@orcalegacy 🖋 HELP SHARE LOLITA'S STORY #Repost @orcalegacy #ahasave @ahasave —— I think this picture is a perfect example of the 'education' that goes around in marine entertainment parks... Today I listened to another podcast episode by @sentientplanetpodcast which is dedicated to Tokitae (Some may know her as Lolita). I highly recommend listening to it! You'll hear a member of the Lummi nation speak about her essay about Tokitae, her visit to Miami Seaquarium and the horrific conditions the poor orca is held in. She also tells her tribal story about human connection to the orcas. Tokitae is the last surviving stolen Southern Resident And she is not forgotten. The fight for her freedom continues every single day. Share her story, take action. Let's help Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut see the ocean again. . . . . . #tokitae #freetokitae #freelolita #captivitykills #dontbuyaticket #orca #killerwhale #stolenfreedom #southernresidentorcas #salishsea (at Miami Seaquarium) https://www.instagram.com/p/CO5MLF2B82N/?igshid=hhtyt2gxxsnf

Similar to sharks, orcas play an important role in keeping the ocean and animal populations healthy & in balance. Sadly, the 74 remaining southern resident orcas in the Salish Sea are currently starving to death due to their prey, the chinook salmon, also being at an extremely low population number. There are 4 dams in the Snake River that are preventing the salmon from repopulating and thriving as they typically would. If these dams were breached, both the salmon and orcas could have a chance to recover! 💙 Please call Governor Inslee’s office 👉🏽(360) 902-4111👈🏽 and ask to please breach the Snake River dams as soon as possible to save the starving orcas. // Learn and act more over at @pnwprotectors. // Photo by @hysazu ・・・ This is J17 Princess Angeline. J-46 Star
Aghhh I’m so sad for her. I mean considering the rate of miscarriages and calves dying so young for the southern residents, I shouldn’t have been shocked at all to hear she lost her pregnancy. Poor girl did not deserve this. She would have made a great mama. Hopefully she’ll get that chance again someday.
For anyone wondering, yeah Star isn’t pregnant anymore. She’s trim again. She lost the calf sometime between maybe two months ago. I thought something was up when she was so huge, considered near giving birth and then not giving birth.

Reposted from @kristinbauer (@get_regrann) - Only 73 left now!!! 3 more starved to death because humans are taking all their salmon! How is this rocket science. FEED THESE ORCAS #washingtonstate !!! @govinslee WTF are you waiting for?!?! Repost from @oceana using @RepostRegramApp - #BREAKING: Three critically endangered Southern Resident orcas are presumed dead, bringing the population total from 76 to 73 - the lowest the population has been since the live-capture era of the 1970s ended. The orcas believed to be dead are K25, a 28-year-old male last seen in January; L84, a 29-year-old male who was the last of his matriline; and J17, a 42-year-old matriach who is survived by her son and two daughters, one of whom is Tahlequah, who is known for having carried her dead calf for 17 days. . These missing orcas were last seen emaciated, and it's suspected that they died from starvation caused by lack of their preferred prey: Chinook salmon. The lack of salmon is the primary threat to their existence, which is why the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) needs to take immediate action to reduce salmon fishing and bycatch to help these orcas recover. . Follow the link in our bio to sign the letter telling the PFMC to adopt the five comprehensive actions that Oceana has laid out for Southern Resident orca recovery. . 📸: NOAA 📸: Shutterstock (2-3) #ocean #oceans #southernresidentorcas #orcas #killerwhales #orca #extinction #endangeredspecies #takeaction - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/B06YkFHhzoN/?igshid=1mev5boyv87i6

The only thing I wish they would have done differently is not used the derogatory term for our orcas. They’re not killers! #BHLDailySciArt: Orcas (Orcinus orca). June is #OrcaAwarenessMonth highlighting the challenges faced by resident Orcas along the northwest coast of North America. Orcas are toothed whales that have highly complex social structures and live in ecological niches across the globe. The Southern Resident Orcas that live off the coast Pacific Northwest were listed on the U.S. Endangered Species List in 2005. This illustration was done by Archibald Thorburn for his British Mammals, Vol. 2 (1920-21). Tokitae is moving back to Pacific Northwest from Miami Seaquarium and needs collective effort for her to survive and join her community. The decline of salmon has a huge impact on Southern Resident Orcas and the indigenous identities of Salish Sea people. Please take action to protect the learn, join action, protect the salmons, orcas, the sea, and the future. From @oneoceanglobal ambassador @kennaaloha #Repost // Speaking up for those without a voice ❤️ The #SouthernResidentOrcas are starving to death, primarily because their primary source of food, the chinook salmon, are also at the risk of extinction. If @GovInslee of Washington State breached the 4 Snake River dams, both the chinook salmon AND the orcas would actually have a chance against EXTINCTION. The salmon could repopulate back to a sustainable number and the orcas could finally have enough food to survive and reproduce! ⠀ ⠀ PLEASE send Governor Inslee your letters! ✉️ 1 Handwritten letter = 2,000 votes! So writing to @GovInslee is extremely valuable! Please ask him to “Breach the Snake River dams in 2018 for both the chinook salmon and the southern resident orcas in the Salish Sea!” You can also call and send E-messages. Be a voice for the voiceless 🙌🏽⠀ ⠀ These animals play such an important role in the ocean. We’ve already messed with the planet’s natural balance enough! It’s time we actually become CARETAKERS of the planet instead! Again, we are all connected! 💙🌎⠀ ⠀ For more details on the southern resident orca situation, check out @pnwprotectors who has all the information you need, both on this crisis as well as the Governor’s contact info! You can also check out my previous post on this problem that I shared just a few posts back to learn more 🙏🏽 Save the Southern Residents! Breach the Dams!. . . @biodiversity_creative and I are half way through teaching our Orca and Salmon Co-recovery class in partnership with @creatureconserve and @endangeredspeciescoalition . Students have had the opportunity to listen to presentations from leading southern resident orca and chinook salmon researchers, and over the course of the class are learning to represent the plight of these animals in visual compositions. The first slide shows a presentation from a representative of @orcanetwork_langleywhalecenter , the next shows my thumbnail drawing and idea generation demo, and the next two show student work. I'm excited to see the work that students produce as a result of this workshop, and will be sharing more about a related project in the coming months! #conservation #class #scienceeducation #art #steam #workshop #southernresidentorca #chinook #salmon #killerwhale #biodiversity #thumbnail #artconcepts https://www.instagram.com/p/CGztusBj91c/?igshid=1gl27udrroli9
