Skulduggery: Of course not. I also intend to do some blathering, a little nattering, and the occasional gibber. But not too much, lest I overdo a good thing.

Gant: Great.

Skulduggery: I've been practising my burble.

MAJOR SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT SPOILERS

But I was rereading The Death Bringer and I just realised what this was and CHOKED

*MIDNIGHT SPOILER*

...So y'know how Val apparently learnt to salsa while in Colorado, but also apparently a bunch of other stuff?

All I can now picture is Val working her way through every conceivable hobby, kind of like in the opening song from Tangled. She tries chess for a week (it doesn't go well), drawing (doesn't last for more than 2 hours - she definitely doesn't have the patience), and yoga (Xena joins in and it's actually something she grows to like).

But anyway, one of the things she tries is knitting. Initially, Valkyrie cannot knit worth a damn. She keeps trying at it and eventually just gives up. Then, she's sat on the sofa watching her way through another Netflix original and before she knows it she's knitted a bunch of rows that actually don't look awful.

This continues whenever Val sits down and turns her brain onto autopilot until she's got a helluva lot of knitting in her lap and no idea what to do with it. It sits in a pile on the coffee table for a while, ignored while she deals with an especially bad patch, and it happens to be the one thing that sparks something in her mind to snap her back to reality.

Valkyrie spends the fair part of a day planning and piecing together what eventually becomes a Very Large Sweater. The final product is mossy green and just a little bit holey, but the sense of accomplishment that accompanies it is enough for Val.

She wears it around a couple of days before she drops it on top of her chest of drawers, and then a few days after that tucks it away in one of her 4am coffee-fuelled cleaning binges. She forgets it's even there, until he knocks at the door with a bouquet and a head tilt.

After they stumble over the initial awkwardness, he hands her the flowers and she practically runs from the room. Valkyrie returns a minute later and throws knitwear at his head. Gift exchange, she calls it.

She never actually imagined he'd wear it, but he does. Worryingly regularly, when they're not out working on a case. He comes round to her parents' house for dinner one day and it's the first time they've seen him without the suit. Desmond opens the door to him wearing the façade and doesn't even recognise him. From a three-piece to jeans and an ugly sweater, it's a bit of a culture shock for the Edgley family. Skulduggery just walks in and flashes Valkyrie a wink on the way past.

abyssinia’s son is a magic bone baby

(minor spoilers for the Midnight preview)

PREFACE: this theory post is either going to age into a shining example of my theory skills or a hysterical shit post. leggo.

THESIS STATEMENT: the only logical point of an “evil ex girlfriend” plot as well as skulduggery’s main character motivation being the death of his family is to give him a son that must be killed.

caisson was created both as an scientific experiment (“let’s make a baby out of bone marrow and magic!! WHEEEE!!!”) and a way to manipulate skulduggery, who Abyssinia already abused and manipulated throughout their courtship.

- like I said, it really goes to the crux of skulduggery’s story to give him another chance at a family but of course it’s fucked because abby is evil and caisson is destined to be killed by auger.

- the overall arc of phase 2 is “valkyrie’s journey back to skulduggery.” she’s going to have to lose him before that arc is completed. and I suspect the family manipulation from abyssinia is what does it. girl clearly has an endgoal involving skulduggery (keeping him safe and sound throughout spx, never breathing a word about vile, etc etc).

- abby is revealed to have had a sexual relationship with skulduggery and then like 3 pages it’s like “then she had a kid. let’s not question where the fuck said kid came from. it’s fine.”

- seriously WHY would Abyssinia have a kid from some off screen war rando? like, narratively, why does that make any sense?? why have her be skulduggery’s ex girlfriend instead of just some new war era character ?

- “that’s not how babies are made” NO ONE CAN BE REVIVED FROM JUST THEIR HEART EITHER OK SHE GOT BONE MARROW OR SOME SHIT

-in the midnight preview, skulduggery reacts to caisson’s name, by repeating it back. narrative wise we’re trying to hint on the fact there’s a connection there. Also: “I see,” he said, taking a moment. Sus. Sus!!!

side crack theory: caisson and skulduggery have met before. he may even be the partner who died - because he shares his mother’s life force stealing abilities. THIS tho is a stretch I just would rather double up on Rando Male Characters than have to deal with caisson AND old partner being important

hello fellas do any of yall know of fanfic where Skulduggery actually shoots valkyrie in the head in resurrection and has to deal with the consequences emotionally or would anyone be willing to write it lol
