People always talk about Dean’s “I’d rather have you, cursed or not” but I don’t think we talk enough about the next half a minute of Dean trying and failing to act normal when Cas smiles softly at him because they finally made up, tells him he’ll go with him and he’ll do his best, and then shyly asks him about the plan. Like he literally cannot for the life of him contain his smile that he had to hide his face and LOOK AWAY (several times!) throughout their whole conversation, because Cas was being so fucking adorable.

Like the thing about Sera Gamble is she takes over the “monster hunting as a veneer for working through personal problems” show and is like “oh I know! The thing people like about this show is the monster hunting! How about I get rid of all the side characters – all that matters is two brothers in their car”. And that’s how you get 7x02 (not written by her but she’s the reason it exists) which is “oh yeah you remember how our former friend is a villain now and how potentially meaty a concept that is? Well he’s exploded in a lake because he was filled with cannibalistic goo monsters who are now in the water supply but don’t worry!! They’ve decided for some reason that our protagonists are important so they’ll be the villains now instead, which is what matters”. And it’s also how you get a season finale like 7x23 where Dean’s journey is 1) resigning himself to just the endless unsatisfying slog that is hunting/life and 2) getting Cas to knuckle under and join the fight; Sam’s journey is ????; and Cas’s journey is being afraid of fighting / making mistakes, having people be mean to him about it and then eventually capitulating when Dean seems mildly nice. Bobby arguably has the best conclusion by going out on his own terms without ‘becoming vengeful’ – but more than anything that’s tying up a loose thread from the season rather than ending on a satisfying beat for the character, otherwise you’d think you’d give him a moment of catharsis helping to take out Dick Roman, and have him pass on there. Like, we’re not telling interesting stories about these characters as people, we’re just wrapping up the leviathan arc! And this is because Sera Gamble does not think her job as showrunner is to deliver a finale with compelling emotional threads running through it – she thinks all that matters is the monster fighting, and the extent to which the characters can serve it (along with a healthy amount of dick jokes of course)

Well, we made it to the end of a long season with a severe case of Cas-drought. In this episode, we cover 7x23, “Survival of the Fittest.” It’s a long road paved with Destiel and confusing yet at times utterly delightful writing, some Dickley Croman, and then there’s the Ghobby of it all. Stop laughing, Australians.
