🦢 The story of The Ugly Duckling has always fascinated me. The misfortune of the baby swan not knowing where he belongs, being mistreated by his peers and longing for somewhere to belong struck a cord every time I heard or read the story. 🌿 When I was still small, I used to ask my parents why the ducks and other pond creatures treated the baby swan as they did. Sure he was different, however he lived in the same pond as the others did; he had wings like them and a beak as well - wasn't he then the same? ✨ My parents couldn't really answer my question until I was a bit older and understood how humans treat each other and that the reason they do it is ignorance. I drew the lines between our societies and the story of The Ugly Duckling and understood why the other creatures were mean to him, however the ending had quite a big shift in the treatment of the baby swan... He grew up and suddenly the other swans took him in as their own and only then did the ducks see that he was different. Different but still beautiful. 💚 • ⛰️ As I read the story at a fairly young age and then again as an adult, I could see how differently I perceived the same story with the knowledge of our culture. The subtle nuances the author wrote into the story are still present today, over 150 years after the story was first written. And I don't know whether to admire Hans Christian Andersen for his ingenuity and penmanship or feel troubled that after all this time we can still see the effect being different has on the people around us. 🌎 • 🦢 What do you think: should being different mean exclusion from social clicks or not?
