Merry Christmas Eve! This week's post is a guest post from the Copenhagen Plant Science Centre in Denmark, used with their generous permission.
PLANT OF THE WEEK – Viscum album (common name: Mistletoe, mistelten). Mistletoe is particularly eye-catching during wintertime as lush, green globes high in the leafless treetops. Its many small, pearly white berries form a striking contrast to its evergreen foliage. Mistletoe is an evergreen hemiparasite with branches more than 50 cm long. The shoot system is dichotomous with opposite, ligulate leaves. There are female and male plants. The 1-3 mm long yellow-greenish flowers are placed apically in groups of three. In male flowers, the anthers are fused with perianth segments. Female flowers have an inferior ovary with a sessile stigma. They are pollinated in April, mainly by small flies. The fruit is a white berry with a very sticky pulp. All parts of the plant are moderately poisonous. The berries develop in autumn and winter and provide food for migrating birds, mainly Bohemian waxwings and mistle thrushes. The berries quickly pass through the bird, and the defecated seeds can be seen dangling from branches in sticky garlands strung together by undigested remnants of the pulp. The Eurasian blackcap uses its beak to squeeze the seed from the fruit before it is eaten. To remove the sticky seed, the bird rubs its beak against a twig, thus depositing the seed in a place it is likely able to germinate. Mistletoe grows on many species of deciduous trees (some on conifers). It attaches to its host by a haustorium, a modified root, which penetrates the vessels, from where it obtains water and nutrients. The mistletoe has chloroplasts and can perform photosynthesis; hence the term ‘hemiparasite’. Interestingly, the mitochondrial genome of mistletoe is much smaller than that of other plants and lacks many important genes, causing inefficient energy production. The mistletoe can cope on this low energy budget due to its very slow growth and parasitic lifestyle. Today, mistletoe is widely distributed in Europe south of Denmark. Fossil records from 9,000 – 6,000 years ago show that mistletoe has previously been present in Denmark. After being extinct for many years, introduced specimens from gardens are now spreading in Denmark, especially around Copenhagen. Throughout history, mistletoe has played a role in many cultures. It was believed to possess magical powers, e.g. by the Celtic druids. In Denmark, we know the mistletoe from Nordic mythology, where the goddess Frigg forgot to extract an oath from the deceptively innocuous mistletoe, when she made all beings swear to never harm Balder. Today, it is mainly associated with the Christmastime custom that whoever stands beneath a mistletoe may be kissed. Though mistletoe has long been regarded as a fertility symbol, this custom is fairly new as it is first described in England in the mid-18th century. This Plant of the Week is presented by Niels Jacobsen, Kira Tendal, Karen Rysbjerg Jensen and marian ørgaard, employees at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

The Hipster Part of tel Aviv
Tumblr media
Florentine is a hipster-style neighborhood, in the South of Tel-Aviv, Israel and it is mainly known for its laid-back vibe, bohemian cafes, and graffiti art that is scattered across the streets.
During the day the atmosphere is peaceful and calm, whereas, the neighborhood’s nightlife is fun and vibrant. Based on what Florentine is like during the day and night, it might seem like it’s two different neighborhoods mixed into one.
But what’s for sure is that it’s hard to picture it completely lifeless.
Even during the pandemic when the country was completely closed off and free from visitors, many locals kept the neighborhood busy and the local businesses running.
In the spring of 2022, I visited the Florentine neighborhood and it surprised me in many ways; one of them was how little the absence of tourists affected its liveliness.
Sometimes it seemed like tourists weren’t even missing at all.
Much like around the rest of Tel-Aviv, people spoke different languages, and the chances of hearing people speak American or British English were no less than the chances of hearing Hebrew.
Today, the Florentine neighborhood is one of the most affluent parts of the city and one of the most diverse, however, it hasn’t always been this way.
When Israel was first created, poor Jewish immigrants populated the neighborhood and for many years forward Florentine was a middle-class working area that suffered from poverty. Mainly Sephardic Jews (Spanish Jews who were displaced from Spain in the 1400s and, as a result, settled across Europe) from countries like Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece made up the first population to inhabit the neighborhood.
The name, actually, “Florentine”, came from the neighborhood’s first leader named “David Florentine”, who was an immigrant from Greece.
Later on, in the 1960s, the original residents began to move out to new parts of Tel-Aviv which brought even less money into the neighborhood and only worsened its state, turning it into a slum.
Only when the area started to attract the younger generation, did things start to change for the better.
From the 1990s and throughout the 2000s, many novice artists began to move into Florentine for its low rent prices, slowly bringing about change and a new era in the Florentine neighborhood.
This new era was more modern, more progressive, and, overall, more hipster.
The community began to become international and so did the trends and the lifestyle that shifted from purely middle eastern to a mix of European, American, and Israeli. It became a tourist attraction that also offered an authentic introduction to the Israeli culture in the heart of Tel-Aviv.
To this day, this is what the Florentine neighborhood is like.
Getting back to street art, it really is almost everywhere. From buildings’ walls to garbage bins, graffiti art can range from small, inspirational quotes to giant, colorful portraits.
The more I explored, the more I realized how few the limits were to art in the area, and the more I learned about its abundance too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Florentine is made up of square blocks and narrow roads and, unlike some popular tourist destinations, there isn’t a specific spot where all of the attractions are, instead, they are dispersed across the whole neighborhood which makes exploring as a first-time visitor more interesting and exciting.
To see most of the place took me a little less than a day, and I still feel like there was more to see and do.
Apart from seeing the graffiti art, I checked out the nearby Levinsky shuk (street market) that was right across the street from the Florentine neighborhood. It had street vendors and shops that sold a wide range of traditional middle-eastern food (starting from Baklava and ending at Bourekas).
This is what I mean when I talk about the contrast of cultures that is in and around Florentine. One minute I was in the Florentine neighborhood looking at tattoo parlors, boho cafes with vegan options, and jazz bars, and then the next I was at a traditional middle-eastern street market with street vendors selling mountains of spices.
It’s like a roller coaster of cultures and I can say that it is definitely a fun ride.
Most of the shops and street stalls at the Levinsky shuk are family businesses that have been running for decades with recipes that go many years back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of the diverse community, a lot of the trends that are part of the Florentine lifestyle come from both America and Europe. In the morning and during the day, a lot of people can be seen walking their dogs or riding their bikes. Some of the most popular fashion trends are dreads, tattoos, and piercings. This doesn’t come as a surprise since most expats in Israel tend to be located in either Haifa or Tel-Aviv.
Tumblr media
I’ve enjoyed getting to know what the Israeli culture is like through the Florentine neighborhood and to anyone who’s planning a visit, I’d recommend coming and getting this delicious slice of cool for themselves.

∗❀𓇣❁introducing you the south bohemian culture❁𓇣❀∗
ok so since noone really cares about south bohemian culture anymore, i'll to try to embrace it here on my blog, at least so that people know it exists. for the ones who don't know, Bohemia is an area in Czechia, that takes up most of the country. in czech, it is called 'Čechy'. now, you might notice the similarity between the words chechia and čechy - yes, my whole country is called after this part of it, even though it contains three regions: Bohemia (Čechy), Moravia (Morava) and Silesia (Slezsko). moravians and silesians take care of their culture pretty well in these trying times, but the bohemians, being the most influenced by the west culture, usually don't. so here's me, the tiniest person on tumblr, trying to do something about it! yay!! ❀first i'd like to say something about the name of this entire region. so according to an old, veery old myth, at first, all the slavic tribes lived in one place, 'v matičce Rusi' (in the mother of all, Russia). But the tribes and families started to lack space for their houses, animals and children, and thus two brothers, Čech and Lech, decided to go search for a new place for them. they went a long, long way, until they came to today's czechia, specifically to the mountain Říp (it actually exists). the forefather Čech climbed on the top of it, he looked around and saw, that they came in their promised land. it had beautiful mountains on the sides and fertile meadows in the middle, miles and miles of dark woods, and it was rich in milk and honey. and when he asked what it should be called, the slavs shouted in excitement that it should be called after the forefather himself. (i love this story a lot<3)
❀next post is going to be about the south bohemian region itself and it's parts! i'm planning on still posting art on this blog, but making it more representing of my slavic culture. i hope someone finds this interesting!
also sorry if i made any english mistakes :)

Goa on a Budget: Beach Bliss Without Breaking the Bank
Tumblr media
Ah, Goa! For those seeking an escape from the usual tourist bustle, hidden gems like Arambol and Cola offer a taste of the authentic Goa experience. But for many travelers, Goa seems like a luxurious escape, something reserved for honeymooners and high-rollers. Not anymore! Goa can be a budget-friendly paradise, offering stunning scenery, delicious food, and vibrant culture without burning a hole in your wallet.
Planning Your Budget Bliss Getaway:
The first step to your budget-friendly Goa adventure is planning. Here's how to get started:
Season's Greetings: Goa shimmers brightest during the peak season (November to February). However, shoulder seasons (March–May, September–October) offer pleasant weather and significantly lower prices on flights and accommodation. Don't be afraid to consider the monsoon season (June–August) either. While you might encounter occasional showers, you'll be rewarded with lush greenery, fewer crowds, and rock-bottom prices.
Beachside Bliss on a Budget: North Goa pulsates with a party vibe, while South Goa offers tranquility. Research beaches like Calangute (lively), Anjuna (bohemian), Agonda (secluded), and Palolem (picturesque). For those seeking an escape from the usual tourist bustle, hidden gems like Arambol and Cola offer a taste of the authentic Goa experience.
Finding the Perfect Package (Without Breaking the Bank):
While exploring Goa on your own is fantastic, tour packages can sometimes offer great value, especially for those who prefer a structured itinerary or assistance with transportation and accommodation. Here are some tips for finding budget-friendly Goa tour packages from Ahmedabad:
Search Online: Numerous travel agencies offer Goa tour packages from Ahmedabad. Look for reputable companies with good reviews and compare prices before booking.
Consider All-Inclusive Options: Some all-inclusive packages might seem pricier upfront, but they can be budget-friendly in the long run, especially if you plan on indulging in meals and drinks.
Accommodation on a Shoestring:
Hostels and Guest Houses: Ditch the fancy resorts and embrace the social atmosphere of hostels or guesthouses. Many offer dorm beds for the ultimate budget stay, while private rooms are still very affordable. Look for options with shared kitchens to save on meals.
Beach Shacks: These iconic Goan huts lining the beaches are a fantastic budget option. Some offer basic rooms with stunning sea views, perfect for those who prioritize beach proximity over luxury.
Homestays: Immerse yourself in local life by staying with a Goan family. Homestays are a great way to experience authentic culture, get insider tips, and potentially enjoy delicious home-cooked meals at a reasonable price.
Foodie Delights Without the Bite:
Goa is a haven for food lovers, and you don't need to splurge on fancy restaurants to experience its culinary magic. Here are some budget-friendly options:
Beach Shacks: These aren't just for accommodation! Beach shacks serve delicious and affordable local fare. Sample fresh seafood curries, vegetable xacuti (a spicy coconut curry), and the ever-popular chicken cafreal. Most shacks offer happy hours and deals on drinks.
Local Eateries: Venture inland and explore the vibrant local food scene. Small family-run restaurants offer thalis (traditional set meals) with rice, curries, vegetables, and sometimes even fish, all at unbelievably low prices.
Street Food Stalls: No budget Goa trip is complete without indulging in the vibrant street food scene. Sample samosas, bhajis (fried vegetable fritters), and the local bread, poee. Don't forget to try the refreshing coconut water to beat the heat.
Free and Fun Activities:
Goa isn't just about lounging on the beach (although there's plenty of that too!). Here are some free or cheap activities to keep you entertained:
Bask in the Sun: The beaches are Goa's crown jewels and the best part? They're completely free to enjoy! Spread out your towel, soak up the sun, and listen to the soothing sound of the waves.
Explore Markets: Bargaining is an art form in Goa. Flea markets like the Anjuna Wednesday Market and the Arpora Saturday Night Market are a treasure trove of souvenirs, clothes, and handicrafts. Put your haggling skills to the
