Dethvanity is really funny to me conceptually as an episode because you can see how little they had to make the characters insecure about for the bit. They swing for obvious lowblow choices with Pickle' baldness and Nathan's weight and even those require some suspension of disbelief because ok. Sure. Nathan '(said extremely proudly) never skipped a meal in my life!' Explosion is insecure about being a big man now. Nathan *guy who everyone thinks is smoking hot 99% of the time* Explosion is a tiny bit larger than usual and is insecure about it now. Lol. Lmao even.

But anyway then we hit Skwisgaar and Toki and there's like NOTHING to swing for, you can see them going uhhh ok Skwis doesn't sleep he probably drinks a lot of coffee, and Toki? Shit, what does Toki have to be insecure about with his looks. He's perfect, he's adorable, he's ripped. Um. FUCK IT, HE'S DOING NOTHING BUT EATING LEMONS. jhy is definitely a trans girl and is addressed as a woman in canon. i think he/him was used for her because the english translator at the time was transphobic, and the original korean test used either neutral or feminine pronouns. over 300 chapters in is when the translation finally uses she/her for her exclusively, whether it’s her to referring to herself or the narration

god i hate when translation fucks everything up lmao, you see it a lot w east asian media (i mostly see it w anime/manga but since orv is a korean novel/webtoon i didnt want to just say anime like a weeb) where a character will be refered to exclusively w neutral pronouns and then in translation they just Pick A Gender

Examples that come to mind for me are Crona from Soul Eater and Inukashi from No.6, but i know theres more cause i remember ppl having to explain this repeatedly

theres also Grell Sutcliff from Black Butler who is unfortunately misgendered by other characters but she and the author refer to her as she/her, so shes pretty obviously a trans woman to me (not a great rep, sure but still trans) and theres still ppl in the fandom trying to say shes a gay man

translators stop intentionally fuckin shit up challenge

#in portuguese we dont have gender neutral pronouns so thats a big challenge in translation.l #theres neo pronouns but its v new and not as widely accepted as the usual they/them in english would be #<- this is me saying english has no excuses they/them is right there #anyway i read the soul eater manga in portuguese and there was a real effort from the translation team to be as neutral as possible #even if by default our language doesny allow it #so rlly theres no excuse in general #polyasks
