Dear Yuletide Author 2022

I’m so excited that it’s Yuletide time once again, and I can’t wait to see what you create!

Do not wants/dislikes: No E-rated fic, please (M or lower is fine). If a character is injured, hospitalized or suffers a medical emergency in the fic, please warn/tag for it even if it’s a minor character and even if it spoils the plot.

What I like: I’m all about characterization - what makes these people tick? Why do they like each other so much? - and I’m an especially big fan of when characters who seem wildly different are inexplicably drawn to each other. In stories where I’ve requested multiple characters (or no specific characters), I’d be just as happy with an ensemble story as with something focused on one or two characters specifically. If you bring your love of the canon into your writing and focus on what makes the world and the people in it so special, I know I’ll love whatever you write!

ヒヤマケンタロウの妊娠 | He's Expecting

Hiyama Kentaro, Seto Aki

This was my favorite show I watched in 2022, and one of my favorite shows in a long time. It was so smart and incisive on issues of gender, reproductive health care, childrearing, and misogyny, while also being wildly funny and introducing us to so many endearing, relatable characters. While I respected the show’s decision not to bring Kentaro and Aki together, it also made me a little sad because I think they would be a great couple. I’d love fic about them getting together, whether it’s during the events of the show or afterwards. Any way you want to bring them together is fine, but please try to keep it to the spirit of the show and don’t have them capitulate to social expectations for their relationship.

消えた初恋 | Kieta Hatsukoi | Vanishing My First Love

Aida Hayato, Aoki Souta, Hashimoto Mio, Ida Kousuke

I was so charmed by this show and everyone in it. I’d really like a fic about what happens once these couples pair off and move from the initial stage of getting together to building more established relationships. How do they avoid the misunderstandings that kept them apart initially? How do their friendships with each other change now that they’re a group of two couples instead of four friends? What horrifyingly awkward high school events will they have to navigate next? I’m including all four characters here because I’d like them all to be in the fic, but whichever couple you decide to focus more on is up to you.

Piranesi - Susanna Clarke

The House, Piranesi | Matthew Rose Sorenson

Piranesi hints at so many wonderful adventures in The House that take place around and before the events of the story. I’d love fic about one of those adventures, whether it’s learning a new skill, exploring a new room, or discovering a new statue. You can choose to flesh out one that’s mentioned in the story, or you can invent one of your own. You can bring in other characters if you’d like, but keep it focused on Piranesi and his relationship with The House.

Psmith - P.G. Wodehouse

Mike Jackson, Rupert Psmith

After years of being a Jeeves and Wooster stan, I finally delved into the Psmith oevre this year, and I can’t believe it took me this long. Psmith is such a funny, chaotic whirlwind of a character, and Mike is the perfect foil to him. It’s obvious to me that Psmith is in love with “Comrade Jackson”, despite their many opposite ways, and I’d love either a story about the two of them getting together, or established relationship fic where they’re navigating some shenanigans together. Anyone from Psmith’s world is fair game to include as supporting characters.

A Triple Dose of Terrible Titillation

This week three titles came out all at once that made Manga Bookshelf collectively groan and hold their heads. I decided, in a rare masochistic moment, to read all three of the new volumes. It rapidly became apparent that I’d have to review them together, as they all defied my ability to spin a large number of words. So let’s get started with title #1, which is easily the scuzziest of the three.

(Please note: all three of these titles are various degrees of sexually explicit. Reader discretion is advised.)

Peter Grill and the Philosopher’s Time. By Daisuke Hiyama. Released in Japan as “Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan” by Futabasha, serialization ongoing in the magazine Monthly Action. Released in North America by Seven Seas. Translated by Ben Tretheway. Adapted by David Lumsdon.

First off, a brief summary: a guy wins a worldwide fighting tournament, and is recognized as the strongest in the land. He wants to marry his pretty but naive fiancee, but unfortunately as he’s the strongest every woman around wants to have sex with him. He attempts to resist, but fails. Rinse and repeat. As for a review… at least it’s not hiding what it wants to be. About 15 pages into this book, I had read as euphemisms “man yogurt”, “down-low mayo”, “cream filling”, and “man mucus”, to the point where I wanted to beg the translators to just say “cum” over and over like a normal person. They say they want to bear his strong children, but honestly, it’s all about the sex. We get two ogres and an elf in this book, and I’m sure as the series goes on more fantasy creatures will show up. As for Peter, he’s the sort of guy that creators think is likeable but is really teeth-grindingly irritating. It certainly has an audience, but that audience is “80s sex comedy”. I’m amazed the pages didn’t stick together… and I read it on a tablet.

Breasts Are My Favorite Things in the World!. By Wakame Konbu. Released in Japan as “Sekai de Ichiban Oppai ga Suki!” by Media Factory, serialization ongoing in the magazine Comic Cune. Released in North America by Yen Press. Translated by Alexandra McCullough.

This was not as offensive as Peter Grill, but does have the problem that I kept checking to see how many pages to the end. It’s possibly the most boring “sexy” manga I’ve ever seen. The premise: Chiaki is the school “prince”, an archery master and all the girls love her. Harumi, who goes to a different school, has a not-very-hidden crush on Chiaki. Chiaki has a very not hidden crush on Harumi’s large breasts. She likes to grope them, and if she can’t do so, she loses motivation in terms of her archery. It’s basically Knight of the Ice with boobs. Theoretically this is a yuri title, but honestly you end up simply angry after seeing Chiaki say over and over, in about fifteen different ways, that she loves Harumi’s boobs, not Harumi. There are various boob-grabbing situations… buying new bras, etc… but really, nothing happens but boob-groping for about 150 pages. It’s certainly a very narrow fetish. I can’t even imagine yuri fans would be pleased, as they’d no doubt tell Harumi to find someone – anyone – better than Chiaki. And the breast-grabbing, given we’re constantly told it’s not about lust or arousal, is not even sexy.

Lust Geass. By Osamu Takahashi. Released in Japan by Kadokawa Shoten, serialization ongoing in the magazine Young Ace. Released in North America by Yen Press. Translated by Sheldon Drzka.

When I started reading these three, I was not expecting the erotic mind control porn story to be the best of the three – by far – but here we are. Souta and Rikka are childhood friends, and he’s in love with her, but can’t quite get the words out. Then one day he finds a mysterious bookstore with occult tomes. Rikka loves occult stuff, so he gets one for her birthday. Now, suddenly, she’s really, really horny, and needs his help to get off… though won’t go all the way. The premise of “cursed book that makes us have sex” is not really new, and you can see the direction this is going. The second volume will no doubt pull in the respectable class president girl, the volume after that the hot teacher, etc. And we also get the “if you have sex with the one you truly love, you’ll die” curse to keep the main pairing apart till death or cancellation do us part. But… honestly? This had the only likeable cast in these three books. Consent is occasionally mentioned, which is surprising given the premise. You get the sense that Souta and Rikka would likely have gotten together relatively soon even without the book. Now, don’t get me wrong, this is not great. It’s possible I’m making it sound better than it is because I read it after the other two. And, well, it’s erotic mind control porn. But this is the only one of these where I though “I might actually get Vol. 2 just to see if the leads stay likeable”. It’s not terrible.

So Lust Geass is worth getting if you’re into that sort of thing, Peter Grill will likely please its very, very narrow demographic of horny teenage boys (likely why Seven Seas rated it Older Teen and not Mature), and Breasts Are My Fav… zzzzzzzz… hm? where was I? Oh, right. No.

To be bluntly honest, I didn't think the day would come soon...I guess I still plan to talk about My Fankids in separate posts with much more detail where I have better built their info...but I guess a definition of each of them my Fankids wouldn't hurt!...I Guess...

(Arranged from oldest to youngest)

Summer (12): Gumi and Yuuma's eldest daughter. A girl who at a jovial age is usually someone responsible and a bit mature, resulting in being the voice of reason in the group and who makes sure to take care of her siblings like the rest of the children. Likewise, she does not take away from the fact that she is someone endearing and who knows how to have fun so as not to stress with her homeworks and schoolworks.

Kankyō (10): Gumi and Yuuma's middle child. He is usually someone sensitive, calm and of few words, Kankyō mainly spends his time living with Souta, Renji and Arashi, and like his older sister, he acts as the voice of reason for these three (I'm sorry I don't have many things to explain about my boy ;-;).

Souta (9): Younger son of Kiyoteru and Meiko. He is a complete contrast to Yukiko, a rebellious and unruly boy who often brings fun to his friends/cousins by unconsciously getting into trouble. Although, it seems Souta does not learn from his lessons, he tries to be a better son for his parents and a good example for his group and the rest of the children so as not to be seen as a bad influence.

Rabenda (7): Gakupo and Luka's eldest daughter. A "flower girl" (forgive the redundancy that her name is Lavender in Japanese), the small lady of her family who loves to play with dolls, have tea parties and dress up like a princess. She loves her parents, siblings, grandparents, uncles, cousins and friends so much and Rabenda would never be able to leave them.

Sachi (6): Gumi and Yuuma's little daughter. Being the little sister of Summer and Kankyō, she is very cared for by her parents as well as her siblings, except that Kankyō is not as "relatively close" to her. Sachi is a very curious girl and asks "why?" her not understanding what happens around her.

Fujiro (4): The second child of Gakupo and Luka. On few occasions he made it known that he is an infant with a big brain, a small prodigy among his family. But Fujiro at the end of the day is a little boy and wants to spend more time with his loved ones and play games, than immerse his brain in books and complicated words.

Nyuto (6 months): Kaito and Miku's baby. Along with Shinichi and Natsumi, he is more cared for by his parents and siblings, considering that he is an infant, his personality does not develop, it is only stated that he is very tender with his family as new people who love have to know.

I could only talk about half of them since I reiterate; the other Fankids belong to @ask-the-vocafamilies and with his permission he let me add them in my universe which means that most of them don't change from their original concept...with three exceptions that stay away from the original Fankids concept of Vocafamilies. I would like to clarify, he also accepts this, so a brief summary of them will also serve for this post:

Yukiko (17): Older daughter of Kiyoteru and Meiko, and older sister of Souta. Unlike the original Yukiko, she is a very shy, insecure girl and is usually very close to her family for fear of talking to other people (with the exception of the other Vocaloids and their children). This is because she grew up almost locked up at home, without going to school in a calm way because Kiyoteru and Meiko were not in the best of moments with their Vocaloid lives...

Shinichi (Aka. Shisui) and Natsumi (Aka. Uzumi) (3 months): Baby twins of Gakupo and Luka as well as the younger siblings of Rabenda and Fujiro...yes...I think that just saying this description gives Let's see what are the ones that have had the greatest change when it comes to integrating them into my universe—

I'm sorry that this will turn out like this, but as I said at the beginning, most likely I will reward you with posts that I do separately and I will have my time to detail and talk better about each of my Fankids in the future. For the moment, you can enjoy these small summaries of each one :')
