Maddie will requested Tails attention when he made a grumpy face and look away, sometimes for a non particular reason (or if he's hiding someting) and that end up with a fluffy cuddle. She's doing that with Knuckles and Sonic too but that end in a different way.
At first I thought this was a headcanon you were telling me, which I believe it is(?) but upon thinking it over, I decided "ooh that could be a cute little drabble focusing on Maddie and Tails" and then this little one shot was created. At least it wasn't a angsty idea this time 😅
If it seems messy, it probably is because I literally wrote majority of this in the span of a day with very little editing, so fair warning.

Sometimes, a quick cuddle can solve any problem.

"Tails? Tails, can you please look at me?" Her voice was close on the verge of exasperation as she stood underneath the door frame leading into the living room, seeing the fox’s ears turn towards her but he still didn't look in her direction and wrapped his arms tighter around his legs, scooting back until his back hit the corner of the couch and buried his head tucked between his legs and arms.
Maddie took a deep inhale and let out a slow exhale, so it was one of those days huh? But now it was with the kid who does this sort of thing the least of the 3 boys and she didn’t even know how to handle it.
The youngest member had sunken into this state after Tom and her had to tell him to do something else other than working on his gadgetry up in the garage. After the 3rd attempt of telling him however, Tom took matters into his own hands and gathered up most of them that were scattered around the house and locked them in the garage until further notice, after making sure the kid didn't have an electronic device for unlocking doors or locks he could use.
Of course, the decision didn't go well and it lead to some talking back and forth until Tails gave up and went into his current state, to where even Sonic attempting to lift his spirits didn't even work.
Afterwards, Tom had taken off for an emergency call while Sonic and Knuckles had volunteered to help and went with him, Tails didn't even move so that left Maddie at the house with a now quiet, moody 8 year old who probably thinks she is the most evil person to ever exist, which definitely isn't the case but the point still stands.
The last thing she wanted to do is to get on his case again about the way he was acting, telling him to knock it off and to suck it up like any other kid that would act this way, but she knew that it wouldn't help anyway.
Compared to Sonic, who had stayed with them for a time before he had a mood swing like this, she still didn't know him, know him well enough to see his full personality, his many likes and dislikes, the way he deals with situations like this, for all she knew he could be acting like this due to him never dealing with this before, which was all the more reason why she didn't want to be too hard on him.
Oh well, like her dad had always told her, it doesn't hurt to try to step into unknown circumstances.
Maddie idly walked towards the couch and sat on the far end, seeing Tails' head lift up at her from the corner of her eye before seeing one of his eyes peek out at her. Crossing her legs, she pretended to not look in his direction, instead going to grab the remote to the TV and turning it on.
She kept her attention on the screen while she heard him shuffling and felt the cushions dip as he moved around. After a moment, she peeked over to expect him to be in the same place but was almost spooked to see him sitting so close to her that their knees were almost touching. He kept his head down and kept his hands on his knees as he sat on the edge of the cushion, Maddie watched as his body started to become more tense, his shoulders scrunched up closer to his neck while his hands gripped at his knees and tails twitched in sync.
She began to reach out but stopped as he whipped his head up, eyes wide. "I'm sorry!"
Maddie blinked at the sudden change of disposition, listening intently as he continued. "I'm so sorry that made you and Tom be mad at me! I understand why you guys took my machines away, I was going to but...I just felt so mad that you took it without just letting me do it on my own first!" Tails paused, his voice becoming shaky.
“I didn't want to be mad at you and I didn't want to take it out on you guys which is why I was so quiet this whole time. I just....I didn't want to mess anything else up after that." He finishes as bows down his head away from her, rubbing his eyes at what she knew was unshed tears.
Maddie could feel her heart practically break hearing him just talk a mile a minute to her in such a way. She knew that he could have felt a little bad with what happened, but she didn't expect it was getting to him this much. What he said next however, she wasn't even prepared to hear come out of his mouth.
"...please don't make me leave. I promise I won't do it anymore. I won't do it again, please."
At that moment, whether it was her inner instincts or something else entirely, all she knew was that this kid, regardless of him being an alien from another world, was still a kid. A kid just like Sonic is and needed her more than ever right now.
Without a second thought, she slowly wrapped her arms around his small frame, scooping him up in a secure yet gentle hold and placing him on her lap, nuzzling her chin in between his ears and holding a hand behind his head.
Tails tensed up at the sudden action, his whole body froze up as if he were lost all memory fucntions of his limbs and could only be very still. He shut his eyes tightly and braced for any next action she might do, she hasn't said anything after he gave his statement and could only imagine what emotionally damaging words she could throw at him while having him in her arms. After all, it hasn't been the first time it's happened....
A soft hand touching his back made him flinch violently, the fingers of the hand stilled against the middle of his back for a few moments before feeling the palm gently caressing and moving up and down. It moved in a motion he'd reconize but had only felt once in his short eight years of life, at least from what he could remember.
It made him feel safe, safe to where nothing was going to hurt or get to him, not even the person who was currently initiating the gesture. He quickly gripped onto one of her arms, his sniffling quickly turning into muffled crying as he buried his face into the fabric of her shirt. He wasn’t sure why he was reacting this way, but he couldn't stop it as soon as it bubbled up and overflowed like a stopped up drain.
As she held him, she took notice of the weight she felt in her arms. He was so light, he felt so small, smaller than she originally expected him to be upon first glance, she could practically feel the trembling coming from his tiny body so much that she was worried that he would end up having a panic attack. Maddie continued to rub his back and rocked her body back and forth, trying to calm him down.
"Okay, hey. Hey, I need you to breathe with me Tails, okay? Just stop and take a breath, can you do that for me?” She felt him nod slightly and he slowly pulled away, his now red eyed, tear stained face looking up at her, still trembling. “Just copy what I do, breathe in,” She took a slow inhale. “Then exhale.” Slow exhale out.
She continued as Tails copied her with shaky breathing till his trembling subsidies and his breathing becomes normal, he leans into her embrace as she continues to hold him, he continued to hold onto her arm while she began to stroke her hand between the fuzz of his ears, a similar notion that she would use on Sonic whenever he would need help calming down.
Once his breathing became more steady, she wiped the tears from his eyes and kept her hand on his back, letting him catch his breath. “Tails…why do you think we would make you leave?”
The fox let out a sniffle, wiping at one of his eyes again and bowing down his head. “Because of the way I was acting, because I didn’t listen to you after you told me to go outside. I…thought you and Tom would kick me out afterwards because of how I was behaving.”
Maddie brought a hand to his chin and lifted up his head. “Sweetie, just because we had a small disagreement doesn’t mean that we would make you leave. We were more than elated knowing that you and Knuckles wanted to stay with us, Sonic was even more than excited.”
“But, you guys looked so mad before,” Tails interrupted. “And I heard Tom say to Sonic that if he keeps misbehaving that you both will throw him out out of the house, I'd thought you would do the same to me."
Maddie laughed softly, shaking her head. "That’s what he says to him every other week, he doesn't actually mean that. Tom says that because Sonic is always all over the place and we can never keep up with that hyper personality of his." She joked lightly, feeling the tension ease up as Tails giggled along with her.
"Trust me when I say that if we were able to put up with him, then we can definitely put up with whatever you and Knuckles can throw at us, even with the small things."
"Really?" He said with a bit of uncertainty.
"Yes," She adjusted her hold and clasped his shoulders, giving him a mocking glare. "Sooo, next time when we say it's time to take a break from the electronics, it's time to take a break from them. Okay? No more of this Mr. Pouty Grumpy face thing going on or I'll have to go "bad cop" on you."
Maddie finishes by quickly scribbling her fingers against his neck, he scrunched up his shoulders and a stream of giggles poured out as he batted her hands away. She laughs along with him and a few moments of quiet pass by, only the sound if the TV still playing filling the silence.
"So, do you feel a bit better now?"
He gave a nod. "A little."
"Good." She lifted Tails off her lap and checked her watch. "Well, it's been a bit but you still need to have some time off the gadgets for now. Just until the hour's up."
Tails let out deep sigh but decided to agree to the terms. "Okay."
"If you want, we have some books and puzzles stored away that you might find fun to pass the time. There's plenty of books here since Sonic finishes them so quickly."
Tails' ears perked up at the offer. "Ooh, yes please."
"Okay, I'll be right back." She got up from the couch, walking only a few steps before a small tug on her pant leg stopped her. She saw Tails, still holding onto her leg, his voice sounding timid.
"Uh, Miss Maddie?"
"Hmm?"
"Um....can you just..." he struggled to find words, refusing to look at Maddie in the eyes and fiddled with his fingers. She gently laid a hand at the top of his head, making him pause.
"It's okay, go ahead."
"Can....you give me another hug?" he asked shyly, she could see his cheeks turning red and looked up at her, awaiting an answer.
She didn't question him, she simply smiled and held out her arms to him. He jumped back onto them, wrapping his arms around her neck, noticeably squeezing harder, as if she would dissappear if he let go. Maddie ran hand on the back of his head reassuringly, feeling his grip loosen a bit as she adjusted her hold. "You sure you’re okay?"
A small wag from his double appendages appendages answered her question. "Yeah, I'm much better actually."

Great Sonic 2 fics Masterpost
With the release of the new Sonic movie came a resurgence in fan content! There’s already a lot of great fanfiction based on the new film, and I want to share some of my favorites.
Making Space by @humanityinahandbag and @samthefrank
Pretty well known, but I just had to mention it. This story is so cute and well-written! Not only does it have that lovely Wachowski family fluff, but it also delves into that difficult adjustment period that comes with no longer being an only child. Please read if you somehow haven’t already!
Sonic Tonic by HelloThere3306
A series of (currently) six one-shot stories about everyone’s favorite echidna! Each story explores Knuckles’ struggles adapting to life on Earth, as well as his relationship to his new family. The characterization is excellent, probably the best portrayal of Movie!Knuckles I’ve seen! Great insight into echidna culture too!
Ad Astra, Per Aspera by  @year2000electronics
While I love the ship, I’ve never been big on Stonebotnik fanfiction...however, this one won me over! This ongoing story follows Robotnik and Stone after the events of Sonic 2, becoming fugitives and going on an adventure where they’ll grow closer than ever before. The relationship perfectly portrayed, and very faithful to Robotnik’s character. I also love the depth this story gives Agent Stone, he really gets to shine here.
Echidna Warriors Don't Get Ill by @true-blue-sonic
Who doesn’t love a good sick fic? This one is about Knuckles falling ill and being helped by Maddie. There’s something so heartwarming about stories like these, seeing Knuckles being part of a family, finally allowing himself to be a kid after so many years...what else could you ask for?

Family Ties
Read it on Ao3
Tails slid the rental skates off his feet.  They were just a bit too small.  He’d have to ask Mom to get another pair.  That was probably okay, though.  She had said to let her know if the size was wrong.  It wouldn’t annoy her if it wasn’t.  Probably.
He looked up and watched as she handed Knuckles his own pair of skates.  Tails noticed right away that the skates had laces.  Knuckles looked at them and Tails could practically hear him thinking ‘what am I supposed to do with these?’  He looked between her and the skates and back, but she was sitting down and pulling on her own.
Knuckles looked out at the rest of the skaters and Tails did too. There were only a few other families (who were obviously trying not to stare at them), but as far as Tails could see, everyone else's skates had laces.  But there must’ve been non-lace shoes, right?  Mom had just accidentally gotten the wrong kind for Knuckles too.
Tails watched closely.  If Knuckles pointed out the mistake, he could probably tack on that he needed different skates as well.  He felt more comfortable with that.  Knuckles opened his mouth to say something when–
“Sonic, wait!  You have to switch your shoes first!”  Mom got up and hobbled off wearing only one skate.
“I wanna see if I can run in place on the ice!”
“I think you’re just as likely to run right into the side of the rink.” Dad steered Sonic away from the ice.
“Aw, come on.  Just one lap?  I’ll go so fast they won’t even see me–”
It looked like this was going to wind up being a debate, Tails thought.
Knuckles watched them, fiddling with one of his backpack straps.  That had been a debate too.  Mom was worried if he carried the Master Emerald out on the ice he’d fall and hurt himself landing on it.  Knuckles refused to leave it behind or even far out of sight.  In the end, she’d allowed him to carry it in a backpack in exchange for him giving in to their other debate: whether or not he should wear a coat.  (Tails didn’t mind having to wear his own jacket and scarf though, it was chilly here and he didn’t have his winter fur yet.)
Knuckles glanced his way.  He watched as Knuckles’ eyes slid down to the skates in Tails’ hand.  At least they were in this together.  Maybe they could solve the problem together too.
Tails hopped down from the chair, sliding his shoes back on.  “Um… I’m going to get some different skates,” he said before he could overthink it.  “Do you want me to ask for snap shoes for you?”
Knuckles scowled and stood.  “I can ask myself,” he grumbled.
But Knuckles let Tails lead the way from the stands back up to the rental counter.  Which was weird.  Usually it was Tails following as Knuckles loudly declared to the cashier: ‘My brother requested NO pickles!’  Instead, Knuckles kept looking around, which made Tails feel like he had to look around too.  One thing he noticed: no one was wearing snap skates.
Tails hated talking to cashiers or… any customer service kind of person.  It made him anxious.  But since Knuckles was being weirdly quiet, it was up to him to do the talking.
“E-excuse me,” he asked, standing on his tip-toes to see over the counter edge.  “Can we swap lace skates for some snap skates?  And switch sizes?”  He set his skates on the counter.  He hoped that was okay.
Humans always either acted like Tails was some weirdo freak… or that he was really cute.  The guy behind the counter smiled real wide and Tails knew that here it was the latter.
The clerk leaned over the edge of the counter so Tails could step back and didn’t have to stand on his toes.  “Hey, little guy!”  He said in a candy-sweet voice.  “You said you want ‘snap skates’?  What’re those?”
“Oh, um… you know… like snap shoes?”
The clerk looked confused.
“Um… button shoes?  They’ve got little magnets in them?”
Now he looked even more confused.  Tails hadn’t expected this.  He glanced back at Knuckles.
“I think they do not have any,” Knuckles said.  “It is alright.”
Tails wrung his hands, his tails twisting around each other.  That wasn’t right… Knuckles never gave up when Tails said he’d just wipe off the pickle juice.  Tails couldn’t give up now!  He turned back to the clerk.  “Aren’t there any skates without laces?”
“Oh, like velcro?  Sure, little guy.  What size do you need?”
Both of them perked up at that.  Tails looked excitedly back at Knuckles.  His big brother stepped forward, holding up his laced skates.  “I require an adult human male’s ‘size twelve’.”
“Oh.”  The clerk leaned back and looked at Knuckles in surprise.  He wasn’t giving him the ‘I think you’re a freak’ look, but he definitely didn’t think Knuckles was cute either.  “Uh… sorry, man, we only have velcro skates in kid sizes.”
Knuckles’ shoulders slumped along with Tails’.  “Um… you don’t have any other kinds of no-lace shoes?”  Tails asked.
Knuckles had already turned and walked away before the clerk could finish apologizing again.  Tails wavered between following and staying to mind his manners and thank the man before he remembered he needed to switch his own skates.  As soon as he had the new size he hurried back to the stands, feeling extra aware of all the strangers glancing his way.
Knuckles was sitting with the family again, his skates on the floor beside him.  He watched Mom watch Sonic tie his skates.  “Remember to get them good and tight,” she said.  “It’ll hurt your ankles if they’re loose.  And tuck the extra string into the lower straps–yeah, like that–that way you won’t accidentally trip on them!”
“Yeah, yeah, I got it Mom.”
Dad looked up from tying his own laces and saw Tails standing there holding his skates.  “You need help, bud?”
“Oh!  No, I’m okay.”  Tails hopped up to sit next to Knuckles and pulled off his shoes.
He thought Knuckles would ask for help.  Or… more likely Mom or Dad would offer.  But Knuckles didn’t say anything and–
“Last one on the ice is a rotten egg–and it’s even a fair fight ‘cause I cannot run in these things!”  Sonic yelled.
“Hang on, let me put my purse in our locker.”
“Should we put our shoes in there?”  Dad asked.
“Oh yeah!”  Sonic said.  “I was just hearing on the news about this ‘Stinky Shoe Bandit’!  Better be careful, Dad!”
“I doubt anyone is going to steal anybody’s shoes.  And even if they do, we can always buy new shoes!  But my wallet is definitely getting put away.”  Mom hobbled off toward the lockers and Dad hurried to follow Sonic.
Nobody remembered to check on Knuckles.
Tails stared down at his socked feet and the skates with their long, skinny laces.  He realized with mounting dread that he might need to offer Knuckles help.  Knuckles!  He was good at pretty much everything… except anything to do with technology.  But other than that, he could do anything!  Except… he couldn’t tie laces.
But some species just weren’t built for stuff like that!  Their fingers were too short or their claws too long or they had webbed fingers or… whatever!  The point was it happened plenty on other planets and there were usually other options available.  Apparently not here though.  Here, it looked like it wasn’t something people really thought about.  Maybe that was why Knuckles was being so quiet… across the galaxy, people would look at his mitts and his snap shoes and know.
Here Knuckles had to admit he needed help.  And he never needed help.  He was the one who gave help.  That’s probably why Mom and Dad hadn’t thought to offer… and why he wasn’t asking now.  And why he’d probably just get annoyed with Tails if he tried to help.
His conflicted thoughts must have shown on his face.  “What is wrong?”  Knuckles asked.
Tails looked up in surprise.  “Uh…”  A perfect lie suddenly hit him.  “I need help!”
Knuckles perked up.  Always ready to assist.
That thought had Tails plucking up his courage.  “Tying these skates is kind of tricky…” he said.  “Could I practice with you first?”
“Oh.”  Knuckles frowned slightly.  Tails could see the gears turning in his head.  Was tying skate laces really that much different from shoelaces?  After a second, Knuckles shrugged.  He didn’t know enough about tying laces to call Tails’ bluff.  “You may practice on me,” he said.
Tails hopped down from his seat, breathing a subtle sigh of relief.  Knuckles snapped the magnetic tops off his shoes and pushed them aside with his foot.  Then pulled on his skates.  Once they were on his feet, he stopped and looked up at Tails.
“L-leave it to me!”  Tails replied, standing up straight and proud before he knelt down and got to work cinching the laces.
He pulled the strings tight around Knuckles’ ankles just like Mom had said.  “How’s that feel?” He asked.  “Too tight?  Too loose?”
Knuckles rolled his ankle a little.  “It is sufficient,” he said.
Tails got back to it.  It was a little weird tying shoelaces from this side of the shoe.  Plus Knuckles was watching him like a hawk the whole time.  Tails had to restart once, which probably helped sell his lie that he needed practice.  He managed to get the first skate tied before there was a loud thump! on the dasher boards across from their seats.
“Wait, Knuckles, is Tails tying your shoelaces for you?”  Sonic cried as his face popped over the top of the boards.  “Oh my god… can you not tie your shoes?!”
Knuckles’ quills bristled.  “Of course, I can!”  He said too quickly and too loud.  He was such a bad liar.
“Wait, what?”  Dad asked as he came up behind Sonic.
“It is nothing,” Knuckles said at the same time as Sonic announced:
“Knuckles can’t tie his shoes!”
“He can’t?”  Oh dear, Mom was back too.
Knuckles crossed his arms with a huff.
“You can speak like a billion languages but you can’t tie your shoelaces?”
Knuckles gave Sonic a dirty look, but before he could say anything, Tails piped up:  “That’s not nice, Sonic!”
He immediately wilted as his whole family looked at him in surprise.  Oh gosh… he’d scolded Sonic!  He’d just been so surprised that Sonic would tease Knuckles about something he couldn’t change… But of course now he thought about it, Sonic grew up around humans.  He probably thought it was a ‘knowing’ issue and not a mechanical one.
Ears folded against his head he dedicated his full attention to tying Knuckles’ laces as quickly as possible.  If he’d looked up he would’ve seen the very pointed look Mom was giving Sonic.
“Uh… okay, point taken.  Um.  Sorry, Knux?”
Knuckles just let out a grunt.  He was done with this conversation.  But Mom wasn’t just yet:
“I’m sorry too, honey.  I should’ve checked if you needed any help.”
“I don’t need help,” Knuckles said.  “Tails was only practicing his lace-tying skills on me.”
“So… Do you know how to tie laces?”  Sonic asked.
“Do you know how to shut up?”
“Okay, neither of you two talk to each other until Tails has his skates on,” Mom declared.
Oh gosh… Tails wasn’t sure if that put pressure on him to go fast or slow.  He tied them quickly, just in case.
“Fine!”  Sonic huffed and disappeared over the boards once more.
“Fine,” Knuckles grumbled.  He stood from the chair.  And nearly fell over.
“Oh, careful!”  Mom sounded like she was trying not to laugh as she grabbed his arm and helped him stand upright.
“These are hard to walk in!”
“Yeah, they’re not really built for walking in, but they’re perfect once you’re on the ice!”  Mom knelt and checked the lacing on Knuckles’ shoes.
“Good job, bud,” she said to Tails.  She checked Tails’ laces too.  With her back to Knuckles she met Tails’ eye and whispered.  “Thanks for looking out for your brother.”
Tails flushed under his fur.
“What was that?”  Knuckles demanded.
“I said maybe when we get home, we can all practice tying laces together?”
Knuckles frowned.  “No, thank you,” he said.  He didn’t elaborate further, just crossed his arms over his chest and looked at Tails expectantly.
Tails’ eyes flicked between Knuckles and Mom and back.
He didn’t say that Knuckles should explain a bit more to Mom, but he definitely thought it.  Knuckles must have picked up on it; his expression shifted into a scowl.  When he turned back to Mom his mouth was twisted into a grimace.  He held up a mitt.  “These are not really built for tying shoelaces… But they are perfect for punching!  Also digging!  And swimming and climbing too!”  He bumped his fist over his puffed up chest.
“Okay…”  Mom said.  She looked down at Knuckles’ gloves and then her eyes slid to his discarded shoes.
Knuckles must have felt like he’d sufficiently proven echidna capability, because he wibble-wobble-walked off to the gap in the boards with his head held high.
Tails glanced back at Mom and saw her picking up Knuckles’ snap shoes curiously.
“Um… Are you coming, too?”
“Oh, yes. You go on ahead.  I’ll be right there.”
There was a bit of a clog at the rink entrance.  Sonic was taking a little bit of extra time figuring out skating.  He clung to the railing while Dad ran through the basics. Knuckles stood at the threshold, listening in.  Tails came beside him and realized that he couldn’t reach the railing.  Uh-oh.  Well, that was alright.  He could learn without the figurative training wheels.
Knuckles let out an annoyed hum and Tails instinctively cringed.  Was Knuckles annoyed that they’d been caught by Sonic?  That he had to explain himself to Mom?
“You are too short,” Knuckles said.  He grabbed the edge of the baseboard with one mitt and held out the other.  “Hold on to me.”
“Oh… thanks Knuckles.”  Tails took the offered mitt.  Knuckles’ mitt was practically as big as Tail’s whole torso so his hand looked extra teeny tiny in his older brother’s giant fist.  With Knuckles leading the way, they took their first unsteady steps out onto the ice.  It was nice that Knuckles had offered to help.  Made him feel… the opposite of how being scared of annoying him felt.
“Oh, Tails!”  Tom called from where he was trying to get Sonic to stand right.  “Do you want a bucket?”
“What?”  Tails looked up to see another little kid scooting around the middle of the rink, using a stack of upside-down buckets to keep his balance.  The kid was staring at them of course, but a sharp look from Knuckles made him stop.
Tails appreciated the ingenuity of the bucket but… he looked up at Knuckles who looked equally unimpressed with the technique.  “Um… I’m okay,” he said.
“You sure?”  Tom asked.  “The bucket won’t fall down and take you with it.”
“I will not fall!”  Knuckles said, outraged.
He fell immediately.  Then Sonic laughed so hard that he fell too.  Tails avoided the pile-up only because Knuckles let go of him.
“Alright, we will try this again!”  Knuckles said, determined.  “Hold my tail and I can use my arms for balance.”  He turned and pointed his funny crooked tail in Tail’s direction.
“Uh… won’t that hurt if I fall and pull on it?”
“Of course not!” Knuckles boasted.  “The bend is for little ones learning to walk to hold onto!”
“Really?”  Tom and Sonic asked as one.  Sonic’s skepticism was undercut by the way he was slowly and unintentionally doing the splits against the boards.  Tom rushed to rescue him.
“That is what my father said…” Knuckles trailed off like it’d only just occurred to him that might’ve been just a little kid story.  “Regardless, my tail is very sturdy.  Much stronger than yours.  You can pull all you need.”
The little tip wiggled like it was waving to Tails to go on ahead and grab it.  Tails hesitantly took hold.  It felt like a rock covered in bristles… just like all the rest of his brother’s ‘one million percent muscle’ body.
“Okay, I think I’m ready to try again!”  Sonic said.  He pushed forward, moving along with half his usual grace.  Tom kept close to his side, glancing back at Knuckles and Tails and looking around for Mom.
Knuckles took a few experimental steps forward, dragging Tails after him.
Tails wobbled and bobbed, his tails whipping this way and that as he tried to keep his balance.  Knuckles glanced back at him over his shoulder and he feared for a moment that he was tugging too much.  “You know, you do fly with your tails.  They must be quite strong!  Have you ever tried lifting weights with them?”
“Oh, um…”  Tails' knees shook as he tried to keep his balance.  “I’ve lifted you while flying, does that count?”
And then Knuckles actually smiled!  Tails was so surprised–he could count on one hand the number of times he’d made Knuckles smile.  Distracted, he stumbled and wobbled, trying to keep his balance while his feet kept moving without him.  Even when he thought for sure he would fall, Knuckles’ tail was completely firm and still.
“Lean forward more,” Knuckles said.  “And bend your knees a bit.”
“What he said,” Dad added.  “It helps if you lower your center of gravity.”
Tails thought his center of gravity was easily the lowest in the whole rink, but he did what they said.  It did help.
Knuckles focused his attention on the ice below them, taking smooth, short steps.  Tails watched his feet and tried to move the same way.  Knuckles’ movements became more confident, but Tails was still unsteady.  He looked up at his big brother’s broad back and watched how his dreads swayed from side to side over the back of his backpack,  purposefully shifting his weight with each step.  Tails mimicked his movements, stepping in time with Knuckles.  Immediately his movements felt smoother.  He was getting the hang of it!
Mom skated up beside them.  Like Dad, she didn’t need to hold the wall at all.
Dad looked over expectantly.
“I put Knuckles’ shoes in our locker.”
“Because of the Stinky Shoe Bandit?”  Sonic asked as he did a funny T-pose shuffle across the ice.
“Because I realized his shoes would be harder to replace if someone decided they wanted to steal shoes–”
“Because they’re so stink–”
“Because they’re special shoes from outer space.”
Knuckles puffed up at that.  “My shoes have received a place of high honor!”
Sonic rolled his eyes so hard he lost his balance and had to cling to the wall.  “That’s literally nothing to brag about,” he said.
Knuckles huffed.  “Well then, how about this?”  He let go of the wall and pushed away, skating around Dad and Sonic and pulling Tails after him.
“Woah!”  Tails cried out in surprise and delight.  He hung on tight, keeping his posture like Dad and Knuckles suggested.  Knuckles was going fast enough to blow his bangs back and Tails tummy flipped whenever his balance shifted too quickly.  But it was fun!  Like flying, but even easier!
When he realized Knuckles wasn’t going to return to grabbing the wall, Tails focused on copying his movements.  It was just like dancing with Sonic–all he had to do was follow his brother's lead!  Halfway around the rink, he had it down.
“What the heck, you hadn’t even heard of ice skating this morning!” Sonic said as the two of them passed him a second time.
“I am a fast learner,”  Knuckles gloated without stopping.
“Tell that to our last two microwaves!”
“I cannot hear you because of how much faster than you I am going!”
The third time they passed Sonic, Tails felt confident enough to slowly let go of Knuckles’ tail.  His older brother looked over his shoulder, slowing as Tails came up beside him.  He wobbled a little, but stayed upright.
“You are a quick learner too!”  Knuckles praised.
Tails flushed under his fur.  “Heh, I um… I had a good teacher.”
There was a loud thumping and scuffing sound and they both looked over and watched as Sonic hurried across the center of the rink, pushing an overturned bucket in front of him.  Halfway through he jumped up and sat on top, letting his momentum carry him.
Knuckles and Tails stopped as Sonic drifted to a halt in front of them.  “I have decided,” he said magnanimously.  “Since you two are both so slow off the ice: I will be a gentleman and let you take the W here.”
Knuckles shot Tails a cocky grin.  “Perhaps I should teach Sonic now too.”
Sonic leaned back on his bucket with a frown.  “How come I can’t tease you about the shoelaces, but you can tease me about ice skating?”
Tails suppressed a wince.  Knuckles probably wouldn’t like the reminder.  But Knuckles must have been having too good a time, because he actually answered: “Because my fingers cannot bend that way, but your feet work just fine.”
“Touche.”
“Also I was not teasing that time.  I thought it might be more helpful to receive training from someone more similarly proportioned to you than Tom.”
“‘Similarly proportioned’,” Sonic repeated.  He looked Knuckles up and down then looked at Tails.  “Okay, maybe between the two of you.”
“Tails can help too!”
“I can?”  Tails didn’t think he was that good yet.
“Yes, you are very good at being a helpful brother!”  Knuckles smiled at him and there was a knowing gleam in his eye.  Maybe Tails’ lie earlier hadn’t been that good after all.  But Knuckles didn’t seem mad at all, he actually seemed appreciative!
“Alright, I’ll allow the both of you to help me.  But first!” Sonic tipped his head to the side and Tails followed his gaze to see Mom and Dad skating along the wall, holding hands while Mom showed something to Dad on her phone.
Sonic shifted on the bucket so he was seated squarely and held out both hands.  “You two can pull me!”
“And that will help you learn?”  Knuckles asked.
“Nope, but if you pull me super fast and let go I’ll go flying and it’ll be awesome!  But we aren’t supposed to do it so that means we can only do it once.”
***
“One more picture!  Sonic demanded as they stepped off the ice.
Tails fumbled after him.  It felt weird walking after skating so long!
“One sec!”  Dad said, pulling his skates off.
Mom had already taken lots of pictures (some very sneakily while the three of them had been goofing off on the ice), but she and Dad seemed to be game for any photo opportunity where Sonic would voluntarily stay still.
Sonic was busying himself taking a bunch of silly selfies with the bucket when Tails noticed Knuckles sitting on the bench behind Dad.  The corners of his mouth slipped down as he looked down at his skates.  He probably couldn’t untie his shoes either.
Mom appeared, kneeling by Knuckles’ feet with a smile.
“Let me help you get those off,” she said.
Knuckles’ expression crumpled into a pout and for a second it looked like he was going to insist on doing it himself.  Mom handed him his snap shoes.  “Also here’s these back from the honored locker.”
“Ah!  My shoes return, victorious!”
“What did they win?”  Mom grabbed one of his skates.
“Most important shoes!”
She laughed, undoing the knot and uncinching the strings in quick, smooth motions.  “Dad and I were thinking about getting some hot cocoa, what do you think?”
“I think that I like cocoa.  And it will help to warm you up.”
“Warm me up?”
“Both of you!  You fuss over us to wear these–” he pulled at his jacket “--over our fur when you have no fur of your own!  I worry, you know.”
Mom beamed.  “Thank you,” she said.  “That’s sweet of you to worry.”  She patted his ankles.  “And you’re right, I could use some warming up!  Get your shoes changed and we’ll go get in line!”
Knuckles looked down to see Mom already had his skates undone.  He looked like he’d hardly realized when she’d done it.  Honestly Tails was impressed, but Mom liked to tell stories about vets needing fast hands so he shouldn’t be surprised.
“Hey Tails!”  Sonic appeared in front of him, pushing the bucket into his hands.  In a second he was behind him, hands under Tails’ arms, and zooming the both of them over to Knuckles.
“One last picture!” Sonic ordered.  “Us and Bucket Buddy!”
“I agree, we should commemorate Sonic’s noble steed.” Knuckles patted the top of the bucket.  “Thank you for throwing Sonic into the wall.”
“I’m pretty sure that was you.  Using your strength when I said not to–”
“I did not!  It must have been Tails.”
“What?!”
“Alright, I’m ready,” Dad said as he pulled out his phone.
Sonic leaned in on one side as Knuckles leaned into the other.  The air was quite cool but Tails felt very cozy with his brothers on either side.
“Smile!”  Dad said.
And Tails did.

Now I dont mind too much if Shadow ends up joining the Wachowski family (Im kinda hoping Shadow gets taken in by Stone, if hes let off the hook for one reason or another, or by Wade. I think Wade adopting an emo pre-teen would be funny (sonic is 12 in my head, at least in STH2))
But whatever family he does join, if it happens, i want him to force them into getting a cat. Cuz come on, hes totally a cat person. And no im not projecting ACTUALLY.
Also him not being taken in by the Wachowskis makes for more sonadow plausibility (/pos) cuz then they wouldnt have the same "parents" and have this weird sibling thing going on.
I also doubt he would want to live with them after all of the events that will go down. And I also doubt he would like them enough to willfully be taken in by them anyway.
He could also, which i think is what they might do, be taken by G.U.N, because he's technically government property right? Idk how they're gonna do his lore in the movies tho.
I doubt Rouge and Omega are gonna be there, maybe Amy will appear (i hope she does, she really should've been introduced earlier but it is what it is, if they couldnt they couldnt whatever), which makes me sad cuz i LOVE team dark and their trio and sibling like relationships im a bit of a sucker for that shit.
Also wondering if they will include the Black Arms DNA and if they will portray it in the movie (i doubt it but one can dream(the portrayal i mean, im 50/50 sure on them actually including it)). I love Shadow's aspect of being two different kinds of aliens.

Sonic the Hedgehog Movie!Knuckles the Echidna x g/n!reader TW: cursing, implies violence, injury, blood, bruised limbs, much angst, comfort and fluff, happy ending, SPOILERS FOR THE SONIC MOVIES Word Count: 10.4K
Summary: You never thought you would find yourself living in the same house as a walking, talking echidna. Yet, as you adjust to this new life, secrets begin to unravel, for better, or for worse.
Side note: I write sonic the hedgehog fanfiction because I am mentally ill, I am not mentally ill because I write sonic the hedgehog fanfiction.
I cannot believe this is actually one of my better works of fiction.

Living with Knuckles was an… interesting experience to say the least. “Jarring” is the word you would probably use to describe it, along with “pleasant”.
Never in your life had you ever encountered something like him. And with Knuckles being a echidna and all, that fact was pretty unsurprising.
When you first met the guy, it took a lot of self control and convincing from Tom to not go and bash your head against the nearest hard surface. The hedgehog was one thing, he was a one-off. Tails was another, he was kind, kinda cute, and helpful so he got a pass. But another one? And he's big and scary? AND he can beat the shit outta you? Needless to say, you went home and took an ibuprofen.
Jokes aside, he was off-putting at the beginning. To you, at least. While Sonic felt comfortable in forgiving the harm the warrior had caused almost instantaneously, you weren’t so easy-going. Not that you had held any kind of long lasting hatred for what Knuckles had done, but rather it was simply a matter of time and understanding. And understand you did, with the help of Sonic, Tails, and even the echidna himself. It turned out that hearing it straight from the horse's mouth was an effective way of realizing the complexity of the situation Eggman had put the lot of them in, especially Knuckles.
And with that, and the promise of friendship between the hedgehog and the echidna, suspicions of Knuckles’ character disappeared just as fast as they arrived. You didn’t plan on holding his mistakes above his head (like it would do anything remotely close to helping relations heal), for his own past transgressions are just as permanent to him as they are to Sonic and Tails, and everyone else for that matter. Knuckles was a kind being, and you knew that now. Losing his way in his endeavor to protect the Master Emerald doesn’t change that.
Your friendship with him had started out of circumstance. After the fiasco with Eggman, the gang needed to find a place to safely keep the weapon. Tom and Maddie’s place was quickly rooted out as a station. Their home was too close to the city to house it properly. There would be too many strangers getting within reach of it every single day. An accident was bound to happen with that lack of security. There was also the issue with Eggman himself, if he were to ever return. The doctor knew of Tom, but didn’t technically know you. Yes, you were indeed present for much of the chaos, but you all had a feeling Eggman didn’t pay much attention to a random stranger whilst piloting a giant robot.
Lucky enough, you had your own home outside of city limits. It was much like a farmhouse, except for the farm. Wide open space, way out in the country, and no neighbors within sight. It was almost too perfect. Feeling generous and knowing there were limited options, you offered up your humble abode for Knuckles and his emerald to stay. He thought about your proposal for a while before ultimately accepting, saying something along the lines of “I accept your offer, comrade. Let us shake on this alliance.”
You didn’t understand why Sonic had zipped up to you two, frantically trying to stop him from grasping your hand. Knuckles’ handshake was fine? Like yeah his hand (paw? foot??) is big, but it's not like it would crush yours or anything.
And with that, Knuckles became your new housemate, and you became the substitute Guardian of the Master Emerald.
At first, it was a bit… awkward. It wasn’t hard to tell that the warrior felt out of place, to at least some degree. He spent most of the time in his own designated area of the basement, quietly keeping to himself and no doubt watching the Emerald. He came out to get food, or use the bathroom, or perhaps borrow a book from the shelf in the living room. He did talk some, but not enough to you would like. Sometimes you would act more extroverted than you really were, going out of your way to ask the echidna some questions about Angel Island and his preferences on certain things. He always gave short, curt answers that went straight to the point. If you didn’t know better, you could think he’d be pissed at you for asking anything at all. If you had to pick a favorite, once you asked him what his favorite fruit was, only to get a bizarrely serious response. As Knuckles padded back into the basement, he stopped briefly, contemplating his answer for a second or two before glancing back at you.
“I enjoy grapes.”
He walked away right after.
Not letting Knuckles’ lack of social skills inhibit your progress, you still pursued. And steadily, you gained progress. First came simple things, like what the echidna liked to eat, or what he would do to pass time while watching the Master Emerald. Then, conversations started to happen, usually about what Sonic, Tom and the gang were up to. Sometimes you spoke about how work had gone for you, though in the beginning you usually held back on talking too much about that, since Knuckles never seemed to be listening. Later on, you were given a pleasant surprise.
One time, as you stood at the kitchen’s stovetop cooking up something for you and Knuckles, who sat quietly on a barstool at the kitchen island. You had started to feel as if you were rambling on about this one incident that happened with your coworkers. With no response from the red mammal, you assumed your story was starting to become a bother. So you stopped about halfway through it, instead deciding to focus on the pan in front of you. He’s a battle-hardened warrior, why would he ever want to listen to some silly story about spilled coffee? Going back to the food, you were content to quiet down, despite that annoying feeling in your chest.
“Why did you stop?”
The question surprised you. It was abrupt, coming from behind. Turning, you look toward the echidna, who now had his eyes on you. The softer, smaller quills on his brow were furrowed in genuine confusion. Fumbling for your words a bit, you reply back just as confused. “S-sorry, I didn’t know you were listening.”
“I was.” Knuckles countered, tone lowered in his earnesty. He titled his head back down to the kitchen counter from once it came, folding his arms across the hard surface comfortably. “Continue. I was enjoying your tale.”
At that, you grin, going back to the stove to finish cooking you and the echidna’s dinner whilst you recount the events from this morning at the office.
Knuckles soon became a key person in your life. He was not one for words, but you soon learned not many were needed with him. Most often then not, he understood the silence was a natural part of company. A thing others could learn from him, including yourself. He even gave advice on the simple things that troubled you. His straightforward way of communicating never failed to speak the obvious when truths were hard to say out loud. Though your friendship with him had just started, you trusted him. And just maybe, he trusted you. He was always there, figuratively AND literally.
Though you planned on changing that last part.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t often where you would descend to the basement into Knuckles’ domain. You never wanted to intrude upon his space, his privacy and security were important to you. Though once in a while, you would have to enter to ask a question or two.
He didn’t have a door, only a long set of stairs leading to the bottom floor. He could definitely hear you coming as you stepped down, down. The stairs weren’t exactly the quietest thing. As you peaked around the corner, you knocked firmly on the wood of the wall, just in case he was preoccupied and hadn’t heard you. You greet him all the same, knowing to announce yourself when he is on guard duty. “Hey Knux?”
There you saw the echidna, laying on an older model of a coach you had given him, head propped up on a cushion while reading a book. The master emerald laid on the other end of said coach. He moved the novel away from his snout so it wasn’t obscuring his vision of you, responding to the nickname you had given him like it was own with a simple “What is it?”
Given the greenlight, you asked your question “Where'd you put all the total paper?”
He seemed confused. It was an emotion that occurred to him often when dealing with things like this. He thought for a split second before asking his own question back. “From… when I helped you in storing the supplies?”
You nodded, assuring him he was right. “Yeah when we put the groceries away a few days ago.”
Knuckles looked deep in thought as he tried recalling the event, eyes in a blank stare seeing nothing at all as he dug up the answer. It would be fitting for a buffering effect to appear above his head at this moment.
He looked over, slowly turning his head as he drawled out his sentence. “I think… I recall… placing the package inside… the garment washing station?” It came out more as a question than anything else, holding little confidence.
You blinked, still perplexed. You spoke to yourself quietly, not directly talking to Knuckles anymore. “The laundry room? Huh.” You paused, scratching the back of your head. “I already checked it. Guess I’ll look again.”
“Have I put it in the wrong location?” Though it was just a few words, you could detect a small amount of apprehension in his voice.
You wave him off casually, wanting to ease any guilty feelings that may be developing. “Nono you’re fine. That’s where I told you to put them. I’ll just have to take another look.”
He stared at your figure for a minute before nodding, picking up his book once more and getting comfortable. “Well, if that is all, then I shall return to reading.”
You chuckled quietly at the formality. Turning to go back up the stairs, you caught a glimpse of the wall of the basement. It was barren, completely. That’s weird. You look more, craning your head to gaze more at your surroundings. As you start to properly take in the atmosphere of the basement, it dawns on you. You’ve never fully realized it before, given you haven’t had the opportunity to until now.
Knuckles’ space was lonely. Extremely lonely looking.
There were the essentials, coach, table, bed, even a box tv, but not a whole bunch else. The space lacked any kind of personality or decoration. Almost like a default Sims room. There was nothing there to define it as Knuckles’ own space, completely empty of anything he could call his own. It bothered you.
“Is there something else that needs asking?”
The echidna looks to you, the same inquiring expression as before. Had he even glanced away in the first place, you didn’t know.
You kept your mouth shut as you mentally ran through your options, not wanting to say anything rude. You scolded yourself. Should’ve known better. Knuckles came from a completely different world. Did you think he brought anything with him? He owns nothing. The only exception being his own damn shoes.
You feel you’re at a loss when suddenly, a lightbulb pops in your head. Oh.
You face Knuckles, finally answering. “Hey…” You start, a little nervy for his reaction. “What do you think about going to the store with me?”
He pauses, and looks at you as if you’ve grown another head. “The store?”
You nod.
Without missing a beat, Knuckles was once again, confused.  He sat his book down on the coach, sitting up upright. “Why?”
You shrug. “Thought you’d just want to go outside a little. You haven’t done that since you got here.” While it wasn’t lying, it wasn’t telling the truth either.
Knuckles shook his head. “No.” He declined. “I cannot. I am forbidden from leaving the emerald unattended.”
Humming, your feet shifted positions, angling you so you were leaning against the wall. “Aw come on.” You say, halfway between a whine and an exclamation of annoyance. But even still, Knuckles held his ground, a stern frown set on his face. “No. I must turn down your offer.”
You sigh, shoulders slumping.
The echidna notices. “I am sorry.” He turns back to the book that had been resting face down on the coach. “Now… if you’ll excuse me, I will return to the fox’s book…”
Your mouth dropped in the shape of an ‘O’, an idea hitting you at the mention of your mutual friend. “Wait.” You exclaim, regaining Knuckles’ attention. “What if Tails can watch it?”
He starts, brain slowing a little at the discovery of this new information. “...If the fox can act as guardian while I am away?” Repeating the sentence out loud to affirm it, looking to you to see if he had heard it right. You nod, practically on the edge of your seat, waiting for him to carry out his sentence.
“Well,” He starts. “The fox can be trusted,” Knuckles looks deep in thought as he ponders this new option. “I suppose if the hedgehog does not interfere with Tails’ focus then, I guess it is possible.”
That’s all you needed to hear. “It would just be for a matter of hours. Shopping doesn’t take a whole day.”
Knuckles rubs his chin. He contemplates the idea of Tails taking over his position a bit more before he ultimately accepts, not having much reason to say no. “If so,” He makes eye contact with you, purple irises peering into your own a little intense for the circumstance. Yet, Knuckles is Knuckles, and he is determined. He speaks with that same formality he often does, “Then I do accept your offer, Y/N of house L/N.”
Oh yeah, forgot about that.
“It’s just Y/N Knux. I’ve told you that.”
Tumblr media
It took about a week to organize you and Knuckles’ little shopping trip. Between your work schedule and Tails’ own experiments, it was somewhat difficult to arrange for him to come over. Yet, you were stubborn, and with some convincing for Knuckles, and reassurances for Tails, you got the fox over for your house. He didn’t need to do much, just keep an eye on the Master Emerald while you all were away. All it took was a quick tour of the house, showing him where the food and utensils were, a quick goodbye and you and the echidna were off.
Knuckles had asked before where you two would be shopping and what you would be shopping for. You did your best to wave him off, telling him what kind of stores you would be going to, but not so much your intention. As vague as it was, he chose not to question any further.
You took Knuckles to a variety of shops, Home Goods, Target, Home Depot. All shared one feature. Decor. Through the limited time you had spent with him, you had learned some things about his world. As confined as your knowledge was, you know it DID NOT look like the plain basement he was currently living in. And though he’d never said otherwise, it wasn’t hard to believe that the echidna could be a little homesick. You would be if you were in his position. You planned on making his home more like a home. Nothing less.
And so, you did. First, you tried looking for larger things. That way you could build a foundation, and work your way up with smaller items. This way, you could also fill up the otherwise empty space. You figured some blankets to make an overhang type thing and the hammock you found in clearance would do nicely.
“These would look really nice in your room, Knux. Whadya think?” You paused, catching yourself, a stutter falling from your lips. “I-I mean if you want to? You don’t have to- of course.”
Knuckles looked up at you. He blinked, eyes widening a slight fraction. You two were the only ones in the aisle.
“So.” He said slowly.  “This was your plan?”
“Uh” You eloquently spoke. “Yea?” Reflexively averting your eyes from the echidna, you sweat dropped, waiting for Knuckles to react. How could you face him when he was gazing at you like that?
Though what you assumed was a look of offense, was actually of wonder, and even something of another nature.
Knuckles inhaled, turning toward the bundled up hammock on the rack, picking it up with a gloved hand. The silence was suspenseful. It usually happened this way: Knuckles doing much of his thinking in his own head while you stressed out internally. It would be funny if you didn’t constantly get the short end of the stick.
“Do you pity me?”
You were caught off-guard, head whipping back to the echidna. What? Why would he say that? “I- uh, no?”
He kept his gaze on the hammock as he spoke, each syllable low as he concentrated on saying them correctly. “Is pity the reason you choose to do things like this?
Mouth agape, you truly were lost. To say you had trouble finding words was an understatement. Did he- feel bad? That was the last thing you wanted him to feel.
You take your time choosing your next words, for they could either make or break this moment. “I- listen Knux, look at me? Please?” And so he did, standing a little slouched in comparison to his regular, straight posture. The lavender purple of his eyes had a guarded melancholy to them you had never seen before. Both changes spur you on to reassure your friend while also shake you where you stand. The range was astounding.
You cleared your throat. “N-No, not out of pity per say…” You trailed off, struggling to find the right words as Knuckles stood patiently, quietly, never once taking his eyes off you. “I just- the other day when I asked you about the toilet paper? Yeah I uh, I realized how unwelcoming and- plain your space looked and I just felt bad because you didn’t have a single thing a-and I wanted you to feel a home- I know it's probably really hard being launched into a whole new world with nothing but some shoes and I just-”
Knuckles reached out and grasped your hand, gripping it gently appit firmly. It pulled you out of your spiraling ramble. “Slow down.” He urged. “You’re not in a race Y/N, house of-”
“Ok, ok” You laugh a little, giggling at the return of the silly title and wrangling with the fact he had grabbed you in the first place.
You take a breath, inhaling deeply before starting again. “I just- want you to feel comfortable. And, I thought this was a way to do it.”
At that, Knuckles’ features relax, and he looks away, thinking. “I- You are a very kind human.” He concludes, dropping your hand to take a set back from you. “But,” He says, a hint of reluctance in his voice. “I cannot accept this.” He moves to put the hammock back, reaching up to set it back on the shelf.
“Wha- hey! Wait, why?” You half shout, catching his hand and stopping his movement. Though he could easily muscle past you, he chooses to stop with you. “Because,” He defends. “I do not need it.”
You huff. “Well I know that, Winter Soldier.” You go to gently pry the hammock out of Knuckles’ hand. Again, he lets you, though not without a face that screams ‘what are you doing’. “But I want you to have it.”
The warrior detests. “I don’t-”
“Knuckles, bud.” You tenderly cut him off, smiling with a benevolence that you hope conveys your honesty. “I want to do this for you.” You lean forward to pronunciate your sentence, catching eyes with the echidna that widens more and more as you continue to speak. “I don’t mind buying this, or anything else for you.” You shake the item in your hand for emphasis. “Will you let me?”
Knuckles freezes momentarily. You swear you see a hint of pink on what you would consider his cheeks as he somewhat suddenly turns his head away, wrestling with himself and with your proclamation.
“I-” He’s stuck, and he has to give himself a mental kick in the rear to get him going again. “I guess… I would like the hanging blanket.”
You let out a sigh, relieved you both are on the same page. “Awesome.”
After getting most of the larger decorations, you then focus your attention on smaller things. What those smaller things would be is now up to Knuckles, who has grown more open to the whole ordeal as the hours passed. A large variety of things were considered, such as candles and fairy lights, even some abstract art pieces that would be fit for a garden. Though the things that were favored above all, and the things that you kept catching the echidna staring at, were the plants. His eyes would linger on the greenery, especially on some of the more exotic ones. Those didn’t take much convincing to let you buy, the warrior only giving a few words in approval: “This one will do…” “...Possibly this one as well.” It wasn’t hard to tell that Knuckles felt weird doing plant shopping of all things, he’s never done anything like it before. And because of that, you did everything with your power to talk to him, to make this as casual and as pleasant as an experience can be. Normalizing domesticity in one of the most powerful fighters in the galaxy may sound difficult on the surface, but as you two approached the end of your short adventure (store worker looking as flabbergasted at your friend as a person could), you found no trouble at all leading Knuckles to check out at the last shop with your abundance of wildlife greenery, and onto this new kind of life you’ll be sharing with the echidna from now on.
It didn’t take long to set all the decor up back at home. With Knuckles’ help, you all made quick work of it. The hammock came first, finding a secure way to hang the thing was a little tricky, but once you broke out the power tools, installing it went by with a breeze. Same case for the fort. You looked up some ideas on pinterest, but you quickly learned that there is actually some strange red mammal in the house who can make a really rad blanket fort by memory. You’ll have to ask him for advice sometime. As for the plants, the one space was filled right up, the emptiness being replaced with a vibrancy that definitely made you feel welcomed. As for Knux, well, he was happy. You knew it. Even as he tried to keep a straight face as he walked around admiring the hanging plants, which branches gracefully cascaded over the rim of their pots.
“While nothing could ever replace my home,” Knuckles said remorsefully as he adjusted a small potted fern, angling it in the most eye-catching way, “This does make the space feel… different.” He trailed off, looking down as he thought of a history and sentiment not unknown to you.
“A good kind of different?” You ask with a hint of a coy tone.
Knuckles looks at you, your playfulness gone completely over his head. Instead, his face is pleasant, approving in some way. “I think so…” He remarks, words sounding confident to your ears. Though his expression changes to something more reluctant as the next thought pops into his head, slipping out his mouth before he can stop it. “You did not have to provide this…”
It takes a good amount of effort to steel yourself from rolling your eyes in the back of your head. You ‘tsk’ in frustration. “Knux, I know. But I chose to. Understand?”
He nods, though hesitant to fully accept the finer feelings, “Yes... It is a lot like the echidna’s honor code in battle.” Seeing your perplexed face at his random reference, he elaborates. “Even though my tribe held proud independent warriors, we helped our comrades at our own discretion. Whether they wanted the aid or not.”
At that, you made a sound of realization. “Ohhh okay, okay. I get it.” You smile down at your friend, who had seemed satisfied in how his room now appeared. It brought you great joy to see the typically stone-faced tank with a softer, more relaxed look. It gave you the confidence to ask one more borderline teasing question, “See, some things aren’t so different, now are they?”
Once again, the intention passes Knuckles by. “No,” he notes, too preoccupied with his own brain to give back any more of an answer. “No they are not.”
You take no notice, grinning in genuine joy for Knuckles. “Good.”
Tumblr media
It's during the most unsuspecting moments in which the most unexpected events take place. Shouldn’t you know that by now?
Tumblr media
What the fuck. I should go to the ER. No that’s a stupid idea. What the fuck are they gonna do, put ice on it? I can do that. What the fuck. Well I’ll probably need something more than ice. Ibuprofen? Maybe. A shot? Yeah. What the fuck. Why? Why did they do that? I don’t understand. To me? Why to me? I’m sorry. What the fuck. I’m tired. I wanna go to bed. What if I wait till the morning? Can I sleep like this? I can try. Probably not. What the fuck. Should I call my friends? No they’re probably busy. I can take care of it. What the fuck. Was it really that special? Was it worth that much trouble? I should’ve been more careful. How old was it? I’m sorry. What the fuck. That bitch. What a fucking piece of shit. I’m sorry. What the fuck.
The calculating rationality that most healthy-minded people would have in these situations was lost to you. Sometimes you thought of it as a gift from god himself: the ability to see things in such simplicity that the problem itself never even posed an ounce of a threat. Never in your life have you had that. Though, never in your life have you ever been healthy-minded, so the math kinda works out in a weird, twisted way.
The hole in your chest remained through it all. Never once subsiding in its outrage. It held every emotion possible as it freely expressed them all, only confined to your heart. Unwavering in every roar, it made such a ruckus. If only it felt just as exposed as you did, then maybe it would shut up. Maybe it would silence itself, just as you were now. Instead, you would have to deal with its burden, as well as the aching that started from your forearm, leading up to the triceps of your shoulder.
It was still daytime. The sun had not yet set, though it was about to. The sky’s vast shades of pinks, purples and blues lit up the darkening landscape of the range, the green and the brown of the earth ever so slowly growing into one cool shade of black. The air was as crisp as ever. It felt mocking in how pure it was, untouched by the will of others beyond its reach. It was the only thing pushing you to walk up your own porch’s stairs, for every bone in your body absolutely refuted the idea of entering your home in the condition that you were in. And only because of one thing. One, small thing.
Your melancholy seemed to express itself through the stomp of your shoes on the old wood. Bump bump bump. It was quiet, not wanting to be heard. Though it was, as there were no sounds to go with it besides the giggling of your keys and the distant sounds of crickets coming to life. Though the adrenalin had since worn off, the nerves had not yet seized. You’ve only got through half the battle. And who to say it had even begun in the first place?
The key was a little difficult to find with one hand. With a shaky arm, you plucked it from the batch, loudly shaking it to rid it of its neighbors. It was slotted in with a good push. You didn't have much trouble turning it. It was with a weighted heart you entered the house, stepping one foot, and then the other past the threshold, the door letting out a loud creak to welcome you home. You didn’t appreciate it. Just as quickly as you were cleared, you gripped the edge roughly, firmly shutting the door back up, locking it, therefore silencing it, for the night.
The house was just as quiet. The thunk of the shut door echoed through the house, disturbing the void. You found yourself unwilling to move forward. The feeling in your heart didn’t want you to. It weighed you down to the floor, outright sticking the soles of your feet to the carpet of the doormat. If it wasn’t for the consistency of your arm’s pain, it was possible you would’ve been standing there all night. It keeps you motivated, reminding you of its presence with every throb.
You toe’d your shoes off where you stood, setting the keys down softly onto the table beside it. Eyeing the kitchen sink that was visible from the door, you padded towards it quietly, evading any spots prone to creek. One by the TV, another by the dividing wall, another by the knife drawer. You subconsciously counted them whilst listening to your quiet feet step one, after the other, after the other.
You nudged the water on with your elbow, the liquid coming out the tab in an easy trickle. Putting your hand under the stream, you felt the water for its temperature. You found it was tolerably lukewarm. That should be fine. Muscling the appendage up from its hanging position below the counter, you bent your arm at the elbow, angling your forearm to get the brunt of the water’s force. You winced when it made contact. It wasn’t pleasant at all. As soothing as it should feel, the area was still sensitive, even to the gentle stream. You watched uneasily as the sink was turned a maroon, the red coloring the once clear liquid. From there, you started to gently rinse off the wound, trying to wash away the blood that had since dried and scabbed over. It was a tedious and aggravating task. The blood was stubborn. You had to really scrub to get it to leave, irritating both you and your skin. You started using some of your fingernails when you became impatient, ignoring the pain that came with it. Anxiety started to bubble within you the longer you stood there, the old clock in the living room doing nothing to ease your nerves as it boldly ticked away. Tick tick tick. You swear this was sabotage. Karma has come to get you. If only this would go faster, then maybe you wouldn’t be out in the open so-
“You’ve returned early.”
Whatever you ate from lunch that day immediately tripled in weight, making your stomach drop at the sound of his voice. You stopped rubbing at your arm, freezing the movement entirely. Your posture went rigid, though you tried masking it with a shift in your stance. You refused to turn around to face him. You couldn’t. Not now, not here. You wouldn't risk it. You didn’t trust your poker face at this moment, which was too caught up in showing you trying to figure out a response that remained calm.
You let out a humorless chuckle. It was so unnatural and disingenuous it made you cringe. Not dissimilar to nails on a chalkboard. “Ha ha yeah, we uh- finished up pretty quickly.” You say this while still facing the sink. Though you were no actor, you felt comfortable resuming your washing, this time slowing down with slower, more deliberate strokes as to appear with a facade of calmness.
“I suppose that is good.” Knuckles shrugs as he says, “Based on what you said before you departed.” He begins to walk closer and off to the right, edging his way to your side, unaware of the person on the edge of a mental breakdown right in front of him. Hearing his footsteps grow nearer, you shift your weight to ensure your back is to the echidna, even as he tries to change that. It almost makes you forget what he had just said, not expecting the remark. “Oh- uh, right.” You say, feigning an agreeing attitude.
You recall the event. You loosely remember telling Knuckles you were heading out. When he asked you why, you didn’t want to lie to him. Poor guy has already had enough of that happen to him. So you told him the truth, adapt a vague version of it. “Just something I promised I’d help someone do. Ha ha… I mean, I don’t really want to, but I’d better.” He watched you leave, silently questioned your weird act as you begrudgingly gathered your things. Yet he knew the importance of promises, he himself taking them very seriously. So he let you go without much fuss, despite the twinge of suspicion in the back of his mind.
He seemed to be satisfied with the closed proximity. About 5 feet away from what you could tell just from your hearing. The sound of the water running still remained in the air, serving as the white noise to this one-sided conversation. You couldn’t even imagine how sore your jaw would be after this from how hard you’ve been clenched it. The emptiness laughed at you as the seconds ticked by. What you wouldn’t give to just seal it away, to just find some semblance of peace, to just be and exist normal in this moment without having to breathe fucking manually just to appear fine.
“How did it go?” Knuckles asked, taking up the mantle as the conversation starter. You would have room to think ‘hey he’s not so bad at it’ if you weren’t a little busy. Yet as it all things go, busy turns into anxiety, anxiety turns into panic, and panic turns into bad. Fucking. Choices.
“Fine.”
Fuck.
Now why did you say that?
You could feel your face flare up with heat. Out of fear or anger, you couldn’t know. The only thing you did know, was the suffocating sound of silence that followed. It was so loud. You stopped your scrubbing a little bit ago.
“What are you doing?”
Fuck.
You hear the question, but not really. It’s odd coming from the warrior, you think. Though you don’t really think as you have to figure out something, and fast.
“U-uh, dishes.”
You spit it out before you really have a chance to think about it. You’re proud for a half-second at your white lie, but the celebration is short-lived when your insides move in sickening ways for the second time while in the conversation.
“I’ve already done them. There are none.”
Fuck.
The silence finds some way to be worse than before. It’s brutal. Never ending its assault on your hammering heart, and never yielding to the vulnerability of your mind. Oh my god could you please just-
“Is there something-“
“…”
“What is on your arm?”
FUCK.
The dread is immense. The impending doom of that singular question is incredible. All senses are blocked from you like a deer in headlights, unable to make out the true meaning of the ask. The hole in your chest becomes invigorated in its bloodlust, your own panic spurring it on to mobilize it while also paralyzing you.
“It’s nothing.”
“I don’t think it is.” You miss the way he says it. It’s calming, concerned. His eyes are careful. A completely opposite force to you. But it all completely passes you by in the current state you are in.
He takes a set forward, just one. You recoil, just enough for the echidna to notice. He doesn’t take another one as he continues to speak clearly, yet deeply and seriously. It doesn’t help ease you much at all.
“Let me see.” It's more of a demand than a request. It makes you shrink back, lip curled down in displeasure. You knew he meant no harm, but it doesn’t stop the back of your mind from taking it in a negative connotation.
“No! It-It's fine!” You grasp your injured arm, still futilely trying to keep it out of sight from Knuckles. Your heart beats away in your chest, boiling like a pot of hot water about to spill over. You’re scared, you realize that now. Of what, you haven’t got to that part yet.
He takes another step, undeterred by your protests, which spur him on further. “No, it is not.” He reaches a hand up, open and waiting to grasp yours.
“I’m fine. Knux, really.” You stress, your voice becomes wobbly as do you. “It’s o-ok, just-“
“No.” The echidna says, the tone he uses sounds final, yet soothingly firm. It makes you stop your panic, just a little. Every word that comes next feels like magic, doing almost supernatural things to your head to make you hear them, to really hear them, for what they are. Each is punctuated with a softness unlike anything your friend had ever used before.
“Y/N, let me see your arm.”
“Please.”
You stop. Taking a deep breath in, you take your time to let it back out. It allows you to see things the way they actually are. There, Knuckles stands. Arm raised, palm open. His stance is mostly relaxed, though if you look closer, a hint of anxiety is there. His eyes were kind, sympathetic, the crease of his eye wrinkled with a stress you’ve never seen from him. In battle it was a harder line, strengthened with anger and determination. Here it was nothing like that. It was fragile, gentle, and even looked painful to wear for long.
Moved by the look, you evaluate yourself as you were. As defensive as you are now, in hindsight, what were you defending against?
Slowly, you ease up. You wordlessly turn to face him, and without much thought, you lower your arm down and away from your body, and towards Knuckles’ awaiting hand. He takes it, tenderly turning it over to look at what he had seen a glimpse of before.
He freezes. His eyes widen, jaw literally dropping at what he’s seeing. Yet, he doesn’t say a thing. He’s just as frozen as you were a minute ago. Like a statue he just stands there, not moving an inch as all thoughts and movement cease. It makes you sweat, not doing much to quell your aching heart.
He doesn’t make eye contact, keeping his eyes trained on the sight of your arm before him. The quills on the back of his head and around his face start to raise, puffing out his features to make them appear larger. It seems as if he has a hard time saying it himself, as he grits out the question. Finally, he speaks. His eyes narrow, brow furrowing downward at his own word.
“Who?”
Though it was only one word, it didn’t fail in striking trepidation through your heart. You’re silent as the question hangs in the air, awaiting an answer that you never planned on giving.
But Knuckles still wants it, so he asks again.
“It was them… Wasn’t it?”
His voice lowers as he utters the phrase, even as he tries to keep an even tone. His anger builds as the seconds of silence tick by, seconds that do not deny the question. His mouth contorts at the ongrowing outrage, curling down into a snarl. Even he, who knows the repercussions of not keeping your anger under control, cannot stop the blooming, burning feeling so deep in his gut that it makes everything he’s ever said about remaining calm sound like a lie.
And without a response from you, there's nothing to stop the echidna’s rage.
Suddenly, and without warning, Knuckles drops your arm, which you pull back to you to hold. Then, he just… walks away, wasting no time at all as he makes determined strides to the front door. He’s mumbling words as he goes. If you listen closely, you could hear the more punctuated ones, such as ‘coward’, or ‘unworthy’.
“H-hey!” You stutter out, tripping over your own feet as you try going after Knuckles. “What are you doing?”
“Going to go deal with the problem.” He grumbles, making the situation sound oh-so simple. He’s halfway to the exit at this point.
“Hey wait!” You try again, “Where are you going?? I didn’t tell you where I went.” You take more steps to the door, not covering near enough ground to catch up with him.
“I’ll find them.” Knuckles flat out growls, getting increasingly agitated by the second. His fists tighten into intimating weapons of pure strength, just itching to get one good hit in.
An image plays over and over in his head. You, face pale at his discovery of your bleeding arm, the very real fear that showed in your body language. It angered him. Greatly.
He’s about to reach for the door handle before your feet catch up with your thoughts, legs propelling you forward. Your head spins at the possibility of Knuckles facing those responsible. That is the literal opposite of what you wanted. The thought of it alone is what gets you going faster.
“Don’t!” You shout, grabbing his shoulder to stop him from going any further. “Please don’t.”
“And why not?!” He yells right back, whipping himself around to fully face you. He sheered as he spoke, a grumble to his voice that made him appear more frightening than what he truly was. He used a booming voice that conveyed all of his frustrations pretty clearly. “They need to pay.”
“I-I know- just,” You take a minute to rub your hand down your face, already at your stress limit.
Knuckles interrupts, unable to contain himself at what seems to him is your level of complacency. “It is inexcusable!!” He roars, refusing to back down. “I will not stand for it.” He tried once more to leave, turning away from you. You stop him again, overcome with your own anxiety. You feel the incessant need to fiddle with your hands as you put your foot down.
“I KNOW!” Your scream catches both you and Knuckles off-guard. The house becomes eerily quiet with the lack of noise, the sounds of the pipes and utilities on the edges of their seats as they watch on. You were never one to get aggressive to those you cared for, but desperate times call for desperate measures. And yes, you were, in fact, desperate. Your abdomen cramps, making it harder and harder to sooth the situation like you normally could if you weren’t so caught up in your own head. Your breaths are heavy, holding the weight of everything you have done and said up until this point. You’re sure your lungs are willfully unprepared to take up the burden of what you plan on saying next.
You soon discover you’re right.
“I know-w” you pant, shoulders crumpling in on the rest of your body. “Just pl-please, please dontgo, I donwanna-” It suddenly gets harder to speak, your throat constricting around itself, preventing the words from escaping you. Even it doesn’t want you to sound weak. “I-I’m sorry…”
At this point, you’re at the end of your rope. You were frightened. Of what Knuckles could do, what they could do, what you would do… it all ran through your mind at a million miles an hour. You haven't even begun to rationalize with yourself the event that got you in this mess in the first place, and it was starting to catch up to you. You simply did not have the mental capacity to process all that it happened. And it showed on your face, lines of worry etched into what used to be smooth features. And suddenly you seem much, much older, The sheer pressure adding decades of age, your bones turning frail, matching the vulnerability of your headspace. Your eyes lowered to the ground, head drooping, ashamed of what you feel and afraid of what you've become because of it.
And Knuckles finally sees it all.
The echidna’s own worry lines grow at the realization, his own chest tightening at the sight of you. It’s a strange thing to him, a feeling he had trouble recognizing at first, seemingly forgotten from his younger days with his father. It confused him, and he didn’t exactly have anything to compare it to. How was the battle-hardened echidna supposed to know what it was? Yet with the help of his new family providing guidance and remaining patient, he was eventually able to figure it out, though only roughly. What he did discover, however, is that it often came with his anger.
He was worried. So, so worried.
And that scared him.
He didn’t like feeling worried, not one bit. He detested the idea of him being worried the moment he comprehended he was. Knuckles the Echidna, worried? How ridiculous. It was a weak emotion, he thought at first. It would slow him down, make him vulnerable, and even, worst comes to worst, allow for him to get taken advantage of again. That’s what he told himself, at least.
When he saw your arm, he felt his worry come at full force. It struck through his heart, piercing it with a sharp, clean cut. What he left out of his explanation for his dislike of worry, was the deeper meaning that had apparently escaped all he knew, even his closest friends.
It was the fact that his worry reminded him of everything he had failed to do. Every promise he broke, every vow he made to nobody but himself yet did not hold true. And even then, as he realized the how and the who to the backstory of your injuries, he failed again, once more not delivering on a promise he made to himself: to protect his protector. And oh, did it anger him. It angered him so much. To fail at such an extent, it was downright shameful.
It was easy for the madness to take hold, he often let it. And he did. He let his anger control him when he found your blood exposed to the elements, your skin inflicted with a bruise the size of a baseball. It coursed through his veins at an insane rate, setting his mind into overdrive, acting as a catalyst to every negative image that crossed his mind. A spark ignited within him, the flame erupting within his chest, the flame of revenge. “How dare they? How could they? You?! Of all people to attack? How weak, how pathetic. How dishonorable.”
And in that instance, he remembered his promise, and sought it out to hold it true, by whatever means necessary. It would be easy for him. Light work even, and he would definitely get immense satisfaction in absolutely pummeling your enemies. You wouldn’t even have to lift a finger.
Though easy does not mean right. And as much as he would find gratification in solving this problem for you, your health took precedence over everything. Even this. He knew that, it just took him a minute to fully remember. Your eyes sure helped, pleading, watery, bloodshot from stress, it all came together in a heartbroken concoction, like a liquid potion ready to persuade its victim of anything. And he had fallen for it, though willingly. It wasn’t hard, you were you after all.
He takes a deep breath to settle that smoldering fire within him. “Okay.” He speaks within a new tenderness that does wonders to calm your racing heart. “I won’t go anywhere, nor do anything.”
He grasps your arm carefully, beginning to lead you to the couch nearby. “Come,” he says “let's sit you down. Your wound needs treatment.”
You nod absentmindedly, not exactly understanding, but doing so nonetheless. You follow him one step at a time as you take your seat, Knuckles leading you down all the while. His touch isn’t something many would expect from the tough echidna. It was gentle, delicate, like a soothing balm to cover the sores on your soul. “Stay.” He spoke in a whisper, “I will return with the box of aid.”
“First aid?” You joke weakly, voice cracking with the effort.
Knuckles is either unaware of the gag, or chooses not to react. “Yes, that.”
Without another word, he quickly dashes away, returning just as fast with the kit in hand.
It took some mumbled guidance from you for the echidna to understand what to do. Though that was understandable, since the guy has never had to use the first aid kit before.
He was uncharacteristically careful in how he treated your wound. Every time the pads of his fingers brushed against your skin, it was gentle, almost feather-like. Especially around the mangled tissue of your injury. Here, Knuckles’ touch was that of a ghost. There, but not really. Its presence was felt, surely, though not nearly enough for your senses to pick it up as something harmful. You could confidently say the warrior had not caused you any excess pain. Which was already monumentally better than you.
It was quiet as he worked. It was somewhere between a comfortable and uncomfortable silence. It was hard to tell which. So many things remained questioned, so many things remain unsaid. What could you say? What good will an explanation do? Well, some obviously. You of course knew that. It was still hard though, to say the truth. Even if you’ve known it for years.
As rough as you were, the wound was clean of any dried blood or debris. Knuckles knew as well, and went straight to wrapping it up. Placing a sterile absorbent pad on the bruise he secured it with some medical tape, which he probably used an excessive amount of. But you chose not to say anything. He also examined your bruise on your forearm, though decided there wasn’t much to be done about that. However, it didn’t stop him from putting a bandaid on the area. Again, you let it slide.
Knuckles quickly gathered up the supplies he had gotten from the kit, putting them back in the box haphazardly. I’ll fix it later, you thought to yourself.
The warrior chose to sit by your side about a foot apart from you. Not too close, not too far. He held his tongue for a minute, eyes kept trained on the floor beneath the both of you. Perhaps waiting for you to speak first, perhaps muddling over the same thing you were. It was not easy for anyone to read the echidna’s mind, not unless Knuckles himself said his thoughts aloud.
Which he often did.
“How come you didn’t tell me of this?” He spoke the question in a whisper, matching the delicate atmosphere with the tone of his voice. He looked to face you, eyes missing their usual luster of purple. You hated to be the cause of such a loss.
You had to think for a second. You yourself didn’t know the answer to such an ask, even though you would be the one person who would. You fidgeted with your fingers, picking at the skin of them as your mind twisted and turned. It took several more moments before you could come up with a conceivable answer, one at least an outsider could begin to understand.
“I… I didn’t know what to do.” You started. Knuckles sat to your right, as patient as ever, gloved hands propped up on the coach, which straightened his posture to attention.
You continue as best you could, “I guess- I mean, I think I wanted to handle it?” It comes out in the question, not sure of yourself in the slightest.
“Why?” Knuckles butts in, quick to question the decision. His brows furrowed in confusion, genuinely not understanding.
“Why?” You say back, parrot-like. “Uh-h…” You had to think to yourself again. It’s astonishing how so much over thinking can go right down the drain when you need your excessive ideas the most. “Because uhh, I mean it’s my thing isn’t it?”
The echidna’s face doesn’t change, still frozen in trying to figure out what you mean, and it shows on his face. So you try again. “It’s… my responsibility.”
A deep frown spreads across Knuckles’ face, painting his features in a disapproving way. “Your responsibility?” He repeats. You nod meekly, taking hold of your injured arm to cradle it, still not knowing what to do with your hands.
Closing his eyes, Knuckles huffs out a breath. He stands, pushing himself off the coach in a smooth motion. Your heart jumps at the thought of him walking away and leaving you there alone, but the muscle soon calms to see him turn to face you, coming to stand before you. There you two are level. It's truly one of the only scenarios in which the both of you can see eye to eye, when the warrior can peer right into your eyes without having to look up or down. Just maybe, he chose this on purpose.
Knuckles reach down to your lap, oh so gingerly taking your arm into his hands to hold, looking at the bandaged injury whilst he says his piece, the smoothness of his voice just barely echoing through the home. “My father was a kind soul” he breathes out, “yet he had a habit of keeping the burdens that weighed on him all to himself.”
Your eyes grew wide at the mention of Knuckles’ kin. He’s talked about them before, though this is definitely the most personal it's ever gotten.
“You remind me of him in this way” He looks up to you, eyes with a hazy focus, thumb brushing against the cotton of your bandage softly. “A protector that refuses to be protected.”
The silence is deafening as the two of you contemplate what has just been said. You more so. You’re shocked to say the least. The sentiment of Knuckles comparing you to his own father, someone he loves and respects extensively is… overwhelming. The weight of it seems to help ease your nervousness.
“What role do you think I play in this tribe?” Knuckles asks, titling his head down to try to make eye contact with you. It kind of works, coaxing your own up to face him as well.
“Uh” You stumble, “A guardian?”
Knuckles does the echidna equivalent of a ‘uh huh’. “Yes. I am a guardian.” He continues, “What of the hedgehog and his fox friend?”
You look up to the ceiling, it now appears much more appealing as you think of a response. “Well they’re kind of protectors too.”
Knuckles nods, asking one more time “And Maddie and Tom?”
You’re on a roll, now feeling more comfortable looking Knuckles in the eyes. “Them too.”
“Right.” He says, satisfied. “In our tribe, we all have the role of guardian. And so, we all protect. Especially each other.”
Now you see where this is going. “Knux, I’m not sure if I-”
He interrupts. “Whatever you are about to say- it is wrong.”
“Knux I-”
“No. Wrong.”
“But I-”
“No.”
You give up, giving in to the echidna’s game. You swear you can see a twinge of a smile start to creep onto his face.
“But if I may,” He adds, voice suddenly becoming dimmer as he breaks eye contact to look back at your arm. “I do think there is one difference among us.”
“In what?”
Knuckles takes a breath, seemingly randomly getting anxious. You can’t fathom why. “As a guardian, I am meant to treat all I protect equally.” You nod, agreeing but not getting the point. “Though I do not.”
He slid his hands down to grip your own, head lifting to let his eyes peer into yours unwaveringly. They look to be dripping with his usual determination, along with something else you couldn’t place. Something kinder, something sweeter. “Though each of us were guardians,” he pauses, thinking for a moment “you have had a different duty ever since the EggMan’s defeat.”
You blink, trying to follow as best you can. Knuckles continues, “Your duty is dangerous. Fragile as humans are, I was surprised when you took up the task. It requires constant vigilance, not many could keep it up for long.”
His hands tighten around yours, squeezing momentarily before easing up. Perhaps a reminder for himself. The urge to squeeze back comes and goes. “I have since then grown a respect for you unmatched by any other. Both because of that, and because of your character.”
His pause invokes a special importance, pulling you in. It was captivating, doing its job in changing the atmosphere only slightly. “You are precious to me, as I have grown to know you. More so than the other members of our tribe.”
Your eyes widen, not expecting such a declaration. You have to keep your mouth from opening in shock.
Unperturbed, the warrior continues. The fiercest of his eyes growing with every passing moment. His grip becomes impossibly more gentle, every callous he ever had suddenly disappearing. “Though my focus does lie with the master emerald, it is you that keeps my attention and company Y/N, not any gem or jewel.”
“I don’t know why you would think that.” You blurred out, too caught off guard to think to hold back.
Knuckles takes it in stride, once again taking a breath, wanting to speak as clearly as possible. The effort from keeping his cool shows on his face, a little scrunched with the strain. He leans in to emphasize his next words, yearning to have you understand him. “I do.”
The staticky fog in your mind doesn’t seem so intense anymore.
“You have commendable bravery, and a personality unlike any other. Attributes I now hold dear.” Knuckles returns your hands to your lap, taking the opportunity to straighten the fabric of your shirt, which has since been crooked. The neckline is quickly fixed back into its usual spot with a quick tug upward, letting it fall back into position naturally. He now spoke with a more annoyed tone than before. It would’ve alarmed you about 5 minutes ago, though now you’ve calmed, and know the warrior doesn’t point such frustrations to you, but to the third party in question. “Which is why it pains me to see you overwhelmed in this way. Especially by those who are meant to be closest.”
You worry your palms, growing tired at the lack of things you can actually answer. “I’m sorry” You whisper, “I should’ve told you.”
“It’s alright” Knuckles whispers back, in a way that differs from your own. A way that makes your thoughts coherent. That actually helps you understand that he's telling the truth. “I don’t know much of troubles such as this… but I do know they can be complex to you.”
He rolls his shoulders, instinctively resetting his posture. “But to me?” He shrugs, “Not so much.”
That earns a watery chuckle from you.
The air feels tired, almost rung out of all energy it had. It’s breathable now, and it lets you digest everything, lets the both of you take a moment to grasp with the gravity of the situation. Lets Knuckles figure out what to say next.
“I want you to make a promise.” He speaks, crossing his arms in front of his chest with a huff.
“What kind?”
“My kind.” He responds.
You sit up straight, a little confused. Knuckles takes it as a signal to proceed.
“I want you to promise to ask for my aid if something like this were to happen again.”
You furrow your brow. “Knux, I don’t think I can-”
“Let me restate that.” He rehashes, cutting you off. “I want you to promise to try to ask for my help.”
You bite your lip, looking off to the side in contemplation. Could you? Realistically. It surely was a difficult question to answer, especially with every little negative thought poking into your brain to tell you no. If this question had been asked before, you probably would have said yes just in passing. It would be easy to say yes, just to get the question over with. But now, as you hold the spotlight, you can't lie. Not to him, not right now. It's neither the time nor place. And you don’t think it ever will be.
But as you look at Knuckles now and into his stupidly sweet lavender gaze of his, your true answer starts to become more and more real. Him and that worried look of his does wonders in helping to encourage you to make that leap, to take that chance that you never knew you would be taking. It's so strange, you think, he could do anything, as mountainous as destroying death robots, or as simple as baking a cake with you on a Sunday morning, and it would all still come together into the nice little package of ‘good’ he had to offer. Nothing changed with him, even now, as that same sense of good comes in clutch to hull you away from your enemies and take on the burden instead of you. An honor like that is impossible to find, and irreplaceable once tossed away. You better remember that Y/N.
And that's when your answer becomes clear. Something so profound and special, so kind and gentle, will never be forgotten or taken for granted if you have any say in it. And it will never shake, nor ever waiver. You have a promise to uphold, and you intend to keep it. As a protector, as the protected, and as a roommate.

Under the Moonlight - Final Part- Source of Light
Read Part 3 if you haven't already - Arguing with Myself (Sort Of)
Quick note: This story takes place before the sequel. Any Sonic Movie story I write like this one will be a pre-sequel story.
TW: Slight gore, though there is no blood, it's mainly violence towards Nightmare creatures.
Sonic was all by himself in the dark woods, and encounters a dangerous enemy. Believing he'll settle in to his new lifestyle, some unexpected visitors came to save the night.
-
He couldn't stop thinking about it. For hours he couldn't stop thinking about it.
He couldn't stop thinking about them.
They saw everything, and they were terrified.
Why did he lose control of himself? Why did he do that? He would never do that.
But he did all of it anyway, because he's the Werehog.
Puppy like whimpers escaped from his mouth when he continued to sob by a tree. He looked up to see that the moon was almost gone, but the stars were high and bright.
He lost track of time but he knew that it would be morning soon.
At this point, it might be impossible to look for Light Gaia's Bracelet in time to get rid of this stupid Werehog form.
And even if he succeed, Tom and Maddie, and the majority of his hometown, would be scared of him for a long time.
It's hopeless, even if there is hope for Sonic.
"Dumb Dark Gaia energy..." He grumbled sadly, putting his head down again.
You keep forgetting that I can hear you.
"Oh, shut up." He barked hoarsely. "Why won't you go posses someone else and leave me alone...?"
You are quite the simpleton for being so powerful. Like I said, you cannot rid of-
"I KNOW!" He rose his head up again, yelling at nothing in particular. "I know I can't get rid of you!" He panted, feeling restless and tired from screaming and crying.
He plopped back on the ground, face into the grass. "Just stop talking to me..." His voice mumbled.
Sonic. It is almost the rise of dawn. You need to complete our mission.
"I can stay as the Werehog, but I don't want to hurt anyone anymore..." He sniffled.
I'll make you if I have to.
"...And I'll fight back." His eyes glow for a moment.
Dark Gaia sighed.
For how long? How long would you be able to fight back when you know fully well you that put your town in fear?
"It's your fault that I caused havoc back there..." He argued.
Is it, really, when it was you who partially became a Nightmare, and nearly cost one's life in front of hundreds? Including your family?
Sonic froze.
"Th-They're... How did you-?"
Like I said, I know everything about you. Once my energy is one with a being, I have all their memories. Knowing their weaknesses, I will use them to my advantage to create an bigger army.
Sonic sit up in horror. "W-Wait... Are you saying...?"
You knew those humans of yours are looking for you, don't you?
He looked out to the dark opening of the woods. He gulped, and his lips quivered. As much as he knew that Tom and Maddie were afraid of him, he just wished they were here right now.
But at the same time, putting the pieces together he wanted them to stay away from him at all times, knowing that Dark Gaia will make him hurt them, or anyone near him.
"I won't let you make me hurt my parents just to get you a bigger, stupid army, you JERK!" He roared at the sky.
Careful. Your anger. It take you over as well. Sunrise is soon, and your energy will become unable to resist.
They're right. ...Again.
He must remain calm. He doesn't want to destroy anything or hurt anyone again. He already scared Green Hills badly, he does not want to make it worse for him or the town.
It's for the best to stay away from the town for good. If Dark Gaia doesn't make him, of course.
"I can't go back... I can't put Green Hills in danger all because I turned into a monster..." He said to himself. "They'll be safe when I'm far away..." He was choking up again. "And I'll be safe if I stay here... Where the Nightmares belong..."
About that...
Before Dark Gaia can say anything else, a low growl could be heard from within the forest. Sonic jumped and got back on his feet, looking around for the source of the sound. "What was that?! A lion?! Wait a minute, there aren't no lions in Green Hills..."
You are half Nightmare, may I remind you. Not all of my minions will cooperate with you since the transformation isn't complete yet. But I will do all I can to make sure they behave themselves so that way they won't harm you, only the humans.
"What are you, their dad?"
Do not mock me.
"Whatever."
However, if you ever dare to ignore my orders again at this point... Well... You'll see.
"Compared to how I look, I bet they won't look so..."
Catching something from the corner of his eye, Sonic turned to his right to see something come out of the shadows...
A dark blue and violet-ish creature, with a glowing aura which appeared to be purple fire of sorts coming out of it's spikes on it's back. Their eyes glow a frightening bright pink, staring into Sonic's soul.
Their arms and hands were huge and they had sharp blue claws, same for their feet. The claws on each were glowing light blue like the fire and eyes. There was a long horn coming out from between it's eyes, and it had a long tail that looked like a glowing sickle.
There were glowing markings on the back of it's hands, in an eerie magenta color. Sonic watched as the creature goes on all fours for a brief moment, snarling at him.
"A Nightmare." Sonic spoke finally, backing away slowly from the beast.
The Nightmare was unsure if the Werehog is it's ally, since it's half Nightmare like them, but half human. Though the Nightmare was confused on why it isn't human, but whatever isn't infested with Dark Gaia energy is the enemy nonetheless.
"Look, pal," The Werehog stuttered, faking a smile. "I don't wanna start anything, alright? Just because I don't wanna be like you that doesn't mean you wanna pick a fight, right? I mean we're both Nightmares, yet we both have our differences! That makes sense, right??"
All the Nightmare could do was growl quietly at the startled teen.
His ears pinned down to his head. That didn't work.
My Nightmare wouldn't trust you so easily considering your appearance, but until you find a human or more, and transfer your energy to them, you will gain the Nightmare's trust.
"Good luck with that." Sonic says, backing up more. "Ever since I defeated Robotnik, my duty is to protect the people I care about! To be a hero! And because of you, the whole town thinks I'm a monster!"
The Nightmare slowly began to approach the Werehog, snarling at him and preparing to attack.
"As long as I stay here in the woods, I won't bother anyone again. And I don't care if you can control me, I will find a way to snap out of it like before and keep my family and town safe! Like a real hero I am!!"
The Nightmare then lets out a loud, glass shattering screech of a roar and pounced on the Werehog, ready to bite his head off. Sonic let out a yell trying to push this creature off of him.
It's mouth was filled with fangs just begging to rip something apart. It continued screaming at the Werehog, trying to attack, but Sonic kept fighting back, trying his best to remain calm and not go feral like last time.
"Get! Off! Of! Me!" He strained, pushing as hard as he can.
He groaned loudly, using all his strength to push this beast off. With a cry, he lands a big punch on the Nightmare's stomach, sending it flying a few feet away from Sonic.
The Nightmare collapsed on the ground and Sonic quickly got back up on his feet. His eyes were huge and his mouth was agape. "Holy crap..." He stared at his humongous hands and a big smile slowly crept back on his muzzle for the first time since forever.
He began to laugh out loud with pride and excitement, running in circles on all fours. "OH, MY GOD, ARE YOU SERIOUS?! THAT WAS SO FREAKING COOL!"
He then came to a halt, and looked down at his hands again, unaware that his tail is wagging fast like a hyperactive dog. "I didn't know I was that strong! HAHA! In your face, Nightmare!"
The lizard like creature got back up and turned to the Werehog, incredibly furious now.
"Uh oh." His joy quickly vanished the moment the Nightmare glared right at him. "Probably too early to celebrate."
You made quite a mistake. You should run.
"I'd rather stay here. So that way, no one can get hurt but the real enemy." Sonic got back on his hands and feet, preparing to attack the Nightmare.
He took a deep, long breath, calming himself down, before opening his eyes, which are no longer glowing, and back to it's usual emerald green windows of the soul of a hero he used to be.
A hero he still is.
He smirked his traditional smirk. "Come and get me." He called out in a cocky tone.
The Nightmare charged at the now confident beast with another loud shriek before suddenly they were kicked in the face by someone's foot, making it tumble to the ground just inches away from Sonic.
"What the-?!" Before he could react, in front of was the person, who attacked the Nightmare, landing back on his feet.
Sonic gasped and got back on his feet, taking a step back.
"TOM?!"
The Donut Lord himself turned to face his fluffy friend, with a tired but big smile. "Hey, bud." He said, panting.
"Thomas!" Another voice cried out from the distance. It was Maddie, the Pretzel Lady.
"We're right behind ya!" Crazy Carl was there too, also catching up with the sheriff.
"Maddie?! Carl?!" Sonic was relieved, yet shocked to see the three humans in the same forest as him out of all things. "What are you guys doing here?!"
"Saving your butt, that's what!" Tom try to stand up straight, taking some deep breaths, while being comforted by Maddie.
"But... B-But..." Ears bent back and tail flopping down to the ground, the Werehog stepped away further, feeling unprepared and scared now.
Perfect timing.
"No! You shut up right now, dude! I am NOT in the mood to deal with you!" He yelled at a tree, which was kind of random to everyone involved except Crazy Carl.
"Sonic?" Maddie said, one eye brow raised.
"Uhhh, haha... That was nothing." He chuckled.
They're here. Now... Do it.
"NO! I WON'T! Get out of my head!" Sonic cried out once again to nothing at all, which is worrying Tom and Maddie.
"Sonic, who are you talking too?!" Tom said, trying to reach out to the Werehog.
"it's Dark Gaia." Carl said. "It's communicating with him since he's half Nightmare. He's trying to fight back it's control."
The couple looked at each other and nodded, knowing what to do next. "Carl, you distract that... Thing, me and Maddie will go comfort our kid!"
"You got it!" Carl gives a thumbs up and ran towards the Nightmare. "Just don't get hurt, alright?" Tom said.
"I'll be fine! I got what I need to fend mahself!" He said, pulling out a flashlight. The Nightmare was about to attack Carl, but he began to shut the flashlight on and off rapidly at the creature, blinding him constantly with light.
It shrieked loudly, covering it's eyes. "Go on! Get! Get!!" He yelled at the creature, not stopping the blinking light anytime soon.
"Guess that'll do." Maddie said, with Tom nodding in agreement. They both run off to see Sonic, shaking his head violently.
"Go away! GO! AWAY!" He cried.
Last warning, Sonic. Do as I say, or I'll make you.
"I'M NOT HURTING MY PARENTS!! JUST GO AWAY!!"
He then punch a hole through the tree. He yelped, not meaning to do that.
"Sonic! Buddy, you need to calm down! Dark Gaia's in your head!" Tom said, cautiously approaching him. "You think I don't know that?!" Sonic barked at the sheriff, nearly scaring him.
He gasped, realizing what he had done. "N-No! You shouldn't be here! Leave before I-!"
"We are not leaving you, young hedgehog!" Maddie said, placing her hand on his hairy arm.
His eyes grew in fear.
"DON'T TOUCH ME!"
POW!
He lightly punched Maddie to the ground. She winced, feeling scrapes on her arm. She sat up, holding onto her arm. Tom ran up to her and placed his hands on her cheeks. "Maddie! Are you okay?"
The Werehog couldn't be any more frightened. He hurt her like he did before back at the house. "Nononononono! NO! GET OUT OF HERE!"
"Sonic-!"
"Please! I don't want to hurt you!" He screamed, feeling tears stinging his eyes.
"Uhhh, guys? The flashlight's not working!" Carl said, waving his "weapon" quickly before seeing the Nightmare snarl at him. He stuffed his weapon back in his pocket and ran to the group. "We need to run someplace else before-!"
"THERE'S MORE OF THEM?!" Maddie shrieked.
"Too late."
A couple more Nightmares slowly crept through and out of the shadows. They were nearly surrounding the four. Carl put up his fists, ready to beat up some monsters, Tom and Maddie held each other's hands and Sonic was out of breath.
I am out of patience.
Oh no, here comes the stupid headache.
The hedgehog cried out, holding his head, fighting back the control. "GO...! AWAY...! I DON'T WANT TO...! H-HURT MY..." He groaned loudly, tears streaming down his light blue muzzle.
The couple looked behind them to see their kid crying in fear. "Sonic!' They both shouted.
The sun will rise soon and you will be my puppet! You will obey!!
When Sonic opened his glowing eyes, he looked up to see the horrified Tom and Maddie.
The sight weakened him at first but...
Looking at them for long enough...
They weren't running away. They were blocking the Nightmares' way of trying to reach to him, even Carl. He wasn't running away either. Well, it's Crazy Carl, of course he's not running away.
But Tom and Maddie...
These people who gave him their home and look out for him for months...
Now seeing him as some slightly bigger monster, who ruined a bank and beat up a bully, didn't run off.
They weren't scared of him. They were scared of losing him.
After all this time, he thought he frightened them because of his appearance. They were really just worried for his well being?
But he's a Werehog.
...But to them, he's still their hedgehog.
The ringing faded. The pain faded. The control faded.
Sonic got back up, completely ignoring Dark Gaia's control. He exhaled a shaky, but determined breath as he opens his eyes, no longer glowing slime green, but this time, the electric bright blue.
Lightning began to bounce off his quills, back to their normal blue color. Tom, Maddie and Carl back away a few steps, knowing exactly what's about to happen.
The Nightmares took notice and kept their glowing eyes on their new target; the traitor.
Once more, he smirked.
What the hell is this?! You are under my control!! How is this possible?!
"Plain and simple, really... I'm in control now."
Then, with a burst of speed, the Werehog punched a hole through one of the Nightmares, and it screeched out to the heavens. Tom and Maddie gasped loudly, seeing the scene unfold.
"Oh, I love where this is goin'." Carl said, smiling finally.
He pulled his fist out of the lizard beast's chest, and landed another punch but to it's face, knocking it out completely. It fell to the ground motionless, and faded away like dust.
"Who's next?!" Sonic announced loudly to the crowd the Nightmares with an iconic smile on his face.
They all hiss at him before charging at him. One of them tried to scratch him but he dodged quick enough for the Nightmare to attack the ground instead. He grabbed it's horn and shoved it's head in the ground.
Then he landed a dozen punches at another one before landing a heavy kick to the face, defeating it completely. Sonic continued going all out on the monsters one by one, some both at once.
Tom, Maddie and Carl watched as each and every Nightmare fall to the grass and evaporate to the winds. "Go, Sonic! Come on! Get their asses!" The sheriff cheered. Maddie lightly shoved his elbow. How dare he swore in front of their hedgehog-werewolf child.
It felt like hours, but the Werehog wouldn't stop until every last Nightmare in the woods was completely down and out.
Then, one last Nightmare of the group tried to ambush him, creeping slowly and growling quietly. Maddie took notice of the monster and gasped.
"SONIC!" She cried.
He put his head up, feeling someone, or something, behind him.
Before the Nightmare even got a chance to pounce of him from a distance, the Werehog took a quick turn and STRETCHED his arm right at the creature at scary speed, impaling it.
Sonic just stared at his now stretched out arm, that was probably as long as a canoe. He blinked a couple of times. "...This form never fails to surprise me in so many ways." He said, flabbergasted.
The Nightmare goes limp and Sonic pulled his arm out and it goes back to it's original length. He was still wondering how he could do that. Probably a Nightmare thing.
As he looked back at the monster he knocked out, it faded away.
Finally, all the Nightmares are gone.
Sonic stood there for a moment for a few seconds, calming himself, before he turned to his left to see Tom, Maddie and Crazy Carl. They all looked so relieved to see him okay and proud that he took care of the Nightmares.
At first, he was relieved and happy with himself, glad he protected his friends and took out the enemies. But...
He frowned and looked away for a second, feeling guilty about the situation he caused earlier. He sat down, both of his hands placed down on the ground. His ears drooped and so did his fluffy tail.
He looked back up at the humans to see their concerned faces. "You can go now..." He sadly spoke.
"No way." Tom said, walking up to him. "We're not leaving you out here."
Sonic was startled to see Tom approach him so quickly. "Y-You should! I-I was causing trouble in town, I couldn't control myself at first! ...I even hurt Karen... She was a jerk but she didn't deserve..." His lips began to tremble.
"Honey..." Maddie goes up to the Werehog along with Carl.
"I looked like a monster back there... I am a monster..." Once again, tears were working back up. "You were so... terrified. Y-You were scared of me!"
Tom and Maddie couldn't feel more heartbroken.
"Y-You don't have to be here... Please, just go... I don't want to hurt you..." He choked, turning away and walking off, until Tom held onto his giant hand.
"Buddy..." Tom began, showing such a genuine, yet sad, smile. "Back at the house, we were afraid at first that you would lose yourself completely, but of course, you were still your ol' self, chasing down a cat instead of trying to attack us."
The Werehog was still facing down at his socks.
"Shocked about what happened, but still worried for your safety, me and Maddie went out to find you. To make sure you're okay." He continued. "I'm kind of glad you didn't see how Maddie reacted during the whole search. The poor thing couldn't help but talk about how worried she was about you."
"But not as worried as Tom." Maddie came in, kneeling down to face Sonic at his level. "We were both scared for you, despite those... drastic changes you had. We were hoping you didn't run out of town on your own again..."
"But..." He croaked. "I hurt someone..."
"You didn't mean to." Tom said. "You never meant that. It was Dark Gaia messing with you. Carl saw everything too and he told us everything."
"It's true." Carl added.
"We were lucky to find you out here. It was the first place Carl believed you'd run into. I was afraid you might come across any danger, though." The Donut Lord said, patting his shoulder, comforting the Werehog.
Sonic slowly raises his head to see Maddie and Tom, showing a smile on their face.
A relieved smile.
A loving smile.
He smiled back. Just a small smile, though.
"You're not mad at me? Or scared of me?" He stuttered out the question.
"Hey," Tom spoke. "Werewolf hedgehog hybrid or not, you're still our Sonic Wachowski. You've always have been since the day you saw your room for the first time. Since then, you've always been part of our family."
"And we'll do all we can to make sure nothing bad will happen to you, and we guarantee we'll get that Light Gaia's Bracelet in time before sunrise." Maddie added.
"...Really?" Sonic said, a brief glimmer of hope shinned from his emerald eyes.
"Absolutely."
There was a small pause, a pause of the small family looking at each other. Despite all the chaos that happened, their still together. They will always be together.
The pause was interrupted by a hoarse, but gleeful chuckle from Sonic himself. "You guys love me too much."
"Well, it's better than that than none at all, right?" The sheriff said. "Like I said, your feelings matter, and they always will, silly."
Looking back on that Halloween night, during the end of their trick or treating journey were words similar to what Tom had said. And he was right.
Hedgehog, Werehog, whatever, his feelings, and him as a whole, are important to these couple of humans in front of him. The very humans that got his back since forever.
Another wet chuckle escaped from his mouth. His smile was more wide than a while ago.
Then, Tom's smile grew afterwards.
"...What?" Sonic tilted his head slightly.
"I'm sorry." Tom said, looking away for one second before erupting into small laughter. Sonic was caught off guard by the sudden laughter and just stared at Maddie, who was also showing off a big smile.
"I'm so sorry, Sonic, you're just adorable." Tom finally managed to speak out.
"Wait, WHAT?!" Sonic screamed, backing off a few steps. "I'm what now?! Excuse me, buddy, but I am NOT adorable! Especially as the Werehog! I mean, look at me! What do you mean 'I'm adorable??'"
"From what I was told, werewolves are supposed to be ferocious, but you, sir..." Maddie says, beginning to reach out for his ears. He squealed and backed off even more, who is now right next to Carl.
"Don't even think about it, you two! I am not adorable, alright?!'' He warned them, trying to act tough, but it was useless.
"Compared to Ozzie, you look like an alien hedgehog version of a puppy! You ARE adorable." She says, finally being able to place her hands behind Sonic's ear.
"Don't do it."
From the look of Maddie's smug smile, she'll definitely do it.
The scratching from behind the ears finally commenced, and the Werehog's eyes grew in fear. He shall not be treated like some sort of puppy. He's not a puppy, and he is certainly not adorable-
Oh no. It feels good.
After just seconds of getting scratched, a goofy grin crept on Sonic's face and tried not to laugh, feeling ticklish. "Y-You guys are the worst!" He says between giggles.
Curse his back ears for being good weak spots.
His tail was wagging again as the ear scratchies continued, and Sonic's laughter was louder this time. "Aww, you like it, don't ya Sonic?" Tom asked.
"Q-Quit it! Hahaha!" Even though he sort of hated getting ear scratches, he needed this laugh after everything that had happened during this night.
The night was full of chaos on so many levels, he needed something to lift his spirits. Tom and Maddie were they to lift those spirits alright, but not with ear scratches!
At least he feels better finally after so long.
Eventually, Maddie stopped tickling the back of Sonic's ear and the Werehog tried to stop himself from laughing. "I-I'm sorry, give me one second-! Haha!" He snorted.
The couple just looked so happy to see and hear their hedgehog laugh again.
Carl was satisfied to see the Blue Devil cheered right back up again, but his thoughts were right back to Dark Gaia, and the fact that it's almost morning.
"I don't mean to ruin your moment, but..." He says, pointing out to the sky. The three looked up to see the dark sky becoming brighter slowly.
The sun is beginning to rise.
"Uh oh..." All of that laughter quickly washed away the moment he looked up at the sky, seeing most of the stars going away in seconds.
"If we hurry, we'll still have time to search for that Bracelet." Carl noted. "We can't waste any more time at this point."
"...Right." Tom says, getting back up.
Maddie gets up along with him. "Since you know so much about Dark Gaia, and probably Light Gaia, where do you think the bracelet is?" She asks.
"The heart of the forest of Green Hills. ...Hopefully." Carl sighed.
"Then come on!" Sonic says, jumping right back up on his feet as well. "We gotta get moving before those Nightmare jerks show up again!"
"And make sure you don't go crazy." Carl added.
"Right. That too..." He said, briefly looking down at his claws. He knew Dark Gaia isn't gone from his mind forever, and since the sun is rising soon, he needs to hurry this up before he loses his senses completely.
Or worse, hurt his family.
"Lead the way, Crazy Carl."
"Don't have to tell me twice, ya Blue Devil."
Carl runs off, with Maddie and Tom following him. Sonic stays behind for a while, looking down to the ground, feeling uncertain. His stomach was feeling uneasy.
You will not ignore me again.
"Heh. I was wondering when you were gonna show up." He spoke out to Dark Gaia.
You were lucky... somehow, but you won't take control for too long. The sun is rising, and you will fall, and be one with Dark Gaia.
A low, yet calm growl as let out by the space hog.
Soon, when the time comes, my darkness will reign over the Earth, as intended. No more retched light that burns upon my wondrous shadows. My energy will never be rid of. You are powerless against me.
"Maybe so," He spoke. "but Light Gaia sure isn't."
Then he dashed off, catching up with Tom, Maddie and Carl.
At the perfect moment, you will give me what I want.
-
"HEY! OVER HERE!" Carl cried out from the distance. The couple and the Werehog turned to see Carl looking over from behind a bush.
They push aside the leaves to see a small circle of gravel surrounding a tiny metal arch stabbing against the ground, front and center of a tall stone tablet of sorts, slowly breaking down after centuries of being there out in the open, and writings of an unknown language.
"Is that...?" Is all Sonic could say, looking out at the small half ring on the ground.
"It appears to be." Carl responds.
The group walks out of the bush and approaches the area with great caution. Looking around, including Sonic, for any Nightmares lurking in the dark.
Carl crouched down to take a good look at the ring. "Oh, yeah. This is the one, alright." Carl's smile was forming behind that bushy beard of his.
"The Light Gaia's Bracelet! We found it!" Sonic exclaimed, pumping both fists in the air. But the victorious feeling faded away for a while when a thought came.
"It looks really stuck in there, though..." He wondered out loud. "We can get it out. Right, guys?"
They all nodded.
"I'll do it." Tom says, going down on one knee. "Just be careful, Tom." Maddie, placed his hand on his shoulder, worried that he might pulled a bone or two.
"He'll be fine. He's the strongest guy I know!" Said the Werehog.
"We can't rush, but we need to get this wrapped up. The sun's almost here." Tom looked down at his watch.
It read 6:24AM.
Tom grab a hold of the bracelet with both of his hands and pulled hard. He grunted loudly, trying to get it off the ground as fast as possible.
Only a few itches of the bracelet got off the ground. Tom was already out of breath, but kept pulling anyways. "I'm helping." Maddie says, kneeling down and holding onto the bracelet next to Tom.
"Don't break it." Sonic says, feeling more impatient and nervous by the minute, waiting for something to pop out from behind the trees.
He nearly forgot about it.
Light is upon us. Now.
"Oh, no. Nonononono...!!" The throbbing pain was making a return. Dark Gaia is gaining back control. "NO! NOT NOW!" He pleaded through his teeth.
"Sonic! Remain calm! It's gonna be alright!" Carl held Sonic's arm tightly, hoping that someone's touch can help him snap out of it. "Remember that we got your back, Blue Devil!"
"GET... OUT... OF MY... HEAD...!" The Werehog growled quiet enough for the monster themself to hear. Blue sparks pop out his quills slowly.
Your power will be a great cause to my army. You will fall to my grasp and become part with Dark Gaia!
"Never... In a million years... You MONSTER!" Sonic barked.
"Any time now." Carl demanded calmly as the couple still struggled to pull the bracelet out of the ground.
But with enough strength, it was beginning to become more lose by the second, until finally...
"GAAGH!" With a loud grunt, Tom and Maddie managed to pull the bracelet free, revealing the full Light Gaia's Bracelet.
A huge, shiny, silver bracelet with some sort of click on the bottom, shows off a small bright emerald green orb on the top.
"The Bracelet...!" Sonic spoke weakly.
NO!!
"Gaaagh!!" He screamed out, catching Tom and Maddie's attention.
"NOW!" Yelled out Carl.
I WILL NOT FAIL TO THE LIKES OF YOU!!
Tom, with the bracelet in hand, ran up to the hedgehog and snapped it open for it to be big enough to fit him. "Hold still. You're going to be okay."
Carl moved Sonic's arm over to the sheriff but he kept trying to attack. "N-NO...! STOP...!"
"Hold still, little buddy." Tom kept saying, holding onto his kid's arm as he tries to put the bracelet on him. Dark Gaia's energy was getting stronger at this rate, and the transformation's second stage was about to start.
Now or never.
"Please work." Tom prayed under his breath as he snapped the bracelet back on, holding tightly on the Werehog's arm.
YOU WILL NOT- ... ...
It's voice stopped suddenly.
The pain faded away.
Sonic blinked.
Then, in an immediate second afterwards, a big burst of light shot out of Sonic's chest, unlike the first time he transformed, it was a bright green light, shooting out into the sky and through the clouds.
His eyes were glowing white, and was arisen off the ground as the energy of Dark Gaia was getting sucked out completely. The Light Gaia's Energy from within the bracelet's crystal emerges to erase Dark Gaia's.
The sickening dark purple smoke rose from out of the hedgehog's body and slowly disappear into the crystal, trapping and ridding Dark Gaia's Energy for good.
A blinding flash emits out of the hedgehog, and Tom, Maddie and Carl covered their sight for a while. "What's happening?!" Pretzel Lady cried out.
"Don't worry! This was supposed to happen!" Carl said.
Eventually, the flash and the beam was gone, and Sonic, who was high up in the air, began plummeting to the ground. Tom gasped and ran up to the falling hedgehog and let him fall into his arms, safe and sound.
"Buddy?! Are you alright?!" He asked, worry in his tone.
The space hog could only groan in response for a while, as he slowly opened his eyes. He blinked a couple of times before looking up to see his friend, his eyes now fully adjusted.
"Tom?" He finally said.
A small, relieved laugh escaped from the Donut Lord.
Sonic sits up, still in the sheriff's arms, looking around himself. "Hang on a second..." Blue, skinnier and less hairier arms? Check. Hands and paws back to normal? Check. Quills back to their usual style? Check.
"It... It worked! IT WORKED!" He yelled out, excitement and need for speed finally back into play. He jumped out of Tom's arms and ran around in a circle millions of times in lightning speed, laughing and cheering.
"WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!" He shrieked out his happiness for the whole world to hear, glad to finally be back to normal.
Tom, Maddie and Carl all laugh lightly, watching the little hedgehog run around the area and dance around a bit, never feeling more energetic in his life.
"Sonic the Hedgehog is back, baby! WHOOP WHOOP!" He exclaimed, doing a back-flip before stepping on a rock that nearly stabbed his foot. "Ow! Ow, ow, ow! That hurt! That really hurt! Ow!"
He painfully stepped away and checked on his foot, only to notice that both of his socks have giant holes underneath now. His socks are ruined. "Awww, man... Come on..." He whined.
His socks weren't the only things that were ruined, though. He even noticed he wasn't wearing gloves. They were ruined too. "Seriously...? Now I gotta get a new pair..."
"It's alright buddy," Tom says with a small chuckle. "we'll buy you some new gloves and socks later today. ...Right after I take a quick nap."
At the right moment, the sun was shining through the leaves of the trees. Morning has arrived.
Sonic was extremely relieved the whole supernatural mess is over with. Glad to not hear Dark Gaia's voice bugging him, and especially glad to not deal with the whole Werehog look.
"Thank goodness..." He sighed heavily. "It's finally over."
"Right?" Maddie was exhausted, yet happy to take care of the situation. "Couldn't have done it without your help, Carl. Thanks."
"Hey. It was a pleasure of mine to help out some friends." Carl said. "I'm just glad your little Blue Devil was back to normal just in time."
"You and me both, man." Donut Lord laughed, tiredly. "Though... I should probably let the town know about what was going on with Sonic."
"Definitely." Carl, Maddie and Sonic all said in agreement. "I especially owe Karen an apology." Sonic said, scratching the back of his head. The beat last for a short time when he chuckled suddenly. "But I highly doubt she'll even listen to me, so what's the point? Haha!"
"It's gonna be a long day for me, that's for sure..." Tom let out a tired sigh, needing some sleep despite needing to check up on the town and the people in it.
"Still..." Sonic began. "That sure was an adventure. I seriously thought I was gonna be the Werehog forever! I thought you'll all be too afraid of me..." He cupped his hands together, still feeling guilty about what happened a few hours ago.
"We were never afraid of you, bud." Tom kneeled down, placing a hand on his shoulder and patting him, comforting him.
That silly little cocky smile of Sonic's appeared on his muzzle. "Says the one who use a tranq dart on me. Ha!"
"It was an accident! Ugh, are you EVER gonna get over that?"
"Nerp!"
"Of course not."
The two goofballs laughed away, going in for a little hug. They needed this laugh. After a long night.
They needed this moment.
They're both glad to be part of this moment.
"Welp, I'm glad I get to help, but I should get back to my RV." Carl said. "Happy for you, Blue Devil. Welcome back."
The hedgehog's smile couldn't get any more huge than it already was. "Thanks, pal."
"I'll see ya'll later!" Carl waved goodbye before leaving, heading back to the woods. Tom got back up on his feet and walked over to Maddie. "You alright, hon?" He held her hand.
She took a deep breath, rubbing her thumbs against the back of his hand. "I'm okay... I'm okay." She said quietly, tears nearly forming in her eyes.
"I know that mess was pretty, well, messy, but it's all good now, okay? Sonic's still here. He's safe."
"Yeah, guys! No need to get yourself worked up!" Sonic said, winking. "I'm not going anywhere! Don't you worry!"
Then, a big, long yawn escaped from the hedgehog's mouth. After a restless journey as the Werehog and searching for the Light Gaia's Bracelet, he never felt so exhausted in a long time.
"I can't believe I stayed up all night..." He mumbled to himself, rubbing his eyes. "I really need to get some sleep..."
"Yeah, we should probably head back home." Maddie said, shuffling some of her hair out of her face, still feeling like a wreck after the whole Werehog thing.
"Good idea." Tom agreed. ruffling up his hair for a bit.
Tom and Maddie looked out to the forest, figuring out where they entered and where they should leave. "The whole town must be loosing their crap right now. I bet Wade couldn't sleep after hearing all the commotion." She mentioned.
"Haha! Yeah, probably." The sheriff laughed.
"I think the closest route to Green Hills is this way?" Maddie guessed, looking out to her right. "Let's go." She goes off.
Tom was about to follow her but then noticed that someone in the group was missing. "Sonic?" He looked around for a second before seeing the speed demon asleep, completely out, snoring away on the grass and his head was in his arms, already drooling on his hand.
He huffed a quiet chuckle, finding the sight quite cute, but he needs to be sleeping on a real bed.
He approached the sleepy hedgehog and kneel down to place a hand on Sonic. "Sonic? Buddy." He shook slightly, trying to wake him up. A small grumble was the only response.
"Sonic. Wake up, little buddy. Buddy?"
-
"Come on, little dude. It's time to get up. Wake up, Sonic."
"Nooooo... Five more minutes." Sonic groaned, trying to go back to sleep.
"It's almost past nine, I don't want you to sleep through the whole day."
"Wuh...? It's not past nine, I thought it was six or somethin', I don't know, lemme sleep..." He mumbled on before dozing off again, snuggling against his pillow.
...Wait a minute, pillow?!
"Hold up!" He cried, sitting up with a start. "What happened?! How did I get here?! How long was I asleep for?!"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Calm down, Blue Devil." Tom placed his hand back on the hedgehog's shoulder. "What's wrong?"
"I-I just fell asleep! In the woods! How did I end up here?" He asked, half asleep and confused about his surroundings. He was just at the forest a few seconds ago, what the heck happened?
"You weren't asleep in the woods?"
"Uhh, yeah, I was. You were there, and so was Maddie and Carl."
"...No??"
"Did you seriously forgot about the whole Werehog shtick or something? I thought- Wait. My gloves!" His hands suddenly caught his attention away from Tom.
"I got my gloves back! But how...?" Sonic is really confused on what's happening.
"Buddy, slow down. It's okay." Tom chuckled. "You just had a bad dream."
There was a beat. The hedgehog turned to face the Tom and blinked. Multiple times. "What? What do you mean? I-I thought I transformed into the Werehog and fought those weird lizard creatures and stuff! That didn't happen...?"
"Nope. None of that stuff happened. It was just Carl's story getting into your head." He said, patting his head. "It was only a dream, little buddy. You're alright."
"Man..." Sonic sighed. "It was just a dream? The whole time? Phew..." He rests his head back on his pillow. "At least I didn't actually hurt anybody. That was crazy!"
"Sounded like it."
"I'll admit," He said. "most parts of that dream was pretty cool but for the most part, it was kind of... Spooky." A small smile crept on his muzzle saying the last word.
"Definitely never eating Halloween candy before bed again." He said to himself, sighing in relief once more, looking up at the ceiling.
"I knew the candy had something to do with that nightmare of yours." Tom suddenly said.
The space hog's eyes grew wide open.
He sat up straight and faked a very nervous laugh. "I-I mean, I didn't eat any candy! That was probably a dream too!"
"You mean these?" Tom asked, before putting down a small pile of empty candy wrappers in front of Sonic. He gulped and audible gulp.
Busted.
"Ohh, boy."
"Thought you pretty clever, huh hedgehog?"
The hedgehog sighed and pushed aside the pile of candy wrappers, feeling silly. "At least the candies were delicious."
"You are just like me when I was your age, I swear..." Tom laughed as he takes the wrappers and puts them in Sonic's trash bag, and placed it back next to his bedside table.
"Guess you learned your lesson, huh?"
"Yeah. I just couldn't wait to eat all that candy! I'm sorry, Donut Lord." He scratched the back of his head, looking at his feet.
"Don't worry about it. The important thing is that you didn't eat ALL of the candy."
The hedgehog looked up at his friend for a moment and smiled. He sighed again. "I still can't believe that whole thing was just a dream! It felt so real! The transformation, those creatures, the action, everything! Kind of feel a little bummed out that it wasn't real..."
"Really? Kind of thought you'd be a little frightened after a dream like that." Tom said.
"It had some good moments! I was kicking some butt back there! It was actually kind of cool!" He beamed. "I was protecting you, Maddie and Carl from those Nightmare freaks and I was SUPER strong! And my arms can stretch! I didn't even know Nightmares could do that!"
"Uhh, last time I checked, Nightmares can't stretch their arms."
"...Oh. I guess my dream was just throwing in some new ideas." He giggled.
Sonic kicks off the sheets, and sat on the edge of his racecar bed. "So... Dark Gaia really was just a ghost story?" He asked.
"That's right." Tom replied. "But you know something? Even if we hear some silly ghost story, and think it's just simply a story, sometimes it just plays with our heads. Happened to me when I was younger when I first heard about Dark Gaia."
"It was a pretty spooky story, I'll admit."
"Yeah, but our imagination can get creative in a lot of ways. And I can tell that yours is very creative." He said with a smile.
Creative. Sonic knew his dreams were wild and fun, sometimes weird and maybe creepy, but he never thought about his dreams being creative.
His Werehog adventure was neat, and very spooky, but a lot of fun looking back at it. It sounded like a great ghost story on it's own. Plus, it's part werewolf part hedgehog. How could anyone not like that idea?
"Creative, huh...? Y'know, Tom? I think I have an whole new idea on my costume for next Halloween." He said, already taking notes in his head for the best Werehog costume ever.
It'll just have to wait until next year.

(A/N: I LOVE THIS ITERATION OF SONIC SM- ESPECIALLY HOW THE WRITERS WROTE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEM HIM AND TOM FOR THE FIRST AND SECOND FILM. I- SOBSSSS. I LOVE THESE TWO SM SO U KNOW I NEEDED TO MAKE A FIC ABT THEM 💞💕💖💗😭!!!)
Lee: Sonic🦔💙
Ler: Tom🍩🤎
Warnings: A little bit of angst in the beginning, harmful stimming (I’ll tag where it starts and ends) and tickling. If you are uncomfortable with any of the following please feel free to keep scrolling down :)
Summary: It’s been a couple months since the epic battle between Sonic and Eggman. The electric blue hedgehog could finally relax…right? Well…yes and no. Sonic has been living with the Wachowski’s for those couple months and it’s been great! But…he keeps feeling weird. His stomach gets fluttery and he can’t stop laughing for hours at a time…it's…really weird. Maybe he should talk to someone about this…
(A/N: Parent and child relationship. Nothing more. Nothing less. It sickens me that I have to put that in there (bc it should be obvious) but you can never be too sure…I just needed to make it clear that they love each other as family.)
——————————————————————————————————
Sonic was sitting up on his beanbag and playing with the rubix cube Maddie gave him about a week ago. He was dressed in a sweatshirt, a gift from Tom that was like 3 times his own size, going almost to his knees and blue fuzzy socks. He groaned as he finished solving the cube again for probably the 12th time now. Speaking of which, you’re probably wondering where he got the rubix cube from…and before you ask, no he did not steal it. It was quite the opposite actually.
Maddie noticed that Sonic was very fidgety at times and often pulled at his quills when he was nervous about something, or completely bored. So she decided to go shopping and buy the blue hedgehog some fidget toys. And by “some”, Sonic means like about 60-70 at least…he hasn’t counted but by the looks on how freaking heavy the box was when she gifted it to him, his estimation probably wasn’t that far off.
Sonic groaned again, dropping the rubix cube he had in his hands and placed it on his desk, making sure to put it down delicately so he didn’t accidentally dent it; out of all of the fidget toys this one was Sonic’s favorite and he didn’t want it getting ruined under any circumstances. The hedgehog flopped on his beanbag, looking up at the ceiling and putting his pillow to his face before abruptly groaning loudly for like the 100th time, but at least now it was muffled by the pillow.
Sonic wanted something but he didn’t know what…and this feeling was starting to get on his nerves.
Well- no- scratch that. He did- he did know what he wanted. But there’s no way in all of Green Hills he was gonna tell anyone about it.
There- there was this feeling in his stomach, but he didn’t know what the literal hell it was, and it’s been eating him from the inside since he’s come to Green Hills. His stomach felt fluttery, almost as if there were butterflies instead of intestines- but not in a bad way! In a very weird, confusing, nice way? If that makes sense? And another thing, he can't seem to stop giggling to himself. Which is odd. Because he didn’t even hear a joke or anything! He was just…giggling. Like what? But most importantly, he was craving physical affection apparently??? Ugh. See why he wasn’t gonna tell anyone about this feeling? Or…whatever this was?
Sonic looked at his phone- not far from where he was lying down on his beanbag. He remembers Maddie saying every time she left before work in the morning that if he needed anything, to text or call her…
This is probably what she meant.
But he didn’t want to bother her. Sonic knew how important Maddie’s job was and he didn’t want to make it more stressful. Besides, what was she supposed to say to her coe-working people if Sonic called or texted? Oh! Sorry! The over-sized hedgehog I have living in my house wants to talk about this weird feeling he’s feeling! Hm? Oh, what feeling you ask? He doesn’t quite know exactly!
Yeah. Thanks but no thanks. Sonic could handle this weird feeling on his own. Yep. He could totally handle this weird new feeling by himself. Uh-huh. He’s got this.
Maddie…Maddie wouldn’t mind…right?
Oh fuck it.
Sonic grabbed his phone and unlocked it, immediately going through his contacts to find Maddie- which wasn't hard. He only had two contacts: her and Tom.
✨💖The Magnificent Marvelous Maddie💖✨
Hey Maddie
If uh
If you’re not busy…can I ask you a question?
Sonic turned his phone off and put it next to him and after a couple seconds of waiting the blue hedgehog immediately regretted sending those three texts to Maddie. She’s probably busy anyway. Sonic could figure out this feeling by himself-
PING!
Sonic almost jumped out of his seat at the sudden loud sound coming from his phone. He really needs to figure out how to turn that sound down…he can feel it still ringing in his ears. He turned on his phone to see a text notification- 3 actually- from the one and only Maddie Wachowski…
Well that was fast.
Hi, sweetie!
And of course you can ask me a question ☺️!
What’s on your mind, honey?
Sonic exhaled the breath he didn’t even notice he was holding in, unlocking his phone and going into messages to properly text her.
I’ve been…
I’ve been feeling weird lately- and idk why
Ever since I’ve come to Green Hills to stay w/ u guys I’ve felt this way…and idk what it is and it’s been pissing me off lately.
So I was hoping…maybe you could help me figure out what it is?
Of course!
Could you maybe try to describe it?
The thing is idk how to!
I just- my stomach feels all fluttery
Not in a bad way tho! Not like a roller-coaster fluttery or about-to-go-on-stage-and-sing-in-front-of-millions-upon-millions-of-people fluttery
But like- a good fluttery I guess??? I just feel rlly giggly and stuff and it’s weird- but weird in a good way…
That doesn’t make any sense, does it?
No no! I think I understand, sweetie
And I think I can help 😊
WAIT- HUH???
YOU CAN???
Well, not me exactly
As of I’m not home right now
But I’m sure Tom can help!
Wait what-?
How can Tom help w/ this I’m so confused 😭😭😭
Trust me
In the past, I’ve had the feeling you’re feeling right now and Tom is the best person to help with it- so just tell him what you told me!
Uh…alright!
I guess I could do that
Thanks Maddie
It’s no problem, Sonic sweetie 😊
Okay, thanks again- I’m gonna go talk to him now
Bye!
Okay bye! Love you 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️☺️☺️☺️
Love you too 😗❤️
Sonic got up from his beanbag chair, put his phone inside of the desk and opened the hatch downstairs. Sonic quietly tiptoed down the stairs, making sure to dodge the places in the steps that he knew squeaked if he stepped too hard, peeking over the stairway to see Tom watching TV- and from the looks of it it looked like some sheriff documentary- he’s been watching those a lot lately…but Sonic doesn’t understand the hype. The sheriff’s on the TV could be talking about some random paint splatter on the ground and Tom would be hooked.
“I can hear you trying to be quiet up there, Sonic.” Tom chuckled, still facing the TV as he went to grab the remote on the armrest and pause the TV. The brunette turned to Sonic with a “hah! Caught ya” grin, a grin Sonic knew all too well in his last months of living with him.
The hedgehog sighed in defeat of being caught, walking down the stairs and going next to the couch Tom was sitting at. The brunette had a grey/gray shirt on with a light plaid print jacket, matching with some black pants and white socks.
“Uh…’sup, Tom.” Sonic said as casually as he could before leaning on the couches’ arm rest. The brunette eyed Sonic suspiciously, raising one eyebrow as he crossed his arms. Sonic started to sweat under the older man’s glare, whistling and looking anywhere but Tom’s direction.
“What did you do, Sonic?” Tom sighed, taking the blue hedgehogs’ sudden nervousness as a sign of him doing something he wasn’t supposed to. “I didn't do anything!” Sonic said, mimicking Tom’s expression and pose. The two looked at each other in the pose for a solid minute or two before laughing at their silliness.
“So what do you need, little man?” Tom asked. Sonic cleared his throat, fiddling with his hands and began looking at his feet because honestly? Staring at the ground was much much more easier than looking at Tom at the moment. “I just…I figured we could- y’know- hang out I guess?” The blue hedgehog started, “Some uhm…y’know some father-son bonding activities…?” Sonic said sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck, still looking down on the ground.
There was an uncomfortable silence between the two and Sonic didn't like it. He didn't like it one bit. And the more the silence dragged on the more the blue hedgehog started to second guess himself about coming down to the living room.
Pfft, “Father-son bonding?” He really has reached a whole new level of patheticness, huh? Why would Tom want to spend time with him? He’s just keeping him around because he pity’s him. He doesn’t actually enjoy his company. Just wait until Tom gets tired of him, then he’ll be all alone again-
Oh this was a mistake.
This was such SUCH a mistake.
***Harmful stimming starts***
The hedgehog started lightly pulling on his quills out of nervousness with one hand while his other hand started tapping the side of his leg, “O-Or whatever. If- If you want to of course. I don’t want it to seem like you're being forced, hah!” Sonic said, letting out the best fake laugh he could muster before speaking again. “I-If you’re busy- y’know….with, uhh, you’re sheriff stuff…that’s fine as well. I don’t- I don’t care.” Sonic started slowly backing away from Tom, still pulling on his quills- but a tad bit harder this time as his hand tapping on his leg started increasing faster.
Sonic could hear faint talking in front of him but he couldn’t focus on it. The only thing he needed to focus on was leaving before he embarrassed himself more. “Y’know what? I-I should go, you’re probably doing something busy anyway, uh…lemme get out of your hair, man.” Sonic grimaced, turning away and going to the steps, but before he could walk any farther Tom grabbed both his hands gently.
***Harmful stimming stops***
“Hey…let’s not do that, okay? You’re hurting yourself….” Tom said softly, holding Sonic’s hands in his own as he kneeled down to try and match Sonic’s height. “Where are your fidget toys?” Tom gently asked, trying his best to keep the questions short and sweet to not overwhelm the younger. These types of moments have happened before in the Wachowski’s house; when Sonic started to panic, asking him too many questions would get him even more upset, so when this happened they kept the questions to a minimum and straight to the point. “I…I left them upstairs…” Sonic mumbled.
“Oh. That’s okay…uh…here. Sit down on the couch for a sec.” The brunette said as he picked up Sonic and sat him on the couch. Rubbing his head affectionately before walking away to the kitchen rummaging through the kitchen shelves before coming out with a blue squishy ball. He came back to Sonic who gratefully accepted the ball. Tom sat next to Sonic as the younger leaned onto his shoulder, taking another deep breath and exhaling, muscles once tense now relaxed.
“Sorry about that…” Sonic said, squeezing the stress ball harder and glaring at it as if it stole his last chili dogs. Well this wasn’t how he was planning this conversation with Tom to go. The older looked at Sonic sadly before sighing and turning his gaze looking straight ahead to the paused TV. “You don’t have anything to apologize for, kid. It’s alright.” Tom said. The blue hedgehog hummed at the comic, taking a couple more deep breathers.
There was that uncomfortable silence again, the one that Sonic despised. “I just…I dunno. I feel weird…?” Sonic said, squeezing his squishy fidget ball at a faster pace this time. The older didn't say anything but completely turned to Sonic, letting him know he was listening. The younger somewhat shrunk under the older mans’ look, feeling a tad bit pressure to go on but decided to ignore it. He wanted- no. He needed to get this off of his chest.
“Ever since I’ve come to stay with you and Maddie after the defeat of Dr. Robotnik, I’ve felt…odd. I feel tingly, and fluttery and it’s just…weird, because I’ve never felt like this before, ever. I talked to Maddie about it in text and she said to talk to you about it…so uh…here I am!” Sonic sheepishly said.
Tom chuckled, “Is that why you said you wanted some Father-son bonding?” The blue hedgehog blushes at the mention, nodding his head. The older one chuckled once again, rubbing Sonic’s head affectionately, “I’d be happy to help you with this fluttery-feeling, buddy!” The blue hedgehog quickly looked at Tom as his ears went up in surprise.
“Wait. Really?” Sonic asked. “Of course! But before I do, I gotta ask you a question…” Tom said waiting a dramatically long time before continuing his sentence. “Are you ticklish?” The older asked, smirking and raising an eyebrow up. There was a silence between the two, but only this time this one was in complete and utter confusion. The younger ones' eyebrows creased together trying to put together what he was just asked, “Um…gesundheit?”
“What? No, kid.Tickling. Y'know, being ticklish?” Tom said as he wiggled his fingers near Sonic’s face only to be met by a confused look. “I dunno what you are talking about, man…” Sonic chuckled, now relaxing in the hug as he chuckled at the older mans’ surprised face.
Tom’s dumbfounded expression slowly turned to a soft, genuine smile, then it slowly turned into an evil grin. This kid had no idea what tickling is!
This kid had no idea what tickling is…
Oh Tom is gonna change that very quickly.
“Uh…Tom? You okay over there? Your face kinda looks like that green person we watched on Christmas…” Sonic said, wincing at the memory of the man’s genuine expression slowly slowly turning into an evil one. Tom stopped with his evil grin (for now at least), and raised his left eyebrow in amusement. “You mean The Grinch?” He asked, laughing when the blue hedgehog nodded happily at the familiar name. “Yeah, yeah! That dude!” Sonic smiled.
“I need you to stay perfectly still for this to work though, okay?” Tom said in the best serious voice he could muster, but probably not as serious as he thought since right after he stopped talking Sonic started laughing a bit. “Pfft, whatever you say, Donut Lord.” Sonic snickered, hopping into Tom’s lap facing sideways.
Tom then began to lightly scratch along Sonic’s sides, the reaction was almost immediate as the blue hedgehog began to squirm lightly and grab at the brunette’s wrists; but not pushing them away. Sonic held his breath; trying not to laugh but that plan started to crumble as Tom began to poke at the youngers’ sides; more quickly than he was before. Sonic let out a tiny shriek before descending into little giggles, kicking his legs and shaking his head. Tom smiled at the adorable sight.
“Whahat? Hehey-! Hehey wahahait! Whahat ahahare yohou dohoing?” Sonic asked while becoming a giggly squirmy mess. Tom chuckled at the youngers’ question, making sure to go easy on him since this was his first time being tickled, so he’d start off with light tickles…for now at least.
“I’m tickling you, silly! Since it does seem to me that you happen to be a bit ticklish~!” Tom cooed, now using two hands to tase around Sonic’s sides. Sonic threw his head back, suddenly lost in a puddle of giggles and fell on the couch, but still in Tom’s grasp as the brunette tickled up and down his sides. “Whahat ahare you tahahalking about?” Sonic giggly asked, his legs lightly stomped on the couch as some pillows fell in the process.
“Hmm, hold on…” Tom said as he grabbed his phone from his jacket pocket, typing up something but making sure to keep the blue hedgehog in a giggly squirmy mess. “Ah, okay. Goggle states this: Tickling is the act of touching a part of a body in a way that causes involuntary-“ “Ihihi dohohon’t knohow whahat thahat meeheeans!” Sonic whined interrupting Tom, shaking his head back and forth giggling up a storm in the older mans’ lap. “You didnt even let me finish!” Tom laughed, moving one hand to tickle Sonic’s neck while the other still tickled his side.
“PFFT- nAhAHAH! GeHEt ohOUT ohohOHOF theHEhehere!” Sonic giggly demanded, still holding Tom’s wrist as he scrunched up his shoulders. The older man chuckled before digging both of his hands in both sides of the blue hedgehog’s neck, fingers fluttering up, down, left, and right. Sonic’s feet drummed on the couch, trying to make a daring escape but anytime he was even a bit close to leaving, Tom would poke Sonic’s sides, leaving the blue hedgehog to be an adorable giggly mess. “Stahay still!” Tom playfully scolded.
“THIhihIHIs ihihis soHO weeheeird!” The hedgehog giggled, his face beginning to turn a light red. And honestly, if Tom could start crying, he would- out of happiness of course. This was to fucking darn cute.
“How many ribs do you think you have, Sonic?” Tom asked as he held both of Sonic’s arms up against the couch, trying his best to compose himself from not crying from the younger ones’ adorable reactions to the pokes. “Mahaddie sahahaid weehee hahave twehenty-fohour; twehehelve ohon eeheeach sihihide!” Sonic giggly answered, as he remembered Maddie did a walk-through on the human body and how many bones it has.
“Hm…you sure? Maybe I should count them for you…” Tom didn’t even spare the giggly blue hedgehog a second to protest as he pressed his thumb into the lowest rib on the right side of Sonic’s ribcage, kneading and circling at a very very slow pace against the artificial bone. Sonic screeched at the sudden sensation against his ribs, kicking his legs a bit faster as Tom slowly slowly slowly began to “count his ribs”.
“One…two…three…” Tom counted aloud, remaining on a rib for about 5 seconds before moving up to a different one. Sonic lurched in Tom’s lap, attempting to pry himself out by pushing at Tom’s wrists but only caused the older to pin up his arms and continue kneading at his ribs. “NahAHA! WahahHAHAIT, plehHEHEase!” Sonic whined throughout his frantic cries of laughter. “Ihi sahAHAId iHi hahaHAVE tweHEHEnty foHOUR!”
“I'm just double checking!” Tom innocently said as if he wasn’t completely wrecking the boy in his lap at the moment. The blue hedgehog squirmed and squealed at the tickly feeling at his ribs, being unable to do anything but just take it. This went on for a couple more numbers but then Tom suddenly stopped “counting” Sonic’s ribs, giving the kid another breather before hatching another evil plan. “Wait, what number was I on, Sonic?”
“Tohohom! Yohou lihihiterally ohonly counted toohoo sihihix-!”
“Oh, well. I lost count! Guess I have to start all over again~!
Sonic froze in place, laughter now raising an octave as he helplessly squirmed in Tom’s grasp. “WahAHaH- waHahaHAIT *snort* nOHo dahHa- *snort* dohOHOHOn’t!” Sonic snorted, descending into a puddle of maddening cackles feeling the fluttery feeling again. So this was the feeling he was feeling…? He’d have to ask Tom later, when he’s not getting tickled to pieces.
“Awh~! That’s so cute~! You snort when you laugh?” Tom cooed, wiggling his fingers near the blue hedgehog's ribs but very very close to touching him. Sonic’s laughter became more frantic and loud, squirming underneath Tom, and it's not like he could defend himself either! His arms were pinned up! This entire situation just screamed “unfair”. “NahaHAO! IHI *snort* doHOHon’t!” Sonic giggly said, knowing that- yes. Yes he did snort when he laughed, he did just a couple seconds ago…but no way in all of Green Hills he was gonna admit it, especially in this situation.
“Oho really? What was that adorable noise you made just then, hmm?” Tom smugly asked. “YohOu’re heehEEARihing thihIHIngs…” Tom fondly rolled his eyes as he pinched and kneaded Sonic’s ribs, leaving absolutely no bone left out from his tickle torture. Sonic threw his head back and cackled like a madman, snorting every now and again as he squirmed like a worm, trying to stop the ticklish sensation at his ribs.
“NAHAHAO! DAHAHAD *snort* PLEHEASE!” Sonic cried. Tom’s eyes widened at the name title the younger gave, not sure if the blue hedgehog meant to say it, but was very honored and happy at the mention. It made his heart melt. “Please what, Sonic? Pleaseeeeee keep tickling you?” Tom smugly teased, grin widening as he saw Sonic’s face heat up in embarrassment. Guess he’s weak to the T-word, huh? Oho I can and will use that to my advantage…
“DAHAHA- *snort* OHOHO MY GOHOD! STAHAHAP SAHAHAYING THAHAT!” Sonic yelled as he shook his head back and forth. “Stop saying what, exactly? Tickle~? Ticklish~? Tickled~? Or do you want me to simply stop talking? Which one?” Tom laughed. “YEHEHES!” Sonic cried, not even completely knowing what he just said ‘yes’ to- he was too lost in his own laughter. Tom stopped tickling Sonic, letting him have one last breather before the final kill.
“Ever heard of raspberries, Sonic?” Tom asked, knowing that he the blu hedgehog has, but probably not the ones he’s talking about. “Lihihike thehe fruhuhuit?” Sonic giggly asked. “Nope! Here, lemme show you…” Tom said as he blew a raspberry on the youngers’ tummy causing him to absolutely howl in laughter.
“OHO MY *snort* GAAAHAHAD WAHAHAIT! WAHAHAIT!” Sonic screamed, completely not prepared for this new tickly feeling on his stomach…and why did it sound so freaking funny??? That was just gonna make him laugh more! “Wait for what Sonic~?” Tom teased as he blew more raspberries on his tummy, and with his free and scribbling up and down Sonic’s ribs.
“WAHAHAIT- *snort* IHI *snort* DOHON’T DOOHOO THAHAHAT!” Sonic cried, blue sparks suddenly forming on the kids’ quills, sparkling here and there but some going off of his quills and onto the carpet floor, disappearing. Sonic cackled in the older Tom’s lap, the blue lightning on his quills adding a new ticklish sensation on him.
“Huh. Well they do say you learn new things everyday…” Tom mumbled, watching some of the lighting sparks fall off of the younger ones quills. “PLEHEHEASE! IHIT’S *snort* TIHIHICKLISH!” Sonic screamed, more tiny little blue sparks flying off of his quills and onto the floor. Tom chuckled at the little blue hedgehogs’ reactions, moving down to Sonic’s lower belly as he began to lightly flutter his fingers around it.
“I think you mean ‘it tickles’, bud.” Tom said into Sonic’s tummy, chuckling. Tom was the sheriff of Green Hills- not the sheriff of grammar; at least last time Sonic checked. Tom began to blow more raspberries all over the little blue hedgehog’s stomach, making sure to add a few nibbles now and again to keep the younger in stitches- which worked out really well on Tom’s part. Sonic’s laughter became more high pitched and loud, snorting more frequently as the older started to raspberry and nibble his stomach.
“OHOHO MY GOHOD *snort* WHATEVER!” Sonic screamed as Tom began to switch between his lips and teeth nibbling mercilessly at Sonic’s tummy leaving the poor blue hedgehog in absolute hysterics.
Tom dug his fingers in the blue hedgehogs underarms. And Sonic screamed. The hedgehog's feet were kicking probably about a million miles per hour, just looking like a complete and utter blur while the blue sparks on Sonic’s quills multiplied.
“So~! I think I found your most ticklish spot, huh~?” Tom chuckled, lightly scratching his fingers in Sonic’s underarms, making sure to dodge the little sparks of blue lightning coming off of Sonic’s quills- which  he knew tickled the younger even more due to how much he was laughing. Sonic screamed underneath the brunette’s grasp, trying his best to not kick him in the face but the task being very very hard as his feet were kicking around a million miles per hour.
“NOHOHO- *snort* DAHAHAH! DOHOHON’T!” Sonic howled, shaking his head back and forth while the heels of his feet dug into the couch. Tom, chuckled, now scribbling and scratching in Sonic’s underarms, “I’m barely even touching you!” Tom laughed, almost as hard as Sonic as he began to pick up the pace with his scribbling.
“STAHAHA! *snort* NAHAHA- *snort* PLEHEHEA- *snort* DAHAHAHAD!” Sonic screamed, as happy tears started forming in his eyes which Tom took as a sign that Sonic has enough tickles for today. “Alright, alright! Just say Uncle.” Tom calmly said as if Sonic wasn’t screaming his head off. “WHAHA- *snort* WHAHAT?!
“Juhust say Uncle, kiddo-“ Tom said as he accidentally hit a very ticklish spot in Sonic’s underarm causing the younger to let out a girl-like squeal.
“OKAHAHAY! OKAHAHAY! UHUHUNCLE!”
Tom stopped tickling Sonic; letting the kid have a breather and putting him into a tight embrace. The blue hedgehog giggled softly in the hug as he melted into the touch. “You okay?” Tom chuckled, smirking at the younger who was still giggling from the tickles from before. Sonic nodded, wiping away his happy tears with his hand still giggling a bit. “So~, I’m Dad now, huh? What happened to being ‘too cool for your human parental names’?” Sonic blushed, pulling up his hoodie and sinking deeper into Tom’s chest. “Shuhut ihit….”
“I really don’t mind you calling me Dad, bud.” Tom smiled. “Wahait whahat…? Reheally?” Sonic asked in genuine confusion looking up at the older with shiny eyes- Tom swore Sonic’s pupils had stars in them at that moment. “Yeah, I don’t mind.” Tom confirmed, patting Sonic’s back. Sonic’s eyes glistened a bit but the younger one soon wiped them. “Cool…”
“So…that's called tickling?” The blue hedgehog asked.
“Mhm.”
“So…you tickled me?”
“Yep.”
“Huh.” Sonic said, not being able to say anything more than that. “How’s that fluttery feeling in your stomach doing?” Tom asked. “Fine, it's doing just fine.” Sonic smiled as Tom smiled back, rubbing his head affectionately and chuckling.
“Let's go grab you some water, kiddo. And how about we make some cupcakes after that-“ Tom wasn’t even able to finish his sentence as the blue hedgehog excitedly ran to the kitchen chugging a glass of water and putting out ingredients to make the cupcakes. Tom chuckled, walking over to Sonic to join him.
Tom definitely had to make a note to tell Maddie about his later, but as of right now he was going to bake some cupcakes with his son. And if they burn down the house in the process, oh well…they both can try coming up with a good excuse to tell Maddie as to why the house is in ashes.

Follow up to the nightmare question- for mermaid stobotinik.
What if Stone stuck his hand towards Ivo’s head to fast and it made Ivo flinch away?
What if that when he assures Stone he wasn’t flinching because he’s a monster but because at the orphanage he got hit a lot.
Or worse. What if he doesn’t just flinch but goes into a full on panic flashback- where Stone has to calm him down from.
Altogether, it had been a successful day.
Stone found plenty of interesting specimens for Robotnik, the badniks documented an unusually timed migration of Atlantic sturgeon, and he’d gotten to have a long, luxurious swim in the ocean. It’s always nice to stretch his fins and swim as fast as he possibly can through the turbulent undercurrent, but as strange as it is, he’s grown to love his tank in Robotnik’s lab just as much. Whenever Stone hears Robotnik’s voice through one of the aqua-badniks reminding him to return to the surface, Stone’s heart soars, and any feelings of nostalgia he has remaining for his birthplace fade almost instantly.
Today, Robotnik’s voice sounds oddly tame. “Wrap it up, Stone,” Robotnik snaps, his voice hard to make out through the badnik’s speakers. They must be deeper underwater than Stone realized.
Stone pulls off his backpack and places the last specimen inside - a perfect junonia snail shell - and then slips it back on, signaling to the badniks to follow him back to the surface.
He feels his bones readjust to the new gravity as he breaches the surface of the water. Per the usual protocol, the badniks switch to flight mode and raise up out of the water to scan the surrounding area, ensuring that there are no unwelcome visitors within range. When Stone receives the all-clear, he swims to shore, eyes scanning for Robotnik.
He can feel him nearby. Usually, Robotnik is tucked away in the mobile lab while Stone is out on a survey mission, but for some reason today feels different. He’s not in the lab, Stone is sure of it - there’s a powerful pull in Stone’s gut guiding him, instead, to the cliffs.
Stone motions to the badniks to locate Robotnik, and immediately the drones fly off toward a rockier stretch of beach not too far away from the mobile lab. Stone follows them, finally spotting Robotnik sitting on a small outcropping overlooking the ocean. A flutter of concern courses through Stone at the sight of him sitting there; Robotnik is never stationary, he’s never this quiet and contemplative. Stone pulls himself onto the shore, shouldering off his bag and handing it off to a badnik to take into the lab. He then makes his way to where Robotnik sits, his tail leaving a deep, curved groove in the sand as he goes.
Robotnik finally notices him when he’s practically beside him, tossing him a brief look of acknowledgment over his shoulder. “Took you long enough,” he grunts.
Stone sits on the rocks next to Robotnik, letting his tail hang over the cliff. With one arm supporting himself, he signs one-handed:
Is everything okay?
Robotnik snorts. “Of course I’m okay, why wouldn’t I be? Am I not allowed to look at a sunset every now and again?”
Stone looks out at the horizon, noticing the deep purple sky settling over the ocean. There’s a warm layer of red-orange breaking through the purple, the very last sliver of sunlight dipping below the horizon. It looks like my tail. “I hadn’t noticed.” Robotnik grates out.
Stone watches Robotnik curiously. There’s something wrong, he can practically feel Robotnik’s tumultuous emotions as if they were his own, crashing over him like a wave and churning up his stomach with anxiety.
Some strands of hair have fallen over Robotnik’s forehead - the humidity’s fault, probably. Stone absently reaches a hand up to gently brush the hair aside, but before he can make contact, Robotnik flinches away from his hand and grabs Stone’s wrist tightly in his hand.
Stone freezes. Robotnik turns to look at him, and for a moment, neither of them moves or says a word. Robotnik’s eyes are wide, his face pink in embarrassment, almost like he’s surprised at his own reaction. He comes back to himself quickly and releases Stone’s wrist, turning away to look back out at the ocean.
“Time to get moving,” Robotnik says stiffly, pressing a few buttons on his control gloves to get the mobile lab ready for departure. “I hope you got me some good stuff, Stone. You were down there long enough, you’d better have something to show for it.”
Wait, Stone moves so that Robotnik has no choice but to look at him. Something is wrong. Tell me what it is.
“Nothing’s wrong!” Robotnik growls. “Why are you so insistent that there’s something wrong with me? I’m feeling better than ever.”
You can’t lie to me! Stone signs. He makes a circular motion over his own neck and collarbone, mirroring where his marks are patterned over Robotnik’s skin, hidden under his shirt and jacket. We’re connected.
Robotnik scoffs. “Ridiculous. The ‘mating bond’, is it?” He outlines the words in sarcastic air quotes. “You’ve explained it before. It’s pseudoscience, Stone. No such phenomena exists.”
Stone would be hurt by those words if he truly thought Robotnik believed that, but he doesn’t. Robotnik has a habit of closing himself off, putting up walls between them when things become too intimate. He knows Robotnik feels the bond too, though he has yet to outright admit it.
Whether or not you accept it, I can feel that something is wrong, Stone says. When you stopped me just now, I felt fear in you. If I’ve done anything to make you afraid of me–
“No, that’s… No.” Robotnik sighs, swatting Stone’s hand down to shut him up. “I’m not afraid of you, moron. Why would I be? I’m not afraid of anything. Not anymore. Though… I suppose sometimes certain memories dredge themselves up from the depths of my mind when things get a little too quiet. That’s all this was, alright? Just old, superfluous memories that are best left forgotten. Meaningless drivel.”
Stone frowns. Not to me.
Robotnik’s expression softens. “This might come as a shock to you, but I’m not exactly well-versed in the language of physical intimacy,” he mutters. “Or… physical anything, really. A fact I’m not particularly upset about, you understand, I’m only trying to illustrate that– well, that this is all new territory for me. And I’m not always prepared for-- well, for… UGH!” he cuts off his own ramblings with a frustrated groan. “This is so ridiculous.”
Stone shuffles a little closer to his mate. Moving more slowly and carefully this time, he sets his hand on Robotnik’s knee. It’s not. Please, keep going?
Robotnik doesn’t flinch away this time, to Stone’s relief. He squeezes the bridge of his nose irritably. “Rewiring my brain takes time, alright? For most of my life, physical contact was not something I relished. Orphanages in the 60s weren’t exactly loving, nurturing environments for children - not that I needed any of that nonsense.”
Stone frowns. What does that word mean? “An orphanage is a place where human children go to live if they don’t have parents to take care of them. Though, that’s a bit of an antiquated term nowadays - I suppose it would be called a group home, now.” Robotnik explains.
Stone’s mind spins. He had no idea such places existed, and now that he knows, he can’t fathom why any child would be mistreated in such a place. Robotnik catches Stone’s confused expression and grins wryly. “Let me guess - your species takes exceptional care of their young, hm? No deep sea orphanages to be found?”
Stone shakes his head. All the calves born in the pod are raised by everyone in the group.
Robotnik hums. “‘It takes a village’...” he muses softly. “You may have no frame of reference for this, then. Humans are notoriously selfish creatures who often discard or mistreat their young at the drop of a hat. That’s all you need to know.”
Stone squeezes Robotnik’s knee. Other humans hurt you? Robotnik chuckles darkly. “Only until I was old enough to hurt them back. Then they all kept a wide berth.”
Stone’s fins frill dangerously. I’ll kill them.
Robotnik slides his hand over Stone’s. “I appreciate the sentiment, Stone, but I doubt I can track down all of the teachers, caregivers, foster parents and schoolyard bullies who have ever hassled me. None of them are worth the trouble.” He glances at Stone’s tail. “We should get back to the lab, you’re starting to dry out.”
Wait, Stone signs. He shifts his weight to move closer to Robotnik, pushing between his knees. Robotnik allows it, watching him approach with calm curiosity. Stone taps a finger against his own mouth questioningly - not a proper sign, he knows, but Robotnik understands regardless.  “Yes,” Robotnik says softly. “You may.”
Stone wraps his arms around Robotnik’s neck and gently presses their mouths together, unable to prevent a musical sound from vibrating in his throat when Robotnik leans into him, kissing him back earnestly. Stone is still new at kissing - well, Robotnik is too, actually - but he makes sure to keep his teeth away from Robotnik’s delicate lips, and suppresses his second jaw from extending although it's difficult to do so when he's excited. And it is always exciting to touch Robotnik - all the more reason to make sure Robotnik always enjoys being touched by him. If Robotnik has never known loving physical contact, Stone will make sure that’s all he receives going forward. His mate deserves to feel safe and loved.
When they break apart, Stone rests their foreheads together. Robotnik sighs gently against Stone’s lips.
“The sunset. It did look like your tail,” he mutters grudgingly. “A little.”
Stone smiles. He can feel his fins glowing with their gold spots, the spots only for Robotnik. I promise I will never hurt you, he signs, and he knows Robotnik can feel the intention slipping through their bond from the way his breath suddenly hitches. Robotnik laughs through his nose, letting his eyes fall closed. The salty sea air blows gently over them as waves slosh melodically against the cliff, the sun finally dipping below the horizon to cast the beach in soft hues of red and violet.
“I know,” Robotnik says, with absolute certainty. “I know you wouldn’t.”
