Bit of a (late) long-ass personal post, but this past year has been insanely monumental for me and a lot of it, if not almost all of it, was centered around this silly comedy show.
Starting the year adopting the most perfect cat in the world purely because he looked like Agent Jack Bauer, I've ended up meeting amazing people and making great friendships, both online and in person, I met Glenn and Charlie and MEE and Meg (and Humphrey) and Danny?? got my first tattoo, bought way too much whiskey, and I've just really, genuinely enjoyed my time posting on Tumblr, making shit, and writing fic more than I have in half a decade. It's stupid, and sappy, and probably pretty parasocial, but I owe so many of my best experiences this past year not only to the show, but to joining this community. Because I wouldn't have experienced much of any of this if I hadn't jumped the casual fan on r/IASIP ship and washed up ashore here. And being here has improved my life and my mental health in ways I can't even begin to properly express.

All the following center around M!Alear/Alcryst (alearyst? alcrear? Alal? the utterly unhinged suggestion of alal-) because oops My Favorite Dynamic, generally written as standalone
Rutilated- 3.7k, taking place between chapters 14-15, slight focus on events in chapters 10-11. Insomnia from stress turned awkward flirting turned emotional comforting.
Intergrowth- A series of 6 drabbles totaling 2.5k that take place from chapter 7 through post-game in sporadic leaps. Covers a broad spectrum of crushing angst to fluff, arranged chronologically kind of like an outline of the relationship on the side of the main plot, built around the idea of moments where they held hands
Thanatophobia- 1.3k, post-game. Alear has a nightmare because (kiragi vc) war is heck! especially when you’re dragon jesus and go through protagonist bullshit that people somehow expect you to be just Okay With.

Now that being said, Bungie is by far NOT OUT OF THE HELLSCAPE THEY MADE FOR THEMSELVES and this is not a redemption bit for the issues going on in-game and in the community. Im glad this little loose end is starting to get tied off, but a whole lot still hinges upon the last season of Lightfall and Final Shape ...frfr dont even know if im gonna buy FS bc of how fucking ass LF and the two sezns so far are --I am NOT a fan of the change in storytelling and its so fucking ironic that a bungie dev tried to call out Diablo IV as lazy when that dev is helping Bungie to churn out the staleness that has been LF expansion and the subsequent seasons.
Also idc if its not "beyond a shadow of a doubt" but I'm fucking glad the Drifter x Eris shit didnt seem to be passing through. Like if thats your ship --okay, I respect it-- its just for me personally I'm VERY TIRED of games/books/shows shipping two very traumatized/needs-mega-therapy/social outcasts people together. Its not a trope I enjoy and in most cases find kinda disturbing and upsetting that the "only way" for a trauma-ridden character to have a significant bond with another character is via the fact the other character is also extremely traumatized. Idk it just feels a bit like wallowing in the phase of the character's life-moments as a victim to what traumatized them. A bit "broken beyond repair" still able to function as long as their love interest is someone of equal or similar trauma je ne se qoi (ignore my french) that is just very unappealing to me

OH about the finale at the shrine, this completely slipped my notice when we were talking about it, but Ichi says he's "reporting" Jo's verdict to both Arakawa and Masato. It's just not translated that way.
Not too big of a difference (well, it is to me, but I'm insane), but if it was highlighting anything, I'd guess it's probably Masato's change of heart. It would've been fair for Ichi to assume Masato wouldn't care and only "report" to Arakawa, but in the context of Ichi doing his damnedest to show Masato they all love him, it works in terms of, "Maybe I made him reconsider, and maybe now he would care."
Also... I'm looking at it in a "measured" way, since the chapter trophies are always just standard "Nth Chapter Cleared" messages that the localization team just spices up for us, but there's something I find really poignant about the Chapter 13 trophy being worded as "Fate of Our Fathers." The pluralization of both the noun and pronoun. Realizations that come too late.
Of course, Masato definitely didn't "know" and had no real reason to suspect it, but the Arakawas have this bizarre subconscious almost-psychic link. So even if he doesn't really think so, there's this sense that Ichi "might as well" be Arakawa's "real" son because they're so much more alike. And maaaybe he felt that way about Jo and himself at one point, because (as we've discussed) there has to be a reason Jo was Masato's "favorite."
