves this year with his sound getting more distinct and better, and I am already seeing a trend in other producers who are shaping their beats similar to China’s, showing how much influence he already has in the game.
Songs produced by Chinatown to listen to:
“Diego Money - Numbers,” “Playboi Carti feat Lil Uzi Vert - Firearm,” “Thouxanbanfauni - GiGi,” “Chxpo - U ALR SNOW”
Beat By Jeff
@jeffersonbeats_
Beat by Jeff, from Arlington, Texas, was probably the most influential producer in the game this past year. Originally gaining recognition in the scene for being the sole producer of almost all of Splurge’s songs, Jeff’s simplistic style quickly took over the sound of the whole rap industry in a few months. His beats are not that complex, and normally include some robotic ass and reverbed 808, hi-hats, and a clap or snare, but it cranks. And every person who raps over it sounds great. Although he did not create the #woah dance, almost all the videos that went viral of people doing it were to Beat By Jeff’s production. Once the #woah started blowing up, a large amount of relevant rappers at the time came out with songs with a Beat by Jeff “type beat” that people could #woah to. He really repopularized the non-melodic and basic components of Hip-Hop production that lets the lyricism and cleverness of a rapper shine.
Jeff has done a great job at putting people from his city on, working with a bunch of Texas artists including Splurge, 10K.Caash, S3nsi Molly and G.U.N. He has recently began to branch out, working with artists like Unotheactivist and Matt Ox. Jeff is definitely responsible for the shift in the production in rap songs that took place in 2018, and I’m sure he’ll continue to influence rap’s production this year as well.
Songs produced by Beat by Jeff to listen to:
“Splurge - Intro pt. 2,” “Unotheactivist - As a Young Boy,” “S3nsi Molly feat Lil Brook - 223,”   “Splurge - Tear it Apart”
Marcusbasquiat
@marcusbasquiat
Marcusbasquait, from New York City, has got some of the most ethereal and otherworldly beats out there. Using keys and synths that sound like chime bells moving very smoothly in a nice breeze, Marcus creates complex and beautiful hums that have futuristic snares, hi-hats and drums over it. Listening to his instrumentals puts you in an alternate universe that is probably the color purple.
This past year, Marcusbasquait has become a frequent collaborator with Lucki, being responsible for all of the production on his “Days B4 II” ep, along with producing “2012 summer” off his Freewave III project. He has also produced for Thouxanbanfauni, BOOFBOIICY, UnotheActivist, and Terrence Escobar. He is quickly developing his own sound, and it's becoming easier to identify a Marcusbasquiat beat as his collection grows. He's definitely gonna be putting out some heat as the year goes on.
Songs produced by Marcusbasquiat to listen to:
Lucki - 2012 Summer, Thouxanbanfauni - Eyes Wide Shut, Lucki - Switchlanes
LordFubu
@FUBARTI
LordFubu, from Jacksonville Florida, production is really just beautiful. His smooth keys and samples, fit perfectly with his clean drum patterns. Listening to his music is like laying on a beach with really warm sand and looking at an ocean that's crystal clear. Fubu has been steadily expanding his repertoire and reputation since 2015, currently acting as the main producer for the Marino Infantry collective operating out of Baltimore. He has produced an astonishing amount of YG Addie (A$AP Ant)’s newest material being his go to producer since 2017. He has also worked with artists like Silkmoney, A$AP Rocky, Tay K, Supa Bwe, Michael Christmas, Da$h and ICYTWAT.
LordFubu is also one of the most active producers on social media, posting cool anime edits to his beats, reviewing the many pairs of shoes that he owns or comes across, and going live on his instagram and chefin up right before his followers eyes. He’s really just a cool dude who makes smooth ass beats.
Songs produced by LordFubu to listen to:
“A$AP Ant feat Hoodrich Pablo Juan - Diamond Dust,” “A$AP Rocky - Nights like this,” “Divine Council - Dirtbags in Distress”
Cheecho
@AyeeCheecho
Cheecho, from D.C. or PG county, is probably the hardest producer out of the DMV area. His 808s hit harder than all other producers’ in the game, and his drum patterns just crank. Listening to his music feels like you’re experiencing an earthquake while in the middle of a shoot out.
Cheecho has produced for many upcoming rappers including Q da Fool, Hood Rich Pablo Juan, Goonew, Lil Dude, Big Flock, Slime Sito, Xanman (Free Xan), MoneyMarr and Baby Ahk (RIP). He has played a huge role in developing the sound coming out of the DMV area that is quickly taking over the general rap game. His production has become a staple of that sound, with almost every popping artist from the area having a song with Cheecho in the early stages of their career. Essentially, you can literally get any random person from Maryland to spit over a Cheecho beat and it’s gonna crank by default.
Songs by Cheecho to listen to:
“Q da Fool - Trap Shit,” “Lil Dude & Goonew - HunnitBandJugg,” “Slime Sito - Blanco,” “Goonew - Bag”
Noir Brent (BrentRambo)
@BRENTR4MBO
Noir Brent, from Chicago, Illinois, has some of the most lit production out there. Acquiring the most randomest sounds he can find and mixing them together over some crazy 808 and drum patterns, along with his tag that comes from an old viral meme, Brent makes every one of his beats noticeable and distinct. Noir Brent, and his frequent producer collaborator Uglyfriend, have mastered this weird production. His beats sound like a computer being microwaved, with all of its parts going haywire and making the wildest digital sounds that loop perfectly over sporadic drums and 808s.
Brent has been active since 2015 and has produced for almost every relevant “Soundcloud rapper” including Lucki, Lil Pump, Smokepurrp, Famous Dex, Madeintyo, Lil Yachty, Rich The Kid, Yung Bans, Trippie Redd, Chxpo, Warhol.ss and Nolanberollin. Brent has proven himself as one of the most unique producers of our time, and more people in the game are noticing, if they didn’t already. Brent is another producer whose really active on social media, becoming one of the most reliable meme plugs in the rap game, even though he’s toned down his meme related content as of late. He’s got some bars too. But yeah, Noir Brent’s music is beyond wild and always slaps when you listen to it.
Songs produced by Noir Brent to listen to:
“Warhol.SS -  boof!,” “Lil Xelly & Noir Brent- Started, Xrr!,” “Famous Dex feat Madeintyo - With yo B!tch,” “Noir Brent - WhutShutUp”

Two Years On - We Are Still Here - Greening, Dune & E.A.
Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us, yep it is our 2nd birthday episode. We wish to say thank you to everyone who listens to us. We really appreciate all the support and encouragement we have received. It has been an amazing experience that we have all enjoyed on the Nerds team. Well, here is to another year of Nerdity and fun, we hope you enjoy everything as we continue to look for those items we enjoy learning about and discussing.
            First up this week Buck brings us news that Global Warming is being slowed by a phenomenon known as Global Greening. Apparently all the carbon emissions have provided a positive impact for the trees and plants. Now, this is only a small impact and not enough to celebrate with street parties, but still it is some good news. So with this news coming to light and in the wake of the recent bushfires in Australia it might be a good idea to plant some trees or bushes to help the environment. If nothing else it will give the computers and consoles a break for an hour or two.
            Next up DJ has the first reactions to the new Dune movie, and it is looking promising. Of course Professor and Buck being the fans they are have some reservations, but are excited to see the latest offering when it is released. There is the usual discussion about who might be the best option for director, what were the failures in the previous movies; and what were the successes from them as well. But hopefully one day an offering will be presented that is worthy of Frank Herbert’s legendary work. DJ continues with a discussion on the impact of the Coronavirus on the Chinese film industry. There have been major disruptions in the Chinese economy and a large section of the industry is on hold while China tries to combat this epidemic. We discuss the broad effects of this, but we wish everyone well and hope that this is contained and treated soon.
            Professor has a list of 14 new games that are planned to be released this next fiscal year by EA. We have a look at the offerings and discuss what we think is the most exciting or interesting of these releases. Now it might interest you to know that what we found as the most interesting games to look forward to. We will tell you, to find out listen in and learn what are the games being released that Professor is most interested to see. Also what game Buck thinks should move across to the EA studio catalogue; and what he thinks is an approach to the new Battlefield game if the crew behind Star Citizen were involved.
            As usual we have the Shout outs, Remembrances, Birthdays, and Events of Interest for the week. We invite you to check out MySongsSuck, with our man Alex Smith. Also there is there offering of The Story Chunder, which is sure to delight some and perchance disgust others. As always remember to take care of yourselves, look out for each other, and stay hydrated.

Mary Higgins Clark, a fixture on best-seller lists for decades whose more than 50 novels earned her the sobriquet Queen of Suspense. Ms. Higgins Clark, whose books have sold more than 100 million copies in the United States alone, was still writing until recently, her daughter said, and had a book published in November. Her heroes were most often female, her villains male, and she said that she wrote about “nice people whose lives are invaded.” There are, however, two things that won’t be found in her books — sex and profanity — and that choice was deliberate. “Let others decide whether or not I’m a good writer,” she said. “I know I’m a good Irish storyteller.”  She passed away at Naples, Florida at the age of 92.

Eileen M. Collins -- the first woman to pilot the shuttle -- is at the pilot's station during a "hotfiring" procedure prior to rendezvous with the Russian Mir Space Station. The successful rendezvous without docking brought Discovery to within 37 feet of the Mir; these flights through the Shuttle-Mir Program prepared the way for the International Space Station.

- 3 February 2020 – Gene Reynolds passes away - https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/gene-reynolds-dead-mash-lou-grant-director-producer-was-96-978156
Gene Reynolds, the prolific director, producer and writer who was a driving force behind such socially conscious television series as M*A*S*H, Lou Grant and Room 222. Reynolds started out in Hollywood as a child actor at MGM in such movies as Boys Town (1938). Reynolds and Larry Gelbart created CBS' M*A*S*H, which was based on a novel by Richard Hooker and followed the Robert Altman film adaptation. "In directing, I'm always looking for the little humane touch. Something that is real. It could be very, very small," Reynolds said in a 2000 chat for the Archive of American Television website. "It could be a hand on the shoulder. It could be just an extra lingering look on somebody you care about and so forth, for just a fraction. It could be a reaction from somebody … I'm looking for humanity, really. And that goes with comedy or drama." He died at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank at the age of 96.
- 5 February 2020 – Kirk Douglas passes away - https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/05/entertainment/kirk-douglas-obit/index.html
Kirk Douglas, one of the great Hollywood leading men whose off-screen life was nearly as colorful as his on-screen exploits in movies like "Spartacus" and "Champion,". Michael Douglas said that his father's life "was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet." He added: "Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday, and which will always remain true. Dad- I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son." In perhaps the most famous -- and certainly most lampooned -- scene from "Spartacus," his fellow rebels, captured by the Roman army, rise to proclaim, "I'm Spartacus!" when told their lives will be spared if they identify him. He died in Beverly hills, California at the age of 103.
Remembrances
- 3 February 1468 – Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Gutenberg
German blacksmith, goldsmith, inventor, printer, and publisher who introduced printing to Europe with the printing press. His introduction of mechanical movable type printing to Europe started the Printing Revolution and is regarded as a milestone of the second millennium, ushering in the modern period of human history. It played a key role in the development of the Renaissance,Reformation, the Age of Enlightenment, and the scientific revolution and laid the material basis for the modern knowledge-based economy and the spread of learning to the masses. The use of movable type was a marked improvement on the handwritten manuscript, which was the existing method of book production in Europe, and upon woodblock printing, and revolutionized European book-making. Gutenberg's printing technology spread rapidly throughout Europe and later the world. His major work, the Gutenberg Bible (also known as the 42-line Bible), was the first printed version of the Bible and has been acclaimed for its high aesthetic and technical quality. He died at the age of around 68 in Mainz, Electorate of Mainz in the Holy Roman Empire.
- 3 February 1935 – Hugo Junkers - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Junkers
German aircraft engineer and aircraft designer who pioneered the design of all-metal airplanes and flying wings. His company, Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke AG (Junkers Aircraft and Motor Works), was one of the mainstays of the German aircraft industry in the years between World War I and World War II. His multi-engined, all-metal passenger- and freight planes helped establish airlines in Germany and around the world. In addition to aircraft, Junkers also built both diesel and petrol engines and held various thermodynamic and metallurgical patents. He died at the age of 76 in Gauting,Bavaria.
- 3 February 1959 – The Day Music Died -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_the_Music_Died
American rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson were killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, together with pilot Roger Peterson. The event later became known as "The Day the Music Died", after singer-songwriter Don McLean referred to it as such in his 1971 song "American Pie". Soon after take-off, late at night and in poor, wintry weather conditions, the pilot lost control of the light aircraft, a Beechcraft Bonanza, which subsequently crashed into a cornfield. Everyone on board was killed. The event has since been mentioned in various songs and films. A number of monuments have been erected at the crash site and in Clear Lake, where an annual memorial concert is also held at the Surf Ballroom, the venue that hosted the artists' last performance.
Famous Birthdays
- 3 February 1480 – Ferdinand Magellan - https://www.onthisday.com/people/ferdinand-magellan
Portuguese explorer who organised the Spanish expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, resulting in the first circumnavigation of the Earth, completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano. Commanding a fleet of five vessels, he headed south through the Atlantic Ocean to Patagonia. Despite a series of storms and mutinies, they made it through the Strait of Magellan into a body of water he named the "peaceful sea" (the modern Pacific Ocean). The expedition reached the Philippine islands, where Magellan was killed during the Battle of Mactan. The expedition later reached the Spice Islands in 1521 and one of the surviving ships eventually returned home via the Indian Ocean, completing the first circuit of the globe. Magellan had already reached the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia on previous voyages traveling east (from 1505 to 1511–1512). By visiting this area again but now travelling west, Magellan achieved a nearly complete personal circumnavigation of the globe for the first time in history. He was born in Sabrosa.

He was born in Rheydt, Rhine Province.

- 3 February 1961 – The United States Air Forces begins Operation Looking Glass, and over the next 30 years, a "Doomsday Plane" is always in the air, with the capability of taking direct control of the United States' bombers and missiles in the event of the destruction of the SAC's command post.  - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Looking_Glass
It provides command and control of U.S. nuclear forces in the event that ground-based command centers have been destroyed or otherwise rendered inoperable. In such an event, the general officer aboard the Looking Glass serves as the Airborne Emergency Action Officer (AEAO) and by law assumes the authority of the National Command Authority and could command execution of nuclear attacks. The AEAO is supported by a battle staff of approximately 20 people, with another dozen responsible for the operation of the aircraft systems. The name Looking Glass, which is another name for a mirror, was chosen for the Airborne Command Post because the mission operates in parallel with the underground command post at Offutt Air Force Base. The Looking Glass was also designed to help ensure COG, continuity and reconstitution of the US government in the event of a nuclear attack on North America. Although the two types of aircraft are distinct, the Doomsday Plane nickname is also frequently associated with the E-4 "Nightwatch" Advanced Airborne Command Post mission and aircraft.
- 3 February 1966 – Lunik 9 lands on lunar surface - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/lunik-9-soft-lands-on-lunar-surface
On February 3, 1966, the Soviet Union accomplishes the first controlled landing on the moon, when the unmanned spacecraft Lunik 9 touches down on the Ocean of Storms. After its soft landing, the circular capsule opened like a flower, deploying its antennas, and began transmitting photographs and television images back to Earth.
- 3 February 1981 - John Buster and the research team at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center announce history's first embryo transfer, from one woman to another resulting in a live birth. - http://thebusterclan.blogspot.com/2016/08/john-e-buster-doctor-that-helped-create.html
In the procedure, an embryo that was just beginning to develop was transferred from the woman in whom it had been conceived by artificial insemination to another woman who gave birth to the infant 38 weeks later. The sperm used in the artificial insemination came from the husband of the woman who bore the baby. This scientific breakthrough established standards and became an agent of change for women suffering from the afflictions of infertility and for women who did not want to pass on genetic disorders to their children. Donor embryo transfer has given women a mechanism to become pregnant and give birth to a child that will contain their husband’s genetic makeup. Although donor embryo transfer as practiced today has evolved from the original non-surgical method, it now accounts for approximately 10% of in vitro fertilization recorded births.

The Calgary, Canada-based low-cost carrier unveiled its second special livery plane on Oct. 18, 2015. The Boeing 737 was created to celebrate the popular Disney movie, “Frozen.” The aircraft's tail features sisters Princess Anna and Queen Elsa. The fuselage shows snowman Olaf enjoying a summer day on the beach. It took the airline 21 days of 12-hour rotations involving a crew of six painters working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to complete. The crew used 643.5 liters of paint of 23 colors. Sparkles were added to the paint in sections to add shimmer and shine as the aircraft moves, and WestJet brought in an airbrush artist to work on details around the sun, water and castle.

On April 15, 2015, this Dallas-based carrier offered a peek at the Missouri One livery, created to celebrate its more than 30 years of service in the state. A Boeing 737-700 has been emblazoned with an artist’s rendition of the Missouri state flag. It's the ninth special state livery unveiled since the Lone Star state plane, celebrating Texas, in November 1990. Other state liveries include Arizona One, California One, Colorado One, Florida One, Illinois One, Maryland One, Nevada One, New Mexico One and Tennessee One.

The country's flag carrier went all out when “The Hobbit” movies were released since they were filmed in New Zealand and were produced and directed by native son Sir Peter Jackson. So it was only fitting for the airline to unveil a Boeing 777-300ER to celebrate “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first in a series of movies based on the beloved books by J.R.R. Tolkien. The airline worked with Jackson’s Weta Workshop to create a design that took six days and 400 man hours to paint.

The Taipei, Taiwan-based airline first partnered with Japan's Sanrio to create its Hello Kitty aircraft, using an Airbus A330-200, in October 2005. A second jet was added in 2006. The first jet was retired in 2009, but the airline created three new liveries—Hello Kitty with Magic Stars, Hello Kitty Loves Apples, and Hello Kitty Around the World—in 2011 to celebrate its 20 years in service that were put on its new A330-300 jets.

Australia's flag carrier partnered with local design studio Balarinji to create its flying art series. Under the partnership, the airline has painted four jets, including this Boeing 747 called Nalanji Dreaming. Nalanji means 'our place,' and celebrates the balance and harmony of nature in “our place” Australia. The 747 was unveiled in November 1995 to celebrate Qantas' 75th anniversary. The jet was retired in 2005.

Kulula

This South African carrier found itself making headlines worldwide after unveiling its “Flight 101” livery. The livery, created by its in-house graphics team, was part of an effort to demystify air travel and explain some of the unknowns around air travel and flying. Some of the more amusing lines include “The big cheese” pointing to the Captain, “The black box – that's actually orange,” the Landing Gear “Comes standard with supa-fly mags” and Nose Cone, “radar, antenna and a really big dish inside.” Flight 101 was one of four special liveries created by Kulula—K Dot, Vitality, This Way Up and Europcar.

365 Days of 90's Songs
Every day of 2017 (or at least close to it), I posted a different song from the 1990′s on my Facebook page. When I started it, I had no rules and no plan. I just started posting songs that came to me that I enjoyed from that era. To be honest, I had always done a lot of research on 90′s music because in film school (2010-ish), I outlined a screenplay set in 1996 and deep dove into the music then. As 2017 went on, and I continued to work 70-80 hours a week in film production, updating the list became cumbersome, but I still refused to post weak 90′s songs like “U Can’t Touch This”, “Barbie Girl” or “Blue (Da Ba De)” etc. If you like songs like that then please go listen to them, but I’m not going to pretend that I enjoyed them at all in the 90′s or now.
Looking back on this list, I wish I had put a little more thought into creating a cohesive mix or including my favorite songs, many of which were left off because I ran out of time, but most of the fun of doing this list was just winging it and seeing if anyone liked any of the random songs I did when I was 7-17 years old. I’m going to make an Apple Music and Spotify playlist out of all of these songs but compiling this full list in the proper order already took enough time for this weekend.
