I have been travelling for the last 15 years; Never in the past 15 years have I been belittled so much as I was in last week’s trip.
By ow it should be obvious that for the past 15 years of travelling, I was always on time for everything from the luggage drop off and control to the boarding gate. Last week’s trip came to break the tradition…-lol.
The day started as any usual travelling day starts. I woke up quite early to make sure that all was packed, and all was in order. After making sure that all was packed and ready it was time to depart. Reaching the airport I immediately left the largest luggage to get under the plane and I left to go towards the security check. As per the usual process I passed the check as normal and moved towards the Duty Free shopping floor.
By that time it was around 13:35 approximately, which meant that I ha d about 1.5 hours left to roam, since the gate was closing a little after 16:00… At this point I should point out that the flight’s departure time was exactly at 16:35… So it would stand to reason and it would make sense for anyone with a little common sense that the gates would make a final announcement at about 10 minutes before departure- (that would be 20past 16:00) and the gate would close five minutes later…
Having finished lunch it was about half three; me, like any reasonable being assuming that the gate would open around 15:45 to maybe 50, I stayed on the shopping floor- like any reasonable man… ( you will see why I keep saying it ) Since the plane was leaving 35 minutes past, i made my way towards the gate about 15 minutes earlier. I had by that time reached the gate at exactly 16:15. At some point, my attention was drawn on the board and that was the first “shock” for the day. The gate was closed. For that there was no doubt… what is even more shocking that I was not the only one that was left outside the plane- mind you though I was 15 whole minutes earlier there- there were another 20 people that were left outside the plane.
After trying to resonate with the ground personnel in a calm tone, they started shouting ad being rude. They stated that they checked our large luggages out and that we should return any spirits bought from the shopping floor…they became extremely rude and aggressive and we almost came into hands. They real “cherry on top” was that they had the audacity, to tell us that if we wanted to fly with the same flight the next day (24 hrs exactly- as there was not her flight that was leaving at that time the next day) we were to pay 100£ each…
At this point I was having none of it, so I decided to “rebook” the flight from another airport, as I was not going to sit there for 24 hrs. I managed to find a flight from Gatwick with a 12 hour difference and it was slightly less expensive; the flight was leaving from Gatwick at 05:50 in the morning… there was a total of 12 hours that I had to go through; 4 hours to Gatwick and 8 hours waiting at the airport.
My advice towards anyone who wishes to travel from that airport and with that company, is, please avoid travelling with Ryanair as they have little respect over any situation and anyone in general. We could have very well been boarded on that flight at 16:35 were it not for the twot rude and aggressive people of staff. Oh and before I forget it the word refund is not part of their policy nor their vocabulary.

Can I just talk about how awesome the Stanstead airport is from a railway perspective is. Like it isn't amongst the best served or best connected or anything but considering its size and location, it just tries so well.
It has trains at least every half an hour, if not every 15 minutes at certain times while the Gatwick Express is less frequent. It also has connections to other actual major UK cities, where Gatwick just goes to London and Brighton and Heathrow has no train service West so it is stuck with London while from Stansted you can get to Norwich, Peterborough, Cambridge, Leicester and Birmingham on top of London itself. (before you say anything, I know you can get from Reading and Guildford to Gatwick but like does anyone actually like that service, plus those places are in the small leagues compared to Brighton).
Considering that Stanstead is so much smaller than both Gatwick and Heathrow I would say it has an excellent service.

I went up to Anglia this week and pubs were on the menu. The GBG pubs visited so far are:
Pub 82 - Bishop Stortford Sports Club
This pleasant little Sports Club had a great range of beers and a friendly atmosphere. My pint, a bitter from Tring brewery, was great.
Pub 83 - The Star
A busy town centre pub with a really good range of interesting beers.
Pub 84 - The Castle
This is a great pub, a neighbourhood local with good beers and friendly locals
Pub 85 - The Three Horseshoes
An excellent food led pub which doesn't forget the importance of good ales
Pub 86 - The Railway Arms
An absolute winner with a great range of beers and a very buzzy atmosphere
Pub 87 - The Kings Arms
This city centre pub in Saffron Walden was good, if inevitably quite busy. The chocolate porter I had was nice
Pub 88 - The Coach and Horses
I'm sure this is a great pub but we didn't see the best of it. Still, my beer was perfectly serviceable.
Pub 89 - The Rose and Crown
A top pub in Stansted where I had a roast alongside a couple of Bishop Nick pubs
Pub 90 - Fleur De Lis
This historic pub was a winner with a great atmosphere and decent drinks
Pub 91 - The Maypole
This pub in beautiful Thaxted was great with a nice range of beers, mainly from Bishop Nick, and a busy convivial atmosphere.
After this I went up to Cambridge and added several more pubs to the list

THE ROAD TO VENICE
Arsenale stop on Colonna,
Garibaldi street
Venice..
June 8 23
 10.15 pm
Tumblr media
I did all the last minute tasks like getting Euros in cash, and downloading apps for airlines and a hard copy of the boarding passes and the coach.  There was also shopping for the right clothes, very thin for the weight of the luggage and then there is the rain forecast for Verona so where is the multi coloured umbrella?
It was such a long day and so much has happened.  I woke up in Reading and get a drive to the coach for Heathrow, which I caught with two minutes to spare.  I had just the person to see me off on a trip.  Why am I doing this, you say to yourself?  Because I was asked.
Also, I would be a fool to turn down a trip to Venice, wouldn’t I? But I really liked my home that I am trying to turn into to a homely cottage.  It has rather a lot of character though.
So I leave the South West, a rural area and board the crowded Heathrow coach until I reach the right airport and airline and meet up with my travelling companion.
Flying is the same as ever, it’s been so many years since I went anywhere.  Except now there is an issue with luggage, how big it is and how many you may take.  We all sit very close together, I don’t remember that and there isn’t that romance anymore is there.  But maybe that’s a Canadian thing.
So we made our flight after queueing in snake lines and I just smiled, what can you say?  That it didn’t use to be like this?  Nobody wants to hear that, but it’s true, it was lovely travelling, the freedom, the romance.
Tumblr media
The flight was lovely, perfect weather except for a little turbulence as we neared Italy, the mystery over luggage and what you can and can’t take with you.  I took my keyboard. I have to be able to write.  I have my pen and paper too.
Here in Italy I have no idea what’s going on.  It’s rather nice, bit like being a kid again because my opinion is not asked, not deemed important which it isn’t because I don’t understand any of the adult happenings.
So I made it to Stansted airport with all the hundreds of people going away because it is June and we are in a holiday mood and it strikes me that the English love to travel, and chase the sun.
Having landed in Venice we take the water taxi where my companion meets a retired English vicar and his wife from Camborne who spend month at a time here in Venice, just because they like it.  What an interesting type.  They have all the Brunetti books by Julia…and come several times a year and follow the Brunetti walk that has been created for those who follow the books.
NEXT: Getting Around in Venice.
