It’s because they are real plants, they do grow and change color during different seasons and different environments. · For most succulents, they need more sun, more cold, less water, less rich soil to get beautiful stressed color. Cold and sun is most important. But like variegated titubans, dunce caps, they turn pink in summer under full sun. So it all depends. Here are some fun examples of #industrialdesign by Tony Elkington (@tony.elkington): Ceramic desktop planters with personality. I love these because they highlight the fact that many times the form of a product and the creativity of the designer is just as important (if not more important, in some cases) than the science or engineering behind the product. I'm not saying that these planters try to defy the laws of physics (unless that was Tony's intent... but that's unlikely), nor am I implying that creative design trumps the choice of proper material and engineering. These wouldn't be planters if we used some kind of porous substance rather than ceramics. And they wouldn’t really work well if they weren’t properly balanced based on the potential weight of the expected plants to be installed in the planters. Sometimes to make products interesting, though, you have to tip the scale of design aesthetic and feasible engineering towards the side of design to make the product interesting and desirable. This design emphasizes the importance of having some level of knowledge of "what is physically possible" when you are an industrial designer or architect. Out of the box (out of the planter?) thinking works well to a certain extent, but if the box implodes (or of the planter tips over) as a result of your design, you job might not be long for this world. Tony took known factors—ceramic is a nice looking material that is also non-porous, and the fact that people like having cute or cool looking objects on their desk—and designed interesting products based on those parameters. I tried to choose which planter I like the best, but they all have their merits… probably just the simple standing one on the right side. Which one does everyone else like?
