Sunfyre the Golden~
Tumblr media
It's no mystery why he's considered to be the most beautiful dragon to ever fly the Westerosi skies. Only 7 weeks left to wait for season 2 and we'll finally get to see this majestic boy in action!

An untamed, wild dragon that lived on Dragonstone during the reign of Viserys I. He had made his lair in a smoking vent high on the desolate eastern side of the volcano called Dragonmont. There were two other wild dragons; The Cannibal and Sheepstealer, the latter was later claimed by a dragonseed called Nettles.
Grey Ghost was said to be the colour of morning mist; a pale grey-silver. He was shy, and stayed away from humans. Feasting on fish, he was often seen diving in the sea for food. He never harmed any of the villagers on the island, nor did he seek out any company. Grey Ghost seemed to be happy in his solitude.
During the Dance of the Dragons, Jacaerys called for every possible rider and dragonseed to claim a dragon for the Blacks, but Grey Ghost was an elusive creature. He was never claimed as he avoided human contact.
However, he was later slain by Sunfyre, and partially eaten upon Aegon’s return to Dragonstone.

Sunfyre 'The Golden' Aesthetic.
Sunfyre was a beautiful dragon with gleaming gold scales and pale pink wing membranes. In the sunlight his scales shone like beaten gold. Sunfyre was fierce and very powerful, but towards the end of his life he was almost cowed by the battles he'd fought.

I have to admit one thing - I'm totally anti TG, but I love dragons. I watch this series mainly for the dragons. That's why I really wanted to see Sunfyre, because it was praised so much, it was said that it was the most beautiful dragon ever seen in Westeros…
And he's completely meh.
I know that F&B is a book written supposedly by TG supporters, but to do such good marketing for them? Seriously, from what I can see from his design, he's completely average. Meleys, Caraxes, and even Daenerys' triplets have better designs in terms of visuals. I know a lot can change, but it won't drastically change its appearance. Even its golden scales are not so "wow", because in the series Syrax was also referred to as a "golden beast".

Ok so totally weird brainwave yet what if Maelor had an egg that was the exact colouring (if not a bit lighter) than Sunfyre and when the egg hatched he names his dragon sunstroke as when the light hits his scales unlike how Sunfyre is golden Sunstroke is so bright it's like a blinding light that hits you.

Was sunfyre a wild dragon?
Hi anon! So canonically, it's unclear exactly what Sunfyre's exact origin was, all we know for sure is that he was hatched on Dragonstone. There were hatcheries on Dragonstone tended by the dragonkeepers with lots of eggs (enough that cradle eggs were still a thing when Aegon V was born) and, at the time, hatchlings. We also know at the time that Cannibal was eating eggs and hatchlings, and I admit wild dragon Sunfyre who successfully avoids becoming Cannibal's snack is kind of a fun idea given the survival theme that is later part of his and Aegon's story.
That said, I think based on book canon Sunfyre was likely a hatchling from the Dragonstone hatcheries. We know that Aegon first flew Sunfyre in 120AC when he was 13, and that was what made Aemond start agitating for a dragon of his own, at which point Viserys made the suggestion that Aemond make a trip to Dragonstone to claim a hatchling (of course, he claimed Vhagar before this could happen), which suggests to me that Aegon had done the same thing at some point in the past. Aegon didn't fly Sunfyre until 120AC, and we know that Aegon couldn't have claimed an adult dragon that very year, otherwise Aemond would have claimed one at the same time, so it stands to reason that Aegon did this when Aemond was still too young to take the risk, maybe around age 8 or so. I don't think either of the boys ever had an unhatched cradle egg because they were born at a time when cradle eggs hadn't yet become the Done Thing for all Targaryen children (competitive dragon hatching seemed to start with Rhaenyra's kids), so the lack of one wouldn't have seemed odd, and Otto would have wanted them to claim fully grown dragons anyhow (Aemond understood the assignment). So if Aegon made a sanctioned trip to Dragonstone for the specific purpose of claiming a hatchling at some point in his childhood, it almost certainly would have been to visit the hatcheries.
