(the camera is also circling around the players 3:34 - 3:40: A scene with all of the MCR team going down a small steep hill, with the light glimmering in the background, we see every MCR team member. 4:09 - 4:31 - CLIMAX 4:09 - 4:14: (BSC skybase fight) 2 scenes of different angles of MCR and BSC fighting (we see nadoms placing tnt under BSC skybase in the background then the 3rd scene of nadoms placing tnt. the 4 beats: nadoms lighting the tnt, nadoms jumping away from the tnt, a close up of the the tnt turning white and big on side of the screen and the rest of MCR acting accoringly to references. Tnt explodes 4:14 - 4:20: (Eggsbenedict battle) 1st scene. Camera behind Westerly and Iksvo, Iksvo is on a skeleton horse and they are both chasing AverousPixel, 2nd scene we see the rest of the BSC team digging out and chasing Westerly & Iksvo. also AverousPixel kills Iksvo's skeleton horse (the camera is now infront of westerly looking back at BSC Westerly is running away. 3rd scene: A birds eye view of the valley (the camera is moving down and spinning), you see everyone, westerly on the getting chased by AverousPixel and MightBeRhombus. Averouspixel dying due to lightning. 4:25 - 4:31: JimRhombi running away from Westerly and Unieh chasing him, Jim turns around and westerly hits him off the bridge( the camera is at the edge of the bridge looking at Unieh and westerly chasing him. The camera changes when the WOOOOOLOOOOOO sound happens, it turns 2d and we see jim fall to his death. Then fade transition

Candy Says - The Velvet Underground

I realise in hindsight that this would have been the perfect uomcsp to have released yesterday but I wasn't thinking so I apologise. This may have been a bit rushed as a consequence but Happy (belated) Trans Day of Visibility.

It is hard to come up with the words to describe people sometimes. For me the best word to describe the Velvet Underground is that they were "underground", hence I am taking a quote from their kids version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica; "lyrically, it explored social and sexual deviance, drugs, violence, and despair." Essentially, the perfect combination to add to a sad playlist. I know too few Velvet tracks to properly pick out the saddest of the lot but here are some good examples.

Sunday Morning is the first track of the Velvet's first album. I am not an early riser, I typically get up in the afternoon when possible but every Sunday where I do wake up in the morning, I play the track, though that is arguably the wrong way around. While it has an innocent sound to it from its musical box style sound, it discusses staying up all night into the early hours of Sunday morning. In it, the speaker discusses their anxieties and regrets of what they did and how they feel like they are wasting time, resulting in the innocent sound being more hollow.

After Hours is quite a similar in nature to Sunday Morning, with the song about a person spending their nights in clubs but finding themselves alone after all of it. The song was made with a child like innocence with the singing handled by Moe Tucker, the drummer. The cute vibes of the song contradict the loneliness discussed in the song.

I'm Waiting for the Man is standing on the corner waiting for the drug dealer. It isn't sad in the conventional sense but considering that the heroin addict is "lookin' for a dear, dear friend", shows that they are so desperate for heroin that the dealer looks like a friend, even though the dealer doesn't care for them.

Candy Says however has come out on top for the Velvet's saddest track. The Candy in the track's title is about Candy Darling, a transgender actress they knew. The song generally was about being depressed, though the opening itself establishes this is from dysphoria as "Candy says 'I've come to hate my body'".

The Slow Train - Flanders and Swann

I have started discussing sad train songs so I can't escape the link. I realise when looking for sad songs, one may not seek the works of a comedy duo though despite their more light-hearted song writing and relatively small discography, they have a few heavier hitting songs.

Twenty Tons of TNT is a track about nuclear disarmament, specifically concerning how there were estimates that for every person on earth at the time there were 20 tonnes of TNT worth of explosives held in nuclear weapons.

This was back in the mid-1960s, roughly the time of the Cuban missile crisis so was very much in the era of nuclear warfare but it always posed a question in my mind, how many tonnes of TNT are there now in nuclear weapons? Obviously there are plenty of nations who have scaled back their weapon numbers but also more countries have them now and nuclear weapons are more powerful than they used to be. I am not the most proficient researcher but I never was able to come up with an answer because of how unknown figures are which I'd argue is another more terrifying concept.

The song has a vaguely militaristic chant sound to it, with a call and response of "Twenty tons of TNT", though by the forth verse, they just play through the line without saying the line, emphasising the repetitiveness of the problem and how it is the root of the issue. While this song did not win being the saddest Flanders and Swann song, I would highly recommend the song on its own.

Misalliance is a song about plants, which goes against the typical animal songs that they wrote. It is harder to find people's views on Flanders and Swann tracks as there is generally not as much discourse about them online, so I find that the song basically is a shortened version of Romeo and Juliet. However, I feel like there is an analogy for people’s objections to homosexuality in the 1960s, with them describing how they would not be able to have any offshoots. Maybe I am reading too much into it but the attitudes the bee has seem to be similar to homophobic attitudes which adds another tragedy to the Shakespearean tale.

Finally, there is the Slow Train, which is a song about the closure of railways of stations within Great Britain under the Beeching Axe. There is too much to go into Beeching for a short song analysis (if you want a rant about it, let me know) but for those who don't know, Beeching was tasked with making the British Railways more "efficient" which was really a task of cutting the railways back. The first of these reports resulted in 30% of the track mileage and 55% of the stations in Britain to be closed.

This led to many communities to be negatively impacted by a lack of decent connections to other places as well as a loss of so many places ingrained in a part of British culture. These stations weren't typically the large stations and often small, quaint, rural stations. The song misses the regular ongoings of people's lives and the life which these stations brought would be taken away, such as "no churns, no porter, no cat on a seat". The song misses an image of the railways which is often romanticised to this day.

Love In Vain - Robert Johnson

I felt like I needed to include a blues track somewhere, though I have found it hard to walk that fine line between depressing and sad in the genre, however I feel that Robert Johnson wrote the perfect track for this, and of course it wouldn't be a true @uomminecraftsociety post if it didn't include trains. This track is probably best known as a Rolling Stones cover but I find this version better.

Love in Vain is a track about a loved one leaving on a train. The narrator still holds feeling for the person, however the person in the question does not feel the same way. The melody is rather simple, with a regular percussive sound running through, imitating the chug of a train. This adds a bit of a lighter tone compared to your typical blues track however it still holds a certain degree of sadness.

Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones

Ok, so not everyone will have as detailed of a review as the previous people as I don't know their discographies as well.

The typical competition to the Beatles were the Rolling Stones and they too had some songs which one could consider sad.

I have one other song which I wanted to include for the Rolling Stones however this song is a cover and I feel it works best with the original artist as it feels more logical and I also find the original better.

Wild Horses were penned under both Richard and Jagger. The initial words were written by Keith Richards was a lullaby created for their child who they were distant to while on tour.

The song under Mick Jagger was slightly different, where the song was using words from Marianne Faithful coming out of a coma.

So in the end, I'd argue the song is really about being disconnected from your loved ones and the tone reflects it well.

Can I just talk about how awesome the Stanstead airport is from a railway perspective is. Like it isn't amongst the best served or best connected or anything but considering its size and location, it just tries so well.

It has trains at least every half an hour, if not every 15 minutes at certain times while the Gatwick Express is less frequent. It also has connections to other actual major UK cities, where Gatwick just goes to London and Brighton and Heathrow has no train service West so it is stuck with London while from Stansted you can get to Norwich, Peterborough, Cambridge, Leicester and Birmingham on top of London itself. (before you say anything, I know you can get from Reading and Guildford to Gatwick but like does anyone actually like that service, plus those places are in the small leagues compared to Brighton).

Considering that Stanstead is so much smaller than both Gatwick and Heathrow I would say it has an excellent service.

She’s Leaving Home - The Beatles

One of the main competition to the Kinks were the Beatles. The Beatles were a popular pop band and the emotion of sadness doesn’t necessarily lend itself well to sadness, happiness sells better than sadness.

As a consequence, one would not expect a significant collection of sad songs from the Beatles however their collection is surprisingly large. I feel that the go to track to anyone less familiar with the Beatles would almost certainly be Eleanor Rigby, a track about loneliness or Yesterday, a song about a breakup.

I would argue that while these are sad, these are probably too heavy for the list and if there is any band I can most comfortably introduce people to the saddest songs to, it most certainly is the Beatles.

In My Life is another classic song, remembering the moments which you’ve spent with someone dear to you, of which “some have gone and some remain”. I’d say the remorseful nature of the song doesn’t hold the same heaviness of Eleanor Rigby or Yesterday. However the first time I ever heard the song was at a wedding and while it does acknowledge that some have gone, it does work in the context of a wedding and can, if you look at it the right angle be a track of hope for your wonderful future.

Nowhere Man is about the sense of inadequacy which John Lennon felt and while it certainly is high up on the list and nearly made it to the top spot, I would argue it holds a slightly more deprecating view.

For No One is a song about Paul’s break up with Jane Asher and the original title of Why Did It Die? reflects the attitudes which Paul would have felt at the time. That being said, the title does not reflect the tone of the song as while it is upset, it is not quite so down. The breakup presented is so cold, however the composition is so perfect you can not help but enjoy the track for how it is played.

Only a Northern Song is a weird track and ultimately doesn’t sound that sad but considering that this was George Harrison writing about his disputes with Lennon-McCartney and their publishing company Northern Songs LTD and how Harrison ultimately felt kept out and not respected for their songwriting abilities, one can empathise with George’s position.

The chronology of the Beatles gets a bit weird with the Beatles on Let It Be and Abbey Road but while Abbey Road was released first, it was actually recorded after the sessions for Let It Be. This means that when you listen to The End, it really was a farewell track, being one of the last tracks they ever recorded, potentially the last track depending on your view on what your view of a last track is. There are not many lyrics behind the track, but rather a solo for each of the Beatles as a final send off, with a line at the end “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make”, a musical goodbye.

The Long and Winding Road is a song written about the breaking up of the Beatles and the tensions that were forming. Paul at that point was desperately trying to hold the band together but ultimately couldn’t get what he wanted in that. This probably hurt McCartney further as it was clear that they were unsatisfied with the final product of the song, with Phil Spector applying his wall of sound among other issues and would be the most altered track on the album when Let It Be (album) was remastered in Let It Be Naked.

I put She’s Leaving Home as the sad Beatles song pick for this as it discusses the character of a girl escaping from her home, based on a person in the newspaper. The girl ultimately gets the freedom that she wanted but the chorus, seemingly written from the perspective of the parents distraught from losing their girl. This was one of the very few Beatles tracks not to feature any of the Beatles playing, instead getting an orchestra to play the track. The string instrument composition lends itself well to the mood created but also doesn’t hold as heavy of a tone as some of the other tracks does, allowing it to not get to the point of depressing.
