Soooo... was anybody going to tell me about steeking or do I have to find out everything in my life on accident?

I'm planning on knitting a sweater with this lovely gradient yarn:

Asking around the internet, how to knit a sweater with a big gradient that stretches over the entire piece (torso and arms) in the same proportions, did not bring up any solution I was particularly excited with. But I stumbled upon steeking, which at this point looks like the only way, I could achieve what I have in mind. Pacing is key, so I will try it on something small first, before diving head first into 60 bucks worth of sweater yarn.

Does anyone have any experience with steeking on sweaters before I start? I saw a lot of cardigan front panel steeking and arm holes as well. But knitting the sweater in one piece and then cutting the sides free to sew the front and back together again? You know, like a poncho basically, but putting a few stitches inbetween the torso and arms to later cut the arms free and sew the sides back together to create a sweater. Please someone tell me they have done this before.

In Decmeber 2020, I knitted my first jumper, but I made it a bit too short for how I like jumpers, so I haven't worn it as much as I want to.

So I decided to turn it in to a cardigan!

I used a method called "steeking," which is where you knit something in the round, then stabilise the material on either side of the mid-point and just cut it!

I've done it before and thought it would work here, and well, it did :)

It's a bit early in the year for this cardigan to be worn out and about but if you know me IRL expect to see it come December!

Steek Week 2023

Hi everyone! We are happy and excited to announce that we will be hosting a Steek Week dedicated to the ship Steek (Stan x Tweek)! This rarepair is very dear to us so we hope you will join us in celebrating these two throughout the week!

I chose steek because I already had some headcanons in my head :D

- Okay listen they dyed their hair together. Tweek wanted to dye his hair but was too scared because he had no idea how to do it by himself & though he'd ruin his hair completely. So he wanted to go find one of these fancy salons and go there, but once he shared his idea with Stan he was like. Dude. There's no way you're doing that. Sooo Stan explained to Tweek that he's experienced and could help, and also how it's much cooler to do it in your boyfriend's house than at the expansive salon. Tweek agreed, but still was very scared. Then Stan decided to suggest they dye their hair together, which somehow made Tweek calmer. I'd imagine them either both dyeing their hair in bright colors OR Tweek in black and Stan in blond...

- One time Tweek's dad was very sick, so it was only Tweek and his mom who were able to work at the cafe. Obviously Tweek was very busy for an entire week, so Stan decided to volunteer to help him. What can go wrong, right? It was the day when Stan found out what Tweek is capable of. Stan couldn't keep up with him, not even close. Tweek managed to talk with customers, deal with things in the pantry, run his mom's errands and sometimes even help her with the coffee. Meanwhile Stan? All he could keep up with is helping Tweek with his "come and give" tasks and sometimes washing the dishes. And Stan was already pretty fucking exhausted! When the workday ended Stan was looking very tired, but Tweek? He was looking the same as he always does. The word "impressive" would not even be enough. Tho, Tweek couldn't stop thanking Stan, saying how much easier he made it for him. Stan couldn't really agree, considering how much work Tweek had done compared to him, but seeing Tweek happy was enough. (Would he do it again? Probably not)

- Ohhh I imagine them finding each other's troubles kinda relatable and because of that managing them perfectly. Tweek would listen to Stan's 2 AM vents, comfort him and talk to him in the morning. With Tweek himself...Like, at first Stan would try to "help" Tweek, but then he realized that there's not much you can do with his anxiety attacks, so instead of this he would also try to be extra cautious and observant when Tweek needs that. I CAN'T REALLY EXPLAIN IT, but Tweek would feel the relate and it'd comfort him a bit :(

I’m super happy with my Strange Brew by TinCanKnits. I used stranded patterns from the AlterKnit Stitch Dictionary and then decided to up the difficulty level by steeking it into a cardigan and doing intarsia in the round for the hands on the sleeve. (It’s your warning in case you don’t know I write true crime and thrillers.)
