What Is The City Hiding
Filmed and Edited by Jonathan Frey
Art Direction by Stuart Hyatt
Music by Field Works
Filmed along Pogue’s Run in Indianapolis, an urban waterway that descends into and transects the city’s underworld.
Stuart Hyatt is a Grammy-nominated artist and musician. He creates interdisciplinary creative projects about our complicated relationship with the natural world. Hyatt is the producer of Field Works, the collaborative series in which experimental musicians transform audio field recordings into music.
Each album follows a rigorous conceptual framework - incorporating scientific data and site-based field work - but emerges as a simple, emotionally evocative musical story. This body of work is released via the Brooklyn-based record label Temporary Residence and published by the Dutch imprint Jap Sam Books.
As a National Geographic Explorer, Hyatt is expanding this music into new frequencies: producing records using the ultrasonic echolocations of endangered bats and the infrasonic rumblings of seismic activity.
Hyatt is also a songwriter and producer of left field pop and folk music, producing work with amateur community participants and non-professionals. He is a member of M12 Studio, the arts collective known for projects that explore public space, rural cultures and landscapes. He works independently via commission as Stuart Hyatt Studio, LLC. He lives in Indianapolis with his family.
I create albums, books, exhibitions, and live performances that seek to bring new audiences into uncharted sonic territories, encouraging a closer listen and more thoughtful attention to the voice of a fragile planet.
Happy Birthday Stuart Tyson Kindell aka Billy Zoom, American guitarist and co-founder of the punk rock band X, born on this day in 1948, Savanna, Illinois, US.
A playlist from Dream's perspective with all the wrought emotions that brings.
They are sleepy songs, songs about dreams and songs that are themetically melancholic and otherworldly. It's a playlist about descending, not necessarily on your own volition, to experience what you need to learn. There are spoken word samples, discordant loops and the feeling of being underwater, in caves and in coal pits.
It's a vain attempt to share the music and artists I love but also share feelings and all The Feels (with a capital F).
Daydream: Radiohead
"Dreamers, they never learn. Beyond the the point, of no return"
Formation 1: Field Works, Stuart Hyatt
Spoken word sample-descending into a cave
Death Dream-Frightened Rabbit (TW: mentions of Suicide)
This is a very person choice for me as Scott Hutichison was an incredible Scottish lyricist who is deeply missed by the Scottish indie community and I want to encourage anyone who doesn't know Frightened Rabbit to give them a further listen.
Could never be Heaven-Brand New
"Can you speak my secret name and fix me?"
The 2nd verse and bridge are a wonderfully conceptualised ode to dreams
The Pit-Public Service Broadcasting
I like to imagine this song as a nightmare about coalpits and confinement....plus the song slaps so...
Song to the Siren-This Mortal Coil
eighties goth at its finest and most thrilling
Smother-Daughter
"I'm a foolish, fragile spine. I want all that is not mine. I want him, but we're not right"
Twinkling-Black Wing
"No lie: You're the only I care about, the only one I hope stays alive. And I'll die before I ever say those words aloud."
We woke up at 5 for our 6am taxi drive to Gatwick to travel to our honeymoon destination - MEXICO, we were admittedly a little weary eyed but we had some some good chat from the taxi driver.
When we got to Gatwick we checked in with BA and asked whether there were any upgrades available, we were already flying premium economy but as it was our Honeymoon we thought it was worth checking out. Lucky for us there were two seats in Business available at a fraction of the price they were when we had booked up so Stuart made the decision that we’d have them. Excitement levels rose even further as we made our way to the BA premium lounge for some free drinks and breakfast! We had an hour or so to kill so had our fill of food and booze and watched a few planes take off.
When it was time to board we made our way over to the gate and waited just a few minutes before we were directed LEFT instead of right on the plane to find our seats. What a treat. On our seats we found a comfort pack of a White Company pillow and blanket and wash bag with many luscious White Company goodies. We were then given a hot towel to freshen up with and a glass of champagne to sip on whilst everyone else boarded.
We had two meals on the flight all ordered from a proper menu and many drinks all served on china and in real glasses. We had our lunch and then settled down for a few hours kip, the electric chair folded down to a flat bed and met the footrest at the end and it was actually incredibly comfortable. We both kept just looking at eachother grinning and feeling so lucky that we could start off our honeymoon in this way, although I’ve warned Stuart that I will now expect this luxury every time we fly however unrealistic I know this is.
When we landed in Mexico it was about 5pm local time and we had to wait for what seemed an eternity for our luggage to arrive. I had bought Stuart some air tags for Christmas to put in our suitcases and when we checked their locations they said my suitcase was at Gatwick and Stuart’s was in the Gulf of Mexico, luckily they were just a shit present and did eventually arrive on the luggage belt. We made our way outside to find our transfer to the hotel. Rolando was our driver and he had a lovely icebox on board full of drinks, Stuart lapped up a corona and me being a basic dehydrated B had a bottle of water.
When we got to the hotel we were greeted with a hot towel and escorted to the ‘preferred’ check in which we knew from previous experiences was a members club of Hyatt so we exchanged a look of ‘wtf’. We had booked a standard room and it turned out somewhere down the line we had been upgraded to a ‘preferred’ member and our room had been upgraded to an ocean view suite with a bath on the balcony! We were not about to correct anyone as it meant we were now allowed access to a lot more amenities including a rooftop pool and bar with an amazing view of the coast. Our bellboy Sebastian escorted us to our room and ran through everything which was all control through a tablet, even 24hr room service which had its own hatch incase you didn’t want to make eye contact with your feast provider.
Once checked in we had half an hour turnaround before we attended our pre-booked teppanyaki experience in the Japanese restaurant Suki on site, we were supposed to book this on site but we panicked that we would miss out so made special arrangements the week before so that we guaranteed our spot here. This was included in our all inclusive package and what an experience it was, 6 courses of Japanese delights and an immersive experience of them being cooked before our eyes. We’re still adjusting to the fact that we don’t have a bill to settle at the end of this and keep looking at eachother saying ‘this is amazing, I can’t believe we’re here’. After our meal we explored the resort to see what we wanted to do the following day and made our way back to the room to unpack. What a surreal day but I’m counting my blessings I have married such a wonderful and generous boy who finds such excitement in making me happy and providing these amazing experiences for us to enjoy.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mary Ann (Blom) Berry. To so many, she was a skilled caregiver, a caring friend, and a loyal supporter. To us, she was mom, grandma, sister, and Aunt Hon. She peacefully went to the Lord on May 13 at the age of 81.
Her memory and legacy will live on through those who loved her, including her children, Michael (Cindi) Berry, Kristin (Brian) Kertin, and Karen (Sean) Gardner; her grandchildren, Justin Berry, Madison Kertin, Andrew Berry, Katelyn Kertin, Joseph Gardner, and Ryan Gardner; her brother, Wayne (Susan) Blom; her nephews, Jason Blom and Brian (Michelle) Blom; her great nephew and niece, Lincoln Blom and Monroe Blom; and many extended relatives, including cousins, Margaret Iles, David (Katriya) Carlson, Donald (Sherry) Blom, Doug (Jan) Blom, Richard (Martha) Blom, Daniel (Jeanne) Blom, Jerry (Lorraine) Hyatt, Becky (Johnny) Long, Laura (Troy) Fraebel. Katherine (Hans) Crump-Wiesner, Judith (Vincent) Fala, Margaret Ann Rutledge (G. Stuart Ackman), Albert Turner Rutledge (Anne Marie Carry), and Martha Holden Rutledge (Richard Young). She is preceded in death by her father, Grant Blom, and her mother, Marian Blom.
Mary Ann was born on November 25, 1941, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and was raised in Terre Haute, Indiana. She lived many places throughout the United States, but spent her retirement years in Noblesville, Indiana.
Mary Ann built a life that was centered in her faith, dedicated to service, and committed to her loved ones.
She grew up attending Bible Center Church in Terre Haute where she established friendships at a young age that continued into her adult years as they attended nursing school together at West Suburban College of Nursing in Oak Park, Illinois. These friendships remained to be some of the most valued relationships in her life up until her passing.
After graduating from nursing school in 1962 she briefly taught younger students at West Suburban before pursuing her Bachelor of Science from Bob Jones University. At Bob Jones, she met, and later married, Herbert Berry. Together, they had three children.
She poured her heart into service as a nurse. Early on, she served as a missionary in South Korea, supporting an orphanage and helping to place babies into loving homes. Her nursing career spanned 40 years, including 15 years with the VA in Marion, Indiana. Even in her retirement, she continued working in the healthcare sector part-time with Sunrise Senior Living in Carmel, Indiana until she died – an experience that, in her words, was the best job she ever had.
A lifelong Christian, she regularly participated in prayer circles, bible studies, peer ministry, and as a member of the alter guild. She was an active member of Spirit of Joy Church in Indianapolis, Indiana and a regular volunteer at The Sharing Place.
She was dedicated to her family – dog sitting (even though she didn't particularly like dogs), attending her grandchildren's sporting events, and traveling many miles to help with her children's various moves and home projects.
In addition to her commitment to the church, volunteerism, work, and family – she loved spending time on her hobbies, particularly decorating her home, sewing for children and grandchildren, and tending to her garden.
When we celebrated Mary Ann's 80th birthday in 2021 or attended her Blom family reunion that was 70 years in the making last year, we certainly thought she had decades left to live. Though Mary Ann's earthly life ended earlier than we expected, we know she lived it to the fullest and is now in the heavenly home God has promised.
A Celebration of Eternal Life for Mary Ann will be held at Spirit of Joy Church (3535 Kessler Blvd E Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46220) on May 18 at 1:00pm with visitation immediately preceding, beginning at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in her memory to one of Mary Ann's causes: The Sharing Place (through Lutheran Child and Family Services), Spirit of Joy Church, or Compassion International.
Every Christmas we do something a bit unique that represents and challenges our studio's diverse styles and skills. This time we have turned to our new dedicated 2D animation studio who have created something very special.
The first 2D #BZshorts film is directed by People and Talent Coordinator, Katie Gascoyne. Our commitment to pioneering new talent and giving opportunities to ALL staff is at the heart of the shorts program. This year, there was a blind pitch where the whole company was invited to pitch an idea for the music video to Scouting for Girl’s Christmas single. Specifically, the brief asked for an “odd couple.” Katie won the blind pitch with a heart-warming pairing between Dan, a living gingerbread man, and his human girlfriend, Mandy.

He has been also accused of physical assault over a dozen times over the years. He was charged with four counts of rape and physical assault against four women in June 2020.

Recently Los Angeles judge declared on Tuesday that porn star Ron Jeremy is mentally incompetent to stand trial on dozens of counts of rape and physical assault.
The 69-year-old Jeremy will have a hearing next month on his admission to a state hospital. He has pleaded not guilty after being indicted by a grand jury on 34 counts of physical assault, including 12 counts of rape. He was in jail after his arrest in 2020 and did not attend the hearing.
“When he was arrested two years ago I said he would be found innocent of all charges,” Jeremy’s attorney Stuart Goldfarb said in an email. “Two years have passed and with the additional discovery I received I believed he would have have been found innocent. It is unfortunate due to mental condition he will not go to trial and have the the opportunity to clear his name.”

Field Works - Cedars - a concept album about forests, but in two distinct halves: Arabic poetry spoken and sung by Youmna Saba over ambient tracks, and poetry in English spoken by H.C. McEntire over Americana
The mystifying 9th album in the Field Works series, Cedars combines cosmic Americana with Western ambient and Middle Eastern influences. Delicate layers of pedal steel, banjo, oud, and hurdy-gurdy float atop looping guitar drones to create a soothing, atmospheric chamber where folk and electronic music coalesce. Set to Arabic and English poetry, the song cycle examines some of Earth’s most iconic and ancient forests, revealing our complicated relationship with the natural world. For this special dual-language release, Field Works producer Stuart Hyatt has assembled a supergroup of musicians, poets, and artists. The album is narrated by Youmna Saba and H.C. McEntire. Instrumentalists include Marisa Anderson, Fadi Tabbal, Dena El Saffar, Danny Paul Grody, Bob Hoffnar, Tomás Lozano, Nathan Bowles, Alex Roldan, Youmna Saba, and Stuart Hyatt. Renowned illustrator María Medem brings poems by Todd Fleming Davis and Youmna Saba to life in the accompanying full-color Risograph comic book; and longtime Field Works collaborators PRINTtEXT design the packaging.

A double LP of ambient soundscapes using the echolocations of the endangered Indiana bat as source material? Hell yes — why not? This year is already weird enough, let’s make it weirder (in a good way). Field Works is an ongoing project from Stuart Hyatt (you can read more about him in this excellent recent New York Times article) and for Ultrasonic, he’s gathered together an all-star cast — Mary Lattimore, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Noveller and Sarah Davachi among them. They all essentially duet with the strange chirps and whirs of bats, sometimes creating soothing sonic landscapes, sometimes finding high drama within these natural reverberations. From Dusk to Dawn, it all hangs together perfectly ...
Metaphonics. The Field Works Listener's Guide, Edited by Stuart Hyatt (TEAM Records), Janneane Blevins, and Benjamin Blevins, Jap Sam Books, Prinsenbeek, 2018. Realised in partnership with Temporary Residence, New York, NY. Graphic Design: PRINTtEXT
Stuart Hyatt and Eluvium chase the Indiana bat on Field Works’ graceful “Dusk Tempi”. The composition is part of Ultrasonic, Hyatt’s eighth project as Field Works, due out May 1 via Temporary Residence Ltd.
The starting point for each composition on Ultrasonic, the eighth album in Stuart Hyatt's Field Works series, is the endangered Indiana bat. Hyatt has spent the past year following the bats, collecting field recordings that he then turned over to some of the world's best ambient musicians as part of an ambitious multi-disciplinary storytelling initiative funded by the IUPUI Arts & Humanities Institute and the National Geographic Society. The first of those compositions, premiering above, is the Eluvium collaboration "Dusk Tempi," a minimal piece that slowly folds in the bats' echolocations as Matthew Cooper's strings loop hypnotically in the foreground.
"Such an honor to be working with Eluvium again," Hyatt wrote in an email to The FADER. "'Dusk Tempi' is one of the most deeply evocative compositions I’ve ever heard from him, particularly the way the bats become instruments in their own right. Listen carefully — right at the 3:37 mark — as the bats’ plaintive calls take over. It just tears my heart open in the happiest way. I’ve spent the past year outside with my microphones chasing this endangered species through forest and field; I hope 'Dusk Tempi' brings the listener into that same magical world."
Ultrasonic is out on May 1 via Temporary Residence Ltd. On top of the Elivium collaboration, the album features contributions from Christina Vantzou, Sarah Davachi, Ben Lukas Boysen, Machinefabriek, Mary Lattimore, Felicia Atkinson, Noveller, Chihei Hatakeyama, John Also Bennett, Kelly Moran, Taylor Deupree, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Julien Marchal, and Player Piano. Each copy of the album will come with a printed copy of the 1973 Endangered Species Act. Pre-order the album here and find its full tracklist below.
