Agent Carter An Au Series
I haven’t posted this series in a while, but before I go away for a few days, I finished chapter 15! Only a small part is from the show...it kind of got away from me lol Enjoy!
Peggy's POV:
Its been over a week, and all ready I'm loosing my nerve; and I think Stephanie senses that. She starts to cry again and Daniel picks her up.
"Aw, come here little sunshine." He lifts her in the air and she starts to laugh an giggle. I look up from the newspaper and can't help but smile.
"She loves you so much, I should be jealous." Daniel looks at me and laughs.
"Nah, you don't need to do that. Does she anjo?" Steph gurgles again and tries to speak.
Over the span of this week and living with Daniel, I've heard him speak more Portuguese to her than normal, and she responds to it; or tries to. I can speak and write in four different languages, but Portuguese isn't one of them; but Daniel has been teaching me phrases here and there. From the way he talks to her I think her first word may not be in English. I look back down at the paper, but I can't stay focused enough and not look at Daniel. Hes soo good with Steph, a part of me wishes he were her father; but every time that thought occurs I try and squash it down. We're just friends and thats how it will stay. But I don't always want it too...
"Hey Peg....?"
"Hmm?"
"Look..." I look up and can't believe my eyes. Steph has grabbed and pulled Daniels shirt so hard shes ripped a piece of fabric off of it.
"Oh my God!" I get up off of the couch and touch his shirt. "I-I'm so sorry Daniel. I had no idea she was that strong yet..." "Its fine." He laughs gently. "I know who her dad is, remember? I doubt it if she'll ever not be stronger than everyone else her age." I shake my head and walk away. I grab him a new shirt and enter the living room again.
"Here." I say. "I still can't believe she did this..I was hoping it would take a least 4 years, not 4 months!" And we laugh. I take Steph from his hands and he starts to unbutton his shirt. "Oh! Uhm.." I look away. "We should probably get going. I need to drop her off with her sitters and then head to work."
"Oh, yeah..uh, right." He changes his shirt quickly and I turn back around; although it isn't quite buttoned all the way. His chest is very toned, and I'm taken back by it. Our eyes meet and I freeze. I know I should feel wrong for looking but...I don't. "I should, uh...probably get ready too. It would be best if we didn't show up at the same time."
"Yes, of course."I say quickly. I grab Stephanie's things and get ready to leave and then Daniel meets us at the door and says goodbye.
"Bye sunshine, I'll see you later." She reaches for him and starts to fuss, so he kisses Stephs cheek...and then mine. We both freeze this time. "I-I-I'm soo sorry, Peggy! I-I didn't mean to do that! I swear!" He backs away and raises his hands in the air, surrendering.
"Its alright, Daniel." I smile shyly. His eyes are still wide and hes still afraid of what hes done. "Daniel.." I laugh. He sighs but is still stiff. I reach over and embraced him. At first he tenses, and then reaches around and returns the favor. When I release him, hes almost completely relaxed. "Its okay, really. You don't have to worry about it. I know you didn't mean to."
"Good..." He sighs again. I take Steph and head to the Automatt. When we get there, Steph falls asleep and I eat breakfast while looking back at the newspaper. On the radio I hear the 'Captain America Adventure Program' and it infuriates me.
"Angie,  would you mind changing that?" I ask, annoyed.
"Oh you bet" She says as she changes the channel. And then repeats the lines in her own actors voice. "Much better, right?"
"Thrillingly realistic," I say. That damn radio show is as far from the truth as you can get. Angie looks over at Steph and plays with her for a few moments. I love seeing my daughter so happy, shes already surrounded by people who love her. And I fear she may be spoiled rotten when she gets older.
"You moving?" She says, knocking me out of my thoughts.
"Oh, yes. I, uhm... I lost me roommate." After I tell her this she tells me of her first roommate and her she abandoned Angie. She got engaged and married in less than a week, and left Angie alone with the apartment. "You think you know people." She laughs and looks at the places I've circled, and all but throws them away in the gutters. "Well if none of these will work then where do you suggest?"
"The girl from the hall from me just moved out, couldn't hack it I guess. She was always crying to her mother on the hall phone."
"Poor thing"
"Yeah, maybe the first couple of times." I chuckle. "Anyway. Its over on 63rd. But its real safe, lots of great girls. Plus I'd be your neighbor, so thats not nothing."She smiles.
"Oh thats a wonderful idea but I'd hate for you to grow tired of me." She looks at me with a side eyes.
"You don't strike me as the crying on the phone type, English" Well she isn't wrong. It is a lovely thought, but I look over and see Colleen's obituary and then at Steph, and I know it won't be possible. I like Angie, shes a good person and friend, I'd hate for her to meet her fate because of me.
"I don't know, Angie. It may not be possible." She looks at me puzzled. "Will they allow a baby into this apartment complex? Because if they don't then...I won't be able to live there."
"Well how much longer are you babysitting?" At first I was confused, then I remembered; I lied. I lied to everyone that Stephanie was my niece and I was watching her for my sister. No one can know shes my daughter, if they do they may find out who I am and who her father was and use that against me.
"I'm not sure...It may be some time. My,uhm, sister is still away and hasn't gotten back to me on when she'll return."
"Is there anywhere else she can go? That way shes taken care of and you get the apartment."
"I'm afraid not..." I look over at Steph and notice Daniels shirt piece is still in her hand. Shes kept it all morning and held it to her nose. She must like his scent, it makes her feel safe; and I can't agree with her more.
"Thats sucks," I hum in agreement. After a few minutes I finish my breakfast and say goodbye to Angie, and then make my way to Jarvis so he can watch her. The day goes by quickly and I pick up Steph and we head home to Daniel's apartment. Well not, home, home, but...well a place to stay. When we walk inside, I see movement in the kitchen. Mmm something smell delightful. I pick up Steph and carry her to the kitchen to see him.
"Daniel? What is that delicious smell in the-" I stop in my tracks. "Mr. Sousa?"
"Mrs. Carter? Can I help you with something?" He glances between me and the baby, and then our things on the couch.
"Oh, uhm..no. I-I was looking for Daniel, actually. Is he not here yet?" At first he says nothing, and looks at me suspiciously. Odd...
"He is, yes. Hes in his room...changing."
"Oh! Uhm, of course." For several moments the apartment is silent, and Mr. Sousa, thankfully, stops lingering. Did I do something wrong or offend him...? I sit down on the couch and hold Steph, but she doesn't want to calm down. I look through her bag and grab the cloth from Daniels shirt, and she holds onto it, tight, and waves it around. But it doesn't keep her calm for long. "Oh come here poppet." I set her down on my lap and bounce her, but she doesn't settle down. I don't want to shout with Mr. Sousa here...but I'm afraid I don't have a choice.
"Daniel!" I call for him. "Daniel!?" I notice Mr. Sousa peek out and asks what was wrong, but before I can answer, Daniel appears. Thank God.
"Peg? Whats wrong?"
"Someone is very adamant about seeing you." I stand up and hand her over.
"Aww, did sunshine want to see me? Huh?" He plays with her for a few minutes, and while I know his father is watching, I can't help be laugh. "Shes been like this all morning. And look." I point to her hand.
"Is that what I think it is?" he laughs.
"Yes! She refuses to let go of it. I gave it to her after we arrived, and she started to settle down. But once she realized it wasn't you..."
"She started to throw a fit!?" We laugh and she catches on. "You are a sassy little boss, aren't you anjo?" She giggles and snuggles closer to him. "Just like your mother."
"Oi!!" I shove him lightly and we laugh. Steph starts to bounce around and dance in his arms.
"Well look at that. Shes trying to dance!"
"Who is?" Mr. Sousa enters the room.
"Little Stephanie here, is trying to dance." She continues to bob around in he arms and giggle.
"I'm still sticking with my statement from this morning." I say.
"No." Daniel says.
"Yes."
"C'mon Peggy."
"Yes, Daniel! Look at her" I laugh. She leans over and tries to kiss his cheek. "Stephanie Marie Carter! You little traitor." I take her from him and she laughs again.
"I'm just too lovable, babies can't resist me."
"Who told you that lie, son?" I try not to, but I can't hold in my chuckle. I hadn't realized how long he had been watching, but it must have been long enough for his mood to change from standoffish to admiring.
"What? It true. Pete was like that when he was a baby, so was-"
"But that doesn't mean all babaies, Daniel." I laugh again and he glares at me.
"Not funny."
"Well of course it is. Even poppet agrees." She reaches for him again and its the cutest thing in the world. "I've only just got you back and you want nothing to do with me!" Daniel laughs.
"Dinners ready, if...you're both eating." I look back at Mr. Sousa, and then at Daniel; and the reality of the situation his me at once. I'm practically living with Daniel, unmarried, in no romantic relationship, with my child, and his father is unaware of this. But perhaps hes catching on...
"I'd hate to intrude. I don't want to intervene on you father-son dinner." His father tries to speak, but Daniel speaks first.
"Its fine, Peg. Beside, we already had plans for tonight remember? Pai just...showed up unexpectedly. You're not intervening." I nod my head and follow him to the table trying not to ask him what he was talking about. We never made any plans. Of course it was my night to make supper, but...there were no other plans made. What is going on? I don't ask him, though, instead I keep it to myself. We all eat and laugh and have a swell time, but Mr. Sousa, I've noticed, keeps looking at me. At first I thought it was just my imagination, not that I have much of one, but then I caught him several times. I'm not sure if Daniel's noticed, but its starting to make me uncomfortable; and this, he does notice.
"You okay, Peggy?" I look up at him and attempt to smile.
"Yes, Of course." I glance at his father and then back at Daniel, and thats when he notices somethings off. He nudges me leg under the table and smiles, comfortingly, and helps somewhat. Thankfully, everyone finishes and Mr. Sousa starts to leave. He and Daniel have a conversation at the door; but I don't listen. Instead I head off to Daniel's room and feed Steph.
Daniel's POV:
After I got home from work, I noticed my apartment door was unlocked. My first thought was Peggy's here early, then I realized she has to pick up the baby; now I'm worried. I reach for my gun and cautiously walked inside, but it was just Pai.
"Pai! What are you dong here?"I put my gun on the table and walked over to him. He said we haven't had dinner in a while and thats why he was here. I wouldn't mind so much if things weren't so complicated right now. I start to help him with dinner and thats when the joyful mood went down hill.
"So...how have things been with you, son?" I know where this is headed.
"What is it,Pai? You only ever ask me that question in that tone unless somethings bothering you." I set the table and hesitates at first.
"I...I wasn't snooping I swear. But..."Oh no. Peggy's stuff. "I noticed, when I was in your room, looking for the picture album you said you had, that there was... a baby's bassinet and women's clothing in there."
"If you have something to say, then please just do." I'm so done with this conversation already.
"Do you have a family that you've never told me about?" I turn to look at him, and hes upset.
"What? No. Of course not! Its not like that."
"Then what is it like, Daniel? Please explain to me why there are woman garments in your room with a bassinet and baby clothes!?" I look away, grab the counter, and sigh.
"Its not what you think, Pai." He looks at me, waiting. "Its-Its complicated." He laughs drily and crosses his arms. "look, she has nowhere to go right now. What did you expect me to do? Let her live on the street with a baby?"
"So you let a complete strange woman and her baby live in your apartment."
"She not strange...I've known her for over a year now."
"Who?"
"Mrs. Carter. From across the hall. Her roommate...is gone and she can't afford the place by herself and take care of the baby." I explain. He uncrosses his arms and leans on the counter. "I told her she can stay here till she finds a place. And she IS looking. Shes been looking for over a week now." He doesn't say anything after that. Instead he just cooks in silence.
I go to my room and change, and then several minutes later I hear Peggy screaming my name.Turns out is was just Steph wanting to play. She is the sweetest baby in the world, I love her so much. I wish she was mine...But I try not to think about that. I tell Peggy she can stay for dinner, and I know this makes Pai upset, but honestly? I don't care. I saw someone that needed help and I helped. Thats what I was raised to do. Through out dinner things seemed fine, but then I looked at Peggy and she seemed stressed; like something was bothering her. I asked her what was wrong, but she said it was nothing; then she kept looking at dad. So I know something is wrong. I don't know why Pai has a problem with Peggy, but I'm gonna find out. When dinner is over with I see Peg head to my room, probably to feed Steph, and then I head to the door with dad.
"I thought I asked you to be careful with her."
"What?"
"Shes only gonna bring you trouble, Daniel" I take a step back at look at him like hes crazy.
"Pai. What are you talking about? What trouble?"
"I just know things, okay. And she," He points the the bedroom, "isn't going make things easy for you."
"That makes no sense! Peggy's done nothing wrong."
"Its not about what shes done, Daniel. Its about who she really is and the father of that bebê.
"The father of- Pai, How do you even know that!?"
"Watch the film of Captain America during the war. Pay close attention to his compass. And then you'll understand why-"
"I know exactly who Steph's father is, Pai. And I also know the whole story. You don't. Peggy already told me everything and its not what you think it is." He looks at me, taken back. "And as for that compass? He stole her picture from a newspaper without her consent and she knew nothing about it. If anything she hated that he did that." Pai closes his and sighs."And as for trouble? She has none. Shes done nothing but be kind neighbor, great friend, and respectable guest."
"I-I had no idea."
"Yeah. I kinda put that together." He shakes his head and moves closer to the door.
"I'm sorry, Daniel. I didn't know you knew."
"Its fine, Pai, Just...Know that I know what I'm doing. Or did you forget what my career is? I know things and have ways to figure them out." He laughs at that. He apologizes again and then leaves. I hate that he thought that way of Peggy, but now I understand why she doesn't want anyone knowing the truth; because of this. People will think the same way my dad did, and i know that hurts her. "You can come out now. Hes gone." I say. I turn around and Peggy comes out of the kitchen; she was cleaning up the dishes.
"I-I didn't mean to-"
"Its fine, Peg. You're a spy. Its kind of a habit to listen in, and its not easy to break." She laughs.
"Still, I'm sorry."
"Its okay. I told him what he needed to hear. And of course, not everything, out of respect for you, but.. yeah."
"I appreciate that." She walks closer to me.
"Wheres Steph?"
"I put her down for bed. She was quite tired after she ate." I nod my head and look at her again. "I know you don't mind it, us being here, but after watching and listening to your father...I know we should be going soon. Before you say anything, Daniel, we have to. I may have found an apartment, but theres a problem."
"Whats the problem?" I crutch over to her and she looks down at the floor. "Peg? Whats the problem?"
"I... I can't take Steph with me." She finally looks up at me, and there are tears in her eyes. I reach out and wipe away the ones that already fell.
"Is there anywhere else? maybe-"
"Not really. No. Well, Stephs sitters offered me a room for us to stay in, but..I can't very well go on living from one friends home to another. It isn't right."
"And thats your only option? Nothing else?"
"Theres not. Everywhere I look won't work. My only plausible option is this...Hotel for women but..."
"You can't have a baby with you."
"Daniel I don't know what to do." She turns around and sits on the couch. "Your fathers right. I'll do nothing but cause more trouble if I stay. But I can't leave my daughter! I barely see her as it is, let alone let her live somewhere else. I have no family here and there is no where for us to go!" She buries her head in her hands and I lean over and place my arm around her shoulder.
"Its okay, Peg. We'll figure something out. You won't have to give her up or make her live anywhere else. I promise." She leans back and into me, laying her head on my shoulder, and nods. God this is so unfair, I hate that she has to go through this. I squeeze her shoulders and she looks up at me. I didn't think this through...Don't lean in, Daniel. Don't. Lean. In. She looks up into my eyes, and then glances at my lips, or at least I think she did. Am I still breathing? I think shes leaning in. Dammit. I turn away and she clears her throat. "I don't think its a bad idea."
"What isn't a bad idea?" She asks, leaning away.
"Staying with the sitters. I mean if the house is big enough." She takes a deep breath and lets it out. "If you don't want to stay there for too long, just let 'em know it'll be temporary and that you're looking for somewhere else in the mean time. Besides, its less of a distance you have to go for them to watch Steph while you're at work."
"You're right. Its just..." She stops mid sentence and shakes her head, as if laughing her thought off.
"What?" She shakes her head again. "Come one Peg, tell me."
"Its just that...I like being here, with you." Her voice is so low I can barley hear it. "I-I like that we get to see you everyday, and Steph acts as if she'll die if she doesn't see you the second she comes through that door." We laugh. "It feels good here, and I-I... I suppose I don't want that to end." Well I wasn't expect that much honesty.
"We still see each other at work." I say
"I know, but...Its not the same. Here we laugh more and more everyday. I've never felt this happy before. Not even as a child did I enjoy myself this much." She looks at me and smiles fondly. "But at work, we can't do that. We have to keep up a front and keep those parts of our lives separated." I sigh in defeat, not knowing what to say. "But once we move she'll see you less often, and I know that will break her little heart...and mine." I almost didn't here the last two words, and it takes me a minute to really understand what she said.
"Hey..." I try to get her to look at me but she refuses. I lean over and pull her in for a hug, and she doesn't let go. "We'll figure something out, Peg. I promise. I'll be apart of both of your lives as much as I can, and for as long as you want."
"So...an eternity?" She laughs.
"If thats what you want. Then yeah." I laugh this time. We break apart and she starts to head to bed.
"I'll talk it over with them, if they're serious about us staying with them for a while. At least until I can find something more permanent." I nod and she reaches over and kisses my cheek. "Goodnight, Daniel." I reach out and hold her hand for a second.
"Goodnight, Peggy."

Favorite Female Characters Meme
I was tagged by @pyropelove413
Rules: list ten of your favorite female characters from different fandoms, then tag ten people!
1. Terezi Pyrope from Homestuck
I have so much love for this dragon lawyer lady. I developed depression around the same time as she did, on the meteor, and her experience was a huge source of comfort for me. Plus, I just enjoy seeing a girl character who is shown as smart and confident and deeply flawed, but still a hero, rather than a villain or plucky love interest.
2. Midna from Legend of Zelda
I very much adore her for similar reasons. I just really like girls with shit-eating grins, fuzzy codes of ethics, and sharp tongues, I suppose. Plus, I love how Midna went from being chiefly concerned with her own kingdom, to being terribly emotionally attached to Zelda and Link. Midna is the embodiment of that meme: “You have befriended X. X will now die for you.”
3. Hiroko Katsuki from Yuri!!! On Ice
Hiroko wins the award for best anime mother, hands down. She is such a bright, cheerful woman, but my favorite thing about her is how strongly she supports her son. I also love that, when a decorated five gold medalist shows up at her inn, she immediately starts calling him by the cutesy nickname Vicchan. For her, it doesn’t matter that Viktor is the most famous male ice skater in the world. His name is Vicchan now.
4. Ange from Princess Principal
Also called “Princess” by everyone in the show, Ange is a spectacular character who has had it hard since day one. Born in poverty, and then inexplicably being mistaken for the true princess, Ange has to teach herself to read, write, play the piano, along with many, many other skills a royal is expected to have. At first it was just out of neccesity, but later Ange does it because she wants to fix the broken kingdom. Ange’s brilliance and work ethic are only half of her greatness, though. Ange is perpetually kinder and more compassionate than all the other characters, making her the heart as well as the brains of the group.
5. Pearl from Steven Universe
Deeply and hilariously flawed, I can emphasize a lot with Pearl. Her need to be in control, her pride, and her air of superiority are all traits that are generally demonized in female characters. But while Pearl is prone to doing some pretty bad stuff, she never stops being relatable or lovable. I always want the best for her, and I love watching her grow and learn to deal with her grief in healthier ways.
6. Sakura from Fire Emblem: Fates
I know it’s bad to pick favorites, but Sakura is my favorite of all of Corrin’s nine siblings. Not only is she a powerhouse after her class upgrade, she is a sweet, compassionate girl who struggles with social anxiety. It is always so rewarding to see her stepping out of her shell. Her support conversations are always a delight to read, and honestly, I hardly ever go into battle without her. (Also I paired her with Kaden, and her relationship to her daughter Selkie is absolutely too adorable.)
7. Rachel Amber from Life is Strange: Before the Storm
Honestly, I could put any female character from this game on this list. Kate, Max, Chloe, Steph, even Victoria... they are all precious to me. But Rachel is a special girl. She reminds me of a friend I used to have. Rachel is chaos incarnate, always restless, always striving for her best, always longing for adventure. There is something deeply human in Rachel’s insatiable need for something, anything, beyond the ordinary and familiar. She is the type of girl you can love from afar, but who will never belong to any one place or person, and so you have to appreciate every second she allows you entrance to her heart. I’m so excited to see where her story goes.
8. Valencia Maria Perez from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
I’ve definitely ranted about this lovely lady before, but I will happily do so again. Valencia is first portrayed as the mean girl, the Regina George of the show. She is cold and self-centered, humorless and deeply distrustful of other women. However, the show makes it impossible for the viewer to hate her — Valencia is just too sympathetic. You can’t help but feel for her, when Rebecca tries repeatedly (and eventually succeeds) to steal her boyfriend from her. Even after Rebecca repeatedly sabetages her life, Valencia keeps returning to Rebecca, and even helps Rebecca plan her wedding to her own ex-boyfriend.
9. Joan Watson from Elementary
I absolutely love this show for many, many reasons, and Joan is at least three of those. Like most Watson’s, she is meant to be the heart to Sherlock’s brains. And Joan is definitely that: she is shown doing charity work, especially with people who are homeless and/or suffering from mental illness and/or drug abuse. But just because Joan is a kind character doesn’t mean she isn’t smart. Her brilliance is second only to Sherlock’s, and that’s probably only due to the fact that he’s been a detective longer than her. Joan is wonderfully written, a character that you can always rely on to be the voice of reason. She is Sherlock’s most treasured person in the world for a reason.
10. Peggy Carter from the Marvel Universe
Peggy deserves more than she got. She really was the best written female character in any Marvel movie. Her tenacity, wit, and dedication to justice made her my favorite superhero, even though she didn’t even have any special powers. Even with her flaws, Peggy never stopped being lovable. She was the best thing to happen to the Marvel universe, and I will never stop being bitter over the Agent Carter tv series being cancelled.
Thank you Rez for tagging me! That was fun

I think the most interesting this to talk about in lieu of "Stephanie Grace Rogers" vs. "Steven Grant Rogers" is that Steph never would have gotten to be Captain America the War Bonds Boy (though in this case girl). Despite her strength, her cunning, her compassion, the Senator would have loved the idea of Captain America, but damn Dr. Erskine and his choice. We'll get this All-American Average GI Joe to be the face, you can be a chorus girl, Stephie. So she's trying to pick up steps she never learnt (even when Bucky tried to teach her, it was a disaster). And the other girls loathe her until she pops the front six teeth out of the first guy to touch them wrong. Then they're spending all their time with Steph cause she might not dance too well, but she's a regular old hero to them. So three nights a week she watches a man pretend to do what she was mad to do. He socks "old Adolf on the jaw" on-stage, then she knees him in the groin backstage when six beers make him start to lose sight of what Bridget's "no! stop!" really means. But she's tough it through because everyone is doing their part. And it's fine until the 107th is missing the one thing she's been behaving for most. So because Bucky took all the stupid with him, she'll take the guts. So with her own helmet, she takes "Captain America's" shield, Howard's plane, and Agent Carter's help and flies over German lines to get her boy back. When she tells the to-be Commandoes that she's knocked out Hitler over 300 times, the anger of the truth is enough to endear them to her side. Bucky thinks he's hallucinating when he sees her there, bright-eyed and thick breasted as she is in another woman's bomber jacket. But he knows saying that he remembered her shorter will keep from turning this rescue into a fight. Even though he's ready to clock her when she says she joined the army. Stephanie Rogers never got to be Captain America the dancing monkey, but she drags that title into the sun as Captain Stephanie Grace "America" Rogers the war hero from the angry chorus line dancer they told her she had to be.

The NBA Is Softer Than Baby Thighs
LeBron James whined and whined about Draymond Green calling him the B-Word and retaliating against him, leading to a Game 5 suspension. Whats become of the L? “>
This past week, lost amid the miasma of Crying Jordan memes, Lil B hexes, and our collective clowning of Steph Currys Air Nurse 1swhich, lets be honest, had it comingcame the following oh-so-crucial development: LeBron James, a 6-foot-8, 250-pound athletic specimen the likes of which the world has never seen, was branded a bitch by two parties.
One was Golden State Warriors crotch enforcer Draymond Green.
The other was Smash Mouth.
Yes, that Smash Mouth: The group behind the theme song from Shrek (which they are apparently very defensive about). The band whose lead singer, with his wraparound shades and regrettable facial hair, resembles a cross between Guy Fieri and Chaz Bono. So what on Gods green earth emboldened a 90s footnote to question the masculinity of His Highness King James?
It began with a single step. Late in the Cleveland Cavaliers 108-97 loss to the Warriors in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, James got tangled up with Green, who fell to the floor. So James attempted the infamous step-over: whereby one player steps over another to shame them. Its not exactly J.R. Smith tweeting a photo of your ex-girlfriends booty, but a power move nonethelessand one that Jamess coach, Tyronn Lue, is all too familiar with, having been on the receiving end of the most notorious step-over in history: post-crossover, in front of his teams bench, during the 2001 NBA Finals, courtesy of Allen Iverson. It was, with the exception of Vince Carters dunk over Frederic Weisyou know, the beanpole Frenchman the Knicks drafted over local boy Ron Artestthe most embarrassing basketball moment of the early aughts. James tried that on Green, and it didnt go so well. His groin connected with Greens neck, so the Warrior delivered a shot to Jamess junk, prompting the two to get in each others faces.
After the game, TNT analyst Charles Barkley commended a chortling Green for retaliating, saying, At least I know he couldve played in our days, because let me tell you something: if a guy step over you, you got to get him. That is the most disrespectful thing that you could do to a player that you knocked down, is step over him. That tells me right there that he could have played back when we actually had real basketball toughness.
James reacted a bit differently: by unleashing a seven-minute locker room tirade and whining to ESPNs Chris Broussard about Green calling him a bitch.
He said Draymond Green called him the B-word and thats what got him going, said Broussard. And also, as many people have seen on the replays, Draymond tried to hit him in the private parts. And so those two things really upset LeBron James. He told me he cant remember being that upset on an NBA court. He said hes sure its probably happened before, but he cant remember the last time he was that upset. And mainly it was because of the name Draymond called him.
King James made such a fuss that he got Green suspended for Game 5, which the Cavaliers won handily. This is the new NBA, folks: LeBron James, the face of the league, complaining about being called a name to a reporter. Can you imagine Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant doing the same?
Earlier this year, Kobe himself lamented how the NBAs gone soft. Its more of a finesse game, Bryant said. Its more small ball, which, personally, I dont really care much for. I like kind of smash-mouth, old-school basketball because thats what I grew up watching. I also think its much, much less physical. Some of the flagrant fouls that I see called nowadays, it makes me nauseous. You cant touch a guy without it being a flagrant foul.
Kobes statement was echoed by his former teammate Shaquille ONeal, who said, Mike playing against Detroit and the Bad Boysthat was the real NBA, calling the current iteration of the league very soft, as well as Gary Payton, who tweeted, I could never play basketball in this soft era. All of my contract money would go toward fines.
These days, almost every time a player intentionally fouls someone hard, theyre hit with a flagrant foul and face a possible suspension, as well as a fine of up to $25,000. The play stoppages, between TV timeouts for ads and foul calls, are constant. Its gotten so preposterous that ESPN even has an in-house referee analyst, Steve Javie, who litigates fouls mid-game.
It didnt used to be this way. Players used to leave it all out on the floor, and games were more intense, more competitive. The stakes were higher. Were deprived of great moments, like in Game 2 of the 1985 Eastern Conference Semifinals when Pistons Bad Boy Bill Laimbeer threw a wild elbow that connected with Larry Birds chinonly to have Larry Legend come back and drop 31 points on him in the second half, his jersey stained with blood. Or that time Charles Oakley and Charles Barkley got into a brawl after a hard foul during a 1996 preseason game. Or the all-out war between Dennis Rodman and Alonzo Mourning in Game 4 of the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals.
In response to the oft-contentious 80s Pistons, aka the Bad Boys, the NBA instituted a number of rules changes that softened things up. In the 1988-89 season, they upped the number of referees from two to three, and in the 1990-91 season, penalties for flagrant fouls increased to two free throws and possession of the ball. Furthermore, if theres no apparent effort to play the ball, the player may be ejected which came with an automatic $250 fine.
Further rules changes were inspired by the 90s Knicks. With the start of the 1993 playoffs came a new rule: any player who throws a punch in a game will automatically be ejected, receive a one-game suspension, and be fined. Also, any player who leaves the bench area during a fight would be fined $2,500, and the team would be docked $5,000 for each of its players who leaves the bench area. In the 1994-95 season, the penalty for leaving the bench area during a fight was increased to an automatic one-game suspension and max $20,000 fine; hand-checking became illegal; and two flagrant fouls led to ejection.
The 2004 Malice in the Palacean ugly brawl where members of the Indiana Pacers, led by Ron Artest, went into the stands at Detroits Palace of Auburn Hills to fight unruly fansbrought even more changes. In 2005, teams began hiring former FBI agents to head their security, while fans booze was limited to 24 ounces and banned from being sold in the 4th quarter. If that werent enough, the league installed a mandatory dress code where players were forced to dress business casual before and after games. Nowadays, players treat the stroll from their vehicle to the locker room like a fashion runway.
Basketball boasts the most physically gifted athletes of any professional sport; sculpted bodies dancing through the air, crashing into one another. If the NBA hopes to remain must-see TV, however, it needs to rediscover the toughness and gamesmanship that made it so compelling in the first place. And the leagues best all-around player, LeBron James, must lead by example.

What We Learned: Is anybody better than the Maple Leafs?
Tumblr media
The Maple Leafs look awfully dangerous right now. (Maddie Meyer/Getty Images)
After literal years of speculation and expectation, John Tavares is a Toronto Maple Leaf.
This is a seismic shift in a division that already had two of the best teams in the league, and a conference that’s home to the winners of the last three Stanley Cups. Make no mistake, there hasn’t been a bigger free agent signing in the NHL since Zdeno Chara left Ottawa for Boston, and the impact Tavares will have in more or less immediately making the Leafs a contender is probably even greater.
Let’s even forget that Tavares left money on the table and took a true-hometown discount to sign with the Leafs, because that’s not material this season. And frankly, it probably isn’t material beyond that because if you look at that CapFriendly page, they dont have a huge amount of commitments beyond 2018-19. Yeah, their RFAs are gonna be expensive to re-sign, but they’ll have plenty of cap space to deal with most of those concerns, especially if you can get everyone to do the buy-in on the hometown discounts a la Golden State, as Steph Curry and Kevin Durant both took significantly less money to keep that super-team together.
Anyway, I’m just gonna say it: The Leafs might be the Cup favorites right now.
I know I know: “But what about that defense!” I get it, but look, the Leafs’ D situation probably took a pretty big step forward just with the loss of Roman Polak, let alone the continued maturation of, say, 23-year-olds Connor Carrick and Morgan Rielly. You can’t always trust Mike Babcock to do the best possible deployments of talent but if Nikita Zaitsev and Ron Hainsey get a decent reduction in their run-out and the actual most talented defenders on the team are all playing 20ish minutes, I can see this team taking a step toward being Cup-competitive in a way that it perhaps was not last season.
More to the point, though, the extent to which running Tavares-Matthews-Kadri-whoever down the middle is going to help this team make that step even bigger is significant. There’s an argument to be made that the Leafs shouldn’t even run out a fourth center at all, because those three guys combined deserve to be playing a combined 60 minutes a night. You wanna say it’s like 21 or 22 for Tavares versus top talent with plenty of time on the first unit, and some PK duties. About the same or a little less for Matthews against second lines, plus first-unit power play. Then the rest for Kadri on the second PP unit plus the kill.
Put another way, Matthews and Kadri combined to play only about 35 minutes a night last season and the Leafs got some pretty good mileage out of it, so add Tavares’s 21 or so to that and you only need a fourth-line center for about four minutes a night. What’s the point.
That gives you flexibility to either dress seven defensemen (which I think is smart for any team) or a kind of “flex” forward if necessary, at whatever position you need him.
The other issue for the Leafs, as mentioned above, is that the Atlantic might now have three of the five best teams in the league (the other two being Nashville and Winnipeg in the Central).
It’s reasonable to argue that because of the divisional playoff format, the Leafs’ path to the Cup is probably the most difficult in the league, and the same is true of both Boston and Tampa. To even get to the Eastern Conference Final, they will have to play two top-five teams. Not easy. And it’s not hard to love what both Boston and Tampa will ice this year. But can either of those teams even come close to matching up against that 1-2-3 down the middle? Nope.
Now, obviously both the Bolts and Bruins have better defenses, but the Penguins and Capitals both had kinda middling defenses and won the Cup. More to the point, the Leafs will probably be spending like 55 percent of the game in the attacking end so to the extent that defense matters in the playoffs, they’re going to use their guys to retrieve the puck and stretch the ice rather than actually do as much stay-at-home stuff except situationally.
It’s fair to say that neither Nikita Zaitsev (and yikes that’s not a good contract) or Ron Hainsey (also not a good contract but a less-bad one certainly) won’t be the guys who can do that but you gotta play to your strengths and Babcock probably won’t be allowed to play 22 minutes a night anymore. Or at least, you’d hope so.
Even if you don’t think the Leafs should be considered a prohibitive favorite to win the Cup — I’d argue they’re at least third as of this writing — you have to understand the extent to which they gain even more flexibility going forward. There are a lot of old guys whose contracts come off the books next summer and after 2019-20, and Kyle Dubas can probably find someone to take Matt Martin at $2.5 million given what Ryan Reaves is getting these days. That is, if you really need to free up that little money.
So what the Leafs have done here, is given themselves two No. 1 centers, and you really can’t overstate how valuable having two guys this good is in the NHL. Especially as Matthews and the various other very young wingers continue to mature. Even if you think Tavares starts declining hard in the back half of this contract, they’ve effectively purchased four or five years of extreme Cup-competitiveness.
The pressure’s on, sure, but it’s Toronto and the pressure’s always on, even when you suck. Tavares knew what he was signing up for, obviously, but he also knew what it takes to win from having suffered with the lack of it for so long.
There’s no better way to win the Cup than by getting a ton of talent and now, especially up front, pretty much no one in the league has as much as Toronto.
What We Learned
Anaheim Ducks: When you have a roster this good, you gotta stand pat!
Arizona Coyotes: Adding a guy like Grabner, who’s gonna be 31 on Oct. 5, is something to watch because he’s a speed guy and it’s hard to maintain speed when you’re old and stuff like that. Three years is a lot even if you think his poor career underlyings are overshadowed by his ability to create chances on the rush.
Boston Bruins: I like Jaro Halak as a backup to Tuukka Rask a lot, in theory, but the Bruins’ first few moves of the free agency period were… adding Islanders and Hurricanes. Maybe not the best strategy.
Buffalo Sabres: The Sabres added Carter Hutton as their backup, giving them three Lowell guys for next season. Please note the 2017 Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins also had three Lowell guys. Might not be a coincidence.
Calgary Flames: The Flames really seem to have improved their forward depth, which was always their big problem, but that goaltending situation ain’t getting better. Not sure what’s gonna happen here but I’m not optimistic either.
Carolina Hurricanes: Petr Mrazek getting another chance as a potential 1b with the Hurricanes is a relatively safe bet. And if it doesn’t work out, well, it’s not like this club isn’t familiar with bad goaltending.
Chicago: Giving Cam Ward a full no-trade is redundant. Cam Ward’s save percentage is a no-trade. But hey, if you get a chance to add a guy who is a 20-year-old plus a 19-year-old in 39-year-old Chris Kunitz, that’s the kind of youth movement this team needs.
Colorado Avalanche: Looks like the Avs were all about adding okayish depth guys like Ian Cole and Matt Calvert and that’s fine, if you ask me! Not sure they can count on another playoff appearance with this roster as-is but I guess MacKinnon could have another titanic year.
Columbus Blue Jackets: Little happening for Columbus at the start of July here. Wonder if they’re waiting for some movement with Panarin or something.
Dallas Stars: Intriguing add in Val Nichushkin. Be interested to see what he brings to the table. But here’s something that’s more interesting: How did Roman Polak get a raise?
Detroit Red Wings: The Red Wings adding all these veterans on short-term deals is like, “Well, who cares because it’s one year and they can probably trade them”
Edmonton Oilers: Tobias Rieder is an interesting player. I’m saying “interesting” a lot today but it’s this wasn’t a great UFA class and guys who Have Upside or are otherwise in the Cody Franson All-Stars group of guys whose underlyings make them seem better than the eye test or their scoring numbers do. The deal here is a pretty good gamble, though.
Florida Panthers: I think Michael Hutchinson probably has something to add for this team. I don’t know how much that actually helps in terms of making them any good, but I’m still a bit of a believer.
Los Angeles Kings: I’m gonna have a Kings take in the next day or two on here but this Drew Doughty contract, hoo boy. He’ll be 30-plus for all but like 2 of its 96 months. Way too much money.
Minnesota Wild: Adding a bunch of Leadership guys is gonna be what gets this team over the top –  just kidding.
Montreal Canadiens: That’s a really nice gamble on Xavier Ouellet. I like that deal a ton as a bet on a guy who posted good underlyings with a crap team. He might be able to do that again this season!
Nashville Predators: Yeah they just didn’t need to do anything, so not doing anything of note in the past week is totally reasonable.
New Jersey Devils: An Eddie Lack bounce-back season would be nice but I’m not holding my breath.
New York Islanders: The speed with which Islanders fans went from Needing Tavares to saying, “Actually he’s not even as good as Mat Barzal and the kids will add more than enough goals to make up for his absence.” Deluded.
New York Rangers: Nothing worth doing for a team in their position, so have fun out there.
Ottawa Senators: The revelation in the Ottawa media that the Senators are almost a quarter of a billion dollars in debt is… something else. I guess I’m not surprised but how is it that much? That seems impossible.
Philadelphia Flyers: That James van Riemsdyk contract is defensible but I’m not sure where this team thinks it’s headed. They’re trading Wayne Simmonds real soon here. Maybe it already happened by the time you read this.
Pittsburgh Penguins: The Jack Johnson contract is instantly one of the absolute worst in the league. It’s indescribably bad. Five years for a healthy-scratched a guy who will be three months from his 32nd birthday at the start of the season is, like, what the hell man.
San Jose Sharks: Now it seems like freeing up all that cap space was maybe not advisable. Missed out on Kovalchuk and missed out on Tavares, the latter despite reportedly bidding an extra $2 million AAV per year. Anyway, that’s too much money for Logan Couture.
St. Louis Blues: I pretty much like both David Perron and Tyler Bozak as middle-six guys and I think the money is one of those things that isn’t avoidable. However, I’m not sure where these adds get a team like this, that’s firmly third-best in its own division on a real good day.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Good price for Ryan McDonagh even if he’ll be 30 when the deal starts. Hard to be cynical about this deal for now though, but they might have some more irons in the fire for a brand-name talent (via trade, obviously), and that’s scary.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Underrated aspect of this is Dubas stealing a franchise player from Lamoriello. Very funny, to me.
Vancouver Canucks: I mean if the price of adding Antoine Roussel and Jay Beagle (a combined 12 goals and 32 assists last year) is four years and $6 million, well, you gotta do it.
Vegas Golden Knights: I have to say I literally laughed out loud at the Ryan Reaves contract. I can’t wrap my head around that one. He’s terrible. Like the Stastny deal though.
Washington Capitals: I love that Michal Kempny deal. He was a top-pairing guy for the Cup run and got just $2.5 million for five years. Not bad at all.
Winnipeg Jets: Sucks to clear a bunch of cap space to sign someone and then have him go to the team that beat you in the Conference Final. But hey, that’s hockey baby!!!!
Gold Star Award
Tavares is getting so much of his $77 million in bonuses. Hilarious.
Minus of the Weekend
Just because the cap went up a lot doesn’t mean you have to give fourth-line guys $2 million. Just saying.

Sixers Draft Prospects: Wendell Carter Jr., Trae Young, Collin Sexton
Need a break from the Donald Trump and Eagles stuff? I hear you.
This is part two of our NBA draft preview. I wrote on Monday about Mikal Bridges, Miles Bridges, and Jevon Carter.
The consensus is that the Sixers should look for wing depth in the draft, a small forward type of player who can score a bit but also defends at a level consistent with how Brett Brown likes to play. That’s why the Bridges pair is ideal in my mind, and probably the reason why I started by previewing those guys.
But what happens if Mikal and Miles are gone by the time you pick at #10 overall? What happens if somebody else slides down the board, a top-eight talent who gives you a ton of value at a position you might not necessarily need? Do you draft the “best player available” or just plug whatever holes you think you have?
Here are a couple of those guys who are hovering in that 6-12 range and might still be there when the Sixers hit the clock:
Wendell Carter Jr. (Duke)
Carter is a 6’10”, 250 pound center who averaged 13 and 9 while being overshadowed by Marvin Bagley (and probably Grayson Allen’s antics) in Durham. He’s projected to go in the 6 to 10 range based on most of the mock drafts I’ve looked at. Some mocks have him going 7 to the Bulls with fellow big men Bagley, Mo Bamba, Jaren Jackson, and DeAndre Ayton coming off the board ahead of him.
Draft a center? What for?
Well the Sixers need a backup for Joel Embiid, because with Amir Johnson becoming a free agent and Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel long gone, you’re looking at Richaun Holmes and Jonah Bolden as the early options heading into next season. Are you ready to rock and roll with one of those guys? Holmes has defensive issues that caused Brett Brown to leave him on the bench and Bolden is a totally unproven commodity at this point.
So if the Sixers like what they have elsewhere on the floor and Carter is available at 10 overall, do you pull the trigger? You’re looking at an athletic guy with stretch-five potential who does some things similar to Embiid. For starters, he shot 41.3% on 46 three point attempts during his only year at Duke. He was a 56.1% finisher overall with a 62.8 true shooting percentage, so he was very efficient in college.
There’s a lot to like from his tape, with good movement around the court, the ability to find space, post up, knock down open shots, and also pass from the post as well:
With Embiid among the first to come off the floor in Brett Brown’s rotation, Carter would theoretically play a decent chunk of time with the first unit. Johnson, for example, spent 108 minutes with Simmons, Covington, Redick, and Saric this season, some of which was due to Embiid’s back-to-back situations, but a lot that was also due to rotational patterns.
As far as weaknesses, Carter is still very young, just 19 years old with one year of college basketball under his belt. There were some times where it looked like he had trouble getting up around the rim, sometimes getting blocked and sometimes not getting that power or lift when going up for a dunk or a putback. He doesn’t appear to be much of a runner or transitional player and sort of shuffles up the court the same way Embiid does. That gives him the ability to try that trailing three that Embiid loves, but he didn’t hit a ton of them last year. You also see some airballs in the film where it looks like he just rushes some mid-range and three point shots instead of moving the ball around. He also doesn’t really pull up off the bounce, but nobody on the Sixers does that well and I can’t imagine you’d want your 6’10” rookie center trying much of that anyway.
Defensively, it’s hard to get a true read on him. If you watched Duke later in the year, you probably saw Carter playing zone and not man. He doesn’t necessarily move laterally that well but he’s a good rim protector and blocks shots. He feels like he’ll be able to show more of his potential in the NBA, rather than being limited by his college system.
ESPN’s Mike Schmitz did a good film breakdown with Carter on set during the recent combine:
There were some Al Horford comparisons being thrown around during Carter’s Duke and combine performances. Elton Brand was another name, too. Those aren’t bad shouts at all, though experts seem to think that Carter’s measurables would restrict him to playing center in the NBA despite some of those stretch tendencies he’s displayed.
No, center isn’t necessarily the Sixers’ biggest need right now, but I think finding a backup for Embiid is one of the storylines that’s sort of flying under the radar.
Trae Young (Oklahoma)
A high usage, pure scorer, I watched a lot of him in the Big 12.
He’s Steph Curry in more ways than one, about one inch smaller and maybe 5-10 pounds lighter, but he’s got the same quick release and penchant for chucking it from deep that made me feel like I was watching Steph at Davidson all over again.
Really though, the thing that jumped out the most was that he’d do it in a variety of ways. It wasn’t just catch and shoot, or straight-line pull-ups, he’d find ways to unload when I wasn’t expecting it at all, not really wasting much motion at all and just requiring the slightest of windows to knock down any shot from any range.
Specifically, look at how stupid these two shots are:
He’s not just a distance shooter, though. He shows really nice touch on his floater and creates a ton of looks for teammates due to his gravity, finishing the season with 8.7 assists per game. That did come with turnover issues though, 5.2 per game, which I’d say is due to his incredibly high usage rate primarily. By the same token, he also drew a ton of fouls and really showed great ability to feel out contact and get whistles to go in his favor.
The question is how much of a fit he’d be in this Sixers system. Young handled the rock almost exclusively at Oklahoma and isn’t an off-ball player. He’d cede that to Ben Simmons, and the Sixers would certainly find a ton of open looks for him, but it’s just a totally different style than what he played in college. You’d often see him get a switch, then slow the game down and iso up against that mismatch. That’s not really the Sixers’ game, though you would have liked to see Simmons do more of it, especially in the Boston series.
The weaknesses are what you would expect from this type of player. Sometimes he’d force shots, try to do too much, and get sloppy with the ball. I watched him battle Big 12 defensive player of the year Jevon Carter in a pair of losses, and Young finished with these lines:
29 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 8 turnovers (8-22 shooting)
32 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 6 turnovers (10-20 shooting)
So he got his points, but his assists were way down and his turnovers were incredibly high with a full court press chasing him around the floor. There were some yuck possessions, like this one:
Trae Young has 30 points & 0 assists. Wonder how pic.twitter.com/sOJIIERLvx
— Howie (@45gotFAT) February 6, 2018
Young will be going up against some excellent perimeter defenders in the NBA, so there’s always the possibility that he struggles to navigate length and get his shots off against the highest level talent in the world.
On the defensive end, he obviously does not have elite physical tools. He’s similar to Curry in this way, too, and offenses will likely hunt mismatches to get him marked up on a bigger and more athletic player. He’s not tall and he’s got a short wingspan, so I could see opposing guards get shots up over him with ease. I don’t know if Brett Brown wants that type of player considering how much he emphasizes defensive intensity and versatility.
That’s pretty much it. It’s very straightforward. Young is projected to go in the 6-9 range, but if he’s sitting there at 10 you might have found your affordable shooting guard of the near future and can move on from JJ Redick and 22 million dollars a year.
It’s something to think about.
Collin Sexton (Alabama)
A point guard? What the hell for?
Well, maybe the Sixers lure LeBron or Paul George and feel fine with Markelle Fultz playing off the ball in the starting lineup alongside Simmons. Maybe the Sixers feel like Bolden is the guy to backup Embiid, or that they can find that player at #26 overall. That leaves T.J. McConnell on an expiring contract as your second unit ball handler, so you take a look at Sexton as a guy who can score the basketball and maybe inherit that backup PG role going forward.
I really like his game. He’s a hard-nosed dude who plays tough and finishes through contact at the rim, just a competitive guy overall. His handle is incredibly tight and he looks very polished on drives, doesn’t really flail around or put up some weak crap. He decides where he’s going and gets there. He sort of stays in this attack mode, which might fit the Sixers up-tempo and transitional style of play.
The stats:
He’s not a great three point shooter, just 33.6% at Alabama this season, though he did shoot 44.7% overall. That’s probably redundant considering the fact that the Sixers point guards already do not shoot the three ball that often (McConnell) or at all (Simmons). Sexton did, however, average 19 points per game on a variety of different shot types, so there’s a lot to start with.
I see Eric Bledsoe floating around there as an NBA comparison. Some people have said Russell Westbrook, which I don’t really see. He’s similarly bullish but doesn’t have the hops that Russ does, even if they do play the game in that same downhill fashion.
Here’s a good video of his matchup against Young in the non-conference portion of the schedule:
Sexton is a lead guard, so again, I think the Sixers are more than fine here, even if Fultz ends up being a bust. But, again, if Bridges and Bridges are gone, and you’re not in love with one of the centers or a guy like Lonnie Walker, where else do you go?  You at least do your homework for this 8-12 range, where Sexton is expected to fall.

Agent Carter An Au Series
So I’ve finished chapter 11.... and chapter 12 will be the crossover chapter! I’m so excited!. It will take some time to write it because I have to watch my dvds of the show and try to incorporate this story into it. I hope y’all enjoy this chapter!:) I look forward to writing more!!
Daniels POV:
Its been four months since Stephanie was born, and I gotta say, she is the sweetest kid ever. Shes adorable, without a doubt, smart, strong, and insanely happy. Even though shes only 4 months old, she punches like a kid I've never seen, which is something, and she actually tries to read when Peggy reads to her. Her eyes follow along to Peggy's voice and its like they're glued to the pages.  I think shes the cutest kid I've ever seen, not that I'd ever say that in front of my niece and nephews. Her hair has gotten darker, and curlier, but her eyes are a piercing blue. I think they might stay like that. I'm guessing her dad had blue eyes, because Peggy's are a blend of dark and light brown.
Today is Saturday, and Peggy and I have developed a routine of me cooking every Saturday and her on Sundays or Mondays, depending on my work schedule. Stephanie is currently sitting on the table, next to my plate, batting at my napkin. I take it and raise it up in the air to wiggle it; she bats at it some more like a cat. I look up and notice Peggy laughing.
"Whats so funny?" I ask.
"Nothing. You're just so good with her. She loves spending time with you." I couldn't fight the grin off of my face even if I tried.
"Yeah well, I've had practice. I've been around babies before, not everyone else had had the luxury or experience. That and I love to spend time with her too, don't I little miss?" She reaches for the napkin and takes it, then starts sucking on it. I distract her with the shining spoon and take it from her mouth, and then she turns up her tiny nose and grunts. God I love this kid. She continues to reach for the napkin as Peggy speaks.
"I guess thats true." She folds her hands in front of her and stares at Steph. "I know her father wouldn't have know the first thing to do. I once seen him hold a baby as if it were a grenade about to go off!" We laugh and the baby catches on, giggling with us. Peggy hardly ever talks about Stephanie's dad.
"They sometimes do blow up like bombs... All over your clothes."
"Oh good heavens don't remind me! She did that this morning and I had to change at least twice." Stephanie catches the napkin again and raises it in the air as a sign of victory. Victory over ruing her mothers clothes more like. She giggles and squirms around, and then Peggy takes her.
"Do you think her eyes are gonna stay like that? That glowing blue color."Peggy looks up at me, and her body tenses up.
"I'm not sure... If they do though, perhaps it will be the only thing she inherits from her father..." The last bit of her sentences was muttered, and I almost didn't hear it.
"Why do you say that?" Maybe I shouldn't have asked that. She tense up more and shakes her head.
"Say what?"
"That you hope her eye color is the only thing she gets from her dad..?" She closes her eyes and sighs. I don't think she meant to say it out loud. Stephanie drops the napkin and starts to grab Peggy's hair.
"I-Its uhm.. nothing."
"Peggy.." She avoids eye contact and tries to get Steph to stop pulling on her hair. "Peg? Whats wrong?"
"Nothing." She says too quickly. Over the past four months Peggy and I have gotten a lot closer. I've told her about my mom and how she died, my brother being tortured and how I was there, .. I even told her about my leg; well most of it. She told me more about her brother and how they argued right before he died, how she was engaged to this British officer guy and left him, and ... even talked about the death of Steph's father. She didn't go into a lot of details, but she did admit they weren't married and thats why she hated the name 'Mrs. Carter'. The boundaries that we have around each other are slim, and I hardly question myself around her anymore. So now its time to get personal, and hopefully I'm not breaking one of the few boundaries we have.
"Peg, do you remember, four months ago, the time when Steph wasn't nursing? And I told you how... I wasn't able to have my own anytime soon because of this" I pull out my crutch.
"Of course I do. I also remember telling you to never say the word that we agreed you'd never say."
"Right. But do you also remember, how you gave me a little pep talk about not letting things get to me? To open up to you and know that you'd be there even when the world wasn't?"
"Daniel... of course I remember. How could I forget?" She seems less tense and more relaxed now that the subject has been taken off of her.
"Okay, just keep that memory in mind."
"Why..?"
"Because I'm going to give you the same advice." Shes taken back by my statement and sets Stephanie on her lap.
"Why is that necessary?"
"Because... I want you to know that you can trust me and talk to me. You don't have to hold things back, Peggy. I won't judge you, you know that. I'm here to listen and help. Thats what friends do." She looks away from me as if thinking, and maybe a little upset. I knew I shouldn't have pushed. For several minutes we sit in almost complete silence. The only noise is Steph cooing and giggling. She starts to play with Peggy's necklace when Peggy starts to speak.
"Its ... complicated. I-... I've never really talked about it to anyone; about Stephanie's father." I nod my head and go along with whatever she has to say. I've already pushed her enough. "Its a very.. delicate... situation, and not one I'm proud of."
"What do you mean?"
"I loved her father, Daniel. Very much. He was a good man. He was... loyal, strong, brave, and...selfless. No matter what the consequences of his actions, he did everything in his power to save the innocent and capture the guilty. He never wanted to kill... He only wanted peace and to stop those that thought they were above the world; like bullies, he said." Her leg is starting to shake and I can see Steph bouncing up and down, giggling. "I loved him for it...but I wasn't in love with him." I knew Peggy cared about the guy, cause of course, they have a kid together. And every time I hear her talk about him, I close up; I feel like I'm being restricted, and my heart hurts. I shouldn't be jealous of a dead guy, but I was. I think  Stephanie is sensing Peggy's emotions, because now shes starting to fuss. I reach over and Peggy gives her to me. Normally if Peggy can't calm her down, I can. "He took advantage of me, Daniel. And I will never be able to  forgive him for it. But hes done so much good for this world, I could't help but name her after him."
"Took advantage of you?" I couldn't help myself, it just slipped out.
"I knew that Steve was interested in pursuing a.. less professional relationship with me. But I never batted an eye at him. Anytime he would try and flirt, I would simply laugh it off or walk away." She stops as the memories play in her mind, and she starts crying. Way to go Daniel...          "We were all playing cards in a pub, and in the end it was just the two of us. He kept ordering drinks and I got drunk... and I can't remember anything from the rest of that night. It wasn't until weeks later I discovered I was pregnant with Stephanie." We sit in silence for several seconds; I don't know what to say.
"I'm so sorry,Peggy." She tries to hide her face as she cries.
"He knew... he knew I didn't think of him that way, and yet he still...ugh, mmh" Shes on the verge of sobbing. I get up from my seat, Steph in one arm, come up behind Peggy, and embrace her. She grabs a hold of me and lets it all out. When she settles down she still holds onto  my arm. As I look down at her I can hear her sniffle. "I'm sorry..."
"You don't have anything to apologize for anything, Peg. Its not your fault." She sniffles some more and nods her head, her curls have loosened up from being upset. She leans back as much as she can into me, and then turns to me. Our eyes meet and I smile at her. Shes been  through a lot, and  I hope she knows I'm here. She takes my hand and kisses my palm. I'm still stunned by this, even though I shouldn't be. Over the last four months she has kissed my cheek several times, and my hand once when I injured it, not that thats relevant.
"Thank you."
"No need to thank me. I'll always be here Peggy, whenever you need me. I know you'll do the same."
"Right, sorry."
"Peg... You don't need to apologize either."
"Sorry." She closes her eyes and we both laugh, enjoying the moment we have now.
"Here, do you want her back?" She wipes her cheeks and shakes her head.
"No thats alright, you can hold her."
"You sure? I know you won't be able to see her for all day, for 5 days, all next week. Are you sure you don't want her back?" She looks at me lightly and starts to laugh.
"I'm sure, Daniel. I've had four months with her, all to myself. I'm alright with not holding her for several minutes. I'll live, I promise." Peggy starts working again next week and I know shes a little worried. When we had dinner last week, she told me she found a job at as a telephone operator, and that she wouldn't be working crazy hours so soon. I didn't know telephone operators had to work crazy hours, but I take her word for it, at least on that matter. The matter of not seeing Stephanie for at least 6 hours, is one I know she dreads. Shes right in saying shes had her to herself, everyday, for four months. But that same reason is why she could go insane; she'll miss her daughter. Steph isn't even my kid, but I hate going hours without seeing her, and when I come home? Seeing her is the best part of my day. I can only imagine what Peggy is going to go through when she has to leave her. Once Peggy starts working, I know our dinners will deplete in numbers, if they happen at all. All we can do, right now though, is enjoy our time together, and I'll be damned if I don't.
