It started with Casper High failing to fail, resulting in winning the Thomas & Martha Wayne contest despite their best efforts not to, causing them to spend the summer as interns in Gotham.

According to Danny, the miserable expirence ended after he spent the whole summer getting kidnapped because the average Gothomite was blind and couldn't tell apart a sixteen from a thirteen year old which went to it's logical extreme of him putting the Joker on life support after the clown stabbed Damian Wayne and his whole class nearly getting adopted by the Red Hood after they somehow took out the Russian mafia.

According to the birth certificate Bruce found, this was still very much the beginning and why oh why did he always get surprise relationships?! And no he was not panicking, shut up dear children.

The only one not freaking out is Damian who is eager to finally have a blood family member(s?) he doesn't have to worry about trying to kill him or usurp his place as the blood son.

Breathe With Me: Chapter 21 snippet

I know I'm MONTHS behind on getting a chapter out. This one is far from done, and the stuff I have written (such as this snippet) still needs editing, but, just to prove I ain't dead and to celebrate my completion of a bunch of house-buying adulting and dealing with Scary Numbers, here's the beginning of chapter 21.

Chapter 21: When the Storm Subsides

2nd of Summer Ascending (Year 2)

“…Are you sure you want to go?” Aura asked, smiling wanly as Aaron secured the last of his bags onto his motorcycle, tightening the traveling straps with a grunt.  She crossed her arms as a chilly breeze rolled over them. Even though it was now officially Summer on the calendar, a storm-front rolling in from the ocean had made everything cool and damp.  The air tasted of impending rain.  “It might be a wet ride.”  She stood on the bottom step of the front porch, still in her pajamas, a pair of slippers doing little to warm her feet as she pulled her cardigan tighter about herself.

“I tracked the weather… I’ll be riding ahead of the storm,” Aaron said, glancing at her and smiling apologetically.  “I promised Drake and Pat, sis.  I’ve already stayed a week longer than I originally planned,” he added, not unkindly.

“I know, but… I’ve gotten used to having you around.  And not just for the help,” She added quickly as a sardonic smile curved his lips. “It was just cool having you around, you know?” She ducked her head, avoiding his gaze, feeling a little silly at the amount of trepidation she felt. She needn’t fear rejection from her own brother, but the feeling was there all the same.

“It was cool being around, but…” Aaron fidgeted with the straps again.  “It’s not just the gig for my friends, I have a construction job lined up that will get me some good money this Summer and into Fall. I’d be an idiot to turn it down. Don’t get me wrong… working on the farm has been neat.  I like feeling reconnected to my family’s roots… and I like being with you. But… this is your place now, Aura. Not mine.”

“It can be yours too,” Aura protested. “Grandpa wanted all three of us to have it.”

“I know, but… moving here to become a full-time farmer is a pretty big decision.  And there’s a lot of stuff involved besides ‘hey this might be cool’, you know?” He turned to face her. “I mean… not to be indelicate, but there’s not exactly much of a dating pool for me here.”

“I… suppose not…” Aura winced. “I don’t want you to be lonely, and I know that’s definitely something to consider…” She almost asked him again about Sam.  The younger man had needed surgery for his broken leg and had spent a few days in the hospital. She knew that Aaron had gone to see him. Oh, Aaron had been running other errands in Zuzu City that day, setting up his temporary apartment in the city and making final arrangements for his Summer and Fall jobs, but Jodi had casually mentioned to Caroline, who’d told Robin, who’d told Harvey that Aaron had visited Sam for a couple of hours that day, though what they’d talked about had been anyone’s guess.

“…You and Harvey should have some time alone.  And I need to find someone to be alone with too, ya know?” Aaron scuffed the dirt at his feet. “I’ve been chaste the whole time I’ve been here and its starting to wear on me.”

Ah, fuck it.

“…And you’re sure there’s no one here you’re interested in being alone with?” Aura asked pointedly.  Aaron scowled at her.

“He’s only twenty-one. I’m twenty-eight. I know that’s about the same age gap you and Harvey have, but… you’re both in your thirties and actually lived adult lives before you met.  Sam’s twenty-one going on about sixteen. I gotta make a clean break. He needs to recover over Summer and go off to college like he’s planned come Fall. Yoba knows he’s waited long enough while his old man was away. I’ll find someone uncomplicated to hook up with… which shouldn’t be a problem once I’m set up in the city. I’ll be fine.” He reached out and squeezed her shoulder.  “I’ll come back when I can to work on my cabin… maybe Kat can use it too when she comes to visit. And like I said… you and Harvey need to be alone for a while.”

“I suppose…” Aura sighed, glancing over her shoulder. She could see Harvey in the distance, a small figure in a green pullover walking around what had once been the fruit orchard.  His little apple tree sapling reigned in lone splendor there now, and Harvey looked after it daily.  A small gray dot followed at his ankles; Murphy had taken to following Harvey on his daily trips to the orchard. A fond smile tugged at her lips.

“…You gonna marry him?” Aaron asked.

Her smile grew a trifle. “Yeah.  I think so.” The question hadn’t surprised her, and answering had been easy, automatic.  “It really wasn’t that long ago that I told him I needed time, though… am I crazy?”

“I mean… you guys have been through a lot this year.” Aaron shrugged. “Yoba knows I’m no relationship expert.  But you know I like him, and I think he’s good for you.  You don’t need my blessing but if you want it, you got it.”

Aura nodded, surprisingly touched by his words.  “Well… thanks.” She couldn’t help the broad grin that spread across her face as her brother opened his arms and she stepped into his strong embrace, laughing as he picked her up briefly before setting her on her feet once more.
